BUGATTI TOURBILLON
The 2026 Tourbillon is the first completely new design from Bugatti since the brand merged with electric sports car maker Rimac in 2021, and it replaces the mega-powered Chiron in the company’s lineup. 10
www.motorsireland.ie
N
I
n 2004, the reborn Bugatti brand transformed the world of automotive performance and luxury with a 1,001 hp hyper sports car: the Veyron. The first road car with more than 1,000 hp was succeeded in 2016 by another engineering feat so ambitious it reset all expectations of performance, the world’s first 1,500 hp car: the Chiron. At the heart of these cars was the world’s most advanced automotive engine: an 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16. Now, 20 years after Bugatti invented the hyper sports car, it redefines the concept completely with an entirely new powertrain and platform. This is the Bugatti Tourbillon. Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, said: The development of the Bugatti Tourbillon¹ was guided at every step by the 115 years of Bugatti history and the words of Ettore Bugatti himself. His mantras ‘if comparable it is no longer Bugatti’ and ‘nothing is too beautiful’ were a guiding path for me personally, as well as the design and engineering teams looking to create the next exciting era in the Bugatti hyper sports car story. “Icons like the Type 57SC Atlantic, renowned as the most beautiful car in the world, the Type 35, the most successful racing car ever, and the Type 41 Royale, one of the most ambitious luxury cars of all time, provide our three pillars of inspiration. Beauty, performance and luxury formed the blueprint for the Tourbillon; a car that was more elegant, more emotive and more luxurious than anything before it. Quite simply, incomparable. And just like those icons of the past, it wouldn’t be simply for the present, or even for the future, but Pour l’éternité – for eternity.” As the first Bugatti in more than 20 years not powered by the iconic W16 engine, the tradition of naming core models after legendary Bugatti racing drivers of the past is no longer applied. Instead, the name Tourbillon was chosen as the perfect encapsulation of this car’s character. A French word, and a subtle reference to Bugatti’s French heritage and home in Molsheim, the tourbillon is a watchmaking invention of a Swiss-born genius living in France in 1801. A completely original creation without compare, it is both complex and beautiful, helping to counteract the effects of gravity on a watch to ensure more consistent time-keeping. And over 200 years later it is still revered as the pinnacle of watchmaking. This sense of mechanical timelessness was a core part of the Bugatti Tourbillon journey. For a car that will be displayed on the concours lawns of this and the next centuries, technology can easily date – especially large digital screens – so it’s important that it uses as many timeless components as possible. The Tourbillon therefore utilises a number of design and engineering techniques that will never age, including a completely analogue instrument cluster crafted by Swiss watch11
BUGATTI TOURBILLON
makers and finished with the same care and attention you find in the world’s greatest timepieces. Just as these become heirlooms over generations, the Tourbillon is designed as a car for eternity. As with every Bugatti of the modern era, the Tourbillon is ‘shaped by speed’. The ability to travel at more than 400 km/h requires every single surface, inlet and ridge to be finely honed to ensure it is not only aerodynamic but also beneficial to the car’s thermodynamics. This is the guiding principle of the Tourbillon, which is then evolved around four Bugatti design elements inspired by history: the horseshoe grille, the Bugatti Line, the central ridge and the dual colour split. Frank Heyl, Bugatti Director of Design, said: “The creations of Ettore and Jean Bugatti are ingenious in their aerodynamics, innovation and enduring beauty. We draw 12
www.motorsireland.ie
from the Bugatti Type 35, where the whole shape of the car was guided by the shape of the horseshoe grille, tapering back into this streamlined fuselage shape. We find inspiration in the Type 57SC Atlantic – the S stood for Surbaissé, which essentially meant lowered – bringing down the frontal area, lowering the roofline, lowering the driver and creating this wonderful stance and proportion. That’s something that was very important for us, carefully curating the placement of volumes that are both functional but also supporting the extreme proportions of the car. If the car is lower, it looks wider and the size of the wheels are emphasized; it looks like there is tension in the muscles, a posture ready to pounce. Every design decision is geared towards creating a sense of speed even at a standstill. “Ever since Jean Bugatti began to apply bold dual-tone paintwork to his cars, it has become an important part of Bugatti design DNA, and in the Tourbillon, we evolve it once more in an authentic but modern way. That split hap-
pens around our fourth key design element: the Bugatti line, inspired by the colour split lines of the Type 41 Royale and reborn as a core design element of both Veyron and Chiron². In-keeping with our new proportions, and lowered roofline, the Bugatti line now curves around more sharply, leaning forwards slightly as it winds its way around the roof, imbuing the side profile with a leaping motion.” Although beautiful in its design and proportions, every surface, intake and vent is carefully honed to balance the enormous aerodynamic forces of a car travelling at over 400 km/h as well as the thermodynamic requirements of a V16 engine, electric motors and battery at full performance. Using over 20 years of expertise from the Veyron and Chiron, the Tourbillon features a number of patented technologies. As a result, the rear wing even remains submerged during top speed runs, with a perfect equilibrium of forces generated by these new innovations. The wing is utilised to establish higher downforce at slower speeds and as an airbrake for improved stability under deceleration. Much of this aerodynamic equilibrium is thanks to the new diffuser concept, which starts to climb from just behind the passenger cabin, rising at an ideal angle to keep the Tourbillon in perfect balance. The diffuser is built around a completely new crash concept, which is fully integrated within the structure of the diffuser itself, keeping it both enormously effective but also hidden from sight, enabling the open rear-end design. At the heart of the Tourbillon’s design ethos is the iconic horseshoe, from which all lines of the car originate, shaping the central fuselage volume. Docked onto that left and right are the flying fenders that allow to stream air underneath the headlights to boost air mass flow into the side intakes. This intricate interplay of airflow is further exemplified by the frontal design, which, while maintaining the dimensions of a sculpted overhang, ingeniously houses an ultra-efficient cooling system that directs air through and out of the front bonnet, augmenting downforce while ingeniously packaging a sizeable frunk in between the two radiators. A set of advanced, electrically actuated dihedral doors not only allow for easy entry into the vehicle but provide a dramatic sense of arrival, able to be opened and closed from the key fob, the door opening button found just underneath the Bugatti Line and on the centre console. Ever since car manufacturers began to embrace digital screens and touchscreens in cars, the rate of progress has been so rapid that within less than a decade, the technology appears outdated. Imagining the Tourbillon on concours d’elegance lawns not just in 10 years but perhaps in 100 years, the design philosophy of the interior focused on timelessness. Inspired by the world of horlogerie, in which wristwatches over 100 years old can still be worn and used today, integrated into modern fashion and lifestyles seamlessly, the design and engineering teams pioneered an authentic analogue experience in the cabin.
The centrepiece of this takes the horlogerie philosophy to its most literal conclusion; an instrument cluster designed and built with the expertise of Swiss watchmakers. Made up of more than 600 parts and constructed from titanium as well as gemstones such as sapphire and ruby, the skeletonized cluster is built to the largest tolerance of 50 microns, with the smallest at 5 microns, and weighs just 700g. This intricately engineered masterpiece remains a focal point of the driving experience, fixed in place as the rim of the steering wheel rotates around it – a setup known as a fixed hub steering wheel. Through this ingenious concept Tourbillon drivers have an unobstructed view of their instrumentation independent of the steering angle because the spokes reach around the back of the instrument cluster. The centre console is a blend of crystal glass and aluminium, revealing the intricate workings of the switches and the engine start ‘pull’ lever that it hosts. This glass was developed over 13 separate stages to ensure it was both perfectly clear and extremely strong and safe in the event of an accident. The aluminium parts of the console are anodised and milled from a single block of metal, while the knurled aluminium switches sit at the head of a complex mechanism that is fully visible beneath the crystal glass – entirely developed in-house. The act of igniting the all-new naturally aspirated V16 engine and electric powertrain has been crafted to be a physical experience, a nod to the rituals of historic automobiles – a pull to start and a push to cease. But hidden from view until desired is a high-definition digital screen, which displays vehicle data and offers seamless mobile connection. An intricately engineered mechanism deploys the touchscreen from the top of the centre console; portrait mode for the reversing camera in just two seconds and full landscape mode in five seconds. Every interior decision – just as it is with the exterior – is made with ultimate performance in mind, without compromising in any way on practicality or comfort. The seats, for example, are fixed to the floor to be as light and as low as they can possibly be, the pedal box can be electrically adjusted forwards and backwards to ensure a comfortable driving position for everyone. Thanks to this new solution, the interior is spacious, making it ideal for longer trips and daily use. Even the audio system is being engineered without traditional speakers and woofers, opting for an advanced system that features exciters on the door panels and throughout the car to use existing interior panels as speakers. It is a lighter and more efficient system than traditional audio set-ups. Christophe Piochon, President of Bugatti, said: “As well as the spectacular analogue innovations that have gone into creating a timeless interior such as this, we focused on authenticity of materials and perfection in every part. Informally we say that ‘what you see is what you get’, describing the fact that if you see a piece of what you think is titanium, then that’s what it is. Or if you see carbon fibre, or leather, then it will be exactly that – and always the best 13
BUGATTI TOURBILLON
possible. With the Tourbillon, we are taking this impeccable authenticity and craftsmanship to the next level. Our completely new Bugatti platform has been designed in every single detail to express the pursuit of engineering excellence. It is clear from looking at any of Ettore Bugatti’s creations that every component – even if it is never seen – is a work of art, and that was our intention with Tourbillon, too. It is stunning in every detail, recognisably Bugatti and also a masterpiece of packaging and engineering.” The Bugatti W16 engine was unlike any other automotive engine in the world when it was revealed. With its four turbos and prodigious power figures, it set a new benchmark for the limits of combustion engine technology, and two decades after its creation it’s still unmatched or replicated. Following in its footsteps is another incomparable masterpiece of internal combustion engineering, paired with the immediate torque and flexibility of electric motors. This next-generation Bugatti hyper sports car is powered by an all-new 8.3-litre naturally aspirated V16 engine – engineered with the help of Cosworth – paired with a front e-Axle with two electric motors and one electric motor mounted at the rear axle. In total, the Tourbillon produces 1,800 hp with 1,000 from the combustion engine itself and 800 hp from the electric motors. It’s an extraordinary achievement – delivered thanks to a host of cutting-edge materials and technology – given the Veyron achieved 1,001 hp from its 8.0-litre capacity engine with four turbochargers, and the new V16 is completely naturally aspirated. Constructed from lightweight materials, the engine weighs just 252 kg. The electric motors are powered by a 25 kWh oil-cooled 800V battery housed in the central tunnel and behind the passengers. With four-wheel-drive and full torque-vectoring, it offers ultimate traction and agility. The front e-axle houses two electric motors, with a further motor on the rear axle, for a total of 800 hp from the electric powertrain system. The electric powertrain, with the electric motors spinning up to 24,000 RPM and a fully integrated dual silicon-carbide inverter, is amongst the most power-dense in the world. The e-axles are delivering over 6 kW per kg of e-axle mass, including inverters, motors and gearboxes. While power, throttle response and torque-fill are priorities for the electric powertrain, the relatively large energy content of 25 kWh allows for a very usable all-electric range of more than 60 km / 37 miles. In the automotive industry, it is expected that each new model is heavier than its predecessor. Especially in case the new model adds a hybrid powertrain or more performance. But with a new Bugatti, the unexpected should be the norm. The Tourbillon boasts significantly improved performance, a very powerful electric powertrain system, a large battery pack and yet, it weighs less than the Chiron, which is a testament to the incredible engineering behind the Tourbillon. With its lightweight construction and instantaneous torque from the electric motors, the Bugatti Tourbillon delivers extraordinary performance.

