enice is a natural stage and backstage, a theatre where the characters belong to the city’s past, where water, palaces and the sounds of the ‘campi’ – Venice small squares – recount tales and emotions. Luis Lumière himself, after is very first Paris projection in December 1895, had the idea of using his camera to describe a place. He chose Venice and sent an assistant to film the city. The result was the birth of a new revolutionary filming method. The camera did not film moving objects from a still position, but it was the operator himself who moved after the objects. Only one year after Lumière’s first projection - in 1896 “Panorama du Grand Canal pris d’un bateau” , a “filmine” of about one minute was created and subsequently many others followed. Venice therefore saw the birth of international cinematography. The first Cinema Show was organized in Venice in 1932 in the flourishing tourist centre of Lido. The first projecion, in August, 6th, 1932, was that of “Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hide” by Rouben Mamoulian. On that occasion Giovanni Volpi - a Venetian patron and author of the Show – invited, on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior, Lumière, the very author of cinema. Since then the Venice Cinema Show, has been at the forefront of worldwide cinematography.

Lo stesso Luis Lumière, dopo la prima proiezione parigina in senso assoluto- del dicembre del 1895, ebbe l’intuizione di utilizzare la sua macchina per raccontare in “panoramica” un luogo. Scelse Venezia, naturalmente, e inviò un operatore a filmare la città. Nacque un nuovo modo, se mai vecchio fosse stato l’altro, di fare cinema: la macchina da ripresa non più ferma a registrare oggetti in movimento, ma il contrario, dove a muoversi era stavolta l’operatore. Nacque, solo dopo un anno dalla prima proiezione dei Lumiere, nel 1896, “Panorama du Grand Canal pris d’un bateau”, un “filmine” di circa un minuto al quale ne seguirono molti altri. Venezia, dunque, ha fatto da culla alla cinematografia internazionale. Qui, nel 1932, si pensò di organizzare nel fiorente polo turistico del Lido la prima Mostra del Cinema in seno alla Biennale. E il conte Giovanni Volpi, mecenate veneziano, ideatore dell’evento, invitò alla prima proiezione di “Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hide” di Rouben Mamoulian, il 6 agosto del ’32, sulla terrazza dell’Hotel Excelsior, proprio quel Lumière che del cinema fu l’inventore. Da allora la Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, con i suoi altalenanti successi, ha raccolto l’avanguardia dell’arte cinematografica mondiale.

