clandrum@communityjournals.com Teaching students how to play a musical instrument is nothing new for Mauldin High band director Adam Scheuch – he’s been doing it since he was a junior in high school.

Scheuch decided then that he wanted to pass along his own enjoyment Scheuch of music to the next generation. With the encouragement of his teachers, he began giving private trumpet lessons to middle school students. He soon discovered he had talent for teaching, too.

Scheuch, a 16-year veteran teacher and Mauldin High band director since 2004, is Greenville County’s Teacher of the Year. He will now compete for state Teacher of the Year honors.

Scheuch said although he learned plenty during his first year of teaching that helped shape him into the teacher he is today, the most important lesson was that all students want to be loved for who they are.

“Students participate in band for a wide variety of reasons, least of which is to become the best musician in history. The one common bond among all of the students is that they still seek the love and approval of the adults in their lives,” he wrote in his Teacher of the Year application.

In 2011, Scheuch took the Mauldin band to perform during the halftime show at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. They collected 42 instruments and contributed $450 for Roots of Music, a charity that provided needy students with free meals, academic tutoring, music lessons and transportation. Nearly all of the students served by the charity were from the areas most

“Many tears of joy were shed that night as our own students learned to be more grateful for what they have,” Scheuch wrote.

Scheuch said music is the avenue he uses to develop better human beings.

“I convince young people that they matter, that their entire team matters, that achievements only come through hard work, and that reaching goals through hard work is satisfying in and of itself,” he wrote. “I have embedded in them the need to be gracious losers and even more gracious winners, to take responsibility for their actions, and to recognize how their contributions affect those around them.”

First runner-up was David Evett, special education teacher at Tanglewood Middle; second runner-up was Wade Hampton High math teacher Grant Hunter; and third runner-up was Oakview Elementary secondgrade teacher Jake Gambrell.

Ashley Bentley, a fifth-grade teacher at Greenbrier Elementary, was named the elementary level Emerging Teacher of the Year.

Bentley uses tech- Bentley nology to motivate her students and to track progress. She uses hands-on, discovery-based instruction. She reclaimed the school’s science lab during her first year in the classroom, helping clean and organize the lab while providing the necessary supplies for all fifth-graders to engage in discovery learning.

Jessica Richardson, a Spanish teacher at Travelers Rest High, is the secondary level Emerging Teacher of the Year. She uses technology to help fill the gaps between Richardson the culture of her students and those of other countries.

In addition to her teaching role, she assists with the robotics team, Beta Club and Faculty Council. She even volunteers to sell tickets at athletic events.

The Emerging Teacher of the Year Awards is sponsored by Greenville Federal Credit Union and recognizes two second- or third-year teachers for outstanding performance. Each receives $500, a crystal award and $500 for their school.

Scheuch will now compete for the state Teacher of the Year Award.

Veterans for veterans

The bell has rung and it’s time for school. For most children, classes are back in session while others may still have a few more days to prepare. Either way it is never too late for helpful tips to start the new school year right.

They need sleep: Reestablish the bedtime routine. Start by sending your child to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until he or she is able to get at least nine hours of sleep. Stagger bedtimes for kids of different ages.

Preschoolers need at least 10 hours of sleep.

Eat a healthy breakfast: Kids who eat breakfast do better in school, are more active and eat fewer calories throughout the day. Try to have healthy breakfast food such as fruits, eggs and yogurt. Boiled eggs or lean ham sandwiches are great breakfasts that can be made ahead of time and eaten on the way to school.

Encourage involvement: Whether your child is a star football player or a chess superstar, encourage him or her to get involved in school. Extracurricular activities usually have a grade point average (GPA) minimum and promote studying. Karate and tennis are excellent activities for children with ADHD. Pack a lunch: Your child’s cafeteria lunch food may seem like the easiest lunch, but it’s not the healthiest. Instead, encourage your child to make his or her own lunch the night before.

Buy healthy and delicious sandwich ingredients – stay away from processed foods. A turkey sandwich with carrot sticks or apple slices and yogurt is a terrific lunch.

Help them plan ahead: When everything is planned the night before, your children will be less stressed in the morning. Try not to wait until the last minute to prepare for school.

Have your child go through his or her room to see which school supplies and clothes will be needed.

Turn off the TV: Encourage your child to play quiet games, do puzzles or read instead of watching television.

These activities will help ease children

With all of the negative publicity about the care veterans are receiving from the VA health system, we should pause to share some positive developments.

The Greenville Outpatient Clinic (GOPC) sees about 18,000 patient visits a year from 11,000 individually registered veterans. These patients have the benefit of being seen in the new 78,000-square-foot facility that opened in August 2013 across from the Grove Road Greenville Memorial Hospital complex.

However, the availability of a new facility is only part of the equation in providing high-quality health care for upstate veterans.

In January of this year, an enterprising VA primary care physician, Dr. Gretchen Kaneb, felt that there was an untapped opportunity to improve the VA’s outreach effort by enlisting a group of veterans to bridge the gap between the outpatient clinic and the upstate veteran community.

She established a committee called Greenville Veterans for Veterans (VfV). She felt that the credibility of the veterans would be a positive communication vehicle and a way to harness the experience and energy of the veterans to share common experiences with other local veterans.

Addressing issues proactively is one way to avoid many of the issues that have been prominent in the news. The veterans on the committee have served in both the Vietnam and Gulf wars and have background in all branches of the service. The veterans and Dr. Kaneb have been working to strike a balance between the need to be tied closely to the VA, yet be independent and objective to represent the veterans when the system does not meet their perceived expectations.

This is a new concept and each step sets its own precedent for future outreach efforts. A significant priority for the committee is to spread the word to veterans that they have a “friend in court” to help them with their issues, as

into the school routine. Make sure your child does not watch or use anything with a video screen for at least 30 minutes before bedtime. This will help them “turn off ” their brains and be able to fall asleep.

Get your children immunized: Vaccines and immunizations are required for most public schools, but call your child’s school to learn about any new vaccine requirements. Check with your family pediatrician to make sure your child is up to date.

