Orkney? What do you imagine of
Is it the wide open vistas under startling northern light, wildlife almost close enough to touch, astounding archaeological treasures, delicious island produce and handmade crafts or, simply, perfect peace and tranquillity? Whatever you imagine, you will find so much more.
Scattered off the north east coast of Scotland, there are over 70 islands and skerries in the archipelago, 20 of which are inhabited. The largest of these measures only 25 miles across and accommodates the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. Kirkwall is dominated by the magnificent Romanesque cathedral dedicated to St Magnus, while Stromness is a picturesque fishing town set against the stunning backdrop of the hills that dominate the island of Hoy.

Living in relative harmony with nature, much of Orkney’s green, fertile land is ideally suited for the farming and production of its rich larder of beef, lamb, cheese, milk, confectionery, cereals, whisky and ale. That same fertile land has, for centuries, concealed an archaeological heritage that is now being uncovered and is exposing a new and fascinating insight into our prehistoric ancestors.

DISTANT
Visiting Orkney’s past is very much like immersing yourself in a good book – each chapter reveals a little more of the story, captivating your imagination and urging you on to find out more. Yet the best thing about this particular story is that it is still being uncovered, bit by bit, keeping the intrigue alive and tempting you back, year after year. Skara Brae, Sandwick
Over the centuries many people have settled in Orkney – among them the Norsemen. They were great storytellers and have gifted us a detailed account of their part in our history in the Orkneyinga Saga. Hundreds of years of Norse rule have left us with much that shapes our lives today, most iconic of which is the splendid cathedral built in memory of the most famous of these Norsemen, St Magnus. Others, of course, have also left their mark, including invaders, traders and shipwrecked sailors. Yet the inhabitants that are currently capturing the imagination of the entire world are the Neolithics. Recent excavations at the Ness of Brodgar have turned history on its head, dispelling previous perceptions of the British Neolithic period. Not only have the finds on the site demonstrated that these early people were using more advanced building techniques than previously thought, but they have also shown that Orkney, at this time, was a hugely important religious centre – perhaps a place of pilgrimage or a tribal meeting place.
“The Ness of Brodgar is an archaeologist’s dream site, with amazing finds and preservation that allows it to be appreciated not just by archaeologists, but also by thousands of visitors” Nick Card Senior Projects Manager, Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) 6

Well before this exciting discovery, Orkney was already well known for being home to some of the best preserved prehistoric settlements in Europe, which led to the Heart of Neolithic Orkney being granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1999. The award covers the large chambered tomb at Maeshowe, the two stone circles (Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness), the prehistoric village of Skara Brae, and some less well known and yet to be uncovered sites in the area. Orkney’s prehistoric sites extend well beyond those surrounding Brodgar. For example, in the Northern Isles, the island of Rousay is known as the ‘Egypt of the North’, due to its high concentration of well-preserved monuments, while in the south, the 5,000-year-old Tomb of the Eagles, discovered by chance in the 1950s, contained an important collection of bones and artefacts.

Vikings
After the
After hundreds of years of Norse rule, Orkney was given to Scotland as part of a marriage dowry by Christian I of Denmark in 1468 to King James III. It was a redeemable pledge which would never be recovered and, gradually, the Norwegian influence slipped away. A sea of change followed for both Orkney and Shetland when, in 1564, Mary Queen of Scots passed the Orkney and Shetland estates to her half-brother, Robert Stewart. The Stewart family displayed an extravagant lifestyle – still evident today in the ruins of the elaborate palaces of Kirkwall and Birsay. They amassed debt, created feuds and oppressed the Orkney people. This particular period in Orkney’s history came to an abrupt end when both Robert and his son Patrick were convicted of treason. In much more recent history, the natural harbour of Scapa Flow provided an ideal naval base for the allied fleet in both World Wars. War relics and the poignant reminders of the sacrifices made are evident throughout Orkney. In particular, the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm was crafted by Italian prisoners of war who laboured on the building of the Churchill Barriers in World War II. On the island of Hoy, Lyness Museum not only exhibits an extensive array of artefacts but also provides a detailed account of the activities and tragic events of both wars.
While many people have put down roots in Orkney, others have left the island, travelling and settling all over the world. Many young men were recruited by the Hudson’s Bay Company and settled in Canada. The most famous of these was undoubtedly the Arctic explorer, John Rae. Orphir-born Rae went to Canada as a surgeon. In his time there, living and working closely with the Inuit people, John Rae developed a keen interest and aptitude for exploration, which resulted in his discovery of the North West Passage. Orkney celebrates John Rae’s 200th birthday in 2013 with a series of exhibitions and events across the islands. Today, people choose to go to explore other parts of the world or experience a different way of life, while in the 18th and 19th centuries many Orcadian families, suffering hardship and deprivation, left the islands to seek a living elsewhere. Whatever the circumstances, Orkney is in the blood of countless immigrants and their descendants, many of whom choose to return for a visit or discover their roots for the very first time.
"Orkney’s history is not something that exists only in schoolbooks or the thoughts of academics. Traces are everywhere - an intricate tapestry of events stitched into the very fabric of the islands themselves. Sigurd Towrie www.orkneyjar.com

