Great design doesn’t require a great big budget, and that’s important to remember, especially when the headlines herald economic peril day after day. Maybe you’ve had to put off the purchase of your dream home, or that big renovation project, for the foreseeable future. But with the help of the right professional you can still surround yourself with beauty and style, without drowning in debt. Kerry Di Pasquale is just such a designer. A native Brit who spent her formative years in California before being lured East two years ago by the prospect of more affordable real estate, Kerry has an impeccable eye for color and a passion for helping people discover and display their personal style. “I walk away,” she explains. “The design shouldn’t reflect me; it should reflect the people who live there.” Her own sense of panache is evident in every nook and cranny of her Simpsonville home, which she spent the last two years updating from top to bottom and inside out. “It looked like a big apartment, very vanilla,” Kerry remembers, flipping through a stack of before pictures that show white walls, beige carpet and popcorn ceilings. Having moved here on little more than a wing and a prayer, her housing budget was minimal. So she purchased the best home she could afford in a small Simpsonville neighborhood and set to work putting childhood lessons learned from her hardworking parents to good use.

“My parents grew up in England during the war, so they went through … really doing without and being disrupted from their homes,” Kerry says. “We were just taught to make do with what you’ve got and embellish on it. And that’s exactly what I do.” In less than two years the look has gone from vanilla to vivacious, without violating the budget. Here’s how she did it. � 19 �

used inexpensive outdoor furniture and reclaimed architectural elements to pull together a preview of the innovative design visitors will find inside her 2,100 square foot home.

Just across the entryway, the seagrass look is ingeniously mirrored with wallpaper inside the tray. This room was originally a fourth bedroom, which Kerry had no use for so she took out a wall, created an arched doorway to reflect that in the dining room, and converted the space to a comfy TV room, which she uses regularly. ďż˝ 20 ďż˝

The dining room sits just off the entryway, making it the perfect setting for making a statement. Kerry did just that by adding case molding to the doorway and crown molding along the ceiling and inside the tray. The ceiling was further embellished with beadboard paneling inside the tray and a luscious coat of chocolate brown just below. The paneling is repeated in the wainscoting, pulling the space together to create a room worthy of any supper club. Having had her druthers, Kerry would have installed hardwoods throughout, but instead she cleverly inlaid seagrass carpeting here and there. In the dining room, the budget-friendly strategy looks more like a high-end custom touch. ďż˝ 22 ďż˝

The kitchen underwent perhaps the most dramatic transformation. The raised breakfast bar was eliminated and the counter expanded to visually open the space, and the laminate countertops were upgraded to (still affordable) tumbled travertine 2x2 tile. Kerry likes this product for its durability, dirt-masking properties, and ability to take the heat of an errant pan. She also added a trio of fabulous light fixtures over the counter, traded the standard issue appliances for sleek stainless steel, and gave the backsplash the tile treatment. The original cabinetry remains, and has taken on a whole new warmth thanks to its newly stylish surroundings. One of the first things Kerry did was have the popcorn effect scraped from the ceilings. She says this is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project, but weekend warriors take warning: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a tidy one.

The kitchen opens onto the living room, where Kerry used one of her favorite tricks. Using simple molding to form a frame above the mantel, she created a canvas limited only by the imagination. She chose to paint a contrasting shade within the borders, but the space could be filled with wallpaper, a mural, virtually anything. The seagrass carpeting inlay is repeated here, and meshes nicely with the coastal touches near and dear to this California girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart. Throughout the home Kerry replaced lighting and ceiling fans, added beefier baseboards and crown molding, and replaced all the hinges and doorknobs with brushed nickel hardware. She also replaced all the closet doors with unobtrusive folding doors. ďż˝ 26 ďż˝

In one guest bedroom Kerry mounted a sheet of galvanized steel behind the bed and, voila, a chic headboard for only $25. A section of electrical conduit does duty as a curtain rod, and the effect is softened with bright, feminine colors and delicate chandelier lighting to achieve a look that is anything but industrial. ďż˝ 27 ďż˝