Watch for mental health issues: Look for changes in your child’s behavior, especially if you have teenagers. Watch for eating disorders or depression and talk to your child if you notice something unusual or different.

Stay safe: Make sure your child has the proper personal protective equipment, like helmets, while riding bikes, scooters, Rollerblades, etc.

Wrist guards are needed for scooters, Rollerblades and skateboards. If your child commutes, practice the route to and from school. Reinforce the rules on the road and remind them about not talking to strangers. Make sure your young children can recite your name, phone number, and their home address in case of an emergency.

Be enthusiastic: Many kids are nervous about going back to school, so be enthusiastic about your kids’ return. Talk to your kids about their day.

We are committed to establishing an enjoyable and wholesome environment allowing veterans to effectively partner with the VA and surrounding Upstate community in safe activities that foster the mental and physical health of the veteran.”

The VfV team is committed to Upstate veterans and wants our effort to be a model for how to avoid frustrations in working with large organizations like the Veterans Administration.

Our veterans earned this and deserve the highest level of care and service.

According to a social experiment conducted as part of the National Honesty Index, Honest Tea beverage company set up unmanned, self-serve stations on Greenville’s North Main Street and asked takers to pay $1 for a cold beverage on the honor system.

Between July 16 and Aug. 12, the Honest beverages were offered in 60 locations in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Surveyors logged who paid and who simply took the beverage, noting gender and hair color as well. The survey also included a digital component this year, asking users to post an inspirational quote on their Facebook walls in exchange for a coupon.

According to the results, Greenville residents were 96 percent honest in 2014, up from 94 percent honest in 2013. The survey ranks Greenville as one of the fifth most honest cities in the nation, along with nine others.

Greenville was part of the national trend, with an increase from 92 percent of Americans being honest in 2013 to 95 percent in 2014.

Notable results included Honolulu residents who were 100 percent honest for two years running and Washington, D.C.’s honesty increasing 16 percent in one year.

Women were narrowly more honest (95 percent) than men (93 percent) this year and blondes came out as the most honest hair color with 95 percent.

U.S. team member Lance Footer is another local who will be competing, hurtling around the course on a tandem bicycle with his pilot, Shawn Olin. Footer, 47, is visually impaired and said the sort of teamwork needed to compete with a partner on your bike requires “total confidence.”

“It is basically a marriage,” he said.

Riding the tandem is like “driving down the road in a car and you’re in the driver’s seat and the passenger is steering,” he said. Strong communication between teammates is crucial to navigating the course: Olin will count down an approach to a curve, giving Footer up-to-thesecond information.

Footer counts himself lucky to have a fellow rider willing to compete alongside him. “It takes a special person to help a visually impaired person on a bike,” he said.

This is Footer’s second year in cycling, a sport he was inspired to try after spotting Tour de France veteran George Hincapie on rides past Footer’s Tigerville home.

“Having him live here and seeing him on the road is such an inspiration for me,” Footer said.

He also credits the sport for helping him shed more than 60 pounds – “and now I’m on Team USA.” Footer has won two national championships, one on the track and one on the road, in less than two years. Footer and Olin pedal along the course at speeds up to 40 to 50 miles per hour and finished third in the Para-cycling Open in 2013.

The team also finished second in the world track competition.

This is the first time the U.S. team has fielded two tandem cyclists, and Footer expects competition to be fierce.

“The best of the world will be here,” he said. “It’s a pretty neat thing to have [the competition] in Greenville and pretty neat to represent Greenville, being that I’ve lived here more than 20 years.”

Aaron Trent is one of the local athletes showcasing his talent on the U.S. Paracycling team. Also a track cyclist, Trent will be competing in the road races on his modified bicycle that features hand controls completely on the right side.

The 28-year-old has cerebral palsy that affects his left arm and leg, and modified his Cannondale himself to move the shifter and brake controls to the right. His track bike (for indoor racing) is a standard competition track bike, with no brakes or gears.

Trent got his first bike at age 21 and has competed in world championships and other Paralympic qualifying events, placing in multiple races and participating in the 2009 World Championships.

He spent several years at the Olympic training center as a full-time professional athlete. This month’s event is his

Next week, the cyclist population in the Upstate will swell as more than 350 athletes from 40 nations converge on Greenville for the 2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships held Aug. 28-Sept. 1.

Awarded to Greenville in 2012, the international competition is a qualifying event for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The United States announced its championship team in July, which features 44 athletes who will compete. Four of those competed in the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Winter Games.

The U.S. is fielding one of the strongest and most-decorated teams to date, said Ian Lawless, Team USA’s director of high-performance paralympic cycling. Many arrived early for a training camp in Travelers Rest.

Competing athletes use adaptive bicycles, tandem bikes, tricycles or hand-cycles. Competition is open to athletes who ride with an amputation or limb loss, are visually impaired, use wheelchairs or have brain injury, cerebral palsy or stroke.

The Columbia native has lived in Greenville for the past few years, dividing his time between work as a retirement planner and competing in cycling events, both paracycling and able-bodied races. A member of the Roger C. Peace para-cycling team, he says he’s excited about competing on the U.S. team and on home turf.

“Representing a country in a World Championship is awesome,” he said.

He’s hoping competing in his hometown will prove an advantage: He can sleep in his own bed the night before competition, and family and friends can cheer him on. Spectators really do contribute to the action, he says.

“The more people who come out and cheer, the better the racing is,” he said.

All that ended when he was hit by a truck at 9 years old, an accident that shattered his skull and forced the removal of part of his cerebellum. “I spent my 10th birthday in a coma,” he said.

Boyle wasn’t expected to live. After emerging from the coma, he was only able to move his right index finger.

He spent months in rehabilitation and “worked through hell” to walk on his own again after relearning to swallow, speak and eat. He began to swim, first as therapy and recreation, later joining the local swim team in Connecticut.

After moving to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Boyle took part in its “beyond therapy” program, spending many hours in the gym or pool and later competing on the Shepherd Sharks swim team.

