Israeli Shuk Recreates an Old Jerusalem Marketplace June 1 More than 100 students from six schools for the blind will participate in band, drum circle, bell choir and concert choir. Presented by the MurphyBlatt Family in memory of M. Christine Murphy Israeli Shuk: The Marketplace in action. Photo/Nancy Lefkoe he Israeli Shuk: The Marketplace on The Main Line, Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Adath Israel, recreates the sights, sounds, fragrances, and flavors of a Shuk in Old Jerusalem. Visitors of all ages will be able to taste popular Israeli foods, purchase Israeli products and Judaica, enjoy Israeli and Jewish music and folk dancing, and connect with a variety of non-profit organizations. In the children’s area, pre-schoolers through teens will participate in Israeli-themed activities, story times, craft projects, and dancing. Visitors walk through an arch into a Shuk in Old Jerusalem, and catch the aroma of falafel being fried in hot oil, as baba ganoush and hummus salads beckon. Ahead is a café serving baklava, coffee, and tea with nana. Colorful awnings decorate booths displaying kippot, tallitot, hand-made challah and matzoh covers, pottery, glass mezzuzot and jewelry, ceramic Judaica, Naot Sandals, clothing, accessories, wall tapestries, Israeli artwork, wooden tzedakah boxes, and more. Jerusalem’s skyline adorns the East, and the Adath Israel Singers and other entertainers perform Israeli and Jewish music in the town square, as outside, Rak Dan teaches traditional Israeli folk dances. Curious onlookers surround a Vine Dining chef demonstrating Israeli vegan cooking techniques, while Citron and Rose’s chef shows visitors the art of creating Israeli delicacies. In the children’s area, two- to seven-year-olds explore Israel using all five senses, play in a mini shuk and an archeological dig, while older children decorate planters, plant vegetables, and bake dog bones for Israeli Guide Dogs. JKids Philly reads stories to the young visitors, and Israeli dancing keeps the youngsters moving happily. Modular toys made in Israel and juvenile books about Israel and Jewish subjects are for sale. Children’s area is active from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Israeli Shuk is a partnership of Temple Beth Hillel–Beth El, Main Line Reform Temple, Har Zion Temple, Beth David, Beth Am Israel, and Adath Israel, sponsored by Joseph Levine & Sons, Inc., with a grant from Suburban Jewish Community Center – Bnai Aaron’s Life Long Learning / Tikkun Olam Fund. Inis Nua Presents “What the Animals Say” hiladelphia’s Inis Nua Theatre Company will present “A Play, a Pie and a Pint” at 6:30 p.m. on May 20, 21 and 22 at Fergie’s Pub, 1214 Sansom Street in Philadelphia. Our “casually brilliant” offering is “What the Animals Say” by David Ireland, starring Sean Bradley and James Kern and directed by Tom Reing. “What the Animals Say” is a bitterly funny look at rivalry and prejudice. In a chance meeting, two old Belfast schoolmates dive into comparing their contrasting careers in acting and football. Their no-holds-barred banter about race, sexuality, religion and sectarianism leaves political correctness gasping for air! David Ireland is a Belfast playwright whose play “The End of Hope, the End of Desire” was a previous Inis Nua contribution to A Play, a Pie and a Pint. Tickets are $15 and include a beer or soft drink and choice of meat or vegetable pie. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the performance starts at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, go to: http://inisnuatheatre.ticketleap.com/second-helping-2014/. For information, phone 215-454-9776.

reedom Credit Union and the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU), along with guest speaker Matt Delucia, an NBC 10 Philadelphia reporter, recognized exemplary educators in Montgomery County with the “Voices of Inspiration Awards for Teaching Excellence,” on May 7, 2014 at a special dinner ceremony. Twenty-three finalists – one from each of the twenty-one Montgomery County school districts, one from a nonpublic school in the county, and one from the MCIU – were honored at the ceremony which took place at the Philadelphia Marriott West in Conshohocken, PA. Each of the 23 finalists was awarded with a commemorative plaque and a $500 award was given to three grand prize winners: Ellen Strange, Instrumental Music Teacher at Rydal Elementary School, Holly Smith, Math Support Teacher at Spring-Ford 5th/6th Grade Center and Todd Kelley, English Teacher/Theater Director at Pottsgrove High School. Additionally, Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School received a $500 award as the school in Montgomery County with the most nominations. Included in the group was 3rd Grade Teacher Rebecca Brenner of Cynwyd Elementary. Voices of Inspiration, initiated in 2007, received an enthusiastic response this year with 609 nominations for more than 300 teachers and the participation of all school districts. Freedom Credit Union is committed to improving communities through financial education, and the Voices of Inspiration program is one important way to honor that commitment. “Freedom is proud to recognize this well-deserving group of educators as true voices of inspiration,” said Lee T. MacMinn, Freedom Credit Union President/CEO. “We are happy that Voices of Inspiration has received such a warm response and great participation from the Montgomery County school districts.” Approximately 130 educators, superintendents, family members, and other supporters attended the event to commend the awardees on their superior commitment to teaching. “The outstanding teachers recognized at the eighth annual Voices of Inspiration awards are certainly an inspiration,” said Dr. Bradley C. Landis, MCIU Substitute Executive Director. “The MCIU is pleased to continue its partnership with Freedom Credit Union to celebrate the dedication of educators in our schools.”

