If one were to assign specific roles to this Renaissance couple, Janette is the artist and gardener. Over a decade ago, she oversaw the construction of her Greenville home from the ground up, and can often be found perched atop the uppermost floor in her visual arts studio. Having an extensive academic and experiential background in art history, she uses a palette of vibrant oils to create what appear to be chaotic abstracts, but in reality are a marriage of smoldering ardor and assured technical precision that can take months to complete. Her work is a tangible corollary to her commitment as an artist, and similarly her garden thrives as
evidence of her allegiance to fresh, wholesome foods. Walking through the greenery in peak season, one can find a bouquet of brilliant, vital herbs for almost any dish, as well as plump vegetables and fruit-bearing trees. It’s Janette who primarily tends to the wild delicacies, but it’s Renato who puts them to use in the kitchen. Renato is the chef, philosopher and historian of the household. Finding fascination not only in the combination of various ingredients—and how they come together to make a single divine flavor—but also in the “why” of any given recipe, Renato takes pleasure in the slow revelation of value over time.

Dark walls, a dramatic coffered ceiling, a massive limestone fireplace and multipaneled French doors are visually stunning elements in the step-down living room.
This is especially evident in his enthusiasm for creating complex liqueurs from scratch, a process that takes a keen understanding of chemical interaction and the patience to wait a minimum of six months for a healthy result. Having written a book on the subject, Renato takes particular pride in knowing how to mix just the right herbs, fruits and extractions with alcohol to make the perfect palate pleaser, as well as possessing the ability to regale dinner guests with the rich history of why such mixtures were first made—sometimes centuries ago—and for what purpose. Given Janette and Renato’s stand against the quick, cheap acquisition of inferior goods that has become a global obsession, it makes perfect sense that neither one of them can remember a time when they weren’t involved in the Slow Food movement. Originating in Italy in the 1980s as a protest to the invasive dissemination of fast food restaurants throughout the country, Janette and Renato happily proliferate the movement’s ideals in its motherland (at their stunning Tuscan villa, Sant’Andrea, in Cortona), as well as show full, active support for Slow Food USA, which has been gaining momentum for over two decades here in the states.

Janette, currently acting president of the local chapter, Slow Food Upstate, has found the organization to be an invaluable outlet for both her and Renato to share the simple pleasures of “good, clean and fair” food, and has helped provide public
validation and glorification for a worldview they’ve cherished privately for years. And as many dinner guests can testify, a meal designed as a true labor of love absorbs more profoundly than just stomachdeep, and truly nourishes the soul.

On some given Saturday evening, while many Americans are staggering off to the googleplex after filling up on franchised abominations, Janette and Renato might be scouring the local woods for wild mushrooms, checking the progress of a particularly complicated liqueur, or overseeing the quiet cultivation of next season’s harvest. Though it may be a relative eternity before they reap any reward, rest assured these two have found a staunch bliss in delayed gratification. “You can paint prettier wood than you can buy,” says John Ivey Rainey, who’s been creating realistic decorative finishes since 2001. “I can paint the most desirable parts of the tree, even if that wood isn’t available.” That’s one reason his business has been booming lately, as customers seek ways to get the look of oldgrowth heartwood or other hard-to-find materials, often painted right on top of Sheetrock or plywood. “Right now, my most popular are the pine finishes,” says Rainey. “Reclaimed wood is very popular, buying wood from an old building and using it in your house. People with formal homes with columns and fancy woodwork are paying me to make it look like wood that came from an old mill—like old weathered pine.” Rainey, who grew up in Greenville and attended Wofford College, went on to the City and Guilds of London’s decorative restoration program in Asheville. While he planned to study building
Before restoration, he fell in love with faux finishing along the way, and a career was born. He learned from a third-generation decorative artist who uses old English techniques, particularly “faux bois,” or wood graining any surface to imitate real wood. Faux painting or finishing has been used for millennia, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt. It has seen surges in popularity over the years, and evidence points to increasing demand now, as people seek the look of older materials in newer homes and as the supply of sought-after old-growth trees diminishes. Popular techniques include marbleizing, wood graining, color washes, glazes, strie (creating soft streaks of color to simulate fabrics) and rag painting.

Rainey specializes in wood grains, including faux elm, yellow pine, cypress and mahogany, but he also replicates marble, stone, metal and other surfaces that catch a decorator’s or homeowner’s eye. He relishes challenges such as a recent project in which a client asked him to recreate on a wall the subtle, mottled appearance of an oyster shell. Another client showed him an English tea caddy covered in tortoiseshell. “They wanted their ceiling to look like the top of a tea caddy,” he says, and he found a way to create an uncanny match.