Orkney is celebrating its scenery and unique natural heritage this year through 2013 Natural Scotland. And where better to hold such a celebration? Primula Scotica
In spring and summer, the island meadows and clifftops are a garden of wildflowers. Seabirds throng the coastline, while, inland, there is a rich array of moorland birds. In spring and autumn, rare migrating breeds take a break in Orkney on their long journey between the cold Arctic and warmer climates. The beaches are a paradise for shell seekers and spotting sea creatures, while the pounding sea has created magnificent archways and blow holes around the coast. Grey and common seals are commonplace around the islands and, further out to sea, you can often spy porpoises, dolphins and whales.
“Orkney is a spectacular place to see the natural world at any time of the year, from the noisy spring breeding season to large concentrations of wintering birds, from the humble rock pools to the heights of Hoy.”.
Each season brings a new wildlife wonder to Orkney. The following are just some of the highlights:
Andy Knight Orkney RSPB Reserves Manager
Spring Spring sees a flurry of activity, with birds beginning their courtship and returning to their nesting grounds. As leaves begin to shoot, moths emerge from their cocoons and primroses and spring squill spring to life. In the wetlands and on the moors, look out for the wading birds, ducks, skylarks, meadow pipits, red-throated divers, curlews, lapwings, hen harriers and great skuas. Nesting around the coast are fulmars, black guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, peregrines and puffins. As the sound of the birds intensifies, so does the sight of wildflowers with magnificent displays of thrift, spring squill and sea campion along the clifftops.
Summer The hive of activity continues into the summer, with the birds busy rearing their chicks. Lapwings, shelduck, curlews and snipe are just some of the species frequenting the wetland, while hen harriers and merlins are out hunting on the moorland. Short-eared owls, reed buntings, twites and stonechats are spotted near the coastal paths, while the cliff faces throng with noisy seabirds feeding their young. Wildflowers flourish during the summer months, particularly on the island of Hoy, where there are three species of heather, seven species of orchid, cotton grass, ragged robin, sundew, yellow rattle and St John’s wort. The great yellow bumblebee appreciates Orkney’s wild garden and is very much at home among the red clover and arable weeds. Guillemots

Nature’s Diary In May, Orkney will hold its first Nature Festival – a nine-day event that will celebrate the very best of Orkney’s wildlife and offer visitors a truly memorable week of exploration all around the isles. Whether it’s birds, bees, Scottish primrose or seals – or just being in spectacular spots – the week will have something for everyone. All of Orkney’s wealth of wildlife is on offer, combined with visits to seabird colonies via land and sea, a banquet of local sustainable food, a wildlife photography exhibition, excursions to many of Orkney’s uninhabited islands, and a unique mix of expertly-guided walks and talks.
Orkney’s natural world is precious, so we protect it well, while keeping it as accessible as possible to our visitors. The West Mainland and north of Hoy is designated a National Scenic Area We have 30 sites of Special Scientific Interest The RSPB is a major land manager in Orkney with 13 RSPB reserves

An exciting time when almost any autumn migrants could appear, including redwings, siskins, brambling, flocks of pink-footed and greylag geese. Wintering water birds include long-tailed ducks, divers, shags, Slavonian grebes and black guillemots. Grey seals pup around the coast and, on calm days, there are often sightings of whales, porpoises and dolphins migrating to warmer waters. The autumnal colours of deer grass and rowan berries appear on the moor.

