Born in Australia, raised in South Carolina, attending college in Kentucky, Ali Galyer will swim on the New Zealand team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Confused yet? Galyer, who grew up in Greenville and graduated from J.L. Mann High School, says her upbringing fostered her love for New Zealand. “I lived in a house with my dad who’s from New Zealand and my mom who’s from Canada,” she says. “It was very different than the typical American household.” Learning about New Zealand’s culture as a kid, Galyer always aspired to be on Team New Zealand. “So being able to qualify for Pan Pacific two years ago, and then World Championships this summer, and the Olympic Games next summer, was above and beyond what I think any of us really thought about,” Galyer says. At first, swimming was just another athletic activity for Galyer and her sister, who’s three years older. But when both girls competed in gymnastics and swimming, their parents made them choose one. “So good thing I didn’t pick gymnastics because I’m 5’10” and that wouldn’t have worked out very well,” Galyer says with a laugh. First swimming at age 5, she continued to swim throughout high school. “You know every little sister wants to do what the big sister does, so then we both got into it,” Galyer says. The two sisters even earned swim scholarships to the University of Ken-

While many elite athletes train their whole lives to compete in the Olympic Games, Galyer swam simply because it was fun. “It wasn’t anything that my parents pressured me into doing,” she says. “It was like, ‘If you’re having fun, you can keep doing it. If you’re not, then you can quit whatever.’”
Galyer says she really admires her parents for never critiquing or forcing her to compete. Swimming was always her choice. “But I found it really nice that I didn’t have the extra pressure, because I put a lot of pressure on myself, when you get into that college and international team level,” Galyer says. “So it was nice not having that pressure of having to do it for someone else.” Now, she tells aspiring swimmers to
swim for the love of the sport. “If you’re not having fun and you don’t like what you’re doing, you’re not going to succeed at it,” she says. Swimming with dedicated teammates and helping them accomplish their goals is what Galyer enjoys most about the sport. “There’s definitely a level of talent, but there’s also a huge level of dedication and practice that makes you that good,” she says.

In the last six years, the number of unvaccinated students with religious exemptions in Greenville County has more than doubled, following a statewide trend. South Carolina isn’t unique. Since 2001, the rate of unvaccinated children in the United States more than quadrupled, from 0.3% to 1.3% of children born in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Greenville County is home to nearly one in five of the 11,154 unvaccinated students in South Carolina. It falls second only to Spartanburg County for its rate of unvaccinated students in the state, rising from 1.2% of students with religious exemptions in 2013-14 to 2.5% in 2018-19 — an increase of about 1,200 students. In order to attend any school or day care in South Carolina, state law requires that students be initially vaccinated against several contagious and often deadly diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (also called whooping cough), polio, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B, and varicella (also

Measles: A virus that can cause serious health complications and even death. in 2000 measles were eliminated from the United States – the disease returned in 2014 due to unvaccinated children.

“She was in the hospital for about two years — she, luckily, didn’t have to go into an iron lung, but she couldn’t walk. She lost all movement. She had weird little shoes on her feet,” Watts said. “She had pins and things put in her toes to try to keep them straightened out.” Watts’ aunt, who is now in her 70s, still feels the effects of the disease — she suffers from post-polio syndrome, a condition where a person who has contracted polio experiences symptoms from it years later. “She barely can walk,” Watts said. “The right leg is back to being virtually paralyzed — it’s skinny, it’s small. It’s really sad.” Polio has no cure — only treatments and prevention. The ease with which parents can opt out of vaccinations in most states has been a national debate for the past few years, with some states taking action in the last few months. In May, Maine’s governor signed a bill into law ending religious exemptions for vaccinations in the state — New York’s governor followed suit in June, making them two of only five states in the country that don’t allow religious exemptions. Most religions do not explicitly object to vaccinations — it
isn’t outlined in any major doctrines. But an often-repeated concern some parents have with vaccinations is the myth that certain vaccines can cause autism, or that giving several vaccinations in a short span of time can be harmful to young children — neither of which has any basis in fact. “It’s very frustrating, but it just goes to show that we need to do far more education in medicine. It just shows that we are not doing our jobs as providers, or nurses, or all of us, as a whole, in medicine,” Watts said. “It’s amazing that the wrong kind of knowledge can get out and just spread like wildfire.” Along with concerns that unvaccinated populations are on the rise, experts also worry that unvaccinated individuals put other members of the population at risk — infants who haven’t received all of their doses and individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with cancer or elderly populations. “These are deadly diseases,” Lage said. “And the reason that we don’t see them often is due to vaccination.”

