Welcome to our town! We, the people of Bratislava, LOVE it! It is the Slovak capital, so it has all the important institutions, but it is still small enough not to make travelling around the town unbearable. It is a town very rich in history, however it doesn’t shy away from modern architecture or new trends either. Bratislava has a very dynamic nightlife, its streets, cafes and restaurants are the perfect meeting place and if you need to get away from city life, there are a number of forest parks or green getaways to take refuge in. Oh, and on top of that, we, the Bratislava-ers, are very friendly. There are so many reasons why we LOVE this town. Hope you’ll LOVE Bratislava just as much. Willkomen in unserer Stadt! Wir, die Bewohner Bratislavas, lieben sie! Sie ist die Hauptstadt der Slowakei mit allen wichtigen Institutionen, doch sie ist trotzdem klein genug um das Reisen innerhalb der Stadt zu ermöglichen. Diese Stadt, reich an Geschichte, schreckt auch vor moderner Architektur und neuen Trends nicht zurück. The river flowing directly through the city adds to the unique and yet Central European atmosphere of Bratislava. The newly built walkway on the bank of the Danube is the perfect place to end a hard day of work or sightseeing. Bratislava – the city of friendly people. Slovakia has the biggest supply of drinking water per inhabitant in the world, that is why there is no need to use non-drinking water in the country. Time-limited tickets are valid for 15 min., 60 min., or 90 minutes /night lines/ tickets. Children under 6 travel for free. 24-hour, 48-hour, 3-day and 7-day tourist tickets are also available. Passengers must buy a ticket prior to boarding public transport and must punch the ticket in the nearest punching machine as soon as they board. A new ticket does not need to be punched when changing, provided the time has not elapsed. Facts about Slovakia / Fakten über die Slowakei Slovakia became a sovereign state 18 years ago. However the history of the Slovak nation is much older than that. The first Slavs settled here already in 5th century AD. After being a part of the AustroHungarian empire, directly after WW I. Slovakia formed together with the Czech Republic one common state known as Czechoslovakia that lasted from 1918 until 1993 (except for the years of the World War II). After the end of World War II Czechoslovakia fell under control of the Communis regime controlled by the USSR. The year 1989 was the year of great change for Slovaks and from then on Slovakia made huge steps towards stable democracy. A great part of the country is covered with woods and forests, unique and colourful flora. Basic info about Slovakia Grundinformationen über die Slowakei Slovak People / Das slowakische Volk Majority of the inhabitants of Slovakia are ethnically Slovak (85.8 %). A significant portion of the population, about one tenth, is of the Hungarian ethnic. This population is mainly concentrated on the border with Hungary, especially in the south-west. Other minorities, such as the Czechs, Romanies, Ruthenians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles and Jews comprise 5 % of the total population. Slovakia is predominantly a Roman Catholic state, with more than 80 percent of its inhabitants claiming adherence to this religion, although real church attendance is much lower. Die Mehrheit der Bewohner gehört dem slowakischen Ethnikon an (85,8 %). Ein bedeutender Teil der Bevöl kerung, etwa 10 %, ist ungarisch. Diese Bevölkerungs gruppe ist vor allem im südwestlichen Gebiet an der Grenze zu Ungarn konzentriert. Andere Minderheiten wie Tschechen, Deutsche, Ukrainer, Polen und Juden bilden ca. 5 % der Gesamtpopulation. Unique history and attractions are just a walking distance, in the compact city center and getting to know it will be a great experience. You surely cannot miss the dominant of the town Bratislava Castle 01 overlooking the Danube river and resembling an upturn table. The castle went through several reconstructions. After a big fire in 1811 it remained as a ruin for 150 years and after the World War II. it obtained the current look. The castle offers great view on the neigboring Hungary and Austria. An unconventional view can be experienced from the 7th floor of the Michael’s Gate 03 , the only preserved entrance gate to the town, currently a seat of the Museum of weapons. You can get to know more of the history of the town and feudal justice in the eldest museum of the town – the Museum of Bratislava in the building of the Old Town Hall 06 . The Old Town Hall is a complex of several buildings and the eldest one dates back to 13th century. The pride and treasure of Bratislava is the largest preserved collection of english gobelin tapestries in the world made by flamish weavers in the manufacture of Mortlake near London. Six gobelins tell a story of love between the princess Hera and young man Leander and are placed in the Primatial Palace 08 . Do you know that there is 178 of them? It is good to walk around Bratislava looking at the floor. The crowns represent the original route walked by the monarchs. The route begins at the St. Martin’s Cathedral 05 , where 19 kings were coronated in 1563-1830 and the historic times are reminded by gold-coated replica of coronating crown placed on the tower of the cathedral in the height of 85 m and weighing incredible 300 kg. The ceremony ends on the bank of the Danube river, on the coronation hill (current Square of L.Stur), where the king promised to protect the country against enemies.