The process typically involves many layers of color along with a variety of tools and brushes, many ordered from England, which go with him to each job. Going into a custom project, “I never know what unexpected tool I will need,” he says. “When I need it, it’s there.” He prizes his collection of brushes, from tiny tools for fine graining to eight-inch wide brushes used primarily for glazing. Carla Cianfichi, who owns Embellishments Decorative Painting in Greer, also has accumulated an array of tools, including brushes, trowels, scrapers, rags and stencils. She uses them to paint everything from walls and ceilings to furniture and even windows.

A recent assignment involved using plaster with metallic flakes to impart a luster to a room. She used a color mesh technique that combines two colors to create a soft finish. She also painted a custom design on the ceiling using metallic plaster and a lambswool tool. She likes the effect of metallics, which she says can achieve a look like marble but with more of a shimmer. Formerly an art director for a publishing company, Cianfichi began as a decorative painter 12 years ago, inspired by a friend who did decorative finishes in another town. She attended conventions and took courses, but says learning by practicing has been the most helpful in achieving certain looks. She says decorative finishes are popular because they offer depth and movement that wallpaper can’t match. While people often tire of wallpaper, a top-quality finish never looks tired or dated. “When I started, I had to argue with people not to do wallpaper, to try this instead,” she says. “Now people usually want some faux finishes somewhere. They want the look of the wood or marble or marquetry, and if it’s done well, it will look real.” ��

Though stencils often have a negative connotation for clients, today’s products can offer a unique and elegant look. “Stencils have come a long way,” Cianfichi says, and she often customizes them for clients, which “opens up a world of possibilities. It’s mind-boggling.” She sometimes uses the custom stencils in untraditional ways, including creating patterns on mirrors with acids, creating an antiqued look. Rainey glazes walls to create an aged finish and add depth. Metallic finishes, including silver leaf and gold leaf, are still fairly popular, especially if they are distressed to look old. “That’s a common request of people hiring me, to make something look old,” he says. But he primarily focuses on matching authentic woods or other materials. “If you have an Asian mantel made of elm, and want built-in bookcases that appear to be made of the same elm, I can copy it on plywood,” he says. “I’m happy to make the room look harmonious.”

18th Century Chinese Porcelain writ ten By SAr AH S tePHenSOn PHOtOS By t. J. Ge t z
Chinese porCelain holds a fascination for collectors worldwide, and many feel that its beauty has never been surpassed. The Chinese invented the process of making porcelain during the Tang dynasty (AD 618-906). The first great collectors of porcelain were the Chinese Emperors themselves. They nurtured its technical and artistic development to the point that the world was clamoring for the beautiful objects that only the Chinese knew how to make. The porcelain covered in this article is limited to that which was made during the 17th and 18th century. Before we look at porcelain, a bit of history is in order. The fall of the Ming Dynasty in 1643 and the rise of the Ch’ing (Qing) Dynasty in 1644 brought not just vast political changes but also significant changes in the decorative arts to China, especially in porcelain production and decoration. The overthrow of the Chinese ruling dynasty by the Manchu was immensely humiliating to the Chinese but it eventually proved to be in China’s best interest because the Manchu united the feuding northern and southern areas of China, established a diplomatic relationship with Japan and secured its northern border. ��

Additionally, the Manchu were more interested in preserving and adopting Chinese customs than in destroying thousands of years of tradition.

The first emperor of the Ch’ing Dynasty, Shunzhi, ruled from 1644 until 1661. He brought peace and stability to the country so that the next emperor, Kangxi (16621722) was able to rebuild destroyed kilns and reestablish porcelain production for the palace, the home market and the export market. Many changes in porcelain decoration were introduced during his reign and remained in vogue until export trade declined in the 19th century. The three emperors most responsible for the explosion in both quality and quantity were Kangxi (1662-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795). Most innovations occurred during Kangxi’s reign and were refined and perfected in the succeeding reigns. Kangxi oversaw the transition from the Ming blue and white to the new polychrome decorations of the Ch’ing Dynasty. The first pair of plates (Image A) shows an example of the Imari palette. The plate on the left is decorated with an overall river and landscape scene using blue and iron red underglaze and over the glaze aubergine purple with several shades of green and a final application of gold. This palette and the famille verte palette overlap in colors. Note that the decoration covers the entire plate and that there are no borders, panels

