Ninety years ago the legendary Western hero died in Denver. When he got to Venice in 1906, Venetians ran up in crowds to see him and the Indian chiefs partnering in his show. There he was, with a confident look but with unsteady moves, getting onto the boat.

Novant’anni fa moriva a Denver il leggendario eroe del West. Quando, nel 1906, arrivò a Venezia folle di veneziani accorsero per vedere lui e i capi indiani partner nel suo spettacolo. E lui, sicuro nello sguardo ma incerto nei movimenti, salì in barca.

hey got to Venice as if, having left their horses for a moment, they were going to stage the Wild West Show. Buffalo Bill, the Stetson on his head, wore a blouse and striped trousers; the Indian chiefs wore feathered headgears while two of them were raising the feather.

From April to May 1906 they were about to finish the last Italian tour of a show celebrating the epic atmosphere of the American West.

500 horses, 800 men, 30 wild horses, this is what the adverts promised. Thousands

Buffalo Bill, in testa lo Stetson, portava casacca e pantaloni a righe; i capi indiani indossavano il copricapo piumato mentre altri due inalberavano la piuma.

Tra aprile e maggio 1906 stavano concludendo l’ultima tournée italiana d’uno spettacolo rievocante l’epica atmosfera dell’Ovest americano. 500 cavalli, 800 uomini, 30 cavalli selvaggi, garan-

tiva la pubblicità. Migliaia di veneziani riempirono i treni per andare a Treviso ad ammirare il colonnello William Frederick Cody, soprannominato Buffalo Bill, e il suo Selvaggio West che, da decenni, percorrevano il mondo intero, esibendosi sulle migliori piazze.

La Compagnia, giunta per la prima volta in Europa nel 1889, ottenne strepitosi consensi esibendosi davanti alla Regina Vittoria d’Inghilterra e durante l’Esposizione Universale a Parigi. L’anno successivo raggiunse Roma, Napoli, Milano approdando a Verona con gli indiani Arraphaos e Brulé esperti in danze tribali, drappelli di cow boys, amazzoni e Annie Oakley, considerata la miglior tiratrice del West. Davano due spettacoli: alle due e mezza del pomeriggio e alle otto di sera. Il prezzo del biglietto d’ingresso variava dalle 2 alle 8 lire per i posti riservati.

Buffalo Bill che entrava in scena sul cavallo bianco, al suono d’una marcia militare, veniva descritto dai giornali d’epoca con «una bella testa energica e fiera di vecchio, dal pizzo caratteristico e dalle chiome fluenti. Fa con rara eleganza i saluti alla folla e dice brevi parole di presentazione».

Nato in una fattoria dello Iowa nel 1846, divenne postino per il Pony Express, esploratore del generale Custer, cacciatore di bisonti per sfamare gli operai che costruivano la linea ferroviaria dal Kansas al Pacifico.

of Venetians packed the trains to go to Treviso and admire colonel William Frederick Cody, nicknamed Buffalo Bill, and his Wild West. The latter had, for decades, travelled the whole world performing on the best squares.

The Company got to Europe for the first time in 1889 and became extremely successful.

They performed before Queen Victoria of England and during the Universal Exposition in Paris.

The following year they made it to Rome, Naples, Milan, and played in Verona with Arrapaho and Brulé Indians, experts at tribal dances, as well as with a handful of cow boys, horsewomen and Annie Oakley, who was thought to be the best markswoman in the West.

They would hold two shows: one at half past two in the afternoon and one at eight in the evening. The price for the ticket went from 2 lira for the reserved seats at the 8 p.m. show.

Buffalo Bill, appearing on the stage on a white horse, to the sound of a military march, was described in the newspapers as follows: «the firm and proud head of an old man, with a typical pointed beard and flowing hair. He greets the crowd with rare elegance and gives a short presentation speech».

Born on a farm in Iowa in 1846, he became a postman for Pony Express, a scout for general Custer, as well as a buffalo hunter to feed the workers building the railway from Kansas to the Pacific.

He became famous for having killed the Indian chief Tall Bull in battle, was the hero in a series of folk stories and played himself on stage.

He was being an actor in winter and a scout in summer, when he organised this scenic show, in which in order to reproduce the stagecoach attacks, a train holdup in the prairie and the battle of Little Big Horn, such celebrities as Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickcock, and the old Sioux chief Sitting Bull were engaged. The point of greatest interest was when Buffalo Bill and the cow boys would save the pale faces tied to the torture pole by screaming Indians.

Yet, in the year when Cody came to Venice the Wild West Show was already going stale, and in 1913 the debts run up led to bankruptcy. Cody, tired and almost an alcoholic, passed away in Denver (Colorado) in 1917, exactly 90 years ago.

