enth year anniversary!!! Who would have thought that amount of time could pass so quickly?
There has been much pleasure for me in having the opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief of At Home. I couldn’t have asked for a better publisher (who usually lets me have it my way); a more superior staff with which to work; for more stunningly creative homes to feature; for more accommodating homeowners; for more inspiring individuals and businesses to highlight in our department features or for more loyal advertisers who have been the life’s blood of this magazine. Ten years calls for something special and we think that’s what we’ve accomplished within these pages. What fun it has been to go back through each of the past issues, reminisce and select some of our favorites. Categories were created to help define the search and it was hard at times not to keep adding more. Those that have been included should provide a comprehensive overview of the contents of the past. We have been honored to receive numerous awards for our work. The cover that I’ve selected as my favorite (opposite page) represents one of the issues that received first place not only for the entire magazine but the cover as well. The “home” of the bees was spotted almost as an afterthought while shooting photos elsewhere on a farm in Iva. Once I saw the photo I knew it had to be a cover. Sometimes the best things fall into place without much planning. That cover wouldn’t have happened without a talented photographer (in this case Patrick Cox). We’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best, as well as some excellent writers. We honor them and thank them on page 206. We hope that you too enjoy reliving 10 delightful years as you journey through this issue. Onward to the next ten!!!

Although this is not the oldest home we’ve featured, it is the one that has maintained more of the elements of the original structure and property. Built in 1830 for Alexander McBee, the property known as Brushy Creek still consists of over 20 idyllic acres in the heart of downtown Greenville. Its current owner worked tirelessly for a number of years to have it placed on The National Register of Historic Places.
– Inside the front door, the home reveals its “shotgun” style of main hallway with rooms to the right and left. A mural depicting a much earlier scene, painted by the current owner’s paternal aunt, adorns the left side of the entry hall. – A listing on The Registry of Historic Places was recently approved for the property known as Brushy Creek. – No longer in use, an old smokehouse remains a part of this historic property. – An abundance of wildflowers and swaying grasses in a field where once horses and cattle grazed leads the way to the home.
