Welcome

TO wENDy wu TOuRS’ LATEST RANgE Of hOLIDAyS TO JAPAN, TAIwAN AND SOuTh kOREA.

Now in my twentieth year of taking tour groups to Asia, I am still as excited and enthralled as in my first years at the prospect of exploring the countries that make up this fascinating and beautiful region of the world, and creating holidays from them for our customers to enjoy. And so I am especially pleased to bring you Wendy Wu Tours new brochure for 2014 to Japan, Taiwan and South Korea together with Mongolia, Hong Kong and Macau. For some years now we have featured a few packages for these countries in the back of our China brochure to gauge how much interest there would be from our customers to visit them. The result was an emphatic yes, we want to go there, so we have prepared this standalone brochure for 2014. Each of the countries visited by Wendy Wu Tours has its own special attractions from big and grandiose sites such as Mt. Fuji in Japan, Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan to the island of Jeju off the south coast of South Korea. And for every visitor to Asian countries there will be a number of experiences that will stand out as the special highlights. It is those highlights that we endeavour to ensure on all the itineraries we offer across the region to make your holiday a wonderful experience. We are constantly discovering these wonderful highlights and many ideas come from our own customers’ comments, while others are from the personal travel of our own staff both from Australia and our offices overseas. When planning for 2014 we had a great deal of feedback to assist us in deciding what to include and so we have added some new independent packages to this brochure; the most fascinating one being the seven day Japan Impressions (page 15). In South Korea we now include a Busan and Gyeongju Short Stay (page 25), visiting two UNESCO World Heritage Temples; the magnificent Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto. Our fully inclusive group tour prices make for great value holidays. With the wide range of different independent itineraries we offer, I am confident that whether you are a first time visitor to Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Mongolia or if this will be your second, third or even fourth visit to these countries, you will find something in this brochure to suit your interests and your budget. I wish you a very enjoyable holiday experience in 2014. Happy travelling!

A detailed day-by-day itinerary arrives with your documents approximately two to three weeks prior to your group tour departure date.

TOuR gRADINg All tours are graded to assist you in deciding which itinerary best suits your personal liking and ability. The gradings are outlined below with symbols which are also reflected on each tour page:

cOmfORTAbLy PAcED TOuR – DIScOVER JAPAN While you will encounter extensive sightseeing on foot and climbing of stairs and in/out of boats throughout the tour, these programmes are comfortably operated to appeal to most people. Generally these tours are shorter in duration and visit the mainstream tourist attractions.

AcTIVE PAcED TOuR – mONgOLIA & ThE NAADAm fESTIVAL Refers to programmes where long periods of sightseeing on foot, climbing of stairs and physical involvement is necessary. These tours are generally longer in duration and could involve long days of driving. Some programmes may also include easy hiking or a homestay. These tours may travel to remote areas and areas of high altitude, up to 5,000m. Accommodation on these tours may be in basic hotels or camps. These programmes require a good level of fitness and mobility.

conjunction with their Booking Form. We recommend all customers visit their doctor for these aforementioned purposes, and/or to confirm that they are physically able to undertake the day-to-day requirements of the tour. Please refer to the Tour Dossier for more information.

AgE REQuIREmENTS For smooth operations on the ground we do not accept children under the age of 12 years on any of our fully inclusive group tours. We recommend that families with children of any age take advantage of our independent packages, as this will give you more flexibility while you are travelling.

gROuP SIZES All fully inclusive group tour departures are guaranteed at the listed price operating with a National Escort in Mongolia (based on a minimum of 10 participants) and Local Guides in Japan.

SINgLE TRAVELLERS Many single travellers prefer to have a private room during their group tour and a Single Hotel Room Option is charged in those circumstances. At Wendy Wu Tours we understand that some single travellers would happily share a room to avoid paying an additional supplement if they had a partner to share with. If you are a single traveller who is willing to share, Wendy Wu Tours will match you up with another single traveller of the same gender on your tour and neither of you will pay the Single Hotel Room Option. However, if we are unable to find another single traveller who is willing to share, Wendy Wu Tours will waive the Single Hotel Room Option.

JOININg yOuR TOuR – fLIghT SchEDuLES We choose to fly with Cathay Pacific Airways to Japan and Mongolia. Connecting flights are with code-share partners such as Dragonair and Mongolian Airlines. All international flights are based on economy class. Limited flight schedules out of Darwin mean that, Darwin travellers will need to make their own way to another capital city to join the tour. Due to constantly changing airline schedules some travellers may require pre or post-tour accommodation, an overnight stopover or have a lengthy transit en route to your

destination. Any cost for accommodation, transportation or meals incurred will be at your own expense. Travellers who require an overnight stopover in Hong Kong, please refer to our Hong Kong and Macau touring on pages 32-37. Normally, frequent flyer miles are not accrued on our packaged group fares, however this is at the discretion of each airline. Although Wendy Wu Tours makes every effort to use the airlines noted on each tour page, an alternative airline may be used due to flight schedule changes or lack of availability.

mEALS All meals (excluding drinks) are included in our fully inclusive group tours from the day of group’s arrival until the day of group’s departure, except where otherwise stated. Breakfast is a combination of local and Western food, usually buffet-style. Lunches and dinners consist of traditional cuisine served as a banquet, with a wide range of specialties to choose from. Western-style meals are rarely provided. Meals are designed so that you can experience the local dishes, their individual flavours as well as the different ways they are prepared throughout the country.

