Narberth Ambulance is the non-profit, 911 medical service aiding the Lower Merion, Narberth, and Conshohocken areas. Wines by Little Black Dress and hors d’ouevres will be served during the demonstration. Buyers are attracted to her landscapes that capture quiet moments in nature with a sense of soft drama as well as architectural pieces comprised of solid drawing, vibrant brushstrokes and a warm palette. In the tradition of Plein Air painting, which requires a quick response to the landscape, Elise will work through a completed painting in two hours while the audience watches her progression, palette set up and finishing touches. She will comment about what she is doing and thinking about the process. Elise N. Phillips was born in Wayne, Pennsylvania into a family with a strong background in the fine arts. Redman, Artistic Director, makes her debut with The Savoy Company. Glenside’s Peter Hilliard, Music Director, returns for his second year and conducts the professional orchestra. Jenkintown’s Aaron Manthey serves as Producer and Wayne’s Geoffrey Berwind serves as Assistant Producer. “Trial By Jury” is a story set to song about a jilted bride, a brash groom, and a breach of promise of marriage lawsuit in which the learned judge and legal system are the objects of lighthearted satire. The cast of “Trial By Jury,” drawn from Philadelphia and the suburbs, stars: West Chester’s Samuel Griffin as the Judge, Lafayette Hill’s Ross Druker as the Defendant (Edwin), Philadelphia’s Gene Schneyer as the Counsel, Broomall’s Mary Punshon as the Plaintiff (Angelina), and Havertown’s Thomas Sweitzer as the Jury Foreman. The show features Conshohocken’s Jennifer Bibbs as the Other Woman and as Bridesmaids: Cinzia Lombardo (Clifton Heights), Melissa Burdick (Bryn Mawr), Portia Bosch (New Oxford), Mickey Hewes and Linda Marie Bell (both from Philadelphia). The Chorus – Jury and Spectators – brings the courtroom to life with their action and reaction to the trial of the 19th century. “The Sorcerer” satirizes Victorian class distinction via the magical spell cast by the sorcerer and the love potion spikedtea ingested by villagers who fall asleep and then awaken to fall in love with the wrong person. The cast of “The Sorcerer” stars: Berwyn’s Fred Dittmann as Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, an elderly Baronet, Philadelphia’s Peter Webb as Alexis of the Grenadier Guards – his son, Wayne’s Fred Wampler as Dr. Daly, the Vicar, New Oxford’s Guillermo Bosch as the Notary, Wayne’s John Chesney as John Wellington Wells of J. W. Wells & Co., Family Sorcerers, West Chester’s Martha Smylie as Lady Sangazure a Lady of Ancient Lineage, Philadelphia’s Meghan Curry as Aline, her daughter – bethrothed to Alexis, Broomall’s Mary Punshon as Mrs. Partlet, the Pew Opener, and Philadelphia’s Jennifer Chesterson as Constance, her daughter. The Chorus – the Villagers of Ploverleigh – is charming and merry inviting everyone into the enchantment surrounding the betrothal festivities.

The Savoy Company was founded in 1901 by Dr. Alfred Reginald Allen, a young medical school graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He wanted to prove that first-rate amateur productions of the famed Gilbert & Sullivan operettas following the original traditions created by “G&S” would be successful in America. Too long had American performances of the operettas been marred by producers attempting to “modernize” the operettas by changing dialogues, settings and even the music. So, a group of Dr. Allen’s acquaintances rehearsed and then presented “Trial By Jury” at the Merion Cricket Club, in Haverford, PA, on May 4, 1901 to great acclaim. This success led to the founding of a more permanent organization known as The Savoy Company dedicated solely to producing the G&S operettas. The Savoy Company undertook successfully the double bill of “Trial By Jury” and “The Sorcerer” on December 6 and 7, 1901 at St. James Hall and two weeks later reprised the performances at the Manheim (Germantown) Cricket Club. A unique and noble tradition was born. Since 1901, The Savoy Company has been one of the shining lights in the Philadelphia cultural, philanthropic, and social arenas. It is the oldest amateur theater company in the world dedicated to the production of the 13 existing Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Famous Savoyards have included: Hollywood film star Nelson Eddy, Broadway star Wilbur Evans, Metropolitan Opera soprano Margaret Harshaw, and Wagnerian bass-baritone James Pease. The Savoy Company supports local charitable organizations, provides creative and social outlets for its members; and gives the audience the most exhilarating theatrical and cultural G&S experience. The Savoy Company will present this double-bill of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Trial By Jury” and “The Sorcerer” at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA, on June 13 and 14 at 8:30 p.m. (rain dates June 15 and 16) in the Open Air Theatre. Tickets are $30. Parking for all performances is free. Call 215-735-7161 or go to www.Savoy.org to purchase tickets online or for info. (Ticket price includes admission to Longwood Gardens for the entire day and re-admission on the same day.)