With a pictorial language that is linked on the one side to his dreams and hopes and on the other to anonymity and impersonality, Enzo Cucchi is – since the 70s – one of the most outstanding figures of Italian contemporary art. He was born in Morro D’Alba (Ancona) in 1949. He initially worked as a poet, although he had already achieved excellent results as self-taught painter. It is by working with a small publishing company of the Marche region that he comes into contact with Achille Bonito Oliva. It was Bonito Oliva himself who saw in this group the potential of a new outstanding generation of artists and invented for them the term Transavanguardia, indicating their antithetical stance with regard to the Avantgarde movement of the 60s. In this movement – that was officially founded at the Venice Biennale in 1980 – each artist had its own working method. In Cucchi’s paintings images, placed in a large canvas, seem to be free from any psychological constraint, decorated with nothing more than the necessary colours, clashing, absurd, melancholic, yet never symbolic nor verbal, as Brunella Antomarini affirms. What is also true, as Bonito Oliva again suggests, is that “the artist disarms himself, thus impeding that the right hand knows what the left hand is doing”. The result, as it can be seen at the exhibition at the Correr Museum on show until October 7, is an extraordinary combination of canvases, whose surface shines with a concrete and perhaps metaphysical light.
Con un linguaggio pittorico, che muove da un lato verso i propri sogni e speranze e dall’altro verso l’anonimato e l’impersonale, Enzo Cucchi rappresenta – dagli anni ’70 – un punto fisso dell’arte contemporanea italiana. Nato a Morro D’Alba (Ancona) nel ’49 , è dapprima poeta anche se aveva all’attivo un esordio in qualità di pittore autodidatta, e gli capita collaborando con una piccola casa editrice marchigiana, di entrare in contatto con Achille Bonito Oliva. Ed è proprio Bonito Oliva che, intuendo in questo gruppo l’afflato di una nuova importante generazione di artisti, conia per loro il termine Transavanguardia, che sta a indicare come si pongano oltre e in antitesi al movimento dell’Avanguardia sorto negli anni ’60. In questo movimento – nato ufficialmente alla Biennale di Venezia nel 1980 - ogni artista ha un proprio metodo di lavoro. Nella pittura di Cucchi le immagini, poste all’interno di una grande tela, sembrano liberate da psicologie e idee, ridotte ai colori necessari, stridenti, assurde, malinconiche, ma mai simboliche o letterali, come afferma Brunella Antomarini. Ma è vero anche, come suggerisce ancora Bonito Oliva, che “l’artista si disarma da solo, impedendo che la mano destra sappia cosa fa la sinistra”. Il risultato è, come si evince dalla mostra visitabile fino al 7 ottobre al Museo Correr di Venezia, uno straordinario insieme di tele dove la superficie brilla di una luce concreta e probabilmente metafisica.
Venice and Islam 828-1797
n the hands of the Ottoman Turks for twenty-five years, Constantinople (although it should be now better referred to as Istanbul), was getting ready to welcome, between 1479 and 1481, the official painter of the Republic of Venice, Gentile Bellini. The move could have appeared rather daring, a mere act of convenience – to the eyes of the contemporaries it was indeed. In reality, it had to do with nothing but pure necessity. At the risk of being accused of opportunism by the other European states – who jointly fought the common Muslim “enemy” – Venice could not fail to follow its vocation of trade and naval power, whose existence had its roots in the possessions in that very East with its difficult balance. The Turk was, indeed, a threat, a close and formidable neighbour to face and often to fight. Yet, just as frequently, it was an irreplaceable business “partner” that had the ability to ensure and maintain the great privileges of the “Stato da Mar”.(State of the Sea). Thus, Bellini’s journey – after a period of deep tensions – acted as a sort of official visit and Mohammed II – of whom he had to make a portrait and that had put an end to the dying Byzantine Empire (death which was also fostered by the Venetian conquest of Costantinople in 1204), looking forward to being legitimized at the European courts – could have benefited from it. The portrait, an extraordinary masterpiece normally exhibited at the London National Gallery, will be displayed until November 25, 2007 at the “Sala dello Scrutinio” of Palazzo Ducale at the exhibition “Venice and Islam, 828-1797” together with the works by his greatest pupils, Mansueti and Carpaccio, in a “dialogue” encompassing also the great paintings normally decorating the walls of the Sala, celebrating the “Battle of Lepanto” (by Andrea Vicentino, 1571) and the victory of the Venetians over the Turks and Egyptians. For the exhibition, curated by Stefano Carboni, it is a true “journey back home” after its appointments at the Metropolitan of New York and at the Institut du Monde Arabe of Paris. It brilliantly documents – through almost two hundred works including paintings, sculptures, miniatures, cartographies, metal works, glass objects, jewels, fabrics, carpets, pottery and more – the relationship between Venice and the Islamic realities with which it entered into contact: the Arabs, Mameluke Turks, Ottomans, Persians…in a chronological span ranging from 827 – year of the legendary transposition of the relics of Saint Mark from Alexandria, until the end of the Republic in 1797. A sort of leitmotiv underlying, rather than the differences, the mutual influences, the exchanges, the deep relationships and the extraordinary affinities that have led to a mutual enrichment in every branch of art and knowledge, as well as architecture and, in general, all aspects of everyday life.

