11th Hour Theatre Company Stages Reading of the Cy Coleman Musical “The Life”

Learn how art history progresses as the art pendulum swung throughout the 19th century during “The Road To and Through Impressionism” on Tuesday, September 30, 7 - 9 p.m. at Tredyffrin Public Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford. Fred Dixon and his wife Martha began to collect art more than 35 years ago. Their home in Chadds Ford has become a mini-museum with roughly 130 paintings and pieces by artists from 25 countries. They’ve traveled to major museums in the U.S. and Europe and to the great cathedrals in Italy to view Renaissance and Baroque art. Fred and Martha were docents at the Barnes for ten years. All of this background culminated in the publication of “700 Years of Art History: Pre-Renaissance to Modernism.”

A Successful Trial According to Mr. Goodchild, “Our store set out with two goals. First, we wanted to offer the Narberth community a new alternative to the big-box stores that threaten our nation’s retail backbone. And second, we wanted to learn whether our titles would sell in a retail location, in addition to the web. The answer has been a resounding ‘yes.’ We are delighted with the level of interest and sales, and grateful to the Narberth community for its warm reception.” To build on the store’s success, Mr. Goodchild plans to offer more titles, new displays, and larger-format books in the weeks ahead. Germantown White House to Open for One Day

he house where General George Washington and British General William Howe stayed – at different times – will be open for the Revolutionary Germantown Festival, October 4, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site is otherwise closed to visitors in the fall and winter. The Germantown White House was used as a residence by President George Washington. But years before that, the Battle of Germantown raged along Germantown Avenue in October 1777, with fighting right across the street from the Germantown White House. Despite the determined efforts of the Americans, they lost and were forced to retreat to Valley Forge. Meanwhile the victorious British General William Howe occupied the house. October 4 is the only open day the house will be open to visitors this fall. The elegant 18th century house and exhibits recall the time when President Washington held cabinet meetings there in November 1793. He was again concerned with war, this time between France and Great Britain. Admission to this Independence National Historical Park site at 5442 Germantown Avenue is free. Visitors are welcome to see the exhibits and take a guided tour of the historic house. Modern restrooms are available. The first 100 families will be given a special souvenir.