Winter Wildfowl such as winter-plumaged Slavonian grebes, teal and wigeon can be seen around the lochs of Stenness and Harray. Inland, twites, linnets, skylarks, reed bunting, red-throated, black-throated and great northern divers can still be spotted, while on the shoreline, the wading turnstones, purple sandpipers and ringed plovers see out the winter in Orkney. On the hillsides of Hoy, mountain hares are easily spotted with their white winter coat.

Perfectly positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, nature’s energy in and around Orkney is abundant. Throughout the centuries, islanders have appreciated this resource and taken advantage of both wind and water.

Traditionally, for food production, watermills were common throughout the islands. Today, you can see the one remaining horizontal watermill at Dounby. Click Mill was built in 1823, yet evidence of a much earlier waterwheel chamber found at Bu in Orphir suggests that these were in use as early as the 12th century. Boardhouse Mill in Birsay is a fine example of a working watermill, grinding the rare form of barley, bere, into beremeal. Built in 1873, the mill has a more modern vertical wheel.

“Orkney is the birthplace of the marine renewables industry: there are more wave and tidal energy machines being tested here than at any other single site in the world.” Neil Kermode, Managing Director, EMEC
The islands started exploring renewable energy in the 1950s, when a turbine was erected at Costa Head in Evie. The next venture into wind energy was the erection of the world’s largest wind turbine on Burgar Hill. As technology has progressed, more efficient turbines have been erected throughout the islands. Today, Orkney is at the very centre of marine renewables. The strong wave and tidal conditions of Orkney are home to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), where some of the world’s most innovative marine energy devices are being tested, and novel environmental research is being carried out to aid the development of this exciting new industry.
To support these developments, new piers are being built at Lyness, Stromness and Hatston in Kirkwall. When complete, the Kirkwall quay will be the longest and deepest in Scotland, which will allow larger vessels than ever before to berth alongside. Orkney Islands Council are currently looking at the possibility of installing tidal turbines in the Churchill Barriers, which they have recently acquired from the Ministry of Defence. Always mindful of the heritage and beauty of the islands, all these ground-breaking developments are considered with great sensitivity to the surrounding environment.

East Mainland The fairly low-lying parishes of St Andrew’s, Holm and Deerness are perfect for walking. Coastal routes lead from fine sandy beaches to magnificent cliffs. The famous Churchill Barriers, which were built to seal off the eastern approach to Scapa Flow during World War II, join the little islands of Lamb Holm – home of the beautiful Italian Chapel – and Glimps Holm, and the larger islands of Burray and South Ronaldsay to St Mary’s on the East Mainland. The East Mainland and adjoining islands are dotted with fine eateries, visitor centres, art galleries, craft workshops and historic and archaeological sites, making it a pleasure to explore.
St Magnus Cathedral was founded in 1137 and is one of the oldest cathedrals still in use in Scotland Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre’s collection includes fossils that are 350 million years old! The Italian Chapel, built by prisoners of war labouring on the Churchill Barriers, is known as ‘The Miracle of Camp 60’ Binscarth Wood, near Finstown, is Orkney’s largest woodland area with a walk past Wasdale Loch Ward Hill is the highest point on the Orkney Mainland at 268 metres with views to Scapa Flow, Hoy, Stromness and the West Mainland

West Mainland Home to Maeshowe, the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar, the Ness of Brodgar and Skara Brae, the area is known as ‘The Heart of Neolithic Orkney’ and is designated a World Heritage Site. Aside from its very important past, the West Mainland’s intricate coastline – beautiful beaches and towering cliffs – are perfect for spotting a seal, glimpsing a puffin or uncovering the rare and very beautiful primula scotica. Moving in land, anglers won’t be disappointed with rich fishing on lochs, such as Harray, Stenness, Boardhouse, Hundland and Swannay. Visitors to the West will also discover many fine eating places, visitor centres, craft workshops and historic sites on their travels.

Kirkwall
Clustered tightly on the shores of Hamnavoe, beneath the rocky ridge of Brinkie’s Brae, is the harbour town of Stromness. Dating back to the 17th century, many of the shore side houses have their own piers, while the houses higher up the hill are reached by narrow winding lanes. Well served with craft and coffee shops, restaurants, an art gallery and museum, Stromness is the perfect place to meander.
Dominated and built around the red-sandstone magnificence of St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall gently bustles with visitors catching a ferry to the North Isles, seeking out the town’s history in its historic houses and museums, browsing its shops, crafts and culture, or enjoying a coffee or some island produce in its fine array of cafés and restaurants.

