MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER
MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER McLaren has revealed the new Artura Spider, its first-ever convertible with a high-performance hybrid powertrain and the second Artura model.
10
www.motorsireland.ie
T
he new Spider is introduced with significant upgrades to power, performance and driver engagement, which combine with the sensory pleasures of open-top driving to add a remarkable new dimension to the Artura. Further elevating the Artura’s next-generation supercar performance, the enhancements engineered for the Spider have also been incorporated into the Artura coupe, with a new model introduced simultaneously. Both the new Spider and new coupe deliver the highest levels of dynamic performance – up to and including outstanding circuit ability – as well as meeting the requirements of regular driving and offering the near-silent electric-drive so beneficial in urban environments. The new Artura Spider was designed and developed to ambitious targets across the board, with particular focus on driver engagement, performance, agility, refinement, efficiency and quality. The additional attraction of a retractable hardtop that operates electrically in just 11 seconds to provide a full convertible experience, ensures intoxicating supercar exhilaration. The new Artura Spider and new Artura coupe – which are both designated 2025 model year are available to order now, with first deliveries from mid-year depending on region. “The new Artura is absolutely the complete next-generation supercar, whichever model you choose. We have upgraded the powertrain and the chassis systems to deliver more power, more dynamic performance and even higher levels of connection with the driver – without any compromise in everyday driving. And now alongside the new Artura coupe we have the Artura Spider, a new convertible that has all of these improvements and brings another dimension of open-air McLaren supercar exhilaration to our range.” Michael Leiters, CEO, McLaren Automotive McLaren’s relentless focus on its super-lightweight engineering philosophy is key to delivering the advantages that enable delivery of the exceptional dynamic characteristics and performance – with driver engagement to match – demanded of any its cars. The new Artura Spider has a dry lightest weight of just 1,457kg, with kerbweight (DIN) of only 1,560kg - just 62kg more than the Artura coupe. These figures position the new Spider as easily the lightest among convertible competition, enjoying an advantage of up to 83kg.
11
MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER
More importantly, in combination with the 700PS of the high-performance hybrid powertrain, this gives a powerto-weight ratio of 480PS/tonne at lightest dry weight, which perfectly positions the Artura Spider to optimise every aspect of supercar high-performance, including exploiting its mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive chassis layout to the full. The McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) at the heart of the Artura provides a secure platform with no loss of rigidity when the fixed roof is removed – the majority of the 62kg difference between Spider and coupe is accounted for by the electrically-operated Retractable Hard Top (RHT) mechanism. Beyond the core carbon fibre monocoque, MCLA incorporates aluminium impact structures and a rear structure that houses the hybrid powertrain. An innovative ethernet electrical architecture is also part of MCLA, reducing cabling by 25% and with that proportional weight. The electrical architecture was optimised in the development process for the new Spider to increase data capacity and transfer speeds. McLaren’s high-performance hybrid powertrain has been recalibrated, with an additional 20PS from the V6 combustion engine* on the MY25 Artura, increasing overall power to 700PS. The additional power is focused from 4,000rpm to the redline at 8,500rpm, providing a marked
12
www.motorsireland.ie
‘crescendo’ in performance. Peak torque value remains at a muscular 720Nm, its delivery optimised by minor changes to electronic mapping. This engine recalibration will also be made available free-of-charge to existing Artura owners** via their McLaren Retailer. The 3.0-litre M630 dry-sump aluminium petrol engine, which now achieves in excess of 200PS per litre, is extremely compact and lightweight – at just 160kg it weighs 50kg less than a McLaren V8 and is significantly shorter, enhancing packaging efficiency. The dimensions are made possible by a 120-degree V angle design that also aids a low centre of gravity. The engine design reduces pressure losses through the exhaust system as well as allowing for a stiffer crankshaft and in turn a rev limit of 8,500rpm. The free-revving nature of the V6 engine is supported by the twin-turbochargers being located within the ‘hot vee’, positioning that enables them to spin more rapidly, improving throttle response. The soundtrack of the engine has also been enhanced, with a revised valved exhaust system incorporating a tuned resonator and upward conical shape to the tailpipes to further refine the engine note at the middle and higher points of the rev range. This provides a ‘cleaner’ sound that envelops the occupants. An optional sports exhaust system is available, offering an enhanced, clearer tone overall and even greater driver engagement through an exhaust symposer that channels authentic sound waves from the tailpipe into the cabin.
The response and power of the Artura’s V6 is complemented by an extremely compact axial flux E-motor. Located within the transmission bell housing, it generates 95PS and 225Nm and boasts a power density per kilogramme 33% greater than the system used in the iconic McLaren P1™ hypercar. The E-motor is powered by a battery pack comprising five lithium-ion modules, offering a usable energy capacity of 7.4kWh and an increased EV range of 33km (21miles). The battery is refrigerant cooled using cooling rails, and the assembly – including a power distribution unit which transfers battery power from the rear of the vehicle to the ancillaries in the front – is mounted on a structural carbon fibre floor. This assembly is then bolted onto the rear base of the monocoque, optimising stiffness, weight distribution and crash protection. Overall, the Artura’s compact hybrid componentry – including the 88kg battery pack and 15.4kg E-motor - adds just 130kg to overall weight, an achievement that is instrumental in the new Spider achieving its best-in-class weight figures. The instant torque delivery provided by the E-motor and the 605PS of the twin-turbocharged V6 engine give the Artura razor-sharp throttle response and acceleration across the board, whether in-gear or through the gears. The Artura Spider’s official figures of 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 3.0 seconds, 0-200km/h (0-124mph) in 8.4 seconds and 0-300km/h (0-186mph) in 21.6 seconds highlight the levels of supercar performance available, all the way up to a maximum speed limited to 330km/h (205mph). A Launch Control system for optimised performance on track is standard, as is a new ‘Spinning Wheel Pull-Away’ feature. Activated by disengaging Electronic Stability Control by pressing the ESC button on the driver binnacle, this allows dramatic wheelspin when accelerating from standstill with a large throttle load. New powertrain mounts developed for the MY25 Artura bring clear benefits to dynamic characteristics. The new mounts are tuned to improve control of the powertrain within the chassis. This limits powertrain movement, especially when under load and in turn improves stability, steering feel and overall vehicle agility, delivering a more precise – and more involving – drive. In addition to the dynamic benefits provided by new engine mounts, the increase in stiffness means the driver is more aware of the powertrain itself as being integral to the overall engagement they experience, adding greater theatre and emotion throughout. The Artura’s rear suspension pairs a top upper wishbone with two lower links and a tie rod in front of the wheel centre, to maximise vehicle stability and precision and reduces understeer out of a corner while accelerating. The rear suspension concept combines with a bespoke version of
McLaren’s Proactive Damping Control system – supplied by Official Intelligent Suspension Partner, Monroe – that further supports exceptional ride and handling characteristics. Ride and handling is revised for the MY25 Artura with revised damper valving offering greater responsiveness. Performance of the Domain Control Units (DCU) in the ethernet architecture has also been enhanced, supporting damping and handling response rates and increasing them by up to 90%, which improves reaction to driver input and changes in the road surface. There are three dynamic handling modes, each activating increased levels of body control through damper adjustment. ‘Comfort’ is the default mode, with Sport and Track offering more supportive settings. The required mode is selected using one of the two rocker controls on the top of the instrument binnacle. The degree of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) intervention can also be adjusted, to suit driver preference and weather and road conditions. Operated by a button in the handling mode control, the selectable settings are fully on; ESC DYN, which allows more freedom and also gives the option to activate Variable Drift Control; or OFF, which removes electronic intervention. Dynamic precision is additionally enhanced by Pirelli CyberTMTyre technology. Comprising hardware and software integrated with the Artura’s electronic systems and featuring an electronic sensor inside each tyre, Pirelli CyberTMTyre generates real-time data that allows drivers to adjust tyre pressure limits, fully exploiting the potential of the fitted tyres. Pirelli’s Noise Cancelling System (PNCS), which uses a sound absorbing device on the inside of the tyre wall to reduce vibration and noise, also features. The P ZERO™ tyre fitted as standard features an asymmetric tread pattern that improves braking and enhances handling and control across a wide range of road conditions, with particular focus on wet weather performance. The optional P ZERO™ CORSA tyre is designed for use on both road and track and features racing-type compounds and unique tread patterns, achieving higher grip levels as well as improved braking and traction. A P ZERO™ WINTER tyre is also available. Braking performance is also exceptional. The MY25 Artura utilises carbon ceramic discs, enhanced lightweight aluminium calipers and new brake cooling ducts. The braking system works in combination with rear-axle kinematics and revised engine and vehicle damping response rates to deliver even better high-speed braking power and stability, also extending disc and pad life in track driving conditions. With revised ABS calibration, braking distances for the Spider and new coupe are 31m to standstill from 100kmh (62mph) and an improved 124m from 200km/h (124mph). The advanced eight-speed transmission designed specifically for the Artura’s high-performance hybrid powertrain
13
MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER
integrates the E-motor yet is still very compact; despite having an extra gear over the seven-speed transmission on McLaren’s V8-powered vehicles, the length of the gear cluster has been reduced by 40mm, helped by use of a nested clutch rather than a parallel clutch. Gearbox calibration has been revised for the MY25 Artura. The eight-gear close-ratio gearbox now has a new pre-fill feature that provides even faster gearchanges, with shift speeds increased by 25%. This is made possible by pressurising the hydraulic fluid in the gearbox to the threshold required to enact a shift (the ‘kiss point’), so that when the driver selects a gear (or an automatic shift is requested), shift time is minimised. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a lightweight and compact electronically controlled differential (E-diff). Located within the transmission, the E-diff delivers variable differential preload to optimise stability and agility. The Artura has four powertrain drive modes: Comfort, Sport and Track, plus the electric only, emissions-free E-mode. Comfort mode combines electric and hybrid drive for extended stop and start driving with the combustion engine shut off at low speeds and redeployed when speeds or acceleration inputs demand. Sport and Track modes use the electric motor in an increasingly aggressive manner for lowend response and acceleration (‘torque infill’) and incorporate sharper gearshift strategies. Track mode delivers the highest high-voltage battery recharge rate. E-mode – which is the default ‘start’ mode – has been refined to provide greater emissions-free driving range. The process of switching from Electric to Comfort, Sport or Track drive modes has been improved on MY25 Arturas. The engine conditioning process that reduces vehicle emissions by warming the catalytic converter before engaging drive to the combustion engine, has been recalibrated for driver convenience and is now up to 90% faster *** when first selected on startup. The visual design and architecture of the new Spider make it immediately recognisable as an Artura, despite the integration of the Retractable Hard Top (RHT) and the changes this brings. The ‘shrink-wrapped’, sculpted bodywork; signature ‘hammerhe14
www.motorsireland.ie
ad’ nose; integrated front fender louvres; and headlight air intakes are all familiar yet still striking – as too are the dihedral doors that open close to the body to allow easy access and egress in tight parking spaces. But as a convertible, the new Spider is unquestionably a supercar with a visual identity all of its own, and the requirements of the RHT system are central to this. All-new buttresses – which incorporate the rollover structure – include a glazed section to aid rear visibility that also doubles as a channel for airflow into the engine bay area. A heated rear screen, which raises or lowers at the touch of a button either to optimise comfort with the roof lowered or to allow exhaust sound into the cabin for additional driver engagement when it is raised, is located between the buttresses. Powertrain cooling vents, including the ‘hot vee’ chimney, are situated further to the rear of the car compared to the coupe, in order to accommodate the RHT mechanism and tonneau cover. Raising and then relocating when the roof is operated either up or down, the tonneau cover has a lightweight carbon composite structure and can be finished at extra cost in gloss carbon fibre if desired. The Retractable Hard Top itself is a carbon fibre and composite panel but can also be configured with an Electrochromic glass panel, which can either brighten the cabin - or block more than 99% of sunlight - at the touch of a button. McLaren has adopted advanced Suspended Particle (SPD) technology for this feature on the Artura Spider, to further reduce heat transfer into the cabin when in the darkest mode – more than 96% of solar energy is blocked - helping to keep air temperature as cool as possible. The RHT system is actuated in near silence by eight electric motors. Two motors fold the roof panel, two raise and lower the rear tonneau cover, and two control the aerodynamic covers on the leading edge of the tonneau buttresses. A further motor is responsible for rear window operation, another for the RHT latching mechanism. The roof is operated by an overhead control inside the cabin or from the vehicle key when the car is stationary, allowing it to be opened or closed from outside the vehicle. The new Artura Spider debuts a new aerothermal cooling system to cool the powertrain, that also enables the packa-
ging of the RHT and reduces air-buffeting for Spider occupants. The new aerothermal concept features four separate ducting systems and is distinguished from the coupe by the two rear deck inlets situated on the outer sections of the one-piece Aluminium Hot-Formed upper rear bodywork. These contain both cooling inlets for the powertrain and RHT storage area as well an outlet for hot air. Between these is the powertrain chimney as well as the inlets and outlets for airflow management. The Artura Spider’s buttresses - glazed in motorsport-style polycarbonate - are visibly more sculpted than the coupe’s since they also channel cold air into discreet ducts in the tonneau cover. Additionally, the roof shape has been designed to channel air towards the repositioned chimney to accelerate the flow of hot air from the powertrain. Even the windscreen surround has been revised and now incorporates small gurneys finely sculpted to reduce buffeting in the cabin when the roof is retracted – a lightweight aerodynamic solution that epitomises the level of detail that has been incorporated into the Artura Spider. The cabin of the new Artura Spider – trimmed in performance or luxury materials according to the driver’s preference – retains the purposeful, driver-focused design of the coupe. The ‘clean’ steering wheel is free of buttons and controls, aside from the sculpted gearshift paddles which move with 15
MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER
the wheel for optimal driver ergonomics. The driver display binnacle, which moves with the column when adjusted for reach or rake to ensure all driving information is always within the driver’s eyeline, also houses the controls to select Handling and Powertrain modes, allowing changes – including an easy switch between electric and hybrid drive – without taking hands off the steering wheel. The screen display of the binnacle focuses on key information to minimise driver distraction, and further has a stealth mode that hides non-essential content, reducing distractions and promoting full concentration on the road ahead. The innovative McLaren Clubsport seat is fitted as standard in most markets. Adjusting through an elliptical arc to combine the range of motion expected of a moveable backrest with the light weight and close support of a bucket seat, the Clubsport seat is equally at home on road or track. Adjustable lumbar support can be specified as an additional feature. Drivers wanting a more traditional but still appropriately sporting seat can option the electrically adjustable, heated comfort seats with memory. The Artura’s McLaren infotainment and connectivity sy16
www.motorsireland.ie
stem (MIS II) uses two high-definition screens. Delivering smartphone levels of responsiveness, MIS II is capable of smartphone mirroring and the Artura now offers wireless charging as an option, for use with enabled mobile devices and incorporates a unique, soft-faced retainer that supports the phone in a vertical upright position. Familiar McLaren apps - including Variable Drift Control – also feature on MIS II. MIS II also enables a number of ADAS driver assistance features with Lane Departure Warning – which retains user-preference until manually reactivated via a fascia-mounted switch - and Road Sign Recognition now fitted to all Arturas. Also available optionally are Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Switchable Follow Mode, Auto High-Beam Assist, Blindspot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Detection. The Artura also features a Bluetooth low-energy vehicle key which detects when the driver is heading towards the vehicle and powers up systems to welcome occupants. This greeting includes ambient, ‘hidden-until-lit’ lighting in the doors, also acting as puddle lamps.
A revised range of options and options packs are introduced with the MY25 Artura, including exterior and interior carbon fibre components and a new, faster vehicle lift. Silver badging is now a no-cost option, with new Stealth badging – which incorporates black badges front and rear as well as a black McLaren Speedmark on the wheel centre caps – standard fit. A five-speaker McLaren Audio System is standard fit. Customers can choose to specify the Artura’s acclaimed Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker surround sound audio system, which is exclusively available with the Technology Pack. This system features Bowers & Wilkins’ Continuum™ midrange speakers to ensure precise reproduction of voices and instruments throughout the cabin, complemented by Nautilus™ Aluminium Double Dome tweeters to provide greater clarity at high frequencies. The Artura Spider additionally features an additional rear centre speaker to optimise the cabin’s convertible-specific acoustic requirements. The MY25 Artura has a new 15-spoke wheel as standard, in silver finish. A new gold-coloured Orum wheel finish is
available on both Dynamo and Star wheel designs, with the latter now available in a full range of finishes. The Calibre 10-Spoke Super-Lightweight wheel joins the list of optional wheels, and is available finished in Silver, Dark Stealth or Gloss Black. All wheels can be optionally specified with Titanium Wheel Bolts, saving approximately 0.4kg of unsprung mass – indicative of the level of attention given to delivering weight reduction. The Artura Spider is priced in its home UK market from £221,500 for the standard specification. There are three further interior specifications, each available for an additional £5,050: Performance, which has a more sporting aesthetic; TechLux, where the focus is on the technical luxury that the name suggests; and Vision, which displays a more avant-garde and adventurous look and feel. An extended palette of exterior paints, some of which are available on the Artura for the first time, is introduced for the new Spider; twenty Elite colours are offered in addition to the standard five colours, with a further eighteen MSO colours also available.

