SOUTH CAROLINA FESTIVA L NEW PLAY
AUG 202 5
From our editor
In the days following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, beauty appeared amidst the rubble of Asheville’s decimated River Arts District. Artists had begun creating public art with cinder blocks and pieces of metal inscribed with messages of hope—one of the first murals read, “Flood with Love.”
Across Western North Carolina and the Upstate, the arts community stepped up and stepped in to help with relief efforts. Arts organizations and performing spaces became drop off sites. The Peace Center in Greenville collected canned goods and the Upcountry History Museum gathered books and arts supplies for children in Western North Carolina.
Museums and galleries have displayed work by affected artists. The Spartanburg Art Museum’s recent exhibit, “Displaced: The Resilience and Resurgence of Artists Affected by Hurricane Helene.” featured moving pieces created by Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina artists. Visitors to First Presbyterian Church’s new gallery took in “Resilience: Asheville Artist Exhibit,” where they had the opportunity to buy the pieces.
As the arts community continues to respond by supporting, rebuilding and creating—we can show our support to them by taking in the shows, concerts, exhibits, and festivals we are so fortunate to have.

Artist Profile:
Cece Burnett produces dramatic paintings that engage one’s emotions through bold brush strokes and a strong use of color. New energies emerge and collide as the painting progresses. Visually, her work is about relationships with color. Emotionally, it is a response to nature, travel, conversations and the glamour that is all around us if we just pay attention. She conveys the sparkle she sees in everyday objects to the viewer. Each painting starts with a vision but the brushes, palette knives and paint evolve it into a piece of art.