or reserves. This type of plate would have been made for the home market. The plate on the right, in the traditional Imari palette, is decorated in underglaze blue and iron red with gold highlights. The center is decorated with various flowers with gold highlights and the narrow border around the cavetto (the well of the plate) with red crosshatch design and four reserves of blue flower and tendrils. The outer border around the rim of the plate is elaborate with alternating blue and red leaf and swag motifs. This plate most likely was for the export market.
decorated with gold. The shell form has outlines of blue. Both were made using molds, thus creating the raised ridges and panels that give them more depth and beauty. The larger plate has a spectator watching a typical scene from a play known to the citizens of that day. Look closely and you will see a red moon and gold clouds, scholarly objects and a weeping willow, pine tree and stylized rocks. Now look at the enlarged border (Image C). It is decorated with the eight Precious Things: the jewel, the cash coin, the lozenge, a pair of books, the music-stone, the painting,

various greens as well as the other typical famille verte colors. The vase has applied dragons painted in blue and highlighted with gold. The next vase (Image F), also famille verte, has a graceful shape further enhanced by the application of applied ribbons, leaves, berries, mice and impressive dragons as well as a central painting of vase and flowers, butterflies, dragonflies and ribbons. No detail was spared on this piece! (It too has applied dragon handles.) The next plate (Image G, next page)has a typical inner scene of ladies in a garden

but an unusual treatment of the rim. The the rhinoceros horn and the Artemisia leaf. These objects held special meaning to the Chinese. The famille verte or “green family” palette began to be used during the reign of Kangxi. This palette usually has underglaze blue with several shades of green, yellow, red, aubergine, brown and black with highlights of gold. The lozenge-shaped dish (Image D) is an example of famille verte. The design is finely executed and the colors are translucent and beautifully applied. The tall six-sided vase (Image E) also is an example of famille verte. Each side is decorated as an individual panel with Chinese characters and landscapes and is outlined with borders of green and red crosshatching. The accompanying plate is decorated with the same landscape as the landscape on the vase. In both we see the
rim is decorated with three distinct borders; the innermost has a yellow background with green crosshatching and with swastikas between. The swastika is a pun for “ten thousand” and usually is paired with another symbol to mean many blessings or many years. The middle border is one of swags and droplets and the final one is a scrolling Greek key. It’s an unusual plate with interesting symbolism.

The last example of famille verte is that of a vase that is a transitional piece combining famille verte and famille rose (Image H). It is decorated primarily in the green palette but has the new rose color. Famille rose was introduced around 1728 and became very popular, replacing famille verte as the palette of choice. This vase is decorated with two golden scaly dragons fighting for a flaming pearl, a frequent motif to find in Chinese porcelain. Although the Chinese had been using polychrome palette since the 15th century, known as three color (woucai) and five color (doucai) decoration, polychrome did not come in demand until Kangxi revived the porcelain industry. He was so intensely involved that he had kilns built at the palace where he could keep up with the progress. We are fortunate that two Jesuit missionaries worked in the Peking Palace workshop during this time. These men, who were trained in the European art tradition, wrote home about their experience. They also taught the Chinese the European technique of perspective. Kangxi introduced the color white (oxide of lead and arsenic), which allowed for tinting and shading and the toning down of brilliant colors.
The pinkish rose found on some Kangxi famille verte pieces are actually “rouge de fer” (iron red) diluted with white. With the introduction of the new colors a need arose for a method of classification. It was not until the nineteenth century that a French collector, Albert Jacquemart (18081875), coined the terms “Famille Verte, Famille Rose, Famille Noire and Famille Juane” as a means of classification.

At about the same time that famille verte was popular, another color decoration came into use: “soufflé” blue. Showing yet another technique developed under the reign of Kangxi (Image I, previous page) are this beautiful punch bowl with the delicately drawn flowers and tendrils on the outside and the modified gold “fleur de leys” or spear border around the inner rim of the bowl and the ginger jar shaped lamp beside it with the same “soufflé” blue interspersed with white reserves decorated with scenes in the famille verte palette. To create the “soufflé” blue the cobalt was ground into a very fine powder and then blown through a bamboo straw onto the clay pot. In the case of the ginger jar, the areas to be decorated would have been covered with paper and removed after the blue had been applied. Kangxi appointed his fourth son, Yongzheng, as his successor, and although Yongzheng only reigned 12 years (1723-1735) he had an important impact on porcelain production.