With the recently-introduced BYD DOLPHIN and the BYD ATTO 3 – winner of the Continental Irish Small/Compact SUV 2024 award – the BYD SEAL is a model that its Irish distributor believes will ‘boost the awareness of BYD, help in attracting new dealers, and consolidate BYD’s growing reputation in Ireland as ‘the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of ’. Here the model line-up will consist of two powertrain variants – ‘Design’ and an all-wheel drive ‘Excellence’ offering two trim levels, six body colours, two interior
trim colours and several technological ‘firsts’ that Motor Distributors Limited says: ‘sets SEAL apart’. Given its outstanding range of equipment and generous dimensions, with space for five occupants, SEAL launches at what is said to be ‘an attractively-competitive price’, beginning at €44,036 for the Design model and from €49,836 for the Excellence model (after State subsidies). Like its predecessors, the BYD SEAL will be powered by BYD’s own, in-house developed 82.5 kWh Blade Battery with power outputs from 230 kW (Design) to 390 kW (Excellence) with a range (WLTP combined) of 570 kms (Design) and 520 kms (Excellence) and 0-100 km/h speeds of 5.9 seconds and 3.8 seconds respectively. Other key Blade Battery features include a 30% to 80% fast charging time of 26 minutes, when charged at a 150 kW DC charging point. Due also to its unique ‘sandwich’ design which, amongst other attributes, is safer and helps deliver added handling rigidity and more interior space, it has the environmental benefit of being 100% cobalt free.

