n the evening of Sunday, May 18, two days before the Pennsylvania Primary Election, 200 local Democratic Party volunteers, candidates, and elected officials will take a break from campaigning to honor four former local officeholders. The occasion is the annual Spring Dinner of the Democratic Committee of Lower Merion and Narberth (DCLMN). The honorees are: Jane Dellheim, Lower Merion Township Commissioner for Ward 8 (2001 - 2013); Lyn Kugel, Lower Merion School Board Member (2003 - 2013); Heidi Boise, Narberth Borough Council Member (2006 - 2013; and Andrea Deutsch, Narberth Borough Council Member (2012 - 2013). “What sets Jane, Lyn, Heidi, and Andrea apart is their boundless energy and optimism,” explains Joe Foster, chair of DCLMN and vice chair of the county’s Democratic Committee. “They worked hard, were well-informed, and forged relationships with neighbors, parents, staff, and fellow elected officials – of both parties – and as a result, were able to bring people together to solve the challenges we as a community were facing.” Dellheim points to the creation of Linwood Park in Ardmore, one of her signature achievements as a commissioner, as a prime example of the positive power of building relationships. “By earning the trust of the neighbors, township and county staff, local businesses, and ultimately, the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners, we were able to turn a parking lot into a beautiful park,” says Dellheim. “One of the outcomes I am most proud of is that Linwood Park is being managed by the neighbors, and they’re doing a magnificent job.” Narberth’s Marlene Richmond, Co-Chair of the DCLMN Spring

O

Executive Committee, shares Foster’s view of the honorees’ energy level and ability to get things done. “As a Narberth resident and Committee Person, I’ve worked with Heidi and Andrea extensively. They don’t know the meaning of the words, ‘my plate is full.’ And when you consider that both of them also run businesses, I’m even more impressed with what they’ve been able to accomplish for the Narberth community.” The proximity of the dinner to the May 20 Primary Election is no accident according to Foster. “A number of the Democratic candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and State Representative will be attending the dinner and will address the audience. This gives them one final opportunity to sway the people who will be working at the polls two days later. Given the number of Democrats in Lower Merion and expected turnout, winning over DCLMN Committee People is important to a candidate’s success in the primary.” DCLMN’s Spring Dinner will take place at the Bala Golf Club, 2200 Belmont Avenue in Philadelphia. The cocktail hour starts at 5:30 p.m.; the dinner and program at 6:30. Tickets can be purchased online at DCLMN’s website, www.democratslmn.org. The Democratic Committee of Lower Merion and Narberth (DCLMN) is an all-volunteer group of active, committed Democrats whose mission is to provide the boots on the ground critical to the election of Democrats to local, county, state, and national office. DCLMN includes more than 85 elected and appointed committee people, each serving voters in a specific precinct in Lower Merion or Narberth. Follow DCLMN on Twitter @LMNPADems.

This year’s event highlights the expansion of the Brad Schoener MusicMan Camp to be held at Beverly Hills Middle School from June 23 through July 3. The camp is open to entering 4th graders thru entering 8th graders. The camp welcomes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year band students as well as 2nd & 3rd year string players! Sample MusicMan Camp workshops will be offered for young musicians during the Music Marathon – camp registration forms can be found at www.udmusicmarathon.org or at the MusicMan tent at the Marathon. Brad Schoener was an amazing musician and inspirational music teacher for thousands of students in the Upper Darby School District. The Music Marathon grew out of an idea of Brad’s to create an event that was a celebration of music of all kinds with professionals and students sharing music together. Brad was excited about the idea and so are his family and hundreds of students and alumni, colleagues and friends. Brad lost a five-year battle with cancer in March 2009 but will never be forgotten by the hundreds of students and audience members whose lives he enriched. The Brad Schoener Music Fund was established to provide assistance to promising young musicians by providing support for music lessons and other educational opportunities. The Fund is supervised by the Upper Darby Arts and Education Foundation, a private, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. As a performer she opened the door for so many female stand-ups and studying her comedic style has taught me so much about comedy. She was also a generous mentor and integral part of the process of making Always a Lady, a piece I created with Jilline Ringle in 2004 about the history of women in comedy. Former Inmates and Officers Return to Abandoned Cellblocks to Share Memories with the Public E

May 7 – May 13, 2014

12th Annual THE Party

astern State Penitentiary will host its annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday, May 10 with hour-long Q&A sessions at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Each year, former inmates, corrections officers, and administrative workers return to the abandoned cellblocks of Eastern State to share their stories and to answer questions from the public. Many of Eastern State’s former inmates and staff enjoy returning to the cellblocks to remember old times. This year, more than 15 alumni will gather with the public for an informal roundtable discussion about daily life at the penitentiary, which has been closed for more than 40 years. Previous discussions have addressed work details, recreation, and race relations within the 185-year-old penitentiary complex. This event is included with standard admission to the penitentiary. Tickets can be purchased in advance at easternstate.org/tickets. Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is located at 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue, just five blocks from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The penitentiary is open seven days a week, year round. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students and children ages 7-12. (Not recommended for children under the age of seven.) Admission includes “The Voices of Eastern State” Audio Tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi; HandsOn History interactive experiences; history exhibits; and a critically acclaimed series of artist installations. For information and schedules, the public should call 215-236-3300 or visit www.easternstate.org.

“Paradigm Shift: Making the Possible A Reality” D at Chabad of Penn Wynne his May, Chabad of Penn Wynne will present “Paradigm Shift: Transformational Life Teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,” a new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute. The course will be offered as part of a series of local activities in Wynnewood marking 20 years since the passing of “the Rebbe,” Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson of righteous memory. The Rebbe was a visionary religious leader who inspired countless individuals during his lifetime and established a global network of educational, social, and religious institutions to revive the post-holocaust Jewish landscape. “Paradigm Shift” will be offered in Wynnewood over six Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning May 12, 2014. The course will explore Rabbi Schneerson’s philosophy and outlook, offering participants the chance to see things from a radically different perspective. “It’s like putting on a new pair of glasses through which everything appears much more vivid; it enables you to see so much more,” explained Rabbi Zalman Abraham of JLI’s Brooklyn headquarters. “The Rebbe guided individuals to see the potential and inherent goodness in themselves, in others, and in every circumstance of their lives—and we hope to convey a glimpse of this outlook to participants of the course.” Paradigm Shift is a monumental contribution to the Rebbe’s legacy—the product of a collaboration of over two dozen experts on Rabbi Schneerson’s teachings. It addresses questions such as: What were the Rebbe’s central teachings and contributions to Judaism and society? What was his understanding of the human being and what were his hopes for humanity? What stands behind the continued success of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement? And how can we apply these insights toward living a more purposeful life? “We all want to live up to our inherent design, to make the best of the unique set of skills and circumstances that we were given,” said Rabbi Moshe Brennan local JLI instructor in Wynnewood. “Paradigm Shift is the first step; it’s about visualizing what is possible and seeing how you can make it a reality.” Like all JLI programs, “Paradigm Shift” is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Interested students may call 610-529-9011 or visit www.chabadpennwynne.org for registration and other course-related information.
