Experience Victoria

© Tourism Victoria

It might be one of Australia’s smallest states, but Victoria, on the continent’s south-eastern tip, is a richly diverse region with mountains, outback, historic mining towns, a spectacular coastline and the cultural, shopping and dining powerhouse that is Melbourne. No stay here is complete without visiting some of its galleries, which house some of Australia’s most important art collections. The museums are world class, you can always find at least one blockbuster musical on stage, and the sporting events are the stuff of legends. Be sure to spend some time outside the city, learning more about the state’s colourful historical heritage which lives on in the mining towns of Ballarat and Bendigo, and the vast expanses of mountains such as the Grampians and the Dandenong Ranges. Hear stories of the cattlemen and bushrangers, then create your own tall tales whilst sampling the great local wine vintages – Victoria has over 850 vineyards which produce award-winning wines by the barrel. The mighty Murray River forms the state’s northern boundary – you could spend a week or more on and around its waters, but be sure to also save some time for the Great Ocean Road, one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. This magnificent touring route offers legendary surf beaches and fascinating 19th century shipwrecks. Victoria’s European history is relatively short, but its Aboriginal people have 60,000 years of local heritage, which today you can experience as ancient rock art or contemporary Aboriginal art.

Melbourne Name your passion and Melbourne can probably match it. Love to shop? Melbourne is a haven for top designers, boutiques and luxury stores. A culture vulture? The theatres are alive with musicals and plays. You’re a foodie? There are more restaurants than days in a year. A sportaholic? The city hosts the Australian Open Tennis, the Melbourne Cup, Grand Prix and the Boxing Day cricket test, just for starters. Melbourne is a visitor-friendly combination of bustling thoroughfares and fascinating lanes, and no other Australian city has as many arcades. Winding through the city is the Yarra River: its Southbank district is lined with cafés and bars while on the north side you’ll find the city’s creative heartland around Federation Square. Further afield, the vibrant, trendy and culturally diverse suburbs such as Fitzroy, St Kilda and Prahan are accessible via the famous city tram and bus network.

Melbourne to Adelaide Tour

Great Ocean Road Tour

Full day

3 days/2 nights

2 days/1 night

This small group tour is a full day of outstanding sights, information and entertainment, with plenty of fun and a few little surprises along the way. You’ll take in all of the highlights on this glorious coastal drive.

Travel the Great Ocean Road and visit the renowned Coonawarra wine region, stay amongst the vines and immerse yourself in local food and wine. You’ll travel through coastal villages, open plains and scenic hills on route to Adelaide.

Explore the length of this great coastal road in a relaxed and comfortable style. The diversity is amazing and breath-taking, and these small group tours combined with a thoughtful itinerary allow you to unwind while taking it all in.

Day 1: Great Ocean Road You’ll see pristine beaches and rugged rocky outcrops of the Great Ocean Road, stop at numerous beaches, lookouts and other scenic spots to allow you an opportunity to take plenty of snaps, as well as simply relax while enjoying the amazing views.

Day 1: Melbourne – Apollo Bay After a first stop at Bells Beach, travel the very scenic, cliff-hugging section of the Great Ocean Road, stopping to view the 'Arch' on the way to Lorne, a lovely seaside town. After stopping at Kennett River to spot koalas in the wild, you’ll journey into the Great Otway National Park to walk the cool temperate rainforest gully.

Day 1: Melbourne – Torquay – Lorne After your hotel pick up, the first stop is Geelong to walk along its revitalised waterfront. You are then off to the start of the Great Ocean Road at Torquay and a visit to Bells Beach. On route to lunch in Lorne, spot kangaroos in Anglesea and stop at the memorial arch. After lunch you’ll take in the beautiful cliff-hugging road, discover Koalas in the wild and take a walk in ancient rainforests. Your accommodation is set high on a hill overlooking the Southern Ocean.

