Jay’s passion for music is a reflection of his overall creative talent. Artist Tom Nussbaum explores narrative framework through psychological metaphors hiladelphia-born, New Jersey-based artist Tom Nussbaum is in the spotlight at Rowan University Art Gallery. His solo show, “Heads and Tales,” showcases a progression in his practice that moves between the representational and the abstract. The exhibit runs March 31 - May 10, 2014. A reception and gallery talk will be held on Wednesday, April 16, from 5 - 7 p.m. “Heads and Tales” is an exhibition of selected studio work from the last 16 years, featuring a variety of mediums in which Nussbaum locates common attributes that embody a narrative framework. “My work is the result of a process of self-discovery, a personal mining of images that have psychological meaning,” Nussbaum states. “Some of the work expresses interior feelings, and much of it focuses on relationships; between family members and friends, between the individual and society, and between the conscious and subconscious self.” The work developed out of Nussbaum’s lifelong interest in building things that express his view of the world. He uses form and color and connections that can be found in the patterns and construction of fabrics and textiles from around the world, whether the micro and macro forms found in nature or man-made patterns such as interconnecting circuits and the world-wide web. “The free-standing forms reflect my interest in architecture and the structural frameworks of buildings and towers, mixed with references to the human figure,” he adds. “In some way these are all figures and vessel forms or containers, and as such also connect to my earlier work and the history of ceramics and basket making.” Nussbaum is known for a variety of work including drawings, paper cuts, prints, sculpture, children’s books, animations, functional design objects, and site-specific commis-
sions. His sculpture and works on paper have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States. Since 1987 he has completed more than 30 site-specific commissions located in a variety of public settings including public plazas, train stations, schools, hospitals, and environmental centers. In 1985 he began The Acme Robot Company, a cottage industry producing night-lights and light fixtures of his design. In 1988 he founded Atomic Iron Works, designing and producing iron hat and coat racks and other useful items. In 1992

Musician Satirist Roy Zimmerman in Philadelphia to Perform “Blue Dot Tour”

he Freethought Society and the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia are announce the return of Roy Zimmerman to the Philadelphia area. Zimmerman’s “Blue Dot Tour” performance of original and funny songs about ignorance, war, greed, hope, struggle, change, and more greed takes place on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Zimmerman’s one-of-a-kind performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ethical Society’s Building located at 1906 South Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia. Admission is $18, with $15 for students and seniors. Zimmerman is a satirical songwriter in the Tom Lehrer/Phil Ochs tradition. The “Blue Dot Tour” is ninety minutes of these songs — funny songs like The Faucet’s on Fire! and I Want a Marriage Like They Had In the Bible. Zimmerman’s concert includes heartfelt songs such as Hope, Struggle and Change and I Approve This Message. Zimmerman spent the “Comedy Boom” years of the ’80s doing stand-up in San Francisco, sharing stages with George Carlin, Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, and many others. He wrote all the material for his funny folk music quartet The Foremen, recording two albums for Warner/Reprise Records. “Roy Zimmerman simultaneously inspires me and makes me laugh my ass off,” says comedian/author Paul Krassner. In thirteen albums over twenty years, Zimmerman has brought the sting of satire to the struggle for peace and social justice. His songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime. Zimmerman has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records, and he has been profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered. Passover is Almost Here, and We Have Way More than Four Questions By Joyce Eisenberg and Ellen Scolnic emember when macaroons, the coconut Passover treat, came in only vanilla and chocolate? Now the supermarket displays are stocked with chocolate almond, chocolate dipped, chocolate chip, chocolate chunk, and doubly chocolate gluten-free. Choosing one is almost as confusing as deciding whether our teeth need the toothpaste with “advanced whitening” or “tartar protection.” We’ve been known to stand before the drugstore shampoo display paralyzed with indecision. Is our hair fine or limp? We understand how Russian immigrants, for whom shopping used to mean standing in a bread line, felt when they entered an American supermarket for the first time and were bewildered by the variety and abundance of consumer goods. Shopping requires some soul-searching. To buy chicken broth, we have to weigh the relative evils of fat, salt, chemicals and chickens that haven’t been allowed to roam free. The problem is solved when we find a box that promises none of the above – at twice the cost. We also have to debate the merits of tried and true vs. something new. That turns out to be easy: The brand-new, “light whole wheat Bran Matzos” don’t even tempt us. We’ll stick with the plain kind. After we navigate the grocery aisles, we realize that with Pesach coming, we have way more than four questions: 1. Do we have enough room to include Uncle Harold’s “lady friend” this year? 2. Where exactly should we put that orange on the seder plate? 3. Will our family want the same-old haroset (the apple-wine mixture) or would they enjoy an exotic Sephardic version? 4. Should we finally buy new prayer books or use the raggedy old ones. There are thousands of haggadot – the prayer book that details the songs and order of the Passover seder – in existence, from an ecological haggadah that asks us to think about the four trees to a feminist haggadah that focuses on the contributions of Miriam, Sarah, Rachel and other women in Jewish history. Other haggadot themes include LGTB, interfaith, and hip-hop (for those who want their Jewish tunes written by rap artists). The 30-Minute Seder