15
BUGATTI TOURBILLON Thanks to the combination of an extremely advanced hybrid powertrain and lightweight engineering, efficient packaging and advanced aerodynamics, the Tourbillon will be reducing significantly the emissions in comparison to its predecessor but still enhancing the driving experience and bringing to new levels the pinnacle of automotive industry. Emilio Scervo, CTO Bugatti Rimac said: “The Tourbillon had to be incomparable in every respect. Our philosophy has been to take any single aspect of Chiron and elevate it, looking for elegant and sophisticated engineering solutions and new technologies to deliver a timeless masterpiece. We wanted someone to be able to take any piece of this car, from inside, outside or under the skin, and believe that it could be placed in an art gallery. The result is a car which is beautiful inside and outside, the most powerful Bugatti to date which simultaneously elevates mechanical fascination and technical beauty to a whole new level. The powertrain was perhaps the most important decision that we had to make, considering every option available to us; reengineering the W16, going fully electric or creating something entirely new. Ultimately, we chose the hardest possible option, creating a powertrain from scratch and pairing it seamlessly with a complex system of e-motors, a new generation eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and more, all developed from the ground up specifically for the Tourbillon. But it was important to us that this car
16
www.motorsireland.ie
retained that pure and raw analogue feel of a naturally aspirated combustion engine, while pairing it with the agility and ability provided by electric motors. We have already heard what it sounds like when this car reaches its 9,000rpm redline under full throttle, and it is a visceral, awe-inspiring experience that will echo for eternity. With the Tourbillon, we have engineered a car that delivers the best of combustion technology and electrification; free from compromises and built with a timeless dedication to creating a memorable driving experience.” The Tourbillon is designed around entirely new chassis and body structure. The structure is made from a next-generation T800 carbon composite, which incorporates a number of weight-saving innovations, such as integrating the battery as a structural part of the monocoque and an unprecedented crash composite rear diffuser, inspired by top level motorsport. The front composite airducts that flow through the front of the car are also integral to the structure, ensuring that each and every part of the rigid, lightweight structure is optimised. For example, the front and rear frames exhibit low pressure thin wall aluminium casting and 3D printed structural braces, contributing to a structure that is significantly lighter and stiffer than its predecessor!
The completely new chassis integrates multi-link suspension front and rear, forged from aluminium, moving on from the double wishbone steel construction found in the Chiron. By opting for a new organic-designed suspension arm and upright, 3D-printed in aluminium, engineers have saved 45% in suspension weight compared with the Chiron. The rear also features an AI-developed 3D-printed hollow airfoil arm to enhance vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic performance. The brakes are equally advanced, featuring the ultimate carboceramic technology. A bespoke brake-by-wire system is introduced, fully integrated with the moveable pedal box, and blended seamlessly through an integrated vehicle non-linear controller developed by Bugatti to the hybrid powertrain. Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tires – 285/35 R20 at the front and 345/30 R21 at the rear – are a bespoke development for the Tourbillon. Within the new chassis, the new ultra compact and lightweight front e-axle with dual independent motors, including the dual-inverter, fits within the same package space that was available in Chiron, adding more complexity without requiring more space. Designers and engineers also freed up more storage space and a larger luggage component, as part of the clean-sheet chassis and bodyshell design, allowing owners to fit a set of bespoke Bugatti Tourbillon luggage.
Mate Rimac, CEO Bugatti Rimac, said: “We look back through Bugatti history at the creations of Ettore and Jean and you can immediately see that they refused to compromise. The amount of patents Ettore had to his name was incredible, because he didn’t ever want the simplest solution, he always wanted the best solution, even if it didn’t exist yet. He’d go away and he’d build it, test it and refine it until it was perfect. And then he’d make it beautiful. It is why the cars are so revered today, and it is the driving force behind everything we have done with Tourbillon. “So yes, it is crazy to build a new V16 engine, to integrate with a new battery pack and electric motors and to have a real Swiss-made watchmaker instrument cluster and 3D-printed suspension parts and a Crystal Glass center console. But it is what Ettore would have done, and it is what makes a Bugatti incomparable and timeless. Without that kind of ambition, you might create a great hyper sports car, but you wouldn’t create an icon Pour l’éternité’. The Bugatti Tourbillon now enters its testing phase, with prototypes already on the road in anticipation for customer deliveries in 2026. A total of 250 examples will be built, with a starting price of €3.8m EUR net. Hand-assembly will take place at the Bugatti Atelier in Molsheim, following the final W16-powered Bugatti models, Bolide³ and W16 Mistral.

