The hands have gotten dirty with spring planting, the plants are now wellestablished and flourishing, so it’s time to kick back and enjoy the fruits of spring’s labor. Bring on the iced tea! What I think YOU will enjoy are the features we have to offer in this summer issue. We have three very diverse homes to show you. The Boyle home is set on land steeped in history and is home to numerous animals, large and small. DRIVE ONTO THE LUSH 50-ACRE CAMPOBELLO FARM OF JOHN AND CINDY BOYLE AND YOU FEEL NOTHING BUT SERENITY – grazing horses, a meandering creek, rolling green meadows. But take one step into the home they designed on the back of a napkin, and it’s clear that serenity is not high on the couple’s priority list. “It’s an entertaining house,” says Cindy, with a constant stream of family, friends and dogs coming and going. Immediately upon receiving guests, she’s making organic, local coffee, checking stock quotes, cuddling dogs, discussing the acquisition of an additional dog—to make five—and checking the water filter for the pool (which is used mainly by the dogs). “They hop in and do laps every day,” she says with a laugh. “This is a comfortable, livable place,” she says. “You can put your feet on the furniture. That’s what we wanted.” Having collaborated with her architect brother on previous homes— they’ve lived in the area for 30 years—the Boyles had gained enough knowledge to sketch in the features they viewed as most important. A top priority was creating a 5,000-square-foot, three-story home that blends with the scenic surroundings. “We wanted the land to be the focal point, not the house,” Cindy says. To achieve this, the structure was built four feet into the ground, achieving a more discreet profile. On the exterior, the combination of Virginia and Tennessee fieldstone was carefully selected to create the most natural color palette of reds, grays and browns. English Ivy clambers up the façade.

Though other locations on the property yielded better views, the Boyles decided to build in the only place where there were no beech trees, as they are difficult to grow in the South but are naturally occurring here. A conservation easement ensures all 50 acres are permanently protected. “We had come through this property before, since they used to hold fox hunts here,” says John. Cindy is an avid fox hunter, which involves chasing foxes and coyotes over fences. “We just loved this piece of property. We were able to put three pieces together to form 50-odd acres.”

The land is located in Golden Hills of Fairview, part of the former Fairview Farms which, at one time, encompassed more than 3,000 acres along the North Carolina border outside Landrum. Golden Hills was created as a residential equestrian community in the early 1990s and includes 575 acres of rolling countryside and miles of trails shared by all residents. We can ride for miles and never see anyone, Cindy says. Another treasure the Boyles enjoy protecting is a large beech tree showcasing the property’s history as an Iroquois encampment. “Someone from Indian affairs came out and saw a number of interesting hieroglyphics on the trees,” she says. The visitor, also a shaman, translated the symbols, which are topographical clues similar to a map. A picture of a mountain with a circle below it signifies the discovery of gold in the area. The tree sits near the six-stall barn, also designed by the Boyles and home to the family’s five horses.

In addition to their day jobs—both John and Cindy are vice presidents at Raymond James & Associates—Cindy fox hunts from September through March. John participates in jumping competition and is a licensed steward with the United States Equestrian Federation, ensuring that competition rules are being followed. He is also president of FENCE, the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, an education and recreation center in Tryon. Daughter Mary, a recent Wofford grad who is currently working on a master’s at Converse, enjoys show jumping. Older sister Cole graduated from Washington & Lee and moved to New York to become vice president of sales and marketing for Relix Magazine. The family’s love of four-legged friends is evident throughout the home, with animal-themed art and riding-related items scattered throughout. Cindy did the interiors herself.

