he Corinne Mammana Quartet featuring guitarist Frank DiBussolo will appear at Chris’ Jazz Café on Tuesday, December 16. Shows run from 7 to 10 p.m. and tickets are $10, $5 for students. Chris’ is located on 1421 Sansom Street. For reservations or information, call 215-568-3131 or visit www.chrisjazzcafe.com. Jazz singer Corinne Mammana has an extensive background in theater with some imposing credits, including several stints offBroadway. Jazz Times profiled her recently, saying, “Mammana bridges a sometimes difficult gap between what is obviously her seriously and classically trained vocal instrument, as applied to a lightly swinging book of songs. Her superb technique is a dead giveaway. But

T

she applies her superior technique gracefully, carefully, tastefully and intelligently.” Jazz Times also commented on Frank DiBussolo: “Veteran guitarist and educator DiBussolo, always a technical marvel,” said the magazine, “has mellowed with the years and has evolved into an inventive and tasteful soloist, evidenced by his newest recording, ‘Songs to Write Home About.’” This Quartet which works frequently in New York City, at the prestigious Deer Head Inn and in clubs and concerts in their native Bethlehem, PA, specializes in jazz versions of the Great American song book. Also featured are the swinging and versatile Dave DiPalma on saxophone, and two-thirds of the charismatically swinging All-Star Jazz Trio, bassist Bruce Kaminsky and drummer Bruce Klauber.

alnut Street Theatre for Kids’ annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol will bring warmth and cheer to thousands of families and students this holiday season. This hour-long musical adaptation of Dickens’ classic novel opened November 29 and runs through December 21. Every year, families take a break from the busy holiday season and come together to watch A Christmas Carol live on stage at Walnut Street Theatre. Filled with laughter, whimsical spirits and original music, this Philadelphia tradition brings joy and magic to children and adults across the region. Audiences are transported back to 1840’s London, where they meet Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. This grumpy old miser’s response to holiday cheer is “Bah, Humbug.” On one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, Scrooge experiences the magic and merriment of the season, inspiring him to change his miserly ways. He truly learns what the holiday season is all about: family, generosity and love. WST for Kids’ production of A Christmas Carol welcomes back Director Bill Van Horn. Van Horn is currently performing at the Walnut in Mary Poppins (Admiral Bloom, Bank Chairman) and has appeared in several other Walnut productions. Previously commissioned by the Walnut to adapt Dickens’ holiday tale, Van Horn has become an integral part of this Philadelphia tradition, directing it in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. He collaborated with Michael Borton to write the book and music, and is excited to once again be a part of Walnut’s holiday season. Van Horn noted, “Each year we look forward to seeing the joy on children’s faces as they experience the magic of A Christmas Carol. We enjoy the time we get to spend with the cast and crew, seeing the familiar faces of returning performers, while welcoming new additions to the Walnut family. This year, Mark Collmer will appear on the Mainstage for the first time as the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge!” Mark Collmer, native to the Philadelphia area, is eager to join the cast as the “humbug”-ing old miser. “I look forward to working with this incredibly talented and seasoned creative team to bring this wonderful tale to life for the children and families of my hometown.” Collmer, who has also appeared as Scrooge in Maui, is excited to perform this role close to home stating, “When I had the pleasure of performing the role of Scrooge for two years at the Historic Iao Theatre built in 1928 on the island of a Maui, I had no idea I would have the privilege of recreating Ebenezer at a theatre so

ARTS, CULTURE & SOCIETY EVENTS Art Show at Gratz College Focuses on Holocaust and Lessons Learned for Future Generations ratz College, 7605 Old York Road, Melrose Park, PA 19027 presents “Painted Fire,” an art show featuring the work of local artists Linda Dubin Garfield and Elsa Wachs which continues until December 18. Linda Dubin Garfield and Elsa Wachs present their third collaboration on the theme of the Holocaust. Together and separately they explore, examine and express important issues through their art. Garfield uses letters written before and during the Holocaust years to illustrate fragments of personal histories and how it affects the descendants of these victims. “Letters from the Holocaust” offers viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives of those who endured the ghettos and camps of the Holocaust. Often with oddly hopeful messages, the letters give us a glimpse of understanding about what life was like for people caught up in those terrible times. They show tremendous resilience and bravery. These brief, intimate peeks into the lives of the writers are what remembrance is all about—remembering the humanity of each person caught in the Holocaust. Some of the mail took many months to reach their destination. In reading these letters, we see the threads that hold humanity together. Once identified, those threads become the building blocks for