Changes were made to the body itself, yielding a more lustrous pure white body that gave more translucency to the colors. Blue was a seldomused underglaze but was applied over the glaze with other colors. Black became more stabilized through a composition of lead-alkali-silicates. The stabilization of black and brown was extremely important in the development of the sepia enamels as illustrated on the teapot with the cross handles and berry finial (Image J). The next (Image K) is a grouping of drinking vessels. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate were popular drinks of the time. Coffee and hot chocolate were usually served in cups with
straight sides with handles while tea was served in handle-less tea bowls and saucers. The coffee can to the right with the sepia and rope border with feathers and dots border below and the tea bowl with the sepia landscape on the outside with sepia bands on the interior are excellent examples of sepia decoration. The new black allowed the painter to paint on porcelain as if painting on silk using fine brush strokes to create great detail. This type of painting called “grisaille,” typically done only in black, can also be found in black with iron red or black with blue or black with gold. This example (Image L) has a beautifully executed center motif with vase and flowers, an open box and a flower, located at the bottom called the “Buddha’s hand citron” which symbolizes the wish “May you have blessings and longevity.” Look closely at how delicately the flowers and ribbons are drawn and how shading is used to create �� subtle changes in color.

Another type of brown that was revived from Ming days was a lustrous brown called “café-au-lait” or “Batavian” ware. It was generally used on the outside of cups or undersides of saucers or bowls. Here you can see a pair of saucers, the front decorated in famille rose and the back decorated with the “café-au-lait” (Image M).

Qianlong, Yongzheng’s 24-year-old son, became ruler in 1735 and held the throne until 1795. It is said that in these years the Manchu empire reached its zenith in every aspect of the arts. It was a peaceful and prosperous time; natural genius and originality were more important than formal likeness in painting. Some scholars believe that the most technically outstanding porcelains in the history of Chinese

All the innovations of Kangxi and Yongzheng came to fruition under Qianlong. Famille rose reigned supreme. Paintings, wooden forms and silver forms were sent from England and Europe to be copied in porcelain. Compare the porcelain cream pitcher with the silver only that it is a copy but also how it got the name of “helmet” pitcher. Envision it upside down and you will see a helmet shape of that time. Entire sets of china were ordered for the table and every article that could be made in porcelain was ordered to be made, even though the Chinese had no idea of the
use of the article. Hundreds of thousands of pieces were ordered each year. It was during this time that it became fashionable to have one’s coat-of-arms painted onto a set of china. The style varied throughout the century beginning with a small insignia either in the center or in a reserve on the rim of the plate and gradually becoming larger until the coatof-arms filled nearly the entirety of the plate. This example (Image O) is one of the later designs of armorial china. After the Revolutionary War, America established direct trade with China. Since armorials were not used in the United States, Americans ordered china with their family monogram. These monogrammed pieces are helpful in dating other porcelains with similar decorations since the special order china was dated and recorded on a ship’s manifest.

Closely related to the famille rose palette is the “Mandarin palette” with its bold colors blue, green, aubergine, iron red and purple of Cassius. Many of these pieces are also decorated with officials (Mandarins) and other Chinese in elaborate landscape or interior scenes alternating with densely diapered areas. As you can see

on this bowl (Image P), the colors are quite distinctive and the decoration fills the entire surface of the bowl. Even the inner rim has an intricate cell diaper border.
We end with a plate (Image R) in the famille rose palette with a simple center with the bird and rock motif, but there is a new border—the first hint of Rose Medallion. Our next article will focus on 19th century Chinese porcelain with Rose Medallion as its most popular product. •

The beauty of the famille rose palette can be appreciated in these plates (Image Q) just as their decorative motif reflects the changes in taste of the time. Neoclassicism comes into vogue toward the end of Qianlong’s reign and is evident in the swags and borders on these plates. The first plate has a beautifully decorated center with a single color, purple, and an ornately decorated gold rim. As always, the overall design is perfectly balanced and the colors are harmonious. The second plate shows restrained beauty; the pure white body and the balanced design make these objects timeless in their artistic appeal. The center is decorated with a wreath of flowers, the rim with a swag decoration and the edge a simple but beautiful cell border. The third plate demonstrates the unique ability of the painter to delicately draw and shade the petals of flowers. The inner decoration of flowers, rocks and bamboo with a border of simple gold swirls is perfectly balanced by the three large and three small flower sprays along the outer rim of the plate. fall/winter 2010 | 57