The papers back then reported that, after getting off the gondola, the small group of people went to a trattoria to eat fish-fry and polenta.

This delicacy would be remembered forever by Buffalo Bill and the redskins, who were used to chewy buffalo steaks.

Ma nell’anno che Cody venne a Venezia, il Wild West Show dava già segni di stanchezza, tanto che nel 1913, visti i debiti accumulati, andò in fallimento. Lui, stanco e quasi alcolizzato, si spense a Denver (Colorado) nel 1917, giusto 90 anni fa.

Riferiscono le cronache del tempo che, nel corso della visita a Venezia, sceso dalla gondola, il gruppetto andò in una trattoria a mangiare una frittura di pesce con polenta. Per Buffalo Bill e i pellirossa, abituati alle coriacee bistecche di bisonte, una ghiottoneria che rimarrà loro impressa per sempre.

La fama di William Cody si accrebbe di continuo, arrivando al cinema fin dall’epoca del muto (Paul Newman ne fece un affarista in Buffalo Bill e gli indiani, regia di Robert Altman, 1976) e pure nei fumetti. In Italia, il serial Bufalo Bill (una sola effe come la canzone di Francesco De Gregori), disegnato da Carlo Cossio su testi di Luigi Grecchi venne pubblicato dal settimanale L’Intrepido tra il 1951 e il 1964.

In Italy, the serial Bufalo Bill (one F only, as in the song of Italian singer-songwriter Francesco De Gregori), with drawings by Carlo Cossio and lines

MARCO POLO: ACCOUNT OF AN EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGE The exhibition displays over one-hundred drawings by Guido Fuga and Lele Vinello, long-time partners of Hugo Pratt, featured in the book „Marco Polo: Narration of an extraordinary voyage“ (Supernova, 2006). Rather than the famous Venetian wayfarer himself, it is the very characters depicted who act as witnesses to his passage through Asia and who narrate his adventures and evoke the remote lands he visited: the Gobi desert, Ceylon, Byzantium...or the Battle of Curzola.

The voices of the protagonists of one of the most extraordinary voyages in history take on a new form and life thanks to a complete mosaic of words and images which traces the biography of eight-century-old Corto Maltese and around him conjures up exotic impressions, sceneries of faraway lands, so dearly loved by Hugo Pratt. Some characters include the pilgrim and the templar, the galley commander and the caravaneer, Pope Gregory X and the Mongolian Emperor Kubla Khan and Rustichello da Pisa of course, who gave the “Milione” its literary form.

MARCO POLO: TESTIMONIANZE DI UN VIAGGIO STRAORDINARIO In mostra gli oltre cento disegni eseguiti da Guido Fuga e Lele Vinello, collaboratori storici di Hugo Pratt, per il volume “Marco Polo. Testimonianze di un viaggio straordinario” (Supernova, 2006). Più che il famosissimo viaggiatore veneziano, pare siano piuttosto i vari personaggi in essi rappresentati, testimoni del suo passaggio nelle terre dell’Asia, a raccontarci le sue avventure e a evocare le remote lande da lui visitate: il deserto di Gobi, Ceylon, Bisanzio…o la battaglia di Curzola. Le voci dei protagonisti di uno dei viaggi più straordinari della storia riprendono forma e vita grazie a un vero e proprio mosaico di parole e immagini che traccia la biografia di un Corto Maltese di otto secoli fa e raccoglie intorno a lui quelle suggestioni esotiche, quegli scenari di terre lontane tanto cari a Pratt. Ed ecco il pellegrino e il templare, il comandante di galea e il carovaniere, papa Gregorio X e l’imperatore dei Mongoli Kubilai Khan e naturalmente Rustichello da Pisa, che diede forma letteraria al “Milione”.