TIPPINg Tipping is a firm and expected element in the tourism industry, apart from Japan where tipping is not part of the culture. A nominated tipping amount is included in all fully inclusive group tour pricing for Mongolia, however it is not collected in your final payment received by Wendy Wu Tours. This is so that it can be paid directly to your National Escort who will then distribute the tips among your main service providers – guides and drivers – on your behalf. Any other tipping, such as tips for bathroom attendants or hotel porters is at your discretion based on satisfaction of services received, as are gratuities for additional requested special services.

Japan INTRODUCTION TO JAPAN

CLIMATE

OSAKA

Japan is a fascinating country situated in northeast Asia between the north Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. It is comprised of more than 4,000 islands, the main four being Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. The Japanese name for Japan is ‘Nippon’ or ‘Nihon’ meaning ‘sun origin’ and is often translated into ‘Land of the Rising Sun’. With a population of approximately 127 million, Japan is the 10th most populated country in the world. It is a land of contrasts; engaging a combination of futuristic cities, ancient culture and diverse scenery. Japan is famous for its relatively short Cherry Blossom season. Flowers can bloom as early as January on the south island of Okinawa, or as late as May on the north island of Hokkaido. In major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, the Cherry Blossom season is generally from early April to mid-May, which makes this a popular time to travel.

Japan’s climate varies widely between regions, from mild to extreme, due to the length of the archipelago and mountains. Japan has four distinct seasons. Summer (June to August) is normally warm and humid with the rainy season lasting from mid-May to June. The typhoon season is generally from August to October. Autumn (September to November) brings cooler temperatures after summer. Winter (December to February) is cold and dry. The cold air coming in from Siberia causes snowfall on the western side of the country that borders the Sea of Japan. Spring (March to May) is generally mild in temperature. Autumn and spring are the best times to travel. Due to the unpredictable climate changes around the world we strongly recommend you check the current weather at your destination prior to your departure in order to pack accordingly.

The modern day city of Osaka, meaning ‘large hill’ or ‘large slope’, is Japan’s third largest city. Established as a major industrial and cultural centre in 1889, it is also home to one of Japan’s most famous castles, Osaka Castle, which was originally built in 1593.

TIME

Passports must be valid for six months beyond the length of stay. Visas are not required for Australian passport holders for entry into Japan for stays of up to 90 days.

Japan is 1 hour behind Australian EST.

LANGUAGE The official national language is Japanese, however, English is widely spoken.

CURRENCY The local currency is known as the Japanese Yen (JPY). 1AUD = 87JPY (approximately)

South Korea INTRODUCTION TO SOUTH KOREA

CLIMATE

Busan

South Korea is a country determined to leave its previous troubles behind. This region has distinct features; the traditional and historical, as well as the sleek and cosmopolitan. Despite the everwidening gap between the two cultures, the latter has not completely replaced the former. These days most towns consist of a new fashionable area with coffee shops, nightclubs, karaoke bars and stores selling a variety of goods – everything from designer-label clothing to freshly baked French bread. In these same towns you will also find the Korea of old; alleyways and street markets in an intriguing maze where vendors sell everything from fruits and vegetables to seafood, just as they have done for hundreds of years. South Korea has much to offer the avid traveller and many believe it to be the unspoiled gem of Asia. It possesses untouched natural landscapes, a vibrant history with traditional culture and local people who are friendly and welcoming.

Korea has four distinct seasons being spring, summer, autumn and winter. Spring falls between late March to May, and autumn falls between late September to November; these two seasons are the most comfortable times to travel. The winter months of December to early March can plummet to below freezing, whereas the summer months of June to early September are very hot and humid. The rainy season in Korea occurs from late June to early July and is known as the ‘changma’ season. Due to the unpredictable climate changes around the world we strongly recommend you check the current weather at your destination prior to your departure in order to pack accordingly.

Located on the southeast peninsula of South Korea, Busan is the second largest city after Seoul. A dynamic port city offering a relaxed and laid back atmosphere, it boasts superb beaches, scenic cliffs and mountains which provide excellent hiking opportunities. Hot springs are scattered throughout the city.

