PROMOTING THE VALUES OF GOODNESS, GIVING & VOLUNTEERING
is Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, affirmed that the huge turnout for registration for the courses and workshops in the fields of theatrical arts, music, creative writing of poetry, stories or novels and visual arts, launched as part of the national program “Cultural Summer” organized by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development across its centers, reflects the utmost trust of parents and students in the ministry’s programs and initiatives. initiatives, aims is to invest and develop the talents and abilities of students to introduce to the UAE society real talents worthy of raising the the name of the UAE in various fields locally and internationally.
The huge turnout for registration for the courses and workshops reflects the utmost trust of parents and students in the ministry’s programs and initiatives.
PROMOTING VALUES OF KNOWLEDGE AND CULTURE Sheikh Nahyan further explained that the discovery of talents and its care, in addition to community’s cultural development falls within the strategic goals of the ministry and is one of its main messages of promoting the values of knowledge and culture within the UAE society. “The national program “cultural summer”, with its specialized workshops , creators, authors, theatrical and musical artists, does not only aim to occupy students spare time in the summer holiday, it rather aims is to identify creative, artistic and literary hobbies of students aged between 7 to 17 and invest them in a scientific way. Thus, help such students turn their hobbies into real creative works and pave the way for them to invest and development their talents.”, noted Sheikh Nahyan who further stressed that creativity begins to show in such young ages which explains the keenness of the ministry to attract a large number of experts and innovators to help students develop their potential in an organized way over the course of six weeks.
BUILDING A KNOWLEDGE BASED SOCIETY His Excellency explained that the program can be categorized as one large workshop through which the most creative and talented students in the four fields set by the ministry, are qualified to be part of a year-long program which will enable them to develop their skills, and eventually introduce a real innovator and an addition to the developed cultural, artistic and knowledge scene of the UAE. Sheikh Nahyan called on parents to follow up with the organizers of the program to identify the development of their children in the various phases of the program, which will continue until the 10nth of August. “Our goal is to transform the cultural and knowledge centers of the Ministry across the country into hubs playing an important role in building a knowledge based society in the literal sense of the word.
NURTURING YOUNG TALENTS
“We, in the United Arab Emirates, are proud of the wise vision of the leaders of this beloved country and their interest in the status of culture and knowledge and their role in nurturing young talents and supporting their creative abilities. I highly appreciate the sincere efforts and support of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and their brothers Rulers of the UAE, to achieve successful cultural and knowledge development throughout the country.” On the other hand, all the cultural centers of the Ministry in Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Dibba Al Fujairah, Masafi, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Dhafra, organized an open day to welcome students participating in the program, which is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development under the patronage of HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. 2017 أغسطس