on Rembrandt e Goya, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) è uno dei massimi esponenti di tutti i tempi dell’arte incisoria. Luterano convinto - secondo il quale il progresso dei mezzi tecnici è concesso al “genio” umano direttamente da Dio - egli anticipò tuttavia forse più le idee calviniste, secondo cui ogni uomo deve guadagnare lo status “eletto” col proprio operare pratico, nella consapevolezza di un destino comunque determinato da Dio. Come Lutero, che avvertì la necessità di una riforma religiosa, anch’egli si fece motore di un’altrettanto importante riforma: quella dell’arte nordica, traendo ispirazione soprattutto dai suoi viaggi in Italia, che lo plasmarono facendone un artista “erudito”. Due itinerari a più tappe, nel 1494-95 il primo e, a distanza di undici anni il secondo, lo condussero a Venezia, Padova, Mantova, Roma, Bologna e gli fecero conoscere, fra le altre, le opere di Mantegna, Bellini e Piero della Francesca. Intuì che Umanesimo e Riforma avrebbero potuto completarsi, nella coesistenza di rigore formale e purezza estetica, di dogma scientifico e devozione religiosa. L’arte nordica – mediante il solco da lui tracciato per la nascita anche qui di una cultura rinascimentale - avrebbe colmato la distanza grazie al connubio arte-scienza. La sua straordinaria attività artistica contribuì a superare l’idea di un’opera d’arte creata non più esclusivamente per similitudine di un archetipo, bensì dalla relazione tra l’artista e il mondo che lo circonda, poiché originale, libera e superiore. Spostando l’attenzione dalla prassi artigianale all’attitudine, egli trasformò la sua bottega in un vero e proprio “laboratorio di ricerca”: un’officina di idee, sperimentazioni, elaborazioni tecniche, al cui centro, come per Leonardo e Michelangelo, non era più solo il risultato, ma il “progetto”. Proprio “Officina Dürer” è il titolo della mostra che, fino al 30 giugno 2007, espone al Museo Diocesano cento tra le più importanti e famose incisioni e xilografie del grande artista di Norimberga - l’Apocalisse (1498), la Grande (1511) e la Piccola Passione xilografica (1509-11), Il Cavaliere, la Morte, il Diavolo (1513), la Melencolia I (1514) - arricchite e rese uniche dai suoi importanti studi su corpo umano e prospettiva.

A true Lutheran, according to whom the progress of technical tools is granted to the wit of man directly by God, he most likely prefigured the Calvinist idea according to which each man must earn his “elected” status through his practical deeds, under the awareness of a destiny determined invariably by God. Like Luther, who felt the necessity of a religious reform, he too became the promoter of an equally important reform: that of Northern art, taking inspiration especially from his trips to Italy, which molded him into a “learned” artist. Two multi-leg itineraries, in 1494-95 the first and, after 11 years the second, led him to Venice, Padua, Mantua, Rome, Bologna and familiarized him with, among the other masterpieces, those of Mantegna, Bellini and Piero della Francesca. He understood that Humanism and Reformation could complete one another under the co-existence of formal rigour and aesthetic purity, of scientific dogma and religious devotion. Northern Art – following the path set by him for the birth of a similar renaissance culture – would have redressed the gap thanks to the union of science and art. His extraordinary artistic production helped surpass the idea of a work of art created not just exclusively by similitude to an archetype but by the relationship between the artist and the world surrounding him, which is original, free and superior.

Shifting attention from the role of craftsmanship to that of approach, he transformed his workshop into an actual “research lab” : an workshop of ideas, experiments, technical elaboration, the center of which, like in Leonardo’s and Michelangelo’s case, was no longer the result alone but rather the project itself. “Dürer Workshop” is the actual title of the exhibition which, at the Museo Diocesano until June 30th 2007, will display one-hundred among the most important engravings and woodcuts of the great artist from Nurnberg – the Apocalypse (1498), The Great (1511) and the Little Passion (1509-11), Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Melencolia I (1514) – enriched and made unique by his important studies on the human body and on perspective.

Museo Correr 02.02.2007 - 20.02.2007 rganized in concomitance with the Carnival , the exhibition proposes an imaginary voyage through the historical phases of the „mask“ and its use in theatre, through the creations of Amleto (1915/1962) and Donato Sartori.

The two Paduan artists – father and son – are known throughout the world for the research work carried out regarding this ancient, symbolical and evocative instrument. We go from extraordinary Ancient Greek representations to ones from the Roman Empire, from the evocative medieval world to the Commedia dell’Arte, reaching Goldoni’s Teatro Nuovo. The masks created for the most important representations of Giorgio Strehler, Eduardo De Filippo, Ferruccio Soleri, Dario Fo, up to Oskarson and Moni Ovaia. The event represents a prelude to the 39th International Theatre Festival which will complete the review on the works of Carlo Goldoni, whose birth bicentennial takes place this year. The exhibition is promoted by the Biennale di Venezia and organized by the International Mask Museum, in concerted effort with the Municipality of Venice and the cooperation of the Musei Civici Veneziani.

I due artisti padovani – padre e figlio – sono conosciuti in tutto il mondo per la loro opera di ricerca intorno a questo strumento antico, simbolico ed evocativo. Si va dalle straordinarie rappresentazioni dell’antica Grecia a quelle dell’Impero Romano, dall’evocativo mondo medioevale alla commedia dell’arte, fino al teatro nuovo di Goldoni. Sono le maschere create per le più importanti rappresentazioni, quelle di Giorgio Strehler, Eduardo De Filippo, Ferruccio Soleri, Dario Fo, fino a Oskarson e Moni Ovaia. L’evento rappresenta un preludio al 39. Festival Internazionale del Teatro che completerà la riflessione proprio sull’opera di Carlo Goldoni, del quale ricorre quest’anno il bicentenario della nascita. La mostra è promossa dalla Biennale di Venezia e realizzata dal Museo Internazionale della Maschera, con il concorso del Comune di Venezia e la collaborazione dei Musei Civici Veneziani.