TIME South Korea is 2 hours behind Australian EST.

LANGUAGE The official national language is Korean.

CURRENCY The local currency is known as the Korean Won (KRW), where W1 is divided into 100 Chon. 1AUD = 1,020KRW (approximately)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Passports must be valid for six months beyond the length of stay. Visas are not required for Australian passport holders entering Korea for stays of up to 90 days.

Cities SEOUL Seoul is the capital of South Korea and home to 11 million of the nation’s 46 million people. As well as being one of the oldest cities, Seoul is also the country’s financial, political, commercial and cultural centre. The old and new mix in this dynamic city, offering the visitor plenty of sightseeing opportunities such as the famed Gyeongbok Palace, Seoul Tower and Insadong Antique Alley.

JEJU ISLAND (JEJU-SI) Jeju Island is Korea’s largest sub-tropical island located off the south coast. It boasts a treasure chest of tourist attractions including many spectacular geographical features such as the Hallasan Volcano, beaches, impressive waterfalls and fauna. Its culture, traditions and dialect are also remarkably different to those of the mainland.

GYEONGJU The most important period in Korean history was during the time of the Silla Dynasty that reigned from the 1st Century BC right up until the 10th Century AD. The capital of this powerful kingdom was at Gyeongju in the southeast of the peninsula and the town is now almost an open air museum housing a seemingly endless array of tombs, temples, shrines, castles and gardens.

Getting around Seoul Below is some information on transport to assist you in getting to and from Seoul Incheon International Airport.

Limousine bus transfers There are two types of buses that run from Incheon Airport to Seoul; the City Limousine Buses (operate between 05002230hrs) and the Kal Limousine Buses (operate between 0530-2130hrs); both of which take passengers to a selection of the major city hotels in Seoul. Buses usually run every 15 minutes and take approximately 90 minutes to reach the city centre. Limousine bus tickets cannot be pre-booked, however, tickets can be purchased from ticket booths on the first floor at Incheon Airport.

Private car transfers This service is convenient as it offers travellers a hassle-free arrival and a ‘meet and greet’ service. However, due to the tolls and the distance of the transfer, you may find them to be very expensive. Prices are from approximately AU$100 per person one way (based on a minimum of two passengers travelling together).

Mongolia INTRODUCTION TO MONGOLIA

LANGUAGE

Bordered by Siberia to the north and China to the south, Mongolia is the second largest landlocked country in the world, with a varying geography from the Gobi Desert in the south and mountain regions to the north and west. With a landscape that is quite breathtaking, it offers pristine lakes, rugged mountains and incredible wide open spaces. Khongoryn Els which translates to ‘singing sands’, is the home to Mongolia’s largest sand dunes, Lake Khovsgol is the largest and deepest lake in Mongolia. Surrounded by mountains and lush forests, it is home to a variety of animals and species of birds. With a turbulent history, Mongolia was first declared a Mongol Empire in 1206 by Genghis Khan. One of the most wonderful events that takes place in Mongolia is the fascinating Naadam Festival, with people arriving from all over the country to participate. This spectacular occasion is a photographer’s paradise, with an array of activities, food and crafts on offer. Mongolia conjures up images of the legends of Genghis Khan, horses galloping through the expansive open plains and camels crossing the Gobi Desert. The warm-hearted locals will inspire you as they go about their lives with gentle peace and humility, but most of all they will reward you with the experience of a lifetime.

The official national language is Mongolian. Kalmyk, Kazakh, Buriat and Mandarin are also widely spoken.

TIME Mongolia is 2 hours behind Australian EST.

26

CURRENCY The local currency is known as the Tughrik (MNT). 1AUD = 1,430MNT (approximately)

CLIMATE Mongolia’s climate can be described as ‘extreme continental’, with warm summers and long sub-arctic winters. The summer season begins at the end of May and lasts until early October, with an average temperature of 16°C. The most popular time to travel is mid-July, which is also when the world famous Naadam Festival is held in Ulaanbaatar. Winters are long and cold with temperatures often falling well below -18°C, however, the daytime temperatures are warmer. Due to the unpredictable climate changes around the world we strongly recommend you check the current weather at your destination prior to your departure in order to pack accordingly.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Passports must be valid for six months beyond the length of stay. Visas are required for Australian travellers, the price of which is already included in the fully inclusive price of our group tour for Australian passport holders (providing all applications are received by Wendy Wu Tours within the required visa processing time frame).