Rubberneck has already lost his head twice due to careless drivers, that is why city councillors decided to help him by erecting a road sign behind the statue. Bratislava has the Narrowest house 17 in Central Europe. You will find it on the Michalská street, attached to the Michalská tower, house number 15. The front façade of the house is 130 cm wide. Where once stood a street for guards is now a kebab fast food restaurant. If you are in Michalská street and tower area don’t forget to look out for the narrowest house, as it is so narrow, it might not even catch your eye. Today, it is a meeting place for people of all ages at various cafés, confectioners, and restaurants, just as it was a century ago. Through the route of the Korzo runs a coloured laser ray which shines beautifully especially in dark winter nights and brings an interesting modern touch to the historical centre. Schöne Náci (Sedlárska street) 16 was a real part of the Bratislava local colour. This statue commemorates the eccentric dandy who dressed in a top hat and tails and lived at the beginning of the 20th century. He was often seen strolling around Bratislava korzo, handing flowers to ladies passing by and sometimes even humming a pre war musical hit. Taunter (Panská street 29) 19 is a strange figure. There are various explanations for this statue of a stooping man on the façade of a house. One of them says it is intended to ridicule the curious owner of this adjacent house who used to “spy” on passers-by on the street through a small oriel window. It stands at a strategic site above the Danube. The site was inhabited as far back as Celtic and Great Moravian times. The castle underwent largescale reconstruction during the Gothic and Renaissance period and during the reign of Maria Theresia. Currently, the castle houses expositions of the Slovak National Museum and some of its premises are used by the Slovak parliament. After its reconstruction, the historical museum is now opened to the public. Bratislava Burg 01 . There are three chapels adjacent to the monastery – the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist which contains the tomb of the family of the magistrate Jakub in the crypt, the Loretánska chapel and the Chapel of St. Rozália. Diets of the Hungarian magnates were held at the monastery in 16th and 17th century. In 1526, Ferdinand I Habsburg was elected as Hungarian king here. Primatial Palace 08 , Primaciálne square 1. It is a former archbishop’s winter palace which dates to the end of the 18th century and is the most beautiful classicistic palace in the city. The palace’s Hall of Mirrors has seen many significant events - the Treaty of Pressburg between France and Austria was signed here in 1805 after the Battle of Austerlitz. The palace houses a unique series of six English tapestries from the 17th century, which depict the tragic love of Hero and Leander. Primatialpalais 08 , Primaciálne platz 1. Das Erzbi schof-Winterpalais aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ist der schönste klassizistische Palast der Stadt. St. Michael’s Gate 03 , Michalská street. There were originally four gates to the medieval city. Only one of them has survived to the present day – St. Michael’s Gate. The original Gothic gate has been reconstructed a number of times. During the baroque reconstruction, a copper statue of St. Michael was added to the top of the 51 m tower. The tower houses the medieval weapons and city fortifications collection of the Municipal Museum. Michaelertor 03 , Michalská straße. In die mittelalterliche Stadt gelangte man durch 4 Tore, bis heute ist nur ein Tor erhalten geblieben – das Michaelertor. Das ursprünglich gotische Tor wurde mehrmals umgebaut, in der Barockzeit befand sich auf der Spitze des 51 m hohen Turms eine Kupferplastik des Hl. Michaels. Im Turm können Sie die Sammlung des Stadtmuseums von mittelalterlichen Waﬀen und Festungsanlagen der Stadt betrachten.

