Solving the Augusta Street traffic dilemma ASHLEY BONCIMINO | STAFF

ashley@communityjournals.com The key to avoiding traffic nightmares such as Woodruff Road is to manage traffic growth before it even starts, says Greenville Mayor Knox White. A case in point is the pending Harris Teeter grocery store development on Augusta Street, where White says neighborhood-focused development has been the city’s motto.

“There’s a limit to what you can do in terms of the road itself, so my focus has been on the development along the street and the right mix of residential and retail, making sure that high-traffic-generating businesses are discouraged,” White said.

The city has shut down developments for high traffic draws to manage congestion on Augusta Street for more than a decade, the mayor said. “You don’t want it to be a Woodruff Road where you have nonstop fast food restaurants or multiple big-box stores. I mean, that’s that worst thing that could happen. We didn’t want that to happen.”

The city is requiring Harris Teeter developers, for example, to pay the city for new sidewalks along the side of the project as a type of impact fee – a method

that has been used before in Greenville, but not for a project this large, he said.

The city is still working on details about design and neighborhood traffic impacts, he said. “We were just so sensitive, there’s so many infrastructure needs that we’re going to have to address as the result of a project this big, that we have to think outside the box and do things differently.”

Residents voiced their support for the grocery store at a neighborhood planning meeting in February, but still had concerns about too many parking spaces, ingress and egress from the shopping center and noise from deliveries, according to reports in the Upstate Business Journal.

One concern was heightened traffic impacts, which could affect residents in the surrounding streets and neighborhoods, said David Keller, who is one of the city’s seven planning commission members. “I just have this vision of Augusta turning into a mini Woodruff.”

MANAGING AUGUSTA Managing Augusta Street had its beginnings 20 years ago, when plans to widen the corridor to six lanes caused

development to halt, White said.

“We went through this period where it was a black cloud. Why would you buy, why would you fix up a house on Augusta Road or build a new house in the area if you thought it was going to be widened in the next couple of years?” he said. “Once that issue was off the table, it was an immediate impact, a positive impact of development.”

The call then was to find other ways to manage traffic, which can include reducing accidents by moving lampposts and closing down open driveways, which are also pedestrian safety measures, he said.

One tool at the city’s disposal to prevent that has been zoning, which dictates the type of developments permitted along the corridor, White said. In 2000, the city decided to downzone the entire corridor from C3 – which allows for nearly any commercial development – to C2, which is more restrictive. The result has been spacing out growth that “had a huge effect on the corridor,” the mayor said.

“We’re not against anything in particular, but we want to have the right balance,” he said. “We think office and residential along Augusta Road is im-

portant to keep Augusta Road from becoming a nonstop commercial strip.”

Instead of a 15- or 16-shop center at the corner of Faris Road and Augusta Street, for example, White said the city opted for a one-store CVS that would have far less of a traffic impact overall.

“While I’m personally not crazy abut another CVS on that corner, the alternative would have been a much more retail-intense development,” he said. “You could have put in multiple businesses, but at the same time it’s such a large site.

Oh my gosh, potentially we could have had a huge traffic generator on that site.”

Going forward, White said the city plans to focus on quality, with façade improvement plans, upgrades and renovations for existing properties.

“For the last several years, we’ve had an imbalance between very strong residential, desirable neighborhoods all around Augusta Road, but a commercial sector that has had too many businesses that were blighted, too many vacancies,” he said. “I think we’ve kind of turned the corner on that, and now we’re getting renovations, we’re getting more variety of shops and services, and that’s the best we can hope for.”

You can lower your cancer risk

If your New Year’s fervor to get healthy is already losing steam, now is a great time to give yourself a second chance.

It’s no secret that healthy lifestyle choices go hand-in-hand with lowering heart disease and diabetes risk, but how much do daily habits like diet and exercise affect your risk for cancer?

Much more than you think. Each year, roughly 589,430 Americans die of cancer. One-third of these deaths are linked to poor diet, physical inactivity and being overweight. Smoking accounts for another one-third of cancer-related deaths.

In South Carolina, an estimated 26,570 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 9,670 deaths from cancer will occur yearly. To think that two-thirds of these cancer diagnoses and deaths are linked to preventable risk factors like smoking, diet, exercise and weight control is shocking.

• Be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day.

• Limit your alcohol consumption. Men should have no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one drink per day.

“When you start a business, you don’t have a business, you have a big idea,” he said. “Often times, what you end up taking to market has nothing to do with the original idea.”

Eikenberry has served as planning coordinator for NEXT High School, a public charter school that will have a strong entrepreneurial component and take project-based learning out of simulated labs and into the real world.

When the school opens in August with Eikenberry as CEO, it won’t look the way a group of entrepreneurs at Greenville’s NEXT Innovation Center originally envisioned when they first brainstormed how to increase the

One of the first projects students will have is to help design the school’s facility, he said.