The symbolic seat of Venetian power, formerly the seat of the Doge and State Magistratures, the Palace is the supreme embodiment of Venetian civilisation. A masterpiece of gothic architecture, it reveals a grandiose stratification of building and ornamental elements.

The interiors, superbly decorated by legions of artists, including Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Vittoria and Tiepolo, offer a range of different experiences: from the vast halls of political power to the interior finishings of the Doge's chambers, from the gloom of the prison cells to the brightness of the loggias overlooking St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon.

Angiolo Volpe L’aria a Colori

The Library, designed by Jacopo Sansovino, was built and decorated between 1537 and 1560, at the request of the Procurators of St. Mark, in order to receive Latin and Greek codes, gifts

by Cardinal Bessarione. Nowadays, the Library houses a priceless book collection of Venice’s Serenissima Republic.

Permanent exhibition: “La Sapienza” by Tiziano and the Library Room decorated with twenty-one tondos on the arched ceiling and philosophers’ portraits on the walls by Tintoretto and Veronese.

It’s located in the former Torcello Bishops’ palace, Palazzo Giustiniani, a typical Venetian Gothic building. It houses glass collections arranged in a chronological order: here is the hugest historical exhibition of Murano’s glass, comprehensive of 15th to 20th centuries pieces.

This particulary charming museum, located in a Gothic palace, keeps the original usage given by Mariano Fortuny who created there his own atelier of photography, set-designing and staging. The museum is entirely dedicated to the history of the lace production in Burano. It is situated next to the school of this art, school established in 1872 by the countess Adriana Marcello Zon. The eighteenth-century building contains a splendid series of polychrome marbles, frescoed ceilings depicting the exploits of the Mocenigo family, which provided the Venetian Republic with seven Doges. The building houses the seat of the Study Centre for the History of Textile and Costume.

Officina Durer The museum contains many finds of Venetian convents and churches and is located in the St. Apollonia convent (12th-13th century). A rare jewel of Romanic architecture, the cloister contains the Lapidario Marciano with Roman and Byzantine stone fragments.

City Exhibitions PUBLISHING BETWEEN SWITZERLAND AND ITALY

The Galleria Regina, after ten years of activity now sets its identity making a precise choice: glass at the service of art. The historical seat has been restored and enlarged.

The aim of Franco Regina and his staff is forwarded to the stimulating project to bring near two different categories of artists: glass artists, who design and realise the pieces personally, and other artists who assign the creation of their works to a glass masters team.

Promoted by the Swiss Institute and Rome in cooperation with the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana under the patronage of the Swiss Consulate General in Milan, the exhibition presents, through the history and the works of two families of printmakers, the Agnelli of Milan (who moved to Lugano in the 1700s) and the Hoepli of Thurgau (in Milan in the 1800s), the tie between Swiss and Italian publishing from the 1700s to today. In displaying original volumes from the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, the works that have a particular and singular reference to Venice are highlighted.

Maurizio Galimberti He privileges the research photography through the concept of the rithm and movement, typic of the futurists and the cubists. He begins using a Widelux camera with a research “on the road”. Then, since about 18 years he has been using permanently Polaroid.

The Foundation was set up in 1869 upon the bequeath by Earl Giovanni Querini Stampalia. This well-preserved building is built in perfect and original Venetian style and contains a rich library and a fascinating picture gallery.

The church of San Giobbe in Venice is the only known church named after this saint. Job became proverbial for his patience, put to the test by the suffering and woes dealt to him by Satan to measure his faith, which remained steadfast nonetheless. He represents the poor and the disinherited, but is also one of the saints invoked against the plague, as he was affected and survived a similar illness. The church, which belongs to a 14th century complex meant to house the needy, is poor and simple, typically Franciscan in the use of terracotta, its sombre reds brightened by the white marble portal. The portal’s lunette represents San Francesco and San Giobbe defending the landscape behind them from rays-arrows given off by a solar globe, a biblical image of the plague contagion inferred from the classics: in fact, in the past, it was thought that the plague would hit much like the Sun Gold Apollo‘s arrows. Because no side chapels could be opened along the right wall of the church, three altar pieces which would create a perfectly three-dimensional illusory space were commissioned to Vittore Carpaccio, to Giovanni Bellini and to Marco Basaiti, viewable today at the Gallerie dell’Accademia.

La chiesa di San Giobbe a Venezia è l’unica che si conosca intitolata a questo Santo.

