DayDreams Afloat in Turkey 2012 is rapidly approaching. This will be our 25th anniversary year and plans are well under way for a special programme. Jenny Day started DayDreams in 1987. It all began after a fantastic holiday on board a small ‘gulet’ exploring the spectacular Turkish coastline. Intent on sharing the experience with friends, she returned several times the following year organising her own private charters on the first Cevri Hasan. Using the organisational skills that come second nature to her as a professional public relations consultant and events organiser, she put together several boat parties of friends, colleagues and journalists. They were so successful that friends told their friends, and the word spread. Her dream of offering a style of holiday, once the preserve of the rich and famous, to a wider audience had become a reality and DayDreams had become a business.
The Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines are still unspoilt, providing many magical moments for that chance encounter with dolphins or a loggerhead turtle. Turkey’s fascinating culture, with more than a hint of the East, ensures a holiday to remember.
Following her 1987 charter of the first Cevri Hasan, DayDreams has held exclusivity for the UK on all the Cevri Hasans - the latest being Cevri Hasan III, IV and V. They were always in addition to the myriad choice of boats available for exclusive private charters, which now include many superior de-luxe gulets. Family groups and friends (many of whom choose DayDreams to celebrate a reunion or anniversary) are all regular travellers with the company. More recently, a tailor-made service was introduced to enable travellers to combine a stay on land (whether guided tour or hotel stay) with their charter.
‘Jenny Day with Captain Mustafa, Cevri Hasan III’
“We are in our sixth year with DayDreams and we will continue to use the Cevri Hasan III and Captain Mustafa until we can’t make the journey. Each year has been utterly marvellous, with great crews, itineraries and food. When Captain Mustafa asks each day where we want to sail to, we don’t really care, because we know he will look after us and all will be well and wherever we go anyway will be beautiful. We just adore the time on board and next year have extended our journey to 3 weeks” Jim Dunn and friends travelled in July 2010.
The concept of bringing together mixed groups of individuals and couples into ‘schooner parties’, enabling single travellers in particular to experience life on board a privately chartered boat, continues to be an important feature of the business. In 1992, Cevri Hasan III was launched following close collaboration between her owners and Jenny Day over a design specifically suited to the Schooner Parties. She continues to lead a few of these unique holidays each summer. Escorted land tours were introduced in 2000, all now featured under the ‘Small Group Programme’.

Our close attention to detail - both before and during the holiday, has ensured the continuing success of the business. As experts in the area, Jenny Day and the DayDreams team, both at the UK office and in Turkey, can advise clients about every aspect of their holiday. We can make suggestions on the itinerary, the food, the flights and the most appropriate boat. We advise on which route is best for sailing or archaeological sites, the forestry trails for walkers, and at which hotel or pension to stay on land. Our formula works, as borne out by the over 60 per cent of repeat clients who return year after year - one traveller managed to sail regularly with us for more than 13 years. We have built up a reputation for quality holidays throughout the world with clients from America, Australia, South Africa, Canada, as well as the UK and other European countries. We are a safe pair of hands to make your holiday in Turkey a memorable experience.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Charter Your Own Private Boat Wooden boats have been plying their trade along the ancient Anatolian coast for centuries. Now present day Turkey, it is a popular holiday destination. One of the most important old towns with a tradition of boat building is Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus in ancient times. It is the birthplace of Herodotus and the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the tomb of King Mausolus. It is from here that DayDreams sources its collection of beautiful wood built gulets and schooners. Constructed in a mixture of woods: pine, teak and mahogany, in a variety of sizes and standards, modern boat designs have retained many of the traditional features from the past, whilst ensuring that the 21st century traveller can enjoy modern amenities and comfort. The latest de-luxe gulets recently added to our list are as good as many 5* hotels. A week or two sailing or cruising aboard one of