SOAP BOX Unacceptable Losses

To expand on Katharine Biele’s thoughts on Utah’s water shortages (Hits and Misses, Sept. 23) In August, The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Park City was taking action because it was losing 30% of its drinking water before it could reach consumers. This should have sounded alarm bells. Over 50 years ago, before computers and digital meters, a loss of 15% was regarded as an upper limit for a “well-run” utility. Standards should be much tighter these days.

In July 2013, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that “Average water loss in systems is 16%—up to 75% of that is recoverable.” So, aiming at losses not exceeding 4% may be a tough target, but is almost certainly economically justified. However, in August 2013, the Utah State Water Plan concluded

that “Most Utah municipal water systems do not accurately account for water use and most do not have an active leak detection program.” Note that this depressing conclusion was reached before the impacts of the current drought and the serious effects of climate change were fully appreciated.

Unless water losses have miraculously healed themselves in the intervening years—why was this not the focus of the governor’s prayers?—the state should call on all water utilities to implement plans to get losses to acceptable levels as soon as possible. And before everyone screams that this cannot be afforded, reducing losses from 30% to 15% makes more water available for sale to customers, enough to cover a decade of growth. What’s not to like?

“Time’s Up” Sept. 16 Cover Story

Thanks to Jim Catano for an honest, open, reasonable “discussion” on climate change in City Weekly. I basically agree. And many, perhaps most, youth agree—that’s why they’re facing an epidemic of despair and hopelessness.

Our current fragmented “civilization” is simply unable to deal with a planetary, global, developing catastrophe. The United Nations is weak and political. The so-called “great powers” are each arrogant, ignorant and politically dysfunctional.

Where’s Edward Abbey and his monkeywrenchers when we really need them? A little diligent sabotage might go a long way. So might the rapid, effective removal of certain specific industrial, business and political “leaders.”

The planet will get through this. But humankind, as we’ve come to know it, likely will not.

I have just started a brand new national political party: D.A.S., which means Dumb As S--t.

Basically our motto is: If smart people are for it, we are against it. We don’t believe in COVID shots or any type of masking. One of our founding members got one of the first shots and immediately started talking in a Chinese language. Another one of our founders, after getting the second shot, was overheard saying something nice about a Democrat.

n Friday, I returned home after the annual City Weekly Greece Tour 2021. Thirty-six travelers joined along for up to 17 days of bliss. Given the obvious, we didn’t travel in 2020.

My, how things have changed. For starters, the new Salt Lake City International Airport is every bit the monster everyone says it is. I’ve been through plenty of airports, so it’s not really fair to think ours is better or worse than any other—that metric always falls upon the person who either has the good fortune to be at a forward gate verses a person with the misfortune of running out of breath on the way to the most distant gate. All airports are defined by that measure, not if it has ready access to a soft-shelled taco.

On that score, on our departure date, we arrived more than two hours before takeoff as we were heading out internationally. That proved to be more than ample time to present a passport, proof of vaccination, the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) needed to enter Greece and, finally, go through security to our gate. In Europe, you don’t have to take off your shoes. Why do we have to take off our shoes?

Our new airport is, indeed, spit shiny, but why don’t the people-movers exit at restrooms? Yes, I’m old, but this is serious. What’s the point of people-moving someone past a restroom, or not all the way to one? How about restroom exits from the people-mover? Is that so difficult? This is a major design flaw in the Salt Lake City airport that I hope Provo or Ogden learn from when they build their own super airport facilities. I’d drive to either if I knew I’d have easy access to a urinal.

Worse, though, is what one faces upon return. Last Friday, we left our hotel at 6:30 a.m. (9:30 p.m. Thursday in Utah) for the Chania Airport. Our flight to Athens lasted around 30 minutes. From there, we presented proof of a negative COVID test that all persons returning to the U.S. must provide, and we left for JFK. We cleared customs there and caught our flight home to Salt Lake City, landing at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, a full 24 hours after leaving Crete. After power walking to the baggage area, our bags finally started piling into the bins around 10:15 p.m., in other words, taking longer for those bags to go from our aircraft to inside the airport, than it did for us to travel from Crete to Athens.

I know, I know, the airport is soooooo pretty, I shouldn’t complain. Well, yes, I can. En route to the baggage area is the new Passenger Greeting area, a feature likely unique to our airport. It’s ostensibly a place for families to gather prior to screaming, shouting and rushing to greet their long-absent LDS missionary son or daughter. I’m glad there’s such an area, it’s a nice touch.

Trouble was, the greeters didn’t use it. They stood outside the greeting area, which was bone dry of persons. Oh well, old habits, I guess. And by the time I got to the empty greeting area I was thinking, “Geez, maybe they should’ve put a urinal there instead.” There’s plenty of room, and it would be a world-class airport urinal.

But that’s the half of it. At the baggage area there are no places to sit. Maybe there isn’t at other airports either, but I’m here to tell you that after 24 hours of travel, standing on swollen ankles for another 30 minutes is no way to be made to feel welcome. Hey, I’m not looking for a bed or anything, but it also got crowded as additional passengers piled into the spaces. Those floors are tough on the feet, prompting people to get even more grouchy.

Maybe our fair city can pop for some violinists or singers to help brace the return. I could have used some flute, some Debussy, or Jethro Tull, even. A couple of benches would be nice, even hard ones. So would a portable cocktail bar, but that’s likely asking for too much. And, of course, a urinal. Why not?

Here’s a Salt Lake City airport traveler tip, though. Have you experienced the nightmare of picking up an airport traveler at night? It’s crowded once you leave the baggage area and exit to the arrivals area to await your pickup.

Somebody’s gonna die there. Our group had just spent 17 days in Greece, many of those in the madhouse traffic of Athens. The mayhem of the arrival area at the new airport is worse by far. So, instead of departing the airport at Arrivals, just go to the Departures area one floor above and hitch a ride there. We did that, and so did other shifty characters such as us. It was the only bright moment of arriving back in Salt Lake—gaming the system.

I could have used this space to write all about the great times we had, the wonderful adventures with new friends, the beaches and the food. But there’s no room here. Meanwhile, none of us could have gone if not for our willingness to take a lifesaving vaccine (derisively called the “jab” by idiots who do their own “research”) and to wear a mask on an airplane (“Masks don’t work,” say the idiots). Doing both allowed us to enjoy real freedom, the kind we all had before too many of us drifted off into selfish assholery.

Maybe next year, the trip can go forth without needing those. But if it does, and you’re not vaxxed, you’re not coming. And, like this year, we won’t miss you. You can piss off, so to speak. CW Send comments to john@cityweekly.net

MISS: Talk Is Cheap

Gov. Spencer Cox, sounding a lot like he was at a priesthood meeting, made a valiant effort to reconnect with the disaffected Outdoor Retailer folks.

“Bring ’em home” was the message as a new round of negotiations starts.

Outdoor Retailer and its annual trade show left Utah in a huff in 2017 after the state began its quixotic effort to “take back federal lands” and oppose the Bears Ears National Monument.

The Deseret News ran Cox’s heartfelt video plea in a story touting the state’s “changes,” like a nice big airport and 700-room convention center hotel.