When he received a hand-cycle for being the center’s most motivated patient, “I thought this is cycling for me now.” At his first race in Anderson, “I did terribly in it, but met my current coach.”

When Boyle learned about a three-wheeled bike option, he began to believe he could “cycle the way I really want to again.” The trike, as Boyle calls its, is fashioned from a standard racing frame, and the rear wheel is replaced with an adaptor for stability.

Boyle began competing on the trike in 2012, participating in the national championships and medaling in silver and bronze. He is now a member of Team Roger C. Peace and competed in the 2013 Para-cycling Open in Greenville.

In the national competition in 2013, he won the road race and placed second in the time trial.

“That is when the gates really opened for me. That got me the recognition of the national team and I was selected to go to Italy and Spain,” he said. He finished first in both events at the national competition in July.

In the face of this month’s international races, Boyle

His next goal? “Rio de Janeiro in 2016.”

Multiple speakers voiced concern to County Council Tuesday night about whether patients would get a choice of hospital to be transported to if a health system, specifically Greenville Health System (GHS), were tasked with operating the county EMS. Much of the discussion at Tuesday night’s Greenville County Council meeting focused on the county’s analysis of its emergency medical service (EMS) and addressing residents’ concerns about changes to the county-provided service, including possible takeover by a health care system.

Bon Secours St. Francis CEO Mark Nantz spoke during public comment and reiterated his position that St. Francis had been left out of any discussion over the last several years about the future of the county’s EMS. Nantz has advocated for a three-way partnership between St. Francis, GHS and the county.

“Innovation is most likely to occur when all stakeholders are given a chance to participate,” he said. “We strongly believe a small group of individuals acting in private should not be allowed to take action to limit that [patient] choice.”

Nantz called on the council to use its influence to insist that county management, GHS and St. Francis work together to shape the EMS. Several other residents spoke on the EMS service and emphasized the need for consideration of all health systems involved.

County Administrator Joe Kernell countered Nantz, saying that representatives of both health systems had been consulted in the EMS discussions.

“There is nothing down on paper as of yet, we’re currently looking at options… It’s not going to happen tomorrow,” Kernell said. “I want to make something very, very clear. Choice will be included – choice has always been included. We take patients where they want to go. That will not change.”

When options for EMS are developed, Kernell said he will present them to County Council. “We purposefully

walked down this path very deliberately,” he said. According to state law, Kernell has the authority to take bids for EMS under normal procurement procedures.

Councilman Jim Burns said he and other council members have received roughly two reams’ worth of paper in letters on the EMS issue, many from St. Francis’ staff. He said he wanted council to discuss EMS. “I think we are all of the mindset in coming up with the best EMS system possible for the citizens,” Burns said.

He called for a public dialogue, saying the council should “serve as a uniting effort for the best possible EMS service for the citizens rather than someone trying to make choices between various systems in our community.”

Council members Xanthene Norris, Lynn Ballard and Lottie Gibson joined Burns in calling for open communication.

Gibson said the controversy is a result of council’s standing committees not taking up the issues. “This very EMS thing can divide our community…

I hope we can come together in the Committee of the Whole to discuss it and send it to the committee and let the people come and speak.”

Council fell short of sending the matter to a committee, with a vote to suspend the rules to make a motion failing. Norris assured attendees that the county provided the service and “we want to make sure it’s an equitable and a fair service.”

Councilwoman Liz Seman said, “I think we as council fill a very hard role to balance our government without staying in the weeds of everyday business.”

She cautioned against an “us vs. them” stance when it comes to the county administration. “We can get on a slippery slope of all 12 of us serving as negotiators or all 12 of us picking out vendors.”

Councilman Sid Cates said, “I am for trying to find a way to be fair and yet to save the county and taxpayers money.

And if it comes out to be an unpopular type of situation, so be it. I’m really for looking at all options.”

Greenville County Council is scheduled to meet again on Sept. 2, 6 p.m., at County Square, 301 University Ridge, Greenville.

A necropsy performed Wednesday on the stillborn calf born to the zoo’s giraffe Autumn early that morning found “a few enlarged lymph nodes and a few abnormities in the placenta,” zoo officials said Wednesday.

Possible causes of the stillbirth include a difficult birth, premature separation of the placenta and infection, said Dr. Heather Miller, Greenville Zoo deputy administrator for animal health.

As thousands waited expectantly for Autumn, the Greenville Zoo’s Masai giraffe, to give birth, things took a wrong turn in the early hours Wednesday morning.

Autumn was in full labor when staff arrived on site around 3 a.m., and they immediately knew something “was not quite right” when the calf began coming out hind feet first, said Jeff Bullock, Greenville Zoo director.

Zoo officials took down the live Giraffe Cam as they tried to assist in the birth. The male calf was delivered around 3:25 a.m. and showed no signs of life at the time, with no heartbeat and no breathing, he said.

Autumn was monitored regularly and was still within her “birthing window,” Miller said, adding there were signs of activity from the calf as late as Tuesday afternoon.

Calves are normally born headfirst, in a diving-like position, but some have been born in a malposition and have done well.

Stillbirths in giraffes are not common, occurring in only 5 to 10 percent of births, Miller said.

Additional tests are currently being submitted and they hope to have those results back in the next few weeks, she said.

The attention now has turned to Autumn, and “right now she is doing well,” Miller said. Autumn will be kept separated for a while from the Greenville Zoo’s male giraffe, Walter, and their offspring, Kiko, both of whom are keeping a close watch on Autumn from nearby stalls.

Bullock said while it’s up to the Species Survival program, it’s likely that Autumn and Walter will breed again.

At a press conference Wednesday, Bullock said “it’s been a tough year for zoo staff ” and thanked the community for its “outpouring of sympathy and concern for their staff.”

Students who witness bullying at Greenville County schools have a new way to report it.

Instances of bullying, harassment and intimidation may be anonymously reported through the district’s new bullying hotline – 864-45BULLY – by email at quicktip@greenville.k12.sc.us, or through an electronic form on the school district’s website.