our shared existence and hope for a better future. Wachs invites the viewer to her dinner table to ponder and discuss perplexing, contemporary issues. Today, more than ever, we need the lessons of the Holocaust as catalysts and momentum to affect change. Serpent-like tongues of orange and blue and then red hot, ravaged and annihilated everything in its path—The Holocaust, Painted Fire, the ominous inferno that swallowed up humanity. In recent years Wachs has been able to see another “painted fire” emanating from this horror, a fire that glows and crackles with hope, like the pillar of fire and pillar of smoke characterized in Exodus, the guiding spirit through the desert leading into the Promised Land. She invites viewers to her table of “Burning Questions” to reflect on, deliberate, resolve, and hopefully pledge to help repair this world. FIND GREAT EVENTS IN CITY SUBURBAN NEWS!

Intrepid hiker and author, Hope Justman has a rom her first trip in 1999, she realized she must capture the splendor of the remote countryside, the mountains of Yunnan Province, and its worn flagstone roads traveled by generations of Chinese farmers, soldiers, and traders. Philadelphia resident Hope Justman recounts her adventure as an American woman traveling alone in the outreaches of China Tuesday, December 16, 6:30 p.m. at Tredyffrin Public Library, Strafford, PA. For information about this free program, visit www.MainLineMUFON.com. “It was like stepping back into the 19th century and seeing the China that had been described in travel books of that era,” she says. “The countryside hadn’t changed for hundreds of years. The houses were all traditional sun-dried brick structures with graceful lines, tile roofs, and corn cobs hanging under the eaves.” When she returned fourteen years later, almost every traditional home had been replaced by a two-story concrete structure, “ungainly at best and garish at worst.” Ms. Justman has been discovering and hiking these imperial roads ever since. The 25,000-mile flagstone highway network was built by the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. She began with the Southwestern Silk Road, from Chengdu enroute to Burma. Now she is tracing the Tea Road which proceeded

passion for exploring the hidden roads of China west from Yaan to Lhasa in Tibet. Her guidebook, “Guide to Hiking China’s Old Road to Shu” prepares the hiker to go off the beaten track—with maps, Chinese phrases, menu descriptions, hotels, and all manner of unusual Q & A: Is it safe to drink Bad Weather Beer or eat in a restaurant that advertises “Englishmen delicious”? When staying in a Chinese farmhouse should you wash your face and feet in the same basin? By now, she knows most of the answers. Justman has traveled alone, considered “brave” by many Chinese women. She has led two group tours of the Road to Shu and next March conducts another to Tibet. Her tours include the “tourist spots” (the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, the giant panda bear reserve in Chengdu,) but her passion is to show you the roads that are often unknown by their own residents. “Renaissance Noël” Performed by Vox Renaissance Consort “Renaissance Noël” will be performed by the intimate, and lushly costumed, vocal and instrumental forces of the Vox Renaissance Consort on Friday, December 12 at 8 p.m. in Chestnut Hill and Sunday, December 14 at 4 p.m. in Bryn Mawr.

ake a beautiful and joyous musical journey back in time when Valentin Radu, artistic director and conductor of VoxAmaDeus, leads his Vox Renaissance Consort in two performances of beloved music for the Christmas season—melodies that were popular during the European High Renaissance and Early Baroque periods (about 1550 to 1675). “Renaissance Noël” is a magical mixture of centuries-old folk songs, carols, madrigals and motets. In fact, several selections on the Vox Renaissance Consort program are still sung and revered today. The entire family will delight in hauntingly beautiful classics like “Greensleaves,” the ancient chant “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” lively Christmas bells and the gentle “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming.” “Renaissance Noël” is a feast for the ears and the eyes—and easy on the family pocketbook! The professional singers of Vox Renaissance Consort are attired in lush High Renaissance dress and accompanied by minstrels playing period appropriate instruments. The program is conducted by the dynamic Maestro Valentin Radu. Performance dates, times and locations are: • Friday, December 12 at 8 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 22 East Chestnut Hill Avenue near the intersection of Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA 19118. • Sunday, December 14 at 4 p.m. on the Bryn Mawr College campus, in Thomas Great Hall near 256 North Merion Avenue in Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. Tickets for these concerts are moderately priced at $25 for General Admission, $20 for Seniors (65+), and $10 for Students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.VoxAmaDeus.org – by phone at 610-688-2800 – or at the door 45 minutes prior to concert time.