Giobbe è diventato proverbiale per la sua pazienza, messa a dura prova dalle sofferenze e dalle disgrazie che Satana gli inviò per misurare la sua fede, rimasta incrollabile nonostante tutto. Egli è il rappresentante del povero e del diseredato, ma è anche uno dei santi invocati contro la peste, in quanto fu colpito e sopravvisse ad un’analoga malattia. La chiesa, appartenente ad un complesso trecentesco che doveva accogliere le persone indigenti, è povera e semplice, tipicamente francescana nell’uso del cotto. Il rosso cupo viene rallegrato dal bianco portale marmoreo. La lunetta di questo rappresenta San Francesco e San Giobbe che difendono il paesaggio dietro di loro dai raggi-frecce emanati da un globo solare, immagine biblica del contagio della peste desunta dai classici: nell’antichità, infatti, si era convinti che la peste colpisse come le frecce di Apollo, il dio del sole.

Poiché sulla parete destra della chiesa non si potevano aprire cappelle laterali, si commissionarono tre pale, che ricreavano uno spazio illusorio perfettamente tridimensionale, a Vittore Carpaccio, a Giovanni Bellini e a Marco Basaiti. Le pale sono oggi visibili alle Gallerie dell’Accademia.

The building has five large domes. The church is decorated inside with gilded mosaics and treasures representing stories from the Bible.

Founded in the 12th century, this church was rebuilt during the 17th century and, at the beginning of the 18th century, it was modified also its aspect, facing now the Grand Canal: the new façade made by the architect Domenico Rossi. The church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

It is an example of Gothic architecture in Venice built between the 14th and 15th century and laid out in the form of a Latin cross: it is composed of three naves divided by twelve huge pillars.

Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto when an imagine of the Virgin, found in a garden nearby, was brought in the church itself. It is a typical Venetian Gothic religious buildings. It was Tintoretto’s parish church and he is buried with his family in the chapel to the right of the high altar.

In the middle of the 17th century, Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the Republic of Venice’s Senate decided that a church should have been built, dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for Health (salute). Between eleven plans presented, it was chosen the one by Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple having a central area on an octagonal plan, dominated by a huge dome with great arches.

To see: “Nozze di Caanan” by J. Tintoretto, “Pentecoste” by Tiziano, “La Madonna Bizantina” work from the 13th-century Greek-Byzantine school.

Events: every year on November 21 the inhabitants process to the Salute for a service of thanksgiving for deliverence from the palgue.

According to the legend, this is one of the eight churches founded by St. Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII century, and dedicated to the Virgin who appeared in a dream to the Bishop. However, the church, as we can see it nowadays, was built in 1492

by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.

The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s architecture, and by some considered his masterpiece, this church was built as a result of a motion carried by the Senate after the plague that struck Venice in 1576.

It is a votive temple dedicated to the Redeemer.

It was built between the 14th and the 15th centuries and it is the largest church in Venice. After S. Marco, this was considered an “official” temple: it was used for the solemn obsequies of the dead Doges. The magnificent interior is in the form of a Latin cross, it has three naves with a cross vault and a polygonal apse.

It is one of the most beautiful VenetianByzantine buildings of the 12th century.

The exterior of the hexagonal apse is very interesting, both for its architectural beauty and the wealth of its decorative elements. Five columns of Greek marble divide the interior into three naves.

The old church, which belonged to the nuns of the convent bearing the same name, is located near the main church, which was built by Codussi between 1480 and 1500. The new façade is a typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO CHIESA DEI GESUATI

Built by the Carmelites and dedicated to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade, made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.

Once there was also a marvellous vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by Austrian bombs.

To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.

This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest monument of this type preserved in the lagoon. The simple and solemn interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.

The church of the Jesuits was built between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they took the place of the Jesuits, in order to replace the small church that still stands beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author of the church’s design and of the internal decoration, assisted by two great artists of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with its single nave, side chapels and a deep presbytery, is beautifully balanced.

To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling by G.B. Tiepolo, the altarpiece by Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by Tintoretto.

The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario was founded before 1071, but nothing remains of the primitive building, due to the devastating fire that swept through the Rialto area in 1514. The current building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that used the church premises.

To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by Pordenone and the frescoes in the cupola came to light again during the restoration work.

It’s one of the six Scuole Grandi and, according to Venice history, art and culture, it’s considered one of the greatest. The building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double stairway inside, lit with large arched windows, was built by Codussi. The beautiful exterior Renaissance iconostasis, with its carved decoration, was designed by P. Lombardo.

To see: the ceiling with visions of the Apocalypse, works of great masters such as G.B. Tiepolo, Diziani, Marieschi.

fter the Chinese, Indian and Brazilian Carnival comes the Venetian one. As the saying goes, „It’s not the Carnival of Venice, the Carnival is Venice“. And which, if dedicated to Carlo Goldoni, the great playwright, could be the Carnival of Venice?