“We could build our dream facility, but there are plenty of schools built by adults,” he said. “We thought, ‘Why not have the students treat the school as a project?’ So we’ll move into a temporary facility for three years and students will participate in the design and build process. The fourth year, they’ll gradu-

Advocates say they reduce violent crime, but some researchers aren’t so sure.

clandrum@communityjournals.com Since 2010, the number of concealed weapon permit holders in South Carolina has almost doubled – jumping from nearly 128,000 five years ago to more than 251,000 in 2014.

The dramatic increase in South Carolina residents legally allowed to carry a concealed gun in public mirrors a national trend. A 2014 report from the Crime Prevention Research Center puts the number of concealed weapon permit holders in the United States at 11.1 million, up from 4.5 million in 2007.

could increase as gun-rights supporters push new legislation in 2015 that would ease restrictions in South Carolina and nationwide.

Twelve states, including South Carolina, expanded where guns may be carried in public last year.

In South Carolina, concealed weapon permit holders may now take their guns into restaurants and bars as long as they do not drink alcohol and the business owner hasn’t posted a sign prohibiting concealed weapons. North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona also expanded where guns may be carried in public to bars as well.

weapon. In addition, he has filed legislation to get rid of the state’s concealed weapon permit fee and to allow concealed weapon permits to be used as a valid ID for voting.

In addition, Lee has introduced legislation that would allow schools to offer gun safety or marksmanship courses as electives, allowing students to go to off-campus gun ranges to learn to use guns. He has likened the idea to driver’s education classes where students are taught how to drive.

John Cornyn of Texas introduced a bill earlier this month that would “treat state-issued concealed carry permits like driver’s licenses.” The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2015 would allow gun owners who have a concealed carry permit in their home state to bring their firearms in any other state with concealed carry laws.

“This bill strengthens two of our nation’s fundamental rights – the right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and states’ rights to adopt laws that are best suited for their residents,” Cornyn said in a press release. A similar bill failed in 2013.

Concealed carry is allowed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, but to what degree varies widely.

Most states require permits, although a handful do not. Some states require permit holders only to fill out an application, while others require applicants to pass a training class.

South Carolina has reciprocity with 20 states, but not neighboring Georgia.

The Palmetto State has had a concealed weapons permit law since the mid-1970s. The law then required gun owners to justify their need to carry concealed weapons, such as a store owner

If the person subsequently is found not guilty of the offense, the permit must be reinstated at no charge.

Neighbor Jack Slice told FOX21 the explosions rattle nearby homes and nerves. Three residents complained to the council in January that the range was a nuisance and a danger due to its noise and proximity to neighborhoods. Pickens County Council is due to take up the issue again on March 2.

In 1996, the law changed to allow people at least 21 years old to carry a concealed weapon with a permit unless they are convicted felons, charged with a crime where the penalty exceeds a year in prison, have a restraining order against them or have ever been committed to a mental institution.

GREENVILLE LEADS STATE In 2014, the state approved 64,412 new concealed weapon permit applications and renewals, revoked 895 permits and denied 948.

Greenville County led the state with 28,219 permits. Spartanburg County claimed 19,902; Anderson County had 15,548 and Pickens County accounted for 8,915.

Sean O’Rourke, a Furman University professor of communication studies who holds a law degree, suggested two reasons for Cornyn’s renewed constitutional carry push: Republicans now control the Senate, and there haven’t been any recent school shooting episodes.

“We haven’t had a Newtown, so there’s been no gun-control debate that always follows those types of incidents,” he said.

Some of the exploding targets offered by the firing range use two compounds: ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, which are mixed together and sold as Tannerite exploding rifle targets. The compounds are mixed and used on site.

Neighborhoods were a factor in Greenville County Council’s recent decision to vote down a rezoning request to establish a firing range on Pelham Road near Batesville Road. Councilman Jim Burns said the range would be too close to residential areas.

The exploding targets have received increased scrutiny in recent months. In Sept.

2014, The Missoulian reported that exploding targets sparked a fire in a state wildlife area that burned nearly 50 acres.

An Indiana woman filed a suit against the manufacturer of an exploding compound after she nearly lost her hand when a target shooter detonated a refrigerator and debris went flying, according to the Indianapolis Star.

John Lott, author of “More Guns, Less Crime,” said data shows violent crime rates have dropped during the time when availability of guns increased and concealed carry restrictions decreased.

But a 2005 study by the National Research Council of the National Academies said it’s impossible to determine a causal link between the passage of right-to-carry laws and crime rates. Robert Brame, a professor in the University of South Carolina department of criminology and criminal justice, said that conclusion is still valid.

Many things inform violent crime rates, he said. “Violent crime rates have been dropping since the 1990s and a lot of things have happened during that time.

It’s plausible that certain policy related to guns has had a role to play, but many other things have been going on at the same time,” he said.

Both sides on the gun ownership debate can point to research that supports their arguments, he said. “Crime is a tricky thing to study. We do much better describing crime than understanding crime.”

