Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. is based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, one of the most famous books written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Published under his pen name Lewis Carroll in 1865, the book was met with great commercial success. In 1898, Alice had become the most popular children’s book in England. By 1932, it became one of the most popular in the world. This led to adaptations including Broadway productions (1915, 1931, 1932), comic books, works of art, television series and films. Walt Disney produced one of the most successful adaptions, an animated feature film. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Score. Many of the songs in the film are heard in Alice in Wonderland Jr. Ashley Kerns returns to WST for Kids to direct, following last season’s production of Seussical Jr. A South Philadelphia resident, she has been Assistant Director for Walnut Mainstage productions, including Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, Agatha Christie’s The MouseSee Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland Jr.” on page 5

Musician, Artist, and Monologist Puts His Life on Stage Philly Fringe Festival in Solo Show: “The Story of You” usician and monologist Brian Kelly brings his one-man show to the Philly Fringe Festival and is teaming up with Kensington resident and bassist Irman Peck to paint a selfportrait of his life through words and sound in seven parts: from life on oil rigs to working in the thick of New York’s art scene. Set against a back drop of richly designed sound and live music, “The Story of You” – a one-night only event – marks Kelly’s first performance in the Philly Fringe Festival and will take place at Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Avenue, on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 8 p.m. Tickets: $15 (general admission); $10 (students). Buy at the door or online via the FringeArts Box Office: www.fringearts.com/event/thestory-of-you/. A work of improvisation and constant revision, “The Story of You” features live bass playing by Peck in conjunction with sound designed by Jun Mizumachi. The show’s soundscape serves as a trigger and amplifying force for Kelly’s memory and emotion as he recreates moments from his life: a fatherless childhood, finding work on an offshore oil-rig, a night spent in a Paris hotel room with Jean Michel Basquiat, playing CBGB, and the peril of young love in New York City. “I’m always been very aware of how people present and perform their lives – auctioneers, actors, disc jockeys, and really everyone, and once I fell apart, emotionally, I started looking at the ways performance had helped me through some of the more difficult times in my life,” Kelly says of the Brian Kelly performing a monologue from “The Story of show’s genesis. “Performing these scenes from my past changes You,” 2014. Photo/Vladimir Weinstein them from narrative to experience, and for me, the experience is a connection with the audience and with myself.” Earlier versions of the show have been performed at Brown University and at HB Theater in New York City, and Edith Meeks, Executive Director of HB Theater, describes the show as “eerie, tense, wry, unsentimental and alive with restless energy.” For information on Brian Kelly and to preview “The Story of You,” visit www.briankellymusic.com/monologues.

Trusting my intuition, I can let go of the ‘work of art.’ The painting is just a place to free myself—to surrender to process. Clarity is distilled out of movement and change. The paintings are the record I leave behind of my journey into spirit. They are in gratitude for my life.” The artist takes her inspiration where she finds it: “If I’m there with the water, I’m observing, being part of the landscape. If I’m in my studio, the inspiration's coming from another place.” She has had many solo exhibits and joined in numerous group exhibits throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and New England. In addition to the Red Gate Studio in Beijing, she has been artist-in residence at the Nantucket Island School of Design, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. Tuten earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For weekend and extended hours, and other information, telephone the Art Gallery at 610-519-4612. Selected works for the Gerry Tuten exhibit may be previewed on the gallery’s website at www.artgallery.villanova.edu. Additional works may be found at www.gerrytuten.com.

