Farrah Redmon was born and raised in Greenville. Her husband Mike is from Ohio, but Farrah says Greenville is his adopted home, and he’s as southern as he can be without being born here. The Redmons are raising their daughters, 10 year-old Francesca and eight year-old India, in the Augusta Road area. Holiday Open House has become a part of their family holiday tradition. For Farrah, the event is all about making memories that will last a lifetime. “For us, it’s about being able to spend good, quality family time together whether it’s going into one shop to get their face painted or to another shop looking for a gift for friends and family,” Farrah said. “We are all doing it together, and that’s what really “For us, it’s about draws me to this event.”
being able to spend good, quality family time together whether it’s going into one shop to get their face painted or to another shop looking for a gift for friends and family.”
The Redmons love being a part of the Augusta Road community, and Holiday Open House is one of the many things that make it special. “You run into your friends and your children’s friends, and you certainly get into the holiday spirit,” said Farrah. “It’s an opportunity for us to spend time together as a family and to pop into local businesses, many of which are owned by our friends, and support them and get excited about the holidays.”
The Redmon girls are excited about visiting Elephant’s Trunk and Santa at this year ’s Holiday Open House, but the whole family is focused on what’s most important. The Redmons plan to support Holiday Open House’s charity efforts as well. “I think it’s a great opportunity for our children to realize that Christmas is not just about receiving a gift,” Farrah said. “It’s also about giving back. Our focus during Christmas is to help others.”

The Samaritan House Greenville, Inc.
A Holiday Open House tradition
The Augusta Road community has a big heart, and giving back is always a big part of the holiday season. ARBA kicked off the holidays on November 10 with a Meals on Wheels Delivery Day. Many Augusta Road businesses even closed up shop on that day so their employees could participate. Lin Watson said her staff at Harrison Lighting was proud they could give back to their community. “I’ve delivered Meals on Wheels on and off for years, and I know how important it is for the people that are shut-ins just to see a face, have a conversation and receive a hot meal,” Watson said. Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals to nearly 1,500 homebound people and senior citizens every Monday through Friday. They check in on their clients and help connect them with services that could make their lives better. Meals on Wheels even delivers pet food to more than 100 homes so that their owners don’t have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their furry companions.
Taffy Odom of Meals on Wheels, and the owners and employees of Harrison Lighting, Lin Watson, Suzanne Robinson, Phil Watson, Mark Strange, Robert Fonville and Cordell Mizell
The spirit of giving will thrive along Augusta Road throughout the holidays. From Holiday Open House through the month of December, ARBA will support Samaritan House, an emergency food pantry that serves people in need in the Augusta Road area. For many families, bringing canned goods or donations to
Holiday Open House is already part of their Christmas tradition. “Everyone who comes is always very generous. If they don’t bring a canned good, we have a jar at the front, and they always leave money,” said Marty Garrison, owner of Paisley & Paper. She said it feels good to be able to help people in the community who can’t afford to buy groceries. It’s important to ARBA to give back to the community, and supporting nonprofit organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Samaritan House helps change lives right here in the Augusta Road Business District. If you’d like to support the charity efforts of Holiday Open House, please look for the Samaritan House collection boxes at participating businesses. You can donate canned goods, dry goods, or money.

6th Annual Lights on Augusta Sponsored by TALK Magazine
No matter what the weather is like, the warm glow of holiday lights always makes it feel like Christmas. Augusta Road will transform into a winter wonderland again this year for the Lights on Augusta contest. It’s a friendly competition that encourages community participation and camaraderie between businesses and delights families and loyal customers.
The Rock House Antiques won first place in Lights on Augusta last year. Carol Kilby says they used mostly blues and whites and had a lot of bright and fun decorations, but she thinks it was the live trees that wowed the voters. Six 12 to 15-foot tall trees covered in lights lined the front of The Rock House Antiques, and Carol Kilby said they made quite an impact. Winning the 2015 contest was very special to ADA BELTS Kilby and really made them feel more a part of the BCBG community. “It was our first year in business, our firstBELLA DAHL
& Claws won third. The Augusta Road community picks the winners of the contest each year. Participating businesses will be decked out for the month of December. Families are encouraged to visit all the businesses and vote for their favorites online at www. onlyonaugusta.com. Voting will begin December 1 and end on December 31. The Rock House Antiques plans to participate in Lights on Augusta again this year. They’re keeping their plans under wraps, but Carol Kilby says they intend to win again!