His bill would raise the gas tax by 10 cents by 2018, lower the state income tax by 2 percent over 10 years, eliminate the SCDOT’s sevenmember commission and have the governor appoint a secretary of transportation.

Schwartz said of Stringer’s bill.

He said the group’s biggest complaint is with the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

“DOT is dysfunctional and … folks here tonight, you saw, don’t think their money is being spent efficiently,” Schwartz told the Journal after the town hall concluded.

Schwartz advocates giving the governor’s office full control of SCDOT, which he says would make the agency more accountable to taxpayers. “We need to do away with these goofy commissions; they’re just smoke and mirrors between the taxpayers and their money,” he said.

He said he doesn’t trust the amount

SCDOT says it needs to fix the roads.

Instead, Schwartz wants to implement reforms within the agency, audit SCDOT and find out how much “is actually needed” to fix state roads.

A separate bill authored by the House Transportation Infrastructure Ad Hoc Committee would address road repairs by raising the wholesale motor fuel tax and lowering the consumer gas tax by six cents. The bill would also raise the automobile sales tax from $300 to $500 and restructure SCDOT. Schwartz called ad hoc committee bill “too confusing” and said it was another way to raise the gas tax on consumers.

Some property owners along the 1-mile stretch of Salters Road slated to be widened have agreed to give the state some right-of-way easements in exchange for enhancements they say will create a gateway to Greenville.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to widen Salters Road from Verdae Boulevard to Carolina Point Parkway/Millennium Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes, add bicycle lanes, a two-way left turn center lane, a grass medium and replace the overpass over Interstate 85.

Greenville City Council approved a participation agreement with the DOT Monday night.

Nearly 6,000 cars travel Salters Road between Verdae and Carolina Point Parkway daily, according to DOT traffic counts. A widened Salters Road has the potential to take some traffic off Woodruff Road’s most congested stretch – between Roper Mountain Road and Carolina Park Parkway.

A corridor study initiated by the city and completed in 2007 showed Woodruff Road from Interstate 85 to State 14 was at or over capacity and the stretch from Interstate 85 to Verdae Boulevard was close.

Since the study was completed, development has continued at CUICAR, Verdae, the Shops at Greenridge, the Point and Magnolia Park.

The project carries a $13.5 million price tag.

When the project was first brought up in 2008, a pool of enhancement money was available for stone-patterned concrete bridges, retaining walls and more decorative lighting fixtures. That pot of money went away, prompting property owners to agree to donate right-of-way in exchange for the enhancements city officials and business owners say will transform the bridge into a gateway into the city.

City Public Works Director Mike Murphy said a construction contract for the project could be awarded in October. The work would take 12 months to 18 months.

Last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio became the latest in a long line of potential GOP candidates to test the waters in Greenville for a presidential campaign.

Rubio stopped at the Barnes & Noble on Woodruff Road last Thursday to sign copies of his book “American Dreams.” He said how people respond to the book’s message “will give us a lot of insight of the potential for running for president.”

Rubio told reporters he would make a final decision “very soon” on a 2016 presidential race – a decision he said he is considering “very seriously.”

About 75 people showed up in Greenville to get the senator’s signature on a copy of his book. One Rubio supporter told the Florida senator, “One word: Run.” If Rubio follows that advice, he could face competition from South Carolina’s senior U.S. senator, Lindsey Graham, who has said he is looking

into a presidential run.

Rubio said Graham was a strong potential candidate with knowledge of foreign affairs.

In the latest South Carolina primary preview poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP), former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker led with 19 and 18 percent support, respectively, among Republicans in the state.

Graham tied Ben Carson for third in the poll, with 13 percent support among GOP voters in the state.

Rubio was not named in the poll.

Several at the book signing said Rubio was among their top choices for president.

“I think he’s the first serious contender my age,” said Alex Forrest, 39, of the 43-year-old senator.

Greenville is one of the five stops Rubio made on his short tour of early presidential primary states that included Iowa, Nevada, Florida and New Hampshire.

Racial profiling had nothing to do with the December tasing of an autistic black man who ran from Greenville police officers who were investigating reports of gunshots in his neighborhood, Greenville NAACP President J.M. Flemming said Tuesday.

Tario Anderson was the only person in the area where police were investigating gunshots, and officers were right to question him, Flemming said. “I don’t understand how they [police critics] make this racial profiling,” he said.

Tempers flared at a press conference last Friday after 13th Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins released the results of a SLED investigation that found Greenville police were justified in tasing Anderson after he ran and resisted arrest when they attempted to question him around midnight this past Christmas Eve. Several people at the news conference were unhappy that the police officers involved in the confrontation with the 34-year-old Anderson were cleared.

check,” said a man who identified himself as Tario’s brother to Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller, who joined Wilkins at the press conference. The brother said some police officers needed to be fired. “They need to be penalized and they need to be taught a lesson,” he said.

