S TUDENT D ESIGNERS S HOWCASED IN H ARCUM C OLLEGE F ASHION S HOW -- Project Runway Finalist a Guest Speaker -arcum College invites students and Main Line area residents to its annual Fashion Show on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 8 p.m. in Klein Hall on the Bryn Mawr campus. The show features original designs from Harcum’s Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising students. This year’s show features remarks from a young fashion celebrity, Helen Castillo, the 26-year-old New Jersey native who was a finalist in last season’s hit television show “Project Runway.” Castillo will be speaking about her design process, her experience on the show, and showing highlights Harcum’s 2013 from her Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection during the event. Fashion Show “Every year, we proudly showcase the inspired designs of featured student our talented students,” said Julian Crooks, instructor and designs inspired program coordinator for continuing studies in design. “This by Hollywood. is a fun, community event during which we celebrate the work of our students, some of whom may themselves be featured on a show like ‘Project Runway.’” The fashion show is organized by members of the Harcum College Fashion Club, which includes students from the Design and Fashion Merchandising programs. With a core curriculum of both merchandising and business, the Retail Merchandising Program is designed to educate students on fashion trends and designs, fabrics, and garment construction. The culmination of Chez’s year long residency with the Haverford School District was a concert on April 9 azz great, Al Chez, joined students from Haverford High School and Haverford Middle School at the 35th Annual Evening of Jazz on Wednesday, April 9. Chez has been the 2014 Artist in Residence in the inaugural year of the Jazz Residency Program at the School District of Haverford Township. The residency program provides for an artist in residence to visit and instruct at Haverford schools four times in a school year. The culminating visit includes a performance at the Evening of Jazz concert. Haverford Middle School Teacher Dr. Drew Shanefield started the Jazz Residency Program. He received a grant from the Barbash Foundation and raised the remaining funds from the Haverford Community. Amazingly, this innovative musical education tool is funded without using curricular money. Haverford Superintendent Dr. William Keilbaugh said, “Haverford schools have a long tradition of music in education illustrated by the fact that many of our music teachers are Haverford Alums. At the 25th annual Betzwood Film Festival on Saturday, May 3, at 8 p.m., audiences can learn more about this famous collision and see the film itself. The annual film festival will be held at Montgomery County Community College’s Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for children under age 12. The story of how and why those two old locomotives ended up on the same track is only one of the features of our 25th anniversary show. We also plan to round up a posse to find Big Bill the bandit, recreate a Civil War battle, and hop into some vintage cars to rescue the kidnapped detective before the bomb goes off. Professor Eckhardt will explain the meaning of it all, with more vintage photographs from the Betzwood Film Archive and long lost stories about the making of silent movies in Montgomery County. As always, the films will be shown at their original projection speed, with live organ accompaniment by Don Kinnier. Not many local residents today are aware that before Hollywood, there was Betzwood: a sprawling 350-acre studio complex where more than 100 films were produced and circulated worldwide. Located in what is now West Norriton Township near the Trooper Road exit of Route 422, the operation was the brainchild of Siegmund Lubin, a Polish immigrant and Philadelphia-area resident who started out as an optician entranced by the possibilities of filmmaking. Lubin was truly ahead of his time, designing and selling movie cameras and projectors, operating a chain of movie theaters, and producing, directing, marketing and appearing in his own films. The visionary earned patents, conceived of the idea of home movies and tried to market movies with sound as early as 1904. But once he built his studio and film processing and distribution operations at Betzwood, he quickly became one of the most commercially successful movie moguls of the early silent era, establishing the world’s largest and most advanced film factory that employed up to 1,000 people and turned out five to six million feet of film each week. The spectacular train wreck was staged for the cameras in central Pennsylvania for a cool $35,000—as much or more as others were spending on entire films at the time and the equivalent of $818,000 in today’s dollars. The expense helped derail Betzwood’s viability. Coupled with patent and government lawsuits, restricted foreign distribution with the advent of World War I, and a major fire that destroyed the masters for many of the films, Lubin’s empire quickly foundered by 1915—when the groundbreaking film “Birth of a Nationâ€? ushered in a new era of more sophisticated storytelling. MCCC is