MASERATI GRANCABRIO FOLGORE
aserati has a new convertible, and it’s one of the few electric drop-tops on the market. Known as the GranCabrio Folgore, it’s the open-air alternative to the existing GranTurismo Folgore, with which it shares a drivetrain and most everything else.
The basics are exciting. The drivetrain features three radial-flux permanent-magnet motors, each with its own silicon carbide inverter. Two are at the rear and one is at the front. Each can support up to 300 kilowatts of power, which means a theoretical peak output of 900kW (1,207 horsepower). Unfortunately, the battery cannot provide this amount of power, not even in a short burst. Maserati claims a peak output of 818 hp (610kW) in “MaxBoost” mode. In standard operation, 751 hp is available.
20
www.motorsireland.ie
The battery is a T-shaped lithium-ion pack, located between and behind the passengers. This enables the GranCabrio’s classic proportions, which would’ve likely been spoiled by a thick floor-mounted battery. Under regenerative braking, the pack can absorb an impressive 400kW for a short time. In terms of continuous charging, it can take 270kW from a capable station to recoup 20 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Interestingly, Maserati seems to doubt the availability of charging stations that can support the car’s 800-volt architecture. As such, it has an onboard “DC Booster,” which sounds like a DC-DC converter capable of turning lower voltage from an older station into the 800-plus volts necessary to charge the Folgore’s pack. If this system is utilised, it can charge at 50kW. The exact cost of the car, as well as when it will arrive at dealers, has yet to be announced.