Dr. Allan Pack is the John L. Miclot Professor of Medicine, Director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology and Chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. On the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania since 1976, he directed an NIH-funded Specialized Center of Research on sleep apnea from 1988 to 2008. He directs two Center grants—The Mechanisms of Alterations in Sleep with Age and Endophenotypes of Sleep Apnea and Role of Obesity. He is the Founding Director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology and the Division of Sleep Medicine. These are the first multidisciplinary independent sleep research and clinical sleep medicine programs to be established at any medical school in the United States. Dr. Pack has received a number of awards for his activities including the Nathaniel Kleitman Lifetime Achievement Award and the William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Sleep Foundation, and the Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Richard Schwab is the Co-Medical Director of the Penn Sleep Center and Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His focus of his research on the pathogenesis and genetics of obstructive sleep apnea is to understand the mechanisms leading to sleep apnea by evaluating the structure and function of the upper airway. Dr. Schwab is particularly interested in the relationship of obesity to sleep apnea. He is also studying novel treatment options for sleep apnea and trying to understand the genetics of sleep apnea. Presently, Dr. Schwab leads the Pulmonary Imaging Center in its investigation of the upper airway. The final lecture in the Healthy Conversations series will be “Headcase” on May 20, on the warning signs and dangers of concussions featuring Dr. Branch Coslett, Chief, Section of Cognitive Neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Sami Khella, attending neurologist at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. There’s even a new edition of the Maxwell House Passover Haggadah, which more than 50 million people have used since it was first printed in the 1930s. It’s considered the longestrunning sales promotion in advertising history. On the inside cover it asks three questions: Do we want Master Blend, Breakfast Blend or Original Roast? Dayenu. While we’re all in favor of diversity, we prefer to stick with the haggadot we pieced together through the years. We copied pages with our favorite passages, added in catchy songs from preschool, and deleted the parts we didn’t like. There is one chief advantage to hosting the seder: We get to choose the haggadah. As the most famous Pharaoh, Yul Brenner, said, “So let it be written; so let it be done.” When we were young, the choices – both secular and religious – were few. Watching TV meant walking over to the set and turning the channel from ABC to CBS to NBC. Three channels, not three hundred. Buying sneakers meant choosing between Keds and Converse, and buying coffee meant instant or perked. Now we can’t buy sneakers until we decide if we are going to use them for tennis, running or walking. (Go for cross-trainers if you’re indecisive.) Buying a cup of coffee requires weighing the merits of venti vs. grande, cream vs. nonfat soy, and fair trade vs. exploitation. Passover was simpler then, too. There seemed to be just one recipe for haroset; it had apples and walnuts, not dates and pistachios and ginger. There was just one cup on the table for Elijah. osabeth “Rosie” Kays is in very rare company. The Neumann University senior is one of just 13 young women in the country to receive a 2014 NCAA Women’s Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship. The scholarship is a $7,500 award for the 2014-15 academic year. Recipients must be enrolled in a sports-related program as a full-time graduate student. Kays has already been accepted to qualified programs at Barry University, Drexel University, Temple University, the University of Connecticut, and Virginia Commonwealth University. She’s weighing her options and negotiating for graduate assistantships. “I was ecstatic when I found out about the scholarship,” admits the sport and entertainment management major from Palmyra, PA. “I want to be an athletic director at a small college or university, so a graduate degree in this field fits my career plans perfectly.” As an added bonus, scholarship recipients get to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum (CSF), scheduled for June 5-8 at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis, Indiana. The CSF is an educational event about careers in sports with a primary focus on intercollegiate athletics. It gives 200 selected student-athletes the opportunity to network and learn from current athletic professionals. Scholarship recipients’ expenses (airfare, lodging and meals) are covered by the NCAA. Sarah Kurpel, senior woman administrator in the Neumann Athletic Department, urged Kays to apply for the scholarship in October of last year. Requirements included an online application, an essay about career goals, and three letters of recommendation. During her years at Neumann, Kays played soccer and served as a Presidential Ambassador, Resident Assistant, and Orientation Leader. She also excelled in the classroom, gaining membership to the Delta Pi Epsilon Sigma National Honor Society as well as the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.