aduta da venticinque anni in mano ai Turchi Ottomani, Costantinopoli (ma sarebbe più corretto dire ora Istanbul) si apprestava ad accogliere, tra il 1479 e il 1481, Gentile Bellini, il pittore ufficiale della Repubblica di Venezia. La mossa poteva sembrare, e in effetti così apparve ai contemporanei, un mero gesto di convenienza. In realtà si trattava di una necessità. C’era il rischio di venir accusata di opportunismo dagli altri stati europei – che uniti fronteggiavano il comune “nemico” musulmano – ma Venezia non poteva venir meno alla propria vocazione di potenza commerciale e marittima che fondava le basi della sua esistenza sui possedimenti in quel Levante dai difficili equilibri. Il Turco dunque, rappresentava certo una minaccia, un vicino forte e temibile con il quale confrontarsi e spesso scontrarsi, tuttavia esso era, altrettanto frequentemente, un insostituibile “partner” in affari, in grado di assicurare e mantenere i grandi privilegi dello “Stato da Mar”. Ecco che il viaggio di Bellini acquisiva dunque i crismi di un’ambasceria ufficiale, mentre quel Maometto II che egli andava a ritrarre e che aveva posto fine all’agonizzante Impero Bizantino (un’agonia peraltro aperta anche dalla conquista veneziana di Costantinopoli del 1204), così ansioso di farsi legittimare presso le corti europee, poteva trarne un beneficio insperato. Il quadro di Gentile Bellini, capolavoro assoluto (ora alla National Gallery di Londra) è esposto fino al 25 novembre 2007 a Palazzo Ducale alla mostra Venezia e l’Islam, 828-1797, assieme a quelli dei suoi grandi allievi, Mansueti e Carpaccio. Si tratta di un “dialogo” che comprende anche gli altri maestosi dipinti che si affacciano da sempre alle pareti della sala, a celebrare la “Battaglia di Lepanto” (di Andrea Vicentino, 1571) e le vittorie dei veneziani su Turchi ed Egiziani. Per la mostra, curata da Stefano Carboni, è un vero e proprio “ritorno a casa” dopo essere stata al Metropolitan di New York e all’Institut du Monde Arabe di Parigi. Essa documenta brillantemente - attraverso quasi duecento opere tra pittura, scultura, miniatura, cartografia, lavorazione dei metalli, vetri, gioielli, tessuti, tappeti, ceramiche e ad altro ancora - la portata delle relazioni tra Venezia e le varie realtà islamiche con le quali essa entrò in contatto: gli Arabi, i Turchi Mamelucchi, gli Ottomani, i Persiani…in un arco di tempo ampissimo che va dall’828, anno della leggendaria trasposizione delle reliquie di San Marco da Alessandra d’Egitto, fino alla fine della Repubblica, nel 1797. Un leit motiv che evidenzia, piuttosto che le differenze, le reciproche influenze, gli scambi, gli stretti rapporti e le straordinarie affinità che determinarono un reciproco arricchimento in tutte le arti, nelle scienze, nell’architettura e, in generale, in tutti gli aspetti della vita quotidiana.

he human experience is permeated by the endeavour, through any means and form, of explaining and investigated time, which influences our life. There is a cosmic, immense time in which man appears from the last fragments before the stroke of an hypothetic midnight arriving 24 hours (in reality 14 billion years) after the Big-Bang. And there is the time of human History – conceived as the memory that determines our identity (thus dating back to some thousand years ago) – that represents but a small part of the time of our planet. These are examples of unidirectional time (i.e. from the past till today), but there is also a time of memories, that is more important than the flowing of hours and minutes, or a time of sleep…that is potentially different for each of us. The notion of time has been repeatedly discussed also in relation with art and one may say that the time that has overseen the creation of works of art is very much different, depending on whether they belong to modernity or to other periods and cultures. Just like the time of emotions does not correspond to the time of a watch. The exhibition – as recalls his creator Axel Vervoordt, the Belgian collector who has lent the vast majority of the works on view – investigates these very aspects and places emphasis on timelessness, i.e. on the absence of “time”, the perception of vacuum and deep vacuum as source of everything, in one word: on the work of art that belongs to all times.

The symbolic seat of Venetian power, formerly the seat of the Doge and State Magistratures, the Palace is the supreme embodiment of Venetian civilisation. A masterpiece of gothic architecture, it reveals a grandiose stratification of building and ornamental elements. The interiors, superbly decorated by legions of artists, including Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Vittoria and Tiepolo, offer a range of different experiences: from the vast halls of political power to the interior finishings of the Doge's chambers, from the gloom of the prison cells to the brightness of the loggias overlooking St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. ’esperienza umana è permeata dal tentativo, attraverso ogni mezzo e forma, di spiegare e di relazionarsi con il tempo ed il tempo stesso condiziona la nostra vita. Esiste un tempo cosmico, immenso, in cui l’uomo appare solo a partire dagli ultimi frammenti prima dello scoccare di un’ipotetica mezzanotte che giunge 24 ore (in realtà 14 miliardi di anni) dopo il Big-Bang; e c’è il tempo della Storia umana – intesa come la memoria che determina la percezione della nostra identità (che risale quindi solo fino a qualche millennio di anni fa) – che non rappresenta se non una piccola parte di quello del nostro pianeta. Sono questi esempi di tempo unidirezionale (ovvero dal passato ad oggi), ma esiste anche un tempo dei ricordi, più importante dello scorrere di ore e minuti o un tempo del sonno, potenzialmente di diversa durata, per ognuno. La nozione di tempo è stata discussa molte volte anche in rapporto all’arte e si può dire che il tempo che ha presidiato alla creazione di opere d’arte è molto diverso a seconda che esse appartengano alla modernità o ad altri periodi o culture, così come il tempo delle emozioni non corrisponde a quello dell’orologio. La mostra - come ricorda il suo ideatore Axel Vervoordt, il collezionista belga prestatore della maggior parte dei capolavori esposti - indaga proprio questi aspetti e si concentra sull’a-temporalità (non-temporalità), ovvero sull’assenza di “tempo”, la sensazione di vuoto e il vuoto inteso come fonte di tutte le cose, in una parola: sull’opera d’arte che appartiene a tutti i tempi.

