Beyond the city Thar a bhaile

Did you know? Elderslie, in Renfrewshire is celebrated as the birthplace of William Wallace. The site is marked by a memorial erected in 1912. 01

Less than an hour from Glasgow, you can discover lush valleys, magnificent estates, historical attractions and country parks. Explore two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and discover ancient Roman stories and what working life was like in the 1700s. Inverclyde • Visit the new Beacon Arts Centre where you can enjoy theatre and art productions in a stunning new building in Greenock. • The McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock is a wonderful Victorian museum which tells the story of Inverclyde’s maritime history and of the town’s famous son, James Watt, who made the steam engine viable.

East Dunbartonshire • Get an insight into the limits of Roman conquest in Britain, demonstrated by parts of the Antonine Wall at Bearsden, one of the area’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

• Milngavie’s Mugdock Country Park has some great short walks, two ruined castles and a host of activities from horse riding and orienteering through to archery and golf.

Renfrewshire

North Lanarkshire

• Paisley Museum has the finest collection of Paisley Shawls in the world, which is a Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland.

• Summerlee, the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, is located on the site of a 19th century ironworks in Coatbridge, where you can take a ride on Scotland’s only electric tramway and venture deep underground in a recreated mine. • Try out some sailing, kayaking or rowing on the water at Strathclyde Country Park or head into Scotland’s first theme park, M&Ds, for thrilling rollercoaster rides and crazy golf.

• The magnificent Paisley Abbey dates back to 1163 and was reputedly the site where William Wallace was educated.

South Lanarkshire • Spend a day at James Hamilton Heritage Park in East Kilbride and take a taster watersport session on the beautiful 16 acre loch, or visit the adventure playgrounds before heading to the bird sanctuary.

Beyond the city • Explore the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre to learn more about Scotland’s most famous explorer and missionary, on the bicentenary of his birth here in 1813. This Grade A-listed tenement tells of Livingstone’s explorations in Africa and is home to a wide range of his personal belongings.

East Renfrewshire • Rouken Glen Park is a unique space as it contains one of the most important geological sites in the country – the Orchard Beds. • Follow one of three routes of the Barrhead Heritage Trail to discover 25 sites from churches to inns, railway stations to football grounds.

Highlights Learn more about the industrial past of North Lanarkshire at the Motherwell Heritage Centre. Enjoy an enlightening day out, south east of the city, at the New Lanark World Heritage Site. Visit Scotland’s largest 13th century castle, Bothwell, dramatically set beside the winding River Clyde. The West Highland Way starts in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Teárlach rennie Mac an Tóisich Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) is one of Glasgow’s most famous sons; an architect, designer and artist with an influential and distinctive style, who has left a legacy of remarkable buildings and artwork across the city. The Gla sgow School of Art

• The Glasgow School of Art became the centre of the art nouveau style in Scotland and a group known as ‘the Four’ led the development of the ‘Glasgow Style’ – Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Herbert MacNair and sisters, Margaret and Frances MacDonald. • The school is considered Mackintosh’s greatest achievement. M TTours are available here seven days a week so you can see the recent rrefurbishment which has brought tthe interiors and studios back to ttheir original glory. the Mackintosh Tower in • Climb C TThe Lighthouse for incredible views oout over the city. The former Glasgow Herald newspaper offices G aare now a centre devoted to aarchitecture and design. • House for an Art Lover, in Bellahouston Park, was inspired by Mackintosh’s portfolio of drawings submitted as a competition entry to a German design magazine in 1901. This beautiful house was built nearly 100 years after the designs were first created. • At the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Art Gallery is the Mackintosh House. The home Mackintosh shared with his wife at 6 Florentine Terrace has been meticulously reassembled at this site. • The Scotland Street School Museum was Mackintosh’s last major commission. Take a free guided tour and enjoy the impressive leaded glass towers and tiled entrance hall.

Highlights Pick up a Mackintosh Trail Ticket, which allows unlimited travel on bus or underground services and entry to participating attractions. Stop for a bite to eat in the Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street. Every aspect of these recreated tearooms was designed by Mackintosh, so you can enjoy afternoon tea just as they did 100 years ago.

Did you know? You can see a pedigree fold of Highland cattle at Pollok Country Park, where they have been bred since 1830.

Translating from Gaelic as the ‘dear green place’, Glasgow is home to an astounding amount of beautiful parks and gardens where you can enjoy quiet walks and fascinating attractions. • The Clyde Valley is also full of outdoor spaces where you can embrace the Year of Natural Scotland, enjoy exciting activities and watch for wildlife.

• Discover the Hidden Gardens, an unused site in Glasgow’s Southside which was transformed into a tranquil haven. See the integrated artworks which include a series of poems.

• Soak up the Victorian grandeur at the magnificent Kelvingrove Park, on the banks of the River Kelvin. It was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and was the first purposely designed and constructed park in Scotland.

• Spend time exploring the National Trust for Scotland’s Greenbank Garden in Clarkston. A feast for the senses during any season, you can see more than 3,700 different plants.

• Don’t miss the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens on Glasgow Green. Enjoy the serenity by the collection of tropical plants.

• The Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve takes in an amazing six natural woodlands including the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve.

The natural side • Dams to Darnley is Scotland’s newest country park which brings together fascinating history, wildlife, geology and landscapes into an area of 1,350 acres.

• Hire equipment and head out onto the open water sailing or kayaking at Clyde Muirshiel, Scotland’s largest regional park.

• Watch graceful birds and listen for them singing at the RSPB Nature Reserve at Lochwinnoch, one of the few wetlands left in west Scotland. You may be able to spot whooper swans, wigeons and great crested grebes. A Highl and cow Pollok C at ountry P ark

Highlights Wander along the river walkway in Kelvingrove Park, home to a diverse range of wildlife, take in the striking views and head into the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Inspirational Landscapes

• Celtic Connections brings the city alive with three weeks of contemporary and traditional Celtic-influenced music in its most diverse forms in January.

• Queen’s Park in Glasgow offers stunning views on a clear day out to the Campsie Fells and Ben Lomond. It was also the site of the 16th century Battle of Langside.

• Find out if you can master skills from days gone by at the 18th century handloom weaver’s cottage in Kilbarchan, which houses the last of 800 looms from the 1830s. Spinning wheels and a loom are available for the whole family to try. • This year Paisley will host the Royal National Mod, an eight-day celebration of Gaelic culture and heritage from 11-19 October.

Wildlife & Nature • See the largest collection of birds of prey in Scotland at World of Wings in Cumbernauld, where you can get close to the birds, take a falconry course or watch a flying display. • Drumbreck Marsh is a wetland by the River Kelvin which is home to birds including lapwings, skylarks and rare water rails.