Steve Barbone and His Dixieland Band Jazz Vespers and ice cream social featuring Steve Barbone and his Dixieland Band will be presented on June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Union United Methodist Church, 200 Brookline Blvd., Havertown, PA 19083. A reception and an opportunity to meet the artists will follow the service. A freewill offering will be accepted. For info, call 610-789-1700 or see www.Unionhavertown.org.

uburban Square will host a free outdoor music series throughout the month of June. The concert series will feature the region’s top musical acts and related entertainment each weekend in June in the Main Courtyard. “We’re excited to host the June Music Series and provide the community with some of the very best music stylings our area has to offer,” said Mark Curran, General Manager of Suburban Square. “Families will be able to spend the whole day enjoying great music, as well as the best shopping and dining our region has to offer.” Opening the June Music Series on Friday, June 6 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. will be Amber Rae & the Swinging Foxes, a genre-blending collective with a sound that is vintage blues, mixed with 1930s and 40s swing. Attendees will also be able to take advantage of Suburban Square’s Sidewalk Sale, happening the same day, where over 40 property retailers will share their seasonal sale items outdoors. On Saturday, June 14, round up the entire family because Cat’s Pajamas will take the stage from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., bringing a musical comedy twist to high-octane kid rock. More than a concert, the Cats invite audiences from the very first note to enter a wild, wonderful world of stories, dance and puppets, all backed by great music. Save some room for fun because Family Fun Day at Suburban Square will also offer everything from face painting to balloon animals and giveaways. Ryan Tennis will entertain audiences on Saturday, June 21 from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m., bringing a charming, authentic sound that is reminiscent of legends Paul Simon, Bill Withers and Ben Harper. While his disarming lyrics and catchy melodies display a rare sensitivity, the intensity of his live performances hint at his gridiron past. Concluding the series on Saturday, June 28 from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. will be Andrew Neu, an artist known to blend a unique mix of jazz, R&B, classical and Latin music. All music performances will take place in the Main Courtyard and are free and open to the public. Recommended for children ages four and up, this story – based on the classic L. This bright musical is charged with a bundle of wonderful songs and thrill after thrill for kids and kids at heart! The story begins when a cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. When Dorothy’s house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Performing in PCS Children’s Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch’s powerful silver slippers. On her way to meet the great Oz, Dorothy befriends the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, who accompany her on the adventure. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister. Eventually, Glinda the Good Witch helps Dorothy defeat the evil witch and her winged monkeys. The great and powerful wizard grants Dorothy’s friends their wishes and of course, helps Dorothy return to Kansas. From the book by Tim Kelly and music by Frank Francoeur, director Brian Walsh has assembled a talented cast to tell this beloved tale. Local actors from Swarthmore, Media, Wallingford, Springfield, Ridley Park, Eddystone, Primos, West Chester and Philadelphia, PA plus Wilmington, DE bring this story to life: Meg Cranney, Ryan Goulden, Kenny Fischer, Chaz Meyers, Leeia Ferguson, Krystal Grace Royer, Marin Lent, Joseph Cartegna, Jr., Cathy Baum, Jacqueline McCarney, Crystal Nielsen,