rom man’s first sketches on the cave wall, to the rise of the “selfie,” the portrait has been an ever-present subject matter for artists. The power of the portrait to tell a story, illuminate social injustices, or capture a moment in time lies in the pictorial representation as well as the media and process by which it was made. In “Face Value,” presented at Main Line Art Center October 6 to November 5, artists Nick Cassway, Mark Khaisman, and Steven Earl Weber uniquely approach portraiture and social commentary through the manipulation of packaging tape, computer cut stencils, and printed glass. Referencing film noir, Khaisman will be exhibiting his signature lightboxes as well as site specific tape works directly on windows in the gallery. Cassway will be exhibiting a new series based on a civil war drama created with his analog-to-digital-to-analog process that incorporates drawings edited together in Photoshop and output to computer cut stencils with house paint and metal leaf. Influenced by early photographic processes and his immediate surroundings, Steven Earl Weber’s new work will be seen as shadows reflected on surfaces from mirrors and panes of glass to illicit empathy and identification with his subjects. All three artists look to the past for inspiration and embrace new technologies in production to create compelling and surprising work that is both timely and timeless. “Face Value” is curated by Amie Potsic, Executive Director of Main Line Art Center, and is presented in partnership with Pentimenti Gallery, of Old City Philadelphia, as part of the DesignPhiladelphia Festival. The Art Center will host an artist talk on Friday, October 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a public reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. featuring fare from Cricket Catering and samplings from the center’s wine sponsor, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. The artist talk, reception and gallery visits are free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional programs for “Face Value” include a Screenprinting on Non-Traditional Surfaces workshop with Steven Earl Weber on Wednesday, October 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Analog to Digital to Analog Drawings workshop with Nick Cassway on Wednesday, October 22 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; and a workshop on Painting with Packing Tape with Mark Khaisman on Wednesday, November 5 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. For information about these programs and “Face Value,” visit www.mainlinert.org or call 610-525-0272.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NEWS Devon Prep Opens School Year New Faculty, New Middle School Science Curriculum and Largest Freshman Class in Decades evon Prep opened the 2014 school year with one of the largest freshman classes in school history, four new teachers, a new middle school science curriculum, and two significant trophies to put on display. Sixty-six ninth graders, hailing from Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties, make up Devon Prep’s Class of 2018, one of the largest classes in recent history. Nearly 60% of the freshmen are new to Devon Prep, having attended public, parochial, and private middle schools last year. Devon Prep also welcomed four new faculty members on the first day of school. They are: Mrs. Elizabeth Mendoza, of Chalfont, who will Computer Science classes as well as serve Devon Prep welcomed four new faculty members for the as Technology Director. Mendoza holds a Bachelor of Science 2014-15 school year. They are, standing, Mr. George Sheehan (left), and Rev. Francisco Aisa, Sch. P.; and seated, Degree in Computer Science Mrs. Beth Mendoza (left) and Mrs. Tara McKenna. from Adelphi University and has more than ten years of experience working with e-commerce companies, start-up entrepreneurs and community organizations. Mr. George Sheehan, of Collegeville, is Devon Prep’s new upper school English teacher. He comes to Devon Prep after 11 years at New Hope Academy where he was a teacher, Department Chair and Dean of Students. Sheehan holds a BA and a JD from Villanova University. Mrs. Tara McKenna, of Levittown, is Devon Prep’s new upper school Math and Physics teacher. McKenna comes to Devon Prep after ten years at Sterling East, a private Christian school, where she served as a math and science teacher as well as head of the Mathematics Department. McKenna holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Villanova University. Rev. Francisco Aisa, Sch.P., of Devon, was appointed Devon Prep’s school chaplain last year. This year he will continue as chaplain and teach religion as well. A native of Zaragoza, Spain, Rev. Aisa holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Theology and most recently served at Christopher Columbus University of Veracruz. In addition to adding new faculty, Devon Prep will also Devon Prep Seventh Grader Colin Fulmer and his 11th grade be phasing in a new Middle Brother Sean arrived together on the first day of school. School science curriculum Colin is the last of five brothers to attend Devon Prep. beginning with the 2014-15 academic year to be completed in the 2016 -17 academic year. The new curriculum will bring Life Science to the sixth grade, Physical Science 1 with a concentration on physics to the seventh grade and a second year of Physical Science with a concentration on chemistry to the eighth grade. “One of the main reasons we are making this change is developmental appropriateness, explained Mr. Roger Mecouch, chair of Devon Prep’s Science Department. “Most of the time what students get in a middle school is a general science that touches on a lot of things like ecology and introductory chemistry. We didn’t necessarily want to do it that way, he continued, “and seeing a need to expand the introductory physics and chemistry so students would be better prepared for high school, we decided to move Life Science to the 6th grade. It is appropriate developmentally. “With Physical Science 1 and 2 our seventh and eighth graders will be learning fundamental physics and chemistry, Mecouch said. “The chemistry taught in 8th grade is certainly not equivalent to what you would teach an 11th or 12th grader but it will lay some of the foundation needed for future success. Finally the success of two upper school school teams was acknowledged by Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. at Devon Prep’s Opening Day assembly when he congratulated the Varsity Baseball Team and the Solar Car Team on their significant wins during the summer. The Baseball team won the PIAA Class A State Championship for the first time in the history of the school, and the Solar Car Team earned a Third Place trophy in the national Solar Car Challenge competing against 12 high school teams from around the country. Devon Prep is a private Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six through 12 conducted by the Piarist Fathers and located on the Main Line. Devon Prep will hold an Open House on Sunday, October 12 from 1 - 4 p.m. Scholarship/Entrance Exams are scheduled for Sunday, October 19 and Saturday, October 25 beginning at 8:30 a.m. For info, call 610-688-7337, visit www.devoonprep.com or email admissions@devonprep.com.