Anyone with three little boys under the age of four could be forgiven for throwing in the towel and letting Fisher Price™ dictate the aesthetic in their home, but Chuck and Ann Marie Watson aren’t going out like that. Their decidedly modern tastes were challenged with the arrival of their first son Ian, but they rose above—literally—and managed to strike the perfect balance between adult and kid-friendly with the design of their Paris Mountain home. The Watsons were living in downtown Columbia, in a home they describe as “very vertical,” when Ian was born, and quickly realized their urban digs were not in sync 66 | at home

with the free-range lifestyle they envisioned for their growing family. “I grew up on a farm with woods and cows and horses and that’s just, to me, the ideal place to grow up,” explains Ann Marie. “Our children needed room to explore.” The restaurant business keeps Chuck on the road between Columbia, Greenville and Spartanburg, so it didn’t much matter where he called home. And because Ann Marie’s training as a nurse anesthetist made her employable just about anywhere, the couple decided that more than just a change of address was in order. fall/winter 2010 | 67

“We decided, if we’re going to move, let’s really move,” Chuck remembers. “We decided to go to the other end of the spectrum and have a little bit of property, and also just so the kids could have some woods to play in.” The Watson boys – Ian’s brothers Max and Jake will soon celebrate their second birthday – will have plenty of woods to play in when the time comes. The home is nestled on a leafy three acres on Paris Mountain, with just enough slope to keep things interesting for three adventuresome little boys. When it came to creating a home worthy of these majestic surroundings, Chuck and Ann Marie turned to Charleston architect Beau Clowney, who also designed their Columbia home, to execute their vision. “Our idea was kind of ‘modern mountain,’” Chuck says. “A lot of it was really based on what you’d see in some of the southwestern designs. We pulled out hundreds and hundreds of photos and things to give to our architect and he came back with some stuff you’d see maybe in the Dallas or Austin area.”

Chuck and Ann Marie know what they like, and chose all the fixtures and finishes themselves, from the sleek rectangular tile in the bathrooms and extra thick kitchen countertops to the earthy shade they picked for the cedar shakes on the exterior of the home. While Ann Marie knows her way around a canvas—her talents have saved the couple a pretty penny on kid décor—and has her own eye for design, she gives much of the creative credit to her husband. “He’s the visionary behind all this,” she says. “I was pregnant and taking care of Ian and he really conceptualized a lot of this. I was just kind of along for the ride growing babies.” The Watsons are all about going with the flow to keep things kid-friendly. For instance, when all three kids were in diapers, the wet bar and handsome floor-to-ceiling wine rack in the living area became a changing station; the wine cubbies proved to be perfect for sorting different sized diapers.

“When we designed it we really did not envision that being the childcare area but it’s a symbiotic thing—diapers and wine,” Ann Marie says. The home’s kitchen makes it clear this is a family whose bread and butter is—well, bread and butter. “We both cook, but Chuck is ‘the’ cook,” Ann Marie explains, adding that her husband pulls together dinner most nights while she wrangles three rowdy boys into bathtubs and PJs. The dining end of the room is long and narrow,

perfect for a farmhouse table full of family, and the windows wrap around and come to a point in a way that lends the sensation of floating amid the trees. The kitchen is the nerve center of most homes, but one can almost feel the hustle that will soon bustle through this welcoming space as homework and soccer and baseball befall the Watson clan. Chuck’s experience with commercial kitchen design is evident in the extra-wide refrigerator and stainless steel surround he chose for the island cook top.
Chuck drew on his experience in the restaurant business to create the ideal home kitchen, and when he’s not running that business from his home office this is where he does some of his best work. The stone wall in this room is one of his favorite design elements.

“You can just wipe it down, you don’t have to worry about scratches or anything—it’s scratched to pieces but I just think it looks better the more scratched it gets,” Chuck explains, pointing out the wood inset that makes the dining portion of the island more comfortable for the three amigos that will soon perch there. And right in the middle of this magazineworthy kitchen sits a gigantic jar filled with tadpoles, rescued from the pool cover in hopes the boys will soon witness the miracle of metamorphosis over breakfast. Because in their quest for cool, Chuck and Ann Marie haven’t lost sight of the importance of frogs in a young boy’s life. •
Rather than shopping from pricey catalogs for kid décor, Ann Marie uses them for inspiration and picks up her own paintbrush.

