CHOOSE YOUR MISSION SURFING: As a surf destination, Papua New Guinea is relatively new to surfing enthusiasts. You might be surprised to find that breaks here are just as challenging and exhilarating as in any other location. PNG has unlimited surfing potential from October to April during monsoon seasons and thousands of miles of coastline just waiting to be explored – not to mention breath taking scenery and pristine coast atolls. Located just south of the Equator and 100 miles to the north of Australia. PNG enjoys warm waters ad consistent waves, complemented by the rich and diverse traditional culture of people in its premier surf destinations of Vanimo, Wewak, Madang and New Ireland provinces. KITE SURFING: Great surfing isn’t all that PNG offers. The same winds that surfers enjoy also make for perfect kite surfing. Relatively undiscovered, the warm waters of PNG are uncrowded and ideal for kite enthusiasts. The reef breaks provide great action for wave rider, while the pristine blue lagoons lure flat-water fans. Visit PNG from late May through to November to take advantage of the Laurabada trade winds, providing consistent 10.25 knot winds. Kite surfers should focus their attention on the southern part of PNG. Areas around Port Moresby and Milne Bay have optimal conditions and stunning scenery. Fifteen minutes from Port Morseby, Sero beach’s large lagoon gives way to a surf break 500 yards out. Daugo Island is a 20 minute boat ride from the city and one of the best local spots to kite surf. Two hours down the cost, Hula is a large peninsula that receives the full brunt of Laurabada winds, creating the optimal environment for kite surfers.

DEFINITION OF SURF MANAGEMENT PLAN (SMP) In the eyes of the modern world, many still consider PNG to be relatively ancient by virtue of a contrasting landscape, its people and old customs. At the same time, in regard to surfing in PNG, we are surpassing current expectations and are at the cutting edge with a new world approach – namely sustainability and longevity. Working together, the SAPNG in conjunction with the surf industry, tourism operators and traditional reef custodians, have developed a unique and defining feature that crystallises a truly memorable PNG surf experience – SMP’s (Surf Management Plan). The vast majority of PNG’s land ownership is under traditional customary clans. For coastal communities, this extends to traditional and custodial rights to fringing reefs. SMP’s are essentially access agreements which enlist sustainable quota limits in exchange for fees of levies. These have a 2 fold effect of supporting the development of surf clubs and the sport itself, whilst also generating a passive income stream for the reef custodial communities. In addition the SMP initiatives provide for: • Recognition of traditional rights • Growth of community development initiatives • Fostering good community relations • Sustainable quotas to avoid surfer overcrowding • Conservation and awareness of the marine environment • Tourism, awareness benefits and participation Visionary? No! Simply seeing the future in light of the past – Awareness! For more information on surfing and kite surfing in PNG contact: Andrew C.