Hong Kong INTRODUCTION TO hong kong

KOWLOON PENINSULA

If this is your first trip to Hong Kong you will be amazed by the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. Located on the southern coast of China, Hong Kong consists of three main territories; Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories, as well as more than 200 Outlying Islands, the largest of which is Lantau Island. Hong Kong has transformed from a quiet and small fishing village to one of the world’s most thriving and cosmopolitan cities. With a population of almost seven million, bustling sidewalks, dazzling skyscrapers and flashing neon signs, the densely packed islands can seem chaotic at first glance. However this modern city is wellknown for being structured, safe and easy to navigate. Hong Kong offers visitors a dynamic mix of the East and West, with over 150 years of colonial history and ageless Chinese traditions, teamed with numerous attractions, lively festivals, unrivalled shopping and a vast array of food choices. Discover what makes this charismatic and entertaining city a fantastic holiday experience.

Kowloon is the peninsula to the north of Hong Kong. Its name, meaning ‘Nine Dragons’, comes from its eight tallest mountains with the ‘ninth dragon’ being the Song Dynasty’s Emperor Bing who named it. Kowloon is jam-packed with shopping districts to explore and eateries to sample local dishes. Shop for a bargain at Temple Street Night Markets and the Ladies Markets or enjoy world-class shopping along Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Take an evening stroll along the Avenue of Stars and watch Victoria Harbour light up at night with the spectacular laser light show, Symphony of Lights. Kowloon is constantly buzzing with activity and will leave a memorable impression on all who visit.

HONG KONG ISLAND Hong Kong, meaning ‘fragrant harbour’, is home to some of the regions most iconic attractions. Take the Peak Tram, a 120-year-old funicular railway, to the top of Victoria Peak for a panoramic view of the city. Visit Repulse Bay with its crescentshaped beach, popular with locals and tourists. Relax while enjoying a sampan ride around Aberdeen for a glimpse of traditional life on the fishing boats. Stroll through Stanley Market and browse through its many small shops selling souvenirs and knick-knacks or visit Causeway Bay’s shopping malls and department stores. On the southern side of the island, Ocean Park provides fun for the whole family, featuring thrill rides, animal exhibits and shows. Hong Kong Island is a metropolis with something for everyone.

Macau Introduction to Macau

COLOANE

Macau is located 60km southwest of Hong Kong and consists of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are connected to Macau by two bridges. The name Macau was derived from the local name, A Ma Gao, ‘place of A Ma’, in honour of the Goddess of Seafarers. According to local legend, A Ma was a young girl from Fujian Province who saved a fishing boat from sinking by calming the stormy seas. With baroque-style churches, traditional Chinese buildings, gardens and picturesque landscapes, there is much more to Macau than its well-known glitzy casinos. Immerse yourself in the fusion of Portuguese, Chinese and Macanese cultures that make Macau a truly unique destination. Discover the rich cultural heritage along the cobblestone lanes of its historic centre, sample culinary delights with influences from Southeast Asia and Europe, experience world-class entertainment or simply relax and indulge at one of Macau’s luxurious hotels.

Macau's countryside, Coloane, was once a small fishing village frequented by pirates. A stroll through the narrow streets of Coloane Village will reveal old-world charms, including St. Francis Xavier Chapel, and an authentic atmosphere of traditional Macau. It is here you will find Lord Stow's Bakery, serving up delicious Portuguese egg tarts.

MACAU PENINSULA The Macau Peninsula is home to Macau's most iconic attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage listed Europeanstyle buildings in the Historic Centre of Macau, Senado Square with its patterned cobblestone pavement, the A-Ma Temple, Guia Fortress and Lighthouse and Macau's most familiar landmark, the Ruin's of St. Paul's Church.

TAIPA Taipa Island provides a mix of Chinese charm, Portuguese architecture and towering casinos. Taipa Village has a number of shop-houses typical of Southern China and the 100m-long Rua da Cunha (‘Food Street’) is lined with a number of gourmet restaurants serving Chinese, Portuguese and Macanese cuisine. The famous Taipa House Museum, which consists of five original green mansions with verandas, gives a glimpse into the lives of early 19thcentury well-to-do Macanese families. The Cotai Strip runs parallel to Taipa Village and offers top class entertainment, dining and retail options as well as a number of luxury hotels and resorts.

Getting to and around Macau Macau is easily accessible by jetfoil from Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong or from China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon. All visitors to Macau must hold a valid passport. Australian passport holders do not require a visa for Macau. Upon arrival in Macau you will find that many of the hotels have shuttle buses waiting at the Macau Ferry Terminal which run between the hotel, ferry terminal and the Cotai Strip. Macau also has an efficient bus system which connects Macau, Taipa and Coloane.

Accommodation Macau hotel prices are based on a per person, per night rate in a lead-in room in low season and include daily breakfast (seasonality surcharges may apply). A booking fee applies for accommodation of three nights or less. Contact our Reservations Department for a more extensive range of hotels. Availability is based on request. Hotel check-in time in Macau is generally 1400hrs and check-out is 1200hrs. Meals in our packages are indicated as follows: (B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch and (D) = Dinner.
