Welcome to Greenville, SC, and the 2014 Para-cycling Road World Championships. Greenville Health System (GHS) is thrilled to be a sponsor of this event, and we congratulate all of the athletes for earning an opportunity to compete in this prestigious competition. Part of our mission at GHS is to improve constantly. Athletes provide a great example of this. The cyclists that we’ll watch this weekend are constantly measuring and comparing results to improve their performances. At GHS, research and academics are a key part of how we seek to improve, while transforming health care for the benefit of the people and communities we serve. GHS is the only academic health center of its kind. 2014 UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

YOUR RACE GUIDE From Start to Finish

Message from the UCI President Each year the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships see the world’s top athletes in the discipline battle for the right to wear the coveted rainbow jersey. In 2014, those battles will take place in Greenville, more precisely on the Millennium Campus, which has already hosted USA Cycling Professional Championships. It is here that, over the space of five days, hundreds of athletes from more than 44 countries will race for the title of World Champion. After the spectacular and popular handcycling team relay on August 28th, we will witness two days of time trials followed by two days of road races. The athletes have put in a great many months of training and preparation in order to be at the peak of their form for these World Championships, and I wish them all the very best of luck. While the athletes prepare to take centre stage, my thoughts also turn to those working tirelessly behind the scenes. The UCI awarded this event to Greenville back in January 2012, and since then a motivated team of organisers has dedicated an enormous amount of time and energy to ensuring that Greenville 2014 will be an unqualified success. On behalf of the UCI, I thank the organisers, their partners, local authorities, sponsors and volunteers, all of whom have an important part to play in the smooth running of the 2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships. Para-cycling is a fast developing discipline, and I would like to make special mention to US Paralympics, US Handcycling and USA Cycling, under the Presidency of Steve Johnson, who work together for the para-cycling movement at all levels: from the Elite to recreational para-cycling. Over the next five days we will be witnessing para-cycling at its very highest level and I invite you all to enjoy the guaranteed excitement and emotions of the 2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships. YOUR RACE GUIDE From Start to Finish

THE COMPETITIONS HANDCYCLING RELAY A team discipline that has become a showcase event for spectators as handcycles can reach speeds over 30 MPH.

TIME TRIALS Separated by 30-second intervals, riders race against the clock for all categories. The distance is usually shorter than the road races. The fastest person across the course is the winner.

ROAD RACE Multiple athletes race by category and classification in a mass start. Male and female athletes compete in categories related to ability, such as amputation, limb loss, blindness, visual impairment, spinal cord injury, wheelchair-users and cerebral palsy, brain injury or stroke.

The Race is On This week you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome and cheer for more than 300 top athletes from around the globe, without leaving the Upstate. What’s more, this is no ordinary sporting competition and these are no ordinary athletes. It’s the 2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, an Olympic sanctioned event that is often heralded as the Super Bowl of Para-cycling. The competitors are remarkable men and women who in the face of adversity— amputation/limb loss, blindness/visual impairment, spinal cord injury, and cerebral palsy/brain injury/stroke—honed athletic skills worthy of the world stage. For five action-packed days, relays, time trial and road race competitions will determine victors and showcase the super human spirit and unwavering determination that courses through these elite athletes’ veins. Don’t miss your chance to witness the action and catch the contagious can-do spirit of these amazing athletes firsthand. Here’s your guide to accessing your front row seats. Sponsored by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body of professional cycling, the World Championships features relay, time trial and road race competitions. Competitors utilize bikes that are adapted to their ability, including traditional or adapted bicycle, tandem, tricycle, or handcycle. Each year a different location adds to the challenge of the World Championships competition. Depending on the course, the race may be more flat and end in a sprint, while other years may feature hills that can result in a solo breakaway.

Finland

Ernst van Dyk South Africa’s Ernst van Dyk is arguably one of the world’s most remarkable Para-athletes. He is a past Paralympian and World Championship handcycling gold medalist. Also, he is a 10-time winner of the Boston Marathon in the racing wheelchair category. Few athletes in the world can claim such impressive sporting accolades.

Venezuela

Jamie Whitmore Team USA’s Jamie Whitmore first rose to fame as an able-bodied off-road triathlete and the winningest female athlete in XTERRA history. However, a battle with cancer in 2008 left her without the use of her lower left leg. Since 2012, Whitmore has taken the para-cycling world by storm. With an undefeated season in 2013, and an overall World Cup title in 2014, Whitmore will look to defend her sweep of the C3 class. Whitmore also recently won an ESPY for Best Female Athlete with a Disability.

CRACKING THE CODE It’s more fun to watch when you understand the code, so we’ve cracked it for you. Competing athletes are divided into four categories of disability using designated classifications based on the extent of ability, for both men and women and for all age categories. The first letter stands for the gender—M for men, W for women. Subsequent letters stand for the category. The final number indicates the class within the division—the lower the number, the greater the degree of impairment.

Categories: C - Cycling - regular and adaptive bikes (upper and/or lower body disability, amputation, cerebral palsy) with five subcategories (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5) H - Handcycling - with four subcategories (H1, H2, H3, H4) T - Tricycles - with two subcategories (T1, T2)

-

B or VI – Blind or Visually Impaired plus a sighted pilot on tandem bikes

IT’S A FACT Kevin Kopera, M.D., Medical Director at GHS’ Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital, is one of only 10 medical classifiers in the world for the Paralympic athletes. Meaning, he evaluates which competition class athletes can compete in within each division.

HOMETOWN ATHLETES There’s nothing more exciting than cheering for fellow Upstate residents, and you’ll find three zooming around the racetrack this weekend. Look for their names and give them plenty of home turf support—because if there’s one thing more exciting than cheering on fellow residents—it’s seeing them on the winners’ podium!

Aaron Trent of Greenville, S.C.

Lance Footer of Taylors, S.C.

A two-time medalist at the Para-cycling Track World Championships, Trent will be looking to his hometown advantage to help him in his Road World Championships debut.

Fresh off of a close win in the national championship tandem road race, Footer will be looking for hometown support as he rides in his first Road World Championships. While Footer trains locally in South Carolina, his pilot, Shawn Olin, hails from Chula Vista, California and has one of the longest distances to travel to Greenville of any of the U.S. team members.

Ryan Boyle, a student at Furman University The youngest member of the U.S. team at 21-years-old, Boyle won his first national title in the trike division in 2013. This is his first international championship.

“THE ONLY THING WE CAN BE SURE OF ABOUT THE FUTURE IS THAT IT WILL BE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.” – ARTHUR C. CLARKE, 1964

When we set out to build an electric car, we set out to build a BMW. And we did just that with the first-ever, all-electric BMW i3 with 170 hp and up to 110 electric miles on a single charge.* It aims to take driving to a whole new dimension—so hold tight, because where we’re going, there’s no looking back.