The U8 a luxuriously appointed, visually expressive, full-bodied, 5-door, 4x4, all-terrain, hybrid SUV, the 3.5-tonnes U8 is powered by a 49.05 kWh BYD Blade battery – robustly protected and integrated into the vehicle’s chassis as part of BYD’s Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) technology – and supported by four permanent electric motors delivering 295bhp to each wheel, backed up by a front, transverse-mounted, 2-litre, 4-cylinder turbo charged petrol engine which works as a range-extender. In performance terms, the combined on-road/off-road hybrid U8 boasts a massive 1,200 bhp, with acceleration from zero to 100kms in just 3.6 seconds. It has a top speed of 199.5 kms/h and a (CLTC) battery range of up to 1000 kms. Built on their ‘technically innovative’ e4 Platform, the U8 embodies cutting-edge technology, stemming from BYD’s two decades of R&D experience, and evident in a variety of highly imaginative features, many safety related. For example, in the event of a sudden tyre blowout, a Vehicle Stabilisation System helps the driver to maintain a safe course. An emergency ‘flotation’ function enables the U8 to ‘float’ on water for 30 minutes and motor forward at a gradual 3 kms/h speed - with the additional capacity to ‘wade’ through floods with a snorkel exhaust fitted. Other safety-related features are its DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control – an active suspension system that uses hydraulic actuators to increase ground clearance by 15cms. A differential steering system enables it to perform 180-degrees ‘tank-turns’.

VOLVO EX30
VOLVO EX30 The Volvo EX30 is a cornerstone of the strategic transformation that Volvo is on as a company.
28
www.motorsireland.ie
“The EX30 is Volvo’s smallest SUV yet.”
29
VOLVO EX30
B
y mid-decade, Volvo is aiming for half of global sales volumes to consist of fully electric cars and to reach an operating profit margin of 8-10 per cent. By 2030, they plan to sell only fully electric models. The EX30 is expected to be one of their best-selling models in the coming years as they work towards those ambitions, and it will significantly contribute to their growth and profitability objectives. With the Volvo EX30, they enter a new and fast-growing segment for the Volvo brand. There is a growing demand from consumers globally for small, fully electric premium SUVs. For example, many people living in the city are looking for a car that brings convenience and allows them to commute to work and get around, while doing so in a way that reflects who they are.
The Volvo EX30 is the ultimate eco-friendly car from Volvo, perfectly blending advanced technology with timeless Scandinavian design. Its long wheelbase, large wheels, and equal overhangs create a very nice exterior. The striking front end, closed shield, and adapted Thor’s Hammer headlights highlight its electric nature. The frameless door mirror design optimises the rear view by fully utilising the mirror casing. This minimalistic design enhances the contemporary, sleek look of the car. With a range of five vibrant colours, from the Cloud Blue version I drove to even Moss Yellow. The EX30 is Volvo’s smallest SUV yet, at 4,233 mm (13.89 feet) long, shorter than the 4,440 mm (14.57 feet) of the XC40. It’s also 30 mm slimmer, and just under 100 mm lower in height. Although the silhouette is a slight departure for Volvo, the EX30 is still reminiscent enough of a shrunken XC40 to signal it clearly hails from the same brand. Volvo’s EX30 interior exemplifies the
brand’s commitment to environmentally conscious design. With its modern and clean aesthetics, Volvo incorporates reused and renewable fabrics like denim, flax, and wool. There are four distinct interior designs or ‘rooms’ – Breeze, Indigo, Mist, and Pine – each featuring a unique combination of recycled and renewable materials. Let’s delve into the materials used in the interior, the so-called “rooms” of the Volvo EX30. As said before various sustainable materials find its use here. The “Mist” and “Pine” rooms showcase woven flax from linseed plants, beautifully incorporated into the dashboard and door decorations. For the “Indigo” room, upcycled denim fibers from jeans recycling lend a unique touch. The “Breeze” room, on the other hand, showcases ground plastic waste from discarded window frames and roller shutters. Crafted with a commitment to sustainability, the seat upholstery in the “Mist” room features a tailored wool blend, comprising 30% responsibly produced wool and 70% recycled polyester. Additionally, the “Breeze,” “Indigo,” and “Pine” rooms boast Nordico, a bio-attributed material derived partly from Finnish- and Swedish-sourced pine oil. To complete the eco-friendly design, the “Breeze” room’s seat upholstery utilises a knitted textile made entirely from 100% recycled polyester. Notably, all interior designs feature carpets crafted from 100% recycled PET bottles. We admire the interior design, Volvo has created in the EX30. The rooms of the Volvo EX30 harmoniously complement the exterior design and colour palette, creating a perfect blend that enhances the overall appeal. Speaking of the user experience: the Volvo EX30 presents a simplified and user-friendly experience with all the necessary information available on a single 12.3-inch touchscreen. Which in turns means: the availability of information in your direct line of sight has changed, including common information such as
“Torque’s delivered in a sensibly linear manner” 30

speed. This adjustment requires some getting used to. One thing that we highly appreciate in a car is the sound system. The Volvo EX30 is equipped with a soundbar, that is inspired by home audio systems. It consists of multiple speakers that distribute sound throughout the car’s interior. When combined with the high-end sound system from Harman Kardon, it delivers exceptional audio quality for an immersive in-car listening experience. The EX30’s light of steering, beautiful to manoeuvre in town, neatly balanced and feels solid on the road with impressive sound-deadening. Turn up the sound system on the large sound bar and you’d happily while the hours away. It cruises without fuss on decent roads, but can be a little out of sorts on rough surfaces. A combination of low-profile tyres, firm suspension and it not being the trimmest of Swedes – the single motor’s 1810kg and dual motor’s 1920kg. The single motor has all the performance you need. Hitting 100km/h in a little over five seconds is absolutely fast enough. The EX30 is a long way from a performance car in terms of its shape, mass, suspension and intentions, so despite its numbers, this isn’t to be confused with a car you’d push in the corners. Torque’s delivered in a sensibly linear manner, there’s no vulgar wheelspin, yet you’re shifted along at speed. There’s fun enough to be had, and you’re licence feels slightly safer in the entry level. The EX30 is available with a standard or extended range battery and there is the choice of single motor or twin motor versions. The entry single motor version has a 51kWh battery, 272hp and comes with a range of 337km starting at €38,596. The best for range is the single motor, extended range model that we drove during our test, which uses a 69kWh battery and offers up to 476 kilometres of range (WLTP) starting at €44,502. It’s a quick car with 272hp sent
32
www.motorsireland.ie
to the rear wheels and 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds. The top of the range twin motor model compromises a small bit of your range for staggeringly quick performance. It’s got 428hp and 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds! The official range figure is 450 kilometres and price is €48,883. When it comes to charging, 11kW AC comes as standard with Ultra models upping that to 22kW. At a fast charger, the EX30 standard range can charge up to 134kW and the extended range up to 153kW. That translates to a 10-80% charge for both in about 26 minutes. Conclusion The EX30 has great appeal, an interesting eco interior, strong features and – no matter the model – serious performance. The flagshig twin motor version is quick. It’s that quick just because it can be, rather than to make it a better car. The smart money’s on the single motor; its chassis and steering’s a much better match. I’d also opt for the longer range version personally. If you don’t expect long drives then the single motor with 337km range could be your best option.