The War of 1812: Celebrating Our National Anthem – at Fort Mifflin xplore the history of what is sometimes referred to as “America’s second war for independence” at a Fort that was garrisoned and prepared to defend the city of Philadelphia at that time. In celebration of the bicentennial of our National Anthem Fort Mifflin will highlight a special but little-known connection between Fort Mifflin and Fort McHenry. Lt Col Samuel Smith was ordered by General Washington to take command of Fort Mifflin in September of 1777. Washington noted, “The keeping of this fort is of very great importance, and I rely on your prudence, spirit and bravery for a vigorous and persevering defense.” By 1814 Smith had been promoted to General and was in charge of the defense of Baltimore during the bombardment there. We can presume that he put the lessons learned during the defense of Mud Island to good use in assuring an American victory in Baltimore! Fort Mifflin’s Officer’s Quarters, recently damaged in a tragic fire, is also celebrating its bicentennial. Donations in support of restoration projects are welcome. Join the “troops” at Fort Mifflin for guided tours and living history activities including the opportunity to join the “Fort Mifflin Rifle Regiment!” Be sure to bring your best voice as we will be recording pop-up-choirs singing the Star Spangled Banner for participation in the Smithsonian Institution’s celebration of the National Anthem “Raise it Up! Anthem for America.” Join the fun on Saturday June 7 from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. General admission tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for Veterans and students under 12. Cash only at the event entrance please, but credit cards may be used to purchase tickets at www.FortMifflin.us.

A LEX ’ S L EMONADE C OMMEMORATES 10 Y EARS OF F IGHTING C HILDHOOD C ANCER Hosts National Lemonade Days, June 6-8, 2014 lex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, will commemorate a milestone in their history, 10 years of fighting childhood cancer, with the return of National Lemonade Days, June 6-8, 2014. This summer will mark 10 years since 8-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004) challenged the nation to help her raise $1 million for childhood cancer cures, one cup of lemonade at a time. The Foundation will once again invite volunteers across the country to host lemonade stands over the course of three days to continue Alex’s mission and bring renewed attention to the fight against childhood cancer. ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including hers. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her ambitious goal one dollar and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex would reach her million dollar goal before losing her life to cancer in August of that year. Each June, the weekend before Father’s Day, Alex’s mission of raising $1 million returns through National Lemonade Days, when supporters everywhere contribute to a cure. The Foundation was built upon the principle that you are never too young to make a difference in the lives of others. Following in the footsteps of Alex Scott, the Foundation encourages volunteers everywhere to participate in National Lemonade Days, including many stands held by children. During National Lemonade Days, ALSF offers support to all volunteers who sign up to host lemonade stands. In addition to having access to a member of the Foundation’s staff to help with any lemonade stand needs, Lemonade Days participants also receive a limited edition box while supplies last. The box consists of materials to assist in the fundraising process including: a 2 ft. by 3 ft. ALSF banner, thank you notes, stickers, balloons, posters, adult and child speaking points and a pre-paid return envelope for proceeds. In 2014, the Foundation will also launch a social media campaign to encourage support across the country and world to utilize the hashtag #OneCupAtATime. All participants, whether they host a lemonade stand, visit a stand, or encourage others to do so, will utilize the hashtag to show their support for the Foundation on twitter, instagram, Facebook and more. For information on National Lemonade Days, and to sign up to host a lemonade stand, visit: AlexsLemonade.org/LemonadeDays.

Hospital Offers New Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)™ Procedure To Diagnose and Plan Treatment for a Lesion Deep in the Lung pringfield Hospital now offers a new procedure called Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) that offers patients a minimally-invasive option to locate, enable biopsy and plan treatment for a lesion (spot) detected deep in the lung. Springfield Hospital will provide the SuperDimension® i•Logic™ System (Super-D) as an option for patients with lesions on their lungs by conventional bronchoscopy. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that uses the patient’s natural airways to access lesions that were previously hard to reach. Typically a patient with a spot on their lung had the options of major surgery to remove a section of the lung, bronchoscopy (which does not reach lesions deep in the lung), needle biopsy, or watchful waiting. The ENB procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and its unique approach may increase the chances that a patient will safely get a diagnosis and begin treatment, if needed. “We are pleased to offer a minimally-invasive alternative for patients who have a lesion on their lung that is hard to reach or cannot tolerate a more invasive procedure,” said Wei Bin, M.D., pulmonologist. “This is an option that will help many patients locate lesions and plan for the appropriate treatment.” To learn more about lung disease, detection, and options for diagnosing a lesion in the lung visit: www.spotonyourlung.com and www.superdimension.com. Springfield Hospital, a part of Crozer-Keystone Health System, is a not-for-profit community hospital that provides comprehensive acute-care services and wellness care. Each year, Springfield Hospital admits more than 1,700 patients and receives more than 11,000 Emergency Department visits. For information, visit www.crozerkeystone.org.