This exterior space, designed by Stephanie Schulte, is the ideal perch for a cherub that once sat atop an arts school. Cindy bought two as a set, giving her brother the art-themed cherub and keeping the musical one.
“We like art, we like old things, and we didn’t want everything to look matchymatchy,” she says of her goals for the space. Many pieces were picked up on family trips and almost all of them tell a story. In the living room, a Philip Dusenbury sculpture holds court in one corner. “It’s of a woman, Jared Schmidt, who lent a horse to the 1964 Olympic team,” Cindy says. “She was an accomplished equestrienne and a dear friend. A friend decided to sell it, so we strapped it to the back of a station wagon on the way home from a race meet.” A horse sculpture showcased in the bay window is from the Han dynasty and was picked up on a trip to China. Cindy fell in love with it and carried the heavy piece in a plastic bag for 22 hours to make sure it arrived home safely. John Boyle’s great grandfather was a doctor
in New York, and once removed a gall bladder in exchange for a painting by Charles Warren Eaton, a leading tonalist at the time. It now hangs in the living room. In the dining room, painted, appropriately enough, “Foxblood Red,” Sheffield candlesticks flank a humorous piece by local artist Sarah Holmberg called “Left Behind.” “When you go over a jump, you want to be with the horse, but you can tell this person is being left behind the jump,” Cindy says. Beams were salvaged from an old house on the original Fairview Farms property. The open dining and living areas are often used to accommodate impromptu dinner parties for up to 40. (Tuesday gatherings to watch American Idol are a tradition.) French doors open to the kidney-shaped pool outside, and people often gather here or on the screened porch.

The main level master suite includes another spacious bay window and a simple American bed made of old recycled wood. It also includes some of the rocking horses she picks up in antiques shops during travels. The second level features three comfortable yet simply furnished guest bedrooms, and the third level is a Pilates studio, which the Boyles use twice a week. Like the home, the barn bustles with activity, as horses head out to the riding ring or high paddock, dogs leap in and out of the nearby creek, and the lone cat impassively observes it all. Historians believe an old granary and schoolhouse once sat near the site of the barn, and a nearby stacked stone wall was left intact as another reminder of the land’s rich history. Though its purpose has changed over the centuries—Indian encampment, sharecropper community, horse farm—the Boyles want to make sure this stretch of South Carolina scenery never will.

Carlton Owen was happily ensconced in Simpsonville in the late 1990 s when he and his wife realized their nest would soon be empty. Around the same time, Owen was engaged in discussions with his fellow Upstate Forever board members about ways they as individuals could walk the talk and model the conservation organization’s philosophy in their own lives. This perfect storm swept the Owens into downtown Greenville and out of the suburban landscaping mold. “We said we would step forward and build, at our expense, a home that would showcase examples of sustainable living in both the house and the land,” Owen explains. The couple purchased two lots on Pettigru Street – one that had been cleared by a house fire, and its neighbor, that happened to be the last remaining undeveloped lot in the Pettigru Historic District. They built their eco-minded home on the first lot, and set about dedicating the adjacent lot to native plants. “We wanted to create an Upstate woodland garden, using plants that would be consistent with a little forested zone in this area,” Owen says.
The practice of using primarily native plants in a landscape with an eye toward reducing water consumption is known as xeriscaping, literally “dry landscaping”. Whether your priority is cutting costs or saving the Earth, water conservation is a cause we can all get behind, and xeriscaping, also referred to as “smart gardening,” is a winner on both fronts. Sprawling expanses of lawn punctuated by sweeping beds filled with annual color are verboten, but gardeners choosing this way of life aren’t forced to cultivate an affinity for cactus
and rocks, either. In the middle of these two extremes are a surprising number of native trees, shrubs, flowering plants and grasses that have spent generations adapting to and thriving in our climate. “We will have more droughts in this area,” Owen says. “And the likelihood of a native plant surviving a drought versus an ornamental is much greater.” A wildlife biologist by trade, Owen runs the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. This background gave him a leg up when it came to planning his landscape, but he also consulted with Rick Huffman, native plant specialist and principal and founder of Earth Design Inc. Huffman’s company routinely works with homeowners looking to go native as well as on commercial and public properties. Roughly 20 percent of his business is focused on restoration ecology, such as creating wetlands and restoring streams. For those looking to do it themselves, Clemson University has positioned itself as a resource for the community on the principles of xeriscaping. They have even devoted a portion of the South Carolina Botanical Garden to the Van Blaricom Xeriscape Garden, also known as the Smart Garden. The area provides visitors a living example