More than 70 percent of students have witnessed bullying at school, according to the StopBullying.gov website.

While bullying is nothing new, bullying today takes many forms beyond the stereotypical schoolyard bully extorting younger and weaker classmates for their lunch money.

For boys, bullying is often physical.

Girls typically take a more verbal and social approach, experts say. The Inter-

net now makes it possible for bullies to do their damage from miles away and at any time, no longer limited to the playground, the bus stop or school hallways or bathrooms during class changes.

Twenty percent of high school-aged students in South Carolina reported they were bullied at school during 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Nearly 14 percent of the state’s high school students reported being electronically bullied during the 12 months before the survey. Thirty percent of

middle- and high school-aged children will bully or be bullied this year, according to StopBullying.gov.

School district officials said all reports, whether of bullying or another topic, will be investigated promptly, thoroughly and confidentially. The investigation will include “appropriate steps to determine what occurred and to take actions to end the harassment, intimidation or bullying and prevent it from occurring again.”

District policy prohibits all forms of bullying, discrimination, harassment or intimidation.

Two SC Mentor Network employees have been charged in a vulnerable adult case. Patsy Denise Robinson, 50, of Laurens County was arrested and charged with three counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult. Clarence Willie Callie Dillard, 47, was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to report the abuse of a vulnerable adult.

In May, the Greenville County Sheriff ’s Office Family Violence Unit received a report from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Robinson Division requesting an investigation into the alleged abuse of two vulnerable adults in the care of the SC Mentor Network in Greenville County.

According to the Sheriff ’s Office report, an investigation found that three victims were physically abused and one of the victims was sprayed with pepper spray, between March 2014 and May 2014 at the Bonnie Woods facility located at 155 Bonnie Woods Drive.

Dillard Robert Fulmer and Charles Burgess are both headed to a Pickens County court on Monday in conjunction with the shooting of Clarence Robinson in December 2012.

Both Fulmer and Burgess were arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and petty larceny.

The two allegedly broke into Robinson’s home on Angie Lane in Pickens on Dec. 19, 2012 and shot Robinson in the leg and shoulder while attempting to rob the home.

A prostitution sting conducted by the vice and narcotics division of the Greenville Police Department last week netted 59 arrests. Deputies served nine outstanding warrants and seized $4,397 in cash. Officers also seized drugs and a firearm as part of the sting.

County Council hears concerns about helicopter exercises APRIL A. MORRIS | STAFF

amorris@communityjournals.com Greenville County residents voiced concerns to County Council Tuesday about South Carolina Army National Guard helicopter training exercises at Donaldson Center (SCTAC).

Residents and Donaldson neighbors said they are anxious about training exercises in which twin-engine Chinook helicopters lift and carry large concrete blocks between locations in the Upstate.

Capt. Chris Jones of the SC National Guard gave council members an update on the Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF) at Donaldson, which currently houses 10 helicopters (six CH-47D/F Chinooks and four UH-72A Lakotas) and employs 57.

The facility had moved from McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Columbia.

According to a National Guard environmental assessment published in June, the training exercises would involve helicopters lifting concrete blocks up to 25,000 pounds in a sling and transporting them between Donaldson Airport and airports in Anderson, Greenwood Oconee and Pickens coun-

ties. The exercises currently involve transport between Donaldson Airport and Pickens County Airport.

Jones said (contrary to the assessment) that the helicopters would not be flying large concrete blocks over populated areas, but through national forests, including Sumter National Forest and the DuPont State Recreational Forest.

“There will be one block at the Donaldson Center, but that would not be flown around in the traffic pattern. It will be what is called an elevator drill… up to 50 or 100 feet [over a closed runway],” Jones told the council.

In order not to tax the helicopters, the loads will be approximately 15,000 pounds, not 25,000, he said.

An average of 15 weekly flights can involve multiple trips back to Donaldson, Jones said. According to the study, the SC Air National Guard proposes to conduct an annual maximum of 500 low-level helicopter training exercises operations and an annual maximum of 300 sling load-training exercises.

clandrum@communityjournals.com DURING A TOUR of a new friend’s yard that had been edibly landscaped, Aaron and Susan von Frank spotted a shrub-like plant with brown, papery husks.

Inside were yellow berries. They popped one into their mouths and got a burst of pineapple-like flavor, a flavor they had never tasted in a berry before.

“That really changed everything,” said Aaron von Frank, who remembers wondering why everybody didn’t grow ground cherries and why they weren’t available in grocery stores.

It was then that the von Franks decided they, too, wanted to have a garden comprised of unique varieties of vegetables organically grown from heirloom seeds. Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherries have been one of their staples.

Now, years later, the von Franks have

started GrowJourney, an organic heirloom seeds-of-the-month club that provides five unique, seasonal varieties of heirloom seeds chosen based on their flavor, hardiness and beauty.

In addition, GrowJourney provides in-depth growing guides and example garden plans. It also provides instructions on saving seeds. The couple works with master gardener and naturalist Eliza Lord.

“When you look at seed catalogs, there are a thousand seed varieties and it is so confusing. For a beginning gardener, choice is their worst enemy,” von Frank said. “We pick five seeds a month.

It’s like gardening training wheels, essentially.”

The von Franks made their share of mistakes at the beginning of their gardening journey.

“The very first year I grew from seed, I bought seed trays and followed the directions carefully. Everything died,” said Susan von Frank. “I was talking to a friend later who said it was so easy to start from seed. I felt even worse.”

She planted crops at the wrong time of year, too.

“It’s a matter of when to grow and what to grow,” she said. “We want to help people to be successful.”

But now, their edible landscape yields fruit and produce year-round and in quantities large enough to share with others.

“We just want to make it so stupid simple,” said Aaron von Frank. They get seeds from certified organic farms or growers.

that our seeds come from a farm that is doing things right. That means improving soil health and not using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides,” he said.