home to the largest known archive of Betzwood movie studio artifacts in the world thanks to Joseph Eckhardt, emeritus professor of History at MCCC. Eckhardt is the author of the first Lubin biography, “The King of the Movies: Film Pioneer Siegmund Lubin,â€? which details Lubin’s transformation from an immigrant optician into the first successful movie mogul, credited with the first attempt at the “mass marketingâ€? of movies. Only 30 Betzwood films and fragments have survived the ravages of time, and MCCC is fortunate to have copies of 25 of these in its Betzwood Film Archive. For the past quartercentury, the College has screened films from its Betzwood collection for the public during its annual festival. In 2012, Eckhardt donated a variety of Betzwood artifacts – including manuscripts, photo albums, tape recordings and studio props that he acquired through this extensive research – to the archive, which is housed in a climate controlled space in MCCC’s Brendlinger Library in Blue Bell. Concert on Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Harriton High place every four years in Kerkrade, Netherlands, and draws School in Bryn Mawr, featuring band member and 20,000 musicians and half a million spectators. euphonium soloist Jan-Willem Jochems. “Playing with the Merion Concert Band is not too different from what I’m used to in Europe,” Mr. Jochems said. “There are no competitions here, though, so it’s more relaxed and enjoyable.” Mr. Jochems suggested Harlequin to play with the band after hearing it performed on You Tube by Steven Mead. “I was impressed,” he said. “It is an easy piece for the audience to listen to, yet it is challenging for the soloist and the band to play.” Harlequin, written by well-known British composer Philip Sparke, was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, British euphonium virtuoso David Childs. The piece is comprised of two movements: a slow and beautiful ballad followed by a frenetic Treat Yourself to a Massage! fast movement. Characters Harlequin and Zanni from the 16th century Italian theatre form Commedia Dell’Arte inspire the two movements. The April 27 concert is free and open to the public. Young People Recovery Dance at the New Leaf Club T

At the Delaware Valley Science Fair Emery earned an Honorable Mention from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Sixth Graders Christopher Zack of Newtown Square and Dylan Smoot of West Chester earned Second Place in Team Projects for “Yogo or Yogrow: Measuring the Amount of Life Cultures of Bacteria in Different Brands of Yogurt.” Eighth Grader Matthew Siracusa of Newtown Square received an Honorable Mention in Environmental Science for his project “Moving Vehicle Study of Fracking Sites.” The Chester County Science Research Competition is dedicated to encouraging, supporting and developing scientific inquiry and discovery through individual and team science projects conducted by elementary, middle and high school students. CCSRC provides an opportunity for students to pursue inquiry-based science through problem solving, planning and conducting research investigations, and using appropriate tools to gather and analyze data. This classic story has long been a family favorite! pper Darby Summer Stage presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Jr.,” one of Disney’s most classic tales. Performances are on July 23, 24, 25, and 26 at 10:30 a.m. and on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. The show is approximately 70 minutes and is ideal for ages 4 and up. July 23 is a special additional performance! In a magical kingdom below the surface of the ocean, Ariel (Olivia Cicalese of Swarthmore) wishes desperately to leave her home and live a life above the water. Local Business Woman Gayle Arnon (1952-2014) ayle Arnon, of Merion Station, passed away on April 9, after a long illness. Gayle was born and raised in Philadelphia, and she lived in San Diego for 14 years before returning to the Philadelphia area in 1985. She always loved teaching and was a dedicated and compassionate educator. She was an elementary school teacher for 20 years. She attended graduate school at Cabrini College while

At first she taught only a handful of kids, but by 2012 the business employed three other tutors and served dozens of students. working full time, and earned her Master’s degree and Reading Specialist certification. Gayle is survived by her husband of 25 years, Jonathan Arnon; son and daughter-in-law, David and Sarah Rosenberg of Swarthmore; grandchildren Maya, Tobey and Jude Rosenberg; stepson Jacob Arnon of Wynnewood; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Carol Segal of Downingtown; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Michael and Wendy Arnon of New York City; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Cindy Rosenberg of Mesa, Ariz. Gayle was laid to rest next to her parents, Joseph and Ida Segal.

Bands and musicians of all kinds are invited to participate in this all day musical event that will raise funds for The Brad Schoener Music Fund. Immaculata University is a Catholic, residential, coeducational institution of higher education, located on the Main Line between Malvern and Exton, 20 miles west of Philadelphia.