INTERVIEW
I love joy and laughter even under the worst conditions.
Let’s begin with tourism first, tell us about your relationship with travel? For me, travel is a source of pleasure, an experience that teaches independence, adventure and learning about different cultures, it is a lifestyle rather than luxury.
They say travel is like exploring a book ... What do you say? Traveling is a method of learning and revival of spirit and mind, as it enables us to rediscover our ability to adapt to the different conditions of life, coexist with different customs and traditions and accept others, as well as it establishes communication among the nations.
What are the cities that impressed you the most? I read a lot about Paris and I loved it, but when I visited it, I loved it even more, because it has the scent of the East due to the presence of many Arabs there. It is the city of art and literature. I wish to visit it over again soon, as it is one of the cities that has left its trace in memory. I spent a long time in it, learnt the language and memorized its streets. I went there for treatment
Paris formed my career and was a turning point in my life. after I had an accident and lived there about 7 months, and no one can ever forget its wonderful and spellbinding nature, and I love the countryside life where nature and calm exist, away from the city’s offensive noise, frenetic lifestyle and crowdedness.
to learn, work and get to know the meaning of coexistence among the different nationalities, the preservation of rights and freedoms ... I very much love Dubai: The City of love and peace.
What is the thing that sticks in your memory in any country that you visit?
I dream of visiting Cuba, and I have not yet visited it, because I am afraid to go and not to come back; as I am greatly fond of the Latin culture, music and the arts, the simple life they live and dancing on the streets. It is a place full of joy and passion for life.
In any country I visit, I am fascinated by popular places. When I return from any journey, I remember the simple, popular alleys and modest people. I like those places by nature, because they always teach us new things, as they are the source of customs and traditions for the different nations ... I also love the countryside and its tranquility, the beauty of its landscapes, purity of its nature, and the friendly hearts of its people.
You do live in the UAE, specifically Dubai, why have you chosen this country to live in? Frankly speaking, I have not chosen it; but rather, it was the one that chose me. It is the place where I was born, studied and graduated from the American University in Dubai, and, by nature, I like to be always near my family and friends... Dubai has prepared me
12
ISSUE 29
AUGUST 2017
Which country do you dream of visiting?
I love the very rich Cuban music such as Cha-Cha, Mambo and Rumba, the popular music that makes me dance when I hear it ... I am also a lover of Havana, the city of radiant culture, which is characterized by its splendid architectural buildings that resemble the cities of Europe.
Each city has its own story, and your story with Dubai has granted you the prospects for success and fame. Tell us about this aspect?
Of course, Dubai has gifted me with fame, success and stardom that I never dreamed of before.
If you were to take a tourist tour in the UAE ... where would you go?
Dubai has prepared me to learn, work and get to know the meaning of coexistence,
Each Emirate has its own flavor... For me, I’d like to go to the Northern Emirates like Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, in order to get away from the noisy and crowded cities, and escape to nature and simplicity.
Let’s move on to your media experience... Tell us about the beginnings... achievements? I graduated in 2011, and then the office of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid immediately called me to work at Dubai TV, where I worked first as an assistant and a researcher for a limited salary. By then, I did not know anything, but I started to learn everything. One day, we were covering the Dubai Film Festival, and by that time I was behind the scenes. On that day, I appeared on several shots on the camera during my reception of guests. One week later, I got a call from a TV producer who asked me to do the “pilot” of a TV program as a presenter, and immediately he chose me to introduce a UAE tourism program titled “Al Maw’ed - The Appointment”. We worked on it for three seasons, the program focused on Emirati tourism. Through the program, I learnt about the most beautiful tourist destinations in the UAE, and then I proceeded forward in that domain.
To what extent has your family had an impact on your media life? I have been passionate since childhood, and I have received the greatest support from my family, my mother and everyone around me; my relatives and friends. They are proud of the achievement I have made in my career.
Away from tourism ... we see you in the recent period through the “ET Bel Arabi – ET in Arabic” Show, how did you find the experience after your work as a news anchor? News means a lot to me, as I’m constantly following up on current news and events,
but my move to “ET Bel Arabi” was a decision between me and the management. Although I was the youngest news anchor at the TV station, I decided to take this step because I do not see myself in 10 years on a political talk show. I’m full of fun and I am not into serious stuff.
Which program do you wish to present?
I have been passionate since childhood, and received the greatest support from my family
I hope to present a social program that presents values and novel ideas, tells stories of success and ambition, and serves as a platform for people we do not see in our ordinary lives. We, in the Arab World, are fans of drama by our own nature. I think we need hope, success stories and talents. That’s why talent and singing programs are very popular. The world is in need for laughter, joy and positivity.
How do you evaluate your experience at “ET Bel Arabi”? I think I cannot judge this experience now; I have not yet proven myself in the program, since I have just finished treatment after the bad accident I had, and then I immediately joined the program, as the team has already started the program, and I joined them at the end. I think the comeback of the new season will be my real start, and there are many surprises. 2017 أغسطس