EV CHARGING
ESB BOOSTS IRELAND’S EV CHARGING NETWORK
E
SB has invested almost €90m in building the country’s largest public charging network since the inception of our ecars business in 2010. Today, we operate and maintain over 1,600 charge points across the island of Ireland.
34
www.motorsireland.ie
In line with Ireland’s climate targets, we aim to build out the network to 3,000 chargers by 2030 and this represents an investment of more than €300 million. We have made significant progress to date installing 42 multi-vehicle, high-power charging hubs nationwide over the past two years and replaced over 300 chargers to increase the speed and
capacity of the network. Our focus continues to be on providing charging hubs on high volume routes, such as motorways and national routes, with amenities that are well-lit and accessible to all. EVs have developed into a key aspect of the Irish car market and play a significant role in helping to achieve Ireland’s climate change targets. We are making improvements to our network to reassure customers that we are there when they need us on their journey.
Improving our Customer Experience
At ESB ecars, we pride ourselves in continuously improving our customer experience. We are delighted to have recently announced a price reduction across our public EV charging network in the Republic of Ireland. We lowered our prices following reductions in wholesale energy costs while continuing to upgrade and improve our charging infrastructure across the country. We keep our prices under constant review and are committed to providing value to our customers with competitive prices. We have also introduced contactless as a payment method on our High-Power chargers from June, making it easier for customers to use our chargers without needing to sign
up. We continue to rollout this payment feature on our Fast chargers over the coming months, and this will help improve our customers’ experience. We conduct regular customers surveys to understand how our customers feel about our service. We use this valuable feedback to input into our decision making. Our recent survey found that 76% of respondents support the overstay fee. We received suggestions on how our customers felt we could improve this to reduce queuing for chargers. We listened to the feedback, and the existing one-off overstay fee of €8 has been replaced by a more progressive, incremental 50/min fee to further encourage drivers to free up charge points for other drivers when finished charging. Other customer-focused offerings include our dedicated customer service team that is available 24/7 to assist with any queries. Our comprehensive website and app also provide customers with features such as live charge point availability, route planning and charging history. We are constantly developing new technologies and partnerships to enhance the customer experience, supporting customers on their transition to low-carbon mobility. TOYOTA RAV4 GR SPORT PHEV he Toyota RAV4 has always been at the cutting edge of the car market since it originated the concept of the easy-to-drive, highly versatile recreational SUV almost 30 years ago. Today, it consistently ranks not just as the world’s best-selling SUV, but also as one of the best-selling cars across all types and genres.
Year after year, Toyota has made sure the RAV4 keeps ahead of the game where customers’ tastes and preferences are concerned, adopting new technologies and design thinking to keep the car’s appeal and its capabilities up to the moment. The latest chapter in the RAV4 story is the new RAV4 GR SPORT, an addition to the range that comes with styling and equipment features that express sportiness and sophistication that are inspired by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing – the cradle of Toyota’s mission to create ever-better cars through motorsport. The GR SPORT theme has already been successfully applied to a wide range of other Toyota models, ranging from Yaris, Yaris Cross, C-HR and Corolla to the mighty Hilux pick-up. The RAV4 now picks up the baton in its own inimitable style. A series of exterior design details distinguishes the new RAV4 GR Sport from the standard RAV4 range. The car’s front end makes a statement with the prominent grille finished in the GR-exclusive G-mesh pattern, which creates a deeper 3D-effect. The same pattern is applied to the enlarged fog light bezels, which also have distinctive boomerang-shaped frames, giving added prominence to the vehicle’s strong stance. Adding to this effect, the lower bumper has a dark grey metallic finish, in place of the silver featured on other RAV4 models. At the rear, the back window’s appearance has been thrown into sharper relief by a gloss black garnish that extends the width of the vehicle, between the glass and the licence plate. The G-mesh pattern appears again in the rear bumper, which also has air-bleeding openings to improve aerodynamic performance. Further emphasising the RAV4’s purposeful look, the lower bumper has a dark grey metallic moulding across its bottom edge. Discreet GR logo badging on the front grille and back door also signifies the GR Sport grade. The RAV4 Luna Hybrid is priced from €44,450 and comes with a 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with self charged Hybrid technology. Features include 10.5” multimedia display, Smartphone Integration with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7” screen for information display, dual-zone air conditioning and Smart Entry & Start System. The RAV4 Sol is priced from €47,620 and comes with the same engine and hybrid technology as in the Luna model. In the Sol you get a 12.3” screen for information display, heated driver and front passenger seats and 18” dark silver alloy wheels along with features available in the Luna model. The RAV4 Sport increases pricing up to €50,370 and you get the same engine and hybrid technology. Features include Dual-zone automatic air conditioning, power-sliding driver seat, wireless mobile phone charger, Smart Entry & Start Sy-

Features include the above from other models along with heated steering wheel, memory function driver seat, blind spot monitor and rear view camera. For the top of the range Toyota RAV4 GR Sport PHEV AWD that we drive you’re looking at a price tag of €59,430. The GR Sport comes with 19” GR SPORT glossy black alloy wheels (5-double-spoke), GR Sport front fog lamps (LED), Power-sliding front passenger seat, Power-reclining front passenger seat, Memory function on driver seat, Power-height-adjustable front passenger seat, Heated steering wheel, Puddle lamps on door mirrors, Intelligent front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Panoramic View Monitor, Front GR Sport seats along with Synthetic Leather and Suede Upholstery Toyota delivered the most powerful RAV4 yet with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid electric system that produces a maximum 306hp. This level of power enables acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds; raw speed apart, the powertrain is engineered for driveability, with 50% more power available at 60 km/h. Even when driving in all-electric EV mode, performance is brisk, with acceleration comparable to a 2.0-litre petrol vehicle. Its efficiency is maximised by the car running in EV mode by default, then switching to self-charging hybrid electric

running when the charge in the lithium-ion battery is depleted. On a full charge, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid GR SPORT can cover up to 75 km (WLTP combined cycle). The RAV4 GR Sport is an engaging driving experience thanks to improvements to the suspension with stiffer springs and revised shock absorber settings creating an engaging driving experience on twisty backroads. Overall, the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport is a pleasant drive. Take your time to exploit the AWD-i Hybrid system’s potential and you soon start to understand its saving potential. Super smooth on the motorway, it is however at its best in and around town in my opinion. Toyota manufacturer’s warranty ensures that every trip runs smoothly with: Manufacture Warranty • 3yrs/100,000km - Manufacturer’s Warranty • 3yrs/unlimited mileage - Surface rust/ Paintwork · 12yrs/unlimited mileage – Corrosion Perforation Hybrid Warranty • 5yrs/100,000km - All Hybrid Components (Including Hybrid Battery) • Up to 15yrs/unlimited mileage Hybrid Battery Warranty once serviced with a Toyota Dealer
Conclusion
Overall this is a solid SUV, which drives well and is practical. It’s low emissions and long electric-only range mean it could be ideal for drivers who don’t want to make the move to full electric just yet.

PEUGEOT e-2008
The e-2008 also features Peugeot’s i-Cockpit dashboard layout, which combines a tiny, low-set steering wheel and high-set instrumentation. This design can be a bit polarising, as the wheel can obstruct some of the instrumentation and may not provide the most comfortable driving position for everyone. In terms of storage, the e-2008 offers roomy door pockets and ample cupholders. The second row offers moderate room for little ones or a couple of adults on short journeys, with separate power outlets but no rear air vents.
42

The boot space is 434 litres, which extends to 1467L with the 60/40-split folding rear seats stowed. The Peugeot e-2008’s infotainment system is designed to be user-friendly, but it does have a few quirks. The system is centred around the 10-inch touchscreen display, which is accompanied by a bank of piano keys and hard-wired switchgear underneath it. This set-up allows for relatively easy climate-control adjustment on the move and eliminates the need to dig through touchscreen sub-menus for these functions which I really liked.