Grassalkovich Palace / Grassalkovich-Palais Grassalkovich Palace 09 , Hodžovo square. This was the summer residence of Count Grassalkovič, built in the 18th century and was the centre of social life at that time. It was even graced by a visit from Maria Theresia. In the 19th century the palace was reconstructed for the Archduke Friedrich. In the 1950s, the palace was used by the pioneer’s organization. The palace was extensively reconstructed and became the official residence of the President of the Slovak Republic in 1996. Grassalkovich-Palais 09 , Hodžovo platz. St. Elizabeth’s Church / Kirche der Hl. Elisabeth St. Elizabeth’s Church 10 , Bezručova street. St. Elizabeth’s Church, known as the Blue Church, dates to the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterized by the blue colour of the stucco on the walls and is a unique example of Art Nouveau sacred architecture. The mosaic on the façade depicts the Miracle of St. Elizabeth and her relics. The remainders of other saints are kept behind the main altar. Kirche der Hl. Elisabeth 10 , Bezručova straße. Devín and Devínska Kobyla – Sandberg. The Devín Castle is a national cultural monument and one of the most significant archaeological sites in Slovakia. Over centuries the castle witnessed Celts and Romans, and during the period of the Great Moravian Empire it was the most important castle on the border. Only Napoleon’s armies managed to destroy it. Hiking enthusiasts can continue to the Devínska Kobyla hill – a massif forming the western part of the Devín Carpathian Mountains west of Bratislava, where rich thermophilic vegetation and rare insects can be observed from nature trails. On the sandstone hill of Sandberg you can still find fossils 14 to 16 million years old. Characteristic for the vegetation of Devínska Kobyla is its individuality and abundance – the fauna that thrives here originally did not grow

Die Burg Devín /Theben/ ist ein Nationales Kulturdenkmal und gehört zu einem der bedeutendsten archäologischen Fundorten in der Slowakei. Über Jahrhunderte erlebte die Burg die Kelten, wie auch die Römer und in der Zeit des Großmährischen Reiches war sie die bedeutendste Burg am Grenzgebiet. Erst die Truppen Napoleons schaﬀten es diese Burg zu zerstören. Wanderfreunde können noch bis zur Devínska Kobyla wandern, einem Massiv, das west lich von Devín in den Kleinen Karpaten liegt. Hier kann man thermophile Vegetation und seltene Insektenarten von den Wanderwegen aus beobachten. Auf dem Sand berg ﬁndet man 14 bis 16 Millionen Jahre alte Fossilien. Charakteristisch für die Vegetation der Devínska Kobyla ist die Individualität und Üppigkeit der Fauna, die unsprünglich nirgendwo sonst auf dem slowakischen Staatsgebiet zu finden war.