Wilkins said police tased Anderson after he refused to heed their commands to halt when they tried to question him about reports of gunshots near Sullivan and Burns streets. When Anderson continued to resist arrest, a police officer tased him a second time, Wilkins said.

Officers were driving on Sullivan Street when police dispatch received a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area, Miller said. The officers spotted Anderson walking down the road and tried to question him, Miller said. When he ran, they told him three times to stop or they would use a Taser, Miller said.

Anderson was tased twice before he was subdued. Previous reports said he suffered abrasions to his elbow, a knee and cheek from a fall.

Police learned immediately after the confrontation that Anderson is autistic. On Miller’s order, police dropped charges of resisting arrest and interfer-

ing with police work and initiated a review of the use of force in the incident.

Previous police reports said Anderson was carrying about $1,500 at the time of the tasing, and Miller said he notified the Department of Social Services out of concern that a person with the functional level of a five-year-old was allowed to walk the streets alone at night, especially with a large amount of money.

“He’s been walking that street for 20 years. Twenty years – and the money in his pocket was not your business, nobody else’s business,” shouted Carolyn Anderson. “I didn’t do nothing. I don’t hurt my child. I love my baby,” she said.

After the press conference ended, Paul Guy, executive director of Beyond Differences, and Ennis Fant, president of the African American Pastor Leadership Conference, held a separate news conference and said police investigating other police matters represented a conflict of interest.

Fant said he and others would contact the U.S. Justice Department to look into civil rights violations and investigate Greenville City Police practices. He also called for the creation of citizens review board with subpoena power to investigate police actions.

CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST GREENVILLE RADIO HOST

Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins dismissed criminal sexual conduct charges against radio talk show host Joshua Brett Kimbrell this week.

Kimbrell, host of the “Common Cents” radio show on Christian Talk 660 AM and 92.9 FM, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11 last October. A warrant accused him of fondling his 3-year-old son.

“Upon receiving this case from the Greenville Police Department and completing an investigation spanning almost four months, my office has determined that there is insufficient evidence to prove the elements of this crime beyond a reasonable doubt,” Wilkins said in a statement.

The charge was dismissed without prejudice.

MAN CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT

The Greenville County Sheriff ’s Office charged Greenville resident Wayne Tillman Posey Jr., 38, with inappropriately touching and sexually abusing a minor from 2002 until present. The victim was 4 years old when the abuse began, according to authorities.

Posey is charged with one count of first- Posey degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, two counts of lewd acts upon a child under 16, and four counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.

Posey is being held in the Greenville Detention Center without bond. The victim is in the care of family members, according to authorities.

THE NEWS IN BRIEF ARENA BOARD SELECTS PAUL AS GENERAL MANAGER

After nearly four months serving as interim general manager for the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville, the Greenville County Arena District named Beth Paul as permanent general manager this week.

Paul had served as assistant general manager and director of finance over the last decade. She took over after the departure of general manager Roger Newton, who resigned in November 2014.

Paul had worked at the arena in 1999 before moving to an arena job in Bridgeport, Conn. She returned to the Upstate in 2005 as the BI-LO Center’s director of finance. She has overseen two rounds of Paul recent renovation projects at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, including a concourse facelift, new roof, exterior signage and new lighting.

The Arena District Board voted to discontinue a task force that was investigating the possibility of an outside management company for the facility amid concerns about a slump in bookings in recent years.

Paul reported the arena successfully hosted the Bassmaster Classic final weigh-in last weekend, and arena event income is up over the previous year, while operating revenue is anticipated to be two percent above the current budget.

COLD SHOULDN’T HURT PEACH CROP

This month’s frigid temperatures likely won’t cause major crop losses for South Carolina’s peach growers, but experts say the cold snap could condense the bloom dates of different varieties and create more work for peach farmers.

Peach trees are in a period of dormancy and the number of “chill hours” determines when varieties will flower and can impact fruit quantity and quality.

“Being that it’s February and our normal bloom date is a month away, cold temperatures are not as detrimental as they would be in March or April,” said Clemson Extension agent Gregg Henderson in a release.

“This year is as near normal of weather for fruit trees as we could expect. What’s abnormal is if we were to get 10 days of 60-plus degree weather because that would pull the trigger on these early varieties to break dormancy initiating bud break. We’re not out of winter yet.”

Buds typically bloom in early March. A freeze like the one South Carolina is experiencing now would be more detrimental then, Henderson said.

South Carolina is second only to California in peach production, harvesting more than $64 million in peaches a year.

Consuming Fires’ three sauces, Smoked Habanero, Smoked Andouille and

Smoked Jalapeno, have ignited a wild fire for its owners.

Ron Jones of Consuming Fires started his company from a jalapeno garden.

He and his wife, Teresa Jones, planted a summer garden with jalapeno peppers and began making a variety of hot sauces in their spare time.