Enzo Cucchi It’s located in St. Mark’s Square, between “Ala Napoleonica” and “Procuratie Nuove”; it takes its origin from the collection Teodoro Correr gave to the City in 1830. The museum is divided into three sections: the neo-classical part, the historical part, about Venetian civilisation, and the Venetian picture gallery well displayed by Carlo Scarpa. Visitor will discover also the political, social and military history of Venice’s Serenissima Republic. Permanent exhibition: collections of weapons, games, marble and bronze sculptures, coins and medals. Paint-
The museum contains relics from various regional navies and from the Italian navy. The 2nd floor has a room dedicated to the Bucintoro, the gilded ceremonial sea craft of the Doge, used in the solemn ceremonies like the Venice’s wedding to the sea. It’s located in the former Torcello Bishops’ palace, Palazzo Giustiniani, a typical Venetian Gothic building. It houses glass collections arranged in a chronological order: here is the hugest historical exhibition of Murano’s glass, comprehensive of 15th to 20th centuries pieces. Permanent exhibition: unique extant copies of Murano glass and Renaissance pieces from the collections of Correr, Moli and Cicogna.
Reopened to the public on 27th October 2001, Palazzo Centanni is the birth place of the famous playwright Carlo Goldoni. The museum was founded on the bequeath of noble Venetian families who operated in the old colonial trade markets. It is located in the building of Procuratie Nuove in St. Mark’s Square and contains Roman and Greek finds dating from the 5th century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D. Permanent exhibition: collections of bronzes, ceramics, jewels and coins and very beautiful sculptures with many original Greek and Roman pieces.

Yet, she was also the first to shun the academic rules, according to which a miniature was to be realised with short and smooth strokes, preferring instead the quick stroke typical of Venetian painting. Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) was the most renowned Venetian artist in Europe in the eighteenth century thanks to the noteworthy and famous portraits of the Venetian and European society that perfectly interpreted the ideals of grace and the typical stylistic features of the ancien régime. The exhibition celebrates the 250th anniversary of the artist’s death and presents for the first time to the public an extraordinary selection of pastels, miniatures and drawings borrowed from outstanding museums and public and private collections of Italy and Europe.

So much was the Venetian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) celebrated during his life time for having provided Carlo Goldoni’s plays with precious music, so much seems his memory to have been removed today, even in his native city. Meritorious is thus the initiative of reviving the repertoire that had met wide consensus in Italy as well as abroad, thanks to the Quintet Wolf-Ferrari founded by Anna Lazzarini. The Quintet not only includes this fine pianist, but also the violinists Carlo Lazzari and Paola Carraro, Mario Paladin at the viola and Carlo Teodoro at the cello. Within the framework of a program that aims at extending the knowledge of music among young people, the Wolf-Ferrari ensemble organizes at the highschool “Liceo Ginnasio Marco Polo” in the Accademia area a series of events coordinated by Francesco Rizzoli and titled “The Saturday concerts at the highschool Liceo Marco Polo”. To the powerful Quintet Wolf-Ferrari and to its moving spirit Anna Lazzarini goes not only the wish that their activity continues with great artistic and public success but also deep congratulations!
The Galleria Regina, after ten years of activity now sets its identity making a precise choice: glass at the service of art. The historical seat has been restored and enlarged. San Giorgio dei Greci, the most ancient and most famous church in the West, testifies to the relationship that Venice had with the Greek community. There has always been a conspicuous presence of Greeks in Venice, but only after the fall of Constantinople (1453) did they build a brotherhood in the city. Venetians looked favourably on it, given the valour shown by the Greek light cavalry during the battle. For that reason, the Consiglio dei dieci (Council of the Ten) accepted the request for the building of a church for the Orthodox rite dedicated to San Giorgio, patron saint of servicemen. The church was built between 1587 and 1573 and decorated thanks to donations and bequests of the Venetian aristocracy which cultivated business and friendly relations with the community. It is simple and imposing, with a sloped tower bell built between 1587 and 1603 and decorated on the outside with a mosaic of Christ the Saviour. Its interior is adorned with works by the most outstanding Greek painters of the time, notable the ones on the iconostasis, the wall in front of the altar that, with its “regal doors”, represents the transition from the profane (the area of believers) to the sacred (the area of the altar) that are united thanks to the icons, the sacred images of saints, prophets but above all of Christ and of the Virgin Mary.
San Giorgio dei Greci, la chiesa greca più antica e famosa in Occidente, testimonia il rapporto che Venezia ebbe con questa comunità. La presenza di mercanti greci a Venezia fu sempre cospicua, ma solo dopo la caduta di Costantinopoli (1453) i Greci costituirono in città una Confraternita. I veneziani la consideravano benevolmente, visto il valore dimostrato in battaglia dai corpi di cavalleria leggera greci, e per questo il Consiglio dei X accolse la richiesta di edificare una chiesa per il rito ortodosso dedicata a San Giorgio, patrono dei combattenti. La chiesa fu costruita tra il 1539 e il 1573 e abbellita grazie anche a donazioni e lasciti dell’aristocrazia veneziana, che coltivava rapporti d’affari e d’amicizia con la comunità. E’ semplice ed imponente, dotata di un pittoresco campanile inclinato costruito tra il 1587 e il 1603, e decorata all’esterno da un mosaico con il Cristo Salvatore. L’interno è adornato con opere dei più importanti pittori greci dell’epoca: notevoli sono le opere sull’iconostasi, la paratia di fronte all’altare che con le sue “porte regali” rappresenta il passaggio dal profano (lo spazio dei fedeli) al sacro (lo spazio dell’altare) e li unisce grazie alle icone, le sacre immagini dei santi, dei profeti, ma soprattutto di Cristo e della Madonna.