In another guest room fat horizontal stripes ring the room, giving the illusion of a larger space and allowing Kerry to cram the room with furniture without it looking, well, crammed in. Kerry purchased very little new furniture for her new home, but instead repurposed her existing pieces, hand-me-downs from friends, or castoffs discovered alongside the road. A pair of picnic table benches from a bygone Italian phase were upholstered with dollar store cushions and fun fabrics, and the two went their separate ways to provide pretty perches at the foot of the guest and master beds. The substantial bedside table in the master bedroom is a dresser given by a friend whose dog had chewed the handles. Kerry liked the look, left it as is, and the piece has served her well in a number of rooms. When knobs and handles do need replacing, picture frames need embellishing, or a piece needs a general spiffing up, Kerry dips into her extensive collection of seashells and grabs the glue gun. photos � 28 � story � 31 �

This inviting space is filled with still more spruced up thrift store pieces, as well as artfully arranged family pictures and mementos, a personal touch you’ll find in every room of Kerry’s home – even the laundry room. 

Ella’s room Pink … it’s always been a popular color for a little girl’s room. And when it’s paired with tutus – an instant classic. This is Ella’s room. Ella Markalunas (age 5) loves her beautiful fairy canopy over her twin-sized white iron bed. Her Mom found the bedding, printed with birds, flowers and fairies, in England. A handpainted trunk resides at the foot of the bed for extra storage. Ella, her sister Lily (age 2 1/2), and their buddy Bentley spend time at the ballet bar twirling to their favorite music.

Winston’s room Curse of the Black Pearl a few years ago, it didn’t take much deliberation to decide on a theme for his room in their new house. His black, boat-shaped bed flies the Skull and Crossbones flag and is named the Black Pearl in honor of Winston’s favorite character from the movie, Jack Sparrow. In keeping with the theme, artist Janet Graziano painted the walls with sea creatures and a setting sun covered by ominous clouds. He and his grandfather Tony made Winston’s favorite item in his room, the small sailboat sitting on the pirate chest. Tony also made the chest. A hammock, themed bedding and a net with sea creatures on the wall in the corner above the bed complete the setting. � 40 �

Jana’s room Jana Sanders (age 9), seen here with her sisters Leah (age 7) and Bella Vita (age 4), has “always” had an interest in American Indians. Luckily, they are the granddaughters of artist Janet Graziano so all three sisters have hand-painted murals in their rooms. Jana of course chose Indians and horses as her theme. The mother horse with her colt is her favorite. Following along with the theme are her American Girl doll Kia on her horse, the dream catcher, the horse wallpaper border and numerous horse figurines. The Indian village mural (seen in close-up) is on the wall leading into the sleeping area of Jana’s bedroom.

if you notice a beautifully decorated room and wonder what gives it such style, look down – you’re probably standing on it.

rugs are often the starting point in decorating a room, and they serve as the foundation for everything that comes next, from furniture selection and placement to fabric and paint choices. since they are often one of the more expensive items purchased for a room, it’s important to choose the right one – sometimes a difficult task since they come in so many colors, patterns and textures. at mcabee’s Custom Carpet inc. in greenville, customers know they’ll have a massive variety of options when they see six large rooms filled to the brim with thousands of samples. the staff, led by Becky lanford, can help clients – homeowners or interior designers – navigate the selection, which is divided by mill and price point. “Clients might come in with their fabrics selected, or just with blueprints, and we’ll figure out where rugs will go,” lanford says. at mcabee’s, the options are multiplied because rugs can be put together using more than one color or pattern. “we add borders and do different kinds of edging,” she says. her father, Jim mcabee, started the business almost 50 years ago and patented his own method for creating custom pieces. while color and pattern are what people notice first, lanford says size and shape are equally important in a room, and her company creates custom sizes and shapes as well as stair runners to coordinate spaces. tracy fowler, owner of fowler interiors in greenville, says she often chooses a rug first when

designing a room. “It’s much more efficient if you start with the rug,” she says. “It tends to set the color palette, though the rug doesn’t have to have every color that is present in a scheme.” Size and placement of rugs can define conversation or dining areas, and Fowler says a common mistake is using a rug that is too small. “In a living room or great room setting, my first preference is to have all of the feet of the furniture in that area on the rug,” she says. “If you have the furniture partially off of the rug, you never get that cohesive, conversational feel. It just doesn’t feel as connected.” Choosing a rug Lanford says the first consideration should be how a space is used. She starts by asking, “Is it a high traffic area? Do you have pets or young kids?” If so, she suggests avoiding natural materials like sisal or mountain grass, which is a popular seller but is difficult to clean.

