Most holiday apartments are individually owned and then leased for holiday rentals. Apartment owners individually decorate their apartments so it is important to note that the decor you see in brochures and on websites may not be the same as the apartment you end up staying in. Apartments generally offer full kitchens or kitchenettes and a laundry either in the apartment or located in the complex. You will need to provide your own soap, toilet rolls, dishwashing liquid, tea/coffee etc. Some apartments will provide you with a small initial supply but these will not be replenished during your stay. Most apartments are serviced every 7 or 10 days and this is normally restricted to a change of towels, bed linen and a quick clean. Most apartments provide cleaning equipment for you to use, at the end of your stay apartments should be left clean and tidy. Some apartments in major cities will be serviced daily, your House of Travel consultant can advise you on this. Apartments do not offer the same facilities and services as hotels. For example they may not offer 24 hour reception or room service and most apartment buildings do not have restaurants onsite. A bond may be required to be paid on check in, particularly from young adults. Some smaller low rise apartment complexes do not have lift access.

Brisbane The sun is rising as you free-wheel your bike down an easy slope towards the slow-moving river. Cockatoos and kookaburras greet the day which, despite it being midwinter, looks likely to hit the early twenties again. Bright tropical flowers and impossibly green lawns line the route to your new favourite café. Alas, a long weekend is not enough to enjoy all the delights that Brisbane has to offer. After brunch and a few hours browsing the markets you’ll barely have time to change into something sensational before you hit the thriving nightlife. At least the airport is only 20 minutes from the city centre so you’ll be able to stretch your stay to the last possible minute. You’re already planning your next visit so you can venture a little further afield, including a day trip to stunning Moreton Island, just an hour’s boat ride away.
Our favourite things to see & do •
YOUNG DESIGNERS MARKET – These markets on Little Stanley Street, Southbank, feature some of Brisbane’s best up and coming designers and artists selling a range of fashion and accessories, jewellery, homewares, furniture and arts. Held on the first Sunday of the month.
•
SOUTHBANK – With Streets Beach (Australia’s only inner city beach), a water park, walks, promenades and lots of restaurants there’s plenty to do. Enjoy a swim in the lagoon, have a doze on the beach or organise a picnic in the park.
•
FREE GUIDED WALKS – Explore some of the city sights such as Brisbane Arcade, City Hall, Treasury Casino, Queens Gardens, Old State Library and Old Government House. Tours start from the Brisbane Visitor Information & Booking Centre Monday to Friday at 12pm.
•

MT COOT-THA – The breathtaking panorama of Brisbane City greets you as you step onto the observation deck. By day, you can see the sun shining over Brisbane, out to Moreton Bay and by night, a fairyland of glittering lights and starlit sky surrounds you.
•
FREE BUS SERVICE – Take the `Loop’, a free and convenient bus service that travels around the CBD (in both directions) and gives you a great feel for the layout of the city. (Mon-Fri)
•
BRISBANE RIVERWALK – Connects more than 20kms of pathways, roads, bridges and riverside parks along the Brisbane River. You can follow the pathways to walk or ride alongside the river, on the north or south banks. It is a great way to see another side of the city.
•
GOMA – The Gallery of Modern Art, which opened in 2006, is only 150 metres from the Queensland Art Gallery and focuses on the art of the twentieth & twenty-first centuries.

At 40 storeys, this riverside hotel has stunning views (from the apartments’ floor-to-ceiling windows) of the city, river, Story Bridge and Botanic Gardens. Combine this with a 25 metre heated lap pool, sundeck, spa and gym and it feels more like a resort than a city apartment hotel.
Between working up a sweat in the gym, enjoying a game of tennis, and relaxing in the pool, you may never want to leave. If you do, you’ll find it handy to the CBD and Fortitude Valley. It’s just a 10 minute stroll to Eagle St Pier, an area with loads of great restaurants.
Soak up the views of Brisbane’s skyline from your apartment’s private balcony at this contemporary styled property within walking distance to South Bank Markets, Parklands and Lagoon and the Performing Arts Complex & Lyric Theatre. There are dining options galore around here too.

Gold Coast You’re sitting on the balcony watching the sun sink behind the green hills of the hinterland and the fresh prawns sizzling will be your reward for another day of fun-filled activity in this destination that has constantly surprised and delighted you. A sunset barbeque is a quintessential Gold Coast experience in a place where relaxed outdoor living is practically compulsory. There’s also been some serious retail therapy in the shopping meccas of Pacific Fair and Harbour Town, and you’ve been dragged onto some of the fastest, tallest and longest theme park rides in Australia. That breathtaking 70km stretch of beach has seen you dust off your best surfing poses, but more than all that, this holiday has been a chance to hang out and reconnect with very important people in your life.