ID. BUZZ GTX
I
rish ID. Buzz fans won’t have long to wait for the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX. With order books set to open this summer, first models will start to appear on our roads in Q4 of 2024. The ID. Buzz has already won a special place in Irish automotive history by becoming the first vehicle to win Irish Car of the Year AND Irish Van of the Year in the same year. Paul Hunt, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, is hopeful the new GTX model will be equally well received. He says: “Having a sporty ID. Buzz with the choice of five-, six- or seven-seats is a game changer. The initial five-seat ID. Buzz achieved so much in a short space of time and is still turning heads to this day. The addition of a long-wheelbase option with a larger battery opens the ID. Buzz up to a whole, new audience. Irish car buyers have already taken the ID. Buzz to their hearts. However, a sporty ID. Buzz GTX with state-of-theart technology, practicality and added towing capacity will win over a whole new legion of admirers.” The new ID. Buzz GTX is equipped with two electric drive motors. An 80 kW motor drives the front axle, while a 210 kW motor powers the rear axle – together they form the all-wheel drive. The top speed of the GTX models is electronically limited to 160 km/h. The electric drive motors in the ID. Buzz GTX are

supplied with energy by means of a 79 kWh or 86 kWh battery. The 79 kWh battery can be charged at DC fast-charging stations with up to 185 kW3. At maximum charging capacity, it is charged from 10 to 80 per cent again in approx. 26 minutes; the 86-kWh battery absorbs energy with up to 200 kW3 at DC fast-charging stations. It is also charged from 10 to 80 per cent in about 26 minutes at maximum charging capacity. The ID. Buzz GTX is characterised by an individualised front end. A bumper in GTX styling with a black air intake grille in honeycomb design and new side air guide elements also ensure a dynamic, distinctive appearance. New daytime running lights are integrated into the bumper on the left and right. All black body elements such as the new air intake grille, air guide elements, GTX lettering and the exterior mirror housings are finished in high-gloss black. In addition, the Solna 20-inch alloy wheel is standard equipment for the ID. Buzz GTX. The range of GTX wheel rims is supplemented by two new 21-inch alloy wheels4. Always fitted as standard are IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. A new paint finish in the colour Cherry Red is offered exclusively for the ID. Buzz GTX. This red will be configurable as a solid paint finish and optionally in combination with Mono Silver metallic as a two-tone paint finish. Pricing is yet to be announced.

T
KIA EV9
he Kia EV9 is big in every sense, 5.1m long, almost 2m wide and 1.8m tall. It makes the firm’s other SUV, the Sorento, seem small. Kia’s styling takes a bold new leap with the EV9, there’s nothing quite like this on the road at present. So if presence is what you are after, this delivers just that. With a muscular body and impressive stance, the EV9 really brings the wow-factor. It’s rugged yet sophisticated, with clean-cut and smooth lines, bringing plenty of detail and style. The ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’ at the front coupled with the EV9’s ‘Digital Tiger Face’ gives a futuristic feel. The Digital Tiger Face is made up of small cube lamps with corresponding bodywork to give a new and modern lighting pattern, which will be featured on future Kia EV models. On the inside the cabin has a premium feel to it, the plastics top notch, and most with ‘eco’ credentials. There is the usual twin touchscreen set up. Buttons have been kept to a minimum with a few to quickly adjust the ventilation and audio volume, and some more on the wheel for the usual stuff. The rest is in the touchscreen area, which is all rather straightforward in that home screen and sub-menu manner. The dashboard design is quite minimalist with a lot of space and storage integrated into the design. There are handy charging points for mobiles throughout the cabin, including in the third row, so even the passengers at the very rear of the vehicle won’t miss out on all the fun tech the EV9 has to offer. The EV9 is the company’s first three-row electric flagship SUV. The spacious, and striking EV9 is a rugged, sophisticated, and technologically advanced electric vehicle. Available as a six or seven-seater, it combines bold styling, premium versatility, multifaceted connectivity, and Kia’s signature ‘Opposites United’ design to deliver a vehicle that’s ready for anything, with a projected driving range of up to 563 kilometres*.
tor of Kia Ireland. “There has always been a demand from families in Ireland for 6 and 7 seater vehicles, and if these families seek to change to electric, the EV9 is an attractive proposition for them. In recent years Kia has proved itself a prime mover in the road to electrification and the EV9 further proves our determination in this regard.”
The entry level model for the Irish market is the generously equipped 7-seater ‘Earth’ model. Standard equipment includes 19” alloy wheels, Triple Panoramic Display, Heated Front and Second Row Seats, Ventilated Driver and Passenger Seats, Head Up Display, 360 degree Surround View Monitor and Premium Meridian Sound system. Standard safety equipment includes Blind-spot Collision Avoidance with Blind Spot View Monitors, LED headlamps with wide projections and high beam assist and Highway Driving Assist 3. The Earth model comes on the market at €77,500.
Electrification has revolutionised the large SUV space, with the Kia EV9 feeling faster, more responsive and more enjoyable to drive than you might expect from such a big vehicle. The RWD model has a lighter-feel when driving it – which might offer less power, but definitely doesn’t feel sluggish when you plant your right foot. The entry EV9 feels agile on its feet, despite its weight (2310kg), and even acquits itself admirably in tight bends, with little in the way of body role, plenty of grip and responsive steering. The AWD version has great poise and grip but feels significantly faster.
The AWD 384PS GT-line model at €85,500 offers a choice of 6 and 7 seats. Additional spec for this trim level includes GT-line styling, 21” alloy wheels, Dual Sunroofs, Intelligent Adaptive Front Headlights and Remote Smart Parking Assist 2. The 6-seater version adds extra comfort for the second-row passengers and these two seats can be swivelled around to face the two rear seats when the vehicle is stationary.
Also really impressive is the cabin insulation, with the interior serene even at motorway speeds, while the ride itself feels well-suited to Irish roads. I think the eagerness of the acceleration will take some new EV owners by surprise, with the EV9 demanding gentle inputs to keep the speed from rocketing skywards, especially in the dual-motor variant.
“The EV9 sets new standards for the segment while completely redefining it,” said Ronan Flood, Managing Direc30

its speed-sign based, that means pinging every time you pass through a town centre, for example, even if its midnight with nobody about. You can turn it off, but you’ll need to do it every time you turn the car on. But on the whole, this is a seriously impressive all-electric family SUV, and there’s very little to fault here. Sure, the EV9 isn’t cheap. But it is exceptional in terms of the value it offers.
Conclusion
Bigger, bolder and more premium than any Kia before it, there’s little doubting the EV9 was a risk for the Korean brand. But on first impressions, it appears a well-calculated one, and one that proves electric family friendly electric motoring has well and truly arrived.

