Scottish Castles • You’ll find over 300 castles in Aberdeen City and Shire, and it’s easy to see how many of these could have helped inspire the fictional DunBroch Castle seen in Brave. • Admire the fairytale Craigievar Castle, near Alford, a pretty pinkish building topped with tiny turrets, said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s famous castle.

Ancient Scotland • Aberdeen City and Shire boasts a fascinating past, with visible marks left by its ancient inhabitants to explore. The 9 ft tall Lang Stane rests in the middle of Aberdeen city centre and you can observe the remains of an ancient hill fort on the summit of the Mither Tap on Bennachie. Or why not visit the Muir of Dinnet NNR and the ornate ninth century Kinord Stone?

05

Don’t miss…

• If you’re inspired by the film and want to see a real life stone circle, head to Easter Aquhorthies Stone Circle, which lies 1 mile west of Inverurie. These mysterious 4,000 year old stones are thought to be one of the earliest circles in Aberdeenshire.

Q Aikey Brae Stone Circle – this ancient

stone circle is over 4,000 years old. Q Scotland’s Castle Trail – visit 17 amazing

historic properties.

Wildlife & Nature • Talk a wander through Glen Tanar Estate, which is famed for its magnificent Caledonian Pinewoods. There is an easy waymarked circuit, which makes exploring easy. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels and capercaillies. • Watch and listen for some fantastic wildlife. Look out for golden eagles and ptarmigans on higher ground around Loch Muick on the Balmoral Estate, and listen out for the distinctive roar of red deer during rutting season in the autumn. It’s a truly unforgettable sound.

04

• See guillemots, puffins, peregrine falcons, seals and dolphins along the coast. Where better to spot a bottlenose dolphin than from the clifftop fortress of Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven?

Q The River Dee – one of Britain’s top

four salmon rivers.

Quality Award Where a Quality Assurance award has been included on an entry, the business has been graded by VisitScotland and provides assurances on quality and standards. The scheme is explained on page 17 of this guide.

The listings within this guide have been split into the following sections: • Places to Visit • Leisure Activities • Shopping • Food & Drink • Tours • Transport Businesses within these sections are listed in alphabetical order by business location, then by business name. Each entry has a map reference (see example) relating to the maps which appear on pages 48-49 of this guide. The maps are helpful if you don’t know where a particular location is in relation to the area that interests you. The majority of entries will have a postcode which can be used to pin point exact location. Where businesses are listed as being ‘By’ a town or village it is wise to check the exact location with the operator before making your journey. Some listings have a distance beside the location; this indicates the approximate road distance in miles from the main location. These mileages are voluntarily provided by the businesses themselves. Assistance Dogs The new Equality Act 2010 protects anybody who has or has had a disability and people who experience discrimination because they are linked or associated with a disabled person. In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly states that to refuse admission to a registered assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and 3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is

We have encouraged all our business customers to use the assistance dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make it clear in a statement that they welcome all assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check with each establishment prior to booking.

v Hearing Loop Induction loop and infrared systems help people with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing the effect of background noise. When a building has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you will usually find this mentioned in their adverts, newsletters and at the entrance to the building. Informative signs and symbols should be displayed such as the loop sign above, it is always worth asking if it is not obvious.