Recent trends at her business include textile carpets that mimic the look of natural materials like sisal. “If you want a natural look but have pets or kids, it’s a good alternative, and it’s softer,” she says. Animal prints are hot, but Lanford doesn’t call them a trend because they have such staying power. “Twenty years ago, I thought it was trendy, but it stayed. It’s never gone

out of style,” Lanford says, adding that she’s now seeing more colorful animal prints in shades like red or green.

For a more subdued but inviting look, she enjoys putting together rugs that are the same color but different textures, creating a tone-on-tone effect. According to Fowler, a rug is a huge investment, and quality and durability can vary widely, so she stresses the importance of buying from someone you trust. “And make sure you love the rug,” she says, “because it needs to last for a while.”

It might be easier to say what didn’t change in the master bath – the entire area was gutted and totally redesigned. The new sink vanity, from Architectural Warehouse in Landrum, with its new bronze faucets, replaces the separate sinks that were divided by a wall before. Wall and floor tile with a glass tile border and inserts in the floor are from Clayton Tile. Light fixtures in a craftsman style are from The Lighting Gallery. The master bedroom had fewer changes that are no less stunning. The ceiling was raised and vaulted with a new ceiling fan and adjustable recessed lighting added. The walls dividing the bedroom from the bath area were both removed and the new walls were brought farther into the sleeping area to provide more space in the bathroom. This also allowed for the addition of the see-thru fireplace. Hardwood flooring replaced the carpeting. New atrium doors replaced the dated sliding glass doors. A comfy leather chair and ottoman with a side table and new lamp provide a cozy spot for reading or just enjoying the fireplace. Sumptuous silk draperies, all new bed linen, the addition of an armoire that used to reside in the kitchen and a warm paint color, Sensational Sand by SherwinWilliams, complete the impressive redo. ďż˝ 60 ďż˝

The five steps to creating a garden design are: • Determine your needs for an area (in this case, purely ornamental). • Decide on the level of maintenance that you want. • Determine the conditions of your site (soil type, amount of sun or shade, drainage, soil acidity or alkalinity). • Create your design scheme. • Choose plants that will meet all of the above criteria. When starting anew in a garden bed, as we are here, you’ll first want to amend the soil. Over time, soil becomes compacted and nutrients leach

from the soil. Recommended soil amendments are homemade compost, animal manure and alfalfa, mushroom compost or topsoil. Some experts would add green sand and bone meal to provide extra nutrients. As her family traveled from Tokyo to Nagoya to Paris to Greenville, “there was always one tree in each yard that we remembered,” she says. “Our friends would change, customs would change, we would change, but the tree would always remain constant.” Though she has explored trees though ceramics, painting and other forms, her latest project involves creating large, threedimensional trees out of wood. After working in New York for many years, where she didn’t have much space, she loves spending time in her airy-yet-cozy Greenville studio, where she can “work large.”

The first step in creating a tree is cutting out shapes and gluing them to paper, seeking a form she finds interesting. She uses colorful paper in whatever pattern appeals to her, though the patterns aren’t part of the final design.

When cutting out her models, Yuri focuses not just on the shapes, but what is visible in the open spaces. “It’s also the light and the shadow and what you can see behind the flat planes,” she says.

Next comes creating small three-dimensional “maquettes,” or models, which allow her to see which shapes will stand securely. The trees will be made of two pieces of wood that slide together like a puzzle, with no nails or other fasteners, so it’s important to create a solid design.