Follow the Great Ocean Road into the mountains and take a stroll in the Great Otway National Park. Wonder at the intricate beauty of ancient rainforest and marvel at the region’s towering native hardwoods, some of the tallest trees anywhere in the world. Then of course it’s onwards to the Port Campbell National Park, where you’ll be awestruck by the park’s world famous rock formations including of course the 12 Apostles, the sensational (but much underestimated) Loch Ard Gorge and the collapsed London Bridge. There is also an upgrade option that includes a scenic helicopter flight taking in aerial views of the Port Campbell National Park including the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and the Baker’s Oven.

Day 2: Apollo Bay – Coonawarra The 12 Apostles are icons of Australia, and you’ll arrive as the stacks are lit with the morning sun making them perfect for photos and crowd free. Next, visit 'Loch Ard Gorge' where your guide will retell the story of Australia’s most famous 19th century shipwreck. The afternoon brings the impressive area of the Great Ocean Road, west of Port Campbell, and a stop at Mt Gambier to view the incredible colour of a volcanic crater lake, before heading on to the Coonawarra wine region. Day 3: Coonawarra – Adelaide Start with a visit to the Naracoorte Caves National Park for a cave tour of these limestone caves that are World Heritage listed due to the fossils found buried there. The journey then continues through the wine region of Padthaway as you head towards Adelaide. On the approach to the city you’ll visit the very popular village of Hahndorf and Mount Lofty summit for impressive, birds-eye views of Adelaide and surrounds.

Day 2: Otway Ranges – Port Campbell – Melbourne The day starts with breakfast at a very popular café in Apollo Bay before reaching the 12 Apostles at mid-morning. With few people around and sun lighting up the stacks from the east – this is the perfect time for photos. The stunning Loch Ard gorge is next followed by lunch in Port Campbell. You will then see some more beautiful, but lesser known, sites of the coast before your return to Melbourne.

Then you’re on your way to the Grampians, rising up majestically from the plains. Waterfalls, wildflowers and native animals are just some of the reasons to take the time to explore here. Then there is Ballarat, the gateway to the Goldfields region.

Day 1: Melbourne – Great Ocean Road Make your way towards Torquay, Victoria’s surf capital (it even has a surf museum) and a busy holiday spot that really bustles during the summer months. Just out of Torquay stop at the famous surf break of Bells Beach, a great spot with amazing views. Carry along the coast through the cute towns of Anglesea and Lorne to Apollo Bay. The stretch between Lorne and Apollo Bay is really picturesque with the highway carved into cliffs that drop into the ocean.

Day 1: Melbourne – Apollo Bay From Melbourne head towards Geelong, visiting the Botanic Gardens before heading to the Surf Coast towns of Torquay and Lorne. Drive the exquisitely scenic stretch of road from Lorne to Apollo Bay.

Day 2: Great Ocean Road – Grampians Outside Apollo Bay the road winds through the Great Otway National Park with its beautiful rainforests, before returning to hug the coast for the length of the Port Campbell National Park. This is the most famous section of the Great Ocean Road where you’ll find the 12 Apostles. Head out of Port Campbell to Warrnambool and the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, stop for a break in cute Port Fairy before heading through farming country to Halls Gap. Day 3: Grampians – Melbourne The Grampian National Park with rugged mountain scenery is renowned for unspoilt natural beauty and has great lookouts with stunning views, lovely waterfalls, ancient Aboriginal rock art, colourful wildflower displays and abundant native wildlife. On route back to Melbourne you’ll pass through Ballarat, with its rich gold mining history.

Day 2: Apollo Bay – Port Fairy Follow the Great Ocean Road through the Great Otway National Park to the 12 Apostles. Travel on to Warrnambool, home of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and the Shipwrecked sound and laser show, and then on to Port Fairy via Tower Hill. Day 3: Port Fairy – Halls Gap For the outdoorsy types, take the time to climb Mt Sturgeon or Mt Abrupt before experiencing the magic of the Grampians National Park. Take in the Aboriginal history of the region at Brambuk – The National Park and Cultural Centre in Halls Gap. Day 4: Halls Gap – Ballarat Visit Ararat, the only town in Australia founded by Chinese settlers. Drive through some of Australia’s finest winemaking country, detouring underground to see the vintages at Great Western. Day 5: Ballarat – Melbourne Spend the morning amid the colonial buildings of historic Ballarat or learn the amazing history from Ballarat’s gold rush days, and spend some time panning for gold at Sovereign Hill.

