Hungary, the land of healing waters

Why Hungary? text Aranka Szabó » photos Hungarian Tourism Plc.

Without water we’re nothing. We and the world around us are made of it, we drink it, get physically and spiritually cleansed and healed by it, and we love splashing around in it. The waters of Hungary have another remarkable quality though; they don’t only make life possible, but also make life better. The country is situated more or less in the geometrical centre of Europe (and of the world, we sometimes like to think) in the embrace of the Carpathians. Due to the favourable geometrical qualities of the Carpathian Basin, the Earth’s crust is an average 10 km thinner here than elsewhere,

if you dig a well in any corner of the country, it really is likely you’ll find thermal water. No wonder that whoever inhabited the land in the past 2000 years; they all loved, respected, and used the waters. First it was the Romans to get a taste of it. After conquering Pannonia province, which included what’s now called Transdanubia, they not only left legions, roads and temples behind, but the first bath houses and the legacy of ‘Salus per Aquem’ (health by water) that gave us the acronym, spa. With the Ottoman invasion of Hungary in the 15th century came a new

wave of bathing culture. Turkish hammams didn’t only ooze a unique architectural beauty, but also functioned as health and entertainment centres. 500 years later, the Turkish baths of Hungary offer you the chance of time travel, and indulgence galore. When all the therapeutic features of Hungary’s greatest national treasure were known, world-renowned baths and spas popped up all around the country. In the early 1930s, Budapest, as the capital with the most healing thermal water springs in the world, was awarded the title ‘Spa City’.

Radiation from the sun speeds up the natural ageing process of the skin and is responsible for the development of fine and rough wrinkles and for the sagging of the skin. Plastic surgery treatments do not renew the surface of the skin, this task falls to the aesthetic dermatologist. One of Europe’s top 5 qualified medical staffs operate in Hungary with the very latest cosmetics industry equipment. Long-established treatments such as dermal filling to smooth away wrinkles are conducted using materials that

comply with the highest industry standards. The extremely wide range of equipment available represents an effective solution to many problems considered impossible to tackle until now. Five different laser technologies, broad spectrum and infrared light sources, as well as radio frequency and ultrasound instruments are available for skin rejuvenation and f irming procedures, the treatment of spider and varicose veins, the removal of pigmentation spots and unsightly skin growths, depilation and to end cellulite problems. The Neodymium-YAG laser allows unsightly aneurisms to be removed with great precision from the face and neckline, and spider veins to be removed from the lower leg, sometimes with only a single treatment. The BBL light source, the latest generation of IPL (intense pulsed light) instruments, represents a costeffective solution to aesthetic demands. The SkinTyte-II apparatus, ClearScan Alexandrite

After all, many of us long to acquire the sort of beautiful body that, although requiring us to withdraw from the world’s gaze for a week, allows us to return home fully rejuvenated.

spend on one IVF cycle in the UK you can have 2 cycles at a fertility clinic in Budapest. This of course means double chances of getting pregnant. Other than saving money you also need to consider the fact that in the UK maximum two embryos can be transferred back in an IVF cycle, but many couples would have better chances with more embryos. In Hungary up to four embryos can be transferred which can also increase the chances of pregnancy. In the Hungarian IVF clinics all the circumstances are carefully examined, then a fertility specialist will make a joint decision with the patients about the ideal number of embryos being transferred back. After your consultation with a fertility specialist, if all the required test results are ready before leaving Hungary, you can buy the medication in Budapest. You can save money by IVF medication, as British pharmacies are able to dispense medication prescribed by a doctor registered in any European Union member state. In addition, there is no age limit

by the Hungarian law, even single women can have fertility treatments, and all sperm donors are anonymous. There is no waiting list for IVF. Most of the patients have the first initial consultation with the fertility specialist within a month of first contact.