This year’s theme, chosen by the municipal administration, is therefore the most traditional among the traditional ones. Where Venice, its history, its craze and its characters are narrated through the most singular undertones.

It will be a Carnival of theater, parties, music and dances, of modern carnevalesque evolution, dedicated more than it ever was in 300 years to the lagoon’s most famous theatri-

E quale, se non quello dedicato a Carlo Goldoni, il famoso commediografo, potrebbe essere il Carnevale di Venezia?. Il tema di quest’anno scelto dall’amministrazione comunale è dunque quello più tradizionale fra i tradizionali. Dove Venezia, la sua storia, le sue manie e i suoi caratteri, sono raccontati nelle più singolari sfumature. Sarà il carnevale del teatro, delle feste, della musica e dei balli, dei segni moderni dell’evoluzione carnascialesca, ma dedicato ai trecento anni dalla nascita del più conosciuto protagonista del teatro che la laguna abbia mai rega-

lato. Oltre alle numerose feste private, il programma di quest’anno cerca di fare sintesi delle esigenze di tradizione e modernità, per raccogliere i gusti di giovani e meno giovani. Il 9 febbraio sarà la "Giornata di Venezia" nella quale la città accoglie gli ospiti provenienti dal mondo, offrendo il meglio della sua espressione artistica.

La "Festa delle Marie", rinfrescata e rivista, sarà ancora protagonista. Poi un grande concerto, del nostro migliore settecento musicale, Pantalone e Arlecchino ad intrattenere il pubblico, per finire con la Band di Venezia a chiudere una giornata tutta veneziana. Il giorno dopo, sabato 10 febbraio, per la prima volta, i bambini padroni assoluti della Piazza San Marco. La Domenica è giornata dell’Angelo, antica tradizione che vuole un personaggio conosciuto al grande pubblico “volare” dalla sommità del campanile di San Marco a Palazzo Ducale appeso a una fune. Sarà una intensa settimana di spettacoli, che si concluderà con i grandi fuochi piro-musicali in Bacino di San Marco. Dopo vent’anni tornerà poi il tradizionale ballo della Cavalchina: alla Fenice si toglieranno le poltroncine e gli ospiti danzeranno in platea come si è fatto per secoli. I bambini troveranno il loro "Bosco Incantato" in Campo San Polo, con decine di animazioni e giochi, dedicati solo ai più piccini, i giovani potranno godersi la musica in Campo Bella Vienna, con i migliori gruppi trend del momento, i nottambuli riavranno la Marittima (Santa Marta) per tirar tardi; Cannaregio sarà protagonista con le musiche di “Venezia Suona” e Castello si accenderà con il teatro, con una nuova proposta, itinerante, per la strada.

February 9 will be „Venice Day“ during which the city will welcome guests from all over the world, offering the best of its artistic expression. The "Festa delle Marie", updated and reviewed, will once again be a mainstay. Then, a concert of our most refined 18th Century music, Pantalone and Arlecchino entertaining the public, and, lastly the Band of Venezia will close an allVenetian day. The next day, Saturday February 10, for the first time, children will completely own Saint Mark’s Square. Sunday is the Day of the Angel, an ancient tradition that has a character already known to the great public “flying” from the tip of Saint Mark’s Belltower to the Ducal Palace tied to a wire. It will be an intense week of shows that will conclude with great pyromusical fireworks in Saint Mark’s basin.

After twenty years the traditional the dance of the Cavalchina makes a comeback: the seats will be moved and guests will dance in the stalls as is tradition through the centuries. Children will find an “Enchanted Forest” in Campo San Polo, with loads of entertainment and games dedicated to the little ones, while youth can enjoy some music in Campo Bella Vienna, with the trendiest bands of the moment and nightowls will have the Marittima (Santa Marta) to continue into the wee hours; Cannaregio will be the protagonist with the music of “Venezia Suona” and the Castello area will light up with theatre, newly proposed as an itinerant road-show.

L’Atelier Tiepolo, il più raffinato noleggio costumi in città che produce anche costumi per teatro, show, film, feste ed eventi in tutto il mondo, durante il carnevale è a vostra disposizione con sarte e assistenti presso l’Hotel Danieli e il Casin di Commercio nelle Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco.

La compagnia di artisti del C.C.I. che produce spettacoli per una platea internazionale attraverso un cast di cantanti, musicisti, ballerini, acrobati e attori riportando successi in Europa nel Medio Oriente e in Asia, animerà le feste del programma per la regia di Fabio Momo, già direttore per sette anni del Carnevale di Venezia.

