OPIOIDS CAN AFFECT YOUR BRAIN AND CAUSE DEPENDENCY IN JUST 3 DAYS

Christmas Eve. Landon McNair was back home in Charlotte for six days from Greenville, including the family’s weekend ski trip to the North Carolina mountains. He liked to sleep in. At around 11 that morning, his father went upstairs to check on him. “I opened the door to a horrific sight,” Steve McNair says, sitting across from his brother, Larry, at a local oyster bar, where he tears off a paper towel to wipe his eyes. “I found him dead on the floor, on his back, in a contorted position with his eyes open. “He was gone. It was a pill. Street drug. It was disguised as a pharmaceutical drug.” Landon McNair, an Eagle Scout and star tennis player at Porter Ridge High School near Matthews, N.C., was 25 years old when he overdosed on opioids last December. He joined more than 70,000 other Americans who lost their lives to drug overdose, just 10,000 fewer deaths than from guns and car wrecks combined. When he was 19, Landon was playing basketball in the family’s driveway and came down on a long screw. The

Released in 1996, the opioid’s “one of the most successful pharmaceuticals of all time with worldwide sales totaling $35 billion,” says a February 2018 paper from three University of Notre Dame researchers. Before that, in the decade after 1991, opioid prescriptions tripled to 211 million. In 2017, nearly 400,000 opioid prescriptions were dispensed in Greenville County, whose population barely tops 500,000. The same year here saw more than 130 deaths involving opioids, heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin, according to the paper and to statistics from the state’s justplainkillers.com. “Those are monster drugs that are being put into everything,” Jones says. “If you have a bag of heroin and you want to make it last longer, you get fentanyl,

which is very cheap.” A source familiar with the “dark web” and requested anonymity for obvious reasons, says, “High-quality heroin has gone through the floor to fill in the gaps left by Oxy. I think it’s less than $10 an armful these days. Even trash heroin is being kept in business by the massive amount of fentanyl analogs that are coming in from clandestine labs in China.” One of those is carfentanyl, 100 times stronger than fentanyl. “Carfent, he says, “is so dangerous because you basically OD on something the size of like two sand grains.”

OPIOID EPIDEMIC South Carolina is not immune to the consequences of opioid misuse. Overdosing is at an epidemic level in our state. And while opioids can be a vital, life-changing tool for those living with chronic pain, these statistics highlight why they should only be used with extreme caution.

one. It’s a lot of things.” While physicians increasingly understand opioids’ super-addictive properties—contrary to Big Pharma’s insistence otherwise 15 years ago, hence the raft of recent lawsuits—educating healthcare professionals and the public about addiction itself is crucial, he says. Enter Shay Houser, 50, one of Greenville’s best-known entrepreneurs, with youturn.net, his fifth startup. The weekend after Thanksgiving 2017, he sat in a hotel room with a loaded .38 and “as much chemicals and booze as I could put into my body.” The following year, he launched youturn.com, an online platform with nearly 150 videos in three educational modules primarily designed for family members and employers. Because “25 percent of the workforce has a spouse or child that’s struggling with addiction,” he says he started youturn last year as a subscription service to teach employers how to identify substance abusers. 6

Jones, a youturn co-founder, serves as Chief Strategy Officer. McKissick is Vice President of Membership Experience. “With the opioid crisis going on, people are dying, kids are dying, something different has to be done,” she says. “The old model—wait until the addict hits bottom, wait until the you-know-what hits the fan and then deal with it in the office or when you’ve been told someone dies and then take notice—why not educate everybody about addiction and substance-use disorder and about what recovery is?” As Larry McNair says of his nephew, “He didn’t go to the hospital so he could get hooked on drugs, he went to the hospital because he needed to get his leg sewed up. You’re not going to some crack house and risking your life to get it when you first get it, you’re going to a doctor.”