Whatever tickles your fancy when it comes to entertainment, Budapest has it all. From the museums to dance clubs that close way into the next day and everything in between is yours to find, just leave the

main roads behind. Head to the Kazinczy street area for a pub crawl that takes you from abandoned courtyards turned boozing hotspots to hip wine bars; or get more cultured at the Opera or the Palace of Arts. And did you know that Budapest is home to the best club in the world? Last but not least Budapest has become one of the leading destinations of medical tourism in Europe. It’s not only the price of services that’s so appealing in the city, but also the outstanding quality of these services. Living it up at Lake Balaton

The Hungarian sea text Aranka Szabó » photos Hungarian Tourism Plc.

Lake Balaton is the source of well-being in itself, but if you take a look at what’s awaiting around the lake, your thirst for health and recreation will be amply satisfied.

Lake Balaton is a year-round must visit destination in Hungary. Smooth, silky waters and wonderful wines, sand and surf, fishing and frolicking, splashing and sailing, concerts and partying and pedalboating, beach volleyball and biking, elegant castles and sleepy villages, beautiful landscapes and crystal clear air, Lake Balaton has it all. Whether you want to cycle around Balaton (the bike

route around the lake is 206 km!) or just join in the ride along the way, you’ll be in for a treat. Springs and castles, abandoned ruins and spectacular beaches, flowery villages and 18-hole golf courses, harbours and lavender fields will spice up the ride. Let’s slow down, you say? There are plenty of beautiful hiking trails, taking you through gentle slopes and volcanic mountains. Fancy staying at a castle hotel, or

mixing wine and wellness? There are specialised hotels around the lake catering for your special needs. Enjoy special interest trips such as Nordic walking tours, wine cellar visits, wine dinners, horse riding programs and castle tours. Pay attention to your relaxation needs too, and enjoy the hotel’s well-equipped spa or stretch your limits at yoga and self-development classes. «

The northern peaks

Many of Hungary`s towns not only have their own medicinal spas but they are also packed with cultural attractions. From the irresistible romance of rolling hills overlooking wineyards, the Hungarian Alps, each spa resort has its cultural significance.

The hills (locals call them mountains, so be polite) that roll across the north of Hungary are home to the country’s highest peak, forests riddled with hiking trails, vast cave complexes, lakes, waterfalls and the volcanic mount of Tokaj, to name just a few natural treasures. Hike the Mátra mountain range, where you can summit Hungary’s highest peak, Kékestető, which is really a walk in the park at 1,014m high. Further east you’ll find the beautiful Bükk mountains, with woody trails and waterfalls, country palaces and gardens. Eger has thermal baths, historic buildings and

wonderful red wines. One of the most delightful reminders of the Turkish occupation in the city is the Turkish bath. The 31ºC medicinal water of the bath has the highest radon content in Hungary. The soothing halflight, the glimmering, dancing surface of the water, and the modern massage and mud treatments will make your ha mma m exper ience tr uly extraordinary. Egerszalók is situated in a valley between the Bükk and Mátra hills, making it a picturesque place to visit. The real gem of the village is the thermal bath complex. Here the hot waters from two ancient

thermal springs have been flowing out of the side of a hill for ages, leaving behind beautiful mineral formations that cascade down the hill like a frozen waterfall. Bathers can soak in the hot waters below the beautiful mineral formations, enjoying the natural setting. Mezőkövesd is known as a center of Matyó folk art. The patterns and colors are discovered by the design and fashion world, dresses of film and sports stars are decorated by Matyó floral themes. The Zsory Bath is located in the vicinity of the National Park Bükk and Lake Tisza. The thermal water is rich in sulfur sulfides,

The endless horizon

Eastern Hungary text Aranka Szabó » photos Hungarian Tourism Plc.

The flattest and quietest land of Hungary, the Great Plains. Rivers run through it, national parks divide it, Hungarian cowboys and herds of animals roam it, and spas fill it with life. This is the land where life is hassle-free and where horizons are endless. Although the Great Plains are the driest and sunniest part of the country, there are plenty of spa cities here where you can soak, splash, and heal.