Pantalone

He is an old rich merchant who in the past gained a fortune through business and commerce which he now manages with parsimony. He is stingy, distrustful, chatty and clumsy but in the end manages to evoke sympathy. Pantalone is one of the most ancient masks of Commedia dell'arte. There are no doubts about its origins, as, since his first appearance in the Commedia dell'arte troupes, the “primo vecchio” (first old man), called il Magnifico, he often expressed himself in the hardedged venetian dialect. His language, harsh and raunchy at times, assumes a gentle tone when he takes on more good-natured forms as he slowly becomes a “gentle grump”.

E’ un ricco ed anziano mercante che in passato ha accumulato una fortuna con i traffici ed il commercio che ora amministra con spilorceria.

Avaro, diffidente, pettegolo, pasticcione, ma alla fine riesce a suscitare simpatia. Quella di Pantalone é una fra le maschere più antiche della commedia dell'arte. Sulla sua origine non esistono dubbi, poiché, fin dalla sua prima apparizione nelle compagnie della commedia dell'arte, il "primo vecchio", chiamato il Magnifico, si esprimeva nella schietta parlata veneziana". Il suo linguaggio, a volte duro o licenzioso, si ingentilisce quando assume forma bonaria e pian piano finisce per prendere quella di "burbero benefico".

An oval velvet mask used customarily by women, very particular and highly uncomfortable as it was to be sustained by holding a button in the mouth at lip-level.

For this reason the Moretta was a mute mask. The dress accompanying the mask was very simple and poor, almost servantlike, but underneath the plebeian woman appearance hid rich and aristocratic women of Venice who, by dressing in this fashion could blend into the people for the wilder parties with the added fascination and mystery of being silent.

Maschera di ovale di velluto nero usata solitamente dalle donne. molto particolare, e scomodissima, perché doveva essere sostenuta tenendo in bocca un bottoncino all'altezza delle labbra. per questo motivo la moretta era una maschera muta. il vestito a corollario della maschera era molto semplice e povero, quasi da servetta, ma sotto l’apparenza di donna del popolo si nascondevano aristocratiche e ricche donne di venezia che vestite in quel modo potevano mimetizzarsi fra la gente nelle feste più scatenate. con il fascino e il mistero del silenzio.

Moretta

E’ la maschera tipica della Venezia del settecento. La maschera era composta dal tabarro, un ampio mantello nero a ruota, da un tricorno nero sul capo e da una maschera bianca sul volto. La bauta era la "maschera che ogni disuguaglianza agguaglia", usata sia agli uomini che dalle donne, non solo durante il Carnevale ma anche nelle feste, nei teatri, negli incontri amorosi, ogni volta che l’incognito facilitava le avventure. La bauta permetteva la massima libertà e soprattutto garantiva l’assoluto anonimato, tanto che per ogni bauta incontrata era doveroso e cortese porgerle il saluto.

Medico della peste

One of the major curses for the city of Venice was the Plague which hit the city more than once.

For this reason the Plague Doctor is not an actual mask but rather was worn for practical cases (plague epidemics; its long nose contained a sort of filter composed of salts and aromatic disinfectant herbs: rosemar y, garlic, juniper. Successively this mask took on a propitiatory and exorcistic meaning generalized towards any type of contagious disease.

Una delle piaghe maggiori per la città di Venezia è stata sicuramente la Peste che in più occasioni colpì la città. Per questo el medico dea peste non è una vera e propria maschera ma veniva indossata in casi di necessità pratica (epidemie di peste); il suo lungo naso conteneva una specie di filtro composto da sali ed erbe aromatiche disinfettanti: rosmarino, aglio, ginepro.

Successivamente questa maschera acquistò, nel rituale del carnevale veneziano, un significato scaramantico ed esorcistico nei confronti di ogni malattia contagiosa.

The semblance of the feast

It is the typical mask of 1700s Venice. The mask is composed of the cloak, a wide round black mantle, of a black tricorn on the head and of white mask on the face. The Bauta was the “mask that equaled all inequalities”, used both by men and women, not only during carnival but also for parties, theaters, amorous encounters or any time the unknown facilitated the adventure. The Bauta allowed maximum freedom and above all guaranteed absolute anonymity, so much that it was due and courteous to greet the Bauta whenever one was to encounter one.

Galani (wafer thin pastry fried in oil covered with icing sugar) and even more the “fritoe” (dialect word for a type of doughnut) part of every fancy dress party and costume ball, protagonists of the grand kermesse. Their origin goes back into the realm of Venetian history. The first recipe was found in a manuscript coming from the second half of the 14th. Century, the oldest document of Venetian gastronomy, now preserved at the Biblioteca Nazionale Canatense in Rome. A recipe from the Renaissance period, written down as a note, in amongst a miscellany of documents from the Correr fund.

In the 17th. Century there was a “Corporazione dei Fritolari” (a guild for fryers), who managed to obtain permission from the Government to “frizer” (fry) in the small squares (campi): “boccon da poareti e da siori” they would cry (in dialect – sweet morsels for rich and poor).