The
Orkney’s islands are special. Each has its own geographic and historic attractions, yet all provide the same intimacy with nature and warmth of welcome. Read on to find out about each island’s individual characteristics and why no visit to Orkney is complete without a ferry or plane trip to one or more of our precious gems. Hoy With the highest hills of Orkney and measuring 57 square miles, Hoy (or High Island) is one of the most prominent of the isles. The imposing hills are a constant, yet ever-changing, feature in views from all over the county. On approach by ferry from Scrabster to Stromness, visitors get an early introduction to Hoy by way of the majestic cliffs of St John’s Head and the famous cliff stack, the Old Man of Hoy. From the island itself, a path from the beautiful Rackwick Bay leads to Ward Hill and onward to the top of the cliff overlooking the Old Man. To the south of the island is the pretty bay and village of Longhope, while the museum and surrounding area at Lyness is a stark reminder of the very important part that Orkney played in both World Wars.
Graemsay Only a 15-minute sail from Stromness and visitors are transported to peaceful Graemsay. Nature is blessed with little disturbance on this relatively traffic-free island. Positioned in the north entrance to Scapa Flow, Graemsay is home to two of Orkney’s earliest lighthouses – Hoy High and Hoy Low – which were built in 1851 by Alan Stevenson (the uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson).
Flotta Lying at the south entrance to Scapa Flow, Flotta (or Flat Island) enjoys spectacular views. The Flotta Trail, running around the island’s west and south coast, combines rich wildlife and stunning coastal scenery with a wealth of military history stemming from the island’s strategic role in both World Wars. The island is now the location of Orkney’s oil terminal, but it retains a striking rural charm. The heather-covered moorland of West Hill supports many breeding birds, Stanger Head has a small puffin colony and seals abound in all the bays. Rackwick Bay, Hoy

The most northerly of the islands and, perhaps, the most traditional, North Ronaldsay is home to many species of birds, mammals, wildflowers and the native breed of seaweed-grazing sheep – the meat from which has a unique and delicious flavour. The island is also on the migratory path of many rare birds, enjoying a welcome stop off on their journey between Iceland, Greenland or Scandinavia and warmer climates.
Cattle farming on Westray’s rich agricultural land, is coupled with a strong fishing tradition to create a bountiful harvest from both land and sea. The many natural features that have inspired artists over the centuries are still prominent today – as are many examples of the talent and workmanship of the inhabitants down the ages, such as the Westray Stone and the three 5,000 year-old figurines (the Westray Wife, her husband and the Grobust Grandad), on display at the Heritage Centre.

The shortest scheduled air service in the world operates between Westray and Papa Westray – a journey which has been completed in a minute! While Westray is famed for its puffin colonies, Papa Westray is well known for its colony of storm petrels. Papa Westray (or Papay) is also home to the oldest house in Northern Europe, the Knap of Howar (which pre-dates the Pyramids!). Westray and Papa Westray have been Fairtrade Islands since 2007.

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Known as ‘The Egypt of the North’ – thanks to its Norse settlements, brochs and abundant chambered tombs – Rousay is easily accessible by car ferry and perfect to explore on a circular bike ride or a leisurely drive. The island’s much smaller neighbours, Egilsay and Wyre are both at the heart of Norse heritage – Egilsay being the place where Earl Magnus met his death – and the church of St Magnus was built in his memory – and Wyre where the oldest square keep castle in Scotland was built around 1150 and, close by, the beautifully preserved St Mary’s Chapel. St Magnus Church, Egilsay
Shapinsay A 25-minute journey by ferry from Kirkwall is the green and fertile island of Shapinsay with the enchanting Victorian Balfour Castle and the stone-built village of Balfour. This conservation village dates from the18th century and housed workers on the Balfour estate. Within the patchwork of fields and the 19th century road network there remains strong evidence of Shapinsay’s Iron Age, and of its former Norse inhabitants.
Stronsay The unusual profile of Stronsay accommodates three large bays, sweeping sands and the spectacular rock arch – the Vat of Kirbuster. The island was home to a busy herring industry in the 1800s. Today, visitors enjoy a warm welcome to the low lying island, which is perfect for cycling and coastal walks.
Eday
Sanday
The varied landscape of Eday with its heathery hills, green pastures, beaches and dramatic cliffs makes it a real pleasure to explore. It was Eday’s red sandstone which was shipped to Kirkwall to build the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral and the Earl’s Palace. Local folklore suggests that the large monolith Stone of Setter, measuring 4.5 metres high, which resembles the hand of a giant, is the resting place of a laird’s wife, who fell into the hole dug to accommodate the large stone. The island is also legendary as the place where Orkney’s notorious pirate, John Gow, was finally captured when his ship ran aground, in 1725.
Aptly named, Sanday has the most remarkable clean and expansive white sandy beaches, which are, for most, only occupied by wading birds, seals, seabirds and the occasional otter. The sandy soil has attracted farmers for over 6,000 years, with evidence of Neolithic, Pictish and Viking people continuing to emerge today. The shallow east coast beaches form an internationally important site for harbour seals and wintering wading birds including purple sandpiper, turnstone, sanderlings and bar-tailed godwits.

