Open House sparks childhood memories for Augusta Road mom

She’s been Christmas shopping at Lewis Plaza for three-plus decades, and every year Kathryn Rowan brings home the same thing: happy memories. “Oh, I remember being a very little girl and going to the Plaza pharmacy for hot chocolate, then heading over to Belk to see Santa,” Rowan says, recalling spirited merchants, brightly decorated storefronts and holiday music wafting through the crowded sidewalks. “We did all our holiday shopping on Augusta Road – I’d go with my mom to get my dad’s present, and I’d go with my dad to get my mom’s present – and we’d bump into all our neighbors there, too.” Some things, she says, never change. Rowan grew up in the Augusta Road neighborhood and is now raising a family there, too. She makes a point of bringing her children – Margaret, age 6, and Charlie, age 4 – to Holiday Open House every year so they can make happy Christmas memories of their own. “This was so fun for me (as a child) at Christmastime – and now it’s so fun for my kids,” Rowan says, noting Margaret and Charlie particularly enjoy picking out presents at Ten Thousand Villages and riding the horse drawn carriage. “And of course, they ALWAYS look forward to seeing Santa!” Holiday Open House is a celebration of Augusta Road’s local, independent business community – a tradition Rowan holds close to her heart. “We are so lucky there are such good and interesting shops here,” says Rowan. And as a homegrown retailer herself – Kathryn and her husband Stuart own Rowan Company, a furniture store on Laurens Road – she enjoys supporting Greenville-based business. “I believe in shopping local,” Rowan says. “I loved shopping (on Augusta Road) as a little girl – and I still love it today.”

A Giving Spirit

HAPPY OLIVEDAYS

Hunger never takes a holiday. That’s why providing for neighborhood non-profits is always part of the Christmas shopping season along Augusta Road. Here, merchants and service providers get into the spirit of giving by supporting two charities located within the Augusta Road Business District that feed those less fortunate. “We are called to help the needy in our community,” says Gerry Barlik, director of the Samaritan House in Greenville. “I appreciate seeing businesses reach out to others.” The Augusta Road Business Association traditionally kicks off the Winter holidays with a day of service at Meals on Wheels, an organization that enhances the quality of life of homebound individuals by providing nutritious meals, personal contact and related services. This year, ARBA members covered a November 7 shift on the kitchen line and also organized/loaded emergency shelf kits for delivery. ARBA further supports Meals on Wheels by placing donation collection boxes at participating locations during the Holiday

Open House. The business community also holds a canned goods drive for Samaritan House, whose mission includes a food pantry that provides groceries to needy families. Collection boxes are placed in various stores all along Augusta Road, including Paisley & Paper, Ten Thousand Villages, Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio, Foxfire Gallery & Kitchen Shops, The Embassy Flowers & Nature’s Gifts, Savvy and the Pickwick

Pharmacy & Soda Fountain. When Samaritan House opened nine years ago, it served 85 families a month, according to Barlik; today, the faith-based non-profit provides groceries for upwards of 800 families per month. Requested donations include tuna, peanut butter, stews, soups, fruits, pasta, rice, evaporated milk, vegetables and mac n’cheese. “We also accept monetary donations,” says Barlik. “And we ask for your prayers, too.”

Lightson Businesses get creative for light-hearted contest

Lightson

Ready. Set. GLOW! The competition is on – and so are lights galore – to determine the yuletide’s best-dressed business on Augusta Road. Lights on Augusta is a friendly Christmas decorating contest amongst offices, retailers and service providers within the Augusta Road Business Association to see who creates the public’s favorite storefront. Winners are chosen by an online popular vote from the community. The contest brightens holiday shopping for patrons and proprietors alike. “We always have such a good time with Lights on Augusta,” says Becky Hyman

2012 Winner – Phil Hyman Photography of Phil Hyman Photography. The studio won bragging rights last year with a traditional display of red, green, gold and cream lights along with stockings, poinsettias and a sleigh. They combined this classic motif with 21st century technology, reaching out via social media to encourage friends and clients to come visit and vote at www.OnlyOnAugusta. com. “It gives us great exposure.” Second-place honors went to Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio; third place, Harrison Lighting.

 Best Cold Food  Best Hot Food  Best Dessert

For 2013’s decorating contest, Hyman says the studio is developing a theme based on the Christmas story. Other participants aren’t yet showing their cards – nobody wants to give away any ideas – but expect businessrelated themes and humorous holiday takes along with more traditional designs. “The businesses always look beautiful,” Hyman says, “and it’s a lot of fun for everyone.” So come check out Lights on Augusta – then go online and check the box for your favorite. The public is encouraged to visit each participating business and voice an opinion via online voting at www.OnlyOnAugusta. com. The poll opens December 1 and runs through New Years Eve. Registration for the 3rd annual Lights on Augusta contest is still under way. The early participant list includes Alisa Marie Fine Lingerie, Consign & Design on Augusta, Foxfire Gallery & Kitchen Shops, Gage’s, Harrison Lighting, Kate Carlyle, L’s On Augusta, Meals on Wheels, Moppetts, Paisley & Paper, Phil Hyman Photography, Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio, Reedy River Dentistry, Roots, Sassy Kids on Augusta, The Embassy Flowers & Nature’s Gifts, The Grey Goose, The Pickwick Pharmacy & Soda Fountain, and Wisteria Salon & Spa.