these romantic vessels, waited on hand and foot, is the perfect holiday for any group of people. DayDreams has a wide variety of these unique boats available for private hire, whether for a honeymoon, the annual family holiday or a larger group wanting to sail and cruise in style. Many of the 26 boats, such as the three Cevri Hasans, have been built to cruise or sail (winds permitting) with interiors individually designed and fitted to provide a generous amount of space. DayDreams are the sole UK agents for the Cevri Hasans. There are also 6 de-luxe gulets at the top end of our list and a further 4 gulets for those on a small budget. They can comfortably accommodate between 6 and16 people, depending on the size of boat, with plenty of deck space for everyone. Each boat is well equipped with a variety of watersports equipment and the new obligatory AIS central tracking system. A professional and relaxed informal atmosphere prevails, with a captain, cook and crew to run the boat and cater to your needs. We have many years experience travelling along this coastline and we can advise you on your route and the places of interest you might want to visit. We will brief the captain in advance of your arrival so he will steer a course to suit you – remember, this is your private boat for the duration of your stay. Once on board, flexibility in planning your route and your day is a feature of our charters, although Jenny Day can provide information and ideas in advance to smooth the way. Many captains like to put up their sails, winds permitting. However, this is best on days with no particular place to go. Delicious Turkish food is prepared by your onboard cook and all meals are eaten ‘al fresco’ on deck, except in early and late season when you might prefer to use the comfortable salon. There is a lot more to Turkish food than kebabs. Most of the recipes prepared on our boats use different styles of Anatolian cuisine using the best fresh produce available, with most meals typical of those eaten at home in this part of Turkey. There are numerous 'mezze' dishes using vegetables, pulses, pastries, yogurt and of course, garlic. Wonderful salads, sometimes using wild ingredients such as samphire which is found locally; highly flavoured, aromatic meat dishes, chicken and lamb casseroles, barbeques and fish and a variety of rice and bulgur pilau recipes. Vegetables and a wide variety of fruits are mostly seasonal, so if you like fresh broad beans or strawberries in particular, travel to Turkey in May. We will liaise with you about your menu and ensure all provisions, including your drinks list, are on board before your arrival. We do not operate a ‘bar system’. You simply pay at cost for all provisions on arrival unless you book a full board arrangement in advance. Foodies looking for more details on menus should contact Jenny Day.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Coastal Itineraries Turkey is a fascinating and friendly country where you can soak up the history of ancient civilisations, savour the atmosphere of market towns and villages and still experience the beauty of wild and dramatic places. Whether on land or sea, the scenery is spectacular. The Mediterranean and Aegean areas are still surprisingly unspoilt along the coast from Bodrum to Olympos in the south east. Our boats will sail (winds permitting) or motor along your chosen route. There are a variety of itineraries to follow, depending on your interests and you can now combine the Dodecanese Islands with Turkey. Here is a snapshot of the various routes. All these itineraries can be followed in reverse to the routes indicated here. More details and pictures can be found on our website at www. daydreams-travel.com
FETHIYE GULF TO ANTALYA (The Lycian Coastline) Without a doubt the best area for archaeological sites accessible from the sea. This route can be followed in sections depending on whether you have one week, ten days or two weeks to spare. Our captains will organise local transport to take you on visits to archaeological sites when appropriate, although many are just a short walk from your mooring.
Fethiye Gulf. From Ekincik you can visit the ancient Carian city of Caunus by water taxi. Fethiye town has an excellent old market quarter and Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff. BODRUM-MARMARIS (The Hisaranu Gulf) This route has a bit of everything. You can visit Knidos for archaeology and interesting history. There are villages and beautiful bays in the Hisaranu Gulf and nightlife and extensive shopping at the end of your charter in Marmaris.
BODRUM-BODRUM (The Gokova Gulf) You could spend a week or ten days here, slowly savouring some of the most beautiful and breakthtaking scenery to be found along the entire coastline. Surrounded by high mountains, there are numerous forestry trails for walking and a few small villages.
