Tell us about Engineered by Remy. It’s classic meets edgy fashion – body con styles for women, and crisp, fitted menswear. It has the “cool” factor because my fans can relate to me and my life – it’s good to be able to relate to someone who can bleed and cry. I also incorporate Cambodian elements by using more Khmer silk, and my menswear all carry my red and blue logo – the colours of the Cambodian flag, symbolising a person’s internal struggle and external conflict.
N It’s not often you’ll find a boy of 12 who can sew. Remy Hou could, at that tender age, sealing his own destiny in fashion WORDS MARISSA CARRUTHERS
JUDGE HOU “It was an honour to be part of the premiere of Cambodia’s Next Top Model. Cambodia’s fashion scene is growing, especially with style magazines like Sovrin, where I have a monthly column.”
o one, least of all Hou, would have imagined him blazing the Hollywood red carpet scene and flying the Cambodian fashion flag high at 33. Call it serendipity. Born in Cambodia in 1982, three years after the Khmer Rouge regime fell, Hou moved to California with his family when he was 10. After graduating, the Cambodian designer worked in Hollywood before eventually launching his label, Engineered by Remy, in 2009. Today, the brand’s hip-hop meets rock chutzpah has gone on to gain a sartorial foothold among A-listers like John Legend, Kanye West, Brian White and Justin Bieber.
DRESSING A LEGEND “I made John Legend a custom leather jacket for his birthday. I think he liked it because he told me I was doing the right thing!”
MY ROLE MODEL “Karl Lagerfeld, because we share the same style of sunglasses! He’s an amazing creative director. His shows are incredible, and location and set design are important for me.”
Describe your personal style. Comfortable, confident, powerful and original. I’m usually in a button-up or collared shirt, fitted blazer and trousers, slim ties and my prescription sunglasses. Some say my shades are too dark but I think they’re just right – I can fall asleep and no one notices, unless I start to snore. What inspires you? Failure, family, friends, passion, blind love, pain, happiness, death. I’m here today because I was given a second chance in life to do something great. I believe my talent isn’t just my ability to sew or design but to also see the world. There’s a purpose to my life and I’m reminded of it each day. How would you like to be remembered? Remy Hou – a man who had nothing but has everything.
A MAN OF STYLE… “wears a well-fitted suit with a slim tie, and is wellgroomed and manicured.”

s Winston Churchill famously quipped, “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” If public buildings are a reflection of society’s milieu, then what can one infer from the current architectural landscape in China? Over the last 20 years, the country that gave the world such monuments as the Great Wall and Forbidden City has turned into a laboratory of sorts for some of architecture’s biggest names as it develops at breakneck speed, eager to reclaim its rightful spot on the international stage. THE HIGH COST OF SOARING AMBITIONS According to esteemed British architect Sir Norman Foster, when it comes to bold decisionmaking, there is no other country quite like China. “The Chinese are extraordinary,” he remarked in an interview with The Economist. “[They] are making decisions in the spirit of the Victorians. They have the courage to try.” It is a view echoed by others such as Rem Koolhaas who, together with German architect Ole Scheeren, designed Beijing’s ambitious CCTV Building, dubbed “Big Pants” by locals for its resemblance to a giant pair of pants from a distance. “[It’s] a building that introduces
new ways of conceptualising, liberating and realising structure that did not exist in China before,” said Koolhaas, in response to criticisms of its controversial design. While the impact of Koolhaas’s contributions to Chinese architecture remains to be seen, what is more obvious is that the country’s sprawling ambitions have resulted in a freewheeling architectural landscape, with studios unveiling proposals of futuristic metropolises and surreal skyscrapers one after another, as if in competition
to see who can get the most outrageous design constructed. And you know that things have taken a turn for the bizarre when local construction firms start building carbon copies of projects in progress, as is the case with Zaha Hadid’s Wangjing SOHO, which had found itself in a race against time to finish construction before pirates complete its doppelganger in Chongqing. THE NEXT GENERATION The country’s anything-goes mentality sits uneasily with some

local industry professionals. For Lyndon Neri and Rosanna Hu of Shanghai-based firm Neri&Hu, the current landscape points to “the absence of a modern Chinese architecture and design language.” Architect Pei Zhu, whose eponymous award-winning firm has two Guggenheim Museum commissions under its belt and was the first Chinese studio to win a Design Vanguard Prize, is even more biting in his assessment. Most young Chinese architects “lack a cultural vision”, he lamented in Designboom.com. “In the last 20 years, too many architects have been focusing