Upstate Forever, a nonprofit, membershipbased organization that advocates for sensible growth and conservation in the Upstate, recognized seven “conservation champions” Tuesday at its annual ForeverGreen Awards Luncheon.

Seven champion awards were handed out for significant achievements in the fields of land conservation, clean water, clean air, sustainable development, recycling, public service and volunteer work.

“We are pleased to recognize and honor these great champions,” said Executive Director Brad Wyche. “All of them have done exceptional work in making the Upstate a greener, cleaner and more sustainable region.”

CLEAR SKIES CHAMPION Winner: Dan Powell Powell, a planner for Greenville County and director of Keep Greenville County Beautiful, helped implement greenway projects and participated in the county’s efforts to improve local air quality. After his diagnosis with stage 4 lung cancer in 2014, he has redoubled his efforts to improve local air quality and continues his advocacy for more electric vehicles.

Four Upstate women will be honored next month as the Women Making History Award recipients for 2015.

Sister Dorothy Brogan, Sandi Coan, Tobi Kinsell and Anita Stevenson Magwood will be honored at a March 23 ceremony at the TD Convention Center, it was announced Wednesday afternoon at the Greenville Cultural Exchange Center.

According to bios released by Women Making History, Brogan has spent a lifetime of caring for the sick and dying.

Brogan, who entered the Sisters of Bon Secours in 1952, has cared for patients in a clinic in Ecuador, served as a chaplain in hospice home care and is now

chaplain at the St. Francis Millennium campus.

During her 16 years as executive director of Leadership Development Programs (LEAD) at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Coan impacted the lives of more than 1,800 Leadership Greenville participants, more than 300 students in Youth Leadership Greenville, countless participants in other leadership programs and residents of Greenville, the organization said.

Kinsell has spent her entire adult life encouraging young people to surpass the norm. For 10 years, Kinsell directed Furman University’s Bridges to a Brighter Future program, a college access and pre-college academic enrichment program for Greenville County high school students whose potential

Ron Demonet, managing director of Veteran Scholarships Forever (VSF), has created an endowed scholarship fund at Greenville Technical College to allow veterans and their spouses to successfully re-enter the workforce and provide for their families. The first recipient is Scott Perry, an Army veteran discharged in 2012, who hopes to become a nurse or physician’s assistant and who will also complete the college’s 11-week phlebotomy program in April.

The Greenville Humane Society recently reported notable growth in 2014. Over the year, 5,232 animals were adopted and the society was one of 87 U.S. clinics selected to receive grant funding from PetSmart Charities for public spay and neuter services. The foster program saw a 75 percent increase in volunteer hours with 21,160 volunteer hours donated. Fundraising events included the first annual Pawmetto Derby Party and the third annual dog-friendly race Mutt Strut, which raised $81,900 in 2014.

The 2015 Upstate Heart Ball on Feb. 14 was the largest Heart Ball to take place in South Carolina with 940 attendees and raised a record-breaking $700,000 to fund cardiovascular and stroke research as well as educational programs in our area. The evening honored four community survivors whose lives have been saved or improved because of the efforts of the American Heart Association: Dr. Richard Gibbons, Ann Sherard, Mae Bradberry and Mary Burton Wilkins.

clandrum@communityjournals.com Instead of trying to make the lead character of its upcoming Second Stage production multi-dimensional, the South Carolina Children’s Theatre had the opposite challenge: to make the lead character in “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” as flat as a pancake.

“It is a challenge, but I like a challenge,” said director Kim Granner.

The Greenville production opens Friday and runs for the next two weekends at the South Carolina Children’s Theatre Headquarters on Augusta Street.

One hundred tickets are available for each performance.

“The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” is a stage adaptation by Timothy Allen McDonald of the children’s book, “Flat Stanley,” written by Jeff Brown and illustrated by Scott Nash.

Stanley Lambchop, a bored-with-life 10-year-old, wants to travel the world. He gets his chance when the bulletin board above his bed falls and he wakes up flat.

That’s Granner’s first challenge: The audience sees the bulletin board fall on Stanley and sees him wake up.

“The most complicated costume is Stanley’s and creating something that makes him look flat,” Granner said.

That’s where her experience as a puppeteer comes in. The “flat” costume is just one-quarter inch thick.

It has to be something easy for Jamie Reidy, who plays the role, to climb into, so he can go on a musical adventure that has him thwarting a robbery at the Louvre in Paris, “hanging 10” off the coast of Hawaii and winging to Hollywood.

That leads to the second challenge: The performance space at the SCCT headquarters doesn’t have wings or fly space, limiting what Granner could do set-wise to show the change of locales.

“The script’s stage directions said, ‘Curtain goes up to reveal…’ But we don’t have a curtain,” she said. “The set is an old parchment mat and we’ll add pictures to the set to show the changes to locations. For instance, when Flat Stanley is at the Louvre, the paintings will talk. There will be something in each scene that lets the audience know where we are.”