JEEP AVENGER
eep is a distinctive brand that has its origins in the 1940s when the US Army required a highly specific vehicle known as the quarter-ton, 4×4 command reconnaissance truck commonly known as the Willys Jeep. In today’s world, we could certainly benefit from embracing such a determined and can-do attitude. The Avenger follows a design approach offering a modern interpretation of Jeep design in a compact package. The front of the vehicle displays the iconic 7-slot grille, an authentic Jeep brand signature which has evolved from a vertical to a more horizontal pattern for functional efficiency. The bent-over grille is positioned in front of the headlamps to protect them in case of impact. The bulging fenders, another classic Jeep design element, offer a sense of strength and robustness while communicating a solid and imposing presence on and off-road. The side view is marked by the classic trapezoidal wheel arches, designed to optimise wheel travel for maximum articulation, according to Jeep. The vehicle features 18-inch wheels with a diamond cut finish. At the rear, the vehicle features signature-lights inspired by the classic X fuel cans. This “X” is a recurring theme inside and outside via the “X-Camo”, a pattern which combines the concept of “camouflage” with the letter “X”. In a nod to the first Jeep vehicles, the seven-slot grille, boxy shape, and rear lights styled to resemble a fuel can, all remain. The high ground clearance affords good visibility from the cockpit, yet Jeep the drive is comfortable and there is little body roll, making it feel planted on the road. Avenger features 10.25-inch infotainment display offering “I-phone-like” experience. It comes with Select Terrain and Hill Descent Control for all-road, all-weather driving. In addition, it also integrates new-generation safety systems such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Keep Assist. Longitude trim embodies the cool side of capability, offering more style and more convenience with 16inch alloy wheels, and rear parking sensor. Altitude trim is delivering more technology and exclusiveness, with Premium seats matching the dedicated silver dashboard and interior accents, 10.25-inch digital cluster and hands-free power liftgate. Summit trim, the top-of-the-range - features are the same: full LED headlights and taillights, multi-coloured ambient light, level 2 auto-

All colours – except for the Volcano - can be combined with a black roof. Available from launch in three trims, the entry-level, Longitude, competitively priced at €35,995 comes complete with a wide array of features as standard. The mid-level, Altitude, priced at €39,495 embodies a greater sense of technology and exclusivity. It includes premium seats that perfectly complement the dedicated silver dashboard and interior accents, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, and a handsfree power tailgate. The top-of-the-range Summit, priced at €42,495 serves as the ultimate representation of freedom. It signifies the pinnacle of excellence offering full LED headlights and taillights, advanced level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, 360-degree parking sensors as well as a rear camera with an aerial drone view. John Saunders, Managing Director of Jeep in Ireland, announcing the exciting arrival of the all-new fully electric Jeep Avenger commented: “Jeep Avenger delivers not only sustainable transportation but advanced technology that prioritises safety whilst maintaining an exciting driving experience for those who seek adventure around every

corner. With Avenger’s cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly design, this vehicle is set to revolutionise the way we think about electric cars. The Jeep Avenger boasts an impressive range, allowing you to go the distance without worrying about recharging. Its sleek and stylish exterior is matched by a luxurious interior, complete with all the latest features and comforts. Whether you’re exploring the city or venturing off-road, the Jeep Avenger provides a smooth and exhilarating ride. We would encourage customers to visit their local Jeep dealer to experience the future of driving with the Jeep Avenger.” Designed with functionality in mind, the Jeep Avenger sets new standards for comfort and convenience in urban commuting or off-road exploration adventures. Its innovative shock-resistant design safeguards the lights and skid plates, making it a reliable companion for both city driving and off-roading. Whilst compact on the outside, the Avenger offers an incredibly roomy interior with ample space for both people and cargo. With a generous central storage tunnel boasting an impressive interior storage capacity of 34 litres - equivalent to that of a carry-on bag - everything can be neatly organised to meet all storage needs on long or short journeys. It is quite minimalist in its design but there are shortcut buttons under the touchscreen to adjust the fan speed and temperature, for example. It’s a cool interior and feels very modern.

The Avenger offers an eco-friendly powertrain that combines zero emissions with a sense of adventure and excitement. It has an electric range of up to 400km WLTP and up to 550km in urban settings. Charging is made simple too, Avenger’s recharging capabilities see an increase from 20% to 80% in as little as 24 minutes thanks to the 11KW onboard charger. Should you need an additional quick charge, Avenger comes with a built-in fast charging feature which requires just 3 minutes on a 100KW DC charger to give you a 30 km boost. It’s built on the Stellantis Group’s new e-CMP2 modular electric platform that underpins some other well-known crossovers like the 2008 and Mokka. But for the Avenger, it’s been tuned with 60% Jeep-specific parts. There’s also a flat underbody to protect the battery and improve aerodynamic efficiency. The specially tuned suspension gets increased damping force to make it more comfortable on and off-road. The electric powertrain is easy to use - just press one of the gear selection buttons in the centre console for whatever direction you want and off you go - while the steering is light and easy to flick around. The small footprint and decent turning circle of the Avenger means you can throw it into basically any carpark you want, while the suspension
is decently tuned for Irish roads. It’s nicely sorted in the corners, helped by a relatively light 1600kg kerb weight. Despite not having 4WD, the Avenger still retains a degree of off-road readiness thanks to 200mm of ground clearance along with 20 degrees of approach and 32 degrees of departure angles, afforded by those short overhangs. It also offers a couple of off-road modes to alter the drivetrain performance, Sand, Mud and Snow. The Jeep Avenger has achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Along with all-terrain and all-weather capability which translates into fun and safety and leads in the B-SUV segment in both respects. A complete series of safety and ADAS features which provide level-2 driving autonomy include: Blind Spot Monitoring, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Vulnerable Road Users (pedestrian and cyclist) protection, Automatic Parking and Park View Rear Backup Camera.
Conclusion
Despite being an EV the Avenger still has the off-road brand’s DNA. The Avenger is a genuinely good car but it faces stiff competition in the segment. If you want more off-road capability in your electric crossover then the Avenger is certainly worth taking a closer look at. 35
ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS
Š
koda Ireland has confirmed the end of production of one of their most iconic model variants. The Octavia RS TDI diesel will cease production in early 2024.
The history of the RS (Rally Sport) letter combination dates back to 1974, with the development of the 180 RS and 200 RS rally prototypes. Legendary status was secured for Škoda RS models by the 130 RS, with wins at the Monte Carlo and Acropolis Rallies in 1979, followed by gold at the European Touring Car Championship in 1981.
The Škoda RS name re-emerged in 2000 when the Octavia RS was unveiled to coincide with the brand’s entry into the WRC (World Rally Championship). The second generation Octavia RS was launched in 2007 powered by a diesel powertrain for the very first time. The 2.0 TDI, 170bhp unit delivered performance, economy and practicality, making the Octavia RS an instant success. A third generation Octavia RS followed in 2013 and brought increased power (184bhp) and the option of a 4x4 transmission. It was another success story for the Czech brand here in Ireland. The fourth generation model introduced plug-in-hybrid technology for the first time. However, the new diesel 2.0 TDI, 200bhp, with 7-speed DSG transmission was the customer favourite with fuel economy of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometre, 245kph top speed and 0-100km acceleration time of 7.4 seconds. Sadly, the fourth and current generation diesel Octavia RS will be the final act for high-powered, fast Škoda’s bearing the RS lettering. Current trends toward electrification and the introduction of new emissions legislation has led to many manufacturers reviewing their product offerings and the RS is no exception. Priced from €47,845, the Octavia RS diesel will cease production in early 2024 with no plan to re-introduce a successor. Škoda have a loyal following and the brand expects many customers to migrate to the more expensive Octavia 2.0, 245bhp TSI RS petrol variant or to the larger Superb Sportline model. Commenting on the move to discontinue the diesel RS, Ray Leddy, Head of Product and Marketing at Škoda Ireland,

ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS The Škoda Octavia RS diesel is a competent all-rounder. 37
ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS said: “The Octavia RS diesel, in Hatchback or Combi has brought joy to many motorists. Few cars can match its common sense practicality and driving enjoyment. Early in 2024 after 16 years of production, the very last Octavia RS diesel will roll off the production line. To mark this occasion we are launching a special run out colour, unique to Ireland called Cosmic Green. For anybody who has considered owning a diesel Octavia RS, the window is closing fast. Production is limited so I would urge interested parties to contact their local Škoda dealer to secure one of the last of the fast diesels” The Octavia RS has a spacious interior similar to the regular Octavia with plenty of RS upgrades. There are comfortable sports seats that look great and are also very supportive. These are upholstered in fabric but can be upgraded to a mix of tactile Alcantara and leatherette. There’s a sporty steering wheel with a perforated rim, a black roof liner, sports pedals and floor mats and plenty of contrast red stitching, complementing the special dashboard finish. A nice addition is the ‘welcome’ logo projection on the ground as you open the door. And, while the rear seats also look sporty, there’s the same room inside as in any other Octavia, with a huge boot.
38
www.motorsireland.ie
It’s powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that develops 200hp and 400Nm of torque. That’s a 15bhp boost over its predecessor, courtesy of a higher compression ratio and a new aluminium engine block and pistons. It’s offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which means a 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds - not exactly slow. Start the engine and the TDI fires up with the usual diesel noise, but it does settle once up to temperature. At lower speeds and with the driving mode set to normal the RS feels just like a regular Octavia - the only exception being the firmer but still acceptable ride that’s a result of the lowered sports suspension and large alloy wheels. The seven-speed DSG gearbox is good, it’s a little slow with its changes up and down ratios when you use the steering wheel-mounted paddles. It seems to work best when left to its own devices. The grip from the front end is strong enough and it handled well during my test.
Conclusion
It’s a very competent all-rounder delivering family-friendly practicality and decent performance. End of an era and well worth a look in this final fourth generation model.

VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK
T
he second-generation Volkswagen Amarok has finally arrived. Ford played a lead role in the development of the pickup truck, so many of the components and underneath elements are from other Fords. The engines, gearboxes and even the software behind the infotainment system are all of Ford’s creation. It is built by Ford at its South African plant in Silverton, and shares the new Ford Ranger’s platform as part of the Ford Volkswagen global alliance cooperation. Despite Ford’s prominent status in the partnership, Volkswagen played a key role in the Amarok’s creation, and was able to configure the truck in a manner that made it much more than just a photocopy of the Ranger. Every part of the external bodywork bar a few – like the rooftop, mirror housings and door handles – is bespoke to the Amarok, which means that there is little chance of mistaking the two vehicles at a glance. It is undeniably and recognisably a Volkswagen, with elements such as the LED headlights, angular wheel arches and chunky roll bar at the front of the loading bay are all details that will stand out. Bold and dynamic, the new Amarok has an upright bonnet with integrated LED headlights as standard. PanAmerica and Aventura models receive IQ.LIGHT Matrix-LED headlights and an “Amarok” embossed stamp above the number plate holder. Half-round wheel arches give Volkswagen’s pick-up its distinctive look while the word Amarok is emblazoned across the tailgate. With its practical controls and digital screens, the interior has been configured with function and quality in mind. Premium materials resemble those from the luxurious Volkswagen Touareg. Meanwhile, the instrument panel’s layout is clear, well structured, and ergonomically tailored to the driver. At 5,350 mm long, the new Amarok is 96 mm longer than its predecessor. A wheelbase of 3,270 mm represents an increase of 173 mm, providing more room in the spacious double cab. Reduced overhangs result in crisp proportions and improved off-road capability. Ramp angles have been increased to 30-degrees at the front and 26-degrees at the back to improve clearance on rough terrain. Meanwhile, wading depth has been boosted from 500 mm to 800 mm. Powered by efficient four- and six-cylinder turbocharged engines, the Amarok is already 40

a firm favourite with Irish buyers. More than 830,000 first generation Amaroks were sold worldwide since its introduction in 2010. A major model update in 2016 saw the addition of Volkswagen’s powerful and refined V6 TDI engines, opening the Amarok up to a whole new customer base. The second-generation model builds on an already successful formula thanks to the addition of more than 25 assistance systems, infotainment displays measuring up to 12.3in, and high-quality materials throughout. The new Amarok is the perfect partner for any work or leisure activity thanks to a payload of up to 1.19 tonnes and 3.5 ton towing capacity. Available in five trim levels – Amarok, Life, Style, PanAmericana and Aventura - it is available in Ireland as a double cab, four-door pick-up. The new Amarok comes as standard with all-wheel drive. Three efficient four- and six-cylinder turbo diesel engines deliver the power needed for any task. The range starts with a 168HP version of the 2.0-litre TDI power unit (available in entry-level Amarok and Life) trims. Stepping up to the Style model increases output of the 2.0 TDI engine to 202HP and adds a 10-speed automatic transmission (optional in Life trim). Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ acclaimed six-cylinder, 3-litre TDI power plant - the refined V6 that gave pick-ups mainstream appeal in Ireland - is available in Style, PanAmerica and Aventura models. Power has increased to 237HP, making light work of heavy loads, while power is channelled through a new 10-speed automatic transmission. In Ireland, all Amaroks with automatic transmissions are allowed to tow trailers up to 3.5 tonnes. The permissible total weight of vehicle and trailer has increased from 6 to 6.5 tonnes. Meanwhile, the maximum payload has also increased, to 1.19 tonnes. The Amarok comes with all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. Depending on specification, up to 25 assistance systems make driving safer and even more effortless. Assistance features include automatic cruise control system, a parking assistant, 360-degree all-round view (‘Area View’), lane change assistant and road sign recognition.

