Family spotlight A Trail Tradition

The Trail children: Ellis, Mackey and Holmes. When Grace Trail attends Holiday Open House with her family, it’s much more than shopping. It’s reliving a part of her childhood and helping her children create those same memories. “I grew up in this area, so Augusta Road was a part of my childhood,” she said. “I used to go pick out the presents I wanted at the Elephant’s Trunk, and now my children are picking out theirs. Visiting Musette Stern (owner at Muse Shoe Studio) - I used to work there, and she and my mom are friends. It’s about so much more than business, it’s about stopping in and visiting.”

“I grew up in this area, so Augusta Road was a part of my childhood. … It’s about so much more than business, it’s about stopping in and visiting.”

In addition to visiting some of her favorite shops, Trail and her husband Ryan love to take daughters Holmes, 7, and Mackey, 3, and son Ellis, 6, to ride the horse drawn carriage. “It’s a fun family activity that gets you in the mood for Christmas,” she said. The family laughs when recalling one trip on the Santa Mobile at Holiday Open House that took them a little farther than they expected - all of the way to Home Depot. The lights and decor in the shops and squares, holiday music around every corner and catching up with old and new friends are all highlights for the Trails, and while she doesn’t do too much buying with the whole family in tow, she does gather many good ideas for follow-up purchases.

Trail likes supporting local businesses instead of big box retailers and chains, and says that it not only helps her friends and neighbors who run the businesses, but is more enjoyable as well. “It’s a great three-mile stretch of shopping,” she said. The kids enjoy activities like face painting and crafts but they also make sure to have a special visit with Santa during Holiday Open House. Refreshments and free samples of a variety of treats up and down Augusta Road are always popular with the kids as well.

6

“They see a lot of their friends, and it’s just a good way for all of us to slow down and spend time together,” Trail said. “It really is about community.”

The Samaritan House Greenville, Inc.

A Holiday Open House tradition

Family fun and gift ideas are two important parts of Holiday Open House, but giving back to the community is a major focus as well, with several volunteer efforts coinciding with the event. Members of Augusta Road Business Association kicked off the holiday season on November 5, making deliveries for Meals on Wheels - a longstanding ARBA tradition.

Meals on Wheels - a nonprofit organization that serves meals to homebound individuals. Last year, Meals on Wheels delivered more than 400,000 meals in Greenville County thanks to a volunteer corps of more than 2,000. ARBA members are proud to participate. Ken Gamble of North Hills Automotive said that no matter how busy his company is, he makes sure that his staff is represented, and often sends out his shuttle vehicles and drivers to deliver meals. “It’s something we’re glad to be involved with,” he said. “Even if there is a sacrifice involved, that’s ok - we should be involved.” ARBA also supports the Samaritan From left to right: Clair Ray, Dale Harkness from North Hills Automotive, Lin & Phil Watson from Harrison Lighting, Pat Rawlins of Pat Rawlins Photography, Charlie & Dana McMullen from Blockhouse Restaurant & Oyster Bar, Joel Barnwell from L’s on Augusta, Bryan Garrison from Paisley & Paper.

House throughout the month of December, and participating businesses will have special donation boxes set up during Holiday Open House and throughout the season. All collections go directly to the Samaritan House, a local charity that oversees the collection and distribution of food and clothing to those in need in the Augusta Road area. The Samaritan House of Greenville is a faith-based cooperative made up of five sponsoring churches along with individuals and community groups. The organization provides about $1,200 to $1,300 of food per week. Because of donations, USDA status, and bargain shopping, the Samaritan House can turn $1 donated into over $2 of food, according to Samaritan House board member Bozzie Boggs, so every donation can make a big difference. Tom Hohman at the Bakery off Augusta said his team always participates in the Samaritan House fundraiser. One year, when little was collected in the box, “the staff threw all of our tips in there,” he said. “We’re always involved in that.” Shoppers are encouraged to enjoy the great deals on Nov. 22 and then, if they can, put a few coins or bills in the collection boxes to help make the holidays a bit brighter for a local family in need.

5th Annual Lights on Augusta Sponsored by TALK Magazine

North Hills Automotive can’t sell gifts at Holiday Open House, but there is one way the retail auto service company can participate - through the ever-popular Lights on Augusta event. “We have a big building here,” said owner Ken Gamble. “We can really do a lot with lights. We didn’t win last year, but we’ll see how competitive it gets this year.” Lights on Augusta is a contest for Augusta Road Business Association members that has become a community tradition and a boost to camaraderie among ARBA

members. All the businesses have to do is decorate their business or storefront - and the community decides on a winner via online voting at www.onlyonaugusta.com.

Voting kicks off December 1 and ends December 31, and Holiday Open House is a great time for customers to begin picking favorites. This community tradition is a favorite of area families, regular shoppers and visitors to the Augusta Road area. Though the historic area is beautiful year-round, the shopping district is something special during the holidays, with many business owners pulling out all of the stops for amazing light displays that put everyone in a festive mood. More than 20 businesses will be competing this year,

including past winner Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio, which is returning after a year off due to a move. Owner Wanda Ponthieux is excited to return and have her store decorated for the season. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “Our clientele has grown, and we have more customers, so we really enjoy doing it.” Lauren Flack, director of retail operations at Twill, says her store will be participating for the first time. “We always decorate the store with Christmas ornaments and presents, but this year we’re adding lights so everyone will be able to see it at night,” she said. Lights on Augusta is a big part of what makes the Holiday so special in this area, she said. “I love that everyone gets into decorating and displays, and the whole area looks like a Christmas village,” she said.