of drought-resistant gardening, with a small plot of grass surrounded by lowwater plants grouped according to their irrigation needs. “We wanted to show homeowners how to use these ecologically sound, time-saving, cost-saving gardening
techniques,” says Todd Steadman, Associate Director of the SC Botanical Garden. The university has also made available a wealth of online information through its Home and Garden Information Center. It is here (www.clemson.edu/extension/
hgic) that residential gardeners can find information on the basic principles of and appropriate plant species for xeriscaping.
Plan it out Huffman says the key to achieving an environmentally efficient

landscape is taking stock of what sort of natural irrigation your personal plot provides, and grouping plants according to their water needs. This means not planting annuals that need constant attention in the midst of more hardy, drought-resistant plants.
Steadman points out the ecological impact, stating that 40 to 50 percent of municipal water use goes toward irrigation, and 70 percent of that is for lawns. There is also the energy and resources necessary to filter, deliver and purify all of that water.
“It doesn’t mean you can’t have waterloving plants,” he says. “But you want to put them in areas that are going to be wet.”
You can still have the traditional Southern curb appeal of a lush lawn, but it doesn’t need to – and shouldn’t – be the lead player in your landscape.
Think about those areas of your yard that always seem to be a little soggy or where the gutters overflow during a heavy rain, and use those spots for those petunias you can’t live without.
Take a pass on the grass The Owens’ Pettigru yard is shady and hot – not the ideal conditions for growing lush, green grass. So, they didn’t. “We have no yard and no grass. Do the dirty work Once you have your design down, the next step is to build up your soil. “Healthier soil holds on to water longer and releases it as plants need it,” Steadman explains, adding that leaf mold has become the primary source of fertilizer – and red clay buster – used at the SC Botanical Garden. Steadman and his staff have built a mountain of leaves with the bounty they receive from the city of Clemson’s
residential collection, but homeowners can achieve the same effect by raking leaves from their yard into an out of the way pile and leaving them to fester until spring. When you see steam rising off the mound you’ll know good things are happening.
Make good choices Huffman, who was native when native wasn’t cool, is also the founder of the South Carolina Native Plant Society (www.scnps.org), another great resource for the home gardener. The organization’s web site (www.scnps.org) provides information on plants that are becoming increasingly popular for their resistance to dry conditions, ease of maintenance, and the wildlife they attract. Another important element of native gardening is avoiding – or eliminating – invasive non-natives. One of Owen’s biggest challenges has been battling the leafy interlopers vying for prime real estate in his yard – bamboo, wisteria, and, of course, kudzu.
“There is often a native alternative that fits the design,” Huffman says, pointing out that replacing the ever popular Leyland cypress along your property line with Eastern red cedar brings the added benefit of attracting bluebirds.

It is no different in my own home. Most of my art and accessories are from my and my husband Michael’s many adventures all over the world. We usually find an oil painting or two that quickly becomes a must-have. Or it’s discovering a beautiful blue and white ceramic collectable, or maybe a unique sign from a favorite French winery. Once home, I too have to find that special spot for these memorable treasures. Since we also have a home on the ocean in Palm Coast Florida, which we love and have accessorized in much the same way, the choice is often difficult as to which piece belongs in which house. However, our longing to be near the water is what is most reflected in our paintings in both the Cliffs Valley and Palm Coast, and I especially have that one piece that is my favorite objet d’art.