And of course, Utah sees an opening because Denver is mile-high in costs as well as elevation. “We’re working with key stakeholders and the Department of the Interior to establish sustainable ways to manage Bears Ears National Monument and other cherished public lands,” Cox said in the video. Sure we are. And we’re going to sue the Biden administration over mask mandates, rev up nuclear waste and, oh yeah, build a polluting inland port near the airport.

Speaking of nuclear issues, there’s a new PR campaign in Utah to make it all better. A Salt Lake Tribune report asks the question of whether the uranium industry means a “green” energy future or a radioactive threat. Have you heard that before? The difference in the pitch now is China, its resources and its super competitiveness. The accursed Chinese have become the latest boogeymen in the global hierarchy, and they have a lock on the rare earth industry, which is key to everything from phones to automobile computers. The U.S. and Utah want some of that and are looking to revive the White Mesa Mill in San Juan County to begin production. But who are you going to believe—the glad-handers who say everything is safe? Or the environmentalists and Native Americans who recall high rates of cancer and contaminated groundwater?

HIT: The Heat Is On

Kids. They have to be the hope for the future because adults have simply messed things up. The world’s youth and those in Utah took to the streets for Climate Week 2021, and we can only wonder whether policymakers and politicians noticed—or cared. There are predictions that by 2500, the earth will be uninhabitable. Climate change is exacerbating the border crisis as immigrants flee drought and floods. No one wants to live on the coast anymore, and climate events are consistently the worst ever seen. Students in Utah have been protesting the state of the world since 2019 when activist Greta Thunberg started Fridays for Future. In a Deseret News story, lawmakers agreed that climate change is real, but they’re just not sure if it’s “really” important to address now. They do seem to want a free-market approach, but that could take time the world doesn’t have.

Your fall planting headquarters

Murals can play a unique artistic role; often created for public places, they can serve as a flashpoint for feelings about key social and political moments, like the George Floyd mural at 800 South 300 West in Salt Lake City. At times of change and upheaval, a large-scale work of art has the ability to capture such feelings on a grand canvas, expressing not just frustration and anguish over what has taken place, but hopes for where we might go from here.

In the wake of a year unlike any other, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts reached out to the Roots Art Kollective—Miguel Galaz, Luis Novoa and Alan Ochoa (pictured)—to imagine a museum-based exhibition of mural art inspired by the events and experiences of that year. The result is 2020: From here on out, an exhibition that invited local muralists to take on that theme and bring it to the walls of UMFA, representing the massive societal shift caused by COVID, social-justice movements and a divisive election year. SB Dance Curbside Theater @ Daybreak Back in the summer of 2020, when SB Dance founder and artistic director Stephen Brown was first conceiving the idea for Curbside Theater, it was an innovative way to deal with a time when there was no way of knowing how soon performing arts could get back to conventional indoor theater spaces. “I needed something pretty manageable and small,” Brown told City Weekly at the time. “It had to be something I could build and figure out myself—get some plywood, some 2x4’s, start nailing stuff together. ... You have to figure out the whole thing: Can it be generated off of a battery, can people see and hear, then you have social distancing.”

The resulting project—which brought short dance pieces directly to people’s homes and other neighborhood areas—was so wildly successful that even as many other companies return to indoor performances, SB Dance has kept Curbside Theater rolling along for a second season. Expanding from 5-8 minute household performances to 30-40 minute “block parties,” the performances

now welcome more people than ever, and have already played this summer in locations ranging from Holladay City Park to Boulder.

As Repertory Dance Theatre returns to the Rose Wagner Center for its new season, it also returns to a choreographer with whom the company has had a nearly-50-year artistic relationship. North Star features three works by celebrated choreographer Lar Lubovitch: 1976’s “Marimba,” 1978’s “North Star” and 2018’s “Something About Night.”

According to artistic director Linda C. Smith, the title North Star has a particular relevance because “the north star is this guiding light. … I had this idea of coming home to the theater, and the arts can guide us back to a place we need to find again.” As for “Something About Night,” Smith notes that Lubovitch suggested the more contemplative piece because “the current society is so … noisy, in terms of everything that’s going on. He said, ‘I’m seeking a quieting of the mind in my work right now.’”

As the dancers work with Lubovitch himself on this choreography, Smith acknowledges a specific artistic challenge in

staging repertory works. “Re-creating a dance is like a musician playing a work that has been written in the past,” she says. “There’s going to be a unique interpretation. Lar wants to see his choreography interpreted as he imagined it, but he’s sensitive to the fact that new dancers will bring new things to the movement he’s created.”

With seed money from the state, the AAU was formed to support those refugees in their new home, but it also helped give rise to an organization with a mission to educate the residents of Utah about the many different cultures that we tend to group under the umbrella of “Asian,” and the rich traditions that characterize each one of those cultures.

Part of that mission over the years has been fulfilled by staging the annual Utah Asian Festival, which like many 2020 events moved to a virtual format for health and safety reasons. The live-and-in-person Utah Asian Festival returns this year with all of the offerings and activities that have made it such a popular destination over the years. Individual Asian culture groups will offer presentations throughout the event that showcase arts and crafts, while booths present

Antagonistic Allies

Elaine Jarvik’s new play explores progressive movements with differing priorities.

n a Super Tuesday in 2020, Elaine Jarvik is talking about the challenge of progressive movements often butting up against one another over differing priorities. She just happens to be talking not about those of the moment, but issues that were causing friction more than 100 years ago.

Jarvik’s world-premiere play Four Women Talking About the Man Under the Sheet— produced by Salt Lake Acting Co.—in part deals in with the historical connection between women’s suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. But Douglass himself is not a character. Events begin on the day after his death on Feb. 20, 1895, as Anthony (Colleen Baum) visits his widow, Helen (Susanna Florence), at their home.

“They had this problematic relationship,” Jarvik says of Anthony and Douglass.

“A few weeks before, the annual convention of the National Women’s Suffrage Association was in the south, in Atlanta. Douglass was going to come and be part of it. But Susan asked him not to show up, because she was trying to convince all of these Southern people to support suffrage, and to have a black man show up would upset them. ...

What I wondered was, was there some guilt involved in her showing up [at the Doug-

lass home]?”

At first, this fraught interaction wasn’t going to be the subject of Jarvik’s play.

Instead, it was going to explore the connection between Utah suffragists and the national women’s suffrage movement. “I began reading a lot of books, because it’s easier to read a book than start writing,” she says with a laugh. “Once I started writing, it was this grand sweep of history, more than 50 years—and it just wasn’t working. I had coffee with my playwriting guru, Tim Slover, and he said, ‘When you write about this big span of history, it’s like skimming a stone across a lake. It’s pretty, but you don’t get the big splash.’ So I just decided to abandon it.”

While the change of direction that ultimately became Four Women Talking About the Man Under the Sheet narrowed that scope of history, it still dealt with historical figure—some of them revered. Jarvik felt the pressure and the responsibility of portraying these people in the play—partly the result of a set design by Justin Ivie that placed a large photo of Susan B. Anthony in the center of the action.

