Forget Black Friday. The true start of Christmas shopping – at least here in the heart of Greenville – is the Sunday before Thanksgiving. That’s November 21 this year, the date set aside for the annual Augusta Road Holiday Open House. A long-treasured local tradition, Holiday Open House runs from 1-5PM at stores and shopping centers throughout the Augusta Road business district. It’s an afternoon filled with family fun for all ages, attracting shoppers eager to get a jump on their Christmas lists as well as children even more eager to get this year’s first glimpse of Santa. “It’s like a big party,” says Jim Voss of Specialty Retail Consultants. “This Open House has taken place for years, and people have really come to look forward to it.” Presented by the Augusta Road Business Association, this annual event features in-store specials
and refreshments at more than 40 participating businesses – and often the best one-day deals of the season. But shopping’s only half the fun. Lewis Plaza, for example, is hosting free carriage rides along with face painting, a balloon artist and an Oompah band as well as Santa Claus and a couple of elves. Over at Augusta Commons, activities include gourmet samples for foodies at Foxfire, a booksigning with local author Melinda Long at Elephant’s Trunk, and pastel portraits at Grey Goose (reservations required for sittings); Santa plans to be there, too. A free city trolley will run all along Augusta Road during the festivities, taking riders from one shopping center to the next. Expect the route to repeat every 30 minutes or so, according to Mike Horne, Fleet Services Manager for the City of Greenville. “It’s pretty informal,” he explains. “We’ll pick

Helpful Holiday Shopping Tips is loitering around your vehicle, do not go to your car. Change your direction or return to the store until the person leaves.
It is holiday time again and in order to ensure a great time is had by all, here are some easy safety tips to put into place while you are doing one of the most popular past times of the season, shopping. Holiday shopping can be chaotic, tiring and frustrating. Jostling through crowded areas while carrying your jacket and/or purse, juggling countless bags and keeping up with your child makes you an attractive target to criminals. In addition, as parking areas fill, shoppers are often forced to park further from their destinations, sometimes in poorly lighted areas. Now that there is less daylight, you’re likely to find yourself entering stores while the sun is up and returning to their car as it’s getting dark, so make sure there are lights nearby before parking. Here are some simple safety tips to remember this season, these can easily keep you from having a holiday nightmare on your hands.
• Do a quick scan inside the passenger compartment of your car, including the backseat. • Be alert and suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle while you are still inside (as if handing out leaflets or asking for donations). Always leave the car window up. • Consider using your vehicle alarm system in case you are confronted. • Keep valuables out of sight. So that people won’t know where you’re storing your valuables, put them away before entering any parking areas.
PREPARATION & PERSONAL SAFETY
• Drive slowly and follow the designated routes in and out of parking lots and garages.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.
• Although it’s cold, never leave your vehicle running while you run inside your home or a store – even if for only a minute or two.
At the STORE & SHOPPING
• Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. Shop with a friend or family member. There IS safety in numbers.
Shopping during the holiday season can be stressful. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous, productive, and safe.
• Dress casually and comfortably. • Visit ATM’s only at well-lighted and populated locations (only visit ATM’s during daylight hours, if possible). • Carry only the charge cards you will need. Using debit or credit cards is much safer than carrying a lot of cash. • A woman should carry her purse next to her body, with the opening (or flap) facing toward her; when walking with another person, the purse should be held between the two. • Men should carry their wallets in front or inside pockets, rather than in back pockets or his jacket. • Be aware of your surroundings. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you.
IN YOUR CAR & PARKING Because of the busy time of year and increased traffic everywhere, parking will be even more of an issue. As a
• Make sure you’ve been given back your card once you’ve paid for what you bought.
convenience to visitors and shoppers to the Augusta Road Holiday Open House, the downtown trolley route will be extended down Augusta during this event. Trolley stops are designated on the map in the center of this publication. Here are a few safety tips for parking in general: • Take notice of lighting. Try to choose a spot in the brightest or best lit section. • Always lock your car and make sure the windows are closed, no matter how long you’ll be gone. • Once your car is parked, familiarize yourself with its location so you can find it without delay. • Have your keys in your hand before you leave the safety of your store. • Look around your vehicle for any suspicious activity. If someone