Greenville Drive partners with Greenville Literacy Association to offer English classes to players n story by ARIEL GILREATH

The Greenville Drive is teaming up with the Greenville Literacy Association to offer Spanish-speaking players English classes. This isn’t new for the Boston Red Sox affiliate — the organization has been partnering with nonprofits throughout the country to offer English language classes during the four-month season. But this year will be the team’s first time using the Greenville Literacy Association (GLA). Dan Abroms, mental skills coordinator with the Boston Red Sox minor league, said the organization has been offering classes for years. “The minor league is all about development, making sure that players can develop and work their way to higher levels and play at the major league,” Abroms said. “So it’s more than just baseball — it’s also about learning general skills, life skills, and learning how to speak English, especially with coaches that don’t speak their native tongue.” The Red Sox also offers Spanish language classes at some of its facilities to help players and coaches who speak only English. Yoan Aybar, who plays No. 37 for the Greenville Drive this season, didn’t speak any English before he started traveling to the United States from his home in the Dominican Republic each baseball season a few years ago. “It’s very difficult,” Aybar said. Like his teammates, the 22-year-old has a busy schedule — from May to August, they play seven games a week, train in between, and also fit
in an hour of English class when they can. Yorvin Pantoja, who plays No. 19 for the Drive, also takes the class. Although the schedule can be intense, Pantoja said they still enjoy playing the game. He started playing baseball when he was 7 years old and never stopped. Even in between games and training, Pantoja said many of the teammates play baseball video games. “It’s a hobby,” Pantoja said. Once or twice a week, the Spanish-speaking players meet with their GLA tutor, Cheryl Bentley, to go over lessons. “What’s so fun about working with this group is that they’re already a team, and they’re already comfortable with each other,” Bentley said. “So if anyone makes a mistake, they’ll automatically help each other.” Bentley never knows who will be in her class — players frequently move up and down to different teams in the minor leagues based on their game performance. So far, she’s had about 10 students this summer. “They pick up English while they’re here,” Bentley said. “I’ve seen it just from May to the end of July.” Keibert Petit, who plays No. 51 for the Drive, didn’t know any English before he started playing in the United States from Venezuela. Now, he helps translate for his teammates. “I want to speak English perfect,” Petit said.

Data breach affects some Greenville County Schools student information n story by MELODY CUENCA
A total of 24,282 students of Greenville County Schools were impacted by the Pearson data breach. The UK education software company notified more than 13,000 U.S. school district and university accounts who were affected by the breach. The breach exposed low-risk student data from Pearson’s AimsWeb accounts in the U.S. Greenville County School students who attended kindergarten in the district from 201213 to 2016-17 and were born 2004-11 are those whose names and dates of births are breached.

The district is working to find contact information for those students who were af-
fected. Early next week, the district will also mail letters to affected families. “Greenville County Schools has both employees and systems whose sole purpose is to protect our student data,” Superintendent W. Burke Royster said in a statement. “Doing so includes carefully screening and vetting the vendors with whom we enter into data sharing agreements. Unfortunately, in the modern world large data systems are constantly under attack from cyber thieves and sometimes those thieves find a way to break in. This is one reason we no longer collect student social security numbers for school registration.” South Carolina districts are required by law to have a formal assessment and data monitoring system. The district used AimsWeb for that purpose until the 2016-17 school year. In South Carolina, dates of birth are protected when the dates are matched with the names. Although, student names are not considered protected information.