1812 Productions Presents “Improvukkah: Improv for the Holidays” hile 1812 Productions’ annual political comedy “This Is The Week That Is” storms through the month of December, the organization presents a two-night-only special event “Improvukkah: Improv for the Holidays.” Just in time for the festival of lights, “Improvukkah: Improv for the Holidays” brings a group of Philadelphia’s finest improvisers to the stage for two evenings of on-the-spot comedy. Featuring long form, short form, and musical improvisation, “Improvukkah: Improv for the Holidays” will be hosted by Thomas E. Shotkin as Uncle Shotsie, a character made famous to Philadelphia audiences by his many appearances in 1812 Productions’ “This Is The Week That Is.” An event perfect for families, and celebrators of any December holiday, much of the evening’s line up will be determined by the audience as the cast will take its cues from unsuspecting ticket holders who will provide the suggestions, motivations, and directions that get each scene moving. And, as this special event coincides with the start of Hanukkah, audiences will even be treated to some Pentateuch-inspired games and improvised Yiddish folk songs, courtesy of Uncle Shotsie and his not-so-traditional style. The cast of veteran improv performers includes 1812 favorites Dave Jadico and Mary Carpenter. Jadico and Carpenter are the current and former, respectively, Artistic Directors of ComedySportz, Philadelphia’s longest running comedy show. They will be joined onstage by fellow ComedySportz improvisers Langston Darby, Noah Herman, Kristin Finger, and Fred Siegel. “Improvukkah: Improv for the Holidays” will be performed for two nights only, Monday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street in Center City. All tickets are $25 and can be purchased at 215-592-9560 or at www.1812productions.org.

Students Make Christmas Ornaments in Science Class ant to enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas? Then how about making ornaments the old-fashioned way! Rosemont School of the Holy Child 8th grade students in the science class of teacher Karen Grossman did just that this week, by using chemicals, clear glass orbs, and hangers to craft hand-made ornaments for the room’s Christmas tree. The students combined dextrose in an ammonia solution with silver nitrate in the glass orbs, and then shook the solution to “silver” the glass interior. According to Mrs. Grossman, the process was developed by a German chemist in 1835. The overall reaction, she added, is considered to be an oxidation reduction reaction between silver complex ions and dextrose in the ammonia solution. In case you were wondering …

Sara Lindsey and Kayla Speedy, this season’s costume apprentices, create a wardrobe of 1840’s holiday fashion. Walnut’s Director of Education, Thomas Quinn, enjoys sharing this musical not only with families, but with teachers and students. “Using live theatre to highlight Dickens’ powerful story creates an educational experience that is exciting and engaging. We provide teachers with study guides that help begin a discussion before school groups attend the production. Dickens’ novel comes to life on stage through cheerful music, period costumes, and familiar characters, creating a lasting impression that continues a conversation outside of the classroom.” A Christmas Carol is a delightful holiday treat for student groups and their teachers. A Christmas Carol has upcoming matinee performances on December 10-14, 16-18, 20, and 21. The Wednesday, December 10 performance will be ASL interpreted and Audio Described. Tickets are $14 - $16. From left – Philadelphia Flyers Fan Development staff member Jason Tempesta, GTSS paraprofessional educator in Autism Support, Jessica Hudson, GTSS Autism Support students Amir TaylorThomas and Foxx Marion, GTSS physical education teacher Trish Morris, Flyer Fan Development staff member Tom Peffall, and (center/back) Philadelphia Flyer legend Bob “The Hound” Kelly. n Tuesday, December 2, 2014, Green Tree School & Services (GTSS) held a Philadelphia Flyers assembly in the gymnasium of the facility located at 1196 East Washington Lane in Philadelphia. The agency has been serving children with special needs since 1957. The assembly focused on the theme of teamwork and being safe when playing sports. Flyers Ambassador of Hockey, Bob “The Hound” Kelly, was on hand to lead the assembly. Approximately 40 students from the Autism Support Program and Lower School were in attendance. This was the first time the Philadelphia Flyers presented their School Assembly program to children with special needs. Jason Tempesta and Tom Peffall, members of the Philadelphia Flyers Fan Development staff, helped Bob Kelly educate students on using teamwork to achieve their goals in school, sports and at home. Kelly also spoke with students about being safe when playing sports and taught them about the sport of hockey. The program included video highlights, teacher-student races, student equipment modeling, and more. Selected in 1970 by the Philadelphia Flyers, Bob Kelly was a left-winger who helped guide the Flyers to their two consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975. He scored the 1975 cup-winning goal.