Founded in the 12th century, this church was rebuilt during the 17th century and, at the beginning of the 18th century, it was modified also its aspect, facing now the Grand Canal: the new façade made by the architect Domenico Rossi. Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto when an imagine of the Virgin, found in a garden nearby, was brought in the church itself. In the middle of the 17th century, Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the Republic of Venice’s Senate decided that a church should have been built, dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for Health (salute). Between eleven plans presented, it was chosen the one by Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple having a central area on an octagonal plan, dominated by a huge dome with great arches. To see: “Nozze di Caanan” by J. Tintoretto, “Pentecoste” by Tiziano, “La Madonna Bizantina” work from the 13th-century Greek-Byzantine school. According to the legend, this is one of the eight churches founded by St. Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII century, and dedicated to the Virgin who appeared in a dream to the Bishop. However, the church, as we can see it nowadays, was built in 1492 by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance. One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s architecture, and by some considered his masterpiece, this church was built as a result of a motion carried by the Senate after the plague that struck Venice in 1576. The old church, which belonged to the nuns of the convent bearing the same name, is located near the main church, which was built by Codussi between 1480 and 1500. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings. Built by the Carmelites and dedicated to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade, made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style. Once there was also a marvellous vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by Austrian bombs. To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest monument of this type preserved in the lagoon. The simple and solemn interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics. To see: the mosaics of the small apse on

The church of the Jesuits was built between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they took the place of the Jesuits, in order to replace the small church that still stands beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author of the church’s design and of the internal decoration, assisted by two great artists of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with its single nave, side chapels and a deep presbytery, is beautifully balanced. To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling by G.B. Tiepolo, the altarpiece by Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by Tintoretto.

The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario was founded before 1071, but nothing remains of the primitive building, due to the devastating fire that swept through the Rialto area in 1514. The current building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that used the church premises. To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by Pordenone and the frescoes in the cupola came to light again during the restoration work.

These are the elements with which the doge and the dogaressa will salute the multitude of people who crowd the shores of the Canal Grande awaiting their passage. The doge and her wife, sitting at the stern of the parade, will raise their hands as any sovereign would do today on solemn occasions. As every year, the ‘Regata Storica’, the most traditional Venetian event, takes place on the first Sunday of September bringing back the pomp of the Serenissima Republic. The Historic Regatta lasts an entire day and it develops into two parts. The first part, the most appreciated by tourists, sees along the Canal Grande the parade of period boats with ceremonially dressed rowers slowly plunging the oars into the water. Whereas the second part, the most lively and followed by Venetians, is the boat race which sees the participation of the most famous Venetian rowers. This longstanding event dates back to January 10th, 1315, during the reign of Doge Giovanni Soranzio. The boat race is preceded by a parade recalling the triumphal way with which in 1489 the Venetian Republic used to receive Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus. While the historic parade has only a picturesque value and recalls the long-past economic and political power of Venice on the sea, the regattas are still today the top event of the athletic competition season. The route of the race starts at Riva degli Schiavoni and ends at Punta della Salute where, after the ‘cavata’ – the initial sprint of the race -, the public looks forward to seeing which boat will enter first the Canal Grande since it will probably be the one also winning the regatta.