Celebrate the American Flag and the U.S. Army During Philadelphia’s Stripes and Stars Festival elebrate the shared birthday of two of our country’s greatest institutions – the American flag and the U.S. Army – during Philadelphia’s Stripes and Stars Festival on Saturday, June 14, 2014. Events include flag raising ceremonies, giant flag folding demonstrations, a special exhibition on the history of the flag, and a moving naturalization ceremony. In connection with the Army’s 239th birthday, the festival will also feature appearances by the Army’s elite ceremonial units, including the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Drill Team, the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard, the Continental Color Guard, the U.S. Army Brass Quintet, and U.S. Army Voices. Festival events will take place at locations throughout the nation’s most historic square mile—Independence National Historical Park and Historic Philadelphia, including Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, and the National Constitution Center. The festival begins with a 13-Star flag raising ceremony at the Betsy Ross House, 239 Arch Street, at 9 a.m. Then, at 10 a.m., the 50-Star flag will be raised on the Constitution Center’s front lawn, 525 Arch Street, followed by a patriotic parade of troops – past and present – to Independence Hall. CBS 3’s Jessica Dean will emcee a special ceremony during which proclamations will be read for both the American flag and the U.S. Army. Future soldiers will take the oath of enlistment, and a keynote address will be made by Under Secretary of the U.S. Army Brad Carson. Throughout the day, families can stop by a Stripes and Stars Community Fair on Independence Mall, where organizations including Fort Mifflin on the Delaware and the Pennsylvania National Guard will have special activities at tables for children and families. Daylong activities at the Betsy Ross House include carnival games and courtyard performances by the Give & Take Jugglers, Bag Lady Theater, the Mummers’ String Band Connection, and the Funicular Aerial Circus. At 1:30 p.m., 13 new Americans will take the oath of allegiance during a naturalization ceremony. At the National Constitution Center, guests can view the new “The Flag: A History” exhibition, which features different flags from the Philadelphia Flag Day Association’s collection of historic American flags and banners. The museum’s Stripes and Stars Festival programming includes craft activities and flag etiquette workshops. At 4 p.m. on the Constitution Center front lawn, at the Historic Philadelphia Center, and at the Betsy Ross House, everyone is invited to join the chorus for a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, hosted by the Philadelphia Historical Society. This performance is part of the national “Raise it Up! Anthem for America” initiative in honor of the national anthem’s 200th anniversary, organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. At 5:15 p.m., festival participants can join in a flag folding demonstration in front of Independence Hall using the MLS’ Philadelphia Union’s giant ceremonial flag, which is used for on field presentations. The festival concludes with a patriotic performance by the U.S. Army Brass Quintet in front of Independence Hall at 5:30 p.m. Most Stripes and Stars Festival programs are free to attend. The National Constitution Center is offering discounted $5 museum admission on June 14, courtesy of The Macy’s Foundation, as part of a series of Macy’s Family Days. Admission to Betsy Ross House also is $5. For a full schedule of events and event locations, visit www.constitutioncenter.org/ stripesandstars. Twitter: @StripesStarsPHL. Facebook: facebook.com/StripesStarsPHL. Instagram: @StripesStarsPHL. Featured Stripes and Stars partner organizations include: Philadelphia Flag Day Association, William Penn Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), City of Philadelphia, Historic Philadelphia, Inc., National Constitution Center, Independence National Historical Park, Fort Mifflin, Independence Visitor Center, Pennsylvania National Guard, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution (Philadelphia Continental Chapter), Thank-A-Vet, Veterans Multi-Service Center, Red Cross, 3rd United States Colored Troops, Army Corps of Engineers, and Veteran Guard 3rd Regiment Infantry N.G.P. In the week leading up to the festival, the Betsy Ross House will celebrate National Flag Week with ceremonies, events, and other family-friendly activities as part of Flag Fest 2014. Events begin on Sunday, June 8 and run through Saturday, June 14, 2014. For information, visit http://historicphiladelphia.org/betsy-ross-house/what-to-see/.