Church and convent of the Order of St. Claire / Klarissenkirche und - kloster Church and convent of the Order of St. Claire 04 , Klariská street. The nuns of the Order of St. Claire came to Bratislava in 1297 and with the generous support of the King they had a church and convent built on the site of a previously destroyed Cistercian monastery. At the turn of the 15th century, a Gothic tower with extensive sculptural decoration, from which 4 stone statues have survived to the present day, was added to the southwest corner. Today, the church serves as a concert hall. Klarissenkirche und - kloster 04 . Die Klarissinnen kamen 1297 nach Bratislava und errichteten mit reichlicher Unterstützung des Königs an der Stelle des zerstörten Zisterzianerklosters eine Kirche und ein Kloster. An der Wende zum 15. Jahrhundert bauten sie an der südwestlichen Ecke einen gotischen Turm mit St. Martin‘s Cathedral / St. Martinsdom St. Martin‘s Cathedral 05 , Rudnayovo square. A 15th century Gothic church in which 11 Hungarian kings and 8 consorts were crowned between 1563 – 1830. Inside the cathedral is a replica of the Hungarian crown, which weighs an unbelievable 300 kg, on top of the 85 m tower and beneath the cathedral, there are crypts where church dignitaries and city functionaries are buried. Old Town Hall 06 , Main square. In the 14th century, a house with a tower which was built for the magistrate Jakub stood on this site. The Old Town Hall took shape in the 15th century, joining a number of burgher houses and over the centuries has undergone several reconstructions. The Old Town Hall houses the oldest museum in Slovakia – the Municipal Museum, which was established in 1868. An eclectic building built over the period 1913 – 1919 on the site of a former state granary. It is used to hold various social events and concerts and is also home to the Slovak Philharmonic. A collection of treasures from the distant past of Slovakia and various archaeological ﬁndings from the early Stone age up to the 13th century. All the exhibits are originals produced from gold, silver, alabaster and gemstones. The most valuable exhibit is the Moravian Venus carved from a mammoth tusk, which is estimated to be almost 25,000 years old. The one extant tower from the medieval fortifi cations of Bratislava houses a collection of weapons and other exhibits which present the tradition of Bratislava foundry men and gunsmiths. A collection of clocks from the 17th – 20th century, which are mainly the work of Bratislava clockmakers. Ein guter Platz zum Übernachten Choosing a „good place for the night“, which is comfortable, safe and not too far off from all the tourist attractions is not an easy task. If you decide to look for accommodation in Bratislava before your trip, make sure to check out the proximity of the hotel or hostel to the centre of the town, which you will most probably want to visit. If you don’t want to worry about transportation and want most of your sightseeing in Bratislava to be within walking distance, book a place in the centre of the town. It might be a little more costly, but will pay off in being transportation-problem free. If you decide to go for accommodation outside of the centre, in one of the residential areas of Bratislava, make sure to check out which trams, trolleybuses or buses go to your neighbourhood and if there are also night-buses going this direction. In case you don’t make the public transportation, you can always get a taxi. There are many taxi services operating in Bratislava and most of their prices are very reasonable. If you come to Bratislava without any prior arrangements made, visit one of the Bratislava Tourist

The best thing about „parenica”, apart from its taste, is the way it is eaten. It is actually one long, fairly wide strip of cheese wrapped into a bun, so to eat it, you are actually unwrapping the bun and get thin slices of great cheese. Wenn Sie einen Slowaken nach einem typisch slowakischen Gericht fragen wird er Ihnen mit Sicherheit „bryndzové halušky“ (Brimsennockerln) empfehlen. Das Gericht mag beim Anblick ein leichtes Schmunzeln hervorrufen, sowie auch der Name an sich. „Halušky“ sind Kartoffelnockerln, die zusammen mit einem speziellen Schafskäse „bryndza“ (Brimsen) serviert werden. Brimsennockerln werden üblicherweise mit gebratenem Speck und einem Glas fermentierter Milch „kefír“ gegessen. Sie schmecken etwas spezifisch, also geben Sie nicht gleich nach dem ersten Löffel auf.

In der slowakischen Küche steht wortwörtlich der Käse im Mittelpunkt, mit all seinen Arten und Größen. Eine der traditionellen Käsesorten ist „oštiepok“, ein salziger Käse aus Schafsmilch, der in ovale Käselaibe geformt ist. Um „oštiepok“ richtig zu essen, schneiden Sie ihn in kleine Stücke und belegen Sie damit ihre Scheibe Brot zum Frühstück, essen Sie ihn mit Brot und Gemüse als Vorspeise oder genießen Sie ihn zu einem Glas Wein. „Oštiepok“ hat seinen eigenen besonderen Geschmack und braucht nicht zusätzlich gewürzt werden. Im Geschäft können Sie sich zwischen der Naturvariante oder geräuchertem „oštiepok“ entscheiden. Das Beste an „parenica“, außer seinem Geschmack, ist die Art und Weise wie dieser Käse gegessen wird. Es ist eigentlich eine lange, gewundene Rolle, die Sie beim Essen Stück für Stück auswickeln.