Debrecen » the largest city of

Eastern Hungary is not only home to the second busiest airport of the country, but is also one of the religious and educational centres

of Hungary. The Medical School of the University of Debrecen now has 22 departments of basic sciences and 25 clinical departments specialising in various fields, many of these fields can boast about worldclass achievements. Some malignant blood disorders can now be cured by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; a new, innovative method allows for the cure of diseases caused by high blood pressure that are unresponsive to medication; the renewed Cornea Bank allows for keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) procedures of the highest standard at the

Ophthalmology Clinic; a new biological therapy helps with the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases and psoriasis. The Medical School of the University of Debrecen is accredited by many international medical associations. In the heart of the Great Forest of Debrecen, is a spa complex that’s open all-yearround with an open-air pool with medicinal waters, a contrast bath and steam chambers in a domed pool hall. And where is the fun in that? In the Mediterranean Pleasure Baths! Under a massive glass dome there is an abundance of tropical plants and a water paradise full of adventures.

Aquaticum Thermal & Wellness Hotel**** In our hotel the 56 double rooms and 40 comfortable apartments awaits the guests. Each room features a balcony, bathroom with tub or shower, TV, pay-tv, movie channel, WI-FI, Internet connection, minibar, room safe and hair-dryer. The Bath Complex of Hajdu szoboszlo is the largest spa in Europe. 40 pools of 16,000 m2 water surface, 9 giant slides, a Mediterranean beach with palm trees, chill lounges and sport courts provide recuperation, relaxation and fun all year round. The combined effects of the medicinal water, 40 different therapies and other healing factors may help with a patients’ full recovery. The water is also effective in treating chronic skin inflammations, such as eczema and psoriasis and in curing locomotor disorders, especially various kinds of rheumatics

and chronic gynaecological infections, and in the aftercare of paralysis and injuries. 90% of the patients who follow doctors’ orders show a quick recovery; that means tens of thousands of healed patients through the decades. Lying on 8,5 hectars, the Gyula Castle Spa has everything you can imagine. When you soak in the brownish mineralrich medicinal water that heals your joints and painful muscles, admire the panorama of colourful flowers and ancient trees in the surrounding park. The medicinal water of Anna Bath in sunny Szeged contains alkali-hydrogen-

carbonic which may sound way too chemical, but in fact is really effective in treating rheumatics or joint problems. Aquapolis Szeged is a real water city: 4400 m2 of water paradise, 13 slides, kid’s pools, wellness pools, a medical center, space for sports of all kinds and the opportunity for endless fun and relaxation. Due to the chemical com position and the physical and biological effects of the water, the water cure is a natural remedy for a number of ailments. The healing water is effective in curing locomotor disorders, especially various kinds of

rheumatics, and in the aftercare of paralysis and injuries. The water also facilitates recovery from chronic gynecological infections. Thanks to the hormone contents of the water, infertile women often report conception following repeated water cures. The water is also effective in treating chronic skin inflam mat io ns, such as eczema and psoriasis. 90% of the patients who follow doctors’ orders show a quick recovery; that means tens of thousands of healed patients through the decades. The majority of the popula tion will have experienced lower back pain at least once or twice before reaching middle age. Of the 40 treatments available in the spa, underwater weight bath, a Hungarian invention, is one of the most effective in this area.

Hunguest Hotel Béke**** Hajdúszoboszló Following the reconstruction, the own spa of the hotel awaits its guest with a new pool with medicinal water, a swimming pool, a fun pool and a pool for children. The popular open air medicinal pool and the classic swimming pool operated in the peak season have also been renewed. “Sauna World” is a novelty.

Fresh air, free of pollen, exhaust and dust, in the middle of a town? The cave system carved out of the limestone by water under Tapolca was discovered in 1902, and now you can take a pleasant boat ride underground on the crystal clear water. There’s also a spacious, dry passage system, where the air has been known to heal or at least speed recovery from whooping cough,

asthma and other respiratory ailments, so the area was designated a “medicinal cave” in 1981. The constant temperature (14-16ºC), the high carbon-dioxide content of the air and the perfect silence aren’t just good for your lungs, they’re good for your soul!