Therefore, I’m grateful that I can give back to a constant stream of communications students at my graduate school alma mater,” Rudman said. “I feel an insatiable need to provide the unique hands-on training opportunities to accommodate those students in reaching their goals in the video world.” TUTV has worked with nearly every school and college at Temple, as well as Temple Athletics and Temple Campus Safety Services, to create programming, so its impact extends well beyond Annenberg Hall. “We are honored that Kal and Lucille Rudman continue to invest in Temple’s students,” said Temple President Neil D. Theobald. “Their ongoing generosity will make a difference in the lives of Temple students, and we are grateful for their support.” Since 2010, students have experienced moments at TUTV that will forever be in their memories. From the studios in the media production center and on location around the globe, TUTV students have produced live newscasts, interviewed the crew of the International Space Station, reported live from London during the 2012 Summer Olympics, provided coverage of sporting events and much more. Karina Cheung, a junior media studies and production major who worked this year as the Rudman Media Production Center intern, said Space Station Live “was one of the most exciting shows that I ever worked on,” but it was just a piece of the well-rounded experience TUTV has offered her as she pursues her dream of becoming an anchor, reporter and producer. “If I didn’t have the opportunity to work on all these projects under TUTV, I don’t think I’d be prepared to work after college,” Cheung said. “All the opportunities TUTV creates for students is what molds us and makes us learn everything we can outside of the classroom.” A TUTV staffer both as a student and after graduation, Rob Czyzewicz, BTMM ’10, coowner of 20/20 Visual Media, was in master control when the station first went on the air. “I’m very proud to see how much the station has grown in the almost four years since,” he said. “TUTV has a lot of growing left to do and I can’t wait to see how far they take it.” Czyzewicz said the diversity of programming now shown on TUTV helps students prepare for their professional lives. “There truly is something for everyone,” he said. “Students can take a shot at doing news, sports, documentary, film, music, talk, public affairs, variety shows and so much more. If they invest themselves in learning how to work on any one of these types of shows, they can do it.” Paul Gluck, TUTV general manager and associate professor of media studies and production, agreed that the practical experience students receive is invaluable. “It continues TUTV’s mission of being a multi-media laboratory, where students can apply the theory they learn at Temple to a daily broadcast,” he said. “It helps them leave this school with a competitive advantage in the search for a job.” Under Gluck’s leadership, TUTV’s presence on campus and in the community has grown stronger over the past four years. “We feel like we have developed viable options for viewers,” he said. “We’ve seen students become more and more involved in the creation and distribution of content. We’ve seen awareness of the station grow among students, faculty and members of the community surrounding Temple.” The Rudmans have been impressed with all TUTV has done to inspire Temple students to pursue a career in broadcasting and want to see its impact expand even more. “Under the guidance of Paul Gluck, the students have created incredible content and I’ve witnessed them take home Emmy Awards in various categories alongside of the top TV professionals in the Mid-Atlantic region,” Rudman said. “This makes me and my wife, Lucille, totally proud to have contributed to their success.” The Rudmans’ $1 million investment in the future of TUTV will support its general operations as well as special projects as they arise. “No one has made the commitment to our students, our staff, AND our mission the way Kal and Lucille have,” Gluck said. Born and raised just blocks away from Temple’s campus, Rudman is a music and show business legend. For more than 50 years, he has worked in music and radio and his pioneering trade publication, Friday Morning Quarterback, remains invaluable reading for today’s music industry professionals. In honor of his success in the industry, he was awarded a Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Award in 2011. His philanthropy has left an indelible mark throughout Temple, with his support of the Temple Performing Arts Center, the School of Medicine and more. The impact of the Rudmans’ generosity isn’t lost on Temple students who have spent countless hours working and learning in the media production center. “TUTV taught me that anything I wanted to do is possible as long as I put the work in and that the opportunities to learn are out there,” Cheung said.