“She was looking down on me during rehearsals all the time,” Jarvik says. “I loved having her presence there, but I was also thinking, ‘Was I doing this right?’ There’s a huge plot point about how you honor people from history, whether you ignore their flaws or embrace their flaws. I was nervous.

So I just went with a little comedy. I guess I can just have fun with this, and I want the audience to have fun.”

While the play’s inciting incident focuses on Anthony’s relationship with Frederick Douglass, the text also addresses Anthony’s interaction with fellow suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who becomes a character in Four Women that is not physically present, but serves in a sense as Anthony’s conscience. “[Stanton] has kind of been written out of the history of women’s suffrage, because she was such a radical,” Jarvik says. “She was a delightful person, really smart ... but she wanted to be this radical in the room. This was just one more thing that Anthony had to fight against— not just anti-suffragist men and women, but even her ally.”

Susanna Florence, Yolanda Stange and Colleen Baum in Four Women Talking About the Man Under the Sheet The notion of people who should theoretically be fellow fighters for progressive causes instead becoming antagonists certainly has a ring of familiarity in 2021, according to co-director Jason Bowcutt.

“It has been an interesting process to rehearse this play while our political systems fight it out in real life,” he says. “‘Art imitating life’ has felt familiar throughout.”

Four Women tackles the complexity of intersectional progressivism head-on, including the character of Douglass’s daughter Rosetta (Yolanda Stange), who approaches the idea of women’s rights from the distinctive perspective of a woman of color. “She says she’s a different kind of suffragist,” Jarvik says, “saying to Susan, ‘You don’t know what it is to fight for certain kinds of things.’ ... In the 19th century, the women’s suffragist movement was mostly white, middle-class women. You saw this, I think, with the Women’s March [in 2017]; when it started out, white women

took it over. Black women were seeing their interests not being addressed.”

Jarvik hints at a twist that brings the idea of the present day more directly, but it doesn’t take a leap of logic to understand how such conflicts play out throughout history. Susan B. Anthony might be a historical hero who was driven toward a particular goal, in a way that perhaps made it hard to see the goals of others. “Like maybe a lot of activists,” Jarvik says, “you want this one thing.” CW

A field guide to experiencing Salt Lake City on foot.

Throughout 2020, Bryant Heath ran every mile of public street in Salt Lake City. Heath recently shared the observations and highlights from his project with City Weekly during a wide-ranging interview, which has been edited for length and clarity and presented in Heath’s own words.

sacs and then there’s eight houses there, a little community, which is kind of neat.

I’m curious how it feels to live there. How could you not be a tight-knit community when you’re literally the only eight houses on the end of a cul-de-sac that’s between large commercial buildings? And if you’re just driving by, there’s no way you would ever know it’s there.

I love the area of Highland Park, which runs along the south side of Interstate 80. The houses themselves aren’t so ostentatious as what you might see in Harvard/Yale, although the neighborhood looks similar. There are oldgrowth trees lining the streets and it seems more downto-earth, plus it’s very close to Sugar House Park.

People sometimes think Interstate 80 is the city’s boundary line. It’s not—the city goes all the way down to Brick yard and 3300 South. So, it’s an often-overlooked city neighborhood, but it’s beautiful. If I were looking to move, that would be one of the top places where I’d love to live.

Before the project, the only experience I had with Westpointe, in the northwest corner of the city, was when I’d be going to the airport. I’d always presumed it wasn’t even part of Salt Lake City—I thought it was maybe part of North Salt Lake.

It’s a heavily residential area. Unless you live there or, possibly, have kids going to school there, odds are you probably don’t spend much time there. It’s a very nice neighborhood. There are newer homes and newer development. And there’s a lot of small parks and greenspaces.

Out of curiosity, I looked up housing prices on Zillow.

By Salt Lake standards, the housing prices are reasonable. So it’s a nice neighborhood that’s at least on the lower end when it comes to pricing.

When you go through The Avenues on foot, in the foothills northeast of downtown, you really see the unique-

ness from block to block and house to house. It’s seldom you’ll find the same bungalow copy-and-pasted. I always think about when the homes were first built and the original owners and the designs they had in mind. I’m no architectural expert, but I have a superficial knowledge about a lot of topics—building architecture being one of them. I might not be able to tell you if a house is a Victorian or a Tudor, but I can appreciate the diversity that is around.

And then you’ll have pockets of commercial business that you stumble upon. There’s a Smith’s grocery store and the businesses around it that most people know, but also little pockets of retail integrated within the community, which is pretty unique.

Central City, east of Downtown, was interesting to explore because you always think of Salt Lake’s streets being on the grid. But between the neighborhood’s large thoroughfares, you have dead-end side streets, courts and small avenues. You can fall into one of these cul-de-

It was December 2019, and I was on Google Maps trying to figure out where I wanted to eat. I started zooming in and out of different regions and thinking how I’d been here and not been there, or maybe I’d driven down that main street but none of its side streets.

I started thinking holistically about the city and how I hadn’t been to three-quarters of Salt Lake, even though I’ve lived here for 10 years. So that was a bit of an eye-opening experience. I thought, I like to run and this would be a good activity, like a New Year’s resolution.

My first run was on Jan. 2 around Sugar House Park, and I continued on from there. Other than a few weeks off on three occasions—figuring out my family’s pandemic schedule in March, nursing a knee injury in the summer and celebrating the birth of my second daughter in October—I was out there running different Salt Lake City streets every week for the entirety of 2020. After 118 runs and about 1,000 miles, I finished on a run near the airport on Dec. 13, 2020.

People always bring up the interstates. It’s illegal to run on freeways, so I’m sorry, I couldn’t run on Interstate 80’s shoulder—I wouldn’t want to anyway. The only other two restrictions I had were any sort of gated community with aggressive no-trespassing signs and any kind of active construction.

But with those two caveats, I am extremely confident that I covered everything.

When you’re in a car, you’re mostly concerned with getting from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible. Even riding a bike is a little bit like that—you’re still doing those mental calculations, and you’re not necessarily noticing the environment unless you’re on a leisure ride.

But with running, you’re kind of forced to do that because you’re going so slow. Even on major streets, you’re looking around.

You start thinking about these connections and noticing all this stuff that normally would just be on the periphery.

I am by no means a city planner, but you can’t help but make observations. Going into this project, I was aware of things like Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s 1,000 Trees initiative and the deficiency of trees on the west side.

But if you go up on the east bench and look out across the valley, everything appears kind of uniform from this perspective. I wasn’t aware of the discrepancy until I actually ran the streets.

There is a section in Poplar Grove off of Redwood Road that goes into a residential area. I measured and found it was four-tenths of a mile without a tree on the curb strip. You think about a neighborhood like Harvard/Yale where you can’t go 40 feet without a tree on the curb strip. Those discrepancies become apparent when you’re taking the time and moving at a slow pace.

With the west side’s ultra-wide streets, I can’t help but think of things like 1200 East, where the city just went through and added a landscaped median.

You couldn’t have a six-lane-wide road in the east-side residential neighborhoods, so the west side seems ripe for redeisgns like green space in the middle of the street.