The driving experience of the all-new Volkswagen Amarok is refined, despite the body-on-frame chassis and leaf springs over the rear axle. While the hardware is “off Ford’s shelf”, Volkswagen has tuned the suspension for optimal ride comfort. The refinement and comfort levels put it above its peers. In some ways Ford has built a nicer-to-drive Ranger than the Ranger it sells – but, to put it in context, you’re paying a bit extra for the Amarok’s superb comfort. That extra money has clearly been spent on improving refinement, because precious little road- and wind noise intrude into the cabin. Granted, the off-road-oriented tyres tend to rumble, but it’s no dealbreaker. The pliant ride quality and hushed cabin is complemented by a surprisingly light steering setup that makes the sizeable Amarok fairly easy to manoeuvre in tight parking situations or narrow town and city centres. The new Amarok range starts from €47,355 for the entry-level Amarok model with a 2.0TDI 168HP engine. Standard equipment is generous, including power folding mirrors, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, VW Connect with eCall Emergency System and Online Voice Control, LED headlights, a 10.1in infotainment system, 8in multifunction display, semi-automatic air conditioning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear-View Camera and parking sensors. Upgrading to Life (from €50,345) adds 17in alloy wheels, body coloured bumpers, 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, rear privacy glass, leather wrapped steering wheel, an electronic parking brake front sensors and rain/light sensing headlights and wipers. Style models (from €64,735) add 18in wheels, a chrome rear bumper, LED-Matrix headlights, heated ArtVelour seats, a 12in portrait-style touchscreen and 12.3-in instrument screen , 10-way electrically-adjustable seats, two-zone Climatronic A/C, Light Assist and Lane Assist. PanAmerica models (from €68,620) get rugged X-shaped bumpers, LED rear lights, black styling bars and step
bars, leather seat trims, a dedicated navigation system, 640-watt Harmon Kardon sound system, ambient lighting, electrically-adjustable passenger seats, black headliner and a 360-degree camera. Meanwhile, range-topping Aventura models (from €70,890) feature large 20in alloys, body coloured sports bars and chrome step bars. As was the case with its predecessor, the large 1,651mm long by 1,584 mm wide cargo bed has enough room for a Euro pallet loaded sideways or lengthways. Loads are secured via robust lashing rings on the bed and side walls. The maximum height of the tail lift has also increased, dependent on specification, by as much as 21 mm to 529 mm. Static roof load capacity has increased to 350 kilograms – enough for a roof tent for overnight off-road adventures. Meanwhile, the list of options includes alloy wheels up to 21in, wireless smartphone charging, all-terrain tyres, bike holders, roll covers and a hard top for the cargo bed. All Amarok models fitted with 12in infotainment systems are also equipped with VW Connect Navigation. This package includes Online Traffic Information, Online Route Calculation, Online Map Updates, POI Search, information on parking spaces and filling stations, and real-time weather updates. The WeConnect ID. App allows owners to interact using their smartphones while an integrated
eSIM means infotainment updates can be carried out over the air. Commenting on the all-new Amarok, Kim Kilduff, Head of Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, said: “The first generation Amarok brought pick-ups to the mainstream and this second generation model is an upgrade in every way. It’s a charismatic vehicle with plenty of presence, on and off the road. The premium finish and refined driving experience have elevated it to another level while even the most challenging off-road experience cannot phase it. We knew we were getting a substantial upgrade but the last few days have proved the Amarok is setting a new benchmark for the pick-up sector here in Ireland.”
Conclusion
Volkswagen’s adaptation of the award-winning Ford Ranger platform stands out. Volkswagen has taken an excellent base – already renowned for its newfound levels of refinement and comfort, without compromising on ability – and applied its own touches that address Volkswagen’s own design standards, cabin quality, and seat comfort. If you’re spending most of your time with this vehicle as your daily driver the Amarok is a nice place to be with a fantastic engine lineup.

T
he Ioniq 6 shares the same fundamental mechanical layout as the Ioniq 5, riding on Hyundai’s dedicated Electric - Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with high-speed 800V charging capacity. But it looks completely different on the outside. Its sleek body shape borrows from the earliest innovations in aerodynamics, to lower overall drag, which, in effect, reduces energy consumption to improve driving range. It is a likeable machine in the metal, and there are some very functional developments – as well as some neat design touches – that are impressive, such as the active flaps in the front grille, the floating rear wing, and numerous pixelated elements in the lighting signature. The rear could be mistaken for something off of a Porsche production line, which is not a bad thing. It is also much larger than it appears in photos, measuring 4855mm in overall length while riding on a 2950mm wheelbase, 1880mm wide and yet standing just 1495mm tall at its highest point. The overall design produces a very low drag coefficient of just 0.21cd, making it one of the slipperiest cars on the planet. This helps it achieve an estimated driving range of 614km on a single charge in the rear-wheel drive model with a 77.4kWh battery, which is powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor that produces 168kW of power and 350Nm of torque and drives the back wheels. Priced from €45,395 the Ioniq 6 is available with the choice of two batteries, the largest of which can take this car over an incredible 600 kilometres on a single charge as mentioned. The Ioniq 6, 53kWh (from €45,395) has a range of up to 429 kilometres (WLTP), while the Ioniq 6, 77.4kWh increases that to as much as 614 kilometres (WLTP) in single motor, rear wheel drive versions,
with consumption as low as 14.3 kWh per 100 kilometres. It also comes with 800-volt battery technology, double the industry standard of 400-volt. DC fast charging is possible up to 232kW and the battery can be 80 per cent charged in just 18 minutes. In Ireland the 53kWh is available in a well-specced Signature trim only, while the 77.4kWh (from €50,245) gives you the option to upgrade to Elegance (from €55,815) for more equipment or the top of the range Finesse with all wheel drive (from €69,250). Ioniq 6 also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology to use or charge other electrical equipment. Other high-end features include heated front and rear seats, Bose stereo, synthetic leather upholstery, 18 inch alloy wheels as standard with 20 inch alloys coming on the Finesse model and lots of standard safety equipment. The single motor, rear wheel drive Ioniq 6 53kWh has 151hp, while the 77.4kWh with the same layout has 229hp. Optional all wheel drive adds a second motor, offering more power (325hp) and torque (605Nm) for the best performance of the range – 0 to 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds. To me, the interior has more personality than the Ioniq 5, it’s less sparse and clinical and comes with a huge environmental embrace. The seats are not only supportive but you can rest easy knowing that they’re made from Eco-processed leather that’s been treated with plant extracts and dyed with flaxseed oil. The door panels and steering wheel have been coated in bio-paint with extracts from rape flowers and corn, while the carpets are made from recycled fishing-nets. There are two 12.3” displays across the dash. One is located behind the steering wheel, displaying all the driving information that you need. Your speed, direction, energy use, and much more are displayed in a customisable way. The other is a touchscreen for the infotain-

ment system. It’s a good size, with excellent definition and an intuitive layout. There are loads of settings so that you can customise the car to the way you like it. I could literally spend hours explaining what the digital screens have on offer, but rest assured, if you want/need it, it’s there. Being an EV, the big thing are the likes of range and power usage and the Ioniq 6 shows both off by means of charts, dials and 3D-style motion. Engaging drive is a little out of the ordinary for those that haven’t been in an Ioniq or an EV before. The selector is on a stalk on the steering column and you just twist to engage drive or reverse and you can also select park. Off the mark, the Ioniq 6 shows its powerful EV-ness and while it’s not overly stomach churning it will thrill passengers. There is obviously a comforting sense of power underfoot and things like overtaking is a breeze. Cornering is good too, with both motors working in unison and creating AWD confidence in all weather conditions – handy because it rained a lot when the Ioniq 6 was in my possession. On the whole the cabin is quiet with very little wind or ambient noise entering from the outside. On the matter of safety, you feel very cocooned in the cabin and Hyundai’s suite of safety and driving aids are epic, however, the moment you accidentally (or otherwise) go over the speed limit, the Ioniq 6 pings and lets you know. Yes it’s very annoying, and
48
www.motorsireland.ie
switching it off requires a fair amount of menu delving but it is possible.
Conclusion
The styling of the Ioniq 6 is probably its most polarising point. It’s one of those cars you need to see in real life I feel. I personally like the aerodynamic looks and swooping roofline. It has good range with great rapid charging capabilities. The Ioniq 6 also has a mature character and while quick isn’t overly sporty for the sake of it.

