Well guarded greens A ‘thinker’s course’

The West Course is a championship course in its own right and arguably needs more course management than its wonderful neighbour.

As with all great links, the wind plays an important part in the decision-making process so be prepared to lose a couple of strokes on your first round. The first four holes are the ones most likely to cause damage to your score so make sure you loosen up. The entire course features large sand dunes with sheltered greens and run in all directions making for a great and testing round of golf. Club selection from the tee is vital to take advantage of the intricate fairways. This is a ‘thinker’s course’ where distance is not important. This is a great walk and, if you know how to play links, you’ll love and respect this clever layout.

The hotel’s leisure facilities include an indoor and outdoor pool, gym and tennis courts.

Over 70 bunkers The greens are some of the largest and fastest in England

Despite being located next to the sea, you won’t see the water but you will certainly realise you’re playing classic links golf. Deal (as the course is known) is laid out on a stretch of land extending to Sandwich Bay where all-natural terrain has been brilliantly used to provide a perfect test of seaside golf.

Of course, the wind is a major factor, but so are the dominating sand dunes and crafty greens. Don’t look at your score, just play matchplay and enjoy. There are over 70 carefully positioned bunkers. Despite their size they can be easily seen from the tees and fairways, and are in the most part steep and revetted. This is a lively and cleverly designed course. On the first and last holes there are water ditches which come into play for the approach shot. As the course runs outward parallel to the pebble beach, this can present quite a problem - as the sea wall and beach are integral parts of the course.

with a micro climate, Littlestone is one of the driest places in the British Isles. This leads to some wonderful variations of ground and "lies" for your ball. Once on the greens you will find they are probably the truest greens on any links. Although much of the course is below sea level, there are some spectacular views from the high spots.

Prince’s, with its 27 holes of championship links, has hosted the Open Championship and is currently an Open Qualifying course. In 2011, Prince’s will again host final qualifying for the Open Championship.

Prince’s offers all that is best in modern links golf and the centrally-located clubhouse allows for easy access enabling the course to be played in three loops of nine holes. The three nine-holes are called Shore, Himalayas and Dunes with the most interesting combination being Shore-Himalayas as it embraces most of the original layout. The course is famed for its deep and unforgiving bunkers and cross winds off the English Channel. Take your favourite wood and be sure to hit the fairways, otherwise you’re in for a tough round.

The holes are very tough and strength and accuracy is essential on the Par-fours. The carries can sometimes be long so choose a sensible tee.

All the holes are very different and memorable. Royal St. George’s features thatched roof shelters, the red cross of St George on the flags and the infamous bunker on the 4th hole which is cut in to a huge dune making it the UK’s deepest and tallest bunker....So don’t go in! Nicklaus has transformed an older course to create a modern classic that offers a challenge to all abilities of golfer, testing even the greatest players! The course is a typical Golden Bear set up - long holes, generous fairways,

CHAMPIONSHIP huge bunkers and fiendishly undulating greens. A fine complement to its Braid-designed sister courses. Buggies are recommended.

Queen's Par 68. 5660 yards. ■

Spectacular woodland setting

The natural beauty of the Queen's Course has inspired some of the world's most experienced players. Threading through high ridges on the north and west sides of the estate, the Queen's boasts a lovely woodland setting, lochans and ditches as water hazards, as well as many moorland characteristics. At 3,050 yards long, the challenge of the first nine can be deceptive, with even some of the best players finding it a test to make Par into a

CHAMPIONSHIP fresh south-westerly breeze. Not as testing as the King's or Centenary, but rewarding in so many other ways.