• Walk in the driveways of parking lots rather than between cars. If you are pulled down between cars and cry for help it will be difficult for anyone to tell where the cries are coming from. • Don’t allow your attention to become distracted from your purse or packages. • Don’t overload yourself with packages. Consolidate purchases into one or two large shopping bags so you can keep track of everything. Never leave your purchases unattended, even for a few minutes. • Lock packages in the trunk out of sight if you have to leave packages in your car unattended. Avoid leaving any packages or shopping bags visible in your car. • Leave your most expensive purchases until the end of the day when you can quickly hop in your car and go directly home.

Augusta
A Taxing Issue
Business district boasts unrivaled shopping experience Online shopping is a siren song of 24-hour access – surf at work! in the carpool line! in your pajamas in the middle of the night! – while brickand-mortar merchants dance to a different tune. Virtual stores make it possible to point, click, checkout, pay, all without having to see, much less talk to, another soul. But is that a feature … or a bug? Shopping was never meant to be a solitary experience, Augusta Road business owners say, and they’re counteracting the online allure with enhanced emphasis on expert customer service. “I believe in building one-onone relationships with customers,” says Wesley Turner of Roots, An Urban Gardner’s Oasis. He and his
brethren all along Augusta Road have made it their business to provide a personalized shopping experience that far exceeds anything possible on the ‘net. “This is one main aspect that’s lost with big-box and Web stores. … Shoppers want the benefit of having their questions and concerns answered by a real, live person. They want to see and touch the actual product.” Local merchants aren’t merely about moving a product – they also offer services and talents that simply can’t be provided via the Web. “You can order plants online but what you can’t get is a custom-designed potted arrangement that was created just for you, just as you requested,” Turner points out. “You can order clothes
online but you can’t get someone to help you pick out a complete outfit that fits your body type.” Phil Watson of Harrison Lighting concurs. “Shading a lamp is an art,” he says, and therefore his shop specializes in certified expertise and personalized advice regarding shape, fabric, placement and more to ensure lighting
Online shopping sites impact far more than their brick-and-mortar competitors – indeed, most any sale lost by a local business to the Web equals lost tax revenue as well. According to a study by the University of Tennessee, South Carolina lost $94 million in uncollected Internet sales taxes last year and can expect to lose another $110 million in 2010. Projections are that between 2007 and 2012, the total sales tax revenue lost will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $569 million – all this in a state that’s struggling mightily with massive budget cuts amidst a struggling economy. Such issues are moot when people shop local. This matters – and not just to the merchants – because local businesses recirculate far more money in the Upstate economy than national chains. Statistics show that for every $100 spent in

an independently-owned store, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures; by contrast, when $100 is spent in a national chain only $43 stays here. Spend that same hundred online and exactly NOTHING comes back.
A Rippling Effect Local businesses provide local jobs, according to Karen Abrams of Foxfire Gallery & Kitchen Shop, not only by hiring their own employees but also sustaining employment at other homegrown establishments where they purchase goods and services. “We do business with other Greenville businesses – local suppliers, local service providers, local professionals like accountants and attorneys,” she says, and this ripple effect supports the entire Upstate economy. What’s more, nobody supports Greenville’s charities like Greenville’s businesses. Not just monetary contributions to the big campaigns but also a constant stream of donations for everything from PTA fundraisers to silent auction galas. In fact, statistics show non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. “We live here,” Abrams explains. “So we are more committed to supporting this community.” Turner agrees, noting that over the past year Roots has given back a little over $10,000 in donations through products, gift certificates, services, and floral designs to schools and other non-profits.
