The Conroy family: Michael and Meredith with their four kids. Growing up just off Augusta Road In the 1990s, Meredith Conroy always looked forward to going to the Holiday Open House with her mom and sister, seeing the displays, sampling the treats and bumping into friends – including one from the North Pole. Now, Conroy is bringing the fun to the next generation, attending the event each year with husband Michael and their four kids, ages 6 to 10. “They love it,” she said. “It’s got a standing spot on our calendar from year to year.” “We look forward to Family traditions are an important part of the it jump-starting our holidays, and local Augusta Road businesses are delighted to see their Holiday Open House holiday season each become a favorite event for area families year year. Her favorite aspect of the event is visiting your holiday season stores – especially Elephant’s Trunk and Gage’s – started off right!” to find great gift ideas for her children and family, Her kids leave the shopping to mom, and say they look forward to riding in a horse-drawn carriage, sampling Christmas treats – especially at the Bakery Off Augusta – and, of course, meeting Santa. “This event is fun for the whole family,” Conroy said. “There is something everyone can enjoy.” She finds that the event is much more social than typical shopping excursions, and the activities and local feel set it apart. “We love to run into friends while hopping from shopping center to shopping center,” she said. Though since the 1990s she has switched roles, from child to parent, she still feels that Christmas anticipation on Augusta Road – maybe even moreso now, thanks to the excitement of her children. Conroy plans to maintain the tradition as long as possible.

The Samaritan House Greenville, Inc.

A Holiday Open House tradition

As exciting as it can be to find what we want to receive under the tree, the Augusta Road Business Association knows it can be even more fulfilling to help others this time of year. Holiday Open House is the perfect time to pitch in to help those in our community – and show children that pitching in is part of the spirit of the season. This year, as always, participating businesses will set out donation collection boxes to raise funds for the Samaritan House, a local charity that oversees the collection and distribution of food and clothing to those in need. The Samaritan House of Greenville, which ARBA has supported for several years, is a faith-based cooperative

made up of six sponsoring churches along with individuals and community groups. The food

distribution center spends about $1,000 per week on food for needy clients and does not receive support from large corporations, so every donation makes a big difference. Caroline Dover, owner of Pigtails & Crewcuts in Augusta Commons, is new to the Open House after just opening her business last year, but said she appreciated the effort to bring a community service element to the event. “Last year we raised funds, and we’ll definitely do that again,” she said. “We also did a food drive last year, so right now, we’re planning out what we’re doing this year. I like that the focus is on the community.”

7th Annual Lights on Augusta Sponsored by TALK Magazine

The shops and businesses on Augusta Road take on a festive glow each year, which is equal parts seasonal spirit and the spirit of friendly competition. For the seventh year, ARBA has hosted the increasingly popular Lights on Augusta competition, this year sponsored by TALK Magazine. All ARBA members are invited to deck out their shops for the month of December, and the Augusta Road community turns out in full force to decide the winner. Voting is online at www.onlyonaugusta.com, and lasts from Dec. 1 through Dec. 31. Many members pull out all the stops with over-the-top decor and word-of-mouth campaigns, which not only creates an eye-popping spectacle for shoppers and visitors at the Holiday Open House, but also encourages participation and camaraderie between shops. Caroline Dover at Pigtails & Crewcuts was told last year - her first year in business - that Carol Kilby at the Rock House Antiques was the formidable opponent to beat, with an always-beautiful display. “We knew it was partly the decor, but also getting people to vote, so I worked social media to ask people to vote,” Dover said. Her Danishstyle snow village, with fairy lights, natural wood and shades of white, ended up taking top prize, with defending champion Rock House taking second. They even turned a hair bow turnstile into an elaborate tree. This year, in an effort to hold on to her title, Dover and her staff will be going for a bright, colorful, cartoon-style look, though the exact

details are still under wraps. No matter who takes top prize, she appreciates how the Lights on Augusta contest adds excitement to the event for business owners while spreading joy to shoppers and visitors throughout the season. “When all of the places are decorated, it’s just like an old-fashioned Christmas,” she said.