The Joseph Levine Family was honored with the Award for Community Service at Martins Run’s 12th Annual Leadership Award Celebration on May 15, 2014. very year for the past 12 years the Leadership Award Celebration (LAC) at Martins Run has raised people’s spirits while raising funds to benefit seniors in need of financial assistance. On May 15, the gala event surpassed $100,000 in donations – more than any of the previous years’ amounts. The proceeds will benefit the Martins Run Resident Assistance Fund, which subsidizes the care of residents who, through no fault of their own, have become unable to pay their monthly bills, typically because they have outlived their savings. Emceed by CBS 3’s Pat Ciarrocchi, this year’s Leadership Award Celebration honored the Joseph Levine Family, who received the Community Service Award for generously supporting Martins Run and other local nonprofits for many years. The Leadership Award was presented to Elliot Rosen, who served for 12 years on Martins Run’s Board of Trustees and has held numerous positions of leadership in the community. The LAC’s 185 attendees (a record number) enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts while mingling in the main courtyard to listen to a musical performance by the Bobby Block Trio. Live and Silent Auctions gave everyone the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of popular items ranging from gift certificates for local restaurants, museums, and other attractions to a weeklong vacation at a Long Beach Island beach house and other memorable experiences. Raffle tickets were sold throughout the event, and one lucky winner received the coveted door prize, a Chocolate Lover’s Package of goodies courtesy of Acme Markets. “In the past year alone, our Resident Assistance Fund has provided financial assistance of more than $135,000, so the $107,000 raised from this event is greatly needed,” said Linda Sterthous, CEO of Martins Run. “Since the inception of Martins Run in 1980, we have never asked any resident to leave because they were unable to pay. That’s a comforting fact.” For information about Martins Run, visit www.martinsrun.org or call 610-353-7660.

he world premiere of composer-in-residence Peter Nocella’s “Quartet No.4 – Winter Journal” will be performed by the Meiravi Quartet June 8 at the Academy of Vocal Arts. Also performing with the quartet, Wynnewood resident Peter Nocella is a prominent Philadelphia musician and composer. Nocella has composed for and performed with the Pennsylvania Ballet Company, Baryshnikov and the American Ballet Theatre, and several other ballet companies both nationally and internationally. For several years he also wrote for and conducted the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. For this concert the Meiravi Quartet glimpses into spring with Nocella’s post-modern romantic “String Quartet No. 4 – Winter Journal,” as well as Prokofiev’s post-romantic “String Quartet No. 1” and Shostakovich’s vernal tribute, the captivatingly simple “String Quartet No. 1.” Nocella’s “String Quartet No. Meiravi Quartet, from left – Meiravi Quartet’s composer-in4” carries the listener musiresidence Peter Nocella, viola; Gregory Teperman, violin; cally through a bustling city Igor Szwec, violin; and cellist, Vivian Barton Dozor. The winter and into a romantic Meiravi Quartet presents a “Prelude to Summer” concert primavera of the many posSunday, June 8, at 3 p.m. at the Academy of Vocal Arts. sibilities spring conjures—blossoming flowers, welcoming warmth of the sun, love, and rejuvenation. Prokofiev’s “String Quartet No. 1,” first performed in Washington DC in1931, reflects the more romantic era in Russia, especially in its distinctive finale, highly intense in emotion and full of sweeping melodies. Dmitri Shostakovich’s “String Quartet No. 1” is both wistful and ironic. This work, coincides with the joyous birth of his son, Maxim in the spring of 1938. It both dances like a carefree firefly, and mirrors the war and politics of the twentieth century. This work, simultaneously and somewhat subversively, is a vehicle for his private thoughts of a repressive Russian regime. Dr. Nocella, born, raised, and musically trained in Philadelphia, has enjoyed a broad based career in the Philadelphia area. Commissioned by the Philadelphia Concerto Soloists, now the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, he composed and conducted “Olympiad XX,” based on the tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics. He has also performed with a myriad of other groups and artists including the Philly Pops, Luciano Pavarotti, Roberta Peters, Robert Merrill, Joan Sutherland, Richard Tucker, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Frank Sinatra, Burt Bacharach, Smokey Robinson, and Johnny Mathis. The Meiravi Quartet concert will be held June 8 at the Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce Street, 3 p.m. Reception to follow. Tickets: Adults, $22, Seniors, $15, Students, $5.