Healing gas with a buzz »

Have you ever been near a mofetta? It may sound like the name of a mythical monster, it is in fact a dry bath employing volcanic gas discharge. In Mátraderecske, only 30 kms from Eger, the carbon-dioxide that rises from 1,000 metres underground is used in the rehabilitation of heart and angiological diseases, and is recommended for the treatment

of high blood pressure, circulatory diseases, motorical disorders, gynecological diseases and skin problems. The course of the treatment includes 15 sessions of sitting in and inhaling the healing gas, overseen by highly qualified specialists. Mecca for patients suffering from angiopathy: unique medical treatment system (carbonic acid gas bath) considered as HUNGARICUM is applied to cure patients suffering from peripheral angiopathy in the Clinic of Kapuvár. This therapy helps you to keep away the disease (arteriostenosis) as well as enhance wellbeing, while it is also highly recommended for stress relief and rejuvenation of the exhausted managers

(a small town on the SlovenianHungarian border) was built in the intersection of three energy lines of the Earth. Ancient civilizations built their most sacred buildings along St George lines (or dragon currents in eastern cultures), and now St George Energy Park follows the example of Stonehenge, Macchu Picchu

Conveniently enough, the Energy Park is situated in the park of the Lenti Thermal Spa, so after soaking in the healing waters, you can take a stroll and soak up the positive vibes. The purpose of this method is to stretch the spine by means of the buoyancy of the thermal water and to restore the discs to their original position. The weight bath introduced

by Dr Károly Moll in Hévíz is among the best known and most effective methods of treatment for spinal damage.

The mud pack of Hévíz » The

bottom of Lake Hévíz is covered with thick layers of peat. (When it’s brought to the surface and mixed with mud, the magical mud pack of Hévíz is done.) The medicinal water contains high concentration of all important chemicals -80% inorganic, 20% organic - the body needs, thereby multiplying the effectiveness of the mud. The hot mud (between 38 and 42 ºC) covers specific parts or all of your body for 20 minutes, and you’ll emerge

from the treatment rejuvenated and with a renewed lust for life.

Physiotherapy   » Phys io t he

rapy plays an important role in the rehabilitation of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal injuries. Through a range of movements (either in thermal water or on land), physiotherapy promotes correct posture, mobility and functional ability. For successful physiotherapy, patients should plan for a longer period of treatment. Since physiotherapists are trained at Hungarian universities for four years, you can rest assured that your rehabilitation will be in good hands. «

Tips and advice for your stay in Hungary Hungary has more medicinal spas than anywhere in Europe, so it is worth combining your holiday with a relaxing bathing cure. But before you decide to take the plunge, here is some more interesting information on medicinal and thermal springs: A medicinal spa uses water rich in minerals that medical tests clearly show has health benefits. Thermal water is any naturally occurring spring that emerge at a temperature exceeding 30°C. And what is balneotherapy? Balneotherapy is the treatment of a medical condition with water from a medicinal spring – particularly water with high concentrations of dissolved minerals and sediment. Balneotherapy is combined with physiotherapy, electrotherapy and therapeutic massage. This is complemented by related treatments, including drinking cures and inhalation.

ideally suited to the treatment of degenerative joint conditions and skin complaints. Water rich in dissolved carbon dioxide is beneficial to patients with heart conditions and those with peripheral circulatory problems. Salty water is recommended for women with gynaecological complaints and those with bladder infections and springs containing radon have a pain-killing effect.

Warning – Bathing times and recommended treatment periods » It is extreme-

ly important to keep to the bathing times given, which should be increased gradually from 15 minutes to a maximum of 45 minutes at a time. A serious course of treatment should last at least two weeks. Prevention is also an increasingly important aspect of maintaining good health so wellness packages should be tailored to particular problem areas just like rehabilitative programmes are. Preventative measures also provide good foundations for a healthy way of life, but taking the time to recharge the batteries and overcome stress is also a top priority.
