“The Trial of Jack the Ripper” September 26 at Neumann U. effrey Mudgett believes that his great-great-great grandfather was Jack the Ripper. If his theory is correct, the infamous London serial killer was executed in Philadelphia and is buried in Yeadon. Mudgett will present his case, “The Trial of Jack the Ripper,” at Neumann University on Friday, September 26, at 3 p.m. in the Fred P. Meagher Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. An author and attorney, Mudgett will swear in the audience as a jury for his presentation, unconcerned with besmirching the reputation of his ancestor, Dr. H.H. Holmes, who was hanged at Eastern State Penitentiary in 1896 for killing 27 people in his Chicago hotel.

J

Author Jeffrey Mudgett believes that his great-great-great grandfather Dr. H.H. Holmes (shown) was Jack the Ripper. If his theory is true, the infamous killer was executed in Philadelphia and is buried in Yeadon. The September 26 program is free and open to the public. The audience will act as a jury and deliver a verdict at the end of the program. The killing spree of Dr. Holmes was the subject of Erik Larson’s best-selling 2003 book, “The Devil in the White City.” The 60-room boarding house run by Holmes was constructed to allow the proprietor easy access to his victims, whose bodies were disposed of in a basement kiln or sold to medical schools. Mudgett’s research into the atrocities committed by his ancestor led him to conclude that Dr. Holmes and Jack the Ripper are the same man. The collection of forensic and circumstantial evidence is the content of “The Trial of Jack the Ripper” and of Mudgett’s book, Bloodstains. The audience will serve as jury for Mudgett’s presentation and will deliver a verdict at the conclusion of the Trial. The program is co-sponsored by the University Office of Academic Affairs, the Division of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Criminal Justice. For information, call 610-558-5507.