Cabin FEVER GIBSON FINDS ONE MOUNTAIN GETAWAY IS NOT ENOUGH 50 | at home
IF YOU’RE READING THIS ANYWHERE SOUTH OF THE MASON-DIXON LINE, THE IDEA OF A COOL MOUNTAIN GETAWAY PROBABLY SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD RIGHT NOW. LUCKY FOR DEBORAH GIBSON, SHE HAS TWO OF THEM. Gibson had been enjoying ownership of a rustic 100-year-old, 800-square-foot log cabin in Highlands, NC, for about three years when the Greenville interior decorator decided to take on a challenge and build one. She knew she wanted to stay in Highlands, which she describes as “an extension of Greenville, only cooler,” so she began her search for a shell there.
Gibson, an interior decorator, enjoys the rustic feel of her turn-of-the-century mountain getaway.
Gibson chose rhododendron vine for some natural privacy on the upstairs deck. The bench in the foreground was a church pew in a past life.
After about a year of looking on her own she called on cabin expert Tom Chambers, who had helped her refurbish her original mountain home. Chambers has, over the last 20 years, built a successful business seeking out and relocating cabin skeletons for people such as Gibson who like a little history with their hideaways. “I was spoiled by the beauty of the antiquity and primitiveness of it,” Gibson says of her first cabin. “I wanted to try and recreate that but on a larger scale.” It took Chambers another six months to locate an 18x22 structure, which he then moved to Highlands from Alamance, NC. “When I saw the skeleton I thought it would make a really nice great room,” Gibson remembers.
The upstairs deck affords a bird’s eye view of the cabin’s peaceful mountain setting. Gibson used her flair for design to make the interior of her home away from home as beautiful as its natural surroundings. The vintage leather chair is one of her special finds.

When he first started he developed a relationship with a retired mailman with a gift for gab who helped him with many of his early finds. “It won’t be much longer that the business I’m in will be a business,” Chambers says, referring to the dwindling supply of original structures. Chambers may be contributing to his own professional demise, however, as he has twice convinced owners in the market to unload their cabins not to sell—to him or anyone else. “People are starting to realize the historical value of these structures and that they should remain on the original site,” he explains.
Gibson’s goal was the best of both worlds – an authentic historic home with all the modern conveniences. She achieved this in the kitchen by mixing reclaimed barn wood with new appliances.

The bride as well as her mother, the mother of the groom and the bridesmaids all benefited from the expertise of make-up artist Shantel Lowe.
JENNIFER ROOK ALWAYS DREAMED OF having an outdoor wedding. Her two loves, water and the outdoors, have been a large part of her life since her parents owned property on Lake Keowee. With its exquisite views of both the lake and the mountains surrounding it, there was no hesitation in selecting The Great Lawn at The Reserve for her very special day. Jennifer and Chris White met in Washington, D.C., through a mutual friend, Hughes Bates, and started dating in 2005. As Jennifer says, “Sparks flew and the rest is history!� Chris surprised Jennifer with a weekend trip in February 2008 and insisted she not know the destination until they arrived. All she knew was that she needed to pack for warm weather, that she needed to leave work early, and that they would be flying. Despite her asking nearly a hundred questions to try to guess where they were heading, Chris held the secret until they arrived in Key Biscayne, Florida. He then proceeded to surprise her even further by romantically getting down on one knee and popping the question on the balcony of their room. Of course, she accepted and they immediately called family and friends to tell them the news. We thank them for allowing us a peek at their special day and wish them many years of shared joy. 84 | at home

For their first dance as husband and wife, Chris and Jennifer chose “Stand By Me,” which was played by “Anita,” an Atlanta band. The band was hugely popular with all of the wedding guests and did a fabulous job of getting everyone to the dance floor.
Sent on their way in a shower of bubbles, Jennifer and Chris boarded a helicopter (a tradition started by Jennifer’s parents 36 years earlier) to begin their lives together. They honeymooned on the Greek Isles of Mykonos and Santorini and concluded in Athens. 90 | at home

preheat oven to 450ยบ. place the asparagus on a large baking sheet in a single layer. in a small bowl, using a fork, combine the butter, lemon zest and oregano. With your hands, rub the asparagus with the lemon butter until coated. season with salt and pepper. roast until lightly browned but still crisp, about 10 to 15 minutes. take out of oven and squeeze the juice from the lemon over all and serve.

place the chicken breasts between wax paper and pound with a kitchen mallet to 1/4-inch thick. toss together the flour, salt and pepper and place in a large shallow bowl. dredge chicken breasts in flour mixture. heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. add 4 chicken breasts and cook until lightly browned about 3 to 5 minutes per side. repeat process with remaining chicken, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil to pan. place chicken in overlapping rows in a 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

Cook over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. add capers and wine and cook until reduced by half, 3 to 5 minutes. add the lemon juice and cool for 2 minutes. remove pan from heat and swirl in remaining 3/4 cups butter, one tablespoon at a time. drizzle sauce over chicken in baking pan; cover and refrigerate until

You might think you’re a pretty big Clemson fan, until you meet Ray and Linda Cash. After his graduation from the university in 1970, Ray’s job with Union Carbide took the couple as far north as Connecticut, before a move to Kemet brought the Cash family home to Greenville in 1983. “Since that time I believe we’ve been to every football game they’ve played, home and away,” he says, adding this includes a jaunt to Tokyo Ray and Linda Cash fell instantly in love with this “very special” lot on Lake Keowee.

