JACKSONVILLE

The largest city in Florida may come as a surprise to many. With a population of over 1,300,000, Jacksonville is located in the northeast corner of the state on the St. Johns River. The city Jacksonville has a surging gay community, regardless to the city's conservative roots and image. The Advocate ranked Jacksonville as one of the "top 5 emerging cities of gays and lesbians." Evidence of the progressive trend can be discovered in the San Marco, Riverside or Avondale neighborhoods, where you can casually walk to sample the eclectic charm, retro boutiques and visible gay culture. The city continues its uniquely southern flavor while gaining a significant population of LGBT from all areas, seeking a better economy, less expensive housing and, of course, the Florida sunrays of light.

The month of September in Jacksonville gave way to the pageant season. Miss Heart of North Florida was crowned to Miss Brittany Moore. Miss Jacksonville was crowned to Miss Sondra Todd and the Miss RIOT was crowned to Mister AJ Menendez and Miss Karrissa Wade. One could assume the local talent is flourishing in Jacksonville. Miss Brittany Moore will represent at the Miss Heart of Florida on December 16, at the Honey weeklong bowling tournament with over 400 bowlers from around the Pot in Tampa Bay, FL, along with First Runner-Up Miss Chasity Ross Boen. Written by: Shane Ross Born and raised in California, Andrew Christian knew at an early age that the fashion world was where he belonged. Right out of high school, he began working for other people but quickly realized that he was destined to start his own label. What originally started as a clothing line in his garage in 2001 has blossomed into a successful brand sold at all the hottest boutiques around the world, including Kitson, Fred Segal, and Patricia Field to name a few. In the past few years, one of the more popular buzz words in corporate culture has been “outsourcing” but not for Andrew Christian. He strongly believes in doing everything in-house, from design concept; to creating samples; to production; to shipping; and to printing. The fact that production and quality control is done right there, allows him to tap into the latest styles and fads and quickly put them in production as opposed to contacting an overseas operation. Just exactly who is the “Andrew Christian Man”? Apparently, there is not one specific type. Recently, Andrew conducted a survey and the results proved his customers were all sorts. They ranged from fasnestas, to jocks, to everyday Joes. In fact, his latest photo shoot had the theme of HOT NERDS with some hot Swedish models to which I chimed a bit too eagerly: “We love Swedish boys!”- right Channa? When asked what his biggest market was besides the United States, (I was expecting him to say Canada or the United Kingdom), he shockingly informed us it was Japan. Andrew, unlike most designers I have met, is very mild-mannered and soft-spoken. He has a quiet confidence that is very endearing and captivating. I don’t know why I was surprised, as this was the same type of persona he presented on the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency during season three. Speaking of Janice Dickinson, we asked Andrew what it was like working with her. He stated that she was a total professional and both of them got along famously. Here are some of the highlights from our interview with Andrew CX: When did you first start to design? AC: I was always sort of a creative person. It was what I went towards as a creative outlet. CX: But when did you first know you were a fashionista? AC: I used to go to underground clubs a lot. I made my own outfits, and people noticed them. I started selling to friends. Then one of the promoters had a store, and that's kind of where it started... CX: Which do you prefer designing underwear or swimwear? AC: I don't know if I have a preference. It would be like picking your favorite child.

CX: Okay well what is your favorite one piece? Do a Sophie's Choice for me. AC: The thermal I did with a distressed wash on it and with an eagle print. CX: Here'd you come up with the iconic logo? AC: It was a play on my last name. I didn't want any religious connotation, so I picked a neutral cross. Some people think it is Swiss, or lifeguard or Christian. It's open to its own interpretation...It has great appeal. CX: If you weren't a fabulous designer, what would you want to be? AC: There are so many things I would like to do... I'd like to be an artist, do socially relevant art. I'd like to be a DJ. What I really want to do is make a video, be in a video. Come up with the concept and direct, produce and star. CX: What influences your designs? AC: I have a European aesthetic, but I am a Californian designer. The California lifestyle is really evident in my clothes. It's a casual laid-back lifestyle. You don't have to be dressed up to go anywhere in California. Jeans and t-shirt go everywhere. It all just depends on what you wear, and how you put it together. CX: If we checked your underwear drawer, would there be anyone but your underwear in it? AC: I pretty much only wear my underwear, but I wear them also before they are released. I have to make sure if they are comfortable, if anything needs to be changed. To see more of Andrew Christian’s clothing, go to andrewchristian.com.