mirati artists and Media Celebrities have diverse interests and priorities regarding their tourist destinations, especially in the summer. Some prefer historical sights, others natural landscapes, and a few prefer exploring uncharted territories.
Among Arab countries, Egypt is their favorite, as they are emotionally connected to its historical attractions and even the local neighborhoods. Next comes Lebanon where all locales embrace each other in one spot. They pointed out that although Arab countries are almost equal in their tourist potential, each one has its unique flavor. As for Europe, they prefer serene natural landscapes, especially in Paris and London. However, some of them are keen on exploring Asian destinations such as China and Japan to find out about their traditions and habits, usually reading and researching the journey before setting sail. EGYPT & SYRIA ARE THE PLACES WHERE THE HEART IS The actor, Habib Ghuloom, despite his many work-related travels, sets aside some time for relaxation, even for short periods. It is a time to recharge his batteries, run into old friends and collegues across the world (which often happens). However, he is not interested in exploration, he has travelled so much that he knows the world like the back of his hand. Now he only seeks antique cafes where the aroma of the past lingers around him and his friends. He said that Syria was his favorite in the Arab region before the conflict as it is brimming with significant attractions such as Al-Zabadani, Damascus, and Mount Qasioun where he used to visit cafes and enjoy the lush scenery. He is adamant that tourism in Syria was unparalleled across the world. Egypt is special for Ghuloom, he lived there for five years, longs to return, and is still in contact with Egyptian actors who used to be his colleagues and have become superstars. Wherever he goes, especially Egypt, he doesn’t miss a chance to call his old pals and set up a reunion. He said that he visited all of Egypt’s attractions, whether in Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan, or other world-renowned destinations. His favorite attractions, however are the Pyramids, the Nile Corniche, and Old Cairo with its ancient mosques, citadels, and cafes.

As for Europe, Ghuloom adores the English countryside, as he studied for his PhD in Manchester. He is always attracted to natural landscapes and lush open places, which are absent in Gulf countries. He notes that Europe shines with its virgin nature and governments there exert efforts to protect it.
EGYPT & THE EUROPEAN COUNTRYSIDE TV Presenter Asmahan Al Naqbi said that she loves exploring novel and interesting places. She is always on the lookout for something new, preferring places that are unfamiliar for Gulf and Arab tourists, and avoiding the popular destinations visited by the overwhelming majority. Generally, she is fond of the European countryside, where nature is charmingly innocent. It is the ultimate destination for relaxation away from the crowdedness of traditional tourist attractions. As for Arab countries, Al Naqbi heads without question to Egypt, the cradle of civilization. After all, she is half-Egyptian. That’s why she doesn’t consider Egypt merely a tourist destination, it is her second home where she recollects her sweetest memories and visits her family and friends.

PARIS, MIAMI, AND LAS VEGAS Emirati Singer Hessah says that each Arab country has a special taste that draws tourists, whether through nature, attractions, customs and habits, or culture.
Nevertheless, she favors Egypt for its many tourist cities and sites such as Sharm El Sheikh, Harghada, Luxor, Aswan, and the amazing Cairo and Ancient places that testifies to its rich history and culture. Regarding Europe, Hessah prefers Paris, Miami, and Las Vegas. The longest trip she had was to London, which lasted more than 2 months,
and she visited many European cities. Moreover, she likes Asian countries like Thailand with its gorgeos islands and kind people, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.
SIMILAR ATMOSPHERE IN ARAB COUNTRIES The Emirati actress, Reem Hamdan, follows a unique policy to decide her destinations; she starts by researching the place’s tourist and historical attractions by reading and finding out about its climate, culture, top landmarks, traditions, cuisine, language, population and so on. She sees that Arab countries are quite similar with mild variations that distinguish them from one another. Yet Egypt is her top priority, right before Lebanon & Morocco. Hamdan adds that she is infatuated with Egypt, especially the aromatic Egyptian cuisine, the Pyramids, and even the local population. Normal walks for her are like a journey through history, even old cars are there!