ACTIVITIES
The long summer days are perfect for enjoying Orkney outdoors – whether taking to the hills, playing a round of golf or heading out to sea. Yet we’re equally prepared for less inclement weather with extensive indoor leisure facilities. New for 2013, at the Pickaquoy Centre is a 25-metre swimming pool, leisure pool, health suite, climbing wall, squash courts and soft play area.
On the loch Orkney’s brown trout fishing is described by many anglers as the best in the UK. In fact, as far back as 1889, it was in the Loch of Stenness that a British record-breaking 29-pound brown trout was caught – a record which was held for more than 100 years. The trout is still on display in Stromness Museum. We may not be able to promise such a large catch today, but we can promise abundant fishing in a range of lochs across the islands.
Stromness Golf Course
Sea Angling in Scapa Flow
On the land
On the sea
The islands’ topography is perfect for exploring on two wheels – there are few hills to climb, leaving the sometimes bracing wind as the only challenge for cyclists. With many quiet loop roads, some careful planning will open up a new vista on every turn. Whether it’s meandering along the back roads of the West Mainland or looping the islands, it is the perfect way to waken up your senses to Orkney’s riches. With 570 miles of coastline, and many areas that are valued for their natural heritage and, as such, designated for conservation, walking in Orkney is abundant in both nature and beauty. Excellent interpretative panels and coastal paths lead you to historic sites, dramatic geological features, beautiful beaches, rare plants and wildflowers, and close encounters with an array of birds and wild mammals.
At sea, the fishing is also good with sea trout in the shallower waters and a variety of species in the further fishing grounds, which are accessible via chartered angling trips. The welcome challenge for sailors in Orkney waters is tidal rather than traffic. The islands are a joy to explore by yacht or dinghy with the high tidal rise and falls presenting the perfect sailing experience. The marinas at Kirkwall, Stromness and Westray are well equipped with facilities to welcome visiting yachts and offer a ‘meet and greet’ service to ensure visitors get the most from their visit. Kirkwall and Westray are perfect stopping off points for a cruise around the Northern Isles, while Stromness is at the heart of the famous waters of Scapa Flow. Orkney’s clear waters are a real pleasure for divers, whether it’s exploring marine life or historic sites. Much of Orkney’s marine heritage lies beneath the waves, including the famous scuttled German fleet from World War I. Professional dive centres provide accredited training for beginners.
“Scapa Flow is renowned worldwide as the final resting place of three German WW1 battleships and four light cruisers scuttled there with the rest of the interned High Seas Fleet in 1919. With countless other historic wrecks in such a concentrated area, Scapa Flow is one of the top dive locations in the world.”
Above the water line, the conditions are perfect for sea kayakers. Beginners can enjoy the sheltered coastal waters around Scapa Flow while the more adventurous may want to tackle the Pentland Firth’s tidal streams. Orkney is also gaining quite a reputation for surfing, with some of the best waves in Europe invigorating board, wind and kite surfers.