STEVE GRANT

shares tragic, hopefilled true story in book “Don’t Forget Me” n story by MELODY CUENCA | photo by WILL CROOKS

“It’s a good story. It’s an unfortunate story, but it’s a very timely story,” Steve Grant says. He felt his story needed to be heard so much so that he wrote a book titled “Don’t Forget Me.” Grant exposes the gruesome truth of a parent’s worst nightmare — the loss of not only one child but two — and a nasty disease that’s ripping apart families. “We have two boys who took two different paths to the same outcome,” he says. His sons, Chris and Kelly Grant, both died of accidental drug overdoses within five years of each other. “This disease now is a white middleclass disease,” Grant says of addiction. “A lot of families are affected by it.”

Oftentimes parents who lose children to addiction are paralyzed by shame, according to Grant. “We tell them in this book that the parents have nothing to be ashamed of, they have nothing to be guilty of, and they really didn’t cause the problem,” he says. While stigma continues to exist around the issue, Grant views addiction as not simply a choice but rather as an illness. “It’s just like any other illness, it’s like cancer, and you can treat cancer,” he says. “If you’re addicted, you’re going to get treatment for the addiction.” Grant notes that his book “Don’t Forget Me” is written from the perspective of a parent and doesn’t discuss the politics of wheth-

er treatment works. Although his sons both struggled with substance abuse and addiction, Grant felt none of the stigma some parents experience. “I didn’t feel guilty at all. I didn’t feel any shame at all,” he says. “And, I didn’t really care what anybody thought of me. All I really cared about was helping my sons.” Grant speaks openly about his sons’ deaths, saying that a lot of grief is based on guilt — something he doesn’t have. “I’m comfortable with my efforts to help them,” he says. “Yes, I wish my second son would have gone to rehab. I offered it to him, but he wouldn’t go.” His oldest son Chris went to rehab five times plus an expensive boarding school.

Kelly never went to rehab. “Everything I read about that would happen to a family of someone with an addicted child just about happened,” Grants says. “We almost went bankrupt, had lawyers all over the place, police, my marriage of 25 years dissolved because of it.” In 2012, Grant started Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation in Greenville to combat substance abuse and addiction. The foundation provides financial assistance to programs that treat teens and young adults. “Don’t Forget Me” is available for pre-order at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and BooksA-Million. CLEMSON SECURES RESEARCH GRANT For USC med students to study infectious diseases

I’VE DEFINITELY LEARNED A LOT — ONE THING IS EXPERIMENTS NEVER WORK OUT THE WAY YOU WANT THEM TO, AND YOU JUST HAVE TO COME UP WITH DIFFERENT WAYS TO GO AROUND IT

n story by ARIEL GILREATH | photo by WILL CROOKS

Through a microscope, Courtney Fant eyes hundreds of cells wiggling, dividing, and multiplying. Found in tsetse flies in Sub-Saharan Africa, the cells are a type of parasite that, in a human, would result in the often-deadly African sleeping sickness. But in Clemson University’s Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center (EPIC) lab, it won’t take long before the cells multiply in a sealed container until they become overcrowded and die. Fant, along with four other medical students with the University of South Carolina, is researching fungal and parasitic eukaryotic pathogens — organisms that cause African sleeping sickness, fungal meningitis, toxoplasmosis, and amoebic dysentery,

10

J U LY 5 / / G R E E N V I L L E J O U R N A L . C O M

among other illnesses. Clemson secured the research training grant from the National Institutes of Health specifically for its in-state rival — the University of South Carolina. Kerry Smith, director of Clemson’s EPIC, said Clemson is an academic and research partner with Prisma Health, which also partners with the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine in Greenville. “For us, this was always about provide opportunities for the University of South Carolina Greenville medical students. Clemson University doesn’t have a medical school, and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville is a relatively very new medical school that doesn’t have those