Ritorna anche quest’anno, la prima domenica di settembre, la Regata Storica: la più tradizionale delle manifestazioni veneziane che ripercorre i fasti della Serenissima Repubblica. La festa, che dura un’intera giornata, si divide in due: una parte, più seguita dai turisti, che snoda lungo il Canale il corteo acqueo delle barche d’epoca con vogatori che affondano lentamente i remi nell’acqua, anche loro vestiti da gran cerimonia. La parte più viva, più seguita dai veneziani, è quella della gara di barche, nella quale i nomi celebri della voga veneta si sfidano dopo un anno intero di dileggio sulle pagine dei giornali locali. Un evento che si ripete da secoli e che si fa risalire al 10 gennaio 1315 durante il dogado di Giovanni Soranzo. Il corteo che precede la competizione rievoca le trionfali accoglienze tributate nel 1489 dalla Serenissima a Caterina Cornaro, regina di Cipro. Ma se il corteo storico ha ormai un significato prettamente pittoresco, le regate rappresentano ancor oggi il culmine della stagione agonistica della voga. Il loro percorso si snoda dalla partenza, in Riva degli Schiavoni, alla Punta della Salute. Qui, terminata la "cavata" (lo scatto di partenza), il pubblico attende con ansia di vedere quale barca entri per prima in Canal Grande, visto che spesso è quella che poi si aggiudicherà la Regata.

hey are considered by some, rightly, the docks of Venice. This part of the city represents the best that can be achieved in the recovery of industrial archaeology of the beginning of the century. A recovery – take for example the ‘Mulino Stucky’: former factory transformed into a hotel and private dwellings – that has been coupled with the work of renowned architects like Ignazio Gardella, Gino Valle, Carlo Aymonino, Aldo Rossi, Avaro Siza and Raphael Moneo. Thanks to the works carried out, the island in the island , that till not too long ago was called “the island of seals”, hit by a continuous north wind, is reborn and has become the island of the vips, the Notting Hill of the Lagoon. The island, however, has remained a tranquil place on a human scale. Quiet in winter and summer alike. The popular soul has been accompanied by other different souls of the cultural intelligentsia, of artists, literates and of upper sophisticated classes. This place is seldom reached by tourists. Aria metropolitana Fino a poco tempo fa era chiamata “l’isola delle foche”: schiaffeggiata da un vento di tramontana che non le dà tregua, la Giudecca rinasce e diventa l’isola dei vip.
ualcuno li ha considerati i docks di Venezia e a ragione. Nel senso che questa parte della città rappresenta quel che meglio si può fare nel recupero dell’archeologia industriale d’inizio secolo. Ma oltre al recupero (per tutti il Molino Stucky: da fabbrica a hotel e abitazioni private) sulla Giudecca è calata la mano dei grandi architetti, da Ignazio Gardella a Gino Valle, da Carlo Aymonino ad Aldo Rossi, da Avaro Siza a Raphael Moneo. E grazie a questi interventi l’isola nell’isola, fino a poco tempo fa chiamata “l’isola delle foche”, schiaffeggiata da un vento di tramontana che non le dà tregua, rinasce e diventa l’isola dei vip, una Notting Hill lagunare. L’isola è rimasta tranquilla, a misura d’uomo. Silenziosa d’inverno quanto in estate. Ad un’anima popolare e popolana, che ancora c’è, si sono aggiunte altre anime. Quelle dell’intellighentia culturale, degli artisti, dei letterati, delle classi alte e raffinate. Qui il turista arriva poco. Una volta, lungo le fondamenta sul tormentato Canale della Giudecca, passeggiava Gabriele D’annunzio, Filippo Tommaso Martinetti, Luigi Nono, Francois Mitterand. Oggi si vedono attori che con calma trascorrono le loro giornate al sole sotto la pergola del Cipriani. Senza preoccuparsi di guardie del corpo e fastidiosi ammiratori.

