“An Alarming Specificity” at Haverford’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery Subverts White Patriarchal Hegemony en are actually a minority in America. (According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women are 50.8% of the population.) And white, cisgender, heterosexual, non-disabled men represent an even smaller slice of the country’s demographic pie. But with so much of culture – from the pages of “important novels” to screens big and small to gallery walls – devoted to their stories and ideas, you would be forgiven for assuming otherwise. A new exhibit at Haverford College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery seeks to remedy this outsized influence, turning its attention instead to those outside that white patriarchal hegemony. “An Alarming Specificity,” curated by Haverford College alum Aubree Penney ’13, examines the ways artists can subvert the predominance of white, heterosexual, cis-male, non-disabled bodies as the default of humanity. Across installation, typeface, mixed media, prints, GIFs, and performance, artists Shannon Finnegan, Chitra Ganesh, GenderFail, Yvette Granata, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Linda Stupart, and Eva Wŏ uphold individual bodies attempting to survive and thrive in a world which frequently neglects to support, protect, recognize, or heal them. The exhibit centers the bodies of women, people of color, atypically embodied people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community by shining a spotlight on works such as Leeson’s Seduction, a black-and-white print of a reclining woman with a television in place of her head; Ganesh’s Double Vision, a multi-media work that uses giant fingernails, a disco ball, and drawings of cameras to honor the joy of constructing one’s life and image; Wŏ’s GIFs and lightboxes celebrating queer bodies; and GenderFail’s typeset drawing from queer protest signs of the 1970s. Also included in An Alarming Specificity are Granata’s work addressing the history of self-induced abortions; Finnegan’s installations exploring issues of accessibility, choice, comfort, and care; and Linda Stupart’s first U.S. performance, After the Ice, the Deluge (The Awakening), which investigates melting polar ice caps as both traumatized bodies and as a crisis that can only be mitigated by traumatized bodies. “An Alarming Specificity occupies an unusual standpoint in that it is a project born of both anger and joy,” said Penney, the curator, who will be back in the gallery where, as a student gallery assistant, she cultivated her interest in socially minded exhibitions. “It is my hope that audiences feel that they have had a space to be frustrated with marginalization and also that they have been in a space that loves their bodies, which cherishes the wide variety of their experiences and the tactics they employ not only to claim space but just to get through each day. I hope people find themselves inspired by the different tactics for re-centering the human experience around bodies that too often are cast as existing at the margins when in fact they constitute a majority.” “An Alarming Specificity” will be on view March 20 through April 24 at Haverford College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery. Attend Stupart’s opening performance and a reception Friday, March 20, from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the gallery. For further details: https://exhibits.haverford.edu/alarmingspecificity. “An Alarming Specificity”is sponsored by the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities and VCAM. Overseen by the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities and located in Whitehead Campus Center, the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesdays until 8 p.m. For information, contact Matthew Seamus Callinan, associate director of the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, VCAM, and campus exhibitions, at 610-896-1287 or mcallina@haverford.edu, or visit the exhibitions program website: www.haverford.edu/exhibits. Each student submitted original writing in either fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. he Gladwyne Library League has recognized 20 Lower School students at The Haverford School for their writing submissions to the 47th annual Junior Author Contest. Students submitted works in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Students in grades one through five were honored for their original pieces of work. Four students received first place honors, six students placed second, four students received third place, and six students received an honorable mention. “When writing is recognized and published outside of The Haverford School, it reiterates to our students that writing is not always just for yourself,” said Michelle Burns, Lower School librarian at The Haverford School. “Haverford focuses on encouraging students to share their voices and their experiences, and the Junior Author Contest is a great way to do that.” One student, fifth grader Chris, has taken part in the Junior Author Award Contest for several years. “Last year and this year I submitted poems,” said Chris. “I really like writing poetry because it reminds me a lot of music, and I like how they work together in some ways.” Each winner was recognized at the Junior Author Award Ceremony on Feb. 28.