COURTNEY FANT

USC School of Medicine student kind of wet lab opportunities for the medical students,” Smith said. “At the end of the day, it’s what we do at a university — train.” Research on eukaryotic pathogens is critical because the illnesses they cause are harder to treat than typical viruses or infections — eukaryotic pathogens closely mirror the cells in a human body, making it difficult to stop the processes in the invasive cell without harming regular cells. “When you’re designing an antibiotic for bacteria — that would be something that would kill the bacteria — the processes that go on in the bacteria are very different than the processes that go on inside our cells. So, at least on paper, it’s relatively easy to target a process and bacteria, design an antibiotic that will stop that process, and it will very unlikely have any kind of effect on us,” Smith said. “One of the differences in working with eukaryotic pathogens in designing anti-parasitic drugs and anti-fungal drugs is because these processes are so much the same, you have to find something that will block the process and the pathogen and not affect us.” For medical school students, the research experience can help them gain a deeper understanding of the root cause of illnesses they could encounter in practice one day, as well as show them a potential career path toward being a practicing doctor and researcher. Fant plans to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology and do some work in countries with fewer health care options. “That is what actually piqued my inter-

est,” Fant said. “What I’m looking at is fatty acid uptake with ATP depletion — and that’s just a specific component of trying to figure out ways to decrease the amount of transmission [of African sleeping sickness].” There are treatments for African sleeping sickness, but no cure. If left untreated, African sleeping sickness can be fatal — symptoms include fever, severe headaches, fatigue, irritability, and aching muscles and joints. Fant, who is starting her second year of medical school in the fall, said her only prior knowledge of pathogens was from a cell and microbiology class she took. “I’ve definitely learned a lot — one thing is experiments never work out the way you want them to, and you just have to come up with different ways to go around it,” Fant said. The NIH grant will last for five years, and Smith said Clemson will continue to offer an eight-week research program for students at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville each summer throughout the life of the grant. “Part of the goal of that grant and the goal of the center is to grow the center — we’ve trained undergraduate students, we’ve trained graduate students, we’ve trained post-doctoral graduates, and it seemed a natural fit to also train medical students,” Smith said. “Working in a center that is a biomedical research center, any opportunities we can have to partner with a medical school seem natural to us.”

Scholarship Funds make college accessible for talented students

One time-honored way to promote a brighter future is by making it easier for hard-working young people to further their education. Several individuals, families, and organizations have created endowments through the Community Foundation of Greenville that disburse scholarship funds according to

12

J U LY 5 / / G R E E N V I L L E J O U R N A L . C O M

guidelines set up by the donors. They’ve trusted CFG to manage the investment of these funds to be certain their gift continues to support deserving students for years to come. Alice Watkins Senter’s family established a scholarship in her name to honor this poet, mother, and pastor’s wife

whose life was shortened by a tragic illness. The first member of her family to attend college, Watkins blossomed as a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Her poetry was published in the school journal, and she wrote the lyrics to the senior class song. In 1949, she moved with her family to Greenville, where three of her four children graduated from Wade Hampton High School. To celebrate her most productive and happiest times, each year the Senter family awards a scholarship to a Wade Hampton High School student with a love of English literature and poetry. This year’s recipient is Hayley Steves, a junior marshall, cross country participant, and fiction editor of the Fine Arts Center’s Crashtest Magazine. Steves, who earned a GPA of 5.34, said she heard about the Alice Watkins Scholarship from multiple sources, including friends and teachers; it seemed tailormade for someone with her interests. “I’ve always loved reading, and I wanted to write my own stories,” Steves said. “I started going to the Fine Arts Center for Creative Writing my sophomore year, and my love for writing has flourished even more since. I have always planned to major in creative writing or English with a concentration in creative writing, and so this scholarship really fit with what I wanted to do.” Citing the rising cost of tuition outpacing the inflation rate, and the necessity of a degree to get a well-paying job, Steves said the scholarship will help her pay for college without incurring a burden of debt that would follow her after graduation. She’s not certain of her post-graduation plans, but says they may include graduate school. “I do know that I would like to use the education I receive to help other people, however that may be. I’m excited to see where the future will take me!” she said. Other scholarships administered by CFG include two that promote higher education for Greenville County firefighters and their family members, and one that provides financial assistance for the educational advancement of Greenville

County Library staff. Others target economically disadvantaged students and those who plan to enlist in the U.S. Navy. There’s even an Environmental Education Grant designated for a resident of Bermuda to study ecology or a related field to promote conservation of Bermuda’s environment. All serve the common purpose of making higher education more attainable for selected students.