She then uses a scroll saw to cut out a small wooden model to again test the sturdiness of the design. Though avoiding nails and fasteners harkens back to Japanese tradition, Yuri has a more practical reason – the trees are simple to take apart and ship. � 78 �

Next comes the final product, and though she uses her models as guides, she may add or remove certain parts of the design as the mood strikes. She uses a jigsaw to cut the pieces, which is difficult because the jigsaw doesn’t allow the same level of detail as her scroll saw. Once she achieves the form she likes, it’s time to sand, prime, sand again, and apply three coats of paint, sanding between each coat. She loves designing and cutting the trees, but finds painting and finishing the most mundane part. However, each step is necessary to make sure the wood is smooth, the paint adheres properly and the right color is achieved. In this piece, she kept her basic treeand-umbrella design, but moved the

three raindrops beneath the tree limbs and added an owl. The piece reflects a respect for nature, which is frequently found in Japanese culture and art. “A tree provides shelter for us,” Yuri says. “Sometimes, when it’s rainy and windy and cold, and the trees are bare, you wish they had an umbrella to protect themselves.” Though Yuri says she is still in the experimental stage with the trees, she hopes to eventually create an entire forest of them to dot the landscape of her home. She then plans to have a kid-friendly picnic event, inviting friends and family to congregate among the trees she loves – both those created by nature and those she created by hand. 

As a citizen of the world, artist Yuri Tsuzuki has managed to create her own personal haven, tucked among the trees in Greenville. Yuri grew up traveling between Nagoya, Japan, and Greenville thanks to the family business, TNS Mills, which operated here. Fluent in Japanese, English and French, she was immersed in a variety of cultures from a young age, which today influences her work as an artist – helping her understand what makes people different as well as what makes us the same. Now, her 2-year-old son, K, is following in her footsteps, learning English, French, Japanese and Spanish thanks to his multi-lingual, globe-trotting parents. Yuri’s husband, Knute Hammarskjold, is Swedish, though the couple met in Kuwait and now Knute spends much of his time working in Bogata, Colombia. It’s a busy life, but Yuri wouldn’t have it any other way, and she loves returning to Greenville as frequently as possible to enjoy her studio, which she designed with friend and architect John Kisner.

Yuri wanted to construct the studio on the property of the family home near Cleveland Park, but she wanted to have the absolute minimum impact on the surroundings, particularly the trees she treasures. The builders managed to save every tree, including a favorite dogwood that snakes upward between the studio and the adjacent guest house. She decided to build the studio on a pre-existing detached garage, constructing a second level to expand the space and add light. On the lower level, she added

as many windows as possible, and included metal grating in the ceiling so the light from the upper level could flood the gallery space below. The floor, once concrete, is now hardwood, and the walls are covered with her work, hung on an innovative Australian system that uses no nails. Instead, wires move back and forth across the walls, allowing her to switch out art and arrangements whenever the mood strikes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I change the space so much,â&#x20AC;? she says. Currently on display is a series of paintings called The Deer Ladies,

inspired by a trip to Morocco, and some jewelry left over from a showing, dangling from a tree limb hanging on the wall. A favorite feature on the lower level is the red section in the center of the ceiling, which seems to pour natural light into the room. The square is simply painted with a fluorescent red paint, giving the illusion of a light source even when it’s dark out. Though it wasn’t intentional, the update, which took eight months, includes several supports that look like torii gates, which in Japan are often openings to a shrine. The design – two poles with a bar across the top – can be seen in several places in the studio. “That was not conscious, but it just happened that way, which was pretty magical,” she says. Up the metal stairs is the second level, added for use as a work space. as display space. Easy-toclean Formica countertops surround a large island work table. The room is completely encircled with windows, allowing her to be inspired by the trees surrounding the studio. “Each window is like a painting,” she says, and points to a painting inspired by a favorite tree on the property. Everything is related, from the tree to the painting to sculpture to jewelry to wood pieces to a painted garment she is designing. The studio allows her to indulge her love of variety, both in scale and medium. “That’s how my mind works, and for me, the art forms are all connected. Each one lends itself to teach me how to do something else.” Outside, the building blends effortlessly into the leafy environment, with exteriors made of metal that was designed to rust. Though space was limited – because of limited square footage and her desire to save every tree – Yuri managed to add a small guest house next to the studio with the same deepred, rusted exterior. The guest house is only five feet � 90 �

wide on one side, but feels much larger thanks to expansive windows, high ceilings and smart design. Alcoves display her art, and a large sculpture sits on a table she made from a salvaged chunk of a chopped-down tree. From the driveway, the guest house and studio, which are two separate buildings, appear to be one, with seamlessly sloping rooflines that create aesthetic harmony with the slope of the land and the surrounding trees. It’s another example of the eye for detail and love of nature that is a hallmark of her work. ABOVE

of becoming a journalist. She fulfilled that goal with a job at NHK, a Japanese television station, working in New York for a show called “Good Morning Japan,” and while she yearned to cover galleries and the arts scene, she was assigned the finance

beat. She continued to create art as a hobby while earning a master’s degree in art history from Columbia University, and eventually left journalism to pursue art full time. Her work quickly found a following, and has been covered in publications such as The New York Times and Town & Country. She currently sells her pieces privately and through a gallery in Japan, and her ultimate goal as an artist is to have a piece in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For now, she’s content to travel the world with her family and to spend as much time as possible in her custom-made studio, where she can look out on her green surroundings and experiment. Though she still travels extensively, “I really do enjoy being here, because I have the studio, and it’s just the way I want it,” she says. “Growing up, just like now, we weren’t always here, so that makes it special to come home.” 

I spent the early years of my marrIed lIfe In an old but charmIng cIrca 1920 north maIn street house In greenvIlle.It was filled with one-of-a-kind antiques and beautiful objet d’art that I had collected as an antique dealer. after more than a decade of renovation projects (with much of the labor being supplied by “moi”) I eventually burned out on the old house. so one evening over a candlelight dinner I told my husband I wanted to build a brand-new house. I never imagined that he would present me with a challenge that would blow me clear out of my Jimmy choo stilettos. “yes, dear,” he said, “you can build a new house under one condition: let’s auction everything with this house and do a new look.” “everything?” I replied. “yes, dear, the furniture and everything. We will use the money from the auction to furnish the new house.” In his infinite wisdom he was convinced I would never say yes to such a radical notion. however, over dinner that night I agreed that I would take only two small boxes of favored objects from our house. honestly, it was one of the most liberating processes of my adult life. It was a powerful reminder that every material object we are entrusted with during this lifetime is only on loan to us anyway. they are, after all, only objects. so it was a simple question for me when asked to identify my favorite object. It is “kite boy,” as I affectionately call him. no one has ever been able to identify his sculptor or date. he may be worth as much as my beloved convertible or he may be worth 2 cents… it is really not relevant. for to me, he represents youth and the simple pleasures that are all around us if we would only slow down and take hold of them. When I look at him I imagine the most glorious spring afternoon with the breeze brisk on his cheeks. I can almost hear him giggle as his kite takes flight. after all, it is the story the object tells that resonates with the heart, never the object itself.  94 | at home

Anna moved to Greenville in 2007 after a varied career in Florida that included real estate, decorating, training at the Cordon Culinary Institute in Miami and much more. She now pours her passion for creating into Cupcake Couture and Catering, which bakes custom cakes, made from scratch in small quantities and decorated by top pastry chefs and decorators. Her two favorite product testers are her children, Matthew, 4, and Madeline, 3. First and foremost, the offerings at a cupcake party should taste fabulous, but the aesthetics run a close second. “I’m all about color and the visual,” Anna says. Though she isn’t a big “theme person,” (since people often go overboard), spring is the perfect time for bright colors and a variety of florals, both in décor and cupcake design. So call a few friends, try a couple of cupcake recipes, and get creative. Offer coffee, tea or wine, and see how simple spring entertaining can be! 

Putting it together Anna Featherston says a few tips can take a cupcake party from fun to fantastic. • The featured recipe includes a Chambord glaze, so it doesn’t lend itself to a wine pairing. However, Anna likes to pair white cake with light, white wines such as Riesling or a buttery Chardonnay.