SCENIC COUNTRIES Artist Samar Al Shamsi says that most of her trips are work related, but she sets aside some time for relaxation. There must be at least two days to roam the country and visit its top landmarks and landscapes. She is attracted, in the first place, to scenic countries, luxurious hotels, and restaurants where she is introduced to traditional meals as a part of the local culture. As for Arab countries, Lebanon is her favorite, simply because it embraces diverse locales; you could be hiking a mountain and suddenly meet the sea, a green space, or an upscale urban area with tremendous residences, not to mention how amazing the Lebanese are: well cultured, civilized, and hospitable. She adds that she likes traveling to Egypt and getting to know the Ancient Egyptian Civilization about which she wrote extensively. Furthermore, it is one of many Arab countries with rich history, including Jordan and Morocco among others. As for Europe, Al Shamsi is passionate about Italy where she studied art and architecture for a full year at a turning point of her life. That is why she grew so emotional about it. She also likes Geneva with its heart-warming serenity.
EGYPTIAN LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOODS TV Presenter Saeed Al Mamry says that he used to love Beirut for its diversity in weather, locales, and natural scenes, but recently political conflits made him go there only occasionally.
He is passionate about Egypt, its crowds and its simplicity. For him, Egypt is all about its people and their local neighborhoods. That’s where he heads whenever he sets his foot in Egypt, not in fancy hotels, but amidst that history-old people, and he loves the food in places like El-Hussein and El-Sayyeda Zeinab. In short, he visits Egypt for Egypt, to enjoy the delightful company of its people. As for Europe, he holds a special spot in his heart for Paris because it has a unique style that sets it apart from other European cities, it is rich in history and culture, and only Arabs have visited it recently. London is special for him as well, and for all Gulf citizens. You rarely find someone from the Gulf who has not been there dozens of times because of its otherworldly beauty. He recently discovered some charming spots around Munich, mostly villages like Cocoon and Garmisch, as well as Salzburg, Austria. What draws him there is their green landscape, in certain seasons you feel like the horizon has turned into a sea of trees and roses, truly an exceptional experience. As for Asia, Al Mamry is not a huge fan of Asian destinations, but currently he would like to visit China to see the Great Wall, and Japan to find out the secret of its people’s efficiency, discipline, and lifestyle. 2017 أغسطس

Executive sous chef Shammi de Costa said: “Italian food is always a favorite and considered a guilty pleasure for most. The Mamma Mia dinner was launched to show how our kitchen is respectful of the simplicity in Italian cooking styles. We now focus on the use of the freshest ingredients and incorporate local produce where possible.”
The Mamma Mia dinner features different stations for stone oven-baked pizzas, homemade pastas, appetizers and desserts. The buffet also features a selection of artisan breads, which goes well with the fregula soup with clams.
The grills station offers a selection of seafood dishes like grilled squid and Sicilian tiger prawns, while the live station puts on a show for every homemade pasta that they cook in front of the guests – sometimes on a Parmesan wheel.
In the cold foods section, guests can find light starters like sea bream salsa verde, beef bacon wrapped radicchio, and chicken liver crostini.
“We have introduced the ricotta cheese cake, stuffed peaches and panettone to give Afyä’s diners the real taste of Italy,” Shammi said.
The wide selection of mains take center stage at the lavish dinner featuring delicacies like eggplant Parmigiano, gnocchi, prawns wrapped in crispy pasta and beef lasagna. The braised leg of lamb, choice of Italian sausages and the 1-metre pizza are popular choices of Afyä diners that remain on the Mamma Mia menu. “A signature dish that we insist that our guests must try is the 48-hour braised beef cheek prepared in the butcher style. Another favorite on the menu is the Devil Chicken known for its spiciness,” Shammi said.
To finish the meal in a true Italian way, the Afyä kitchen leaves its guests spoilt for choice. From a variety of gelatos to traditional favorites like tiramisu, pannacotta and cannoli, they have got it all. South Pacific’s Secret Paradise
A NET
of 15 islands in the heart of the South Pacific spread over an area the size of India with a population no bigger than a small New Zealand country town, 15,000 souls. These unique and friendly Polynesians have their own language and government and enjoy a vigorous and diverse culture with significant differences between each island. Despite some 100,000 visitors a year to the capital island – Rarotonga – the Cooks are largely unspoiled by tourism. They offer a rare opportunity for people from the cities of the world to experience a different type of vacation. There are no high-rise hotels and very little hype. Ideal for travelers seeking more than the usual clichés associated with the South Seas, each island has its unique qualities and offers the visitor a special experience. Here you find our editors’ picks of the breathtaking Cook Islands. 2017 أغسطس