International Adolescent Health Week Finale “Go Green: Dump the Junk, and Stay to Play” will include a number of recycling drop-off options to encourage re-use and recycling, as well as an interactive fitness program. he 2020 International Adolescent Health Week finale is being held March 21, from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., at Bayard Rustin High School, 1100 Shiloh Rd., West Chester, PA. Founded by Dr. Laura Offutt, MD, FCAP, International Adolescent Health Week (IAHW) is celebrated annually in March. This year, Penn Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is proud to represent Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, among the nearly 180 cities in more than 25 countries across 6 continents, that are participating in the event. The IAHW is a grass-roots initiative for young people, their health care providers, their teachers, their parents, their advocates, and their communities to come together and celebrate adolescents. The goal is to work collectively toward improving the health and well-being of the over 1 billion adolescents across the globe. This year’s finale event, titled “Go Green: Dump the Junk, and Stay to Play,” will include a number of recycling drop-off options to encourage re-use and recycling, as well as an interactive fitness program. The Body Up! portion of the program in the school gym will be a 30-minute fun-filled fitness event for teens and their families of all fitness levels. It will be led by the dynamic and inspirational Certified Fitness Professional, Avante Bailey, of A Bailey Mind & Body. The theme of the entire week is “Transforming Risk into Wellness,” which includes three pillars: Healthy Lifestyle, Resilience and Mental Health, and Holistic Well-being and Healthy Communities. “These three pillars reflect the fact that adolescent health is impacted by the decisions and behaviors of adolescents as individuals, as well as decisions at the community and policy level. The finale event recognizes and celebrates the interrelation of a healthy earth and healthy young people,” Dr. Offut said. The program will also include an interactive session answering common health questions adolescents ask in 2020. For this panel, Dr. Offutt will be joined by Dr. Janice Hillman, MD, an internationally recognized adolescent health expert, who practices at Penn Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine. Penn Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is a unique practice that focuses solely on the needs of young women and men ages 12 to 30. It provides primary care in a comprehensive manner with a full understanding of the physical and psychological changes associated with the transition to adulthood, with two locations, in Radnor and Chesterbrook. With the opening of the new Penn Medicine Radnor location, opening in May 2020, Penn Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine will expand its on-site services at its Radnor practices to include psychological services, nutrition counseling, and a drop-in center for teens. Penn Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine will serve as the host and sponsor for the IAHW finale event, supported by a generous gift from the Powell Family Foundation. The IAHW finale will also include awards to recognize adolescents for being leaders in their communities. Organizers are looking to recognize exceptional teens in our local middle schools, high schools, and colleges, who have contributed to the health and well-being of their peers and young people. A number of Adolescent Health All-Stars will be recognized, and the Grand Prize of $250 and title of 2020 Adolescent Health All-Star will be presented to this year’s winner: www.internationaladolescenthealthweek.org/phillyfinale. Started in 2016 as Teen Health Week in the U.S., IAHW is an annual, international week of dynamic participatory events to inspire adolescents and their communities to advocate for a successful transition into adulthood. Lime green, which represents health, happiness, and the high energy and passion of adolescents, is the official color of IAHW. 2020 marks the third year the cause goes international, with events being planned across the globe. Participants will mark the week with events both in person and on social media, including lectures, interactive projects, and hands-on physical activities. In Philadelphia, Boathouse Row, the Ben Franklin Bridge, and much of the skyline will light up with the IAHW lime green colors over the weekend of the 2020 finale event. Dr. Offutt is the physician behind “Real Talk with Dr. Offutt,” an interactive digital health resource for adolescents, through which accurate, understandable and honest answers to teen health questions are shared. She was inspired to create IAHW while working with a group of her youth advisors in the summer of 2015. The week of designation furthered Dr. Offutt’s mission of providing “answers, not judgement” regarding teen health issues via “Real Talk with Dr. Offutt.” Dr. Offutt is a member of the International Association of Adolescent Health and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, where she leads the IAHW Special Interest Group. She serves on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance to Advance Adolescent Health. She is an Invited Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. She has been featured on CNN discussing adolescent health issues with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. When she is not working with teens or answering their health questions, Dr. Offutt cares for uninsured patients as a volunteer physician at Community Volunteers in Medicine in West Chester. The community is invited to take advantage of the recycling collection trucks in the school parking lot and gymnasium. They will include: • Shred It: free secure recycling of papers and documents. • GreenDrop: Items with useful life left in them, including clothing, household goods, small furniture, and working electronics (no tube TVs). • Gladwyne Pharmacy: Unwanted medications. • Lions Club: frames and eyeglasses. • Back to Earth Compost Crew: compostables. ansdowne Folk Club presents life-long troubadours Tom Paxton and The DonJuans on Thursday, March 19, 2020. Held at the Twentieth Century Club, 84 S. Lansdowne Avenue, Lansdowne, PA, doors open at 7 p.m. and show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30. Advance reservation or ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets on sale now. Parking is available on the street and at the SEPTA train station approximately one block away. For reservations, parking information, advance ticket sales and information visit www.folkclub.org, email Lfolkclub@gmail.com or call 484-466-6213. Cash only accepted at the door. Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and folk icon, Tom Paxton, teams up with the Grammy winning singer/songwriter duo The DonJuans – Don Henry & Jon Vezner. Collectively, their songs have been covered by: Harry Belafonte, John Mellencamp, Miranda Lambert, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Nancy Griffith, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, John Denver, Faith Hill, B.J. Thomas, Blake Shelton, Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan… just to name a few! Within days of writing and playing together, they knew they were onto something. Now they’re taking it on the road! Tom on guitar/vocals/stories, Don on guitar/vocals/uke/banjo/grins and Jon on piano/vocals/guitar/uke/kitchen sink. Tom began his performing career in Greenwich Village in 1960, coming in on weekends from Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was toiling away in the Clerk Typist School. (He used his typewriter one day to compose his famous song for children, The Marvelous Toy, later a hit for The Chad Mitchell Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary). Upon his release he stayed in New York and put in several years playing in now-legendary coffee houses like The Gaslight and befriending other singers like Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Eric Andersen. After 56 years of performing around the world and writing and recording innumerable songs and recordings, Tom Paxton has found yet another outlet for his creativity; he has joined his friends and song-writing colleagues The Don Juans in a writing and performing experience calculated to keep them too busy to get into trouble. Learn more about them at www.tompaxton.com and www.thedonjuans.com. Other upcoming concerts include Peppino D’Agostino on April 23, Crys Matthews on May 7 and Diana Jones on June 4. Founded in 1993, the Lansdowne Folk Club is a 501(c) (3) all volunteer non-profit corporation dedicated to presenting folk, acoustic and blues music.
