This case shot has a brass Bormann time fuse support plug (underplug) that is .35 inch thick and 1.25 inches wide, wider than the support plug on the previous page. The weight of the complete ball is lighter than normal due to deterioration of the exterior iron surface. The support plug has the top center hole countersunk. This spherical projectile does not have a side loading hole. This example was recovered from Selma, Alabama. The shot having been cleaned, the balls are put in. A stick with a less diameter than the fuze hole, and having a groove on each side of it, is inserted and pushed to the bottom of the chamber by working the balls aside. The shot is then placed; in a sand-bath or oven, and brought to a proper temperature to receive the sulphur, which in a melted state is poured in to fill up the interstices between the balls; the shot is allowed to cool, and the sulphur to harden, when the stick is withdrawn, and the sulphur adhering to the sides of the eye and the surface of the shot is removed.37 See pages 103-108 for information regarding the Bormann time fuse. The projectile on the left above is unfired and has four flame grooves cast into the sabot. There are no tin cross straps on either bases. It has the original faded red paint on the base of the zinc alloy cup indicating case shot. The diameter of the Dyer fuse at the top is .98 inch and has 12 threads per inch. Note: The shell version of this size weighs 7.8 pounds. The sabot on the example on the left is 1.53 inches high. The sabot is made of an alloy of two-thirds lead and one-third tin. Antimony was added by 1863. The sabot is detached on the example on the right. The shape of the mandrel that formed the bursting cavity is easily seen. This pattern has been recovered from numerous Virginia battlefields, the 1862 Shiloh battlefield, and the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg. The 3-inch Dyer case shot fired with a 1 pound service charge at 7° elevation had a range of 2,325 yards and 8 second flight time. Located under the Bormann time fuse is an iron support plug (underplug). This plug sealed the hole used to load the case shot and matrix. The soft Bormann time fuse needed support during firing so a support plug was necessary to prevent the fuse from deforming during the cannon’s discharge. A leather washer was often placed under the Bormann time fuse to help seal the fuse threads to prevent flame from the propellant charge from prematurely igniting the black powder and also prevent moisture from contaminating the powder. The wall thickness was averaged due to the off-set inner core casting. The bursting cavity was formed by inserting a mandrel into the loose case shot balls and pouring in the liquefied matrix as indicated by the lack of an auger drilling into the lead case shot. After the matrix cooled and hardened the mandrel was removed leaving the space for the black powder bursting charge.

Charles W. Smith, G. H. Babcock, Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, and Charles A. Hotchkiss, patented on April 28, 1863, United States Patent No. 38,359, an improvement employing an iron plate, to prevent the mixture of the case shot balls and matrix with the bursting charge.51 This plate enabled the case shot to be thrown forward with greater velocity when the projectile exploded. The iron square nail in the base of the Hotchkiss nose was placed into the mold to hold the sand core centered in the small nose. Notice how the bursting cavity is slightly larger as compared to the Hotchkiss on the previous page. The additional powder caused a greater dispersion of the shrapnel and case shot balls. The lead band on this unfired example is 1.87 inches wide. Hotchkiss projectiles have been recovered from numerous battlefields such as: Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Port Hudson, the Atlanta Campaign, and many Virginia battlefields. Note the tin cylindrical tube containing the bursting charge inserted through the fuse hole. This tube separated the black powder from the asphaltum matrix and case-shot to prevent contamination. This method was patented by Sylvanus Sawyer, United States Patent No. 34,041, on December 24, 1861 (see pages 117-118). The Bormann time fuse is complete with a brass Bormann support plug (underplug). The Confederates did not use the tin cylinder in their spherical case shot projectiles. Rifled Federal Parrott projectiles employed a similar method of a tin cylinder for containing the bursting charge that prevented contamination of the case shot and matrix with the black powder.