Rarotonga Rarotonga is the largest of the Cook Islands and the capital, Avarua is the main commercial and administrative center. Locals just call it “town”. It’s also the most commercialized of the 15 islands, but it still retains a Polynesian charm. The main street looks out across the Pacific Ocean and from June to August you can stand on the sea wall and watch whales as they migrate to warmer waters to breed. You won’’t find any fast food chains like McDonalds or any of the ubiquitous supermarket or store chains. Instead there are palm lined roads and friendly locals.
Aitutaki Photographs can never convey the breathtaking beauty that is Aitutaki. Warm, crystal clear waters fill a triangular shaped, turquoise blue lagoon.... so blue you’d think someone had painted it that color! Each leg of the triangle stretches more than 11 km (7 miles). Dotted around it are uninhabited, palm filled islands or “motus” with sparkling white sand...reminiscent of the sort of a picture a child would paint of a desert
Coral-stuffed lagoons, turquoise waters defying believability, abundant marine life and jungles island. Aitutaki is the second most visited of the Cook Islands, and particularly popular with honeymooners. Tourism facilities are well developed, but the total number of visitors a year remains a small fraction of those staying on the capital island, so Aitutaki still feels very unspoiled.
Atiu Atui is the third largest and third most visited of the Cook Islands;

that does not mean it’s busy though... typically there are around 50 visitors a week. The island is about half the size of Rarotonga. Legend says Tangaroa, the divine god of the sea, was the first inhabitant. Surrounding the plateau is a ring of taro water gardens and then the jungle-clad makatea (fossil coral reef). Notched into the cliffs of makatea are over 28 beaches which, albeit small, are untouched and almost unvisited.
Mauke Mauke is half the size of Rarotonga in circumference (18 km, 11.25 miles), but it’s a world away in landscape and lifestyle. Its central volcanic plateau is
surrounded by ring of jagged, razor-sharp fossilized coral or makatea which reaches up to 1,000 meters inland. But the volcanic origins mean the soil is rich and this is justifiably called the garden of the islands.

Manihiki According to many, Manihiki is the most beautiful of the Cook Islands. 40 tiny islets encircle a lagoon four kilometers (2.5 miles) wide. And this completely enclosed body of water is the source of the island’s greatest asset...black pearls.

Big Ben Nothing says “London” more emphatically than the 97-meter tower housing the giant clock and its resounding bell known as Big Ben. It’s as iconic a landmark as Tower Bridge. The tolling of Big Ben is known throughout the world as the time signal of BBC radio. Below it, stretching along the Thames, are the Houses of Parliament, seat of Britain’s government for many centuries and once the site of the royal Westminster Palace occupied by William the Conqueror.
Tower Bridge Spanning the divide between the traditional City of London and the more relaxed, creative Bankside, London Bridge is full of interesting attractions and surprises. Of all the bridges over the River Thames, London Bridge has the longest history. It was the only bridge over London's river until Putney Bridge opened in 1729. The famous Tower Bridge, a little further down the Thames, is often mistakenly called "London Bridge". However, London Bridge does offer unparalleled views of its pretty counterpart. The bustling area around London Bridge is full of hotels, bars, restaurants and attractions. The area is also well known for the medical services at London Bridge Hospital and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