Several fossils from the massive plant-eater will be on view at the Science Live area throughout the day. Visitors will be able to touch real fossils, do experiments, and more to learn about sauropods, titanosaurs and how paleontologists find fossils. Dreadnoughtus Day is free with regular museum admission. On Saturday, Sept. 20, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dreadnoughtus schrani is the most complete skeleton of its type ever found. At 85 feet long and weighing about 65 tons in life, the dinosaur is the largest land animal for which a body mass can be accurately calculated. Its skeleton is exceptionally complete, with over 70 percent of the bones, excluding the head, represented. ing the hidden rules by which new viruses evolve and spread. To do so, they’re exploring the networks of connections that join human societies together and also link our species to other animals with which we share the planet—and with which we can share diseases. On October 16, eight prominent scientists will discuss cutting-edge work investigating how microbes not only cause disease, but also how “good bugs” promote health. Speakers include: • Janelle Ayres, PhD, Nomis Foundation Laboratories, Salk Institute for Biological Studies. • Yasmine Belkaid, PhD, Chief, Mucosal Immunology Section, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. • Claire Fraser, PhD, Director, Institute for Genome Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine. • Jack Gilbert, PhD, Department of Ecology & Evolution, University of Chicago. • Sergio Lira, MD, PhD, Director, Immunology Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. • Martin F. Polz, PhD, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. • John Rawls, PhD, Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology, Duke University Medical Center. • Ramnik Xavier, MD, PhD, Director, Center for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Massachusetts General Hospital. This event is made possible in part by the Provost Interdisciplinary Seminar Fund Award and exemplifies the One Health Initiative, which is dedicated to improving the lives of all species through the integration of human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental science. The symposium is spearheaded by Penn Vet’s Center for Host-Microbial Interactions. The Center funded five pilot projects last year to explore the intersection of microbes and disease in order to benefit both animal and human health. The second round of funded projects will be announced next month. For information, visit www.vet.upenn.edu/chmi. About Penn Vet Penn Vet is a global leader in veterinary medicine education, research, and clinical care. Founded in 1884, Penn Vet is the only veterinary school developed in association with a medical school. The school is a proud member of the One Health Initiative, linking human, animal, and environmental health. Penn Vet serves a diverse population of animals at its two campuses, which include extensive diagnostic and research laboratories. Ryan Hospital in Philadelphia provides care for dogs, cats, and other domestic/companion animals, handling more than 31,000 patient visits a year. New Bolton Center, Penn Vet’s large-animal hospital on nearly 700 acres in rural Kennett Square, PA, cares for horses and livestock/farm animals. The hospital handles more than 4,000 patient visits a year, while the Field Service treats nearly 36,000 patients at local farms. In addition, New Bolton Center’s campus includes a swine center, working dairy, and poultry unit that provide valuable research for the agriculture industry. “Farragut North” Heads Season Lineup at The Stagecrafters he Stagecrafters theater in Chestnut Hill opens its 20142015 season with a special preview performance on Thursday, September 18 of Beau Willimon’s juicy fast-paced political drama, “Farragut North,” which runs for three weekends. An incisively sardonic tale about the behind-the-scenes machinations taking place in a tight presidential primary race on the campaign trail in Iowa, the play follows the career trajectory of one Stephen Bellamy, press secretary to the front runner candidate. Loosely based on the author’s experience in the national political arena, its thriller-like plot draws one into a world where the lust for power and outsized egos mandate that winning be the one and only name of the game. Beauregard (‘Beau’) Willimon (b. 1975) pursued his early drama schooling at Julliard’s American Playwright’s Program. After receiving several awards for plays written, he penned “Farragut North” in 2008 (the title refers to the Washington Metro stop closest to many of the Capital’s lobbying and political consulting firms). Late that year it premiered to sold-out houses at the Atlantic Theater Company in Manhattan and then transferred to Los Angeles’ Geffen Play house for an extended run in 2009. Willimon also turned “Farragut North” into an Oscar-nominated screenplay for the film, “The Ides of March,” directed by George Clooney and released in 2011. In 2012 Willimon developed the Netflix series, “House of Cards,” also a political drama on the craving for power and the lengths to which one may go to achieve it. Performance dates are September 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, Oct. 2, 3, 4 at 8 p.m., September 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at $17 Online (no service charge), $20 At-door. (Thursday eve performances 2-for-$25 Online, 2-for-$30 Atdoor). Students with valid ID $13 At-door. Groups of 15 or more are offered a reduced rate of $15.00 a ticket, paid in advance. The event will be recorded for broadcast on WPVITV/6abc. The ceremony will take place at the National Constitution Center on Independence Mall in Historic Philadelphia and will be recorded for broadcast on WPVI-TV/6abc. The National Constitution Center will award the prestigious Liberty Medal to 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai for her continued demonstration of courage and resilience in the face of adversity and for serving as a powerful voice for those who have been denied their basic human rights and liberties. Malala Yousafzai came to international attention at the age of 11 by writing for the BBC about life under the Taliban in her native Pakistan. Using the pen name Gul Makai, she often spoke about her family’s fight for girls’ education in her community. For her outspokenness, Ms. Yousafzai received Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize in 2011 and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize in the same year. In October 2012, Ms. Yousafzai was the target of an assas-

T

sination plot by the Taliban and shot in the head as she was returning from school on a bus. She miraculously survived and, undeterred by the continued threats to her life and the life of her family, continued to campaign for education. Following her attack, Gordon Brown, the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, launched the Malala Petition to demand the United Nations to recommit to Millennium Development Goal 2, which involves universal primary education for children around the world by the end of 2015. The petition, which received more than three million signatures, also helped Pakistan ratify the country’s first Right to Education bill. Ms. Yousafzai is the youngest person ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and was one of four runners-up for Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2013. Addressing the United Nations on her 16th birthday, Ms. Yousafzai told the audience that “one child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” She was awarded the 2013 United Nations Human Rights Prize, which is given every five years and has previously been bestowed on such notable recipients as Nelson Mandela, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She continues to champion universal access to education through the Malala Fund (malalafund.org), a nonprofit organization that empowers girls through education to achieve their potential and change their communities. Her memoir, “I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban,” is a New York Times bestseller. A young readers’ version, “I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World,” was released in August 2014. The Liberty Medal was established in 1988 to commemorate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. Given annually, the medal honors men and women of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe. For more information, visit www.constititutioncenter.org/libertymedal.