on the problem of urbanisation, the physical infrastructure. They resolve the problem with a collage of ancient styles on the one hand and imitation of Western experimentalism on the other.” To be fair, many young local architects simply have not had the chance to work on large-scale projects, their only exposure to such buildings being books and magazines. That said, among these critics, there is a consensus that what local architects and designers need to do is look to their own culture and understand how it has evolved, instead of engaging in excessive navelgazing. By this, says associate professor Wallace Chang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Architecture, it means to “live naturally by yourself” instead of obsessing about how you appear to others. This perspective is shared by a small but growing group of foreign-trained local architects such as Pei, Ma Yansong, and Hua Li, who favour thoughtful introspection in their design

process over bombastic superlatives. The Yale-educated Ma, founder of MAD architects, shot to fame with his curvaceous Absolute Towers in the Canadian city of Mississauga (the first Chinese firm to win an international award), and is without a doubt China’s hottest creative export at the moment. Apart from picking up the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leader award last year, the Zaha Hadid protégé was also selected by George Lucas to design the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago. While it would not be practical to replicate ancient Chinese temples in the modern world, Ma adds, there are still things in traditional Chinese philosophy that architects and designers can apply to modern architecture, for instance, the unique relationship between the man-made world and nature. A Yale alumnus like Ma, Hua is the founder of Trace Architecture Office (TAO), a firm he set up as a response to the lack of control he had working on large-scale urban projects. In a country where bigger is often seen as better, the Gansu
native is content with small-scale projects as they give him “more time for design and a better control of the design process.” Each of his designs is a response to its environment and it is not uncommon to find him enlisting the help of local craftsmen and using local materials such as bricks, wood and bamboo. “We don’t like to copy forms or repeat ourselves,” he said. Is this the last we will see of what Chinese premier Xi Jinping has called “weird architecture” in China? Probably not, but as it enters the next stage of development and more people start questioning the purpose of architecture in the country, it is likely that the landscape will change yet again. “To me, it’s more important to understand architecture’s social commitment and meaning,” said Hua, in an interview with Archrecord.com. “I think it has the power to transform culture.” SilkAir flies to Changsha, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Kunming and Shenzhen. As children are still growing and developing, it’s important to keep in mind how much training is appropriate for the child. The running distance depends on age and fitness level, but keeping it short is a safe bet; from there you can build on endurance, says Jurgen Zack, Senior Triathlon Coach at Thanyapura resort. For kids under six, one kilometre runs or less are ideal; seven- to10-year-olds can manage up to three kilometres; and children from 11 are ready to tackle five kilometres. A good gauge is if the kids are having fun and looking forward to the next session – that usually means the intensity and volume of training are just right. Last but not least, weather is a big consideration for safe running at any age. “Run during cooler hours, and always make sure the kids avoid too much sun exposure and overheating. Always have drink bottles ready for them,” says Zack. On your marks!

“…When I was young and had no sense in far-off Mandalay, I lost my heart to a Burmese girl as lovely as the day. Her skin was gold, her hair was jet, her teeth were ivory…”. The natural attractiveness of the Burmese so captivated novelist George Orwell. Indeed, their smooth, unblemished skin is like a beauty mark. It’s as eye-catching as the very substance believed to be the elixir for that golden lustre. Yellow circles, lines, squares, swathes, swipes and stripes of it mark the foreheads, cheeks, and noses of the Burmese, who apply it as part of their daily ritual. When matured, the bark is ground on a grindstone, or kyauk pyin (stone slab), and water and talcum powder are added to create a paste, which is then applied to the skin, where it dries quickly. When used as a cosmetic, thanaka is an expression of personality, seen in the various artistic patterns and shapes that decorate the faces of the Burmese, who have been relying on it for more than 2,000 years. Thanaka is also highly regarded for its other skin-enhancing qualities, such as its ability to stem oiliness and tighten pores, while infusing the skin with a subtle, pleasant scent.
As a medicine, it’s said to treat everything from fungus to skin sores, measles, poisoning, fever, even epilepsy. Choosing thanaka is a meticulous process largely based on personal preference for the fragrance and age of the bark. It’s
not uncommon to see Burmese women spend 15 minutes or more inspecting the bundles of thanaka logs, checking for quality, and smelling the nuanced fragrance of each wood. As grades go, white thanaka has a stronger, sweeter fragrance than yellow thanaka. Older woods also have a thicker layer of bark, and sometimes lines are drawn on younger woods by unscrupulous vendors to feign an extra layer. ALTERING THE FACE OF TRADITION Out in the countryside, men and women apply thanaka liberally on their entire face, arms and legs like a protective mask prior to working in the sun to prevent sunburn and sun damage. Likewise for those working outdoors in urban areas. However, the entry of Western cosmetics in Myanmar SILKAIR.COM | 37