Food truck to provide free meals to students during the summer months

The Riley Institute at Furman partnered with Greenville County Schools to release a food truck that will provide free meals to Greenville County students. The food truck was unveiled at a recent event at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church. The food truck came to be through the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative program, where participants work in small groups to target issues in the community through service projects. In previous years, the DLI program worked on adding opportunities for play and exercise through the Mobi-Rec bus, which brings recreation to areas where services are unavailable. This year, the Riley Fellows expanded Greenville County’s Seamless Summer Feeding Program by increasing the plan’s reach through the new food truck. The truck will bring meals to children unable to travel to Seamless Summer locations. In the summer months, the food truck will provide nutritious, balanced meals
to students under 18 in communities throughout Greenville County, including Berea and Travelers Rest. During the school year, it will host nutrition-related educational events, lunch gatherings, and fresh fruit and vegetable samplings. “It is particularly important in the summer, by allowing us to bring not just the food, but everything they need to prepare and serve it directly to locations in the community,” said Dr. Burke Royster, Greenville County Schools superintendent. Traci Hogan, the school district’s assistant superintendent for special education services, said the Riley Fellows knew GCS was the largest school district in the state, but they were unaware that more than half of the district’s students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Hogan said this new truck will eliminate the barrier of transportation by bringing the food to the children.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System was recognized as a Best Hospital by the U.S. News & World Report. Both of the hospital’s campuses were ranked second in the state of South Carolina but came first for Greenville. The Best Hospital rankings aid patients in making decisions regarding where they will receive the best care for any ailment. For the award, over 4,500 medical centers were examined nationwide.

Bon Secours Releases 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment Bon Secours St. Francis Health System has released the results of its 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment. Additionally, while access to other healthcare services has improved some compared to previous research, access to mental health services is still difficult.

As one of South Carolina's fastest growing cities, Greer offers everything from lakes (Lake Robinson and Lake Cunningham) to the only U.S. BMW manufacturing facility. Throw in the Cultral Arts Council and even a Children's Theatre along with multiple recreation facilities and there's no wonder why Greer is such a fast growing and popular home destination. From 1990-2010 Greer's population more than doubled and according to U.S. Census Bureau forecasts that population number could climb to 40,000 residents by 2020. Greer has come a long way from its humble beginnings, James Manning Greer owned a 200 acre farm known as the old Blakely Place and as tradition tells it, Greer traded a few acres to the railroad and then sold the rest of the farm to W.T. Shumante. Shumante began selling lots and a lot in the business district went for around $25-$75 per acre. On March 25, 1876 the town was incorporated as "Town of Greers". The "s" fell off the name sometime in the early 1900's but it would be 100 years from incorporation (1976) until the name was officially changed to the City of Greer. Greer offers a multitude of big city amenities but manages to keep that small town feel.

- Katie Fenske, local photographer left something out in the yard like chairs and things, I like to imagine what they might have been doing.” Lighting within a space is the key motivator for Fenske’s work. “I guess I want a painting more than anything else,” she says. “I like to envision it as a painting instead of a photograph — which seems strange.” In search of the right lighting at the right time, Fenske enjoys catching a glimpse of the fleeting beauty that surrounds her at sunrise and sunset. Her painterly photographs allow viewers to reflect amid the quiet stillness of the atmosphere. “It’s kind of like a treasure hunt for me,” she says. “When I actually get an image, it feels like I stumbled on a piece of something shiny on the ground that I picked up — that’s how it feels.” As a scavenger of sorts, Fenske also tracks down beads for making jewelry. “I love to scrounge up old beads like vintage beads, glass beads. Then I just string them up into necklaces.” Working on tedious projects has always appealed to Fenske. Her day job includes building equipment that conducts chemical analysis. “It’s hard-left from what I do in my off time. But I like it,” she says. “I like to tinker.” While her photographs are not available to purchase now, Fenske hopes to sell prints in the future. Her work can be seen at katiefenske.com.

DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GOT (TILL IT'S BACK) One of the most iconic images of the hair-metal era of the late 1980s is Cinderella’s Tom Keifer perched behind a grand piano on the beach, belting out the epic ballad “Don’t Know What You Got (Til It’s Gone).” Songs like that one, “Nobody’s Fool,” and “The Last Mile” helped propel Cinderella’s first two albums to tripleplatinum status. And yet, despite the fact that the band indulged in all of the hairspray and outlandish outfits of the other hair-metal bands, there was always something different about its music. Keifer, a man of few words if ever there was one, agrees. “I always thought of it as a rock 'n' roll band,” he says. VINCENT HARRIS Contributor
There’s plenty of evidence to back him up on that front. The follow-up to "Long Cold Winter," 1990’s "Heartbreak Station," was a lot more stripped-down rock than heavy metal pomp, and the hit single “Shelter Me” was a downright Stones-y rocker. It would have been interesting to see how Cinderella navigated the grunge-music era, but after 1994’s ironically titled "Still Standing," Keifer didn’t release any new music for almost 20 years. Keifer’s debut solo album, "The Way Life Goes," broke the silence in 2013. Keifer is now prepping a new album called "Rise" for release and going on tour. That tour will bring him to The Firmament in Greenville this Friday night. And yes, the set-list will be packed with Cinderella favorites.