Fairpark is home to one of three floating stop signs (1000 West and 500 North) that I remember from running the city. That’s just evidence for how crazy some of these intersections are. Drivers can’t see the stop sign at the curb because it’s so far away.

Salt Lake City has a few phantom roads like Boulevard Gardens Street.

It’s not an actual vehicle road, but it’s labeled like one. It’s a giant green space off of West Temple (approximately 1800 South) and the entire block is basically conjoined front and back yards. There are several of these scattered around the valley and they were interesting discoveries. I posted a picture of the street, and one of the residents said it’s the best place to raise children—they don’t have to worry about their safety, there are no vehicles around, they can play in the backyards and have all their buddies from the neighborhood there.

It’s an unusual situation, just based on the arrangement of the existing houses. But I don’t see why any new development couldn’t appropriate this same concept.

I love the density in East Liberty—not necessarily resident density, but street density. Lake Street is one in particular. If you have any cars parked, it becomes a one-lane road. It’s the counterpoint to Fairpark’s ultra-wide streets. In East Liberty, you see true housing density, but they’re all singlefamily homes instead of boxy apartment buildings. I thought that was an excellent use of space.

Prior to this project, I could probably count on two hands the number of times I was on the west side, which is, in retrospect, very unfortunate. It’s now one of my favorite areas, to be honest. The area around Riverside Park is another one I’d like to live in.

The park is really large and you have easy access to the Jordan River Parkway Trail.

There are great tennis courts and a playground—I take my kids there almost on a weekly basis. Everyone defaults to Liberty Park and Sugar House Park, but I feel like Riverside is on par with those two parks, for sure.

South of Riverside Park, the fact that you have an above-ground river system flowing through Jordan Park and Three Creeks Confluence is very atypical, especially compared to the east side of the city where a lot of the creeks are either covered or underground. You can travel the Jordan River by kayak, and on the west side of Three Creeks, there’s a bike trail now that you can easily navigate through.

My kid loves the play area at Three Creeks. She could just hop on those logs for hours if I would let her. And the integration of art with the metal cutouts along the bridge is a cool way to see local artists getting spotlighted all in one place.

In the Marmalade District west of the state Capitol, you come across micro parks like Silver Park (near 500 North and Center Street) and Pugsley Ouray Park (500 North and Pugsley Street). These are parks that are so small that on Google Maps they look like they’re streets. Maybe two houses could sit on them. You see very small green spaces pop up throughout the valley. If you’re driving, there’s no way you’re going to discover these things. But if you live nearby, you don’t have to hop your kids in the car and drive three miles away to use a playground. Having more, smaller parks seems to make sense.

You’ve probably driven past the Miller Bird Refuge (near East High School and Sunnyside Avenue), but you would never know it’s there. The entrance at 900 South (between Diestel Road and Military Drive) is very hidden. It’s just a fence—that’s the entrance. Right now, it’s unfortunate because with the drought levels, there’s not really a creek flowing.

When I ran on 900 South, I saw the sign and went home and looked it up. The next day I took my kids down there. It’s a short walk, maybe half a mile. The park is also a bird refuge—you hear birds all over the place. It’s a great way to disconnect and just listen.

You’re in a neighborhood near major streets, but you don’t hear any of that. That was one of my favorite discoveries.

Another favorite is Parley’s Way Park. On a the map, it looks like a little sliver. Everyone knows about Tanner Park, located south of I-80. But Parley’s Way Park is north of I-80 and squeezed between the freeway and Foothill Drive. If you live in the neighborhood, I guarantee you know of it. If you’ve been on Foothill or I-80 you’ve driven by it a zillion times. But running the street, you can stop and see this sliver of green space that abuts the interstate.

Pit Stops

When I was on the west side, just because I had been there so seldomly, I made a point after my runs to try different places to eat. All Chay (1264 W. 500 North, SLC, 801-521-4789), within the Fairpark community, is great. The fact that it’s a vegan, vegetarian, Vietnamese restaurant really checks a lot of boxes in my family. And it’s near the center of the city (more on that later).

Most people don’t go down 700 West because it’s heavily industrial. But that’s too bad because they’re missing out on Victor’s Restaurant and Tires (1406 S. 700 West, SLC, 801-3266182, victorsrestaurant. com). It’s a restaurant attached to a tire shop near the Sorensen Center with amazing tamales—that’s basically the headline right there.

Sugar House is ginormous—it’s basically 12 communities, and people sometimes mistake parts of it for South Salt Lake. Over by the Nibley Park Golf Course, there’s Taqueria Los Lee (2646 S. 700 East, SLC, 385-259-0764, taquerialoslee.com). The front facade is a cup of coffee.

It used to be—very briefly—a coffee shop, and the new tenants haven’t changed it. I crack a smile whenever I pass by it.

Another shop embedded within a neighborhood is Brownies! Brownies! Brownies! (1751 S. 1100 East, SLC, 801-738-5997, browniesx3.com) by Westminster College—and that’s another one that’s had a rotating cast of tenants. For the past few years, it’s been this amazing brownie shop.

Any time something good happens in our family, we go down there and get a brownie.

I know the city, but I don’t know the city— it’s a weird kind of feeling. I’ve been everywhere, but I don’t know, personally, what it’s like to live in these neighborhoods.

I think a lot about scale. There are roughly 200,000 residents in Salt Lake City, and I’ve been by each and every person’s house.

Very few can say that.

I know what the number 200,000 means now. We’re always poor estimators, but now when I hear that more than 600,000 people have died from COVID-19, that’s like everywhere I’ve been three times over.

It’s a massive amount.

It’s really fun to discover. That was a big takeaway from this—just the joy of exploring. There’s so many people—and I was like this myself—who go to work, go home, go eat at XYZ restaurant, go to ABC park, and that’s their bubble.

This running project was, admittedly, a bit excessive. But even if you can take a different route home, or maybe you ride your bike a little more often in a new area, I guarantee you’ll see different things and experience different things that will be positive and beneficial in your life.

So much is made about distinct differences in neighborhoods. It’s true to an extent, but you also get to appreciate and notice the similarities. People are working on cars in front of their house all over the place. Kids are playing in their front yards all over the place.

We’re all in the same city. And collectively, how we’re different makes us so much better, holistically, as a city. CW

Normally, I run on the street itself because it’s usually the most flat surface. When the city closed down a dozen or so streets for the Stay Safe, Stay Active initiative, I took advantage of it. It didn’t necessarily impede traffic that badly, because most of the closed streets were not large arterial roads.

The runs around the airport were very interesting. They’re fun routes—you can do plane spotting and watch arrivals and departures directly over your head. One route is 2100 North, which is a popular bike route. The only car traffic you really get is employees at the FedEx or DHL facilities out there. The road snakes around, and you literally split the airport landing strips. You can run in there, and it ends at the air traffic control tower.

Before the pandemic, I would take my kid on the S-Line Streetcar in Sugar House.

It’s a fantastic sightseeing adventure for a kid to look out the window of a train, but they’re going slowly and can absorb what they’re seeing—there’s murals and graffiti artwork as well as public, funded art along the tracks that is really interesting. While there is art along all the TRAX lines, the concentration on the S-Line is much higher.