Martins Run Gets Set for the Fifth Annual Intergenerational 5K to Raise Money for Dementia Care The fundraising event continues to grow, thanks to residents of the Media-based senior living community ore than 250 runners are expected to participate in the Intergenerational 5K to Defeat Dementia organized by Martins Run Senior Living Community. The event, now in its fifth year, is slated for Sunday, October 5 at Ridley Creek State Park – Area 17 (351 Gradyville Road) in Newtown Square. Special guests include Chris O’Connell of FOX29 News as honorary race chair, and the Phillie Phanatic, the official mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Fifth Annual Intergenerational 5K to Defeat Dementia consists of a 5K Run and 1Mile Fun Walk as well as Kids’ Races and Senior Stroll. RafMartins Run’s Fifth Annual Intergenerational 5K Run is slated for Sunday, October 5 at fle prizes and cash awards will Ridley Creek State Park (Area 17) in Newtown Square. Everyone is welcome to participate. also be provided. Anyone from On-site registration opens at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. age three to 103 may register. Also, the public is welcome to come out and support the runners while enjoying food, music by DJ Bob Burke, games, and giveaways from local merchants throughout the morning. Additional entertainment, including magician, Dan Zimmerman, will also be part of the festivities. The fundraiser, which has collected $136,000+ in donations so far, was started by Martins Run resident Ethel Hamburger. In 2010, Hamburger recruited other residents, along with family members and Martins Run board members, to form a 5K planning committee. The race is one of many events intended to help raise money for dementia programming and for the eventual construction of a dementia unit at the non-profit senior living community. A dementia unit would provide specialized services and a comfortable residence for older adults experiencing memory loss due to dementia. “We are gratified that the community at large – in Media and neighboring areas – have supported our efforts and become actively involved, whether by participating in the 5K or making a donation,” said Linda Sterthous, CEO of Martins Run. “This is a cause that everyone can get behind, because most people have known a family member or close friend who has been affected by dementia.” On-site registration for the race opens at 8:00 a.m. Kids’ races will start at 8:45 a.m. followed by the main event 5K at 9 a.m. All morning, attendees may enjoy food, free giveaways, music, games and other entertainment, as well as a special appearance by the Phillie Phanatic from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Cash awards will be presented to overall male and female finishers. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in six different age groups, from 19 and under to 60+. Runners from all over Media and the surrounding communities have already signed up to participate, and anyone is welcome to register. For those who are unable to attend the event, grab a bite at UNO on West Chester Pike on October 5, and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the race. Simply present your UNO voucher with purchase, or mention Martins Run’s 5K to receive one! Vouchers can also be printed from the 2014 5K Run pageon the Martins Run website. Also, contributions and pledges can be made to Martins Run on behalf of a resident or runner. For additional information on the race, contact Rich Pezick at 610-353-7660 ext. 253 or visit http://martins-run.donorpages.com/5KRun2014 or www.runtheday.com.

Cristo Rey High School students pose for a picture with their new bosses from Main Line Health, System Director Jean Kozicki, Shawn Hampden, and Lauren High. number of local companies, including AmerisourceBergen, Liberty Property Trust, Haverford Trust, Main Line Health, VWR, and Essent Guaranty, Inc., recently took part in an NFL-Style Signing Day at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School, showing their support of the school and announcing their work-study students for the school year. On August 27, 350 students and leaders from more than 60 area businesses gathered for a “job draft” event called Signing Day. The event, formatted like the NFL draft, featured business leaders, presenting company-branded apparel to each of the selected student workers as they announce their names to cheers from the crowd. Now in its third year in Philadelphia, Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School, a co-ed college prep school for grades 9-12, welcomes its third freshman class of 140 students this week. The school is a much-admired, national model for Catholic, college prep education that serves low-income, highly motivated students of all faiths and is successfully operating 28 schools nationwide. Central to Cristo Rey’s success is the model’s Work-Study Program, in which students work one day per week in mentored, entry-level positions in professional settings. Local businesses and organizations, such as those listed above, hire students to do real work for real wages, which offsets the majority of the cost of each student’s education. Each job provided by a company employs four students for the year. This year’s event was a lively celebration with leaders from 60 area companies showing their support for education in VWR Representative Maggie Lester takes a photo with her Philadelphia and for the unique new work study students Austin B., Jaide H., Tafari R., work-study model at Cristo Rey and Assamaou G. Philadelphia High School.