"Good people get good stuff. Bad people get bad stuff." The Beatles sang on Abbey Road, "In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." I love the Beatles, but I take issue with them here. After all, the world runs on retribution. Moralists interpret misfortune as the karmic result of misbehavior. "You failed to obey God, so He gave you an illness." Such rulebased economies of punishment and reward may be the default mode of the human heart, but that doesn't make them any less brutal! This does not mean that our actions don't have consequences. Blow your money on booze, and you will likely reap poverty, loneliness, and cirrhosis of the liver. To conclude that suffering people have somehow heaped up trouble for themselves on the Cosmic Registry and that God is doling out the misery in direct proportion would be more than mistaken; it would be cruel. While no one can deny that our actions have consequences, we do God, and ourselves, a great disservice when we project this schema. The lab test results come back positive, and we interpret it as some sort of punishment. Your relationship falls apart, and you assume God is meting out His judgment on your indiscretions.

when we flip it around. If you are suffering, you have done something to merit it.

Many of us would object to the accusation that we agree with such beliefs. Think about the last fight you had with your significant other. Was there an element of deserving tucked into the conflict? "You hurt me, so When you and I insist on that all-too-comfortable paradigm of cosmic score now I'll hurt you"? I can't tell you how much self-abuse I've encountered in keeping, we've adopted a Westernized form of Hinduism - karma. If you are my years of ministry that had elements of inward-directed retribution at its a bad person and things are going well for you, it is only a matter of time core. We are all helpless moralizers, especially when it comes to suffering. before karma catches up with you and "you get yours." Interview by C. Knowles / Written by: David Vandygriff When it comes to LGBT Entertainment we always think of the classics, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford and many of the ladies from yester-year but who in the present do the kids look up to now? Well one would say Brittany, Christina, Nicki but in the LGBT community there is only one person who opened their heart and try to be a person of grace, beauty and well let’s face it she was the first drag queen super model of the world … that’s right RuPaul! During the past two decades, RuPaul has made five albums, stared in movies / music videos such as “Love Shack” by The B-52’s and Wigstock: The Movie, presented at the MTV awards, co-hosted the BRIT Awards and recorded UK’s biggest hit “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John, had a talk show, touring promoting albums and books, signed a modeling contract with MAC Cosmetics making him the first drag queen supermodel. CXM: You are such a role model to so many people, what Ru-Mantra do you have to share with the current and next generations? We had a chance to talk with RuPaul this month about his life long career, Ru: It’s a little more than a mantra. When I was coming up I had gay mentors, politics and the upcoming ALL STARS … older gay men that taught me about gay culture, politics, and gain self esteem in a culture that tries to tell you that you should not have self-esteem... I think CXM: Drag Race started in 2009; did you ever imagine the show would have it’s more important today to teach the younger generations how to freedoms catapulted to the mainstream appeal not only in the LGBT Community but the that were so hard fought for. You know the consumer culture that is done by world itself? supporting the people that are out there by gay artist, gay publications, and Ru: It is so funny how time goes by so fast. Everything I do I’m motivated by gay politics. It is not just one sided, it is not just one gay agenda. It is all people things that make me laugh and that I think that are beautiful, fun and everythat really dance to the beat of a different drummer, that dance outside the thing. I learned early that those things are not what make everyone laughs. I box. We have to teach young people how to do that. In the Jewish culture it is assumed every would love beautiful colors and everything. tradition to teach the younger generations about the struggles and success. CXM: Each season, contestants submit a tape with hopes of being on the show, when reviewing them, is there ever that moment you feel like – wow this CXM: Besides yourself, who do you see as a gay mensch? Ru: (Laughs uncontrollable.) Well you know ugh Judge Judy (laughs)! I think person could win? there are so many lessons to be learned from that show like how to gain a Ru: Oh yeah when I saw Sharron. She was nothing like we had had before. I moral compass, how to conduct yourself with class and protocol. I’m not talking thought “WOW” this kid is a superstar. In her audition tapes she had the huabout some people’s law or some bullshit but a moral protocol. mor, reverence, compassion and love. CXM: Have every considered asking Judge Judy to be a guest judge? CXM: Everybody say love (laughs)! Ru: I think of it every single time but you know she aint’ thinking about no show Ru: Yeah! Really with every piece of art you have to have the polar opposites biz bullshit. She has got her thing and then a life. She doesn’t care about that simultaneously with everything. It’s there with everything. Sometimes people kind of stuff. try to unnerve the balance and that is when it becomes real. CXM: In the past 5 years, the show has given fans great entertainers, All Stars airs on Oct 22, was it difficult to come up with challenges knowing the girls so well? Ru: Ugh yes. You know these kids that are on All Stars have been through the mill before, so we really had to be inventive when it came to the challenges. Trust me (laughs), and I mean this we put them through the ringer and we succeeded (laughs).