The fall season lends itself wonderfully to utilizing nature’s bounty not only on our dinner plates, but decorating our tables as well. No one knows this better than Frank Ogletree of The Embassy Flowers & Nature’s Gifts. Using produce from his own garden, flowers from his shop and a few interesting stems plucked from the side of the road, Frank, as talented at gardening as he is at floral design, has created a perfect blend of elements in the beautiful display pictured on the previous pages. Gain inspiration from Frank and then create your own fall masterpiece.

Frank started with a blue splatter bucket that adds a rustic element with its rusted, aged appearance.
He then began layering the display with the tallest elements, adding in the flowers and pinecones, and finishing with the vegetables.
Some of the vegetables were wired and/or taped with floral tape to floral picks in order to provide extra length and flexibility.

What young couple wouldn’t want to have their wedding take place in a fabulous garden setting? Alexa Janulis and Preston Marion certainly got that chance thanks to his aunt, Mary Johnston. Mary and her husband Ellis generously offered to host the wedding and reception at their gorgeous home and gardens located in the residential heart of Greenville. Built in 1939 for Ellison and Jean McKissick and designed by Atlanta architect Phillip Trammell Shutze (who also designed the president’s home at Furman University), the home sits on 14 beautifully landscaped acres. Thank you Alexa, Preston, Mary and Ellis for sharing your charming “at home” wedding with us.

The wedding party’s flowers were from the creative team of Dahlia: a florist.
Before heading out of the country for six weeks to study last August, Alexa planted a 12-row flower garden at Preston’s farm. When she returned she couldn’t wait to go to the farm, see the flowers and pick a bouquet. When they returned to town, Preston, with flowers in one hand and a ring in the other, got down on one knee and proposed. That day was exceptional!

Shortly after they began dating Preston gifted Alexa on her 16th birthday with Dixie, their 8-year-old Dudley Labrador Retriever. Since she has been a part of their lives almost from the beginning of their relationship, it seemed fitting that she also be a part of their wedding. She obviously agrees!

The unusual-looking guest at the table in the left foreground represents a groomsman who is serving in the U.S. Navy and at the last minute couldn’t return for the festivities. Since his suit was already rented and Gregory’s on Congaree generously loaned a “body form,” Preston’s family made the mannequin with the suit so that his friend could be there “in spirit.” Alexa said, “He turned out to be a hit on the dance floor with our guests!”

Preston and Alexa honeymooned on a family-owned boat. Leaving from Beaufort, SC, they cruised to St. Augustine, Fla., staying in B&Bs and inns at various stops along the way. They love to travel (they hope to see the “entire world” someday) and spend time out of doors walking Dixie, camping, gardening and fishing. When indoors they love to cook together. Alexa says, “I follow the recipes … he doesn’t.” Have a wonderfully happy, fulfilled life together Alexa and Preston!

Meet the Iron Chef of tailgating: Mark Pollard. For more than 25 years, Mark was a personal trainer, including eight years as strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater, Clemson University. He holds an 8th degree black belt. He has worked for Yoder’s Building Supply, was the corporate chef and head of outside sales at The Cook’s Station, and is currently the store manager and corporate chef for Dependable Kitchen and Bath in Greenville (where he is preparing to offer cooking classes very soon). Mark has three loves (in addition to the most valuable part of his life … his family!) and those are Clemson, Elvis and cooking. One of Mark’s very favorite times of the year to test his cooking skills is the tailgating season. Many a competition has taken place in the Clemson parking lot between Mark and his friends. My guess is he usually wins. He has graciously shared some of his tasty treats with us. Prepare to tickle your taste buds.
Mark’s Cool Dry Rub Ribs Racks of BaBy Back RiBs Lots of DRy RuB (Recipe to foLLow) a smaLL spRay BottLe fiLLeD with 1/2 appLe juice & 1/2 BRanDy oR BouRBon Remove the membrane from the back of the bones and liberally put the rub all over. Let sit, wrapped in foil, in the refrigerator overnight. Light your grill, using lump charcoal and chunks of hickory wood, and BE SURE to use indirect heat. Get the temperature of your grill to around 200-220 degrees, no more! Grill for approximately 1 hour, then spray and turn. Grill for another hour, then spray, wrap in foil and return to the grill. After about an hour, remove from foil, spray and return to the grill. Grill at about 200 degrees for another hour, until the rack bends and cracks easily when picked up with tongs. Brush with homemade BBQ sauce and sprinkle some dry rub over that. Remove from the grill and let rest for about 15 minutes. Cut and serve. Delicious!