In a clearing of Melaleuca trees, discover a fireside Aboriginal corroboree where you’ll see traditional dance. The haunting sound of the didgeridoo echoing through the Sanctuary’s natural bush land is a truly memorable experience.

Coolangatta Coolangatta’s charms were discovered by holiday makers in the 1880s with visitors gravitating to the pretty beaches and this has not stopped since! It’s more laid back than Surfers Paradise, which is just 25 minutes away, and boasts a superb white sandy beach that stretches over a kilometre. Head to the southern end’s Greenmount, a small, rocky, tree-lined headland and sheltered beach and take a short trek around the headland. You might see some popular locals – the pods of dolphins that live around here, they are often spotted frolicking in the waves off the headland. If you’re in town on the second Sunday of every month, then you’ll definitely want to sift through the stalls at the beachfront markets – full of arts & crafts as well as lots of delicious foodie treats.

There’s nine awesome water slides, and a couple of our favourites are The Wedgie (where the trap door opens and you plummet feet first down the pipe) and the Super Tubes HyrdoCoaster, a rollercoaster on water with twists & turns, propelling you up the steepest of inclines at high speeds. There’s plenty of fun for the younger kids with a water playground, water park and a wave pool.

Sunshine Coast Steve Irwin’s family was onto something when they started their enterprise in 1970. Its incredible growth in popularity since then has been mirrored by that of the Sunshine Coast itself. Of course you don’t have to be into reptiles to have a great time in this region: you can learn to surf, walk the coastline for miles through a National Park and finally enjoy fish and chips or a gourmet meal as the sun goes down. The laidback, outdoor lifestyle is one you’ll adjust to very quickly! Choose from kilometres of fabulous beaches, from Caloundra in the south to Cooloola in the north (which also serves as gateway to Fraser Island). When you tire of beaches, the cooking schools and day spas will compete for your attention, along with championship golf courses and, of course, that world-famous zoo.
Our favourite things to see & do •

•
MARKETS – Head to one of the local, hinterland or seaside markets. Stock up on local produce, specialty fare and original creations. "Make it, bake it, grow it or sew it" is the ethos of the famous Eumundi Market.

•

Alexandra Headlands Known as ‘Alex’ to the locals, this is a chilled out town sitting on what is called the Sunshine Strip – between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. It is more laid back than its neighbours, but you’re still close enough to walk there if you feel like a wander and a bit more hustle and bustle. This really is a place to just sit back and relax, pack a picnic and head down to the beach for a day relaxing on the white sand. You can even get amongst it yourself, with plenty of places to sign up for a surf lesson or to rent boards. When it’s time for dinner, most of the restaurants are on the Parade running along the beach and there is plenty of choice, or you can make use of the public BBQs that are by the beach and enjoy a casual dinner while you watch the sun go down over the sea – perfect!

Fraser Coast Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world: 123 kilometres in length with striking sand cliffs, over 100 freshwater lakes, crystal clear flowing streams, dramatic shipwrecks, a thriving wild dingo population and the only subtropical rainforest where trees grow directly in the sand. It’s just one of the highlights of the Fraser Coast, just three and a half hours north of Brisbane. Another hot spot on this coast is Hervey Bay, considered Australia’s whale watching capital due to the annual visit made by humpback whales on their way from northern Queensland to Antarctica between July and November. If boating doesn’t appeal, take to the air in a plane, helicopter or microlite for a different perspective. Fishing, sailing and glass-bottomed boat trips, museums and art galleries, sheltered beaches and a mild climate – it’s little wonder that the region’s catchphrase is "Perfect by Nature".

Whitsundays Are you longing to escape the rat race for a week or two and embrace a more leisurely pace of life? A week spent in the stunning Whitsunday Islands will feel like a month, as time slows down and your biggest decision is whether to have another cocktail poolside or squeeze in another snorkelling trip before dinner. You don’t need Photoshop expertise to capture the incredible colours of the water that surrounds these islands. Tiny particles of coral sand in the water scatter the sunlight as it enters the water, causing that astonishing glow that will elicit sighs of envy from the folks back home when they see your holiday snaps. The islands themselves rise up out of the Coral Sea and are cloaked in lush rainforest – the perfect contrast to white sand and blue water.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF – The world’s largest living structure, the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef is just a short trip from the Whitsundays.
•
HEART REEF – This is a stunning composition of coral that has naturally formed into the shape of a heart. Located in Hardy Reef, Heart Reef is best experienced from the air by helicopter or seaplane, as visitors are unable to snorkel or dive there due its protected status.
•
SAILING – Be the master of your own destiny and charter a yacht to skipper yourself, or take a cruise and let someone else do the sailing for you.
•
SCENIC FLIGHTS – For a bird’s eye view take in the panorama of the Whitsundays landscape from a seaplane or helicopter, or perhaps even a skydive!
•
WHALE WATCHING – From June to September, whales are a common sight frolicking amongst the islands. There are currently no whale watching tours, but whale sightings are a free bonus on most day tours.
•
PAMPERING – There’s nothing like a little indulgence on holiday and if you happen to find yourself on holiday in a little rain spell, it’s even better as there’s no need to feel guilty about missing hours of sunshine while being pampered indoors.