The screen features DAB+ digital radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite navigation. It’s also paired with a separate 10-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display. The e-2008 is a good crossover to drive, providing a blend of comfort and performance that allows drivers to make the most of many situations. It balances requirements nicely, working well in town, on twisty roads, or on the motorway. The battery drops the centre of gravity improving agility, and the compact dimensions mean the e-2008 is excellent in tight city streets. On the road, and particularly
in urban settings, the e-2008 feels faster than the figures suggest and delivers entirely acceptable performance on the open road. The e-2008 also has a trick up its sleeve with Sport mode adding a burst of extra torque for better acceleration. Pricing is €35,895 for the Active spec, €37,850 for the Allure and €40,675 for GT.
Conclusion
A stylish and refined crossover, the Peugeot e-2008 is one of the best in its class, combining a decent range with practicality

MERCEDES-BENZ CLE 220 D AMG-LINE PLUS
MERCEDES-BENZ
CLE
The rise of SUVs has seen a decline in passenger car sales, and that’s impacting the emotional coupes we all once sought after. That’s one reason why Mercedes-Benz is amalgamating models like the C-Class coupe and E-Class coupe into one. 44
www.motorsireland.ie
T
he new two-door CLE Coupé is a model making its first appearance on the Irish market. Two of the most popular coupé models in the Mercedes-Benz range become one with the introduction of an all-new model line, the CLE Coupé.
Conceived to take the place of two models now discontinued, the C-Class and E-Class coupés, it has a sleek, athletic appearance with strong sporty overtones that will likely appeal to an even broader base of coupé owners, not least those of a younger generation. Owners of the previous C-Class Coupé can feel particularly ‘comfortable’ in stepping up to the all-new CLE Coupé, which is larger in every physical dimension, resulting in extra cabin space across every key measure. The model gains an additional 60 litres of cargo space in the boot over the C-Class Coupé. Features of note are its dynamic character line, steeply sloping windscreen and long roof that tapers back towards the rear. Its sporty characteristics are most evident in its 15mm lower posture (1,428mm), long wheelbase (2,865mm), and short overhangs (888mm front/1,090mm rear). Its aerodynamic front end has a pronounced appearance seen in its low-slung, forward-leaning bonnet on which by two contoured power domes add extra appeal. New wrap-around, high-performance LED headlights enhance its visual appeal, as do its new three-dimensional radiator grille with centre star and single chrome louvre strip set against a background of tiny ‘star’ motifs familiar on other Mercedes-Benz models. At the rear, its striking taillight arrangement melds with an uncluttered, seamless bodywork finished in a choice of 10 exterior colours. Powerful wheel arches accommodate 18-inch to 20-inch alloy wheels depending on model choice. Inside, tech-focused features abound. A fully digital 312mm instrument cluster and a 302mm central touchscreen display, angled towards the driver, house a multiplicity of controls and information. New electronic architecture delivers fast 5G data transmission. Seats designed for the CLE are covered with sustainably-processed, vegetable-tanned leather, are heated with four-way lumbar support as standard. Its flat-bottomed steering wheel is wrapped in leather. Billed as the ‘most intelligent coupé with the star’, its many occupant and driver comfort features include the latest third-generation MBUX infotainment system. Delivering a new level of personalisation, its automated convenience functions include a third-party apps download facility and voice assistance accessed via its ‘Hey Mercedes’ command function. Other features include a 17-speaker surround-sound system, remote start, proximity lock/unlock, hands-free boot access,
45
MERCEDES-BENZ CLE 220 D AMG-LINE PLUS numerous driver-assistance systems, and mood-soothing interior ambient lighting in a 64-colour choice. The CLE Coupé range will have three models: CLE 220, CLE 300 and CLE 450. Within the mix, choice will include 4 and 6-cylinder versions, mild hybrid petrol and diesel units, 9-speed automatic transmission, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and AMG variants. As it expands, plug-in hybrid and open-top cabriolet versions will be added. At launch, mild hybrid models are: a 255hp four-cylinder CLE 300 and a 375hp three-litre, six-cylinder CLE 450 4Matic. Both are equipped with integrated starter-generator running on a 48-volt electrical system that provides an extra 23hp boost that reduces turbo lag and smooths-out the start/stop function when the engine is running at low speed. In both models, 9-speed automatic transmission and four wheel drive are available with multilink front and

rear suspension. A stiffer sport-tuned suspension, standard on the CLE450, is offered on the CLE 300 with AMG package high performance. Of the models being sold in Ireland initially, prices range from €73,215 for the CLE 220 d. My test car was the CLE 220 D Coupe AMG Line Plus. Options fitted to my test car included a Night Package, MBUX Augmented Reality Navigation, a Premium Package and a Panoramic Sliding Sunroof. A vast amount of comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features come as standard, as does Mercedes-Benz’ legendary build quality. Standard equipment includes the two MBUX screens, ambient lighting, blind-spot assistance, traffic sign reading, ‘Premium’ navigation, parking assistance with reversing camera, keyless entry and ignition, little extending bars that hand you your seatbelt, fingerprint scanner for different drivers’ settings, heated and electrically adjustable
front seats, digital key options, 18-inch alloy wheels and wireless phone charging. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine provides plenty of pace with strong overtaking ability. With 197bhp and 440Nm of torque available, the car can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.5-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 238km/h. The CLE 220 d I drove should easily satisfy a wide swath of drivers. It demands little effort and remains comfortable in any situation, making it an excellent daily driver. Power is plentiful when merging onto a flowing motorway or passing slower traffic. On winding roads, the CLE is composed and confident but doesn’t encourage sporty driving past a certain point. Instead, Mercedes-Benz tuned the suspension for compliance and a smooth ride, which it delivers in excess. It’s a wonderful way to see the scenery on a long journey in calming luxury. The suspension smooths over road imperfections to keep them from feeling harsh. Selecting the sport drive mode sharpens throttle response and stiffens the suspension but doesn’t fundamentally change the CLE’s character.
Conclusion
You can’t do much better for comfortable luxury touring than the new Mercedes-Benz CLE. It’s a joy to drive and the interior refinement is second to none.

he eighth-generation BMW 5-Series is like none before it. It’s available as an EV for the first time and the electric variants could be the top sellers. Like all previous model generations, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. In 1973, the first vehicle manufactured at the plant was a first-generation BMW 5 Series Saloon. The road presence of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is enhanced by its athletic proportions and the larger exterior measurements compared to its predecessor. The eight generation vehicle has grown in length by 97mm to 5,06mm, in width by 32mm to 1,900mm and in height by 36mm to 1,515mm. The wheelbase has been increased by 20mm to 2,995mm for improved seating comfort, especially in the rear. The saloon is now available with a panoramic roof – the first time in the model’s history – and the digital experience is taken to a new high with cutting-edge additions of AI-driven servicing notifications and the introduction of in-car gaming. Available in three exceptionally well specified trim levels in Ireland – M Sport, M Sport Pro and the exclusive BMW i5 M60 xDrive – the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is available to order now priced from €70,845 for the 520i, €91,105 for the i5 eDrive40 MSport. The BMW 5 Series Saloon range also features BMW 530e and BMW 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid models, which offer an electric range of 78 – 90kms (WLTP) and 86 – 100kms (WLTP) respectively. The exterior design of the latest generation reinterprets the sporty elegance of a BMW 5 Series Saloon in the brand’s current design language. Its proportions make the character of the dynamic business saloon instantly recognisable.
54
www.motorsireland.ie
The front view of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is characterised by a modern interpretation of the brand’s signature twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. The LED headlights show the hallmark four-eye face in a modern and reduced form. Daytime driving lights and turn indicators are generated by two nearly vertical LED elements arranged on the outside. The Adaptive LED Headlights incorporate both the cornering light and the Matrix High Beam including the glare-free High Beam Assist BMW Selective Beam. M Shadow Line lights with black trim for the inside of the headlight housings are standard on M Sport Pro models. The new BMW 5 Series Saloon offers customers an appealing welcome and goodbye display. Among other things, the headlights and the light carpet projected from the vehicle sill are atmospherically orchestrated. The clear and reduced design language is also expressed in the side view of the BMW 5 Series Saloon. Its elongated proportions, long bonnet and almost upright BMW kidney grille are clearly visible. The sporty character of the Saloon’s typical three-box design is also expressed in the steeply sloping A-pillar, the gently flowing roof line towards the rear and the slightly sloping luggage compartment line. At the rear, the shoulder and roof lines flow harmoniously into the contours of the lights. The flat rear lights interpret the brand’s hallmark L-shape with modern appeal. Inside, four narrow, horizontally aligned LED strips generate the lighting functions, divided by an L-shaped chrome strip. Similar to the headlight units, strikingly designed LED units also function as daytime running lights. Technology is where BMW’s i5 really stands out as a premium offering and it has a very impressive suite of electronic features. Immediately obvious is the vast curved display, which fuses both the driver’s 12.3-inch display with the 14.9-inch central touchscreen behind a single seamless pane. Not only is it visually impressive, but the functionality is just as respectable. Also included is a large