I love talking about the parts of Fairpark east of Interstate 15. These are really random spots, like the townhomes on Hodges Lane, where you can literally play wall ball off the interstate boundary.

South Temple is probably my second favorite street, after 900 West. There are some new sculptures that have gone in, and the properties and houses are stunning. I’m actually reading a book on South Temple history and they talk about all the changes over the years and the different architecture.

I want to talk about all the religious buildings. In Salt Lake, everyone thinks of Temple Square—and rightfully so—but there are amazing religious buildings of all varieties: St. Anne Catholic Church, with that giant, sloping awning off of 2100 South; on 700 West, there is a Buddhist temple, an Islamic center, Our Lady Guadalupe and the Summum Pyramid; on South Temple, there’s Cathedral of the Madeleine and on 700 East, there’s the round Mount Tabor Lutheran Church. They’re actually some of the most interesting buildings in the city.

After running the roads, you realize how incredibly far west the city goes. Some people might assume the city’s center is somewhere near I-15, but they’d be radically off. I calculated the true center of the city, and it is at Walnut Drive and 1400 West (near the Northwest Recreation Center), toward the edge of the city’s residential areas. You’re in Fairpark, but getting close to Westpointe.

I actually emailed the Salt Lake City Council to see if we could get a marker placed on the sidewalk. I got a letter back and—kind of going full circle here—because they’re annexing an area near Parley’s Canyon, the city center is going to shift to a spot that is not publicly accessible.

’ve been visiting neighborhood gastropubs a bit more lately, and I think that cities should do more to cultivate this kind of establishment for the hangout potential alone. Take Localz Bistro (1850 E. 9400 South, 801-432-7604, localzbistro.com) for instance. It hasn’t even been open for a year, but it’s become an authentic snapshot of the East Sandy vibe. This cozy, family-owned spot—with a full wine, beer and cocktail menu and a decently-sized patio offering a nice view of our Wasatch Mountains—won me over even though they spell locals with a “z.”

I’ve written about how dining research often becomes an excuse to round up my family and check out a new place, and my first trip to Localz was one such occasion. Now that the temperatures are coming down from triple digits, outdoor dining has become a lot more enjoyable, so we opted for some seats on the patio. I could understand how some might see the bistro’s location in the Little Cottonwood Shopping Center as a detriment to their patio experience, but it’s also a lot closer to the mountains than you’d expect. The proximity to our majestic peaks does plenty to direct one’s focus on one of our state’s best features.

Being a kid-friendly place that also provides parents with some alcohol is a great way to get people in the door, but stocking your menu with a gallery of Southern comfort food is only going to help. I suppose this was the seed that Localz planted in my brain after I wrote about its opening late last year; I am, and always will be, a sucker for Southern cuisine. I started with the jambalaya ($18) and my wife got the miso glazed salmon ($20), which was the daily special. My kiddo is leaning hard into a mac and cheese phase, so she was happy with the Lil Shredderz menu which featured the sun and moon of her culinary world.

The jambalaya was appropriately packed with a mix of grilled shrimp, chicken and slices of Tooele sausage. Though the server warned me that it was on the spicier side of the menu, I thought it was mid-range on my own spice spectrum, but that didn’t deter from the meal as a whole. It’s exactly what you want when you order a bowl of jamba-

laya—a bunch of grilled meats tossed into a flavorful bed of basmati rice. If it’s around lunchtime, you can also get this jambalaya in a wrap ($15), which is a fantastic idea—jambalaya burritos need to be more of a thing.

My wife’s miso salmon was probably the best overall dish of the evening as far as construction and execution goes. It was served on top of some creamy white cheddar grits with some braised greens, and hit every note it was going for. As I mentioned, it was a special, but it sounds similar to the blackened ahi ($22) on the regular menu. My daughter also thought highly of her mac and cheese, which I thought was pretty damn tasty myself—even though I had to work on convincing her to share some with me.

I also wanted to try the shrimp and grits— they have two kinds!—so I went back for a late lunch. You’ve got the option to go with New Orleans style BBQ shrimp and grits ($18) or Low Country shrimp and grits ($18).

Each one has its strengths—including gigantic shrimp—but I think the Low Country shrimp and grits is the way to go. The barbecue version went a little heavy on the salt and cayenne pepper mixture, which overwhelmed the simplicity of that flavorful shrimp and those creamy, cheesy grits. The Low Country version ramps up the earthy, stick-to-your-bones quality that I like about shrimp and grits with the addition of mushrooms, onion and a bit of bacon.

Like any self-respecting gastropub, Localz also has a selection of starters and desserts for those after more of a snack with their drinks. Poutine ($10) is always a welcome sight, as fried cheese curds drenched in gravy is truly a gift from God, and the bacon-wrapped BBQ shrimp ($16) plays to the restaurants strong seafood game. I was also a fan of the fish tacos ($11), which come street-taco style with a nice seared mahi, pickled cabbage and creamy avocado sauce. If you’re after something sweet, just get the bread pudding ($7) without thinking about it—it’s an enormous slab of soft, doughy goodness swimming in caramel. I know bread pudding is kinda basic, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious.

Wrapping up my experience at Localz, I have to say this is a place with a lot of heart, and a menu that communicates that affection to its diners. I appreciate places where I can go with my wife and kiddo and wind down with some good food and good drinks, and that is exactly what Localz offers. CW

e are well into Oktoberfest season, and there are plenty of traditional beers hitting draft handles all over the state. One of the more popular lagers you’ll see when you’re out and about is the German Helles. “Helles” means “pale in color,” and it tends to have a fuller body than the typical pilsner. I have three to tell you about this week, and there are many more out there waiting to be tried.

Bewilder - Oktoberfest: Pours a very clear, straw-gold color with a big, dense, long-lasting white head (rather Pils-like, actually). Big bready malts up front with mellow, spicy, even slightly citrusy hops.

The same big, bready, mildly sweet malts emerge up front in the taste, seeming to linger then blend quickly into spicy hops … and then they’re gone The breadiness lingers in the aftertaste, while the citrus character and some mild bitterness make themselves apparent in the finish, but that’s it. It’s really a rather smooth, easy drink with no bells or whistles. Mouthfeel is soft and smooth to lightly crisp, with a dry finish and light body.

Overall: Very easy to slug down—sort of a cross between a German Pils and Bavarian Helles. The breadiness is delicious upfront, with medium hop bitterness in the finish that makes you think “Pilsner,” but either way, this is a pretty satisfying beer for anytime drinking.

Hopkins - Munich Helles: Pours a light gold color. It’s unfiltered, which gives it a nice authentic look. The head is white and bubbly, retaining around the circumference of the glass, and has good staying power. The nose is bready and malty, but

there’s a grassy or hoppy (not sure) bitterness that shows itself somewhere in there.

It smells like the forests of Bavaria.

The taste is almost exactly like the nose: malty and on the bold side up front, then fresh floral hops come to balance in the middle, and the finish is dry and (as another patron commented) “woody.” The mouthfeel is on the full-bodied side of the lager spectrum, perhaps medium overall; carbonation is high, but not excessively.

