◗ ... the popular Rudolfinum on the east bank of the river Vltava is named after Archduke Rudolf, successor to the Habsburg throne? It was constructed between 1876 and 1881 according to the design of the legendary architects Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz, who also created the National Theatre in Prague. The Rudolfinum halls originally served as venues for concerts and exhibitions; in the interwar period even as the seat of the Parliament. At the present time, the building belongs to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and its exquisite halls are again used for concerts and exhibitions. www . ceskafilharmonie.cz

◗ ... following extensive repairs, the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, situated at the end of the Charles Bridge, has been reopened to visitors? A precious example of Prague post-Hussite Gothic architecture, it was built circa 1464 in the place of an older Romanesque tower. Between 1879 and 1883, it was modified by the architect Josef Mocker. The tower is 43.5 metres high, with the walkway being 26 metres above the ground. The prismatic structure bears a unique truss system dating from immediately after 1526. The top of the tower affords a breathtaking view of Prague and visitors can also attend exhibitions and concerts held inside the building. On the Royal Route

The historical Royal Route leading through the centre of Prague was in the past taken by future Czech Kings in a procession to their coronation ceremony at St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle. It started in the Old Town in the place of today’s Square of the Republic dětmi next to the Municipal House, at the Royal Court, the erstwhile luxury city residence of Czech monarchs built circa 1380 by Wenceslas IV, King of Bohemia.

From the Powder Gate, the Royal Route leads through Celetná, one of the most elegant Old Town streets, which is lined with houses built in all historical architectural styles, from Romanesque to early 20th century, including the stunning Cubist House of the Black Madonna designed by Josef Gočár. Celetná street leads into the Old Town Square, the true heart of Prague.

The route served this purpose until 1484, when Vladislav Jagiellon moved the royal seat back to Prague Castle. In 1689 the Royal Court was devastated by fire, from 1777 it housed a barracks and a military school. At the beginning of the 20th century, the complex of buildings was torn down and the Municipal House, a gem of Czech Art Nouveau architecture, was erected in its place. The Municipal House is connected by a NeoGothic footbridge to the Powder Gate (Powder Tower), built after 1478 in the place of the dilapidated original

The square is surrounded by magnificent buildings that have witnessed numerous momentous historical events: royal wedding celebrations, the election of King Jiří of Poděbrady, as well as executions, among them that of twenty-seven Czech noblemen following the defeat of the Uprising of the Estates in 1621. The most significant monument in the square is the Old Town Hall, which after its establishment in 1338 became the centre of the Prague Old Town government. The building has undergone numerous architectural

modifications and today is formed by a block of houses that were gradually appended. The Old Town Hall’s core is the Gothic corner house dating from the end of the 13th century, to which a prismatic tower, today boasting a unique astronomical clock made circa 1410 by Mikuláš of Kadaň, was added. The centre of past events in the Old Town Hall was the council hall from the second half of the 15th century with a preserved girder ceiling adorned with lush Renaissance paintings. At the end of WW II, the Old Town Hall was shelled and caught fire. Hence, it had to undergo extensive repairs after the war. Other notable buildings on the Old Town Square are the Stone Bell House, dating from the 13th century; the Church of Our Lady Before Týn, constructed in the 14th century; the Hussite Saint Nicolas Church; and the Memorial to Master Jan Hus, designed by Ladislav Šaloun and built in 1915. From the Old Town Square, the Royal Route continues through the Little Square, which is dominated by a Renaissance fountain, to Karlova street, lined with houses of former Prague burghers and aristocrats’ palaces, whose mostly Baroque facades conceal the remains of older buildings. Situated between Karlova and Křižovnická streets is the extensive complex of the Klementinum. This erstwhile Jesuit college whose most

intriguing sections are the Astronomical Tower, the Baroque Library and the Mirror Chapel. Karlova street ends on Křižovnické square, where a Neo-Gothic memorial to Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, is located near the Francis of Assisi Church. The Royal Route then leads across the Charles Bridge to the other side of the river. The bridge starts at the Old Town Bridge Tower, one of the most beautiful Gothic gates in Europe. The Charles Bridge was built after 1357 in the immediate vicinity of the former Judith Bridge and despite multiple cases of serious damage and extensive repairs it has been virtually preserved in its original appearance. The Charles Bridge has 16 vaults and is adorned with 31, mostly Baroque, sculptures. It ends on the other side of the Vltava at the two Lesser Town Bridge Towers, interconnected by a Gothic gate, which serves as the entrance to Mostecká street, leading to the Lesser Town Square, which is surrounded by a number of protected historical buildings: the Kaiserstein, Smiřický, Sternberk Palaces, the Helikovský House, the Liechtenstein and Hartig Palaces. The square is dominated by the St. Nicolas Church, considered Prague’s most splendid Baroque building. From the Lesser Town Square, the Royal Route proceeds up Nerudova street to Prague Castle. One of the city’s most fascinating streets, it dates back to 1267. Most of the burghers’ houses, many of them bearing interesting signs, underwent Renaissance reconstruction following the devastating fire in 1541 and have late-Baroque or Classicist facades. On the other hand, when grand palaces were built in the Baroque era, the majority of the original buildings were demolished. The Royal Route once continued via Pohořelec, Loretto Square and Loretánská street, but in the 17th century the procession was redirected through a newly built street, Ke Hradu, leading to Hradčany Square.