full-colour and customisable head-up display, completing the extensive information and entertainment and access to a wide range of services. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported wirelessly, and made simpler by a wireless device charging pad in the central console. As standard, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is the first model in Ireland to feature Veganza upholstery from the initial launch. The new BMW 5 Series Saloon includes black seat surfaces in the leatherlike Veganza finish, with the material also extending to the dashboard and door panels. Optionally, the leather-free surface material is also available with a decorative perforation and in three other colours. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bicolour variants. The newly designed seats offer increased comfort and optimised adjustment options. Sport seats are included as standard and incorporate electric height and inclination adjustment as well as a heating function. Active seat ventilation is available as part of the Comfort Plus Pack. The backrests of the outer rear seats extend far into the door areas, increasing comfort. The rear seats can be heated as part of the Comfort Plus Pack. The entire rear seat
backrest is now divided as standard in the ratio 40:20:40. The luggage compartment of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon has a total storage volume of up to 520 litres (490 litres on i5 models). Despite their drive units being integrated in the rear axle, the all-electric BMW i5 models have a luggage compartment volume that is almost equivalent to the other variants. The Travel & Comfort System, available as part of the Comfort Pack, adds ambient lighting elements to the backs of the front seats to emphasise the atmospheric ambience. The standard M Sport specification includes an anthracite-coloured roof lining, while M Sport Pro models also feature M seat belts. The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System provides a super sound experience with 12 speakers and a 205 watt amplifier. With 18 speakers and amplifier output boosted to 655 watts, the optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System guarantees an outstanding acoustic experience. A seven-channel digital amplifier creates a clear sound experience in all seats. Two USB-C ports are fitted as standard in the front of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon and two further USB-C ports in 55

the back. Optionally, a further USB-C port is available in the backrests of the front seats. The BMW Interaction Bar was first presented in the new BMW 7 Series and is now also available in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. The backlit unit with crystalline surface extends below the trim strip across the width of the instrument panel far into the door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels for controlling ventilation and air conditioning. Part of the standard Ambient Light, its lighting design is based on the selected My Modes and can be customised. Getting in and out of the car is accompanied by a welcome and farewell scenario, staged with lights on the BMW Interaction Bar. The BMW Interaction Bar interacts with the passengers in the form of dynamic light animation and indicates incoming telephone calls, among other things. It also indicates to the driver and front passenger when it is safe to get out the car thanks to the Safe Exit function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 combines advanced BMW eDrive technology with traditional rear-wheel drive. The electric motor is located directly in the rear axle and generates maximum output of 340hp and maximum torque of 400Nm or 430Nm with the Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The zero-to-100km/h sprint is covered in 6.0 seconds, while maximum speed is electronically limited to 193km/h. Its combined power consumption is between 19.5 and 15.9kWh per 100kms. One of the most positively surprising things about the i5 is how much it feels like a BMW 5 Series. BMW has presented the i5 exactly how you would have thought the 5 Series should have evolved to retain all of the elements one might expect while adding in essential progress needed. Its steering is direct and the driving position is luxurious and comforting, but not unsupportive in corners and under heavy braking. The i5 offers a wonderful balance of dynamics and ride quality that the very best 5 Series models have possessed over the decades. At no point did I feel the eDrive 40 was lacking traction 56
www.motorsireland.ie
with rear-drive only, and the two-wheel-drive set-up combined with reasonable torque and decent tyres was a good arrangement. With a motor output of 340hp and 430Nm as mentioned, the i5 isn’t slow and if you need more power then the M60 version with almost 600hp might be for you. The i5’s power and acceleration is perfectly intuitive, combined with an almost equally well-calibrated brake pedal for both regenerative and conventional braking, the i5 eDrive 40 is extremely easy to drive smoothly and is exceptionally relaxing for all on board as a result. As you might expect, minimal noise levels certainly contribute to cabin comfort, unless you don’t want near silence – here too the i5 can oblige. The Iconic Sounds option allows a different synthetic sound to be played into the cabin depending on the selected My Drive mode. Designed by renowned composer Hans Zimmer, the sounds are intriguing. If you’re looking for efficiency when driving you can select Mode Efficient, the range of the BMW i5 can be increased by up to 25 percent by limiting drive power and top speed, combined with reduced comfort functions. The Max Range mode was designed for situations where a planned charging stop is no longer possible. The maximum speed is limited to 90km/h; the air conditioning is deactivated; rear window heating is reduced; steering wheel and seat heating and ventilation are deactivated. The range gained in this way is shown on the Control Display, the speed and power scales are adjusted on the Information Display and the additional range is taken into account in the range forecast. Conclusion While traditionalists may gravitate towards the more affordable 520i, those prepared to splash out will be rewarded with a more exciting drive in the i5. The exciting electric four-door plays to the BMW strengths and provides a tempting alternative for those open to a luxurious electric sports saloon.

T
he latest generation of France’s bestselling car, which has sold almost 60,000 units in Ireland, has undergone a new reinvention for the modern world, becoming a perfect illustration of Renault’s New Wave brimming with its latest breakthroughs. The new Clio adds a contemporary and cutting-edge twist to what is considered by many to be one of the most emblematic city cars available. The E-Tech full hybrid powertrain brings Clio up-to-the-minute in a new electrified world, ensuring the model’s popularity and incredible success are set to continue. The Renault Clio is about as well-known a car as they come. Beloved by all different types of drivers, it’s a car which has transcended motoring groups throughout the years. Ever since its introduction in 1991 the Clio has been known for its chic looks, and the new Clio continues its status as an automotive style icon. It debuts with a more assertive and elegant exterior that showcases Renault’s new design language. Notably, its completely redesigned front end boasts taut lines for an overtly sporty look and features the brand’s new signature lighting that is inspired by the Nouvel’R logo and incorporates slender full-LED headlamps. The new Clio is just as impressive under its sleek new exterior, too. In E-Tech full hybrid form, it complements its elegant, high-tech style with an electrified drivetrain that is at the forefront of hybrid technology, and which is designed to perfectly meet the requirements of today’s drivers. Combining efficiency with optimum usability, the advanced powertrain means it is ideal for both city dwellers and those whose travel is focused more on motorways than urban roads. The petrol/electric hybrid produces 145hp for strong performance and offers a range of up to 880km, while also emitting as little as 96g/km CO2 and returning as much as 4.2l/100km combined (WLTP). The latest Clio can use the electric motor up to 80 percent of the time in cities – cutting fuel consumption by up to 40 percent compared to a conventional petrol engine – with the benefits of near silent running. For those customers who prefer a more analogue driving experience, the TCe 90 petrol engine with 6-speed manual gearbox produces emissions of 118g/km while delivering fuel consumption of 5.2l/100km. The advanced technology in the Clio extends to the availability of up to 17 ADAS functions, including those usually found on much larger and more expensive vehicles, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert. Inside, the chic interior mirrors the highly contemporary, sophisticated feel of the stylish exterior. Noted as a highlight of the previous Clio, it is improved further still in the new Clio. RENAULT CLIO ESPRIT ALPINE benefits from more sustainable materials and a significant leap in quality. Importantly, there is no leather: instead, the surfaces are covered in TEP, a grained coated fabric made of bio-sourced and recycled polyethylene fibres. Each version has its own unique trim, with the techno and esprit Alpine both featuring the new synthetic leather. Additionally, the seats, door panels, and dashboard of the techno trim are clad in a specially developed sustainable fabric that comprises up to 60 per cent TENCEL Modal branded fibres. The Clio is not only the first car that features this bio-based cellulosic fibre, but it is also the first time these sustainable fibres have been used extensively in a vehicle. Customers of the new Clio have a choice of three generously-equipped trim levels – Evolution, Techno and the top-of-the-range esprit Alpine. A comprehensive standard specification merges convenience and comfort to provide today’s supermini customer with the increased levels of connectivity, safety and refinement that they demand. Features shared across the range include diamond-cut alloy wheels, electrically folding and heated door mirrors, hands-free key card, automatic air