The London Eye Built to mark London's millennium celebrations in 2000, the London Eye is Europe's largest observation wheel. Its individual glass capsules offer the most spectacular views of the city as you embark on a circular tour rising 443 ft above the Thames. The journey lasts 30-minutes, often quicker than the time spent queuing for your turn. If you can, reserve your time in advance. The best option is to skip the line completely with a London Eye: Skip-the-Line Ticket. This advance ticket allows you to take a flight at any time on the day you plan to visit.
Westminster Abbey Another location with a long association with British royalty, Westminster Abbey stands on a site that's been associated with Christianity since the early 7th century. Officially known as the Collegiate Church of St Peter in Westminster, Westminster Abbey was founded by Edward the Confessor in 1065 as his place of interment. From his burial in 1066 until that of George II almost 700 years later, most sovereigns were not only crowned here but they were buried here too. More recently, it's become famous as the preferred location for Royal Weddings.

Hyde Park Covering 350 acres, Hyde Park is London’s largest open space and has been a destination for sightseers since 1635. One of the park’s highlights is the Serpentine, an 18th century man-made lake popular for boating and swimming. Hyde Park is also where you’ll find Speakers’ Corner, a traditional forum for free speech (and heckling). Another Hyde Park landmark is Apsley House, former home of the first Duke of Wellington and purchased after his famous victory at Waterloo. Now a museum, it houses Wellington’s magnificent collections of paintings, including Velázquez’s Waterseller of Seville, along with gifts presented by grateful European kings and emperors. England’s greatest hero is also commemorated at the Wellington Arch.
St Paul's Cathedral The largest and most famous of London's many churches - and undoubtedly one of the most spectacular cathedral's in the world - St Paul's Cathedral sits atop the site of a Roman temple. The previous church structure was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, and Sir Christopher Wren designed the re-build. Today, the twin Baroque towers and magnificent 365 ft dome of St Paul's are a masterpiece of English architecture. If you're up to it, be sure to walk the stairs with their spectacular views of the dome's interior, including the Whispering Gallery.
Kew Gardens Kew Gardens - officially called the Royal Botanic Gardens - is situated in southwest London on the south bank of the Thames and is a wonderful place to spend time as you enjoy the numerous plants grown amidst its 300-acres. Laid out in 1759, the gardens became government property in 1841. In 1897 Queen Victoria added Queen’s Cottage and the adjoining woodland. A variety of tours are available free with admission, and many musical and cultural events are held here throughout the year.

Buckingham Palace One of Britain's most iconic buildings, Buckingham Palace is also the scene of London's most popular display of pomp and circumstance, the Changing of the Guard. Drawing crowds at 11:30am in every season, this colorful and free display of precision marching and music also takes place at St James's Palace where you can follow the band along The Mall as they march between sites.
The British Museum Displaying one of the world’s finest collections of antiquities, the British Museum contains more than 13 million artifacts from the ancient world. With priceless objects from Assyria, Babylonia, China, Europe, and elsewhere, it’s hard to know where to begin. But most tourists head first for the museum’s most famous exhibits: the controversial Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon, the Rosetta Stone, the colossal bust of Rameses II, the Egyptian mummies, and the spectacular hoard of 4th-century Roman silver known as the Mildenhall Treasure.
Hampton Court Palace Another great Thames-side attraction, Hampton Court is one of Europe’s most famous palaces. Its Great Hall dates from Henry VIII’s time (two of his six wives supposedly haunt the palace), and it’s where Elizabeth I learned
of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Other interesting features include the Clock Court with its fascinating astronomical clock dating from 1540, the State Apartments with their Haunted Gallery, the Chapel, the King’s Apartments and the Tudor tennis court.
Piccadilly Circus & Trafalgar Square Two of London’s best-known tourist spots, these famous squares lie not far apart and mark the gateways to Soho, London’s lively theater and entertainment district. Trafalgar Square was built to commemorate Lord Horatio Nelson’s victory over the French and Spanish at Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson’s Column, a 56-meter granite monument, overlooks the square’s fountains and bronze reliefs, which were cast from French cannons. Admiralty Arch, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the National Gallery surround the square.

