“C LEVER D ICK ” A RRIVES ON THE S CENE AT T HE S TAGECRAFTERS lever Dick,” a potboiler of a mystery by Charles Marowitz, opened at The Stagecrafters on Friday, November 28, 2014. In this zany send-up of the classic British murder-at-the-manor whodunit (which also pokes wicked fun at the English class system), the Lord of the House meets an unexpected and inexplicable end, and stalwart Inspector Farcus of Scotland Yard arrives to investigate. Suspects multiply by the minute, and ... no one is above suspicion! In his dogged pursuit of the truth, the intrepid detective unearths shocking details of the decadent lives of the assorted denizens of the mansion, and as justice is being served, we are treated to a riotous, racy romp. Charles Marowitz (19322014), American critic, theater director, and playwright active in the London theater scene, was the author of SherSee “Clever Dick,” a mystery-farce by Charles Marowitz, at lock’s Last Case, which was produced on Broadway in 1987, The Stagecrafters. D A N C E C E L E B R AT I O N B R I N G S W H I M S Y T O T H E H O L I D AY S With the Highly-Imaginative Swiss Troupe MUMMENSCHANZ December 11-14
Theatrical whimsy meets silent storytelling in the uber creative performances by Swiss troupe MUMMENSCHANZ. Celebrate the holiday season by experiencing MUMMENSCHANZ with the whole family. nown for its zany visual theater through silent storytelling for family audiences, MUMMENSCHANZ performs its latest program, 40 years. This Swiss troupe returns to Philadelphia with longtime favorites and new skits in five performances. Performances take place Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, December 12 at 8 p.m., Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, December 14 at 3 p.m. at the Annenberg Center, 3680 WalnutStreet. Tickets are $20-$75. For tickets or for information, visit www.AnnenbergCenter.org or call 215-898-3900. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Box Office. Dance Celebration is co-presented by Dance Affiliates and Annenberg Center Live. Using visual effects and props, the universal stories told by MUMMENSCHANZ have been described as “witty madness… dazzling and delightful” (New York Times). In the wordless universe of MUMMENSCHANZ, the ordinary becomes extraordinary when common materials, everyday objects (like toilet paper) and colorful abstract shapes and forms like the famous “Clay Masks,” “Slinky Man” and “Giant Hands” spring to life. The stories are unique in that they have no sound or music; the language of MUMMENSCHANZ is universal. Founder Bernie Schurch notes, “We are musicians of the silence.” By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the inventive use of shadow, light and creative manipulation of objects, MUMMENSCHANZ offers timeless insight on the human condition. The result is a visually stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. The program begins with a giant light gray hand pushing the curtains encouraging from the start audience interaction. The “ash,” sighs, laughter, chuckles, and squeals of delight set the tone forming the sound score. What ensues are twenty plus inventive segments exploring topics such as relationships (romance/rejection) through masked performers, human activity such as eating embodied by a green muppet-like Kermit character who opens its mouth, swallows and moves its tongue or pure magic personified by a giant slinky tossing a red balloon into the audience or the huge lump of cloth that engulfs the front rows of the audience. The characters are endless and performed by a stellar cast of four incredibly skilled theater artists. MUMMENSCHANZ has appeared on the Dance Celebration Series in 2010-11 and 2001-02. Formed in Paris in 1972 by founding members Andres Bossard, Floriana Frassetto and Bernie Schürch, MUMMENSCHANZ paved the way for nonverbal theatre and multiple new genres. Mummen is thought to derive from the German word for “disguise,” and schanz from the French “chance.” An over-the-top New York Times Review in 1977 resulted with the troupe performing for three years on Broadway. Since then, the group has established its legacy with tireless touring across five continents over four decades by the original artists (Frassetto is still a main cast member), as well as current featured players, Philipp Egli, Pietro Montandon and Raffaella Mattioli, and technical directors Jan Maria Lukas and Dino de Maio.