The Travers Brothership, an Asheville, North Carolina, band led by twin siblings Kyle and Eric Travers, just came off one of the biggest, and most challenging, weekends of their sevenyear career. “It’s a huge honor to be invited to play so much music,” Kyle Travers says. It also seems like it should’ve been a little intimidating, but the Travers Brothership knocked it out of the park, to the extent that Rolling Stone named the band one of the “10 Best Things We Saw at FloydFest.” And that’s probably because the Travers Brothership has been honing its potent combination of old-school soul and gritty, exploratory jam-rock long enough to know how to stretch it out. “We’re comfortable with our repertoire,” Kyle says, “so it was just a matter of stamina. A lot of our songs have evolved and taken on new shapes, and that’s how we’ve naturally seemed to progress as time goes on.” The Travers Brothership will be bringing that soul-jam music vibe to the Radio Room in Greenville on Saturday night, and the Upstate has become a sort of second home for the band over the years, partially because of their friendship with one of the area’s favorite sons. “He’s let us open up for him, and his support of our band has really been a big help,” Travers says.

REGULAR BBQ SANDWICH PLATE.................. $7.25 Before I moved to Greenville, I’d never enjoyed biscuits or barbeque. Sure, I’d tried them, but I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. But I’ll leave South Carolina with a soft spot for smoky pulled pork with a vinegar-based sauce and flaky, buttery biscuits. And for character, smoke, sauce, and taste I don’t think you can beat Henry’s Smokehouse.
DELIVERING TO THE MASSES
On any given afternoon, Henry’s parking lot is sure to be filled with highway crew trucks, sports cars, minivans, and motorcycles. Inside, or spilling out onto their shaded picnic tables, I’ve seen priests, men in Italian suits, grandparents, farmers and construction workers bite into plates brimming with BBQ and stacked with sides. Smoke drifts over the parking lot and you can smell the place before you arrive.

I’d never ordered anything plus “2 or 3” before coming to Henry’s. It’s just not how things are organized on menus anywhere but in the South. But I’ve grown to like the concept. Henry’s has a printed list of 38

They also have a food truck, Henry's Hog Hauler, with locations announced on their facebook page. sides displayed on the countertop which rotate but always contain staples like fries, mac, and cheese, green beans and coleslaw. During our last visit, I ordered my pulled pork sandwich with a side of fries and coleslaw. We also got a few ham bones to go for the dogs back at home. What I learned about barbeque is that is unifying food. I finished my sandwich and began to miss a city where barbeque brought people together, even though we had a few more weeks in Greenville.
HOW DOES HENRY'S MAKE THEIR BBQ SO TENDER?
Henry’s cooks its pork butts for 12 hours and its ribs for more than eight hours. The meat is cooked on a low-temp on hickory logs in the BBQ pit. After cooking, Henry’s chefs hand-pull the pork from the bone selecting only the juiciest portions.

When it comes to divisive food topics, the true name of the smoky deliciousness that is fall-apart slow cooked pork is one of the most pressing arguments of all.
Is that plate of slow cooked pork called barbecue or barbeque?
Just drive around the South and you'll find multiple variations of the name, and multiple opinions on which variation is actually correct. Well, we did a little research, what we found is that while the two spellings are both considered correct it does seem that barbecue is just a little more correct. Barbecue originates from a term Taino Indians used in reference to wooden cooking structures they used to roast meats. Spanish explorers later incorporated the word barbacoa into their vocabulary when they brought the cooking method back to Spain. As for barbeque... it is thought the "q" comes from a later french translation, and this spelling is widely accepted as a correct variation. Our opinion? Just go for "BBQ" avoiding the controversy completely.