13 LIWA DATE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES TH
THE SYMBOL OF EMIRATI PAST AUTHENTICITY
H
eld under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, the Liwa Date Festival is an annual event that was launched to assist the exchange of technical expertise among farmers. This year’s festival continued from 19th to 29th July.Â
The Liwa oasis that stands like a haven of life and greenery on the edge of the Empty Quarter, is the venue of the festival that aims to promote the cultivation of the best and finest varieties of dates. The Festival also seeks to raise the quality of Emirati dates so as to achieve a better level of excellence and competition, locally and internationally, while preserving the healthy natural characteristic.
A CELEBRATION OF THE DESERT FRUIT The 34,000-square-metre festival space is a free-flowing area from the traditional market at one end to the entertainment and award ceremony stage at the other. In between, several private and government companies operating in the fields of dates, agriculture, heritage and environment are exhibiting their products, handicrafts, services and artistry. At the heart of it all, is the Best Dates competition arena where, over the next 10 days, some 6,000 baskets of dates are expected to be judged for their taste, size, look, color and, of course, health.

It all started with Etheg and Dabbas, the first two date categories to compete. Behind closed doors, local farmers were bringing basket after basket of Dabbas dates and trolley after trolley of freshly cut massive branches of dates, known as Etheg in Arabic. The top 15 Etheg winners were revealed at 8pm on the first day of the festival. All 30 branches of dates submitted to the Etheg competition were weighed and the farmer who brought the heaviest of them took home the desired title. A 106.5-kilogram Etheg of Shahal variety was crowned the winner.
As in previous years, the UAE’s most popular varieties of dates will be part of the Best Dates competitions, including Khallas, Farth, Kunaizi, Bou Maan and Shishi. Also as in previous years, the dates’ submissions took place in one evening, while the judging and awarding took place the following day. Most of the 233 prizes sharing a total of Dh5.2 million are for the Best Dates categories of the competition, awarding up to 15 of the best entries in each category. Date palm farming is still a lucrative business, particularly since date palm owners receive full support from the local government. Apart from the festival’s prize awards, farmers received support from the Abu Dhabi Farmers Services Centre, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, and Al Foah Company, which bought all the dates from farmers, not just from the winners, but all the farmers who wished to sell.
TRADITIONAL MARKET One of the key highlights of the Liwa Date Festival is the Traditional Market. It sheds light on Emirati heritage and reinforces the cultural legacy the Emirati ancestors bequeathed to their sons and daughters.
The visitor of Liwa and its festival finds in the market a model of the flourishing oasis decorated with meticulously-woven palm leaves. There, he has a chance to discover all products made of date palm, in addition to date sweets, and Jumar (the milkywhite inner part of the tree heart). The visitor can also have a close look at every aspect that is related to the daily life of the Bedouin family and the different crafts, such as Al Sadu (a traditional form of weaving). The visitor of the Traditional Market had grasped Emirati women’s vital role in the deep-rooted Bedouin economy. From their mothers and grand-mothers, women inherit the efficient techniques needed to use these riches and preserve them for post-harvest times. The market showed its visitors the solidarity between the members of Bedouin families and let them notice the constant subsistence of tribal unity. The Traditional Market is a continuous local festival in itself. It is, indeed, a perfect platform to share expertise and reproduce entrenched heritage for the benefit of future generations.
The Liwa Date Festival has gained considerable attention and recognition on account of its increasing role in tourism and economy, and its role in linking the local date and palm tree handicrafts to tourism and economy. 2017 أغسطس