Recipes for these sweets are, as for most popular food, individualised and ingredients can change slightly altering taste or adding particular flavours, in the past they were often heavily spiced.

The main ingredients remain the same however, flour, eggs, sugar, currants and pine nuts.

Galani (sfoglie sottili di pasta dolce fritte in olio di semi e coperti di zucchero a velo) ed ancor più le “fritoe” sono, accanto alle feste, le maschere, i balli, i superbi protagonisti della grande kermesse. L’origine risale a tempi davvero lontani. La ricetta più antica è stata trovata in un manoscrtto della seconda metà del '300, il più vecchio documento di gastronomia veneziana, custodito presso la Biblioteca Nazionale Canatense di Roma ed una ricetta rinascimentale, che si presenta come una sorta di appunto di cucina, è contenuta in una miscellanea di documenti del fondo Correr. Le ricette per la preparazione di tali leccornie sono, come per molte delle pietanze popolari, diverse e personalizzate da varianti che modificano parzialmente il gusto con l'aggiunta di particolari aromi speziati abbondantemente usati in epoche antiche, ma gran parte degli ingredienti come la farina, le uova, lo zucchero, l’uvetta e i pinoli sono da sempre alla base di quasi tutte le elaborazioni.

È la più ampia mostra mai dedicata ai primi anni della carriera artistica di Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), l'esposizione promossa dall'Amministrazione comunale di Mogliano Veneto e realizzata in collaborazione con la Fondazione Alberto Giacometti e il Kunsthaus di Zurigo. Riunisce la più vasta raccolta di opere del primo Giacometti, oltre 70 tra sculture, dipinti, disegni e acquarelli dal 1911 (anno in cui l'artista ha dieci anni) fino al 1929, quando Giacometti è scoperto dai surrealisti. Numerosi gli inediti provenienti da collezioni private - 3 dipinti e oltre 20 tra acquarelli e disegni, tutti mai esposti prima - concorreranno, insieme ad una esclusiva documentazione fotografica, a gettare nuova luce sulla datazione di alcune opere.

An organic selection of works, a complete retrospective exhibition on the artist from Rovigo, directed by Vittorio Sgarbi and coordinated by Alessia Vedova. One hundred and fifty of the artist’s works, unseen ones as well, for an exhibition that allowed the return of a small nucleus of canvases, which even though intended for our country, were held in France. Cavaglieri’s artistic course will be documented in its entirety: from the debut in Padua together with Felice Casorati to the great season of Ca’ Pesaro and the Venetian Biennale Exhibitions which consecrated the precious refinement of his art, up to the years of his retirement to the French countryside. The event will also be a precious opportunity to revisit the history, the contradictions and the different influences of the early 1900 art, through the fascination and the mystery of Cavaglieri’s painting.

La collezione d’arte è di recente e recentissima storia e si coaugula intorno all’importante acquisto, nel 2000, della “Veduta di Castelvecchio e del ponte scaligero da monte dell’Adige”, commissionata nel 1747 al pittore veneziano Bernardo Bellotto.

An artistic legacy that spaces from the 13th century till the 1980s, fostered in the main office of the Cariverona Establishment and Domus in Verona. In exceptional conditions, all of this will be exhibited in the Civic Museum of Bassano in order to celebrate the fulfillment of the first completed work project of this great, new cultural structure in the city. The art collection is of recent history and is curdled around the important purchase in the year 2000 of the “Veduta di Castelvecchio e del ponte scaligero da monte dell’Adige”, ordered in 1747 to be done by the Venetian painter, Bernardo Bellotto.

Il percorso artistico di Cavaglieri è interamente documentato: dagli esordi padovani insieme a Felice Casorati, alla grande stagione di Ca’ Pesaro e delle Biennali veneziane che consacrarono la preziosa ricercatezza della sua arte, fino agli anni del suo ritiro nella campagna francese. L’evento sarà anche una preziosa occasione per rileggere attraverso il fascino ed il mistero della sua pittura la storia, le contraddizioni e le diverse influenze dell’arte dei primi del Novenento.

It is the most extensive exhibition ever dedicated to the artistic career of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966).

The exhibition, promoted by the municipal administration of Mogliano Veneto and organized in concert with the Alberto Giacometti Foundation and the Zurich Kunsthaus, gathers the most comprehensive collection of works of the early Giacometti. There are over 70 pieces: sculptures, paintings, drawings and watercolours from 1911 (year in which the artist was 10 years old) to 1929, when Giacometti is discovered by the surrealists. There are many previously unrevealed pieces from private collections – 3 paintings and over 20 watercolours and drawings, all displayed for the first time ever – which will participate along with an exclusive photographic documentary to shine new light on the dating of some works.