CXM: She would be a hoot! Ru: A hoot yes. OMG I dream of it, I dream of it. At my age I really don’t have role models anymore but the ONLY person that I admire is Judge Judy.

CXM: Was that the high speed ringer or the manual process (laughs)? Ru: A little bit of the both. You know you have to keep them guess.

CXM: She would be a hoot! Ru: A hoot yes. OMG I dream of it, I dream of it. At my age I really don’t have role models anymore but the ONLY person that I admire is Judge Judy.

5

CXM: You know everyone loves the manual process! Ru: The manual process cost more (laughs)! CXM: Season 4 you opened the show to the fans to help you decide the winner and changed to a LIVE-esk show, have you ever thought of a live episode for the finale? Ru: I’ve got to tell that we here at World of Wonder we are gay people! (Laughs) So we always have a little bit of a trick up our sleeve. There should be a show on us in the producers room coming up with ideas because it is so much fun it real exemplifies why it is fun to be gay and to be free of constraints and how fun it is let your imagination run wild. And then see if it is doable on a television show. That is what we do every season. That is what we do in Season 5 actual in every season. Season 5 is OUTRAGEOUS and every season there is something that defines every season and that definitely has happened in Season 5 and even ALL STARS. But we have a great time and trust me the surprises are NEVER ending. CXM: Would you ever think of doing a live production show with the stars from the shows? Ru: Yes we have thought about doing a Christmas Special or even a live review in Vegas or a traveling show, but this is something we still might do.

CXM: Have every considered asking Judge Judy to be a guest judge? Ru: I think of it every single time but you know she aint’ thinking about no show biz bullshit. She has got her thing and then a life. She doesn’t care about that kind of stuff.

CXM: Earlier this year, pictures surfaced about you running for President, a Photoshop campaign if you will – how do you see the current campaign? And who would be your Secretary of Interiors? Ru: (Laughs) You know politics for me, the Washington politics pale, pastel, soap opera. It doesn’t interest me at ALL. In the 9th grade I won best dancer and afro. I was the best dancer and had the best afro but that was what got me the awards. It is some much more about positioning and favors and so little of it has to do with what Judge Judy would say, “moral compass.” CXM: When did you know that you had made it as a drag queen/entertainer? Ru: Well you know….. umm ….as an entertainer there were different stages of it. I would say it was when I was in San Diego with my mother on her death bed. We say together watching MTV News a piece about me, she looked over at me and said, “N-*-* you are C-R-A-Z-Y!!” (Ru laughs). She had predicted it many years before but that was her way saying well here it is. Ru: Thanks guys I had a great time talking to you! CXM: Thank you Ru! Ru: You guys are going to love the SHOW!