The Shake Shack burger – smashed, griddled patty and melted American cheese – has become an imitable menu item for many restaurants hoping to replicate the fast-casual chain’s craveable signature sandwich. The nearest Shake Shack to Greenville is in a Charlotte suburb, and the New York-based group doesn’t yet move into Greenvillesized markets. Currently the closest knock-off burger is at Husk Greenville. Chef Sean Brock, whose recent episode on the popular Netfilx series Chef’s Table has garnered critical acclaim, successfully modeled the famous Husk burger for his former restaurant after Shake Shack’s. It’s a solid option, but soon there will be another.
A NEW CONCEPT
A Greenville restaurateur has taken up the mantle with his new concept Hip Burger, set to launch as a food truck this month and in Mauldin in a brick-and-mortar location in early 2020. The main feature will be a Shake-Shack-style smash burger with house made sauce, LTO, and American cheese on a high quality potato roll. Daniel Knowlton, a 20-year Greenville County resident, has spent many years beyond that in restaurant operations, mostly on the corporate side with Zaxby’s. Hip Burger is his original concept built from scratch for the Greenville market. His menu is simple – cheeseburger, fried chicken sandwich, hand cut and breaded chicken nuggets, fries, three basic milkshake flavors, and Jones Soda for fountain drinks. “I want to be really good at a few things,” he says. The focus for him is on a high quality product for a good price, which will land somewhere between the cost of Cook Out and Five Guys, he says.

From South Georgia, Knowlton relocated to Greenville with Zaxby’s and has been watching the market growth. “I love what’s happening in Greenville,” he says. “This is the market that has the best opportunity.” He says the market isn’t saturated yet, and the Greenville community is uniquely supportive of local businesses. He also notes that food trucks are having a bit of a hey-day in the Upstate, which is why he first chose to launch a mobile Hip Burger. While in the process of finalizing those plans, he found the building at 791 E. Butler Road but the truck was already happening. Knowlton decided to keep both models moving forward and will use the truck as the test kitchen. He’s also hoping eventually to open multiple Hip Burger units around the area. The 2,600-square-foot space will seat about 60 guests and offer counter service and a drive-thru. The food truck will continue operating once the Mauldin location opens this winter. After three decades in franchising, Knowlton says consistency of guest experience in the restaurant is of key importance. He hopes to achieve that through a fun, relaxed atmosphere and continuous leadership development of his staff. “It’s all about having a good time,” he says.

Local author’s new book tells adventures of a real-life diabetes alert dog “Tabouli: The Story of a Heart-Driven Diabetes Alert Dog”

MATT PELICANO, AUTHOR Local author Matt Pelicano’s new book shares the adventures of a real-life diabetes alert dog named Tabouli and his 13-yearold owner, Elizabeth. “Tabouli: The Story of a Heart-Driven Diabetes Alert Dog” will release on Aug. 15. “The main focus of the book is the relationship between Elizabeth and the dog,” Pelicano says. “It shows the benefits of a medical alert dog but also the benefits of the love between the two of them.” Tabouli’s life was not easy before he found Elizabeth. Tied in a trash bag and thrown from a car, then later found by a family who couldn’t afford to keep him, Tabouli only knew abandonment. But when Elizabeth and Tabouli meet, their lives are forever changed. The two grow closer as they face challenges along Tabouli’s journey of becoming a certified service dog. “It’s a way to raise awareness about medical alert dogs, which is what Tabouli is, and to encourage kids who have juvenile diabetes to live life to the fullest,” the author says. Tabouli has taken many flights, visited islands, seen the world, and trained with world-renown dog trainer Debby Kay. With lots of stories to tell about Tabouli,
Pelicano assures a sequel is in the works with hopes to release one book a year in the Tabouli adventure series. Pelicano says he took liberties in fictionalizing Elizabeth and some events to make the book appealing to middle school aged children. The real owner of Tabouli is a 71-yearold lady named Elizabeth Gallagher with type one diabetes. “She had recently lost her husband to Alzheimer’s, and she wanted me to do a book about Tabouli and dedicate it to her husband,” Pelicano says. It was Gallagher’s idea to create a book series for kids to read all about Tabouli’s life. “So I thought it was a great idea,” Pelicano says. “And the name Tabouli is just a cool name.” While the book focuses on facts, Pelicano wanted the book to remain fun to read. “I didn’t want to make it too fanciful. I wanted it to be realistic,” he says. “But I would say there’s as much humor in the book as there is anything else.” “Tabouli: The Story of a Heart-Driven Diabetes Alert Dog” is available for preorder at mattpelicano.com, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