But that’s not the biggest challenge, Granner said. “The toughest part is where he’s dimensional again.”

In addition to Reidy, the cast includes Ben Toledo, Lauren Wilson, Kristi Byers and Steve Griner, who is also the shows’ musical director. Choreographer is Kayla Long. The show runs about an hour with no intermission.

2. Author Jeff Brown created “Flat Stanley” at bedtime one night when his sons were young and stalling for time. One asked what would happen if the big bulletin board on the wall were to fall on his brother, and Brown said he’d wake up flat.

3. Dale Hubert, a Canadian teacher, turned the two-dimensional children’s book character into an online tool for teachers in 1995 when he created the Flat Stanley Project to promote literacy. Students would mail Flat Stanley to friends and family, asking them to treat him as a visiting guest and recount their adventures in his “journal.”

4. The original Flat Stanley Project required mailing of a paper Flat Stanley. Now, there’s an app for that.

5. Flat Stanley has scaled Mount Everest and was aboard the space shuttle Discovery. He’s been on the TV series “King of the Hill” and was aboard US Airways Flight 1549 that landed safety in the Hudson River.

clandrum@communityjournals.com Artisphere has once again been named one of the top arts festivals in the nation, and this year a record 17 local artists earned coveted spots on Artists’ Row. Artisphere 2015 is scheduled for the weekend of May 8-10.

More artists applied for a spot in this year’s festival – 995 – than ever before.

Artisphere received 282 applications its inaugural year.

“The caliber of creativity and artistry that the 2015 exhibiting artists represent is absolutely incredible, and to have them all come together in Greenville for Artisphere is something special,” said Bill Pelham, the festival’s visual arts committee chair.

In 2014, artists’ sales averaged $7,366 for a total of $920,750 in festival sales.

Artisphere is ranked seventh in Greg Lawler’s Art Fair Sourcebook, which ranks the top 600 arts shows in the country based on sales, patron demographics, organization, marketing and artist amenities. “We’ve come an amazingly long way in a short period of time,” said Executive Director Kerry Murphy.

Hallie Gillett, a Greenville watercolorist, will participate on Artists’ Row for the first time. “It’s always been a goal. I’ve been wishing and hoping, so this is a dream come true,” she said.

Gillett, who has participated in a few arts festivals, including the Dogwood Festival in Atlanta, worked as a children’s book illustrator after graduating from the Savannah School of Art and Design. Her watercolors feature the feet of fairy tale characters and hidden objects from childhood favorites.

Rob Buntin, a new impressionistic oil painter, is one of the festival’s emerging artists. He hopes his selection will open the door to additional arts festivals in the future.

MAC awards honor contributions to the arts CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com The Metropolitan Arts Council on Tuesday honored several individuals and businesses for their support of the arts.

MAC VISIONARY AWARD Kerry Murphy has led Artisphere since 2007 and has been instrumental in the fine arts festival’s ranking seventh out of 600 nationwide by Greg Lawler’s Art Fair Sourcebook. During her tenure, Murphy guided programmatic enhancements to the festival, including an expanded Kidsphere and the popular Artists of the Upstate exhibition. Prior to becoming Artisphere executive director, Murphy served as executive director of the Carolina Ballet Theatre.

MAC LIFELONG SUPPORT OF THE ARTS AWARD Steve Brandt, retired publisher of the Greenville News, has supported the arts in Greenville in various ways since 1978. He ensured the arts had a significant editorial presence in

the Greenville News and he served on the board of several arts organizations. He currently serves on the MAC Endowment for the Arts Committee.

CARL R. BLAIR AWARD FOR COMMITMENT TO ARTS EDUCATION Dr. Jon Jeffrey Grier has taught advanced placement music theory, advanced topics in music and honors music history at the Fine Arts Center for the past 27 years. Throughout his career, Grier has inspired many students to pursue their musical talents. Grier is a composer who has written songs and compositions for strings, jazz trios and vocalists.

BUSINESS AND THE ARTS PARTNERSHIP AWARDS The Greenville Health System won the TD Bank and the Arts Partnership Award for businesses with 100 or more employees. Inspiration can come from anywhere and the organizers of TEDxGreenville hope it strikes at the Kroc Center April 10 during its annual conference, dubbed “Head Vroom.”

The daylong event features local presenters telling their stories and “ideas worth spreading” in three to 15 minutes. Organizers say “Head Vroom” refers to “mental acceleration” as “ideas, concepts and questions steer you toward fresh epiphanies.”

A dozen speakers, ranging from an educator and bioengineer to artists and entrepreneurs, are scheduled to present “ideas, concepts and stories to provoke thought … confront stereotypes,” said event curator Lisa Marie Corley.

Included in the lineup are visual artist Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, genderqueer activist Ivy Hill, architecture professor Martha Skinner and bioengineer Naren Vyavahare. Throughout the day, TEDxGreenville will feature performances by musicians, poets and dancers.