Written by: Dr. Jerry Rosenburg Thursday, October 11, 2012 is a day I will always remember as it is the day I achieved the number one item on my bucket list. I finally saw Barbra Streisand live in concert! Her “Back to Brooklyn” Concert, at the brand new Barclay Center, was the greatest concert I’ve ever experienced and far exceeded my expectations. The staging, the orchestra and the production were all first class, but nothing can outshine the brilliance of Barbra. From the moment she walked on stage, I was mesmerized by her “not from this world” talent. No one I’ve ever seen or heard comes close to the magnificence of her voice. We would have been there all night if she had performed all of her hits, but she included many including “People,” “He Touched Me,” “Evergreen,” and a heartfelt tribute to Marvin Hamlisch during her performance of “The Way We Were.” One of the most moving parts of the show was her duet with her son, Jason Gould. It wasn’t until Barbra’s recent 70th birthday — when Jason made a “Happy Birthday’” video, — that Barbra knew he could "really" sing. This was his first live singing performance and his father, Elliott Gould was in the audience watching the duet. Barbra incorporated her hometown into the concert by showing interviews with Brooklyn residents in which all attested that Barbra was indeed the most famous, the most legendary, and the most asked-about of any Erasmus high school graduate. That she was special. That she wore weird clothes. And what a voice! Another highlight included the “Ask Barbra” segment, where she told the

audience that she preferred smooth “natural” peanut butter over chunky, that she remembered one of her fellow campers from summer camp, and that she hoped “No one would tell Romney how to get to Sesame Street or to Pennsylvania Avenue!” Sting, Barbara Walters, Michael Douglas, Lorne Michaels, Ralph Lauren, Rosie O'Donnell, Regis Phibin, Gerard Butler, Woody Allen, Mayor Bloomberg, and Donna Karan were among the star-studded audience. The show closed with "Happy Days Are Here Again", and that song personified how I felt as I was standing and clapping with tears in my eyes. It may have been my first Barbra Streisand concert; however, I hope it won't be my last. We can only hope for a Jason Gould tour in the near future...

SOUTH FLORIDA

ORLANDO: Let's face it, Walt Disney put Orlando on the map. Most everyone has made the trek to Disney at one point in their lives, and admit, you've done it too. Today Orlando has much more to offer than Disney with a zillion theme park choices, a growing live music scene, and yes, a fun gay bar and club scene too. So if you haven't been in a while (and if Gay Days at Disney hasn't already tempted you), make the trip, you'll love it. Parliament House is a huge all gay bar, club and hotel complex with shows. Billed as the largest "gayest place on earth," a compliment in our book, it includes dance floor/videos/male dancers and drag shows. Parliament House is also a hotel, live theatre, pool lounge, lakeside beach and billiards bar. Check out fabu Camp Drag. Go enjoy yourself, boys! The Center (Orlando’s LGBT Community Center) is pleased to present the debut of the party certain to become a much-anticipated annual event designed to celebrate diversity within our Central Florida Rainbow Community. The BLACK and WHITE GALA is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy an upscale soirée’ reminiscent of a prom, or country club dance, but without the hundred dollar-plus price tag, or an off-putting dress code. The organizers of the Gala have planned an elegant but decidedly non-stuffy affair with many special touches to make the evening memorable. Now all that is needed to complete the party is YOU! Visit thecenterorlando.org for more information. ST PETE: With an average of some 360 days of sunshine each year, St. Petersburg is nicknamed "The Sunshine City." The remarkable weather combined with shopping and fine dining makes the city a popular tourist destination all year long. One of the best aspects of area is the diversity of its neighborhoods. The Grand Central District is quickly becoming a predominately gay and gay friendly business district that has many galleries, antique stores, unique retail stores and an assortment of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. St. Petersburg is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine. The most gay-popular beach in greater St. Petersburg, known by most locals at Sunset Beach, is located at the southern tip of Treasure Island, one