• Chocolate cake pairs nicely with a heavier red wine such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet.

• For tea, she suggests Earl Gray or a rose-infused tea, which will accent the cakes without detracting from the dessert flavors.

• If you don’t typically entertain, keep it simple and small, and perhaps just invite a few close friends.

• Parties in spring are all about color, so don’t be afraid to bring bright hues into the décor through flowers, napkins, plates, etc. White linens are a classic backdrop, and fresh flowers are a must!

• Keep the cakes light and fruity, with spring fruits such as strawberries, mangos, melons or citrus.

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract (Madagascar) ¾ cup buttermilk 2 tablespoons Chambord (raspberry liqueur)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 12-cup Bundt pan with cooking spray; dust with 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Set aside. Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Place 2 cups of granulated sugar and ¾ cup butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3 or 4 minutes). Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add rind, lemon juice and vanilla; beat until combined. Beating at low speed, add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to sugar mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture; beat just until combined (batter will be thick so don’t be alarmed). Spoon batter into pan. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes to one hour, depending on your oven. Remove from oven when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Loosen cake from sides of pan using a metal spatula. Place a plate upside down on top of cake; invert onto plate. Pierce cake liberally with a toothpick. Brush 2 tablespoons of liqueur over the warm cake.

Chambord Glaze ¾ cup powdered sugar 2 ½ tablespoons Chambord 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon butter (melted)

Combine powdered sugar, 2 ½ tablespoons liqueur, 1 tablespoon juice and 1 tablespoon butter, stirring with a whisk until smooth. Drizzle slowly over warm cake. Cool completely. Makes approximately 16 servings.

Red Velvet Cupcakes 3 1/2 cups cake flour (not self-rising) 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened 2 cups sugar 3 large eggs, at room temperature 6 tablespoons red food coloring

Creamy Vanilla Frosting 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups milk 4 sticks unsalted butter, softened 2 cups sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 1 1/2 teaspoons cider vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

Preheat oven to 350Â°F. Line two 12-cup muffin pans with a paper liner. Arrange oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. To make the cake: In a small bowl, sift the cake flour and set aside. In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar until very light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. In a small bowl, whisk together the red food coloring, cocoa and vanilla. Add to the batter and beat well. In a measuring cup, stir the salt into the buttermilk. Add to the batter in three parts alternating with the flour. With each addition, beat until the ingredients are incorporated, but do not overbeat. In a small bowl, stir together the cider vinegar and baking soda. Add to the batter and mix well. Using a rubber spatula, scrape down the batter in the bowl, making sure the ingredients are well blended and the batter is smooth. Pour batter into 24 muffin pans. Bake about 20 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean, switching the positions of the pans halfway through baking. Cool in the pans 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack before icing with Creamy Vanilla Frosting.

In a medium-size saucepan, whisk the flour into the milk until smooth. Place over medium heat and, stirring constantly, cook until the mixture becomes very thick and begins to bubble, 10-15 minutes. Cover with waxed paper placed directly on the surface and cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes.

hen the double doors of the Inspiration Home (iHome) are thrown open on April 17th, visitors will get an eyeful, or “i-full” as it were. Not your average dream home, the iHome goes well beyond most ordinary show dwellings stuffed with all manner of innovations – most of which are often out of the average homeowner’s reach both in terms of cost and availability.

Instead, partners Jerry Fay and Chris Rogers (center) of Milestone Custom Homes approached this project by applying their company mission “to build exclusive homes with inclusive building practices,” with a dose of accessible practicality. The result is a seamless blend of old-world craftsmanship, innovative design and stateof-the-art technology that can be found in every corner of this gracious, three-story, 8,400-square-foot home reminiscent of an Italian country manse. Located in the elegant enclave better known as Cobblestone in Simpsonville, the iHome was designed from the ground up to create “a true showcase for products and best practices” similar to what he’d seen in other parts of the country, says Fay. It’s something he says has never been duplicated in Greenville. “We call ourselves the new breed of builder,” Fay says on a day spent scurrying around to oversee the finishing touches placed in the year-long project. This new breed is hardwired to be intrepid. Despite the recent downturn in the real estate and new construction markets, Fay and Rogers confidently forged ahead to make their vision a reality.