Slovak food tastes great! It’s all about cheese, meat, potatoes and excellent seasoning. Some Slovak specialties might look a little strange at first glance, but don’t let that scare you off. After all, the best way to get to know a country is through its food. Die slowakische Küche ist ein Genuss! Die wichtigsten Zutaten sind Käse, Fleisch, Kartoffeln und hervorragende Würzmittel. So manche Spezialitäten mögen auf den ersten Blick etwas seltsam aussehen, doch lassen Sie sich nicht von vornherein abschrecken. Eine gute Möglichkeit ein fremdes Land zu erkunden kann nämlich auch durch den Magen gehen! Slovak Cheeses / Slowakischer Käse If you ask any local what the most typical Slovak food is, they will recommend you „bryndzové halušky”. The dish might look just as funny as it sounds, however its specific taste is definitely worth a try. „Halušky“ are small potato dumplings served with a special sheep‘s cheese - bryndza. “Bryndzove halušky are usually served with fried bacon on top and with a cup of fermented milk called „kefir”. Their taste is „specific”, so don’t give up on them after the first spoon.

Slovakia is literally all about cheese, in all its forms and sizes. „Oštiepok” is one of the most traditional cheeses. It is a salty cheese made from sheep milk and usually comes in quite larges chunks. The proper way to eat „oštiepok” is to cut small slices of it and either put it on a slice of bread and eat it for breakfast, have it with bread and vegetables as an appetizer or munch on it over a glass of wine. „Oštiepok” has its own particular taste and doesn’t need any additional seasoning. In stores you can usually choose between natural „oštiepok” and its smoked version.

SPECIALTIES OF THE MAIN DISH Spezialitäten als Hauptspeise In Slovakia soups are very popular, as they are nourishing and dense. Typically, in almost every restaurant you can find chicken soup with noodles, cabbage soup prepared from sour cabbage or various types of pulse soups such as lentils or beans. If you like creamy soups, then you have to taste the garlic one, which in some restaurants is served in a very traditional manner – the soup is poured into a small loaf of bread. Traditional meats of our cuisine are pork and poultry. Lamb, duck or goose are a treat especially during feasts in autumn, when you will find them in every restaurant, all across the country. A specialty you should definitely taste is a potato pancake „lokša”, which is not sweet and goes very well with all the autumn feast meats. This is a unique local specialty that you will not find outside Central Europe.

Suppen haben in der slowakischen Küche eine besondere Stellung, da sie sehr nahrhaft und sättigend sind. In fast jedem Restaurant wird Hühnersuppe mit Nudeln, Krautsuppe oder verschiedene Arten von Suppen aus Hülsenfrüchten wie Linsen oder Bohnen angeboten. Falls Sie Cremesuppen bevorzugen, müssen Sie unbedingt die Knoblauchsuppe ausprobieren. In manchen Restaurants wird diese im traditionellen Stil serviert – die Suppe wird in einen kleinen ausgehöhlten Brotlaib gefüllt, aus dem man direkt essen kann. Die traditionellen Fleischarten sind Schweine- und Geflügelfleisch. Lamm, Ente und Gans sind eine Gaumen - freude, vor allem während der Gänsefeste im Herbst werden sie in fast jedem Restaurant im ganzen Land angeboten. Eine Spezialität, die Sie unbedingt kosten sollten ist „lokša“, eine Art Palatschinke aus Kartoffeln. Sie schmeckt aber nicht süß und ist vor allem mit dem Fleisch an den Gänsefesten ein Genuss. „Lokša“ ist eine einzigartige Spezialität, die außerhalb Mitteleuropas nicht vorzufinden ist.

The exhibition presents unique collections of beehives from the 17th century, consisting of relief and figural beehives, beekeeping tools from various periods of the Slovak apiculture. As a part of the exhibition, you will see a display of apiculture literature and goods made from bee products. On the grounds of the museum you will also have a chance to visit a small farm with animals – goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits and poultry. There is nothing better than taking an active break. It relaxes you but at the same time allows you to discover new things. The region around the capital Bratislava has many such activities on offer. Rent a bike and ride on one of the many picturesque cycle paths. If you rather stay on solid ground, take a hike along the Morava river.