Port Douglas Port Douglas is a relaxed seaside village that also serves as a jumping-off point for the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, jetskiing: it’s all so accessible, you’ll need a few extra days in those spas just to recover. Perhaps surprisingly, this little town is home to some world-class restaurants, fashionable boutiques, spas and exclusive accommodation – it’s not unusual to rub shoulders with celebrities. Tropical North Queensland Islands How’s this for a picture-perfect holiday? You’re floating in an aquamarine sea watching fish swarm in and around psychedelic coral formations, while the sun warms both your back and the white sand. Shortly you’ll exit the water, and resign yourself to another feast of fresh fruit, seafood and other good things. You probably couldn’t fit more tropical holiday clichés in one place, but happily, a holiday in the islands of North Queensland is anything but a cliché. There are so many options to choose from. Take the family for a fun getaway or flee to a couples-only luxury resort for some alone time; spend your days waterskiing and scuba diving or do nothing more energetic than occasionally flopping out of your hammock and into the pool.

Touring Queensland If you thought that all this sunny state had to offer was theme parks, zoos and a great big reef, you couldn’t be more wrong – besides stunning beaches, a seemingly endless supply of sunshine and enough fun parks to entertain the entire family for a couple of weeks, there’s a whole lot more on offer. Let’s start with the World Heritage listed rainforest of the Tropical North, home to more fascinating creatures than you could poke a stick at (not that you’d want to). Spend a few hours in the Daintree with the original locals and you’ll come away with an inkling of some of their secrets and a greater appreciation for its wealth of precious resources. If you’re a wildlife nut, go dingo spotting on Fraser Island, humpback whale watching in Hervey Bay or croc hunting (with a camera, of course) at Cape Tribulation. None of that appeals either? Why not head inland for some time as a jackaroo (or jillaroo) on a vast working cattle ranch, have a flutter at the Gold Coast races or discover the region’s finest fresh produce on a gourmet food tour. And when you’re finished with all that excitement, there’s a very good chance you’ll be looking forward to flopping on one of those beautiful beaches after all.

Take to the Road As you approach the hairpin bend near the crest of a mountain, you’re treated to the sight of the clear blue waters of the Pacific Ocean spread out before you. You have no choice but to park by the side of the road and take a moment to enjoy the magnificent vista before you. You’re driving along the Pacific Coast of Queensland, one of the most beautiful drives in the country! West of the Pacific are driving routes through the savannah grasslands of Tropical North Queensland and in the Outback you can follow in the footsteps of the country’s pioneers. In South East Queensland explore the picture-postcard countryside and meandering mountain ranges. These are just some of the great driving adventures to be found in Queensland.

Rental Car Choosing your Rental Car Take into consideration the size of the vehicle you require. If the vehicle is to be used for day touring from a central base and not for transporting your luggage, a smaller vehicle will be suitable. However, if you’re going to be covering long distances then a 2 litre for two adults would be more suitable. We suggest you book your car before leaving home as this will save money and ensure that you get the car of your choice – there is a huge range of car types on offer from economy vehicles to SUVs and mini buses.