“We really wanted to show we are not building the houses that were built 20 years ago,” says Fay as he describes a host of features that make the house functional and efficient. Though sustainability and sheer size don’t often go hand-in-hand, Fay notes that the iHome is a living example of how to incorporate energy-efficient materials and systems, as well as smart planning, to reduce the overall cost of maintenance. Beginning with the bare earth, Fay explains that when the property was graded (quite tricky due to the 30-foot drop in the backyard), massive boulders were salvaged for use in the retaining walls. Then landscape designers Graham Kimak and David Van De Water of Arbor Engineering Inc. drew up a plan that used many native plants for their ability to thrive in heavy clay soil and withstand high heat and drought conditions. A new species of grass called “Blue Heat” was used for sod. It stays green like a fescue, but fills itself in like a Bermuda, and is extremely droughttolerant – the best of all worlds. Speaking of drought, the Hunter ET System sprinkler can sense the rate of evaporation in the soil and moisture in the air so that the landscaping is only watered when necessary. When it does rain, permeable pavers reduce the amount of runoff and erosion.

The “clean and green” pool uses only natural table salt to create pure chlorine and the spa has a high-efficiency gas heater that heats quickly and is economical to run. Equal care was taken inside. The frame was treated with an antimicrobial, Icynene insulation was used in the walls to make it tight as a drum, and the BioStar Program ensures ongoing indoor air quality. Even though Fay is quite proud of the work he and Rogers have done to bring this project to completion, he is quick to point out that there is another way the iHome will be a source of inspiration and connection to the community. All proceeds from the tour of the home will go to the Upstate South Carolina affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “We chose Susan G. Komen for the Cure because this organization inspires people to live every day. This collaboration brings a deeper meaning to every brick in the home,” asserts Fay. It is a cause close to his own heart, as his wife is a cancer survivor. Ultimately, the strength of the concept and of the well-appointed house itself is that it embraces sustainability and a commitment to quality on a grand scale that never feels imposing. Inside and out, the colors are warm, the furnishings are comfortable, and the abundance of natural light just feels good. There are plenty of places to imagine kicking back, snuggling up, laughing, or playing. And Fay encourages visitors to do just that: “Get in, touch it, see it, and feel it. That’s why we built it that way.”

ust behind the bubbled glass panes of the entryway lies a foyer that is more than just a passage to the main part of the house – it is truly a room of its own. Carey Taylor points out that architectural elements such as the barrel ceiling and a long paneled wall were just begging for large statement pieces. After painting that ceiling a soft gray-blue and applying glaze over the wheat colored walls, she further kept the look from getting too heavy by choosing a sideboard in light wood. Mixing old with new and eye-catching accents allows residents and guests to ease into the house and experience a cherished collection that says, “welcome to my home.”

uzi Smith has traveled to Italy many times and was eager to reproduce the relaxed hospitality of an Italian farmhouse kitchen at the iHome. Cabinets in complementary shades of ivory and black, a stained hood finished in plaster, a hammered copper sink and the heavy wooden beams all suggest a primitive look reminiscent of a typical Italian villa that has been in a family for generations.

he vaulted, paneled ceiling and massive fireplace lend extraordinary warmth to the keeping room just off the kitchen area. Rather than fill the space with fussy fabric, Suzi Smith selected black raised panel shutters for the windows and leather and chenille coverings for the sofa and chairs. A charming painting of a hunting dog along with mounted deer antlers hint at the look of a traditional lodge without being too literal. Hints of avocado green along with a scattering of plants make the room feel fresh and alive.