DODECANESE ISLANDS (Greece) There are two recommended itineraries accessible from the Turkish coastline between Kusadasi and Samos to the north, down to Kos, Rhodes/Marmaris at the southern end. Islands you can visit include Samos, Patmos, Lipsi, Leros, Kos, Nissyros, Tilos, and Symi.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Schooner Parties on Cevri Hasan III Imagine waking in the morning with the sun streaming through the porthole and pulling on your swimsuit for a swim before breakfast. Anchor up, off you go to a beautiful bay for a swim, or potter about on a canoe. A delicious lunch follows and more swimming and sun. Winds permitting, the sails go up and off you go again to another magical setting for dinner and an overnight stay. DayDreams have been organising their schooner parties since 1987 with great success. Run more in the style of an informal house party, considerable thought goes into putting together a good social mix of single people, couples and friends. There are many regular travellers in each group with Jenny Day personally leading the party as tour leader. If you are looking to escape the everyday stresses of life, a week or two aboard Cevri Hasan III is definitely the answer. Its spacious deck areas provide ample room for everyone, even to find that corner alone for a few quiet moments. You will lose all sense of time as you drift from one idyllic bay to the next, waited on hand and foot. Your biggest decision of the day will be whether to swim or paddle a canoe, soak up the sun, drink a beer or gin and tonic; or if you’re feeling energetic, take a walk ashore along one of the many forestry trails or explore a small village. The very best of Anatolian home cooking is a feature of our schooner parties with a generous budget to ensure you dine in style. Delicious chicken and meat casseroles, barbeques, wonderful fresh fruit and salads, numerous mezze, fresh fish and countless recipes loved by both vegetarians and meat eaters.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Schooner Parties on Cevri Hasan III A variety of itineraries along the Turkish coast and Dodecanese islands are carefully planned with opportunities to explore on shore every day. Local transport is organised when interesting archaeological sites are accessible from a harbour such as; Arykanda from Finike, or Pinara and the Saklikent gorge from Fethiye. When we explore the Dodecanese islands we visit the crater of a volcano on Nissyros, the small mountainside monastery on Tilos and the monastery of St. John on Patmos. April and May are good times for wild flowers and walking forestry trails along the coastline. June and September are good for sun worshippers without being too hot to explore on shore. October is still lovely with temperatures around 80F. – an ideal time for those interested in exploring on shore. There are numerous archaeological sites included in the coastal itineraries, with many charming small towns and villages to explore. Typical itineraries include Bodrum and the Gokova gulf and the Hisaranu gulf, the Northern Dodecanese islands, the Southern Dodecanese islands and the Lycian coastline between Fethiye and Finike. As many of our itineraries start or finish at Bodrum, we recommend a stopover at the Marina Vista Hotel overlooking the castle and harbour, to provide an extra day to explore the town and the crusader castle and award winning museum of underwater archaeology. For more detailed itineraries and dates please contact the office for the current Small Group Programme, or go to our website.
"Fourteen years since our last trip, things have not changed. Great company, food, fantastic crew and then there is Jenny, tour leader, friend.. thank you very much" Martin & Julie Oatley travelled on a schooner party in September 2010.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Escorted Land Tours - Small Group Holidays Over the years we have organised a variety of three and seven day land-based holidays linked to our schooner parties. The idea of a small group of 10-16 people travelling together in the style of a ‘house-party’ has proved popular, particularly with those who like to keep their feet firmly on the ground. These land tours are personally led by Jenny Day, who has researched interesting itineraries exploring some of Turkey’s most fascinating inland cities and historic sites mixed with places off the beaten track. We usually plan dates either before or after a schooner party, so that anyone wanting to combine land and sea can book a longer stay. ISTANBUL is a popular stopover at the end of a schooner party. This is one of our favourite cities, always vibrant, exciting and great for shopping. The Ottoman palaces, mosques and museums are wonderful, with so many to choose from you would be hard pressed to fit them all in on one visit. We will organise your hotel, guided walking tour of the old city, transfers and any other activity, whether for an individual or several people travelling together. We also operate a long weekend house-party style holiday based in the old city every 2/3 years. The next special Istanbul event will be in November 2012 when we will celebrate the end of our 25th anniversary year with a houseparty staying at the Arena Hotel in the old city. This is one of our favourite small hotels, a 19th Century Ottoman stone house, sympathetically restored by the family descendants of the original owner. EARLY MAY 2011, we have planned a north Aegean tour which includes Pergamon, Cunda island and Ayvalik, Assos, Troy and the Dardenelles and Gallipoli. Pergamon is one of Turkey’s most important archaeological sites, where Alexander the Great left a significant part of his wealth before leaving for his Asia expedition. The coastline around Ayvalik and Assos was home to many Ottoman Greeks prior to 1923 and there are many picturesque streets of their old houses, now restored and refurbished. We have also included two days based at a small hotel in the Kaz mountains for some relaxation and walking. Kazdaglari, (Ida mountain in Turkish) was known as the mountain of the gods. Homer mentions it in his ‘Iliad’ many times. The Trojan war took place here. The Kaz mountain region is famous locally for a landscape filled with rare plant species, firs, streams and waterfalls and is popular with Turkish walkers and nature lovers. (The detailed itinerary is available from the office and it can also be found on our website.) Ionion cities of the southern Aegean also feature in some of our escorted holidays – Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and the Temple of Apollo at Didyma. There are several variations on these itineraries as they can be part of a schooner party programme or land tour. Please contact the office for more details.