They define “heirloom seed” as a naturally bred open-pollinated variety that can be passed down to future generations and can be used to breed new varieties.

The von Franks say that plants grown from organic seeds and grown organically are stronger and healthier.

In the three months the seed-of-themonth club has existed, subscribers have received seeds for lemon cucumbers, red burgundy okra, white Russian kale, purple peacock sprouting broccoli, Parisian carrots, burgundy bush beans and ronde de nice squash, a French zucchini, among others.

Each month, the packet includes two smaller packets for members to share with others. An important criteria is how unusual the variety is and the rich history behind it.

“GrowJourney is not all about your grow journey, but the seed’s grow journey as well. We think there’s a shared responsibility to preserve the heirloom library and breeding new varieties,” Aaron von Frank said. “The problem now is we’ve destroyed the library and nobody is writing new books.”

GrowJourney has members in 15 states from Oregon and California to Minnesota and the Carolinas – areas that have distinctively different growing seasons.

“The varieties we choose can be grown anywhere in the country at some point during the year,” Susan von Frank said. “Some of the varieties can grow in temperatures as low as 10 degrees.”

They started the business because they wanted to have an impact at the grass-roots level.

“Ultimately, we’re not in it for the money, the Ferraris and that BS,” he said. “We don’t need a big house. Our motive is not economic in nature, it’s more trying to do something good.”

This summer, Greenville resident Marvin Brinn and two other sailors embarked on a multi-week, trans-Atlantic sailboat journey. The trio traveled up the East Coast and spent three weeks on the open ocean.

Making the journey from the U.S. to the U.K. is something he always wanted to do, said Brinn, who has been sailing since 1975. Brinn connected with captain Tom Trump of Virginia and Don Olive of South Carolina through an online matching service of sorts, which features “crew available/crew wanted” listings.

Brinn has a sailboat docked at Lake Hartwell, and has been a member of the Western Carolina Sailing Club in Anderson since the Brooklyn native came to the area more than 20 years ago.

preparing the 35-foot Southern Cross boat dubbed “Cape Doctor.” A boat of that size is on the small side for the 3,500-mile trans-Atlantic voyage, Brinn admits, but “it fared well.”

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Because of the boat’s size, provisions and equipment had to be calculated carefully, Brinn said. With no refrigeration on the boat and fresh produce offering a limited shelf life, “we got about $900 of canned food,” he said.

The crew, made up of Brinn, who is a former teacher and engineer; Trump, a retired software developer; and Olive, a physics professor, worked to estimate water usage and plot a cold-water route.

“That meant we had to look out for icebergs,” said Brinn.

After diligent preparation, the voyage began on June 5 with a departure from Edgewater, Md. The trio hopped along the East Coast before striking off into the ocean at Nova Scotia on June 27. They arrived in England on July 18.

Cape Doctor traveled at roughly 8 mph and averaged 125 miles each day, using the sails about 99 percent of the time, Brinn said.

NOT A VACATION

Throughout the trip, instruments had to be monitored, equipment checked and every crew member had to watch out for potential hazards. A loose screw that went untightened could fall out, roll down to the bottom of the hull and clog the bilge pump, he said.

The crew took turns sleeping and being on watch, with one pulling the night shift Don Olive, Marvin Brinn and captain Tom Trump who completed alone in the cockpit, he said.

“You don’t want to see another boat,” he said, especially at night.

As for excitement, Brinn recalls one night off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, when the Cape Doctor encountered several boats without ID signals.

“It was an unauthorized fishing fleet,” he said, “If we got too close to them, we would have been in trouble.”

One particularly rough stretch included 12-foot swells where the boat would crest one wave and bang into the trough of the next, Brinn remembered.

Though it was an adventure he had worked toward, “this was no vacation.

The trip offered plenty of time for boredom (and to read four books), Brinn said, but also time to think. With ocean all around, “You’ve never felt so much alive in your life… and you’ve also never felt so mortal. The beauty of the ocean, it’s a very spiritual thing.”

Many times the isolation left him “sitting in the cockpit feeling like an astronaut,” Brinn said. At night, he could hear (but not see) the water going past the hull of the boat. Then, through the darkness, bioluminescent plankton lit up and created a halo of light around the boat’s hull. “Your heart and soul is filled with the beauty of the whole experience.”

RESTORED FAITH

Highlighting the trip were the people they met along the way, he said. In Maryland, they danced with a waitress early in the morning and met some people in Manhattan who offered them a place to spend the night. Right before departure from Halifax, the captain lost his wallet and within a few hours, the entire town was helping with the search. One woman even offered her car for them to drive around to search, he said.

When the crew got lost near the final destination, overshooting Falmouth in Cornwall and ending up in the village of Mylor, the locals were very welcoming, with one shopkeeper offering Brinn a ride back to the boat in his own dinghy.

“It’s changed my outlook on people,” he said. “Now I smile more because I know they’re basically good inside.

Washington Center teachers began the new school year with learning projects thanks to the generosity of the PTA. Twenty-four teacher grants were financed affording the students creative educational activities and innovations. Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative and Blue Ridge Security Solutions announced that the 17th annual Blue Ridge Fest raised a total of $172,000 to benefit local nonprofit organizations in Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties. Debbie Jo Forbes isn’t a worldclass cyclist, but she can relate in some way to what participants in next weekend’s 2014 Para-cycling Road World Championships have been through.

Each of the athletes competing in Greenville have overcome adversity – the loss of limbs during accidents, a traumatic brain injury or some other type of physical challenge such as a visual impairment or cerebral palsy.

Forbes, too, has had to overcome challenges after suffering a stroke.

She’s one of seven patients in the Greenville Health System’s Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital’s downtown outpatient program at the West End Co-op who are making special medallions for the Para-cycling World Championships.

“We talk about going from something bad to something good to something great,” said Kimbo Bridges, an occupational therapist and supervisor of the West End Co-op.

The West End Co-op is a unique program that allows people who have acquired brain injuries or strokes to receive rehabilitation through employment. Participants in the program make jewelry and other artwork, bake cookies and make promotional items such as foam fingers. Those are sold and the money put back into the program.