What´s on in Prague 22nd Young Prague international music festival Between 4 and 15 September the 22nd edition of the Young Prague international music festival will be taking place in Prague and other cities in the Czech Republic. The organiser, the civic association Young Prague, aims to help promising fledgling classical music artists – instrumentalists, singers, chamber ensembles, conductors and composers. By affording them the opportunity to give concerts at an international level, it strives to ease the beginning of their artistic career and make it possible for them to establish friendships with young musicians from all over the world. Since 2006 the auspices of the event have been assumed by the Chairman of the Senate of the Czech Parliament. Last year, the Young Prague festival received from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs an honourable mention in recognition of activities contributing to building up friendly contacts between Japan and other countries. Born in 1870 in Brno, he studied architecture in Dresden and gained further experience during his three-year sojourn in the USA. Loos expressed his basic housing conception in his article “Architecture”: “A house must be liked by all. Unlike a work of art, which no one has to like. A work of art is engendered without any specific need. A house fulfils a certain need. A work of art strives to appeal to people

and get them out of their comfort zone. A house has to serve comfort. Humans like everything that provides comfort. They hate everything that strives to push them out of their acquired and secured position, and that they find annoying. New permanent displays at the National Technical 365 90 Museum dní The National Technical Museum in Prague has opened two new alluring permanent exhibitions: Chemistry Around Us and Measuring Time. Prague Fair The international folk festival, taking place from 27 to 31 August at the Ovocný trh (former Fruit Market) in the centre of Prague, is one of the most notable events of its kind in Europe. A Short Trip Outside Prague Tired of making your way through the Prague crowds? Would you like to see historic sites elsewhere, away from the city centre? If so, head east! On the outskirts of Prague, in the district of Vinoř, you can visit Ctěnice, a unique medieval chateau and homestead complex. The original fortress was established on a promontory enclosed by a moat. A Renaissance reconstruction converted the stronghold into an exquisite chateau, while later Baroque modifi-

365 90 dní cations resulted in new arcades and transformed the façade, the first floor and other parts of the building. A well-preserved arched bridge leads to the gate of Moravě the entrance tower. Adjacent to the chateau is a set of outhouses, with dětmi the most precious of them being a two-storey granary with a saddle roof. The complex includes an originally Baroque manor park, which has acquired a landscaped nature and is now adorned with a fruit-tree avenue and a stream. Both the buildings and the park are listed as cultural monuments. Visitors can lodge in the Ctěnice chateau hotel, which includes a café and restaurant. Today, the Ctěnice chateau is taken care of by the City of Prague Museum, which holds there art exhibitions and interactive programmes for adults and children. www . mhmp.cz area. Cyril and Methodius This year, we in the Czech Republic are commemorating the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the Christian missionaries Cyril (Constantin) and Methodius in Great Moravia. Upon the invitation of Prince Rostislav, the Byzantine-Greek brothers came here in the spring of 863 to evangelise his subjects, thus laying the foundations of the Christian church in the Slavonic state.

365 For the purpose of the mission, they devised the Glagolitic alphabet, suited to match the specific features of the Slavonic language to be used for Slavonic manuscripts. They translated the Bible into the language now known as Old Church Slavonic. The brothers also wrote the first Slavonic Civil Code, which was used in Great Moravia. In 867 Cyril and Methodius, accompanied by their pupils, visited Rome to ask the Pope to approve the use of Old Church Slavonic as the liturgical language. The pontiff duly granted his consent. In Rome, Cyril got seriously ill, entered a monastery and soon died (869). Despite significant complications and political intrigues, Methodius continued his work among the Slavs on his own. He died in Great Moravia at the age of 72.

Velehrad – A Popular Czech Pilgrimage Place Velehrad, a village situated near Uherské Hradiště, Moravia, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. Traditionally, it has been considered the capital of the Slavonic state of Great Moravia. The most significant local historical monument is the oldest Moravian Cistercian Abbey, founded in the 13th century by Margrave Vladislav Jindřich, part of which is the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption and Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The church acquired its current appearance following extensive reconstructions at the turn of the 18th century, yet it has maintained its Romanesque-Gothic character. In 1985 Pope John Paul II granted the basilica the Golden Rose, which is conferred as a token of reverence or affection upon great figures, royalty, churches, cities and governments in recognition of their loyalty to the Holy See.

Every 5 July, Velehrad is the destination of the National Pilgrimage marking the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Day, a national holiday, and is visited by pilgrims from the Czech Republic and other European countries.

Public transport information ◗ There are three underground (metro) lines operating in Prague – green (A), yellow (B) and red (C). The metro system interconnects all the important places around the city, with tram and bus connections to destinations where the metro does not reach. The public transport network is reliable and covers the city thoroughly. The metro operates daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. After midnight, public transport is ensured by night tram and bus lines.