threatens the continued use of this ancient beauty remedy. More young women are wearing makeup and they feel thanaka doesn’t pair well with lipstick, eyeshadow and fashion trends. Some even eschew it as they associate it with villagers. Still, it hasn’t stopped the local industry from reinventing thanaka to appeal to a younger generation and tourists looking for a unique souvenir. And it appears to be catching on. Among young women who do wear it, many are now favouring a jar or sachet of ready-made thanaka paste over the traditional, more liquid mix, despite concerns that it may contain harmful chemicals. They are also adapting contemporary ways to wear it, applying thanaka with a lighter hand or just a dusting, like loose powder, instead of slathering it on thick, so that it blends better with their colourful makeup. Interestingly, thanaka’s skinenlivening reputation has caught the attention of the modern skincare industry. “Youthful, fair and radiant skin begins with Tanaka” – that’s the enticing promise from Asian skincare brand Bio-essence, which created its popular Tanaka White Series by harnessing modern bioengineering techniques to extract thanaka’s natural goodness. While its evolution is inevitable, one fact is irrefutable: thanaka is intrinsically Burmese, and remains as much rooted in their cultural identity as the ubiquitous longyi. WHERE’S BOLIN? WORDS JOYCE Y.T. ONG
Now you see him, now you don’t. If art is a commentary on a society’s mores, Chinese artist Liu Bolin has plenty to say by simply blending in. In 2005, Liu began a silent protest against the lack of protection for artists by the government with the photographic art series ‘Hiding in the City’, after authorities razed Suo Jia Cun, a thriving artists’ village in Beijing where he had a studio.
Liu’s creative process starts with selecting the background, often ordinary scenes that are intrinsic to everyday life in China – supermarket shelves, a billboard at a bus stop or a bulldozer in a construction site. Thereafter, says Liu, “I think about my position, where I should face, how far I should stand from the camera. Then I’d discuss colours and painting techniques with my assistants. After that, my task is just to stand very still against the backdrop.”
Today, Liu’s works have taken on a new dimension, exploring the loss of identity and people’s feelings of disconnect with modern society, while showcasing his distinctive “synthesised art form” that combines sculpture, performing art and photography. Each image depicts Liu’s physical form cleverly painted to blend into the background, making him disappear into the scene and earning him the nickname “The Invisible Man”.
While he intends to continue to explore Chinese social and cultural issues through his ‘Hiding in the City’ series, he’s also keen to cast attention on social issues such as poverty, war and racial tensions further afield in the Middle East, Africa and South America. “Everyone has their own perspective of art. I’m just trying to fulfil the art world in my mind,” says the 42-year-old, who kicks off a series of solo exhibitions this year, starting in Paris this month.

A former Dutch colony and a key commercial centre in Indonesia, Makassar offers clear waters, beautiful beaches and some fine diving that can rival the best in Bali. Paotere Harbour in northern Makassar is a hive of activity. Goods are brought in from around Indonesia by a variety of vessels, including traditional Buginese sailing boats called phinisi. Stop at the nearby market stalls to tuck into grilled seafood fresh off the ships, but you should also make time for Rumah Makan Nelayan, a local favourite for seafood – get the grilled fish with spicy sauce. For a green escape, take a two-and-a-half hour car ride along hilly roads to Malino Tea Plantation. Lush landscapes and crisp mountain air greet you upon arrival, soothing your senses. Keen on island adventures? A short boat ride away are the Kayangan or Lae-Lae islands. Or drive six hours to Tanjung Bira Beach at the southernmost tip of the South Sulawesi peninsula, a perfect spot for diving, swimming and snorkelling. For pure isolation, Selayar (above) has swathes of pristine beaches and few visitors. It’s also the gateway to the Taka Bonerate National Park. Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts can explore the marine park’s some 500 sqkm of stunning coral reefs, nearly half of which form the world’s third largest coral atoll.