Forbes said she hadn’t done art before she came to the West End Co-op.

Forbes had worked for 41 years as a neonatal nurse practitioner when she started to have headaches and her blood pressure became really low. She felt really horrible and called her daughter to come get her. Her daughter made her go to the emergency room instead.

That night, she had a stroke in the hospital.

“It was the ideal place to have it,” said Forbes, who said she woke up a week and a half later. She had trouble walking and talking. She still has problems with short-term memory.

“I can’t be a nurse now so this makes me feel like I can do something,” she said. “I never tried to do this art stuff before.”

The medallions, which feature a tree made up of bicycles, are all made by hand.

Forbes cuts one of the patterns out of a piece of paper. She sprays water on the medallion and then sticks the paper onto the piece of metal, carefully making sure that it is affixed in the right spot.

She takes a household iron and smooths the image onto the metal.

After it cools, she rubs the paper off to reveal the design. “That’s exciting,” she says.

“It’s therapeutic for me even now.

It stretches your abilities and gives you a sense of accomplishment.”

The last step is to patina the medallion.

Each of the seven patients is working on the project for a different therapeutic reason. Forbes is working on her fine motor skills and memory.

Another is working on paying attention to detail and problem-solving.

“Everything has a cognitive component,” Forbes said. “It takes a lot of cognition to do some of these

projects, but it’s a way they can help themselves and give back at the same time.”

Melissa Bodiford began having seizures when she was 15 years old. When she was 16, she had a tumor removed from her left temporal lobe.

She went to Clemson and earned a psychology degree. Now, she’s 24 and is a West End Co-op employee who does neurocognitive evaluations for

the program.

clandrum@communityjournals.com For Rusted Root frontman Michael Glabicki, being on stage is just as thrilling today as it was during the band’s first concert nearly a quarter of a century ago.

“Memory loss makes every night seem like our first gig,” Glabicki said.

“No, seriously, we just try to live in the moment. It’s been nearly 25 years, but every night we’re still excited to see where it goes.”

The group, which formed in Pittsburgh in 1990, is best Rusted Root known for the single “Send Me on My Way,” a Top 40 hit that was featured in the 1996 film “Matilda,” the 2002 Oscar-nominated animated comedy “Ice Age,” and several television shows and ad campaigns.

Rusted Root is promoting “The Movement,” a 2012 album that was fan-funded, on its current tour that will make a stop at the Peace Center’s TD Amphitheatre on Aug. 29. Glabicki calls it a “career record.”

“It is a culmination of everything we have learned, or tried to learn, over our entire career,” he said.

The Greenville concert will feature

three songs from “The Movement,” some of the band’s old stuff and four or five songs off a new album, the band’s eighth studio recording, that is expected to be released next spring or summer during the band’s 25th year.

Glabicki said each show is unique because of the audience.

“The audience is communicating with us all the time in everything we

do,” he said. “The music is set up to invite and we use the energy of the audience. When you can tune into the audience, you walk into a new world.”

A photographer has about 15 minutes for the entire process. Prints can be made from the glass plate negative.

When Nixon was in high school, he received a book about American photographer Minor White. Nixon realized then that photography was more than a documentary medium and that it could be an integral part of a person’s life as an avenue of self-expression.

He attended Sierra Nevada College in the Lake Tahoe region and then studied photography at Rockport College, now known as Maine Media College.

Nixon now lives in Asheville.

Forget the digital age and its increasingly high-tech cameras that provide instant gratification thanks to an LCD screen on their backs.

Nixon, a Spartanburg native, prefers to work in a process that remains virtually unchanged since it was popular with photographers in the 1850s to 1880s.

Nixon uses the wet-plate collodion process, a method that forces him to turn his car into his darkroom while he’s out shooting in the field. That’s because the glass-plate negatives he uses have to be prepared, exposed and developed on-site while the materials are moist, or the plates will cease to be light-sensitive.

‘Every performance makes you better’ Guitarist Matthew Kay takes career in his own hands Initially, when I spoke with guitarist Matthew Kay, I was interested in doing a piece about a “working musician” similar to a story I did about singer/guitarist Charles Hedgepath a year or so ago. The plan was to find out how someone who’s decided to pursue music as a profession makes their living day-to-day.

But the 33-year-old Upstate resident, who’s been playing for 18 years, mentioned part of his work schedule that was interesting enough to change my perspective on this story.

Quite simply, Kay decided to take a large portion of his career in his own hands, headed over to the Spartanburg location of Blues Boulevard (located at 99 S. Church St.), and offered to fill some spots on their concert calendar.

More specifically, he offered to fill just about all of them.

“I basically approached them and said, ‘I will do as many gigs as you need,’ Kay says. “I told them, ‘I’ll work with you on the price as long as we can book the gigs and I can play with the musicians I really want to play with.’ I just took a bunch of gigs so they didn’t have to worry about booking those dates. Sometimes I give them to other people, and sometimes I keep them; it just depends on who I can get to play with that night.”

Each of Kay’s shows mixes genres and musicians, ranging from some of his students (teaching guitar lessons is another one of his jobs) to players he admires, like guitarist Corey McDaniel, bassist Joe Jones and drummer Jack Ryan. The shows include an acoustic guitar duo, a modern experimental jazz ensemble, and a group called Matt Kay’s Hustle that combines advanced jazz and hip-hop. Kay has even begun playing shows at the Greenville location of Blues Boulevard (located at 300 River St.), as well.

“They’re trying to create a jazz scene in Spartanburg [at Blues Boulevard],” Kay says, “And I’ve studied jazz for so long, but I’ve never really got a chance to apply what I’ve learned, because there are so many great jazz players in the Upstate that getting a gig could be like getting hit by lightning. So now, I have all these gigs, and I have a chance to work on performance, band leading, and learning all the ins and outs of working with band members and bands.”

Committing himself to this kind of schedule, especially with a day job, one child and another on the way, was a big step, but Kay says he did it in the name of becoming a better musician.

