other regional orchestras now charge, the Lower Merion Symphony continues to entertain hundreds of devotees who flock to its performances on four Sundays each year at the Lower Merion High School Auditorium. The orchestra is under the direction of visionary Music Director/Conductor, Mark Gigliotti, who is also a veteran coprincipal bassoonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, together with highly talented musicians from the region, donate their time at weekly rehearsals and the concerts because of their love of music and their devotion to Mr. Gigliotti. Gigliotti is a noteworthy musical talent himself and a descendent of a musical family of renown. He constantly challenges the orchestra to grow in their art by playing more complex music by composers such as Mahler, Bartok, Saint-Saens and others. According to orchestra President Dr. Sherman Leis, who is also its principal clarinetist, “The Lower Merion Symphony is one of the region’s best kept cultural secrets and obviously its best value. Nowadays, it’s not that simple. Digital assets need to be identified and evaluated, and access to financial records might be restricted, even to legal representatives. Laws are vague. Online technology has also changed mourning, to include notices on Facebook and formal online memorials. Holly Isdale, an expert in the field of legacy and “digital death” will discuss some of the many ways to ease your inevitable transition for those you leave behind. HEROES TO S PLASH AND D ASH FOR D ESIGNATED D RIVING AT O CEAN C ITY NJ’ S 2015 F IRST D AY articipants in Ocean City’s annual New Year’s Day Run and Ocean Dip will have a new reason to take the plunge this year as the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign partners with the city to promote the use of designated drivers. It’s all part of the Ocean City’s 23rd First Night and First Day celebrations, which begin New Year’s Eve with the city-wide festival of family activities and fireworks, followed by the First Day HERO Run and Plunge on the beach and Boardwalk. This year’s event also marks the beginning of the HERO Campaign’s 15th anniversary year. “We are proud of Ocean City’s longstanding relationship with the HERO Campaign,” stated Mayor Jay Gillian. “We welcome its participation as a charitable partner in our annual First Night and First Day festivities, which are all about safe family fun.” The run and plunge, presented by Shore Orthopaedic University Associates in Somers Point, will seek to raise funds and awareness for the HERO Campaign in support of its mission to prevent drunk driving by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. “We have supported the HERO Campaign since its inception and are proud to make this important organization a major focus of our philanthropic community involvement,” stated John R. McCloskey, MD, senior partner for the regional orthopaedics group. “We share their commitment to saving lives and making our community a safer place to live.” Registration for the HERO Run and Plunge begins January 1 at 11:30 in front of the Music Pier. Starting time for the 5K Boardwalk Run is 1 p.m., followed by the HERO Plunge at 2 p.m. Although the plunge has no entrance fee, participants contributing $20 or more, and signing a designated driver pledge and release form will receive a long-sleeve commemorative HERO Campaign shirt and membership certificate. Online pre-registration is available at www.herocampaign.org or at 609-626-3880 The HERO Campaign was established in memory of Navy Ensign John Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Elliott was kill-

He was driving home for his mother’s birthday celebration at the time of his death. The HERO Campaign partners with schools, colleges, law enforcement, highway safety agencies, bars, taverns, professional sports teams and healthcare agencies to end drunk driving by increasing the use of designated drivers nationwide. Now operating in seven states, the campaign plans to expand nationwide with television and radio commercials, highway billboards, posters, social media and designated driver registration campaigns. “We are looking forward to partnering with Ocean City and Shore Orthopaedic University Associates on these iconic First Day events, which promote family fun and responsibility,” noted HERO Campaign chairman Bill Elliott, John Elliott’s father. He added that the HERO Campaign has been proud of its ongoing association with Ocean City over the past 14 years through First Night, the Night in Venice Boat Parade, Miss Night in Venice Pageant and its annual HERO Walk. Michele Gillian, chairman of the First Night/First Day Committee echoed Elliott’s comments, saying that the HERO Campaign has been an important partner over the years for its alcohol-free festival and its emphasis on personal responsibility. First Night gets underway on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, from 4 p.m. to midnight, culminating in a firework display over the Boardwalk. The cost is $20 per person, children 2 years and younger are free. Buttons can be purchased at www.firstnightocnj.com, or by calling 609-399-1412 and are available 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily at Stainton’s Square, Eighth Street and Asbury Avenue. An Exciting Musical First… the Philadelphia Premiere of Aaron Copland’s “Jazz-Inspired” Piano Concerto Presented by Vox Ama Deus January 16, 2015, at the Kimmel Center he acclaimed and revered American composer Aaron Copland wrote only one piano concerto with symphony orchestra; and, shocking to report, it has never been performed in Philadelphia! This will change on Friday, January 16, 2015. That evening, in the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater, Valentin Radu will lead the orchestral forces of the Ama Deus Ensemble, with internationally acclaimed British piano virtuoso Peter Donohoe at the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, to perform this neglected Copland concerto! VoxAmaDeus has recently been informed by Boosey and Hawkes (the exclusive holder of the concerto’s copyrighted performance score), that its records indicate that Boosey has never rented parts to Aaron Copland’s jazz-inspired Piano Concerto of 1926-27 to any performance ensemble in Philadelphia! This intelligence comes on top of previous inquiries which determined that neither the Philadelphia Orchestra, nor the Philly Pops, has any record of performing this major work by one of America’s greatest composers! The history of this overlooked musical gem has a fascinating story: Aaron Copland was only in his mid-twenties when he was asked by the famed conductor Serge Koussevitzky to compose a piano concerto for debut by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During 1926, Copland worked to compose a jazzinfluenced Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Although Copland was very cognizant of the American jazz scene, it is interesting to note that his approach to jazz had been influenced by European composers. On January 28 and 29, 1927, with Aaron Copland at the Valentin Radu will lead the orchestral forces of the Ama keyboard, Serge Koussevitzky Deus Ensemble, with internationally acclaimed British piano led performances with the virtuoso Peter Donohoe (shown) at the Bösendorfer Imperial Boston Symphony Orchestra Grand Piano, to perform Aaron Copland’s “Jazz-Inspired” in Boston. A week later, these Piano Concerto, Friday, January 16, 2015, in the Kimmel same artists performed the Center’s Perelman Theater. Photo/Sussie Ahlburg work in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Truth be told, in both cities the Copland Piano Concerto met with mixed public receptions, as well as very pointed pro and (heavily) con comments from the critics, one reviewer being the famed musical commentator Olin Downes. In October of 1946, after approximately sixteen years had passed since its last performance, the dashing young Leonard Bernstein brought the Copland Piano Concerto back before the public. Philadelphia-born, Curtis-trained Leo Smit was at the piano; Bernstein was on the podium leading the New York City Symphony; Copland was in the audience. Of this revival Copland wrote: “Lenny and Leo handled the rhythmic complexities of the Concerto with ease. Leo is a far better pianist than I − I had played the work like a composer, while he was a dazzling performer with enormous vitality and yet he kept everything absolutely clean and precise.” VoxAmaDeus gratefully acknowledges that it was thanks to the strong recommendation of, and championing by, Peter Donohoe – the January 16 concert soloist – that the Copland Piano Concerto will make its long-delayed debut in the Philadelphia region. VoxAmaDeus’ January 16, 2015 concert is titled “Awesome Americans – Gershwin, Copland, Williams.” This will be Mr. Donohoe’s third appearance on stage with Valentin Radu and the Ama Deus Ensemble orchestra. In addition to the Aaron Copland Piano Concerto, the repertoire for this pops-oriented concert will include George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F and An American in Paris. From the prolific genius of John Williams, Valentin Radu will lead the orchestra in the Harry Potter Suite, the Raider’s March and The Empire Strikes Back Medley. Tickets range in price from $20 to $70. The Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano is made available to VoxAmaDeus courtesy of the Cunningham Piano Company of Philadelphia.