conditioning, full LED headlights and rear lights, Easy Link touchscreen with built-in navigation and wireless smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, one-touch electric front windows and the ECO mode function that optimises environmentally friendly driving. The Evolution trim starts the new, streamlined Clio range, priced from €24,845. Its additional standard equipment includes a 7-inch digital driver display, 7-inch Easy Link touchscreen, 16-inch alloy wheels, and rear parking sensors. The mid-range Techno trim adds features that include a reversing camera, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, shark fin antenna, wireless phone charger, and Multi-Sense with ambient lighting. It costs from €26,545. At the top of the range is the Esprit Alpine we tested – the new level of trim that recently made its debut in the all-new Renault Austral E-Tech full hybrid. Now available for the New Clio, it intertwines the Alpine brand’s sporting hallmarks and Renault’s adventurous new style with the addition of standard features such as unique ‘Alpine’ embossed 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, Matte Shadow Grey front blade, distinctive enveloping seats with
blue overstitching and Alpine detailing, heated front seats and steering wheel, 10-inch digital driver display, 9.3-inch Easy Link touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert. One of the most well-equipped versions of the Clio ever, the esprit Alpine is priced from €28,345. Our test car was powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, supported by an electric motor, a 1.2kWh battery and a clutchless gearbox. The electric motor starts the car & gets you moving from standstill, so that you always pull away under electric power. There’s a starter generator which is there to start the petrol engine and also smoothes out the clutchless gear changes. You can select a regenerative ‘B’ mode in the gear changes and this will add a few extra EV kilometres to the range. On the motorway simply select your driving mode, Eco being the obvious range saver, and away you go. As a whole, the best way to enjoy the Clio E-Tech is just to sit back and let it do it’s own thing. I travelled a lot of kilometres for work in my test week. Drive in D mode and this Clio is great fun. Select the B regenerative braking and the fun is stifled slightly, as the car uses the brakes to recharge your electric range whilst on the move.
Conclusion
This fifth-generation Clio remains true to form, with a much-improved interior, new engines, a hybrid model and great safety technology.

BYD DOLPHIN
ith BYD’s blade battery technology, sharp pricing and decent range, it feels like the Dolphin should make huge waves in the Irish market. The battery powered Dolphin is a compact C-segment hatchback whose wide range of standard features and competitive price offering will likely appeal to eco-friendly Irish motorists keen to embrace lower-cost, emissions-free, all-electric motoring. Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, and powered by their highly efficient 60.4 kWh LFP Blade Battery, Dolphin boasts a range of 427km (WLTP) with a 30% to 80% fast charging speed of 29 minutes. Available in a choice of four trim levels – Active, Boost, Comfort & Design – each Dolphin comes equipped with a wide range of standard specifications tagged to a competitive price offering that – in the case of first-arrivals Comfort and Design models – begins from €29,318 after state subsidies. Combining BYD’s game-changing EV technology with an abundance of standard equipment and its playful ‘Ocean Aesthetics’ design concept, Dolphin represents what BYD says is ‘the epitome of safe, efficient and practical eco-friendly motoring, priced to make high-tech electric mobility accessible to more consumers’. Eye-catching features are its rounded profile and side silhouette resembling what its designers call ‘the graceful lines of a leaping dolphin’. Inspired also by the dolphin’s own natural characteristics, designers have given Dolphin a two-tone body available in seven colour combinations, echoing the colours inside and out to create a feeling of exclusivity. Measuring 4,290 mm long, 1,570 mm high, and 1,770 mm wide, with wing mirrors unfolded, its long 2,700 mm wheelbase and short front/rear overhangs combine to give it a more spacious appearance, optimised for space and passenger comfort. You might wonder about the quality of materials in the interior of the BYD but don’t worry as it’s all very well put together. There is also a really nice mix of materials used, and in another first for me, even the hard plastics have a textured finish to the point where they don’t look like plastic at all. Very nicely done. Inside, Dolphin has a light and airy feel with space for five occupants. Ergonomically designed sports seats and headrests are made from vegan leather. Front seats have 6-way electric adjustment for the driver and 4-way electric adjustment for the front passenger. Seats have shoulder and back support, optimised with body-hugging wings for a more comfortable, wraparound ride. Rear seats provide generous legroom for passengers. Rear seats split 60:40 allow its 345-litre boot to expand to 1,310 litres when both seats are folded flat – space sufficient to carry four standard 20-inch suitcases, enlarged by over 20 tucked-away spaces for knick-knacks and the like. One standard element is a 3.3kW external discharge ‘vehicle-to-load’ facility which can be used to charge accessories and power

BYD DOLPHIN external devices. Standard across the board is an abundance of safety and advanced driver assistance features. Cutting-edge lighting technology provides a broader beam of light to enhance visibility when driving at night, with High Beam Assist, Adaptive Front Headlights and Follow Me Home lighting as standard. All models come equipped with Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Rear Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Brake, Lane Departure Prevention and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist. Adding to the enjoyment of driving DOLPHIN is Adaptive Cruise Control and Intelligent Cruise Control. A panoramic camera gives the driver 360-degrees visibility for safe vehicle manoeuvring. Additional driver aids include Blind Spot Detection System, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Decent Control, Automatic Vehicle Hold, and Traffic Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Limit Control. The driving experience is smooth and fluid. The single-speed transmission means there is no interruption to power delivery, and the way power feeds in as you press on the accelerator starts gentle and ramps up progressively. There’s an Eco mode that dulls down throttle response, Normal mode feels, as the name suggests, pretty balanced, and Sport mode makes the accelerator more reactive but not overly aggressive. Noise is low overall. Wind and road noise start to pick up at speeds of around 80km/h and above, but while they are noticeable, they’re never too intrusive.

After taking the BYD through a series of bends on old country roads, it felt a little top-heavy (keeping in mind the battery weight is concentrated low in the chassis). The chassis’s inherent balance feels fine on well-maintained surfaces, but mid-corner bumps and broken surfaces reveal that it can get a little upset. Given the Dolphin’s positioning as an urban runabout, it’s not too hard to see why it does its best work within city and towns.
Conclusion
The BYD Dolphin gets a lot of things right. The standard features list is already a highlight, but combined with the decent driving range, pricing and the overall quality - the combination holds a lot of allure for any potential buyer.