Ingredients for four people: 200 gr. veal fillet, 1/2 spoon of hazel-nut oil 4 quenelles white rice, 1/2 spoon of horse-radish For the sauce: 30 gr. of balsamic vinegar 70 ml of sweet wine 1 spoon of grape-stone, sesame-oil, parsley Chopped black olives Keep the fillet at a temperature of -3°C. Prepare a risotto only with chicken broth, let it cool down. Pour a bit of grape-stone oil into a plate. Cut a few thin slices from the filet, place them on the plate and add a bit of oil. Cover with clingfilm. When the fillet slices have reached room temperature add some salt. The sauce will be obtained by mixing the ingredients with a whisk in a bowl. Dress the rice with fresh ground pepper. Prepare some rice quenelle, place the fillet slices on the rice, coat with a thin layer of sauce and decorate with horseradish, olive pâté and parsley.

E chi si avvicina all’alimentazione cruda inizia ad usare terminali nervosi diversi, riscopre sensazioni sopite dal tempo. Il crudo suscita emozioni articolate, varie, globali. Gusti, sapori, colori, aromi e profumi: tutto sembra diverso, quasi nuovo. La crudezza è quindi una riscoperta, è un grande balzo indietro nel primitivo dell’uomo. Ciò nonostante l’ alimento fresco, crudo, è una miniera di sensazioni, ed è sicuramente un atto d’amore essere in grado di offrire del cibo crudo sano perché nel caso contrario è sicura una tossinfezione.

LA RICETTA CARPACCIO AL VINO Ingredienti per quattro persone: 200g filetto vitello, 1/2 cucchiaio cren, 1/2 cucchiaio di olio di nocciole 4 quenelle risotto in bianco Per la salsa: 30g aceto balsamico 70 ml vino dolce, olio sesamo, prezzemolo, olive nere tritate, 1 cucchiaio olio di vinaccioli Conservare il filetto a -3°C. Preparare un risotto in bianco con brodo di pollo. Far raffreddare. Bagnare il piatto con olio di vinaccioli. Tagliare delle fettine fini dal filetto, porle nel piatto e coprirle con un filo d'olio di vinaccioli, sigillare con pellicola. Quando le fettine sono a temperatura ambiente condire con sale. Per la salsa mescolare con una frustina gli ingredienti in una bowl. Condire il riso con pepe macinato fresco. Preparare delle quenelle di riso, mettere le fettine di carne sul riso, nappare con la salsa e decorare con cren, patè d'olive e prezzemolo.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SECTION OF THE CIVICI MUSEI OF TREVISO AT SANTA CATERINA

The Archaeological section of the Civici Musei of Treviso, open to the public since June, is hosted at the Santa Caterina building, renowned for keeping the frescoed cycle of the Stories of Sant’Orsola, masterpiece by Tomaso da Modena. A part from the Archaeological Section, the Museo di Santa Caterina offers to its visitor also a spectacular selection of its extremely rich painting and sculpture collections including works by the masters of the Romanic and Gothic, by Tomaso da Modena, Tiziano, Cima, Lotto, Rosalba Carriera, Martini: a synthesis of what will be one of the forthcoming appointments at the Pinacotheca, the result of the reorganization of the museums of Treviso.
Ponte Sant’Antonio, che unisce i Sestieri di Castello e San Marco, anticamente era detto di San Lio, conducendo – per chi arriva da Rialto – verso la chiesa di San Leone. E’ questo il luogo in cui la tradizione vuole sia avvenuto un particolare miracolo. In queste zone viveva infatti un uomo empio, che si faceva beffe dei sacramenti e conduceva una vita scandalosa. L’uomo era appartenente alla Confraternita di San Giovanni Evangelista, con sede nell’omonima scuola. Un giorno un suo amico, confratello nella congregazione, gli chiese di portare la croce in una processione che doveva condurre alla sepoltura un membro della Confraternita. “Sai – gli disse l’amico, che sperava sinceramente in un ravvedimento dell’uomo – un giorno la croce dovrà onorare anche i tuoi funerali”. “Non voglio certo accompagnarla – rispose questi – né mi interessa che essa venga ad accompagnarmi”. Ma venne anche per lui, inevitabilmente, il momento del trapasso, senza ch’egli desse alcun segno di pentimento per la propria condotta. Una volta arrivati al ponte di San Lio per entrare nella parrocchia del morto, però, la croce non ne volle sapere di muoversi, ed anzi divenne talmente pesante che non ci fu forza umana in grado di smuoverla da lì. Fu allora che il buon amico ricordò le parole dell’uomo, e riferendole agli altri fece conoscere la ragione di tale incredibile resistenza. Rimossa per essere riportata alla Scuola, la croce si rifece leggera come sempre. Ma da quel momento fu stabilito che non la si dovesse più portare in processione se non nelle solennità maggiori.