Very smooth, and the yeast hangs out on the tongue for just a little while. You could safely chug this beer if you wanted, but it’s so good that I wouldn’t do that.

Overall: A really great beer here. Had I been blindfolded, I would have easily identified this as a Helles just by the aroma alone. Worth stopping by for a pint, for sure.

Uinta - Westside Special Helles: Poured from draft into a shaker glass, it looks pale yellow and clear, the active carbonation feeding a white head that thins out. It looks great, but I wish it was in a pilsner glass or a mug (that’s on me). Smell is bready malt, crackers, some herbal hops— a pretty subtle aroma, but quite enticing.

Taste starts with sweet and malty bread and crackers, while the middle sees some bitterness enter in. Hops pop up, earthy and herbal, providing solid balance with the sweetness. The finish has some bitterness as the hops continue their work, but the beer cleans up nicely in the end. Feel is medium-bodied, with scrubbing carbonation that feels lively all through the sip.

Overall: This is an excellent, excellent beer—easy to drink, but with enough flavor to keep you thinking about what you’re experiencing as you sip. I can’t wait for the next one.

European lagers are starting to come back into vogue after many decades of hoppy ales dominating the hearts of craft beer lovers. Once you have that perfect lager at the right time, that lightbulb will go off above your head and you’ll exclaim, “I get it!” You’ll find all of these on draft and available to go in growlers and crowlers at their respective brewhouse pubs. Days of Sound debuts with music and more in central Utah.

hile Utah tourism explodes, central Utah is quietly cool—they’ve got Pando, Fishlake National Forest and Mystic Hot Springs. And, if all goes well, they’ll have a new music festival, too.

The Western half of Fishlake National Forest, split by the Sevier Valley, is where some local music makers and enthusiasts are setting out to host their Days of Sound Music Festival, which debuts this weekend, Friday, Oct. 1 - Sunday, Oct. 3. The new outdoor camping festival is meant to give locals the chance to both play and be immersed in a musical experience out in beautiful Utah nature, while also bringing in talent from all over the place.

The intention for Days of Sound was set this summer by Alisa Fedele—an Australian-by-way-of-Los Angeles musician who recently moved to SLC over the course of the pandemic—along with local music producer Bryce Myers and brothers Graham and Forrester Pickett. After practicing with small backyard shows and a mini-fest filled with friends out near Hanksville, they began searching for the perfect space to host a real festival. They finally connected with their friend James Jenson, whose family offered up their piece of land down in the Fishlake National Forest.

“With all the festivals shutting down last year, and so many of our friends just wanting something to do, we [want to] just make

it happen,” Forrester Pickett says. “I think a big thing, too, is that there isn’t something in Salt Lake as a festival that would highlight local artists, as well as [providing] a reason for people to gather and camp, and be in that immersive kind of experience.”

Myers concurs, and explains his own motivations for wanting to create a new festival in Utah: “I’ve gone to festivals a lot over the last decade, and really enjoy the space that’s brought together by artists and music enthusiasts. It’s just a really cool, magical, inspiring thing.” He cites festivals like Lightning in a Bottle in California as a great example of a festival with atmosphere and consciousness, the kind he’d like to see in Utah. “They have the craziest, coolest stage designs [and] focus on negating your environmental impact,” Myers adds. “I guess it’s their efforts that we’re aspiring to.”

For that reason, they’ve got a car pass fee of $25 to encourage carpooling to the somewhat remote and delicate forested area. And as far as COVID-consciousness, this festival is completely outdoors, save for some port-a-potties and a yurt or two for storing gear. Campers can camp as far away from one another as they want, and there’s a cap at 300, though Myers thinks turnout will be even lower in the end. Proof of vax or negative test is required, and rapid tests will be onsite for $75.

“Since we’re doing it at a smaller capacity with COVID, this is going to be a big learning experience for us not shooting too far for the stars,” Myers says. “It will be a very good, fun, special experience because it’s such an intimate group of people.”

If all goes well, they do want to go bigger, with sponsors and vendors included.

But even as it stands, the festival has a pretty robust lineup so far. Fedele will be playing as Insali, and she’s used her music contacts to bring in all kinds of artists from her many corners of the world, including Los Angeles, Mexico and Australia. There’s also a great lineup of locals, despite the Kilby Court Block Party happening the same weekend and scooping many acts that Fedele asked to come.

Among them are Sunhills, First Daze, The Button-Ups, Casio Ghost, Flip Forces and a set from Myers performing as Late Riser.

While they had a small budget to work with for this debut, Fedele said artists have still been happy to sign on. “That’s how a lot of events work at first, you really just gotta know the artist and they’re doing you favors. To be part of something bigger than us, you gotta start somewhere, so they’re in it for that as well, to be part of the community,” she says.

In addition to the music, there will be opportunities to really immerse in the environment, including yoga, workshops on inner-child expansion, poetry, dance, Qigong, Reiki healing and psychic readings. Myers explains, “I feel like during the day—obviously music’s going to be epic and fun—but there’s also going to be that daytime feeling of, ‘What if I wanted to get a little exercise in right now, learn something new, experience something out of the ordinary that could lead to some sort of personal benefit?’”

Pickett adds, getting back to the point of the festival, “Since we are on a beautiful piece of property, and not a lot of people get a chance to get out into that space, we want to offer something along the lines of— instead of just focusing on the party aspect—being aware of yourself.” Tickets to the festival are $75, and can be found with more info at daysofsound.com. John Legend Visits Sandy Amp

Even the big stars weren’t immune to having to cancel tours in the light of 2020, and that includes John Legend.

Originally set to embark on a tour for his 2020 album Bigger Love that same year, he rescheduled to fall of this year, with such a wildly successful tour that a second leg has been announced, and it’s kicking off in Salt Lake City at the Sandy Amphitheater on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. The album is full of classic Legend, brimming with sensuality and ruminations on the “love song” genre he does so well—like on “Actions,” where against a gooey, sampled beat from Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode,” he sings that “actions speak louder than love songs / I’ve been doing it all wrong.” That doesn’t stop him from also comparing his method of stewing up some love to that of a “Slow Cooker,” so his inventiveness within the love song genre remains. There are also stirring features from the likes of Gary Clark Jr. (“Wild”) and Jhene Aiko (“U Move, I Move”), among dance-ready pop tracks like “Don’t Walk Away” featuring Koffee. Lucy Dacus, Bartees Strange at Metro Music Hall

On her third full album—Home Video, released this year—Lucy Dacus deploys her showstopping lyricism and clear, smooth vocals to explore her own past growing up as a Christian youth. But as much as she allows intimate glimpses at deeply detailed memories—like the stunning single “Thumbs” that recalls, with film-like closeness, a friend’s meeting with an estranged father—she also digs into pop elements with great success.

Songs like “First Time’’ ring with an upbeat indie pop rhythm, and the melody of the guitars stands out more than ever on this record. Thursday, Sept. 30 finds Judas Priest stopping in to Utah on their current tour, which is celebrating “50 Heavy Metal Years.” And celebrate they should, being one of the foundational bands of a genre that’s still going strong with offshoots upon offshoots. Their soaring power chords, over-the-top drama and driving, crushing tracks all changed the rock ‘n’ roll game forever. The British heavy metal rockers emerged from a hotbed of prog rock and a general trend of rock ‘n’ roll that moved in the direction of heavier riffs.