BOB PERKINS TO RECEIVE JAZZ BRIDGE “MAKING A DIFFERENCE” AWARD Continued from front page
Mike Boone, begins at 7:30 p.m. and will also feature a concert by guitarist Jason Klinke and his Trio. Tickets are $10, $5 for students and are available only at the door. Information: 215-517-8337 or visit www.jazzbridge.org/events/neighborhood-concerts. Bob Perkins has been making a difference in the Philadelphia jazz community – and beyond – since he joined WHYY Radio in 1987. He first began on the air on a Detroit radio station in 1964, and moved back to his hometown of Philadelphia five years later when he joined WDAS Radio. He stayed at WDAS for an incredible 19 years, and then joined WHYY, where he was one of that station’s first black broadcasters. It was during his tenure at WHYY as host of a weekly jazz show where he first got the nickname “BP with the GM,” a.k.a. “Bob Perkins with the Good Music.” As a broadcaster and columnist, the contributions Bob Perkins has made and continues to make to the jazz community have been generous, substantial and long-lasting. He has never hesitated to give airtime to area artists who are promoting a performance or a cause. When asked to host or lend his name to a jazz event, he is always there. His long-running jazz column for ICON magazine, profiles of our area’s legends of jazz, is one of the most widely read in the region. And as a radio host, his mellow and soothing “BP with the GM” style is one of the most instantly recognizable in broadcasting. Perkins has earned over 40 different honors and awards from major government, artistic, journalistic and community organizations through the years. Previous recipients of the Jazz Bridge “Making a Difference” Award have been saxophonist Larry McKenna, the late and great pianist/organist Trudy Pitts, jazz advocate Thelma Anderson, and jazz educator Lovett Hines. Jazz Bridge, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive.
Pinkberry in Bryn Mawr to Host Toy Drive to Benefit the Jeremy Maclin Foundation Free Pinkberry and Chance to Win Autographed Football with Toy Donation n Saturday December 6 and Sunday December 7, Pinkberry (located in Bryn Mawr at 763 W. Lancaster Ave., in the Staples shopping center) will join Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and his foundation JMac Gives Back in hosting a two-day toy drive, benefiting Little Smiles PA. Shoppers are encouraged to stop by from noon to 10 p.m. and drop off an unwrapped new toy. In exchange, they will receive a free mini size Pinkberry frozen yogurt and the chance to win an autographed Jeremy Maclin football. “We believe it is important to give back to the community and this is a great opportunity to provide toys during the holidays for children who might not otherwise receive any toys,” Pinkberry Owner Michael Brand said. Following the collection, the toys will be distributed to children staying in local hospitals during the holidays. Several families supported by Maclin’s foundation, JMac Gives Back, will also receive toys from the event. Little Smiles PA – a volunteer driven, nonprofit – seeks to help children in local hospitals, hospices, shelters and other similar facilities by helping them escape their unfortunate circumstances, even if only for a short period of time. From toys and electronics, to event tickets and VIP outings, Little Smiles PA fulfills individual wishes of children as well as organizes a variety of parties and holiday events. JMac Gives Back was created by Maclin in order to provide opportunities to children living in alternative living situations, through charitable and educational efforts. JMac Gives Back is dedicated to giving back to the St. Louis community, where Maclin’s road to success began, as well as Philadelphia, which he calls home. For info on Pinkberry, visit pinkberry.com.

the company. Since that time, the company has traveled to Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel, Kuwait, China, Japan, Korea, and France, to rave reviews. Their three-month tour of France last year resulted in a record 120 performances of “Swan Lake.” Today, a new crisis confronts the company. Their city and country are at war. Businesses have shut down. The population of the city has been reduced from 1 million to 500,000. The Donetsk National Opera and Ballet Theatre, a refuge from the violence, was forced to shut down due to the gunfire in the city and has only recently reopened. When the theater was closed, many of the dancers left the city to dance in Odessa, Kharkov, and other nearby cities, but they have now returned to give free performances. Despite all of this turmoil, the company will be returning to the United States for their annual tour of “The Nutcracker.” As the train station and airport are destroyed, the company will be traveling by bus to Kiev and fly to the United States from there.