Ponte Sant’Antonio, linking Sestiere (district) of Castello and Sestiere of San Marco, was once called Ponte di San Lio, since it led – from Rialto – to the church of San Leone. Tradition wants that in this place a particular miracle took place. It was in this area that an impious man lived who laughed at sacraments and led a scandalous life. He belonged to the Confraternity of San Giovanni Evangelista based in the homonymous school. One day a friend of his, his brother in the congregation, asked him to bear the cross in a burial procession of a member of the Confraternity. “You know – said to him the friend who truly hoped in a repentance of the man – one day the cross will be honouring also your funerals”. “I certainly do not want to accompany it – he answered – nor do I want it to accompany me”. However, as it is inevitable, the day of passing came also for him without any sign of repentance for his conduct. Once the procession arrived at Ponte San Lio heading towards the dead’s parish, the cross didn’t want to move and it became so heavy that no one was able to budge it from there. It was then that the good friend remembered the words of the man and explained to the others the reason of such an incredible resistance. Once the cross was removed to be taken back to the Congregation it suddenly returned as light as usual. However, from then on, it was decided that the cross was never to be borne in processions again except for certain solemn occasions.

Padua celebrates Fulvio Pendini. The centenary of the birth is the occasion to rediscover a protagonist of the cultural scene of the city and country. His activity finds his place in the past century artistic scenario of Padua: the “cantiere del Novecento al Bo”, wanted by Carlo Anti and directed by Gio Ponti, and the activities of the “Gruppo N”, leading exponent of the optical-kinetic movements of the first sixties. Fulvio Pendini is to be placed between those two periods, thus embodying the ideal figure of an artist who as been devoted, during his entire life, to painting starting from classicism through the lines of Giotto, to the use of more primitive twentieth-century lines based on the bustle of popular feasts in squares and yards and finally to stylised Medieval representations of Padua and other cities.

The exhibition of Mascherini is an opportunity to retrace a route in the twentieth century art expressed in sculpture as well as in painting and architecture. The single ticket combining a visit to the exhibition on show at the Pescherie Centrali with a visit to the Museo Revoltella. Indeed, the city itinerary is coupled to a journey in the twentieth century art with all its most interesting forms of expression. The thorough retrospective dedicated to Mascherini is, with its structure, also a journey within the Italian and European sculpture of the Nineteenth century. La mostra di Mascherini come occasione per percorrere un itinerario d’autore dentro l’arte del Novecento espressa nella scultura ma anche nella pittura e nell’architettura. Il biglietto unico che unisce la visita alla mostra allestita nelle ex Pescherie Centrali con il vicino Museo Revoltella, oltre all’itinerario proposto in città, consente infatti di immergersi dentro l’arte del Novecento in molte delle sue più interessanti espressioni. L’ampia retrospettiva dedicata a Mascherini è, per sua struttura, anche un viaggio dentro la scultura italiana ed europea del Novecento. Il percorso della mostra inizia, però, al Museo Revoltella, dove il visitatore ha modo di vedere, attraverso alcuni “monumenti” di scultura del primo ‘900 il contesto storico in cui inizia la carriera di Mascherini.

Padova celebra Fulvio Pendini. Il centenario della nascita è l’occasione per riscoprire un protagonista della scena culturale cittadina e nazionale. La sua attività si colloca nello scenario artistico padovano del secolo scorso: il cantiere del Novecento al Bo, voluto dal rettore Carlo Anti e diretto da Gio Ponti, e l’attività del Gruppo N, esponente di punta dei movimenti ottico-cinetici nei primi anni sessanta. Fulvio Pendini si situa tra questi due momenti, incarnando la figura ideale di un artista che si è dedicato per tutta la vita alla pittura partendo da un parco classicismo neo-giottesco, per poi adottare una linea di primitivismo novecentista incentrata sull’animazione di feste popolari entro scenari di piazze e cortili e approdare infine alla rappresentazione stilizzata di matrice medioevale di Padova e di altre città.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the death of Paolo De Poli, his sons have recently donated to the Musei Civici-Museo d’Arte Medioevale e Moderna (Civic Museums-Museum of Medieval and Modern Art) of the Municipality of Padua, an outstanding number of works that are added to the ones that are already part of the civic collections. They are representative works of the entire artistic path of the master, some of which had been presented at the Biennale of Venice and at the Triennale of Milan: saucers, bowls, trays, vases as well as decorative panels and sculptures. The works donated – presented to the public in the areas dedicated to temporary exhibitions of Palazzo Zuckermann – include a small panel testifying to De Poli’s bond with Fulvio Pendini.