Queensland Self Drives
Pacific Coast Touring Route (Brisbane – Cairns)
Cairns and Highlands Loop (Cairns – Cairns)
5 days/4 nights
6 days/5 nights
Stretching from Brisbane to Cairns the Pacific Coast Touring Route is the backbone of this Queensland self drive. There are plenty of great diversions along the way with parks and gardens, arts and crafts, glorious beaches and bays and the Great Barrier Reef. If you have time on your hands you can easily slow the pace and stop for extra nights along the way.
Few places on earth can match the beauty and sophistication of Tropical North Queensland – where the rainforest meets the reef. Take to the water and explore the Great Barrier Reef, head north to the seaside village of Port Douglas and visit the superb tropical rainforest of the Daintree & Cape Tribulation, where two World Heritage areas exist side by side.
Day 1: Brisbane – Bundaberg Head through the famous Sunshine Coast where you can take some time out to relax or leave your car and cruise over to Fraser Island for the day (or stay a night). Next is the Southern Barrier Reef, the gateway to one of the natural wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef!
Day 1: Cairns – Cape Tribulation After taking time to explore Cairns and its surrounds, start your journey north on the scenic coastal road. Port Douglas is the perfect spot to stop for lunch before you continue north to the Daintree National Park. It takes less than five minutes to cross the Daintree River by ferry, but on the other side you enter an entirely new tropical world.
Day 2: Bundaberg – Mackay This 656 km section crosses the Tropic of Capricorn with the National Heritage Walking Trail criss-crossing the route. It’s one of Queensland’s ‘must do’ drives, the diversity of attractions is so remarkable you may need to add a day or two to your original itinerary to see it all. Day 3: Mackay – Townsville This stretch hugs the coastline as it journeys north, think clear tranquil waters filled with colourful coral and tropical fish, mouth watering fruits and succulent seafood, long white sandy beaches and secluded rainforest pockets, and this is just a taste! Day 4: Townsville – Cairns This part of the drive is called ‘The Great Green Way’ and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There’s 12 National Parks, over 20 tropical islands, cascading waterfalls, swimming holes and walking tracks. Have your camera ready because there are heaps of photo opportunities along the way. Day 5: Cairns This is a great base from which to explore the Great Barrier Reef.
Day 2-3:Cape Tribulation – Atherton To get a true perspective of the magnificent rainforest a visit to the Daintree Rainforest Environmental Centre is a must. If time allows a Daintree River Cruise gives you a different vantage point of the forest, you might even see some crocs. Next stop is Mareeba, via Mount Molloy, sitting atop a plateau 1000 metres above sea level. Day 4: Atherton – Mission Beach Head off early down the Range towards Innisfail (one of Australia’s largest sugar-producing towns) before arriving in Mission Beach, you can stretch your legs on the 1.5km Ulysses Link Walking Track, which winds its way along the beach foreshore. Day 5: Mission Beach Spend a day relaxing in Mission Beach or if sightseeing is more your thing, take a drive to Paronella Park (47kms from Mission Beach) a crumbling Spanish castle at Mena Creek. Paronella Park appears to be hundreds of years older than its true age creating the image of a lost paradise and fantasy garden hidden in the depths of the rainforest. Day 6: Mission Beach – Cairns Leisurely make your way back to Cairns.
Highlights worth seeing along the way
Highlights worth seeing along the way
SUNSHINE COAST BEACHES – Beautiful beaches, bars, boutiques and some great walks.
GREAT BARRIER REEF – Get out on the reef on a day tour from Cairns, you won’t be disappointed!
FRASER ISLAND – Hire a 4WD and experience driving in sand, or join a ranger guided 4WD tour.
ATHERTON TABLELANDS – Tucked away in the folds of the hills are lovely waterfalls surrounded by lush rainforest, some popular ones are Millaa Millaa, Malanda and Mungalli.
GREAT BARRIER REEF – The largest living structure on earth with an array of colourful aquatic life and islands.
MAREEBA WETLANDS – See the amazing array of wetland birdlife in the wild.
51 This is a suggested Self Drive itinerary and is to be used in conjunction with a road map.
Take to the Tracks As you gaze out your window and witness the sheer size and beauty of the Queensland landscape, say a mental "thank you!" to the Queensland Government, who in 1865 recognised that rail was the best way to provide regular, efficient access to people, places and goods in areas that were otherwise difficult to reach. The Queensland rail system boasts a total route network of over 8,000 kilometres, which means that wherever you’re planning to holiday there’s no better way to see it than by rail. It’s a great way to get from A to B and also for exploring. The Explorer Pass, for example, gives you unlimited stops from Brisbane to Cairns, making it the perfect way to travel almost the entire East Coast of Queensland. It also allows you to head into the Outback, taking in centres like Mt Isa and Longreach. Rail provides a fascinating insight into this country, so if your journey is just as important as your destination, then rail is a great choice.
Tilt Train
The Sunlander (Brisbane – Cairns)
Tilt Train (Brisbane – Cairns)
Spirit of the Outback (Brisbane – Longreach)
Sit back and enjoy a journey that has been voted Australia’s best, and one of the top 25 in the world: Queenslander Class offers overnight sleepers, lounge, dining and club cars. This is rail travel in style. During the day you’ll get to enjoy great Australian food, wine and hospitality as that incredible East Coast scenery flashes past outside your window, and at night you can snuggle down in a cosy twin berth sleeping compartment.
The Tilt Train travels from Brisbane to Cairns two times weekly in either direction, making it a great way to get to your holiday destination in comfort and speed and soak up some of the stunning coastal scenery along the way. The entire journey takes just under 24 hours, but with stops in such key spots as Mackay, Proserpine and Townsville, it’s perfect if you’re heading to the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island or Hervey Bay.
If you’re interested in the heritage and scenery of the Australian Outback, a visit to Longreach is well worthwhile and getting there by train is almost compulsory. The journey from Brisbane to Longreach takes around 24 hours, along the way you’ll get to sample authentic Queensland tucker, share a drink or two with your fellow travellers in the Lounge Car and enjoy the untamed scenery.

Imagine crossing creek beds and driving through lush rainforests that emerge on tropical beaches and encountering natural wonders such as the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. The other option for destinations not so off the beaten track is a Premier Escorted Tour.