From that fertile soil, the “Metal Gods” built themselves up using a mythic, operatic style, which with their popularity grew into a more mainstream-friendly look and feel, filled out with what would become their signature hard, fast and brutal approach—fully realized on albums like 1980’s British Steel. Since then, they’ve spent the last 40 years building on that reputation for pure heavy metal rock, and metal fans would be remiss not to catch these founders of the genre when they stop in at the Maverik Center. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Arlo Parks has been around for longer than she has. The solo artist is only 21, but her music is everywhere. Gaining fast fame from the time she was a teenager, the British artist was soon out with her 2019 EP Sophie, with all its sophisticated beats, youthful melancholy and her signature honeyed delivery.

There she established herself as a lyricist clearly youthful, yet also unique and smart (“when I hear MF DOOM / it feels like you must be around somewhere”). She only builds on this craft on her debut full-length release, 2021’s Collapsed In Sunbeams, which opens with a title-track of spoken-word poetry. It’s a choice that can sometimes

feel pretentious on any other artist besides Parks, who bleeds relatability. Her penchant for funk rhythms seems like some kind of conduit for her natural warmth, and her nods to Radiohead-era indie (“Eugene” feels like something straight off In Rainbows guitarwise) feel like a logical vessel for her heady, emotionally-rich lyrics. Catch the young artist as she takes to the road in support of her stunning debut, alongside the six-piece group Michelle (how will they fit on the Kilby stage?), who lean into a genre fusion of seeming growing popularity among zoomers: bedroom R&B. Avatar Is Going Hunting

Swedish contemporary heavy metal band Avatar is currently out on a tour they waited a year and a half to launch thanks to the pandemic. The band has been releasing music since 2006, starting out as a firmly melodic death metal band, chasing heaviness wherever it thrashed all the way into the 20-teens—until 2018, where they leaned more into their extravagant and absurd tendencies. On Avatar Country, the band used the expertise that comes with metal to lean into a different kind of camp, spoofing on different kinds of metal bands, and even doing a honky-tonk-slash-AC/DC thing on “The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country,” which breaks down into a goofy, sensual rhythm that marks their musical talent in a Ween-type way. They followed that bonkers album with a return to some seriousness and a more traditional heaviness on 2020’s Hunter Gatherer, which finds its inspiration in the bleakness of the world’s current affairs. One can hardly blame them.

The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark feels redundant rather than revelatory

T

he title of The Many Saints of Newark is a great one: memorable, unusual and, most, of all ironic, because this is a movie about mob guys who are the furthest things from saints. But it’s also just plain factual, since the movie is specifically about Dickie Moltisanti, criminal mentor to Tony Soprano and father to Christopher Moltisanti, central figures in the much-loved and highly praised 1999–2007 HBO TV series The Sopranos. “Moltisanti”? It’s Italian for “many saints.”

Here’s the thing, though: Did we need a Tony Soprano origin story? This fleshing out of Dickie—who was dead by the era the TV show is set in, yet whose spirit loomed over it in numerous ways—is meant to show how he influenced young Tony. But wasn’t The Sopranos itself pretty much all about Tony trying to unravel, through therapy, where he came from psychologically, and why he was the way he was?

So, alas, Many Saints feels redundant, and in more ways than one. Series creator David Chase wrote the script with Lawrence Konner, and director Alan Taylor directed several Sopranos episodes, yet this feels more like GoodFellaslite than The Sopranos. There’s little of the introspection and intriguing self-awareness that made the series such an unexpected joy, which is perhaps not surprising: a movie is not a TV show. But there’s several TV seasons’ worth of story crammed into Many Saints, to the point where the elisions needed to make it all fit into two hours sometimes become distractingly confusing or exasperating.

One big example: Is it Dickie’s wife or his mistress who gives birth to baby Christopher? It’s the sort of thing that knocks you right out of the story as you attempt to decode the clues the script has littered up to this point, but it’s not intended to be a mystery. It doesn’t help that the actresses in the roles—respectively, Gabriella Piazza and Michela De Rossi—look very alike. And it’s indicative of the short shrift the female characters get, even when they’re meant to be key to understanding the unexamined hypocrisies and explosive violence of Dickie’s personality. The women here

are sacrificed to men’s journeys, literally and figuratively, in a way all too familiar onscreen, which was not the case with The Sopranos.

There are saving graces to this often-trying movie, mostly from the spectacular cast. Alessandro Nivola is riveting as Dickie, giving him more depth than the script does.

Ray Liotta does some of his best work since perhaps GoodFellas itself as an elder Moltisanti who becomes an unlikely sounding board for Dickie. Vera Farmiga as Livia, Tony’s mother, elbows her way into a bigger role than the movie wants to give her room for, letting quiet moments speak to Livia’s frustrations and disappointments with her husband—mobster Johnny Boy (Jon Bernthal), who is often away in prison—and how her unhappiness affects Tony.

And it is beyond poignant to see Michael Gandolfini, son of the late Sopranos star James, damn near bring the gone-too-soon actor back to life as teenaged Tony. Gandolfini not only looks like his father, embodying Tony in a way that avoids impersonation, but he manages the same roiling depth of feeling in his baleful, angry glare, which does more to make Tony real that almost anything we see happen here.

The evocation of the period is striking, too, from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s; a scene with a Mister Softee ice cream truck slammed me right back to my 1970s suburban New York childhood, just for how right it gets the

look and feel. But the volatility of the era—there’s a long sequence during the first half of the movie set during Newark’s 1967 race riots—is a story in itself, and perhaps the most unforgivable shortcut the movie takes. Much of the conflict in Dickie’s journey comes from clashes with former criminal colleague Harold McBrayer (Leslie Odom Jr), who decides to go into rival felonious business on his own.

Odom is mesmerizing, and Harold deserves his own movie, not least because white filmmakers using Black pain as a backdrop and opportunity for the growth of white characters is yet another tired cinematic cliché that The Many Saints of Newark indulges in. Anyone who loves The Sopranos and appreciates how it continually upended stereotypes is excused from expecting more from this film.

Uh oh! Is the bubble bursting? Park City’s Board of Realtors reports that all three of their major weekly stats—new, pending and closed listings—continue to drop when compared to 2020.

That makes seven weeks in a row this has happened. And the drops are either the largest year-to-date (new listings) or secondlargest (sold listings). “Pendings” are down as well, but not as severely.

They see a trend developing here, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the market traditionally trends downward starting in late summer. That’s because people are getting their kids ready for school or are going back to classes themselves. Inventory is still at insane lows (less than a month’s worth of inventory).

Most Boards of Realtors/MLS sites are reporting a slowing in September, from Washington County to northern Utah. Interest rates on home mortgages remain at all-time lows and the Federal Reserve isn’t expected to raise rates anytime during these last few months of the year. The stock markets in the U.S. are at the highest they’ve ever been and there really aren’t any indicators that the financial markets are headed to hell in a handbasket. So what does this mean to you?