Mornington Peninsula

Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges

3 days/2 nights

3 days/2 nights

Combine coastal living with traditional Aussie charm on the Mornington Peninsula, just an hour from Melbourne. Explore the galleries, spas and cafés in breezy seaside villages, or escape to the hinterland for gourmet delights at boutique wineries. We suggest you base yourself in one of the towns or villages and get out and about on day trips to explore this pretty part of Australia.

Escape to the Yarra Valley to cruise the vine-strung hills and rolling farmland indulging in life’s great pleasures; food, wine and beautiful landscapes. Then disappear into the Dandenong Ranges’ secret fern glades, towering forests and eclectic villages. You can easily base yourself in the Yarra Valley and go on day trips to explore the region.

Day 1: Northern Peninsula First stop is Frankston, with its 10km of sweeping foreshore and a 17km art and cultural drive that takes in the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. If you have green fingers then definitely head to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne, a 30 minute drive from Frankston.

Day 1:Yarra Valley Enjoy the easy drive from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley. Stop in the town of Yarra Glen where you can explore the shops and pop into Yering Station for some wine tasting. Nearby is the amazing TarraWarra Museum of Art, a privately funded, public gallery housed in an impressive building.

Day 2: Southern Peninsula Dromana, Rosebud and Rye have tranquil bays and are really popular holiday spots in the summer months. They also have some sophisticated wine bars if you need to take a break. There is plenty of wildlife to see around these parts too, you can swim with some dolphins, check out some local seals or visit the Boneo Maze & Wetlands Centre, home to some endangered species like blue bill, freckled duck and the swamp skink which can be seen sunning themselves on logs on hot days along the boardwalk. Echidnas, wallabies and tortoises also live in the swamp, but since they are shy creatures, only a lucky few will see them.

Next stop is Domaine Chandon, a winery that was established by French champagne house Moët & Chandon in 1986, and is dedicated to the production of sparkling wine. It has a great visitor centre with spectacular views across the vineyard and valley. Here you can do a wine tour, sample the goods and enjoy a late lunch.

Portsea is famous for its luxury cliff-top residences, bathing boxes and hotel with expansive beach-side lawn. Take the Millionaire’s Walk to Sorrento along cliff tops, through landscaped gardens and past private jetties for vantage points of the imposing mansions. Stylish Sorrento has lovely old limestone buildings, noted eateries, shops and galleries. Day 3: Western Port Bay This part of the peninsula has secluded beaches, dramatic coastline and great wineries, not to mention its quiet hinterland, and French and Phillip Islands just across the water. There are plenty of villages to call into: Balnarring, a good spot to stock up on local produce, tranquil Flinders with its gourmet dining options and cute shops, and Tyabb with antique stores galore.

Day 2: Dandenong Ranges Make your way to Belgrave, the home of Puffing Billy, Australia’s oldest steam railway and enjoy a ride travelling 24km through the beautiful forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges. The open-sided carriages are the best way to see the stunning views. After your rail journey take some time to explore the cute villages of the ranges like; Olinda, Belgrade and Sassafras that have shops and galleries galore and plenty of places to stop for Devonshire Teas or lunch. Get out into the fresh air in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, it offers a vast network of walking tracks through native bush and is home to the Mount Dandenong Observatory. At 633 metres above sea-level, it is the highest point in the ranges and has spectacular views to Melbourne.

Highlights worth seeing along the way

Highlights worth seeing along the way

ARTHUR’S SEAT – Behind Dromana, this is the highest viewpoint on the peninsula with breath-taking views and lovely ornamental gardens

YARRA VALLEY FOOD TRAIL – Stop at the sign-posted gastronomic hotspots to sample, savour, or pick. Call in at orchards, farm gates and roadside stalls to buy local produce directly from the grower

POINT NEPEAN – At the tip of the Peninsula, it was closed to the public for more than 100 years, but you can now walk it, cycle it and delve into a remarkable military history that dates back to the 1880s

MOUNT DONNA BUANG – Head to the southern slopes to The Rainforest Gallery with its spectacular observation platform and rainforest walkway
