For the sixth time Munich Airport has again been voted Europe’s best airport at the Skytrax World Airport Awards, an international survey of more than eleven million passengers. At more than 240 airports worldwide, passengers were asked to evaluate 39 different aspects concerning airport facilities and service qualities, ranging from the ease of catching flights to the efficiency of security checks up to the cleanliness of restrooms. In worldwide rankings Munich Airport came in fourth place. Moreover it has been chosen second best airport in the category Leisure Amenities.

Terminal 1 (T1)

Terminal 1, München Airport Center

Terminal 1 was opened in 1992 and hosts all non-Star Alliance airlines. Each of the 5 modules (A-E) has its own arrivals and departures areas. With very short distances, Terminal 1 is tailor-made for the needs of point-to-point traffic.

The Service Center in Terminal 1, MAC provides the following services for passengers: ✈ luggage storage ✈ coat check service ✈ deposit for third parties ✈ lost and found

Terminal 2 (T2) Terminal 2, which was completed in 2003, is a joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa German Airlines and the world’s first airport terminal to be jointly planned, financed and operated by an airport and an airline. It has become one of Europe’s fastest and most efficient terminals and is specifically tailored for the needs of connecting passengers.

By 2015 a new satellite terminal will go into operation offering space for another 11 million passengers a year. The new facility will be linked to Terminal 2 via a fast underground passenger transportation system. Passengers arriving or departing through it will continue using the check-in, ticket counters and the arrivals area in Terminal 2.

Luxurious materials, warm colors and attractive seating arrangements make passengers feel welcome. The TV zones let passengers choose between information and entertainment. For hotel information and reservations, visit the Main Information Desk located in the München Airport Center (MAC). Many hotels in the area offer direct shuttle services to and from the airport (see pages 34/35).

According to the motto “service nonstop”, passengers have a new way of obtaining quick and detailed information at Munich Airport. The new InfoGates aim to assist passengers in navigating around the airport and provide quick and detailed information regarding shopping, food & beverages and other services for travelers. The InfoGate-counters and Interactive-displays which are positioned at key locations throughout the terminal, help passengers find their way quickly. Airport staff are available via video conferencing to answer questions and map out airport directions which can be printed. The quickest way to your chosen destination will be displayed on a map of the airport including distances, and the estimated walking and anticipated waiting time at passport control and security screening will also be computed.

Internet Access

This Munich Airport service tailored for departing and arriving international passengers and groups is available in 20 languages. It includes meet and greet services, guidance through customs, passport and security control, as well as escorts to departure gates, lounges and transfer buses. Please note that bookings must be made 48 hours or more in advance.

Wired Internet Access is available in lounges, in both service centers as well as in conference and meeting locations. Wireless-LAN is available at all gates, in all lounges, the München Airport Center (MAC), municon Conference Center and Kempinski Hotel Airport München. Whenever starting your notebook or PDA in a hotspot designated area, it is automatically directed to the start-up page of T-Mobile where the current access charges apply.

München Airport Center (MAC) The München Airport Center (MAC) is Europe’s largest outdoor covered venue located right between Terminals 1 and 2. In addition to showrooms, conference facilities, office services and a medical center, it offers restaurants, cafés and shops. Throughout the year, the MAC hosts a variety of extraordinary events like beach-volleyball tournaments in summer or the famous Christmas Market in winter for both passengers and visitors alike. Technical support and utilities such as power, water and media hook-ups are available.

International flight connections, more than 30,000 parking spots and two rapid-transit rail stops onsite make the airport the ideal location for successful events. Additional event services such as technical support, security, medical care and catering are also provided.

The municon Conference Center is located only steps away from your arriving flight between the airport’s two terminals on the top floor of the München Airport Center (MAC). The largest conference room can accommodate up to 120 people. Between meeting sessions visit the center’s comfortably appointed lounges, or enjoy a meal at Bella Vista, municon’s fine Italian restaurant.

An extensive selection of duty-free and travel articles, ranging from electronics and souvenirs to culinary delicacies can all be found. All shops are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT). The VAT rate in Germany is 19%. Passengers from Non-EU countries have the opportunity to reclaim this tax on goods purchased in Germany upon departure.

Refund process when checking in baggage: Check in at one of the counters and proceed to the customs office with labeled baggage. Customs will check your merchandise, stamp your receipts and handle your baggage. With the stamped receipts, proceed to one of the Cash Refund Desks to receive your refund.

All shops are open seven days a week and do not charge higher prices than their counterparts at Munich City Center.

Regional and Long-Distance Trains

Taking bus, tram, S-Bahn and U-Bahn

German trains are operated by Deutsche Bahn AG and other private transportation companies. Most regional and long distance trains depart from Munich Central Railway Station/ München Hauptbahnhof (Hbf) and can be reached from Munich Airport via S1 or S8 rapid-transit rail lines (S-Bahn). Within Bavaria there is a dense railway network, allowing one to reach towns and regional economic centers by train. For smooth travel without long waiting times, an hourly service with good connections via regional and semi-fast (express) trains is provided. The fastest and most comfortable train is the high-speed Intercity-Express (ICE). For a trip to southeastern Bavaria, it is best to travel with the S8 to Ostbahnhof to connect with the regional and long-distance train network.

Besides the S-Bahn there is a very good network of U-Bahn (underground rapid-transit rail), tram and bus routes within Munich. U-Bahn stations can be recognized by this sign: All tickets are intermodal and available from ticket machines or service centers. In Germany it is not necessary to book train travel in advance. Simply purchase a ticket and board the train. When traveling with the ICE however, it is recommended to make a seat reservation for an additional charge.

This ticket was especially designed for Munich visitors. It is not only valid for public transportation in Munich, but also includes discounts of up to 50% on over 30 attractions like city tours, bike rentals, sights, museums, theaters and restaurants.