BMW iX1
he BMW X1 was, in its previous generation, something of a hidden gem among small SUVs. Compact on the outside but yet surprisingly spacious inside, the old X1 impressed, but some of the design and interior details needed upgrading. In the new-generation BMW X1 range, those areas have been addressed. The new X1 is larger still on the inside (but also a touch bigger outside) and alongside the petrol X1 models is a new iX1, a fully-electric compact SUV without sacrificing the space and versatility of other models in the range.
The BMW iX1 features a modern and futuristic design, which is typical of many of the electric vehicles currently on the market. The most striking feature of the exterior is the signature BMW kidney grille, it is distinctive and instantly recognisable. The cooling functions of the upright, large-sized kidneys of the radiator grille have been replaced by a multifunctional and innovative sensor platform for assisted and automated driving. Behind the closed surface of the grille, cameras, sensors and other technologies are hidden, hard at work. The grille is flanked by sharp LED headlights, and the overall design is sleek and aerodynamic. The compact SUV profile is evident, with a raised ride height and a slightly sloping roofline. Overall, the IX1 has a sporty and aggressive appearance. The tall roof line means that both front and rear seats offer plenty of head room. Up front, the low horizontal dash and low console design make for a spacious feel. Storage spaces are plentiful. There’s storage under the centre armrest, and its floating design means you can stash personal items, small bag, or other items between the seats easily. Cupholders sit down low, but not out of reach, and the wireless phone charger pad sits upright at the forward end of the console, with a little lock-in bar to keep your phone in place. Bottle holders and map pockets in the doors, and a decent glovebox, complete the picture. The driving position is natural and upright. This makes it easier to get in and out of, plus helps boost visibility. The rear seat has an adjustable backrest. It’s comfy and quite flat – which helps for putting three across the back. There’s a pulldown armrest with cupholders in the middle section, and bottle holders with pockets in each door. The rear seats get air vents in the back of the centre console but not their own temperature controls. There’s also a pair of USB-C charge points in the rear to go with the two up front. If you want to free up more space, the rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, allowing you to drop the centre section and maintain outboard seats for two occupants, or pull down a wider outboard section on either side. Boot space measures 490 litres with the seats up and expands to 1495L with the seats folded. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. The control display is minimalist with a move towards less buttons. There’s no iDrive controller on the centre console but the voice control works well. The eDrive20 is priced from €52,275 on the road with range up to 473km (WLTP) with standard equipment such as LED headlights and LED rear lights, automatic tailgate, automatic air conditioning, BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW curved 50

BMW iX1 Display, Sport leather steering wheel, lights package and through loading system 40:20:40 with backrest tilt adjustable, automatic transmission with double clutch. Driver assistance systems such as Parking Assistant including Active Park Distance Control along with Cruise Control with brake function are also included. The more powerful dual motor xDrive30 is priced from about €66,000 with a range up to 436km (WLTP) There are a few different trim lines – Sport, xLine and M Sport – which enhance the look as you move up the trim levels. Overall it’s a very good looking SUV, with a bit of style and flair to it – particularly in the M Sport trim. The standard wheel size is 18-inch, with the option to upgrade to 19s or 20s. The iX1 eDrive20 uses a single electric motor to drive the front wheels, with a respectable 204hp and a range of up to 473km (WLTP). For more performance, you will want to step up to the xDrive30. It adds a motor to the rear axle for a combined power output of 313hp. 0-100 km/h is a rapid 5.6 seconds, though the official range drops to 436 km (WLTP). AC charging is up to 11kW, while DC fast charging is possible up to 130kW for an 80% battery charge in about 30 minutes. Because of the added weight and potential structural impact of making the X1 into a battery-electric vehicle, the iX1 was subjected to additional frontal offset, side impact,
52
www.motorsireland.ie
and oblique pole tests in order to verify the integrity of the battery and safety of the high-voltage electrical systems in the event of an impact. The iX1 comes with seven airbags: dual front, seat-mounted side, and full-length curtain airbags are fitted, along with a centre airbag between front seat occupants to reduce the risk of head-clash in a side impact. The BMW iX1 has light steering, making it easy to manage parking or three-point turns. The xDrive30 is very quick for what is a small family SUV and has impressive acceleration. I think the eDrive20 will be the big seller though. The suspension has a firm feel to the way it rides out bumps and dips, but it does so without crashing or bashing over uneven surfaces. There are adaptive dampers fitted as standard to help keep things smooth, but the underlying ride is firm, and can be made firmer, with no true ‘soft’ setting. Overall refinement is good.
Conclusion
There is a fair amount of prestige and excitement in this car that its contemporaries can’t match, and it does feel brilliant on the road. Sitting on an AWD platform with the xDrive30, the iX1’s road presence is incredible. Driving it around windy roads I absolutely loved how this thing handled. If I was buying one I’d go with the eDrive20.

the range. The enhanced interior specification starts with a flexible new track-mounted seating system in the second and third rows, for maximum adaptability when arranging the cabin for people and luggage. The tracked seating enables customers to slide seats forward or back along notched tracks set into the rear cabin floor, or to lift seats out completely. The three second row seats can each be moved independently, while the third row seats have a two seat/ one seat split. The new seats are lighter than those in the outgoing model and the second row features integrated seatbelts, so reconfiguring the cabin – including into a class-unique six-person conference layout – can be done more quickly and easily. ISOFIX points are available on all three seats in the second row as well as the two outboard seats in the third row.

Further front cabin space and increased instrument panel storage is created by the roof-mounted front passenger airbag. This enables customers to keep laptop or A4 folder-sized items in covered dashboard storage, and means portable electronic devices can now be safely fitted closer to the driver with industry-standard AMPS mountings. Overall there is plenty of storage space. There are massive door bins, a decent glovebox, cupholders and massive under-seat stowage.
Conclusion
The Transit Tourneo Custom is refined and comfortable. It has huge space and is very well equipped with huge space. There is a wide range of engines and even an EV variant on the way.
Our test vehicle with its Exclusive ‘Limited’ specification includes full body-colour painted bumpers, bodyside mouldings and door handles, chrome front grille surround, 16” alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, DAB radio, SYNC 3 Infotainment System with an 8” touchscreen display, Voice Control, AppLink, USB port, four speakers, heated front seats, leather-trimmed gearshift knob, air-conditioning, front passenger’s airbag with deactivation switch, and a load area protection kit. This is in addition to standard equipment such as: front fog lights, rear parking sensors, auto lights, wipers, cruise control with adjustable speed limiter, heated windscreen, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, along with the option of a dual front passenger seat to bring the total number of seats to nine (including the driver). Many customers use Tourneo Custom as a mobile living room or office on the road. To support these uses, Tourneo Custom offers the same innovative tilting steering wheel that Ford Pro first revealed in the E‑Transit Custom. The useful, class-unique feature can be used as an ergonomic device holder for laptops and tablets, or folded flat to become a convenient table. The wheel’s “squircle” shape – and a column-mounted shifter for vehicles with an automatic transmission – free up more knee and leg space. 57