Chef Mark’s Throwdown BBq Sauce
1/2 cup paprika
1 1/4 cup ketchup
4 tbsp. honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup bourbon
3 tbsp. molasses
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
4 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
4 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/4 cup onion powder 1/3 cup granulated garlic 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 tsp. dried mustard
1 tbsp. applesauce
1 tsp. granulated garlic
1 1/2 tsp. cumin
3/4 cup tomato paste
1 1/2 tsp. soy sauce
1/4 tsp. white pepper
3 tbsp. kosher salt
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. liquid smoke
a little bit of celery seed
2 tsp. onion powder
1 tbsp. dried basil
3/4 tsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. ground cumin
2 tbsp. lemon pepper 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 1/2 tbsp. basil
Mix all ingredients together and spread over ribs, pork butts, etc.
2/3 cup corn syrup 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and mix well (use a stick blender for this, if you like). Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer over medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Be sure to stir well so it doesn’t scorch or stick. This sauce is smack-your-mama yummy!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roast nuts on a baking sheet until golden, about 12-15 minutes. Line another sheet with parchment paper or foil and set aside. In a large skillet, heat butter, brown sugar and hot sauce over medium heat. Add nuts; stir until butter mixture is golden brown, 3-5 minutes. Spread nuts on prepared baking sheet; season with kosher salt. Cool to room temperature, tossing occasionally. These nuts will stay fresh in a container for up to 1 week.

Saturday Sangria 2 bottles chilled dry red wine 1 cup brandy 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed if possible) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 oranges cut into thin rounds (navels work well)
2 lemons cut into thin rounds 3 limes cut into thin rounds 2 apples cored and cut into 1/2 inch chunks 2 cinnamon sticks 2 cups cold club soda
In a large pot or bowl, combine the wine, brandy, orange juice, sugar and cinnamon sticks; stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the orange, lemon and lime slices and the apple chunks, then refrigerate for three to four hours, or overnight if you can. Remove from the refrigerator and add the soda. Serve in festive glasses over ice. Enjoy!

Crazy Triple-Chocolate Brownies 1 cup butter, melted 2 cups sugar 4 large eggs 1/2 cup coffee liqueur 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 tsp. freshly ground cinnamon 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 3 oz semisweet chocolate morsels 1 1/2 oz semisweet chocolate chunks 2 oz milk chocolate morsels 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 9”x13” baking pan with spray vegetable oil. In a mixing bowl, add the sugar and butter and blend. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition. Add the liqueur and vanilla, along with the cinnamon, and whisk well. Add the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt and stir to blend. Fold in the chocolates, and then spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake until the brownies spring back when touched, and when a toothpick comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 30 minutes. Don’t be afraid to eat ‘em ALL!

In December of 2007, Kim and Wes Turnage moved into their “new� home that was built in 1928. So it seems fitting that we are visiting them three years later while their lovely Spartanburg home is in a festive mood for the holiday season. Wes is a dentist in Gaffney and Kim is the financial coordinator for his practice. When they bought their home, the couple knew they needed to update some areas.

Upon entering the home, visitors are immediately greeted by a spectacular display of bright red bows, frosted pinecones and evergreen roping, multi-colored glass balls of varying sizes, berries, twigs and a festive ribbon interwoven throughout the length of the banister. opposite, bottom:
Complementing the neutral tones of the home, a bright plaid bow is the key element to this holiday wreath.
The wide brick staircase is even more welcoming with the addition of fresh evergreen roping, red ribbon bows highlighted with multi-colored gleaming balls, and a mass of tiny white lights.
Kim says they “did a lot of painting inside and out and refinished all of the hardwood floors.� They added all new landscaping and a new heating system. That left them mainly with interior decorating. Kim was so pleased with the interior design help she received from Kerry Di Pasquale that she asked her to help when it came time to decorate for the holidays. Let’s take a look and see what they accomplished.