IRMA SHAPIRO’S “A PASSION FOR COLOR” EXHIBIT Continued from page 3

Before his death in 1996, her husband expressed his hope that she would return to her art. When she did pick it up again, “I was told to get rid of the knife; no one was painting with palette knives anymore.” Not entirely convinced, she gathered together some of her existing work, called around, and got The Art Works gallery in Kennett Square, PA, to offer them for sale. The upshot: 16 of them sold. “All of a sudden, what I had been doing was hot stuff.” It didn’t last: “My new work with the knife was terrible. I had forgotten what I needed to do.” Then she discovered fast-drying acrylics. Redoing her canvasses became much faster than with oils. She was still testing her prowess in her new medium when Bill Greenwood told her that if she could get up 20 paintings, he’d get her a show. She did and he kept his word. “Irma is one of the most prolific students I have ever had,” says Greenwood. “And she has the energy of a 65-year old.” She has had solo shows, and participated in group, juried and invitational exhibits across the Delaware Valley, as well as in New York, New Jersey and Florida. She has taken art classes at Tyler School of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Samuel Fleisher Art Gallery, Moore College of Art and the Main Line Art Center. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. into most evenings. For extended and weekend hours, and other information, telephone the Art Gallery at 610519-4612. Selected works for the Irma Shapiro exhibit may be previewed on the gallery’s website at www.artgallery.villanova.edu. Every Week Find Great Restaurant and Entertainment News Here!

vide free dental hygiene services to children who have pre-registered. Co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association, Sealant Day aims to prevent future tooth decay and cavities in children, as well as aid in overall oral health. The tips and guidance provided help children, families, and the community learn the value of oral care in their overall health and wellness. “Our students and faculty are committed to promoting good oral health to parents and children in the local area,” said Jean Byrnes-Ziegler, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program at Harcum. “Sealant Monday is an important initiative for us to not only advance the clinical experience for our students but also to provide a much needed community resource.” An estimated 100 million Americans have no dental insurance. Nationally, the incidence of dental cavities is rising for the first time in decades. Locally, it is estimated that 40 percent of Pennsylvanians lack dental insurance. According to the American Society of Periodontology, oral health problems are linked to a variety of diseases and health conditions, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The use of sealants can decrease oral health complications, especially for cavity prone children. Families must call ahead for an appointment by contacting the Cohen Dental Center at 610-526-6113 or 610-526-6015. Appointments are being accepted for 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. until all slots are full. The College will be open on January 19 with a normal schedule.

From left – Jay S. Feldstein, president and CEO of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; Jim Murray, co-founder of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House; Edward Potts, chief human resources officer at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. or its 15th consecutive year, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) held its annual Lights of Love project to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. Thanks to the generosity of students, faculty and staff the College was able to donate more than $600. At a ceremony on Dec. 17, Jay S. Feldstein, president and CEO of PCOM, said the ability to donate to such a worthy cause was “one of life’s pleasures.” He then presented a check for the funds to Jim Murray, former general manager for the Philadelphia Eagles and cofounder of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House--the nation’s first. An evergreen tree in the College’s courtyard was illuminated with Christmas lights, signifying the donations of the PCOM community. Murray, who donned a PCOM cap for the occasion, thanked the College and all of the Lights of Love donors for their participation. “I’m here today, wearing your hat and your heart,” he told a crowd in Evans Hall. “You’re the combat troops, you’ll be the ones talking to [the families] and diagnosing the kids. Thank you so much.”