he main living space is truly a room with a view: from it you can see the entrance, the kitchen and the outdoors, a true connecting point for the entire house. With that in mind, Hamilton and Dickens elected to blend timeless elements with comfortable furnishings to create a warm and inviting space just made for relaxing. Starting with a neutral wall palette, they brought in accents of gold and brown. The subtle impact of paprika brightens the space between the beams in the coffered ceiling. Antique wooden boxes, leather-bound books and a delightful landscape over the fireplace (actually part of Lindaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own collection) play well with the deeply cushioned sofa and chairs swathed in herringbone tweed and tapestry. The cushions are

intentionally loose and unattached, taking away any hint of formality and inviting one and all to curl up or sprawl out in front of the fire. A wall of glass doors separates the great room from the screen porch, its own thoughtfully appointed space with a professional gas grill and another stone fireplace. The designers didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to compete with the gorgeous view of the pool and landscape so they stuck with a simple table and chairs by Summer Classics in a lightweight metal that makes it easy to rearrange. On the opposite wall where a large piece of furniture would just get in the way, the two chose a garden mirror that imitates a Palladian-style window to give a reflection of the space without being intrusive.

he designers of Ethan Allen say that tradition was their guide but not their ruler as they interpreted the feel of a Tuscan home in the master suite. Opting instead for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Villa Fresh,â&#x20AC;? their starting point was a relaxing monochromatic palette to which they added a modern twist of greens and blues. The sitting room with its

dramatic view inspired them to create a gracious European room to offer the homeowners a quiet retreat for morning coffee or reading their favorite book. And that was precisely what Neena Dorsey and Lauren Middlekauff had in mind when they planned a retreat for a small boy with big dreams. They added the bamboo ladder for the express purpose of climbing to scale those imaginary heights and a zebra rug to rest on when visions of jousts and hunts tire him out. Rustic cane furniture and burlap window treatments provide a neutral canvas for the little man to add his own collections of dinosaurs, racecars, rocks or whatever he’s into at the moment.

Charisma owner Lisa Bass believes she honed a painter’s eye for color as she worked toward a degree in fine art. Together with Rhonda Sanders, they have developed a business “all about being different, fun and quirky,” and have been doing model homes throughout the southeast for years.

t’s a big bedroom for a small person, so Lisa Bass and Rhonda Sanders set to work adding bright colors, whimsical accents and eclectic elements such as the faux picket fence wall paper to bring it more to scale. The scarlet fabric of the duvet and curtains gave the designers a palette of punchy colors to create a room that was not too precious and could easily grow with the young lady who lives in it for years to come. The bright colors meander into the bathroom, where slim, crimson rectangles of glass tile line the shower walls and green zebra prints decorate a rug. Rustic rattan chairs, a weathered bamboo bed, mirrors like daisies, and a dragonfly wall sculpture bring together this lovely garden of delights.

Punctuated by walls as deep blue as a summer sky, the space is like its own small cottage with its bead board accents, flowers dancing across the walls, and delicate, sheer custom window treatments that appear like watercolor paintings on fabric. The fetching pink bed from Young America by Stanley is certainly a place to snooze, but the window seat with its comfy cushion and hidden storage, invites a young girl to dream. Bright citrus and bold graphics will continue to charm as this little girl grows into a young lady.

Playing off their favorite themes of rustic country cottages and beachside bungalows, designers Neena Dorsey and Lauren Middlekauf pulled together a look that combines the two seamlessly. An oversized sectional sofa in neutral taupe is dressed with piles of pillows sporting stenciled leaves and petals in turquoise and olive. The ottoman doing

double duty as a coffee table also features fabric with a mod blue scroll design. Faux antelope heads flank an abstract landscape on one deep gold wall, but the real focal point of this room is the round chair-and-a-half. Covered in soft velour the color of sand-washed sea glass, it is impossible to resist climbing on and tucking up to watch a film, gaze out the window or take a nap.

ven though the kitchen on the lower level flows into the billiard room, Delice Winters wanted to create a totally different and unexpected mood. Taking cues from an Italian coffee shop, she set oversized Sherill chairs with textured fabrics and an elegant antique bench around a round cocktail table. In another part of the room a card table is set up for games and accented with prints of old maps. The wet bar area gets a pop of color with a bold speckled countertop that boasts a bright fruit arrangement.