of a string of barrier islands that extends along the Gulf of Mexico to the west of St. Petersburg. TAMPA BAY: The Tampa Bay area is Florida's largest metro area with Tampa itself, St. Petersburg and the nearby gulf beach towns. Tampa itself has a thriving nightlife scene in the old town area "Ybor City", but alas, the gay scene is more spread out. You'll find gay bars throughout Tampa and St. Petersburg. Tampa is also an easy drive to great beaches and is only an hour from Orlando. Tampa Bay Leather & Fetish Pride will be held Friday, November 9, 2012. The second year and growing! Tampa Bay Leather Sir & Leather Boy Contest 2013 as well as Puppy Contest. The charities benefiting will be Corbin House, Francis House, ASAP, and Mr. Friendly. Updates available at www.tampabayleathernfetishpride.com. India Menzel and David A. will performing at the Straz Center Saturday, December 1, 2012. Written by: Joey Amato When a city boasts a neighborhood appropriately named “Boystown”, you know you are in for a treat. Although it’s the 3rd largest city in the country in terms of population, Chicago seems vastly different from Los Angeles and New York. Maybe it’s the Midwestern mentality that generates passion and hospitality amongst the locals. Or quite possibly its picturesque border along Lake Michigan is what makes the Windy City a truly magical place. Getting around Chicago is simple. Guests arriving at either O’Hare or Midway airports can board a train to downtown making transportation virtually painless and inexpensive. Once downtown, visitors can stay at any one of dozens of large hotels or opt for smaller boutiques. I chose to stay at the spectacular Radisson Blu. The first of its kind in the United States, Radisson Blu, part of Aqua Tower, is a chic, 86-story towering oasis designed by Jeanne Gang near the border of Lake Michigan, which features luxurious guest rooms, state-of-the-art fitness center, conference space and Felini, an Italian-inspired restaurant and bar which was bustling with patrons almost every time I passed by. The hotel is located a short 10-minute taxi ride from Boystown, the heart of the LGBT community. This fall, the Art Institute of Chicago will present a tribute to Jeanne Gang, the developer of Radisson Blu and Aqua Tower. The exhibition tiled, Building: Inside Studio Gang Architects will be on display from September 24 until February 24, 2013 in the museum’s Architecture and Design Galleries.

Food is served in the attached cafe next door and the outdoor patio gets packed in the summer. Check out the wet underwear contest the last Thursday of each month hosted by drag diva Frida Lay. If partying isn’t your glass of vodka, catch a Cub’s game at Wrigley Field or during football season, head to Soldier Field and watch the Bears take on one of their NFC rivals for an experience not to be missed.

For traditional American fare, visit Halsted’s Bar & Grill where diners can choose from a large selection of starters and entrees including the restaurant’s famous selection of burgers. Some of my favorites included the Brie Mushroom Burger and Halsted’s Homemade Shrimp Burger made with fresh shrimp mixed with peppers, onions and topped with an avocado and herb aioli. Boystown comes alive at sundown, where the streets are filled with revelers until the wee hours of the morning. There are almost too many gay bars to visit on one trip, but bar hopping is encouraged so you can feel the vibe of this wonderful destination. Start off at Sidetrack, the largest bar in the city, which features a great rooftop beer garden, and seven large rooms catering to nearly every musical taste and style. Just a few doors down is Minibar Ultra Lounge, one of my favorite destinations in the city. The cozy space is perfect for an evening cocktail with friends or a great opportunity to meet the locals in an intimate setting. The bartenders here as

Catch a movie on Chicago's largest movie screen at the IMAX Theater. Or take a dynamic high-speed motion thrill ride to Antarctica on the Transporter FX. Navy Pier is always a great place to spend the afternoon if this is your first time visiting the city. Just a brisk walk from the hotel is Millennium Park, located in the heart of downtown Chicago. The park is an award-winning center for art, music, architecture and landscape design. The result of a unique partnership between the City of Chicago and the philanthropic community, the 24.5-acre park features the work of world-renowned architects, planners, artists and designers. Among Millennium Park’s prominent features are the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind as well as the interactive Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa and what locals refer to as “the bean.” While in Chicago, don’t forget to pick up a copy of GRAB Magazine or the Windy City Times for local LGBT news and events. Plan to stay a minimum of five days to truly experience all of the wonderful sites and attractions Chicago has to offer. OUT Destinations is part of OUTreach Public Relations, a company specializing in LGBT marketing. Founded by Joey Amato in 2012, OUTreach PR has quickly become one of the most sought after companies for celebrities, corporations and non-profit organizations looking to target the ever growing and affluent LGBT consumer.