If you’re in the market to shop for a home or condo, now would be a great time to get super serious! You may have a chance to not get in a bidding war on a property or only go up against a few other buyers in an attempt to win a contract. Although homes at entry-level prices are still flying off the MLS in record time, you may be able to discover a gem that has been sitting too long on the market at an inflated price.

Many property owners have dipped their toes in the real estate market this year to see how much buyers are willing to pay for their property. Given that Salt Lake City homes were selling in less than 10 days this summer, a home still on the market after 30 days looks quite suspicious. Sav v y buyers who’ve been paying attention to the MLS feeds ask me, “What’s wrong with that house? It’s been on the market for three months! Is it broken, or haunted?”

My sage advice to any buyer who hasn’t been able to secure a contract this summer is look at properties that have “soured” on the market by sitting there without aggressive pricing and price reductions. Grab your cajones and throw in a low bid and see what bounces back at you. It doesn’t cost a dime to make an offer on a home, and who knows, you might just get an accepted contract!

(Mind you, if you do get a seller to agree to your terms, you would have to deposit your earnest money within four days of the contract being accepted.)

Back to the bubble—no, it’s not bursting. It was 1928 when Virginia Oliver, at age 8, started trapping lobsters, and she hasn’t stopped working the harvest yet.

Oliver, now 101 years old, is a sternman on her 78-year-old son’s boat, which bears her name. In that role, she measures and bands lobsters, but Oliver, of Rockland, Maine, also loads traps with small fish to attract lobsters and gets up before dawn to head out to sea. The Associated Press reported that a couple of years ago, a crab nipped her finger and she had to have seven stitches. When the doctor asked Oliver why she was still lobstering, she snapped back, “Well, that’s ‘cause I want to do it.” Oliver has no plans to retire. “I like being along the water.

And so I’m going to keep on doing it just as long as I can.”

Undignified Death Timothy Satterlee, 71, of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, was attacked on Aug. 30 by a 12-foot-long, 504-pound alligator during flooding following Hurricane Ida, the Daily Beast reported. His wife told police she was able to free him from the gator and pull him onto the front steps of their home, but while she went to get help, Satterlee disappeared. The parish sheriff’s office said on Sept. 13 that it had captured the gator with “what appears to be human remains” in its stomach. The coroner’s office was confirming that the remains were Satterlee’s. “This is a horrible tragedy and my sincere condolences and sympathy goes to the Satterlee family,” Sheriff Randy Smith said.

Fine Points of the Law On Sept. 13, a road rage incident in Amarillo, Texas, all started when Car No. 1 tried to pass Car Nos. 2 and 3. No. 1 got past the first car, but No. 3 sped up to prevent the pass. As Car No. 1 passed No. 3, someone in No. 1 fired shots into No. 3. “The victim in this case did have a handgun in their vehicle and returned fire at the suspect,” Amarillo police Cpl. Jeb Hilton told KVIITV. And here’s where Texas’ tricky law comes in: While it is against Texas law to shoot a firearm from a moving or stationary vehicle on a roadway, if you’re shooting in self-defense, you’re off the hook. The person in Car No. 3 will not face any charges.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.

Ewwwww! n Shirley Wright-Johnson was shopping for pizza rolls in an Oklahoma City Crest Foods store on Sept. 12 when she literally put her hand in it: As she reached into the frozen case to pick up the rolls, “I grabbed the bag, I felt something smushy on the bag, so I turned it over and there it was,” Wright-Johnson told KFORTV. “It” was human feces. “I was so disgusted I was almost in tears,” she said. Moore, Oklahoma, police investigated, checking store video cameras, where they saw a man in “the cooler section, where he proceeded to defecate inside one of the coolers before leaving the business,” said Lt. Kyle Johnson. The suspect was apprehended and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on unrelated charges, police said. n Here’s one way to swear off fast-food burgers: Estefany Benitez of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, visited her favorite burger chain, Hot Burger, on Sept. 12 and got an extra topping with her sandwich: a rotting human finger. The Daily Mail reported that Benitez bit into the burger and felt something unfamiliar, then pulled the finger out of her mouth. While the restaurant “carried on serving customers like nothing had happened,” Benitez said, a company representative told her the burgers arrive at the store pre-prepared. But later, Edson Claure, director of the National Police’s Special Crime Fighting Force, confirmed that a company employee had lost part of his finger at work. It’s not lost anymore!

Sign of the Times The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is having to take drastic measures in response to a supply shortage of hooch in its staterun stores, The Morning Call reported. Starting on Sept. 17, liquor stores will have a two-bottles-per-day limit on a long list of specific products, including bourbons, tequilas and champagnes.

The PLCB said the limit will remain “for the foreseeable future.”

Least Competent Criminal A 17-year-old driver in Youngstown, Ohio, was pulled over by police after he ran a stop sign and drove at high speeds on Sept.

15, WKBN-TV reported. When police spoke to the nervous young man, they smelled what they thought was marijuana, and in the car they found a device that is used to load ammunition into a semi-automatic firearm. They also noticed that his belt was unbuckled. The teenager explained to police that the device belonged to his sister, and regarding his belt, he said, “I ain’t gonna lie, I was trying to take a s--t.” But police also searched the area where he had been driving and found a 9mm handgun

Oh, Canada In the small town of Durham in Ontario, Canada, an unidentified driver sealed his fate on Sept. 15 when, at about 1:45 a.m., he began driving a red Cadillac in slow circles around the parking lot of the Durham Regional Police station, CTV News reported. An officer inside the building noticed the car and went outside, asking the driver to stop. “The driver did not comply and continued to drive slowly in and around the parked police vehicles while flashing his headlights,” police said. Finally, two cruisers boxed him in and stopped the car.

The driver was arrested for driving while impaired.

Irony Philip Morris International, maker of Marlboro and Parliament cigarettes, has sealed a deal with Vectura, a U.K.-based company that makes medicines—including inhalers for respiratory conditions—with a $1.1 billion bid. The BBC reported on Sept. 16 that PMI’s CEO, Jacek Olczak, is “excited” to expand the company’s product lines, but medical organizations and charities are less than thrilled about the purchase. “It creates perverse incentives for PMI to sell more of its harmful products so they might then profit again through treating smoking-related diseases,” said Sarah Woolnough, CEO of Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation. The agreement is set to be final on Sept. 30.

Weird Science Animal behavioral scientists at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, responding to the critical problem of livestock waste, have trained calves to urinate in a MooLoo—a special pen with an AstroTurf surface, the Associated Press reported.

Perhaps you didn’t know that urine mixed with feces makes ammonia, which is an issue for the environment, or that cows produce an impressive amount of urine in a day: about 8 gallons.

About the potty-training endeavor, the study’s senior author, Lindsay Matthews, said, “The cows are at least as good as children, age 2 to 4 years, at least as quick.” Researchers lured the cows into the pen with a sweet treat and then rewarded them when they urinated. If, after training, they went outside the MooLoo, they got a squirt of cold water. Next up: No. 2.