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Combine a Stay on Land with a Cruise Along the Coast Journey through pine forests, passing from one green and fertile valley to another; across arid plains, through vast acres of cotton fields in October, market garden produce throughout the spring and summer, with much of this terrain suspended between an awesome mountainous back drop. As you gaze upon rivers spilling over gigantic boulders, sometimes almost hanging in space, you’ll wonder at the majesty of nature. The constantly changing landscape will keep you spell bound. Isolated villages nestling in the mountains and valleys, where time has stood still for centuries; where some of the oldest traditional crafts are still maintained; ancient and mystical sites far off the beaten track, inaccessible to all but the enterprising. Whether you spend a week or ten days on a boat, it is always an added bonus when you combine a spell on land with your cruise. You could plan a few days ‘off the beaten track’ based at one of the many hotels or pensions, or a short stay in Istanbul. If you have more time available why not think about an inland tour? We can plan your route to take in your special interests whether in history, archaeology, bird watching, mountain walking or just exploring all before you. Turkey is a vast country with much to offer the intrepid traveller. We have detailed here a few ideas for journeys on land which could be combined with your coastal cruise. Alternatively you might want to combine one of our escorted Land Tours with your charter. CENTRAL ANATOLIA- the capital city Ankara, Cappadocia with its extraordinary volcanic landscape and Hattusas, the Hittite City dating from 2500 BC. These marvellous places formed the basis of a wonderful tour led by Jenny Day in 2008. We plan to repeat these areas in different escorted itineraries in 2012. They can also be included as part of a tailor-made tour for individuals or private groups. ANTALYA AND THE ANCIENT REGION OF PAMPHYLIA - Antalya is a coastal city surrounded by the Taurus mountains. There are three recommended archaeological sites to visit in this area. Termessos, perched on the side of Mount Solymos is a fascinating ruined city with fantastic views and a personal favourite of Jenny Day. Close to Antalya is Aspendos, one of the best preserved Roman theatres to be found in this region, which also hosts an opera and ballet season in mid June. Perge, founded around 1000 BC is a well excavated site with impressive ruins including Roman baths, a stadium and a Byzantine basilica. If history is not a priority, a visit to the Koprulu Kanyon is certainly recommended. This is a national park with stunning scenery, Roman bridges and the fast flowing Koprulu river running through it. White water rafting operators can be found here. At the end of the final stretch of road is the small ruined city of Selge.
15
DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Southern Aegean - Ephesus and the Ionian cities
Three days based at a hotel in Kusadasi, or pension in Selcuk, would be the minimum time needed to fit in all these fascinating sites, particularly a visit to one of the most important cities of the ancient world, Ephesus. Even with large numbers of tourists around, you can still appreciate this spectacular well preserved city. We also recommend including the museum and Basilica of St. John which are close by at Selcuk. The Ionian cities of Priene, Miletos and the Temple of Apollo at Didyma are all worth a visit and can be seen in a day. If you can spare more time in this region, travel further inland to visit Pamukkale, famous for its extraordinary landscape of white calcium deposits and springs cascading down over the natural pools. This is also the location of ancient Hierapolis. With an overnight stay at Pamukkale, you could then travel on to Aphrodisias. This is a remarkable site with a special atmosphere; in the middle of nowhere but with numerous well-preserved buildings and sculptures from the Greek and Roman periods. The most stunning sight is the huge stadium. Sculptures and other important finds are housed in a museum. We have a number of tried and tested itineraries covering all these marvellous archaeological sites. If you don’t have time for them all, you could choose those of specific interest and we will organise a tailor-made programme to suit you.
Istanbul - where east meets west A few days staying in the old city in one of the restored Ottoman houses (boutique hotels) will enable you to visit some of the world’s greatest museums and buildings. It is just a few minutes walk from some of these hotels to the Topkapi museum, once home to the Ottoman Sultans and housing a magnificent collection of jewels and artefacts; the 5th century cathedral St Sophia; the famous Blue Mosque with its six minarets and blue Iznik tiles, the Byzantine underground cistern, numerous museums and of course the Grand Bazaar and street markets for shoppers. Foodies will find a diverse and fantastic range of restaurants throughout the old and new city. Lastly, and not to be missed, is a trip up the Bosphorus on a ferry or private
motor boat for a marvellous view of the Istanbul skyline. If you have visited Istanbul before and want to experience a different aspect of this exciting city, try one of the new hotels in recently restored historic buildings such as the Palazzo Donizetti or Pera Palace in Beyoglu. For the hot months of July and August there are some excellent waterfront hotels on the Bosphorus, both on the European and Asian side. We know the city well and can arrange a tailormade itinerary for any individual or group. We will be finishing our 25th Anniversary year in Istanbul in November 2012 with a house party and special tour.