“Every performance makes you better,” he says. “You could have very little knowledge of jazz, but if you perform it often, you will excel, unlike someone with a lot of knowledge and not a lot of performance experience.

“Once you learn how a song sounds when it’s performed in front of an audience, then you can trust the song, and then you can get into it and discover who you are.

Without an audience, there’s nothing. The audience is the most important part.”

As far as choosing the other musicians for his various projects, Kay says he looks for the same level of dedication he has.

“Mostly, it’s people that I can tell really want to make an impact,” he says.

“They’re very motivated to do whatever it takes for them to reach another level.

That’s what everyone’s going for. They have the knowledge and talent to do it. I want someone who will come into the band and say, ‘I’m committed to the music, and to expressing myself. And I’m committed to letting the rest of the band express themselves.’ Those are the people I want to play with for a long time.”

R E A L E S TAT E N E W S Home-Price Gains Decelerate in Many Metro Areas during 2nd Quarter

Home-price growth continued to moderate in many metropolitan areas in the second quarter and national year-over-year price appreciation is now at its slowest pace since 2012, according to the latest quarterly report by the National Association of Realtors®.

The median existing single-family home price increased in 71 percent of measured markets1, with 122 out of 173 metropolitan statistical areas2(MSAs) showing gains based on closings in the second quarter compared with the second quarter of 2013. Forty-seven areas (27 percent) recorded lower median prices from a year earlier.

There were fewer rising markets in the second quarter compared to the first quarter, when price increases were recorded in 74 percent of metro areas. Furthermore, 19 areas in the second quarter (11 percent) had double-digit increases, a sharp decrease from the 37 areas last quarter and the overall average of 43 areas since the second quarter of 2013.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, says price increases are balancing out to the benefit for both buyers and sellers. “National median home prices began their most recent rise during the first quarter of 2012 but had climbed to unsustainable levels given the current pace of inflation and wage growth,” he said. “At this slower but healthier rate, homeowners can continue steadily building equity. Meanwhile, for buyers, increased supply with moderate price gains is giving them better opportunities to choose.”

The national median existing single-family home price in the second quarter was $212,400, up 4.4 percent from the second quarter of 2013 ($203,400). The median price during the first quarter of 2014 rose 8.3 percent from a year earlier.

Yun adds that despite the stabilization in price growth, sharp increases still exist in some markets and are impacting sales, notably on the West Coast where inventory shortages are more prevalent.

“New construction for ownership housing and rentals is needed to alleviate price and rent pressures and accommodate their growing populations,” he said.

Total existing-home sales,3 including single-family and condo, increased 5.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.87 million in the second quarter from 4.60 million in the first quarter, but are 4.5 percent below the 5.10 million pace during the second quarter of 2013.

Distressed homes4 – foreclosures and short sales generally sold at discount – accounted for 12 percent of second quarter sales, down from 17 percent a year ago. “Fewer distressed sales will help diminish appraisal problems,” adds Yun. According to Freddie Mac, the national average commitment rate on a 30-year conventional fixedrate mortgage fell each month during the second quarter to an overall average rate of 4.23 percent, down from 4.36 percent during the first quarter of the year. They were 3.70 percent in the second quarter of 2013.

Lower interest rates and a slight rise (0.7 percent) in the national family median income ($64,751) led to improved buying power in a majority of metro areas during the second quarter5. To purchase a single-family home at the national median price, a buyer making a 5 percent downpayment would need an income of $47,816, a 10 percent downpayment would require an income of $45,299, and $40,266 would be needed for a 20 percent downpayment.

Total housing inventory6 showed much-needed improvement at the end of the second quarter at 2.30 million existing homes available for sale, which is 6.5 percent higher than a year ago. The average supply during the quarter was 5.6 months; it was 5.1 months in the second quarter of 2013. A supply of 6 to 7 months represents a rough balance between buyers and sellers.

Jon Pickhardt, 2014 President of The Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS®, and Co Owner of Flagship Properties SC, and the Office Centers LLC in Greenville, SC, says even with the increase in supply, Realtors® across the country are reporting that properties are selling faster than earlier in the year7. “The improving economy and lower interest rates are increasing the pool of interested buyers,” he said. “On the contrary, competition remains tight and all-cash offers are still a common occurrence.

This inevitably is causing hesitation for some first-time buyers, who are more likely to have lower down payments and need to secure financing amidst tight credit conditions.”

Metro area condominium and cooperative prices – covering changes in 62 metro areas – showed the national median existing-condo price was $211,100 in the second quarter, up 5.9 percent from

the second quarter of 2013 ($199,300). Forty-seven metro areas (76 percent) showed increases in their median condo price from a year ago; 15 areas had declines.

The five most expensive housing markets in the second quarter were the San Jose, Calif., metro area, where the median existing single-family price was $899,500; San Francisco, $769,600; Anaheim-Santa Ana, Calif., $691,900; Honolulu, $678,500; and San Diego, $504,200.

The five lowest-cost metro areas in the second quarter were Youngstown-WarrenBoardman, Ohio, where the median single-family home price was $78,600; Rockford, Ill., $85,300; Elmira, N.Y., $87,800; Decatur, Ill., $90,900; and Toledo, Ohio, $95,900.

Regionally, total existing-home sales in the Northeast rose 5.1 percent in the second quarter but are 4.1 percent below the second quarter of 2013. The median existing single-family home price in the Northeast was $255,500 in the second quarter, down slightly (0.9 percent) from a year ago.

In the Midwest, existing-home sales increased 9.4 percent in the second quarter but remain 6.1 percent below a year ago. The median existing single-family home price in the Midwest increased 4.4 percent to $167,600 in the second quarter from the same quarter a year ago.

Existing-home sales in the South climbed 3.4 percent in the second quarter but are 1.0 percent below the second quarter of 2013. The median existing single-family home price in the South was $187,300 in the second quarter, 3.7 percent above a year earlier.