I DO KNOW THAT I WOULD LIKE TO USE THE EDUCATION I RECEIVE TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, HOWEVER THAT MAY BE. I’M EXCITED TO SEE WHERE THE FUTURE WILL TAKE ME. HAYLEY STEVES

Alice Watkins Scholarship recipient

“Providing a scholarship opens the door for economic mobility and personal fulfillment unlike any other charitable gift,” said CFG President Bob Morris. “For many donors it is a way to highlight the impact a special teacher had on their lives by providing an opportunity to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, especially in cases where a student is the first family member to attend college. In the case of the Alice Watkins it was a gratifying way to remember a mother who was inspired as a student and became a teacher devoted to writing, reciting and creating.”

Born and raised in small-town Louisiana, Latreshia Lilly’s theater career grew from church skits and high school musicals to leading and supporting roles at various theater companies. From a young age, she had a knack for standing out — with her unique approach to theater and her famous barking. The summer before 10th grade, Lilly was cast in “101 Dalmatians,” which came to be her most memorable role for her family. “I just was a random dog, and I had the deepest bark,” she says. Telling her fellow pups there needed to be variety among the high-pitched barks, Lilly let out a deep “woof” on stage. “And that is my shining moment with my family because they will never let me live it down, no matter how many roles I play,” she says. As a resident actor going into her third season at Greenville Theatre, Lilly continues to break the norm with her unusual roles. One of her favorite roles at the theater was her portrayal of Clarice Odbody (a.k.a. Clarence Odbody) in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” “The role is normally played by an old-

er white man, and I am a younger black woman,” she says. “It was a very special way to get to tell the story.” Next holiday season, Lilly will once again play the part of an older white man in “A Christmas Carol” as the ghost of Christmas present. “So, maybe that’s who I am,” she says with a laugh. Although she’s played a variety of roles at Greenville Theatre — a butch British woman, a Cockney charwoman, a Harlem woman, a talking wardrobe, and a 9-yearold, Lilly once fought against her niche role as the strong female character. Walking into auditions, she was pegged as the mother or pastor’s wife. “They [would] say, ‘That is a strong female character. That’s it,’” Lilly says. “‘She’s not a love interest. She’s not a dancer.’” While humbly admitting she plays those strong female roles well, Lilly enjoys striving to do more. “In theater, sometimes you want to broaden that spectrum a little bit more,” she says. “You want to be the love interest and the mom and the kid.” As a resident actor at Greenville Theatre, Lilly plays all types of roles. “I really love that you can just be more than what people see as your niche,” she says.

THINGS TO SEE & DO

South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s 2019-20 MainStage season takes audiences on journeys to Narnia, Italy, and beyond as SCCT also makes its way to a new location in 2020. “We’re journeying to our new home. So, all of our shows are as well,” artistic and education director Betsy Bisson says. “They’re all fighting to a journey to get to the end result.” From girl power and the meaning of Christmas to fighting evil and helping friends, SCCT’s upcoming season will warm hearts of both children and adults with its strong messages.

“ELLA ENCHANTED: THE MUSICAL” WHEN: September 7-22, 2019 WHERE: Gunter Theatre

The season opens with the tale of young Ella who has a special ‘gift’ of obedience. Based on Gail Carson Levine’s book, “Ella Enchanted” shows a girl on a quest to solve her own problems. “We love it because it’s girl power,” Bisson says. “It’s all about how you’ve been dealt this hand in life. But you’re not willing to accept it, and you don’t need a prince to fix it for you.” Ella and the prince’s relationship also shares a strong message of friendship. “They know each other for a long time through correspondence,” Bisson says of the two characters. “They improve each other.”