Based on the larger TED (technology, entertainment and design) conference launched in 1984, TEDx events are organized in communities and feature local speakers. Many TED talk videos are published online for free viewing.

A few weeks ago, I sat in a meeting packed with Upstate residents who were concerned with Greenville’s music scene and how slowly it seemed to be evolving.

During a Q&A session at the end of the meeting, one person bemoaned the fact that there didn’t seem to be anywhere she could go after work to enjoy live, original music. I wish I’d thought to seek her out afterwards to tell her about Charles Hedgepath’s Tuesday Night Music series at Smiley’s Acoustic Café.

Hedgepath is a guitarist and songwriter whose tenure with Upstate favorites The Work is just one of dozens of projects. He’s equally adept as a sideman or bandleader, and he’s comfortable playing everything from jam-rock to bluegrass.

On any given Tuesday, you can hear multiple genres of music being played on one stage, for free.

The mixture of artists is intentional, and Hedgepath spends a great deal of time working on the series’ schedule.

“For any kind of series like this, you’ve got to have a good mix,” Hedgepath says.

“I have different people every month, so I try to stay conscious of, ‘Well, so-and-so played this week with a full band, so next week I’ll do a duo or a solo singer/songwriter, and then I’ll come back the next week and do something with bluegrass.’

That way, the people who come out will have familiarity because I’m there, but variety because the focus is on the different guests.”

Hedgepath says the series benefits both Greenville’s music scene and his own skill as a musician.

“I feel like I’ve brought some people to town who play Greenville a lot more now than they would have,” he says. “And you’ll also see combinations there that you won’t see at other places, because there are people who come by and just want to sit in. So there are nights where you can’t plan what’s going to happen.”

“It’s a just a great night,” says former Cravin’ Melon frontman Doug Jones, who’s been both onstage and part of the audience on Tuesday nights. “He can go from having a local singer/songwriter come in and jam with him to playing with [drummer] Jeff Sipe or [bassist] Shannon Hoover doing unbelievable jazz. He’s able to get these people that are a huge part of the music scene regionally or nationally, but then he also includes local people like myself.”

Two-time Grammy nominee Sipe says that, for him, the fun of the series is the chance to play with Hedgepath.

“As a musician, playing music with Charles Hedgepath is a joy, because his tone, timing and taste, which I call ‘the three T’s,’ are highly developed,” Sipe says.

When it comes to the Tuesday Night series and the Upstate music scene in general, Hedgepath’s philosophy is simple: “Everyone talks about eating local and buying local,” he says. “I think you should do the same thing with music. You should go out and support your local musicians who play at various places around the city.”

R E A L E S TAT E N E W S Commercial Markets Poised for Growth Despite Weaker Global Economy

A stronger labor market and stable U.S. economy should keep commercial real estate demand on the rise, but the pace of growth will likely be hindered by overseas weakness, according to the National Association of Realtors® quarterly commercial real estate forecast.

National office vacancy rates are forecast to slightly decrease 0.1 percent over the coming year as improved hiring increases the demand for office space. The vacancy rate for industrial space is expected to decline 0.4 percent and retail space 0.3 percent as manufacturers boost production for goods and services and consumers slightly accelerate their spending. A swath of new apartment construction coming onto the market is forecast to lead to an uptick (0.1 percent) in the multifamily vacancy rate.

Matthew Thrift, 2015 President of The Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS® and Owner and Broker-In-Charge of Humble Abodes Realty in Greenville, SC, expects commercial real estate activity to hold steady heading into the spring. “The demand for leases and new construction projects is expected to slowly climb as businesses add to their payrolls and consumers reap the benefits of cheaper gas and any accompanying wage growth from a tighter labor market,” he said. “Furthermore, multifamily housing continues to be the top-performing sector with current rental demand exceeding supply – leading to rent growth that is easily outpacing inflation in many metro areas throughout the country.”

Although economic conditions are improving at home, Thrift says weaknesses in the global economy will likely impact exports. “Sluggishness overseas alongside a strengthening U.S. dollar will widen the trade deficit and slow economic growth potential,” he said. “However, GDP is forecasted to come in around 3 percent in 2015 – the highest since the recession. Improvements in housing and commercial real estate market activity will measurably help economic growth.”

NAR’s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook1 offers overall projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas is provided by REIS Inc., a source of commercial real estate performance information.

In partnership with Deloitte and RERC Situs, NAR released an annual joint report earlier this month – Expectations & Market Realities in Real Estate 2015 – which forecasts for an expected increase in commercial real estate value and pricing in 2015.

OFFICE MARKETS Office vacancy rates are forecast to slightly decline from 15.8 percent in the first quarter to 15.7 percent in the first quarter of 2016.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates in the first quarter are Washington, D.C., at 8.7 percent; New York City, 9.0 percent; Little Rock, Ark., and Seattle at 11.5 percent; and San Francisco, at 12.0 percent.