In the West, existing-home sales rose 7.1 percent in the second quarter but remain 9.0 percent below a year ago. The median existing single-family home price in the West jumped 7.3 percent to $297,400 in the second quarter from the second quarter of a year ago.

When you step onto the campus of Five Oaks there is an undeniable feeling that this is a special and unique place.

Educators have touted the benefits of Montessori education since Maria Montessori first developed her research based-educational method more than a century ago. At Five Oaks Academy, a Montessori School for Toddler through 8th Grade, the mission is to bring this time-tested Montessori education to the 21st century.

Five Oaks Academy opened its doors in 2003 because the school’s owner and founder, Laura Baur, was searching for an elementary option for her two young sons. In her quest to find the best academic fit for them, she discovered Montessori. Several key tenets stood out to her: child centered academics, the focus on individual needs, the lack of restrictions regarding grade-level curriculum, the hands-on learning style and the creation of a happy, peaceful and safe environment.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the small school that began with 37 students on a former farm on tree-lined Jonesville Road has grown to more than 200 students and 30 staff. While her sons have moved on to high school and college, Baur still spends many days at the school that is her labor of love.

When starting the school 10 years ago, Baur recruited her dream team of leaders and teachers.

Executive Director Kathleen Trewhella-Grant, who had 17 years of experience as a teacher and director, helped Baur shape her dream into reality. They knew there was a need for a new direction in education and shared the vision of creating a place where students could learn to problem solve and to be independent thinkers.

“If we could provide a nurturing and stimulating environment, students would be able to develop executive function skills, embody empathy for others and be challenged academically,” TrewhellaGrant said. “It has been exciting to watch over the past 10 years as our students explore their interests, commit to independence and learn to fail as a route to success. I have been watching 21st century learners unfold before my eyes. I could not be more pleased to see our confident and self-aware graduates go on to be extremely successful in their endeavors.”

The nurturing environment these two like-minded women dreamed of took shape and flourished quickly. With the knowledge that each child has his or her own learning style, the students at Five Oaks

Academy are treated as individuals, with tailored lesson plans. A 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio (5:1 ratio for toddler classroom) allows the teachers to constantly observe and assess their students’ learning.

Five Oaks is known for its challenging academic curriculum, where students explore the realm of mathematics, language, history, science, geography and the arts in a creative and research-based manner. The program is designed to develop students’ skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and time management with a focus on creativity and entrepreneurship. These valuable skills, paired with a strong academic background, help create students who are prepared for the 21st century workforce.

Students are given opportunities to engage in real life activities by running classroom businesses, completing internships in the Greenville community, and even planning, cooking and serving full meals. This learning environment fosters the discovery and development of each student’s individual talents and strengths.

JUST A THOUGHT WITH DIANE IRVING

Feeding the fire When I drove down the Road to Recovery, I wasn’t quite sure what I would find.

However, I pushed forward on an empty driveway to a place called Turning Point.

Little did I know, at the end of it, I would be left with an appetite to feed the fire.

That fire lives in all of us, whether it is a passion for a job, a hobby or sometimes a harmful addiction. Unhealthy fires can bring destruction to our lives; when left to our own devices, the flame won’t burn out. All it takes is one match to reignite the fire of change.

This isn’t just a story about the fires in John Stephens Jr. It’s a story about all of us. As John would say, “If you don’t change, you’ll be on the corner begging for it.”

Despite grades good enough for college, John decided to join the military.

He aspired to be many things, even pursue college later on, but got swept away with wanting acceptance. “My peers blew off steam by partying and I wanted to fit in,” he told me. That’s when it all began – as simple as that.

Losing a sibling spiraled his life down-

ward further, leading to poor decisions.

Too much freedom at a young age and no practice with decision-making led to drugs and alcohol abuse. Soon enough, those substances became dream killers; life began to pass him by because he was too busy partying. John was self-medicating to deal with his issues.

Everything began to deteriorate. He didn’t have any good relationships, he was in and out of institutions, and was left out of his family’s photo albums.

“It was like wandering around in the wilderness, not feeling any love,” he says. “I would make some progress, and then be right back where I started.”

At rock bottom, he decided one day to pray, asking God to take over his life. An overwhelming calm came upon him; he felt lighter, stopped feeling so judged or worried about what others think.

He turned to Turning Point. This nonprofit recovery agency does not turn someone away based on an initial inability to pay. They request a 90-day commitment to getting clean, but they

don’t kick you out afterward. They give you food, shelter, and a bed without charging rent until you get a job.

They take you to work until you get a car. It’s a completely self-sustaining operation. Each person has a sponsor and works the 12-step AA and NA program.

God blessed John with enlightenment. He no longer wakes up wondering where the money to get his next fix will come from. He doesn’t feel the shame or guilt. Now, he says, “Be the best person you can be; you may be the only Bible another person reads.”

With God leading, everything can change, he says. “Life is unmanageable on your own. Any time I think about wanting control, I replay the horror tape of my life and realize I screwed it up every time. In order to succeed, you only have to change one thing – everything.”

The Generous Garden Project has been involved in John’s life by providing food to the individuals at Turning Point, as well as an opportunity for volunteering at the garden. John says, “Despite your circumstances, just knowing that someone else cares about you regardless of your opinion on yourself does wonders for one’s morale.”

John is graduating next month with an

electrical engineering degree. Asked what his future holds, he says, “It’s not about me and what I want. It’s about following God’s will. That’s what I intend to do.”

Despite the rough journey, John found God, himself, his purpose, and got his life back through a sincere search for the truth and change. Now he acts as a mentor at Turning Point to other addicts devoting time to helping others find a new fire. “All addicts’ stories sound like your own,” he says with a smile.

Addiction is in all of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. Either we know of someone with an addiction problem or we are that person. We need the match of change as John experienced through faith in God. As John spoke, I feverishly wrote down every word. The sentence that fed my fire was, “Words can save a person.”

This is the reason I write: to help people realize the truth about life.

If you’re fueling an addiction, let a new match change your direction. If you have a healthy passion, just keep feeding the fire.