“A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS”

SOUTH CAROLINA CHILDREN’S THEATRE NEW SEASON LINEUP story by MELODY CUENCA photo by AMY RANDALL PHOTOGRAPHY

SCCT’s new season speaks to girl power, Christmas, courage, friendship

WHEN: November 29 - December 8, 2019 WHERE: Gunter Theatre

Just in time for the holidays, Charlie Brown’s classic TV special comes to life on stage. While the town is busy writing letters to Santa and hanging stockings, Charlie feels discouraged by the commercialization of the holiday. So, he sets out on mission to save Christmas by reminding everyone of its meaning. “This is a family tradition kind of show,” Bisson says. “It’s a chance for families to get together remembering the true meaning of Christmas.”

“THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE” WHEN: January 25 - February 2, 2020 WHERE: Gunter Theatre

True to C.S. Lewis’ classic, the Narnia story follows siblings Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter on a magical journey to save Narnia. Battling the evil White Witch and making new friends along the way, the four restore peace to the land. “It isn’t all super sweetness and rainbows, so it’s got some teeth to it,” Bisson says. “But it is exactly the book that my generation grew up with and many since. It’s got all that epic good versus evil.”

“CURIOUS GEORGE: THE GOLDEN MEATBALL” WHEN: April 25 - May 3, 2020 WHERE: Gunter Theatre

The little monkey is back at it again — helping friends and causing chaos. Chef Pisghetti, who George believes to be the best meatball chef, needs help to beat the new meatball maker in town. George is determined for Pisghetti’s meatballs to win The Golden Meatball contest. But, George doesn’t know the chef’s secret ingredient. “We find out that the secret ingredient in Chef Pisghetti’s meatballs is love,” Bisson says.

DR. SEUSS’ “THE CAT IN THE HAT” WHEN: July 11-26, 2020 WHERE: SCCT Arts & Education Center for Children, 153 Augusta St., Greenville As the first show at SCCT’s new theater, “The Cat in the Hat” will be dedicated to a late friend and staff member who last played Fish. Dr. Seuss’ classic story doesn’t change one bit in this whacky, fun, rhyming show. “Everybody has a connection to Cat in the Hat. So it is chaos and mayhem on stage, but it ends up well,” Bisson says. “Fully adults with young hearts will love it as well.” Season subscriptions include a 20 percent discount off “Ella Enchanted: The Musical;” “A Charlie Brown Christmas;” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe;” and “Curious George: The Golden Meatball.” Subscribers will also be guaranteed a seat at the homecoming performance of “The Cat in the Hat” at SCCT’s new theater. Tickets for “The Cat in the Hat” will go on sale to subscribers in March, 2020 and to the general public in May, 2020.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE, THE GB&D WAY

GOLDEN, BROWN & DELICIOUS (GB&D) Part 3 of a 12-part series documenting a food-lover’s farewell to our city BY M EG AN B A X T ER

Recently the hamburger has taken on all sorts of ridiculous fashion trends. Burgers have grown too tall to bite or come layered with 20 ingredients so that even the most discerning palate can’t keep them apart. Hamburgers are street food, and I like them best when they are dressed down. Four and a half ounces is small given the size of some modern burger monstrosities, and GB&D doesn’t mess around with a bucket load of toppings. The burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, special sauce, and a pickle. I could taste each of these in one bite. The brioche-style bun was both soft enough to compact in a bite and thick enough to soak up burger juices without mushing or crumbling.

THE GB&D APPEAL

GB&D is much more than a burger joint. It also serves up a wicked brunch and bone-warming ramen. The simple, counter-order restaurant quickly moves crowds that loop onto the streets. Inside, it mixes the stripped-down feel of remodeling with glamorous charm. Check out the dog portraits painted in the bathroom for a quick smile.