LEXUS LBX
his Lexus LBX is now the smallest vehicle in the Lexus lineup. The LBX is presented as an entry-level introduction to the luxury vehicle market. Every Lexus model is identified by a two or three-letter acronym, derivative of the model of which it is bestowed. The LBX is no exception, standing for ‘Lexus Breakthrough Crossover.’ Interestingly, its only the second model in the brand’s expansive history to have a three-letter name. The first? The LFA, a V10-engined two-seater supercar. While the LBX can be noted for sharing its platform and underpinnings with the Toyota Yaris Cross, that’s about where the sharing ends from a user interaction point of view. It uses the same TNGA-B platform and a version of the same hybrid powertrain, but engineers say the two were developed separately. Indeed, just the powertrain, which you might assume to be exactly the same three-cylinder hybrid as in the updated Yaris, exhibits a few key differences. The LBX’s electric motor produces 9hp more than the Yaris’s, and to make sure that there’s enough juice for the motor, there’s a larger battery with one whole kWh of capacity (versus the 0.76kWh in the Yaris). The styling itself is classic Lexus with the sculpted panels, door mirrors and distinctive lighting signatures. The LBX is in no way a badge engineering job. The LBX embodies the perfect union of the marque’s instantly recognisable traits and the clear ambition to create a design that’s more relaxed in character, exuding an authentic effortless style. What’s particularly noticeable is the evident departure from Lexus’ traditional spindle grille, with the LBX featuring a sleek, frameless grille that integrates into lines of the body. Like the front, the rear of the car also exudes Lexus with the large light strip and distinctive badging making it identifiable as part of the brand’s SUV family. Lexus Ireland has announced that the new LBX compact hybrid crossover will have a starting price of €36,675. That’s for the entry-level Elegant version. If you like, you can spend a little extra and trade up to the Emotion model. Elegant trim comes as standard with the Lexus Safety Sense 3 package including pre-collision detection, pedestrian and cyclist detection, a rear-view camera, lane-trace steering, adaptive speed limiter, and traffic sign recognition. There’s also radar-guided cruise control and parking sensors front and rear.
“The LBX really shines is in its economy and manoeuvrability.”

LEXUS LBX Buyers also get dusk sensor headlights, dual-zone climate control, ambient cabin lighting, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.8inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, heated sports front seats with ‘Tahara’ leather trim, automatic high-beam headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels finished in a high-gloss dark grey. Move up to the Emotion model, and there’s perforated leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish, privacy glass, keyless entry and ignition, extra USB-C sockets in the back, wireless phone charging and a two-tone exterior paint finish with a contrast roof colour. The colour choices, are Sonic White, Sonic Copper, Sonic Chrome, Sparkling Silver, Urban Grey, Midnight Black, Ruby, Passionate Yellow and Neptune Blue. Elegant models come with pale Ammonite Sand leather upholstery inside, while Emotion models get black leather with contrast red stitching. The LBX comes with one powertrain option - a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid developing up to 136hp, with CO2 emissions of 110g/km and official fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100km. On the road, the LBX delivers a comfortable drive all around whether on smooth tarmac or on rougher road surfaces. The LBX handles really well, tempting the driver to push it around windier ro-

ads. The combination of its front mounted engine and rear mounted battery particularly assist the LBX in its road holding ability. 136hp of power and 120Nm of torque from a 1.5L hybrid assisted motor mean the car has sufficient pulling power for a family vehicle. However, where the LBX really shines is in its economy and manoeuvrability. The former seeing a claimed figure of 4.5l/100km WLTP. As standard, the LBX comes with a three-year, 100,000km manufacturer’s warranty, plus a five-year, 100,000km warranty specifically for the hybrid system, including the battery. Manufacture Warranty • 3yrs/100,000km - Manufacture Warranty • 3yrs/unlimited mileage - Surface rust/Paintwork • 12yrs/unlimited mileage- Corrosion Perforation Hybrid Warranty • 5yrs/100,000km - All Hybrid Components (Including Hybrid Battery) • Up to 15yrs/unlimited mileage Hybrid Battery Warranty once serviced with a Lexus Dealer
Conclusion
The LBX stands out as an impressive compact hybrid SUV in what is a congested segment. With an impressive resume, both the Lexus luxury styling and technology specifications justify the higher price point.

SUBARU SOLTERRA
he Solterra is Subaru’s first battery electric vehicle and was co-developed with Toyota. Aimed at those EV SUV buyers wanting a bit of off-road ability – which is pretty much Subaru’s brand ethos for its core products – the Solterra competes in the popular medium electric SUV segment. Subaru is banking on its credibility as an all-wheel drive specialist in delivering the Solterra to Irish drivers, with the new vehicle developed exclusively as an all-wheel drive model. Based on the Toyota bZ4X, it’s an electric SUV that’s here to challenge the usual suspects. It uses a new platform derived from Toyota’s excellent ‘TNGA’ architecture and it enters a fairly hotly contested part of the market. Based on Toyota’s ‘e-TNGA’ platform, the 2024 Subaru Solterra Touring is not the sportiest or most luxurious electric SUV to drive but it’s conventional and that’s why I think it’s a great first EV for buyers looking to move beyond a hybrid for their family SUV. The Toyota platform awards it good driving dynamics, a solid road feel and reasonable road noise suppression. Setting off in the Solterra is nice and simple. There is a traditional start/stop button, unlike in some EVs, and no fully-one pedal driving mode. Drivers simply pop the car in drive through the round gearknob selector, put their foot down and Subaru’s first EV picks up pace smoothly without any drama or fuss. The silent thrust of an EV is there and the power builds smoothly. Drivers can access Subaru’s off-road X-Mode in conjunction with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive to improve traction on challenging road surfaces, such as in slippery or icy weather, on steep hills, or in muddy terrain. According to Subaru, the Solterra boasts 212mm of ground clearance – which gives it more off-road capability than a lot of other EVs on the market. Around town, the Solterra rides well, soaking up potholes, speed bumps and bad roads quite well. The Solterra’s exterior design is sleek and modern, with a bold front grille and sharp lines that give it a sporty look. The Subaru Solterra features a distinctive and rugged exterior design that stays true to the brands core identity. It has a bold front fascia with a closed-off grille, aggressive front skid plate, and angular headlights. The profile is boxy and upright like a traditional SUV, with black body cladding and roof rails. From the rear, wraparound taillights and a rear skid

SUBARU SOLTERRA plate give it a sporty appearance. Overall, the exterior styling balances Subaru’s off-road heritage with a modern, electric-focused aesthetic. If the outside of the Subaru Solterra is a light restyle of the Toyota bZ4X, then the interior is a carbon copy. Other than the badge on the steering wheel there really isn’t any difference inside. The interior of the Solterra is spacious and comfortable, with room for up to five passengers. The dashboard features a large touchscreen display that provides access to the infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interior is designed with sustainability in mind, with recycled materials used wherever possible. At nearly 4.7m long, 1.86m wide and 1.65m tall, the Solterra is one of the larger models in its class. As a result, there are no real issues with passenger space. There’s certainly an ample level of room up front, even with the fairly bulky centre console taking up a chunk of space between the driver and passenger. Legroom is plentiful front and back and, even with the panoramic glass roof fitted, there’s no shortage of headroom either.
The all new Solterra comes in two options. The Limited has a 71.4kWh battery, 150kw electric motor (two 80kw electric motors) AWD comes with 18” Alloys, Subaru Safety Sense, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, Fabric Seats, Panoramic View Monitor, Heat Pump, Heated Front and Rear Seats, Keyless Access & Start. It has a range of 465km WLTP and pricing of €44,995 The Touring has a 71.4kWh, 150kw AWD includes the above plus - 20” Alloys, Leather Seats (Synthe0c), Panoramic Sunroof, Wireless Phone Charging, Harman/Kardon Audio System with Subwoofer, Electric Passenger Seat, Driver’s Seat with Memory Function. It has a range of 414km WLTP and pricing of €49,995. DC fast charging is possible up to 150kW for an 80% charge in about 30 minutes. AC charging is possible up to 7kW.
Conclusion
The Subaru Solterra is a good family SUV. It offers decent space, is relatively practical and is very comfortable, while also bringing a pleasant and predictable driving experience that should ultimately satisfy most drivers. It pitches itself as a more rugged, off-road capable EV with genuine capability and this will appeal to many.