“Orkney’s long history of art and crafts is unique. From Neolithic times through the Norse period to the present day, craftspeople have made objects that are both useful and beautiful.”
Whether it’s the landscape, the wildlife, the archaeology or the rich tapestry of history, the islands are a true inspiration for wordsmiths, jewellers, painters, potters, textile designers, furniture-makers and more. Jewellers across Orkney create beautiful pieces inspired by their natural environment, wildlife, prehistoric and Viking heritage.
Ola Gorie MBE Jeweller
The natural colours of North Ronaldsay wool are transformed into jumpers, handbags, scarves and more, while contemporary textiles are created, which blend cutting-edge techniques with traditional methods.

Orkney TASTE OF
Throughout the country, more and more people are beginning to seek out and value local produce, yet in Orkney the rich natural larder has always been to the fore.
Locally reared beef and lamb, freshly caught seafood, fresh vegetables, soft fruits, delicious chutneys and jams, locally milled grains for bread, rich cheeses, ice creams and confectionery grace menus in fine eateries across the islands. To complement the food, there is also an array of real ales, wines and, of course, whisky from Scotland’s most northerly distillery. It’s not just the excellent hotels, restaurants and cafés in the towns that serve good food. It is a real pleasure to discover a café or restaurant in the more remote locations serving not only good food but also offering the most amazing views! Visitors choosing to prepare their own Orkney feast can select produce from the islands’ butchers, fishmongers, shops, delis and the monthly Farmers’ Market in Kirkwall. The fresh natural ingredients need little embellishment – just simple cooking for culinary perfection.

TASTE OF ORKNEY
“In Orkney, we’re fortunate to be able to share close working relationships with local producers and fishermen, so that the very best seasonal produce is delivered to our kitchen and feature on our menus.” Paul Doull Owner and Chef of the Foveran Hotel
Wooden-barrelled butter churn
North Ronaldsay mutton with an Orkney cheddar and ale sauce
The people of Skara Brae were growing wheat and barley over 5,000 years ago! Despite having no vineyards, a variety of fruit and flower flavoured wines are produced locally The ancient barley grain ‘bere’ is still used to bake a range of bread, bannocks and biscuits today Orkney is home to the most northerly whisky distillery in the UK, which was founded in 1798

Orkney GETTING TO
First and foremost, let’s dispel any thought that Orkney might be difficult to reach. With regular air and sea services, and great links from across the UK, the islands have never been more accessible than they are today.
Travel by plane
Travel by boat
Bringing your car
The service, operated by Loganair on behalf of Flybe, offers direct flights from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Shetland. There are several flights per day, all of which offer great Flybe and British Airways connections from many UK and overseas airports.
There are four routes to choose from:
With good roads throughout Orkney – and the opportunity to take your car to the islands – driving is a convenient option. From the motorway to Perth, the A9 to Inverness and north to Caithness passes through the heart of Highland Scotland. Alternatively, the road to Aberdeen takes you through Dundee and up the north east coast.
London – Kirkwall (with connections) 3 - 4 hours
Glasgow or Edinburgh – Kirkwall 80 minutes Aberdeen – Kirkwall 50 minutes Inverness – Kirkwall 45 minutes Sumburgh (Shetland) – Kirkwall 35 minutes www.flybe.com
Scrabster (near Thurso) – Stromness 90 minutes Aberdeen – Kirkwall 6 hours www.northlinkferries.co.uk Gills Bay (near John O’Groats) – St Margaret’s Hope, South Ronaldsay 60 minutes www.pentlandferries.co.uk John O’Groats – Burwick, South Ronaldsay 40 minutes (operates May – September) (passengers only) www.jogferry.co.uk All offer from two to four sailings per day (dependent on the season), with the exception of the Aberdeen to Kirkwall route, which operates up to four sailings per week.
Taking the bus The Citylink network connects with bus stations close to the sea services at Aberdeen, Scrabster and Gill’s Bay. www.citylink.co.uk The Orkney Bus is a direct express travel service operating from Inverness to Kirkwall, connecting with John O’ Groat Ferries (from June to September). www.jogferry.co.uk
Taking the train From the main Scottish Railway stations, you can travel to Aberdeen and Thurso, both of which are close to the sea services.

Around 75,000 visitors will arrive in Orkney by cruise ship during 2013. Following the most successful cruise season to date in 2012, when 77 ships called at Orkney, an extension to the quay at Hatston is making Orkney even more accessible to cruise liners this year. The snapshot of Orkney offered to passengers leads to many sailing away with plans for a much longer return visit.