So it seems only fitting that when the Cashes were ready to build their dream house they chose to do it a mere eight miles from his beloved alma mater. While raising their son in the ubersuburban Woodruff Road area, Ray and Linda had a vision they would one day retire away from the hustle and bustle, but never considered Lake Keowee until some friends mentioned they had recently bought property there. “We always thought Keowee was way up in the mountains,” Ray says. “Then we discovered it was only eight miles from Clemson. Being near Clemson and on the lake was just appealing.” 114 | at home

Today, after three years of everyday living, Ray says the only thing he would change in the 11,000-square-foot dwelling is replacing the carpet in the master bedroom with the luxurious limestone flooring that graces the rest of the home. While the heated area of the home encompasses 8,800 square feet (the extensive decking and garage—more on that later—make up the rest), Ray confesses to spending most of his time in the 3,600 square feet of living area on the middle level. In addition to Ray’s study, this level is home to the master bedroom—complete with his and hers baths,
because it’s Linda’s dream home, too, after all—as well as the kitchen, dining and laundry rooms. “There are weeks I don’t even go upstairs, unless Linda’s called me up there because a window’s sticking or a toilet’s running, or I need to find her,” he says. Upstairs is where Linda would rather stay, especially when the couple’s seven-month-old grandson comes to play. This lucky guy has a playroom all his own overlooking the lake, an element that was added to the floor plan well before he was a twinkle in his parents’ eye.

“It’s my dream to sit in that bay window and read to him, if he’ll sit still long enough,” Linda says. In the meantime Linda can content herself with the view from her own private study upstairs, or pop over to the dedicated craft room for some scrapbooking. The lake level is Ray’s domain, where he occasionally takes advantage of the impressive home gym, but he readily admits to being more of a motor head than a gym rat. His garage accommodates seven cars, including the 1971 Triumph Spitfire he bought as a graduation gift to himself. A hydraulic lift, one of the ideas the Cashes picked up at the Orlando home show, allows for stacking the cars body shop style.

Rather than a room dedicated to media, the Cashes opted to automate the downstairs living area so that the touch of a button lowers roomdarkening shades, and controls audio and video for both the television mounted above the fireplace and the movie screen. For extra peace of mind the system controls the security cameras throughout the property.

The garage opens to an outdoor living area with a small, but elaborate, swimming pool. A tiger paw inlaid in the floor of the pool further proves how true Ray is to his school.
Another of Ray’s requested custom touches is the home’s extensive automation, including a mailbox notification system integrated to the sound system inside the home that alerts him when the mail has arrived. summer 2010 | 121
“I’m not a gadget freak, but I like stuff that works,” he says. “I’m big on not wasting time.” The shades throughout the home are programmed to lower themselves when the afternoon sun is at its highest, and rise to afford a view of those breathtaking sunsets over the water. The push of one button puts the house in night mode— arming the security system, adjusting the climate control, and dimly lighting a pathway from the bedroom to the bathroom and kitchen. It’s turned out to be everything Ray dreamed of. “It took a lot of wiring, but to me that’s putting technology to work.”
Phantom screens around the pool are among Ray’s favorite custom touches. They can be raised to enjoy the breeze off the lake, or lowered to keep out uninvited pests. The inlaid tiger paw in the pool makes it clear the Cashes’ blood runneth orange. 122 | at home

Landscaping a home this grand is no small job, so the Cashes turned to local phenom Graham Kimak, who conceived the water feature that meanders down the slope and ends in a small pond near the lake.
