Access is quick with plenty of flights in and around the resorts. Some clients drive down from the Channel ports and take an overnight stop to break the nine-hour drive with others preferring the overnight ferries to Bilbao or Santander. Once there, the resorts, courses and restaurants are all local so you’ll be doing more driving on the course than on the roads.

France has everything one could wish for and Bordeaux is the case in point. Established by the Romans who found the natural river ports, wine, and the perfect agricultural conditions to their liking, the area has prospered for over 2000 years. It retains all

Biarritz is a true golfing paradise. Add fine weather, great food and extensive nightlife to the equation and the result is a fantastic golf holiday.

Pont Pierre, Bordeaux.

The scenery is impressive with massive beaches, thick forests, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees. Après-golf is lively with the locals loving a good party. And not only is it fun, it’s classy: remarkable hotels and villas, casinos, smart shops, pleasure ports and well-preserved fishing villages. Here’s an idea! Stay a night or two in or around Bordeaux, play the best courses (Medoc and Lacanau), and then take the short drive down to Biarritz and play Seignosse, Hossegor, Chiberta and Moliets...We’ve got accommodation to match every taste and there’s the small matter of being able to play five European Top 100 courses in one week... Absolutely unique!

Excellent practice facilities Brand new clubhouse with panoramic terrace

Bordering the Gironde River and set over 45 hectares around the reputed hotel, Margaux has rapidly matured into a lovely course.

The undulating countryside and eight holes with water hazards provide a scenic and clever test of golf where only poor shots are penalised. The remaining holes are parkland where you can open up a bit, but it’s ‘target golf’ to the greens. Relais de Margaux can seriously vie for being one of the most complete golfing resorts in France. Easy walking.

French Golf Holidays bonuses Free room upgrade Seventh night free all year ■ Free golf at Margaux for groups of 8 - 14 people from Nov - Mar ■ A welcome bottle of red wine in your bedroom ■ Special three-night b/b & golf deal in standard rooms available ■

There are 100 bedrooms shared between the original chateau and sympathetically stylish extension. All are large and well-equipped and most overlook the golf course. Our prices are based on the Superior Harmonie bedrooms. There are two worthy restaurants including an all-day brasserie and, of course, a wine cellar and bar of note.

Facilities include a spa, health suite, a huge panoramic terrace and, of course, the championship golf course. For modern luxury in an ageless setting, Margaux is the perfect vintage.

The main course is Les Chateaux – one of the best in Europe and deceptively tough with generous fairways bordered by penal rough, heather, broom, water hazards and ditches. Drive well and play with a plan for each hole and you’ll get to the large, contoured greens with a good chance for par! Entertaining and visually appealing, this is golf at its finest.

The back nine, where tall pine trees frame verdant fairways and smallish greens, is beautiful. Commencing with relatively open parkland holes, Les Vignes gets prettier and tougher as the round progresses. With great investment in maintenance and a classy clubhouse, this club easily justifies its ranking among the very best in France. Easy walking. Nine miles north-west of Bordeaux centre. Both courses have huge wine bottles as 150yard markers with each marker named after the best Medoc vineyards, the wines of which are readily available in the clubhouse.

On the links holes, it’s best to play bump-andruns and place your drive on the correct side of the wide fairways. And on the woodland holes, change your game to long drives and target approaches. Chiberta offers a warm welcome to our clients particularly mid-week. A top rate golf club. Easy walking. Two miles north of Biarritz.

Good holiday golf ■ Beautiful clubhouse with panoramic views

This is “big, modern” golf complete with all the hazards clearly on show so experienced golfers should put a good score together and less accomplished ones can gather some confidence.

A very agreeable American-style course that is arguably the least demanding and most Southern European of the Biarritz layouts.

Makila takes full advantage of the mature oaks and the views of the Pyrenees round off the day nicely. Quite hilly but easy walking. Five miles south-east of Biarritz and four miles from Arcangues.

Quite hilly and very tough from the back so, unless you're off single-figures and can hit it with the ‘big boys’, our advice is to take buggies, play off the forward tees and enjoy the views. Short by modern standards, the landing zones are tight, the greens are quite small and there are lots and lots of bunkers...This is a course for the thinking golfer or one who heads the sand-saves table! A members club with a fine sporting tradition, it is best to play here midweek to catch it at its most welcoming. Hilly in parts. Two miles south of Saint-Jeande-Luz and eight miles south-west of Biarritz.

parkland course with devious fairways and small greens. With wind coming from the nearby Atlantic, Biarritz can certainly show its teeth and you'll need to have all the shots of a links player to muster a good score. Surrounded by impressive villas, there's an easy-going holiday feel about the place and the lovely clubhouse and staff are first-class. Very flat. Just outside the centre of the resort.