Science, Society and Sex: Pennsylvania Ballet Principal Dancer Julie Diana to Retire An Evening Conversation P with Faye Flam opular science writer, reporter and journalist Faye Flam will participate in a live “actor’s studio-style” interview involving all things science, society, sex and so much more. The Tuesday, April 29, 2014, highly anticipated event starts at 7 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Ludington Library and is sponsored by The Freethought Society (FS). FS President Margaret Downey will moderate and interview Flam on a wide variety of subjects relative to today’s science and social interaction in what will be an evening of conversation no one will want to miss. Audience participation will also be incorporated. “We are excited to present Faye Flam in this unique setting,” Downey said from the FS offices. “This setup allows a casual conversation to flow, and with Faye’s extensive science and research background and down-to-earth approach to knowledge, it’ll be a fantastic evening. It is sure to be a fun, educational and enjoyable time.” Flam is well-known in the Philadelphia area for her past science, evolution and contemporary columns in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Six Short Works span 22 years of the company’s performances for stage, alternative sites and film. They include “The Busker” a tongue-in-cheek solo from Le Dada Va Gaga 2011, the whimsical duet from Paper Waitress 2000, “I Remember” a reflective solo from The Keepers Project 2013, “Cleanse” an intimate solo from Salt 2009, and dance films Pre-Dinner Cocktails Honey created during a 2001 Yard Residency, Chilmark MA and the colorful Tales of the Buffoon 1992 created for WHYY TV. In addition to Mulgrew, the concert features talented company dancers – Joseph Cicala, Katie Horton, Leslie Ann Pike, Kate Rast, Barbara Tait and Megan Wilson Stern. Rounding out the program is a new solo work, Elevation 2014 created and performed by Ashley Searles. Searles spent 15 years as a dancer on the New York scene performing with companies such as Parsons Dance, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and Moving Theater. To end 21-year career with performances in Philadelphia & Washington ennsylvania Ballet Principal Dancer Julie Diana will retire after 21 years on stage with a performance of Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. She also will join the Company on its tour to The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC this June. An accomplished writer, Ms. Diana plans to focus on her writing and spend more time with her young family upon her retirement. “Julie is an artist of exceptional grace and arresting emotion,” Artistic Director Roy Kaiser says. “While we will surely miss her magnetic presence, we join her in celebrating this remarkable achievement and wish her the very best as she pursues her passions off stage and enjoys her beautiful family.” A New Jersey native, Ms. Diana began her professional career as a member of the Corps de Ballet at San Francisco Ballet in 1993 and rose through their ranks to a promotion to Principal Dancer in 2000. She joined Pennsylvania Ballet as a Principal Dancer in September 2004 and has danced countless roles in both the classical and contemporary repertoire, including principal roles in Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Afternoon of a Faun, and Serenade. She dances the principal role in George Balanchine’s Diamonds from Jewels in the upcoming nationwide PBS broadcast Pennsylvania Ballet at 50, airing Friday, May 2. Ms. Diana holds a B.A. in English from the University of Pennsylvania and writes for various dance publications. She is married to Pennsylvania Ballet Principal Dancer Zachary Hench, and they have two children. Residents of all faiths and their families were invited guests to share the Passover Sedar, a ritual observance for Jews commemorating the passage of the Jewish people from Egypt. Volunteers from Har Zion were led by co-chairs, Gladys Shubin and Barbara Berkowitz. Approximately 30 guests were in attendance for the service conducted by Inglis House’s Jewish chaplain, Cantor Naomi Hirsch, and enjoyed the sumptuous traditional Passover meal. Inglis is a specialty nursing care facility for adults with physical disabilities. It offers longterm rehabilitative medical and nursing care: physical, occupational and speech therapies; and social enrichment programs. I. du Pont, the founder of the DuPont Company, was an avid lover of the natural world. He declared his occupation as “botanist” when he immigrated to America with his family. His family established a tradition of taking a nature walk on the first day of May. E. I. du Pont’s youngest daughter describes one of her explorations in a letter to her sister in May 1828: “The Dogwood and hawthorn are in bloom all around… and their white blossoms contrast beautifully with the varied green of the young leaves, that just begin to throw a shadow over the thousand flowers that bloom beneath them.” NatureFest is held in their honor.