Office rents are projected to increase 3.3 percent in 2015 and 3.6 percent next year. Net absorption of office space, which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, is likely to total 47.7 million square feet this year and 58.3 million in 2016.

INDUSTRIAL MARKETS Industrial vacancy rates are expected to fall from 8.7 percent in the first quarter to 8.3 percent in the first quarter of 2016.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 3.4 percent; Los Angeles, 3.7 percent; Miami and Palm Beach, Fla., both at 5.4 percent; and Seattle, at 5.6 percent.

Annual industrial rents should rise 3.0 percent this year and 3.1 percent in 2016. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is expected to total 102.2 million square feet in 2015 and 104.8 million square feet next year.

RETAIL MARKETS Vacancy rates in the retail market are expected to decline from 9.7 percent currently to 9.5 percent in the first quarter of 2016.

Currently, the markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, at 3.0 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., and San Jose, Calif., at 4.5 percent; Long Island, N.Y., 4.9 percent; and Orange County, Calif., at 5.0 percent.

Average retail rents are forecast to rise 2.5 percent in 2015 and 3.1 percent next year. Net absorption of retail space is likely to total 15.7 million square feet this year and jump to 20.6 million in 2016.

MULTIFAMILY MARKETS The apartment rental market should see vacancy rates slightly increase from 4.1 percent currently to 4.3 percent in the first quarter of 2016. Vacancy rates below 5 percent are generally considered a landlord’s market, with demand justifying higher rent.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are Sacramento, Calif., 2.5 percent; Orange County, Calif., 2.6 percent; Hartford, Conn., and Oakland-East Bay at 2.7 percent; and Rochester, N.Y., at 2.8 percent.

Average apartment rents are projected to rise 3.7 percent this year and 3.6 percent in 2016. Multifamily net absorption is expected to total 171,978 units in 2015 and 157,168 next year.

JUST A THOUGHT WITH DIANE IRVING

Superheroes wear red Cancer – just saying the word brings an overwhelming amount of emotions. Either you’ve had it or you know someone who has.

I realize that cancer probably existed before anyone really knew what it was.

However, I believe the disease has become increasingly widespread due to our environment.

In 2010, 8 million people died of cancer. With 13.2 million new cases in that same year, you might be shocked to know that new cases are expected to rise over the next 15 years to 22.2 million.

Why the jump? I’ve heard many theories, and honestly, no one knows for sure.

But, of course, I’d like to speculate on what the reason might be.

Recall, if you will, the movie “Erin Brockovich,” which was based on a true story about a company that contaminated a town’s nearby water source with chemicals. As a result, a massive amount of people got cancer from the groundwater. Chemicals are in everything: our food, our clothes, lotions, detergent, other cleaners. If you look at the labels in many of the foods you buy, you might note the main ingredients are chemicals with crazy names like azodicarbonamide.

So, if we’re all eating the same foods, why do some of us get cancer and some of us don’t? I think the answer is individual genetics and how our bodies deal with foreign cells. I can’t entirely blame food and our daily products because I do think stress is a huge factor, too. I know that someone who eats organic foods and lives stress-free can still get cancer. All I know is that I’d rather eat something real with nutrients, use lotions like coconut oil, and avoid chemicals in any way. What’s left is to hope for the best.

This topic hit home for me recently in the most upsetting way. My brother and his wife just had their third baby boy, Redden. He’s beautiful and happy. Not to mention hungry; he eats more than any baby I’ve ever seen. His calm demeanor is a delight for his mother who has two other bouncing sons.

A little over a month ago, my family and I learned from my brother that Redden had cysts all over his body and they were getting worse. He was born with them, but the doctor said they would go away. They didn’t. So my brother and sister-inlaw took him to the doctor. A day later, they found themselves at a cancer center in Atlanta, where they live.

As a parent, the last thing you can imagine hearing is “Your baby has cancer.”

After many tests and agonizing days of waiting for results, we found out it was neuroblastoma.

Immediately, everyone leapt into action. Family came together to help them deal with the unbelievable bad news. All I will ever remember from the hospital is tears – though beauty did show its face in disaster.

Neighbors, friends, church groups and people they didn’t know helped lift us up in a time of need. They brought food, sent cards and bought cancer-fighting clothes for him to wear. It was incredible to see the kindness that comes from a horrible situation like this.

Poor Redden spent countless days in intensive care with a tube down his throat. Not being able to eat was hard enough, but not being held in his mother’s or father’s arms would scare even the tiniest person. He has been so strong through all of this; one might even say he is the world’s first baby superhero.

Hence the new slogan, “Superheroes Wear Red,” in honor of the little guy who took on cancer by the horns in the first month of his life. Being the creative person my brother is, he created an artistic logo as a therapeutic promotion for prayers.

After a few rounds of chemo, the tumor, which took up half his tiny body, is shrinking. Little Red has had enough suffering and is on his way to recovery. Though we know his wounds will heal, his parents will always be left with a scar.