VoxAmaDeus Opens Its 28th Musical Performance Season “Keyed on Bach & Mozart” Concert Sunday, September 14, at 6 p.m. alentin Radu, the founder and artistic director of VoxAmaDeus, will launch his musical organization’s twentyeighth season of memorable music-making when the Camerata Ama Deus Baroque period-instrument chamber orchestra performs compositions by two of the world’s most popular composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The concert will be performed on Sunday, September 14, at 6 p.m., and will be presented in the acoustically glorious Daylesford Abbey at 220 South Valley Road in Paoli, PA 19301. (Daylesford Abbey is located about one Camerata Ama Deus of VoxAmaDeus presents “Keyed on Bach & Mozart” Concert Sunday, mile south of the Paoli SEPTA/ September 14, at 6 p.m. Photo/Alexander Iziliaev Amtrak Station at the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and Valley Road.) Maestro Radu, conducting from the piano, will be the soloist in two contrasting and brilliant keyboard works. From the genius of J.S. Bach, he will perform the Piano Concerto No. 5 in f minor, BWV 1056, a work that was originally written for the harpsichord. The Bach will be paired with Mozart’s effervescent Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor, K. 466. VoxAmaDeus is proud to note that Maestro Radu will perform upon the world-renowned Bösendorfer 225 Grand Piano. By a special arrangement with Cunningham Pianos of Philadelphia, Bösendorfer pianos exclusively will grace the VoxAmaDeus stage throughout the 20142015 musical season. The two other compositions on the program will showcase the artistic and interpretative talents of two stalwart and popular members of the Camerata Ama Deus chamber orchestra. VoxAmaDeus’ virtuoso concertmaster, Thomas DiSarlo, will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219. Probably composed in 1775, this was Mozart’s last concerto written for the solo violin. Curiously, September 14 will be the first time the wonderful Violin Concerto No. 5 has been performed by Featuring David and Adrian Mowry on guitars and vocals with the forces of VoxAmaDeus. Bill Zinno on bass and Jeff Sheard on drums. However, no stranger to Vox concerts is Bach’s Orchestral Beaucoup Blue performs the first Wed. of each month at L’ETAGE Suite No. 2 in b minor, BWV 1067. 93-Year-Old Neal Aaron Swims 150 Miles…and Counting Pool workouts are a year round activity for the Martins Run resident ver since the heated, indoor pool at Martins Run opened four years ago, Neal Aaron has been swimming laps practically every morning. All year long, regardless of the weather outdoors, the 93-year-old resident of Martins Run starts his day swimming 20 laps continuously in the 55-meter pool – alternating between freestyle and backstroke. By now, Aaron has swum 150 miles, which is the distance between the Media-based senior living community and Ocean City, Maryland, with 10 miles to spare. And he has no plans to stop or slow down. In fact, he recently competed in Delaware County’s Senior Games swim tournament held at Upper Darby High School. He and fellow Martins Run resident Faye Rothstein won silver medals in swim meets for their individual age groups. “I feel like I’m accomplishing something,” said Aaron of his pool workouts. “And my cardiologist is so impressed with my health that he says he’s going to get me to triple digits

[100 years old]. I told him to put it in writing!” A Martins Run resident for the past nine years, Aaron hadn’t swam in a pool since he served in World War II as part of a medical battalion. “The medical officer found places for our team to swim,” explained Aaron. “I am probably the only G.I. who got to swim at the Malacanan Palace in the Philippines.” The palace is the official residence and workplace of the president of the Philippines. “Science on the Hill” Encourages Conversations on Topical Science cience cafés bring scientific knowledge out of research labs and lecture halls and into neighborhood venues. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) recently awarded a three-year, $6,000 grant to fund “Science on the Hill,” Saint Joseph’s version of the brainy but breezy community gathering. “Science cafés welcome everyone, especially those who are interested in the topic but who may not typically have the chance to get involved in discussions,” says Edwin Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology. “We are grateful to the ASBMB for giving us the opportunity to engage with our Wynnefield, Overbrook and Bala Cynwyd neighbors in these lively conversations.” Program Manager Caitlin Fritz says that a successful science café creates an informal atmosphere where all participants feel encouraged to participate.

Devon Prep Students Collect School Supplies for Needy Families

s the summer comes to an end school age children throughout the Delaware Valley are getting their school supplies in order. For families in North Philadelphia getting the necessary school supplies was made a little easier with help from Devon Preparatory School’s Christian Action Program (CAP). Throughout the summer CAP collected nearly 3000 items from Devon Prep families for St. Elizabeth’s Community Center in North Philadelphia. Among the items were notebooks, calculators, pencils, crayons, pens, folders, backpacks, copybooks, erasers, index cards and just about anything else needed to start school. Kramer of Chester Springs and Co-Vice Presidents Eddie McGinley of Villanova and Keane White of West Chester. The supplies were then distributed to school age children during St. Elizabeth’s annual Community Block Party. Families in a 20 block radius from the Center have been invited and will receive the supplies. Devon Prep’s Christian Action Program (CAP) is a student-run organization dedicated to improving the surrounding community through ongoing acts of service. One of the most active programs at Devon Prep, CAP consists of students from grades six to twelve. The club serves several purposes; while attending to the spiritual and physical needs of those in the area, it also offers students a unique opportunity to take roles of responsibility and use their skills to accomplish meaningful work. In addition to the School Supplies Drive CAP also sponsors a Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit St. Elizabeth’s Community Center, a lock-in event to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a Blood Drive in partnership with Continued from page 11 “These cafés are not long-winded lectures with a passive the American Red Cross, several Clothing Drives, and a Giving Tree at Christmas time. audience listening to an expert,” says Fritz. “They are dynamFor info, call 610-688-7337, email admissions@devonprep.com or visitwww.devonprep.com. ic, two-way interactions between a scientist and an audience in which the participants feel empowered to learn and contribute insights, and the speaker gains valuable perspective on his or her work.” Launched in July, “Science on the Hill” is held periodically at 6 p.m. at Landmark Americana Tap and Grill, located at Monday, September 22, 6 - 7:15 p.m.: Sign Language with redyffrin Public Library will host Parent-Child Workshops 2481 54th Street on Saint Joseph’s campus.