My Favorite Objet d’Art Our hOMe is
not the designer show house with the perfectly placed appointments that one might expect. My husband and I raise our two boys in a home that is stylishly comfortable and is quite often scattered with dog toys and soccer balls. I don’t generally buy an item to fit a specific space; instead, our home is filled with an assortment of eclectic items for which I have found the perfect place. Some of these pieces are gifts from very special clients, heirlooms from our family and treasures that the boys have made. Those who know me know I am very true to my own personal style; I continue to love the same pieces and I don’t change my decor with the trends. As a matter of fact, I still own most every piece that I have collected, much to my husband’s dismay. Through the years I have tried to teach our boys to have an appreciation of art and personal artistic expression. You will find many of their artistic creations proudly displayed throughout our home, from sculptures on the cocktail table to the cherished framed masterpieces that adorn the walls. Because I have so many things that are sentimental to me, I at first thought it might be difficult to choose my favorite objet d’art. As I did an inventory in my mind trying to weigh each piece’s emotional significance, I realized that by far the most special is the artwork that graces our walls. It was much easier than I thought to actually choose my favorite painting. My husband’s brother was a very talented artist who gave us many beautiful creations. There is one painting in particular that captivated our children’s attention at an early age that they affectionately named “the funny little dancing man.” Although my brother-in-law did many paintings especially for each one of us in the family, this one was from his own personal collection. It is a watercolor that was completed in 1994. Part of “the dancing man’s” appeal is his mysterious stare that inevitably makes you curious of his thoughts. The colors are warm and rich and evoke strong emotions. There is not a day that I walk by and gaze at him where I am not drawn to smile. •

Small changes can make huge difference EvEryonE wants a clean home, but could the scouring and scrubbing be doing more harm than good? If you’re using petroleum-based cleaners—and many people are—then you could be bringing products into your home that have not been tested for exposure to human health. According to Planet Green, a website that promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle, 17,000 petrochemicals are currently sold for home use and only a third of those have been tested for safety. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that indoor pollution levels are often 100 times higher than the levels outside, and cleaners are a primary reason.
The average home has 63 synthetic chemicals inside, totaling 10 gallons. Healthy Child Healthy World, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting children from harmful chemicals, says scientific evidence is increasingly pointing to chemical contaminants as contributors to diseases including cancer, autism, birth defects and more. While the effects of these products haven’t been fully discovered, many people choose to avoid them in an effort to ward off allergies, asthma and other health problems. Others simply prefer a home without artificial scents and chemicals. Market research firm Mintel found that sales of green cleaning supplies quadrupled between 2003 and 2008, reaching $64.5 million in sales, and could reach $623 million (30% of the market) by 2013. Local experts say there are plenty of options for those looking to make a change, and it’s easier—and less expensive—than people might think. Tina Valentin is owner of Green to Clean, a Greenville business that offers commercial and residential green cleaning as well as consulting. “I’ve taken courses and educated myself so that people can come to me about going green, and I can set them up to achieve that goal,” she says. The first step for people looking to reduce the chemicals in their home is taking a closer look at the cleaners they are currently using. “See if you can read any of the ingredients on the

Elizabeth Lapidus, community relations coordinator for Earth Fare, an organic supermarket in Greenville, has seen the problem, dubbed “greenwashing,” in which companies try to make their products appear more natural in an effort to boost sales. “Cleaning products are not like food—they don’t have to list all of their ingredients,” she says. “I’d say to look for products with the ingredients on the label.” For example, Seventh Generation products include an ingredients list while Clorox products typically don’t. When looking at labels, Valentin suggests steering clear of bleach, petroleum, petrochemicals, formaldehyde and parabens. Instead, look for natural ingredients including baking soda, citrus and vinegar. She recommends the Method and Ecos brands. For those on a budget, she also likes Citra-Solv, which is a highly concentrated orangebased cleaner that is mixed with water and lasts for months. “It has huge disinfecting properties,” she says.

Another great option is simply mixing up your own cleaners, which Valentin says is quick and easy to do (see sidebar). She even hosts green cleaning parties where guests drink cocktails and learn to make items such as window cleaner and oven scrub. “And it’s all with stuff most people have under their sink or in the baking cabinet,” she says. Lapidus suggests the Earth Fare brand as well as Seventh Generation and Biokleen. She also lauds Charlie’s Soap, a vegetable-
based product that can be used anywhere and on anything, from “false teeth to diesel engines,” according to the label. Keri Moore, marketing team leader at Whole Foods in Greenville, says she has noticed more customers becoming concerned about cleaning products, seeking formulas that are safe for people, pets and the environment but still do the job. Whole Foods has numerous offerings that do just that, she says, even offering an annual Toxic Trade-In Day, when customers can bring in any conventional cleaning product and exchange it for a similar product from the company’s private brand, 365 Everyday Value.
“Customers are able to try our high-quality products at a great value and see how well our greener cleaners work,” she says. A trade-in day was held in July, and Moore suggests checking the Whole Foods website for the next opportunity. Those new to green cleaning can start by replacing one product with a greener option. Lapidus suggests starting with the
